Few places anywhere have as much diversity in a 10 mile radius as Southern Monmouth County. You can do just about anything here, with the exception of Alpine skiing maybe. Here, the glorious Atlantic kisses wide, well maintained beaches, in a string of  charming towns. Each with their very own distinct personalities, from rockin, rollin  Asbury Park to the natural charms of Sea Girt and Manasquan. There’s salt and fresh  water fishing, charter boat cruises, a number of golf courses, hiking and biking trails,  farms and farmers markets. If that’s not enough, add horse farms, historical sites and  restaurants in every cuisine imaginable.   Shoppers will find bags and bags of treasures, from the Jersey Shore Outlet Mall,  The Brook 35 Plaza and the privately owned shops. The quaint shopping districts offer  everything under the sun. There are art galleries, concert halls with top name performers and exotic entertainment, like parasailing, skateboard parks and parachuting. Monmouth Park Racetrack is one of the grand old ladies of racing, on a par with Churchill Downs and the eye-popping mansions and remarkably preserved Victorian estates. They will inspire you and make you reflect on the innovation of the original builders and settlers to this unique area of Monmouth.   In the summer months, there are concerts, dances, fireworks and movies on the beach, almost every night in every town for FREE.   It’s been the home away from home for presidents, celebrities and even some nefarious guests. The locals are always happy to have you enjoy it all. Those lucky enough to live in Southern Monmouth County know they’ve got it good and they’re proud to share it. You’ll be in impressed by their friendly eagerness to have you be a part of their world. They are real

people with families and no airs at all. The reverence for the shore is touching throughout the whole area. Though always busy, it seems to constantly have enough room to make you feel right at home. So by now you’re here, just get your bathing suits on, grab the suntan lotion and get to the beach! You’re going to love it here!   We hope you enjoy our BEACHCOMBER MAGAZINE.com as much as we enjoyed producing it for you. We truly appreciate you being here and if you have any suggestions that might help us to better direct you, please bring it to our attention. Don’t forget to look at our new fold out map in the back of this issue where you’ll find lots of money saving coupons in BOARDWALK CONCIERGE.com.   One thing we’ve come to know over the years is that while New Jersey and The  Jersey Shore always seem to be the brunt of many jokes, we Jerseians take it with a grain  of beautiful white sand. In fact, the whitest, finest sand in America! Don’t be misled  by some T.V. shows trying to boost their ratings by telling you otherwise. That’s why  families have made the Jersey Shore their #1 vacation spot for over 200 years!   Our geographical landscapes and unique waterways are truly unique to the world, that’s why people like Bruce Springsteen, John Bon Jovi, Queen Latifa, Joe Pesci and many  more live here.   Take your time while here and visit the wonders that the Jersey Shore has to offer and please obey the speed limits, most importantly, NEVER DRINK and DRIVE. A $20.00 cab ride or a limo is real cheap in the long run! We’re happy that you chose SOUTHERN MONMOUTH COUNTY as YOUR TOURIST DESTINATION SPOT for 2010! Photos 2010 ©Beachcomber Magazine

