THE JERSEY SHORE is, and has been for over 100 years a fabulous vacation spot for ALL types of nationalities. safe environment and modern schools. Our islands and inland communities are truly unique to the world! While some people seem to move away from time to time, most seem to come back sooner or later because the grass is actually greener right here! From exit 98 to exit 82 you’ll find the beautiful towns of PT. Pleasant to Seaside Heights, including Seaside Park, Ortley Beach, Lavallette, Ocean Beach, Chadwick Beach, Silver Beach, Normandy Beach, Mantoloking Shores and Bay Head. Our mainland communities include Toms River and Brick Townships. All have their own distinctive flair which makes the unique personality here. Just about anywhere you go, you’ll find great restaurants. We’ve done our best to bring you the widest variety from prime steaks, Italian food, oriental and the freshest seafood you’d expect to find on your vacation here. There’s surprisingly great shopping here from our cute little boutiques to the “Premium Outlet stores” in Neptune and Jackson. In addition, there are watersports everywhere from Jet-Skiing and Kayaking to Sailboat & Pirate Cruises. There’s even “The River Lady” to eat dinner on or just cruise the Toms River on an old fashioned Steamboat. There’s also the “Cigarette Yacht Cruises” where you can do the same on an antique 75’ 1930 Nevins. Toms River, by the way, got it’s name in the 1700s from an early settler who would canoe across the river to meet with his girlfriend, an Indian Sqaw, he had fallen in love with. It was the Indians who thought he was so bold by doing this, they named it “TOMS RIVER”! All right, that’s your history lesson for today. There’s a lot more history here if you wish to find out more, including the settlers fighting the British for independence! So take your time! RELAX. GO OUT. EAT and BE MERRY while here! This little town fills your day from morning to night with electric excitement, surrounding two huge piers (the Famous Casino Pier with Breakwater Beach to Funtown). Both are alive with thrilling rides and amusements. From the North end’s all natural wooden boardwalk to the south end, you’ll find the MAGIC in games of chance, fabulous arcades, merry-go-rounds, and boardwalk treats including cotton candy, waffle ice cream stands, Jersey style pizza and steak & sausage sandwiches (loaded with onions, fresh peppers and Italian sauce). Seaside Heights delivers a high energy nightlife too. You’ll find over 17 liquor licensed restaurants and bars, packed into 24 blocks. You can dine and dance into the wee hours or just enjoy the fireworks, clowns and Boardwalk entertainment all day and night long. Just to the south is SEASIDE PARK with a totally different atmosphere. TOWNSHIP. Residents and tourists all know the famous “SURF CLUB”, as a hub of good food an fun. You can hear the music playing any day or night and watch folks in every kind of attire from club best to bathing suits and bikinis! Ortley also has a select few eateries worth exploration. The next town to the North is LAVALLETTE. Beachgoers who like a little shopping with their sand will love the string of original clothing and jewelry stores. It’s also loaded with quaint little eateries, including bagel and sub shops and the well known “MUSIC MAN” where ice cream is served with a song by crooning cone-sters great fun for kids. The LAVALLETTE lifestyle is low key, surfer, bicycle and jogging friendly. Continuing on to the North, you’ll discover more pleasure at the beaches of OCEAN, CHADWICK, SILVER, NORMANDY and MANTOLOKING. All of these little, “family-friendly” towns are extremely surfer and great for picture taking and painting. Little breakfast and lunch spots adorn the highway with bright rental cottages everywhere. For a different feel, try spending some time at one of the few bay beaches in these areas and enjoy the more local and friendly atmospheres unique to their towns. Be on the look out too for marinas and some very massive Beach Mansions throughout. (Keep an eye out for celebrities too, who keep summer homes in this classic area.) The mistique of point pleasant beach

There are more than 50 seashore resort towns in New Jersey. For generations families have had their own special favorites for one reason or another. Point Pleasant Beach has earned the reputation as #1 family resort on the Jersey Shore, including a mystique that makes young couples and families want to keep coming back. The beach has everything needed for a full day of relaxation. Clean beaches and restaurants of every description, which offer fast foods to typical boardwalk fare to truly fine dining, can be found everywhere. The Soft Touch of Brielle

At the southernmost edge of Monmouth County, just over the draw bridge from her bordering sister town of Point Pleasant Beach, you’ll find the picturesque town of Brielle. Sharing an ocean inlet, Brielle is part working town and a haven to some of the most beautiful homes which adorn the streets and waterways. There are a vast number of unique shops and quaint restaurants. It’s a family friendly town, with plenty to do, mostly within walking distance. Founded in 1664 by Dutch and English settlers, Brielle became a shipping and building port at the hub which was called appropriately the Landing. That’s the history behind the name of the famous Union Landing Restaurant, which exists in that spot today. Brielle was visited by legendary explorer John Brown, who stopped there on his ship, “The Half Moon” on his way to discover the Hudson River. In 1888, author Robert Louis Stephenson sailed up the river with his friend Will Low, a famous painter, to what is now Osborn Island, the place he called “TREASURE ISLAND”. Yes, that Treasure Island. Working fishing boats, pleasure boats, charters and magnificent yachts come and go all day and night on her bustling waterfront. From generation to generation visitors have flocked to the Jersey Shore for more than just beautiful beaches and the cool Atlantic. They’ve also come here for the best in what were the basic resort foods way back, when they had to be not only fresh but easy to get! Keep in mind the bridges you crossed were not always concrete. Long ago before 1950, those bridges were wooden and only a limited amount of trains stopped here. Merchants became very resourceful. They would have certain hours when cattle could cross and different times for people. Then came cars. Thus, the birth of Boardwalk foods. The easy things were of course, Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, clams on the 1/2 shell and of course, there was clam chowder. Shortly as time went by more and more foods came. Ice cream, caramel pop-corn, cotton candy and salt water taffy. Then they started getting bolder with pizza, hot sausage, french fries and steak sandwiches. All has progressed of course, with time. Now it’s tacos, burritos, AMERICAN fries, shrimp, lobster, subs and whatever else you want. Lest we forget breakfast foods, bagels, pancakes, French (AMERICAN) toast and the wildest combination of eggs. Now there are even breakfast burritos, wraps and stuffed pancakes. Yes, we have everything now anyone could possibly want and just about in any size. We actually claim fame(alright maybe this isn’t true) for putting the word GAVONE in gavone! Either way, BEACHCOMBER has gone to great lengths to provide you some of the best places to help you satisfy this major part of your vacation. But, remember, listen to your mother when says, “Wait a 1/2 hour or so after eating before you go swimming!” By the way, go ahead EAT UP! It is a vacation.