If your like me, when it comes to a JERSEY SHORE vacation, my mind is savoring the   thought of an ice cold lobster with a side of Thousand Island dressing, a few Fresh Oysters   (maybe Rockefeller), a Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, Pizza... alright you get the message! There   is also nothing like a few fabulous restaurants to go with it.   So, let’s begin Brielle. When it comes to places that have just about anything from fresh   seafood to steaks, you’ll find SIMKO’S GRILLE and THE SAND BAR. Both are excellent   restaurants with their own unique atmospheres. Simko’s is a little more family orientated   with quiet tables and a Brass Rail bar if you want to watch your favorite sports. The Sand   Bar is two floors in a nautical setting with entertainment. There you can see magnificent   yachts at their docks or watch them cruising by. They also have many TV’s to watch sport   and great happy hours. On the Italian side, there’s DUE AMICI and RELLA’S ITALIAN TAVERN. Both are   highly recommended with full liquor licenses. Due Amici is a more formal setting with   white tablecloth service and a white piano in the main dining area. Gourmet Italian is the   fare and romance is in the air! Reservations are suggested. Rella’s is a little more casual with   their own delicious recipes that include Pizza at the bar or in the dining rooms. Large family   style portions are their specialty.   In Sea Girt and Manasquan you’ll find THE PARKER HOUSE, EDGAR’S OLDE IRISH PUB, and THE MIXX AMERICAN BISTRO. All very close in proximity to one another.   Both The Parker House and Edgar’s are lively places with entertainment and offer a full variety   of foods. The Parker House, in Sea Girt, is a nautical style mansion and the moment you walk up to the porch, you’ll feel the ambiance of Sea Girt. There’s a lot of energy here and it will be clear, this is a place to have fun. The menu includes Surf & Turf, Prime Rib & Porterhouse Steaks. Edgar’s in Manasquan is more of the Olde Irish Pub style place as the name implies.   Ice cold beers, friendly people and pub style food is found here along with salads, steaks and   burgers. That “Feel Good Food” with nightly entertainment and dancing is found here and   you can dine inside or out. Now, The Mixx is all together different with a dining experience  in that they have a very unique array of East Coast favorites infused with a European flair.   The atmosphere is quite nouveau with BLOWFISH SUSHI right inside, and a beautiful   2-sided brick fireplace as the center of attraction in the dining room. Spring Lake has a couple of places also worthy of stopping in. The famous WHO’S ON THIRD and AGOSTINO’S ITALIAN SPECIALITIES. Who’s on Third is one of those cute little Spring Lake eateries that are frequented by locals and tourists alike. Home to the “Super Rye” and handmade fresh sandwiches is simply why they’re so popular. As soon as you walk in Agostino’s Italian Specialties, the smells of freshly made Italian dishes, imported meats and cheeses will overwhelm you with delight. Fresh Italian bread from N.Y.C. is a daily event.   Family owned and operated just the way you’d expect!   Wall Township has one of our favorites in the famous SHOGUN LEGENDS. This architectural masterpiece is easily noticeable from Rt. 34. There you’ll enjoy a Japanese steak house & Hibachi with Asian Fusion. They have several bars and a wine room. The food is delicious and authentic!   Up the road from here you’ll shoot into Belmar and Lake Como. Lake Como has McCANN’S TAVERN. This is another great Irish restaurant with friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Lunch and Dinner is served daily with great salads, seafood combos, steaks, chicken and appetizers. They have a dining room with 10 TV’s strategically placed to watch your favorite sports. Jukebox music during the week with live bands on weekends compliments the atmosphere! Also here is SONNY’S BAR & GRILLE, a quaint little Sports Bar. Lots of TV’s in & outdoor seating with that “Comfort Kind of Food” you’d expect from any All American Sports Bar. Menu items here include the usual like Burgers, Sandwiches, Steaks and Italian food.   Across town and a little south is AVON where you find THE COLUMNS. This is an old hotel turned restaurant overlooking the boulevard and the Atlantic. Inspiring views and dining on the porch with nightly music and dancing makes them a “Must-Go”. This 127 year old mansion is best known for the ambiance and their nightclub. A raw bar there serves lobster, king crab, clams, shrimp, hot dogs and hamburgers after 3PM every day. They feature live entertainment and DJ’s for the Young at Heart and the Young! SCHNEIDER’S RESTAURANT is a great spot with the Old Country Touch. With German, Austrian & Hungarian food, every dish is authentically prepared with the utmost attention given providing flavors that take you around the world. Potato pancakes, Sauerbraten and Weiner schnitzel will have your mouth watering the moment it meets your eyes. They also have entrees for the “Not So Bold” so both you and your partner will have it and everyone will be happy.   Belmar is loaded with choices. To begin, BRANDL’S, who’s been dubbed on occasion, as   “The Culinary Mayor” of the town, is a restaurant full of your favorite Jersey shore entrees,   prepared impeccably. The recipes are nothing less than brilliant and Chris Brandl just so   happens to be a really nice guy! Reservations are accepted. His other place, JAKES CRAB SHACK, features handmade Crab Cakes that are so good; you might find yourself looking   over your shoulder like you did something illegal! MR. SHRIMP is “The Jersey Shore’s   Premier Seafood Destination Restaurant”. That sounds like a mouthful, but that’s what you   get when you go. Ample plates of fresh and delicious fish, clams, lobster, king crab and more. Dine in or take out. You’ve got to try their famous ”Clam Pot”. NICCHIO ITALIAN RESTAURANT has recently opened and is getting excellent reviews! This is an upscale   moderately priced restaurant with a beautiful L-shaped bar. Authentic and traditional plates   include such items as Fresh Calamari, Clams in Garlic, Pork Chop Milanese, Osso Buco,   and more plus, they have prime Steaks and burgers. This is the new place to dine! KAYAS KITCHEN is a very cultural restaurant where you can   find international foods from Indian to Mexican to American favorites. A very colorful place  to dine in or take out, they’ve   got Wraps, Burritos, Sandwiches, Soups, Juice, Smoothies and more.   BOSTON’S in Neptune & Toms River is one of our favorite Sports Bars. They’re easy to judge from the many awards they’ve received like “Best Sports Bar”, “Best Happy Hour” and “Best Kids Night”. They have all the Sports Bar and Restaurant food you’d expect and Pizza to go with it and of course, all your favorite toppings. A Knowledgeable and friendly staff awaits your arrival! Outside seating is available at both locations. Across from the PREMIUM OUTLET CENTER.   Last, but certainly not the least in Asbury Park is one of my personal favorites, THE BRICK WALL. Wow! Where do I start? Well, their small but packed menu has just about every favorite food I can think of from real tasty homemade Mac & Cheese & big fat juicy Cheese Burgers to Lettuce wedge salads, soups and an array of creative appetizers. You can sit inside and watch sports on one of the many TV’s or sit outside on Cookman Ave. and watch the passers. Ice cold Beers and creative drinks makes this a very user-friendly place!

At the southernmost edge of Monmouth County, just over the draw bridge from her bordering sister town of Point Pleasant Beach, you’ll find the picturesque town of Brielle. Sharing an ocean inlet, Brielle is part working town and a haven to some of the most beautiful homes which adorn the streets and waterways. There are a vast number of unique shops and quaint restaurants. It’s a family friendly town, with plenty to do, mostly within walking distance.   Founded in 1664 by Dutch and English settlers, Brielle became a shipping and building port at the hub which was called, appropriately, the Landing. That’s the same history behind the name of the famous Union Landing Restaurant, which   exists in that spot today.   Brielle was visited by legendary explorer John Brown, who arrived on his ship, “The Half Moon” on his way to discover the Hudson River. In 1888, author   Robert Louis Stephenson sailed up the river with his friend Will Low, a famous painter, to what is now Osborn Island. This is the place he called “TREASURE ISLAND”. Yes, that Treasure Island.   Working fishing boats, pleasure boats, charters and magnificent yachts come and go all day and night on her bustling waterfront. You can watch them and enjoy a fabulous meal at some of our favorite restaurants, like THE SAND BAR WATERFRONT RESTAURANT and SIMKO’S GRILLE, which feature Continued on pg. 24

The beautiful town of Sea Girt may only be one square mile, but don’t let size fool you. Sea Girt has a rich history that is still active, all in and around the lovely homes. It was here that Franklin Delanor Roosevelt held the kickoff for his presidential campaign and where Woodrow Wilson learned of his nomination for President. Once called the Summer Capital of New Jersey, Sea Girt was originally farmland owned by Dr. Charles Montrose Graham and Mr. John Sherman. In 1853, Commodore Robert F. Stockton acquired the large tract of land and built a lavish summer estate between Stockton Lake and Wreck Pond. Then, in 1875, a group of Philadelphia land developers purchased the land and Sea Girt quickly developed into a year round residential community.   In 1887, the New Jersey State Legislature, purchased 120 acres for the New Jersey National Guard to use as a permanent summer training camp, rifle range, seacoast   battery and mobilization camp for New Jersey Guardsmen. The area is still used by   the New Jersey National Guard, and every now and then, you can hear the thunder   of training exercises rolling across the water.   By the end of the 19th century, the United States government obtained a plot of land along the Sea Girt shoreline and built the famous Sea Girt lighthouse. This L-shaped brick house with a central tower marks the inlet leading to the Wreck Pond. It also hosted the first radio beacon mounted in a shore installation in the United States.   In 1955 the lighthouse was decommissioned and purchased. Now it is maintained by the Lighthouse Citizens Committee, who restored it and use it regularly for all kinds   of community activities.   Wreck Pond was a natural inlet, receiving its name by being used as a ship’s graveyard. Vessels tattered by sea use were either repaired or left behind. Much of the original Wreck Pond has been filled in and is used to help regulate flooding waters for the town. Sea Girt is home to many influential people and often some famous summer residents.   Whether your shopping around Sea Girt or hitting the beach this is just one of the  most quaint north eastern towns you ever visit. It was once said that Manasquan was a fine community for two things – to make   a living and to enjoy life. True to this day, Manasquan is a community of close knit families, thriving businesses, good schools, and history, set along the ocean, river,   lakes, and streams.   Manasquan was settled by the Native American Unamis (“Turtle People”) branch of the Lenni Lenape who brought their squaws and children there in the summer, to enjoy shellfish and the harvest of the Atlantic. In fact, the name Manasquan is derived from the combination of Native American words for “island”, man-a-tah, for “wife”, squaw, and “stream”, han. Manasquan literally translates to “stream” of the island of squaws”.   In September 1609, Sir Hendryck Hudson, journaled that Manasquan was “a good land to fall in love with and a pleasant land to see.” The Dutch claimed much of the area, creating the Monmouth Patent in 1665. This Patent, “purchased” the land from Native Americans and paved the way for growth. Of course, with the settlers, came the builders and soon the vacationers. Wooden bungalows began to line the oceanfront as people found the borough a wonderful   and healthy place to be. By the 1920s, a mix of Victorian homes, seashore cottages, Continued on pg. 31 Photos 2010 ©Beachcomber Magazine

and beach shacks dotted the shoreline. Since Captain Hendryk Hudson arrived in Manasquan NJ in 1609, much has changed, even the course of the Manasquan River.   The army Corps of Engineering actually redirected the Manasquan River to create the Manasquan Inlet as we know it today. The inlet now is a vibrant boater’s haven, separating Manasquan from Point Pleasant and Monmouth County from Ocean County. Its scenic shore line is the home of many restaurants and shopping outlets. It has become a sanctuary for many visiting shorebirds. It is also the home to the famous dog beach, so pooch owners should be sure to include a run on the beach during your stay. Cat lovers will feel right at home too, as Manasquan is the national headquarters of the Cat Fanciers Association.   The summer months crank up the energy in and around the many local bars   and lovely restaurants that give diners a breath of fresh air.

Glorious Spring Lake is home to two miles of pristine beaches and some of the most magnificent homes in Monmouth County. Though there’s no law in the books, you’d think it was illegal to not have a perfectly manicured lawn in this picturesque town and camera flashes at every corner. Spring Lake is home to a distinguished collection of 12 impeccably restored bed and breakfasts, each with its own unique décor, true to the era of the time they were built. Friendly innkeepers welcome you to drop by for a quick history lesson and tour of the common areas. Many have restaurants, where some offer afternoon teas. The history museum itself is housed in a building that dates back to 1897 which started as a school and served as a Masonic meeting place during the 1950’s. The undisturbed boardwalk is a favorite for people seeking the tranquil experience of the ocean. There is a lovely gazebo where romantics can often catch a bride and groom taking wedding pictures on the beach. The drive along the boardwalk is uninterrupted, as there are no traffic lights and no parking meters. So relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the beach.   There is a lake in Spring Lake, the spring-fed Divine park and Lake which is equally and impeccably kept. It is ringed with flowering trees and criss crossed with charming wooden footbridges, which double as good posts for lake fishing. Hiking and biking the lake is also quite popular. In the historic spirit of the town, Continues on pg. 38 Photos 2010 ©Beachcomber Magazine

be sure to look for the calendar at the wonderful Spring Lake Community Theater, which offers many famous Broadway shows and revivals on most weekends. The town also offers tours of some of the homes and inns on selected weekends, but for most, a good book, a sun hat and a love solitude and all scenery is all it takes. There is also a bustling downtown shopping district on Third Avenue. The busy merchants combine to offer a delightful mix of fashions, specialty shops and food that gives it a South Hampton-like feel. You can get a massage and spa treatment, pick up a bottle of wine and some homemade chocolates for later and new outfit, perfect for enjoying a superb meal at any of Spring Lake’s elegant restaurants. Spring Lake is family friendly and moves at its own slower, scenic pace, as it has for years. It’s a great choice for visitors who want to shut out the world for a while.

Little Lake Como packs a punch. It’s got a scenic water view but no oceanfront property,   so that must mean the centerpiece is….take a guess…the lake! You got it! Lake Como   is a large attractive lake that is surrounded by large beautiful homes with friendly porches.   The Lake is well preserved in its natural state attracting just about as many waterfowl as it   does human visitors. Ducks, swans and egrets raise their families there.   Although the land that makes up Lake Como was settled in 1693, it was only in 1924   that the borough came into existence. Lake Como was originally called South Belmar and   some still call it that, though the original seeds of this area were planted by Jeremiah   Newman, a farmer born in 1798. Mr. Newman also realized the value of the seaside location   and divided up his farmland into smaller lots for housing and eventually sold beachfront   property for $1.00 an acre. (Smelling salts, please). The Newman family house is the oldest   house in Lake Como and you can see it at 504 18th Avenue. Its 150 years old, still sturdy   and built from sea timbers found on the beach by a member   of Newman’s family. Photos 2010 ©Beachcomber Magazine

Lake Como runs from 16th Avenue in Belmar, to Wall Township and has some of the area’s big hotspots in including Paul’s Tavern and the famous Bar-Anticipation. There’s an indoor bar, tiki bars, bar-b-que areas and even a sand volleyball court in the back.   The Irish pride of Belmar spills easily over   the boundary into Lake Como, and there are several Irish pubs and taverns in town too!

Colorful Belmar sits just above Spring Lake, yet it’s a world away in spirit. Belmar is active, bright, lively and full of beach events and activities. Young and old are drawn to Belmar’s energy year after year and the large community’s of summer renters seem to be outdoors bar-b-queing, just about every night. Fishermen and water sports lovers flock to Belmar with its thriving shopping areas and ever expanding community of restaurants. There’s very little you can want for in beautiful Belmar. Whatever your watery pleasure is, Belmar delivers! There is the wide beach and the bustling Ocean Avenue merchants. For a little variety, cross Main Street and head for the Marina. Here, the Shark River collects, before it empties into the ocean, creating one of the most glorious views (and sunset watching spots) on the Jersey Shore. Hanging out at the Marina is free and there are manicured walks, picnic tables, grills, tennis courts and parking. You can spend hours under shade trees watching jet skis and water skiers wiz by. You can also watch the numerous fishing boats as they pull in and out of harbor. Deep sea and salt water fisherman can catch one of many charter cruises that leave all day and night, and if you time it right, you may be able to buy some fish, right off the boat.   Some of that catch makes its way to Belmar’s amazing restaurants. There are perennial favorites like Klein’s, which began in 1924 when Ollie Klein, Sr., peddled fish from his truck through Asbury Park, Ocean Grove and Neptune. By 1928, he purchased the River Road   property located under the Belmar bridge, where it thrives today Continues on pg. 50 Photos 2010 ©Beachcomber Magazine

Practice, practice its AAh-von…with a flat a, like “grass” or “lass.” Say Avon, like the cosmetic company and they’ll know for sure you’re on vacation. Tiny, charming Avon sits between Belmar and Bradley Beach. Its border to the north is beautiful Sylvan Lake the runs the whole East West length of town. The lake is a popular spot for ducks and swans.   This little town almost wasn’t the town it is today at all. Wealthy tobacco manufacturer   Edward Batchelor, purchased the land for $45,000.00 (can you imagine). To be the site of the new headquarters of his tobacco company. Fortunately for us all, Mr. Batchelor took the advice of his engineers and developed the land as a resort community instead.   The town was originally a part of Neptune and became incorporated as “Avon-by-the-Sea”  on March 23, 1900. Soon after, a boardwalk was laid and a fire department was organized. Amazingly the reason behind the name Avon-By-The-Sea remains a mystery, though some   think it was inspired by the Avon Inn. The small town has only two traffic lights, so if you’re going to call the office and say you’re stuck in traffic, don’t say you’re in Avon or you’ll get busted for sure. Avon’s boardwalk is   a quiet place with a lovely casino that serves breakfast and lunch to beachgoers. It’s a lovely   break between the bustling Belmar and busy Bradley Beach boardwalks. It’s a great place to   swim & relax in the summer sun. Photos 2010 ©Beachcomber Magazine

A-vast Ye Maties! Ye better stop in Bradley Beach, or risk walking’ the plank. Pirate   lovers, the story goes, that back in 1679, Captain William Kidd pulled into the area   known as Sylvan Lake, and while there, he buried his treasure on Brinley Avenue. Captain Kidd never reclaimed his fortune and this far neither has anyone else. You can’t go digging   up someone’s back yard, but digging in the sand is just fine. Even if you don’t find the gold   doubloons, you’ll find a golden tan.   Bradley Beach is an old town, with a constantly re-developing face. It feels familiar,   and repeat visitors make “must stops” to places like Vic’s (home of the thin crust pizza).   In fact, if food is your thing, you must stop in Bradley Beach. While there are many great restaurants at the shore, Bradley enjoys a reputation for packing a string of wildly diverse cuisines, each with exceptional reviews. There’s Japanese, Cajun, Island, Mexican, pubs   and taverns and some very notable Italian restaurants, including Del Ponte’s Italian Bakery, right out of Brooklyn.   Take a few hours off the beach and treat yourself to a movie at The Beach Cinema on  Main Street - a classic, single-screen theater with an enormous screen. They run movies   at discount prices everyday, and the old fashioned touches are a movie fans delight.   Bradley Beach is easy to get to via NJ Transit, and the train station right in the center   of town is a friendly park, that hosts frequent concerts and events.   Bradley Beach recently renovated its boardwalk, making it very family friendly. There   is an ornate fountain in the center and a huge display of the town name nestled in a   flowering bed of ever changing colors, both great places for picture taking. There’s also   an elaborate, old fashioned miniature golf course, a big kids playground and again you’ll   feel the Italian touch at the competition sized bocce courts. Named after the Roman God of the Sea, Neptune is a sprawling region that   takes visitors from the Garden State Parkway to the shore destinations. Many   main routes and different communities knit together, to receive the nickname, “Crossroads of the Jersey Shore”. Neptune is home to recently expanded Jersey Shore Medical Center, and the beautiful Jumping Brook Country club. Neptune   is the pathway to Asbury Park and Ocean Grove, and Belmar as well.   It has lots of shopping and new stores are being added constantly. There are small specialty shops for water enthusiasts, where you can buy jet skis, and fishing supplies, drug stores and farm markets. Neptune also has some terrific little   restaurants and it’s a convenient stop to fill up after your trip on the Parkway.   On the southern and western edge, Neptune hugs the Shark River and even has   a district called Shark River Hills.   While there are no sharks in the river, some scholars say it got its name from   the prehistoric sharks teeth that have been found there. In fact, the area was   very popular with the Lenni Lenape Indians. Continues on pg. 59 Photos 2010 ©Beachcomber Magazine

Their travel routes formed into traffic patterns and the roadways of today. People still discover bits of the past, so keep your eyes open. Just West of Manasquan and south of Neptune Township, is a large expanse of land tucked between the Manasquan and Shark River, called Wall Township. Its named after   Garret D. Wall, a lawyer and commander in the war of 1812. “General Wall” was the only man appointed governor who declined to serve. Before becoming a senator, he held the   position of United States Attorney for the State of New Jersey.   Wall Township in the 1800’s was a farming and fishing community with a strong presence of garden and horse farms that exists to this day. There are roadside stands, garden centers and stables down New Bedford Road. Including an ostrich farm with plenty of bobbing, long-necked ostriches everywhere.   Wall Township also played a huge part in the early history of radio. Around 1913, the famous Italian inventor Marchese (Marquis) Guglielmo Marconi brought his newly formed Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company to a 93-acre farm and set about a transatlantic radio operation. Marconi designed his compound, called the Evans area, to include a “farm”   of various size towers topped with antennae. There was also a brick hotel for Marconi’s   unmarried employees with its own gourmet restaurant and vegetable gardens. Following World War I, Marconi and David Sarnoff, his once “Boy Wonder” telegrapher, continued   the work on what would eventually lead to the organization of RCA, (Radio Corporation   of America). You can tour the red brick buildings at the Evans site, a special treat for science and history buffs. Wall’s resources of salt and grist mills were critical during the Revolutionary War   and were the target of the British soldiers. It was also a source of bog iron, which was a smelting fuel. James P. Allaire, a Renaissance man: inventor, utopian industrialist, planner 60

and designer of the first brass air chamber and the first steam frigate, purchased a section   of Wall in 1822, and called it “The Howell Works”. This complete company town had its own row houses, currency, church, mill, stables and one room school. Many workers who lived and worked at the Works came from several different countries.   Today, the “Historic Village in Allaire State Park” is restored to its early 1800’s period   and offers visitors the experience of living history. The Village is listed on both the State   and National Registers of Historic Places.   Wall Township still has an active fishing community and the shoppers in the area are pretty active too. Busy Route 35 runs right through Wall and leads past lots of stores,   including the Brook 35 Shopping plaza, that has all the top stores, like Gap, Victoria’s   Secret and Williams Sonoma. Moving North from the poppin’ Belmar beaches are the two small towns of Avon by   the Sea, (pronounced with a flat a, like in class, not like the cosmetic company) and Bradley Beach, which is kind of like downshifting gears for what is about to come….the stunning and most unusual town of Ocean Grove. This one square mile of remarkable sites, is like turning back the hands of time about 150 years or so. You won’t see anything like this anywhere. Charming Victorian homes are called Painted Ladies and while San Francisco   says they have some beauties, no one, anywhere beats these. In 1869, a group of spiritual leaders assembled as The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association to form what became   the largest community of authentic Victorian architecture in the nation. In 1976, the town was entered in the National Register of Historic Places and in 1977, the New Jersey State Register of Historic Places. Painted Ladies are known for their ornate gingerbread detailing and unique colors all authentic to the era. Purple homes sit next to green, sit next to yellow and on and on, each boasting manicured English gardens, and twinkling wind chimes. You’ll find afternoon teas, ice cream socials and old fashioned town bands concerts at the Boardwalk gazebo. Add a charming downtown shopping district and you’ll see why strolling is a major part of a visit to Ocean Grove. To complete the time warp, visitors can choose to stay at one of many, many, restored Victorian bed and Photos 2010 ©Beachcomber Magazine

breakfasts, who’s large verandas are full of readers and painters. Founded as a Methodist retreat, a religion that is still a strong part of the now more diverse community. There are only two entrances off Main Street, flanked by huge stone and iron gates. Until the mid 1980’s residents were required to move their cars out of town each Saturday night and the gates would be locked until sundown on Sunday. Summertime visitors can see another most unusual dwelling, the 114 wooden floored tent houses that are owned by the Camp Association and leased to members based on their participation in camp and religious activities. Leasers must wait as long as 10 years for a tent to stay in these austere shelters. Every piece of property in the township belongs to the association. Homeowners cannot purchase the lot on which their homes stand. The building and renovations are carefully scrutinized by the Board of Architectural Review to preserve the unique Victorian architecture.   One last and most notable site is the Great Auditorium, which is almost the size of a football field and hosting prayer and revival meetings with Saturday evening summer concert series. It is also home to the thundering Hope-Jones pipe organ, which was installed in 1908, and remains one of the largest in the world. The original cost was $26,000, and was partially paid for by Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) who was a member of the Hope-Jones Board of Directors. Photos 2010 ©Beachcomber Magazine

Just to the north of charming Ocean Grove is Asbury Park, (a real day night contrast). Few towns in New Jersey are as well known as Asbury Park. People from all over the world flock to its sunny shores, famous for the music it’s inspired, the films and TVs shows shot   on its historic boardwalk. Not to mention its long-standing history as a resort town. Visitors will notice the extra wide streets in town. In case you’re wondering, its because the town was originally built as a health resort and spiritual retreat where the streets were designed extra wide to allow healing ocean breezes to flow into every corner of town.   Developed in 1871 by New York, brush manufacturer James A. Bradley, the city was   named for Francis Asbury. He was the first American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. Bradley developed of much of the city’s infrastructure, and even though he preferred gas light, he allowed the Atlantic Coast Electric Company (precursor to today’s Jersey Central Power & Light Co.) to offer electric service.   Seafaring history buffs will know that Asbury Park was the site of the tragic sinking   of the Morro Castle ocean liner which changed the maritime laws regarding lifeboats and safety measures on sea-going vessels. The town has just erected a touching monument at   the entrance of the Paramount Theater. The Paramount Theater and its sister Convention Hall are being restored to their former glory and every weekend there are concerts,   sporting events, shows and conventions. I remember seeing Leon Russell in concert there Continues on pg. 70 Photos 2010 ©Beachcomber Magazine

back in the 70’s and over the years, many greats in all genres of music have played this   lovely theater complex.   Right across the street is an imposing V shaped building with a crown-like roof. This is the historic Berkeley Carteret Hotel. It hosted many glittering balls and events as well as many famous guests. These guests include rock-a-billy music icon Johnny Cash, who wrote his memoirs while staying there.   If you’ve done it, you know that “Cruisin the Circuit” meant you would spend all day polishing up your hot rod, doing your hair, and riding around the loop made up from   First Avenue, to Eighth Avenue, up Ocean Avenue and down Kingsley. It was the place   to see and be seen. Asbury still hosts classic car shows and cruising nights so get the   Deluxe Wash with the hot wax, crank up the tunes and show off. Continues on pg. 72

The once great Asbury boardwalk, which had fallen to disrepair, is now experiencing a re-birth. Current revitalization efforts are breathing a newer, hipper energy into town where more and more trendy merchants and bistro eateries seem to pop up with each visit. If you haven’t been there in a while, you won’t believe your eyes.   Asbury Park has never been short on nightlife. The world famous Stone Pony and many other clubs and lounges still pour music into the streets. It’s a town for all, whether you’re a history hound, a nightlife lover, or a fan of innovative cuisine. Trendy restaurants take full advantage of Asbury Park’s strong visual appeal and refreshing sea air, and you can enjoy all kinds of cuisines in all styles of dining. MONMOUTH COUNTY IS BRIMMING WITH ACTIVITIES IN JULY FIREWORKS, BEACH ACTIVITIES TOP THE LIST Kicking off the summer on Memorial Day weekend, June, July and August are the peak of   summer. Make the most of it because Monmouth County is brimming with things to do & see. Take fireworks displays, for instance. Monmouth County has some of the biggest, brightest and loudest around – whether it’s the local classics in Wall, Manasquan, Bradley Beach, Ocean Township and Freehold, or the extravaganzas for which Long Branch and Red Bank are famous. Monmouth County offers variety: a day at the beach, a stroll through one of the largest outdoor festivals in New Jersey, then see the fireworks. Best yet, the festivals and fireworks are all free. July is one of the best months of the year because there are so many events you won’t   have time to fit them all in. Check out the Monmouth County Department of Economic Development and Tourism’s Calendar of Events, which is brimming with activities. The calendar is updated daily at www.visitmonmouth.com. A print version, with a packet of information about events, sites and activities, can be had by calling 800-523-2587. There’s much more than just July 4th to celebrate. Free outdoor concerts are in Freehold, Long Branch, Ocean Grove, Keyport, Red Bank, Sandy Hook, Tinton Falls, Bradley Beach and Allaire State Park. The Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank and the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove again present concerts for young and old and everyone in between. Spring Lake hosts Shakespeare and garden and art tours. Red Bank, Freehold, Highlands   and Freehold have farmers’ markets. Maybe a cruise night in Long Branch, Asbury Park or Freehold, or a drag racing spectacular at Raceway Park in Englishtown would rev your motor. Then again, there is the sand castle exhibition on the Belmar Beach, the boardwalk Italian Festival in Bradley Beach, “Cinderella” in The Barn at Thompson Park in Lincroft, a   calligraphy workshop in Ocean Grove and one of the largest fairs of its kind in the state,   the Monmouth County Fair in East Freehold Showgrounds, Freehold Township. Bradley Beach is also hosting a lifeguard tournament. Find details for these events and more on the Calendar of Events. It’s a great tool to plan   outings but remember, it’s updated regularly, so check in often.
