May is National Moving Month, kicking off the busiest season for relocation. It’s the time of the year when a lot of families begin thinking about who they will hire to help them move. It’s also a time when consumers need to exercise caution and choose their household goods carrier wisely. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 35 million Americans will move this year. At BBB our goal is to ensure that everyone who moves is treated fairly. After all, consumers should be able to expect honest and reasonable treatment when they move. But all too often, we hear from people who were tricked by bad moving companies that disappeared with their goods or held their goods hostage for more money. That’s why the U.S. DOT Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has created a website, www.protectyourmove. gov, to assist consumers in preparing to move. Always remember: Verify licensing. Interstate movers need to be licensed with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which you can verify at www.protectyourmove.gov. Intrastate movers (within Colorado only) need to be licensed with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, which you can verify at www.dora. state.co.us/puc. BBB Buzz BBB Holds Roofing Companies Accountable: In our growing effort to support the Denver/Boulder community, your BBB was the first to take action on Senate Bill 38 (SB-38), signed by Governor John Hickenlooper in June 2012, by requiring SB-38 compliance as one of our Standards for BBB Accreditation. This additional standard means that no roofing contractors can acquire or maintain their accreditation unless their contracts meet all guidelines set forth by the legislation. SB-38 requires roofing companies to abide by nine items, with each clearly laid out in their contracts; there is no grace period for compliance. The Colorado Roofing Association (CRA) recommends that businesses comply immediately with the spirit and intent of the law, and to get contracts printed or altered with newly required language as soon as possible. If you are an Accredited Business and want to make sure your contract meets the bill’s standards, call the BBB of Denver/Boulder at 303-758-1658. If you’re a consumer who wants to double-check whether you signed an updated contract, call 303-758-2100.

Preparing for Tax Season
According to the BBB, the home improvement industry is consistently in the top five types of businesses that receive the most consumer complaints each year. Complaints to the BBB about home improvement contractors include high-pressure sales tactics, confusion over contract terms, poor workmanship, incomplete job performance, and overcharging. The BBB urges consumers to be wary of less-than-reputable or unqualified contractors who promise a variety of services at cut-rate prices. They may show up at your door, advertise in local newspapers, or put fliers in your mailbox. The Better Business Bureau has the following advice for homeowners who hire home improvement contractors: Consumer Research. Check with the BBB to see if the contractor has unanswered or unresolved complaints on file. Identity Verification. Ask to see the contractor’s driver’s license to see if the name on his business cards is the same as the name on his license. Contractors who have a history of scams often use aliases. Cost Comparisons. Obtain bids based on the same building specifications, materials, labor, and time needed to complete the project. Licensing. Check to see if the specific industry requires contractors to be licensed, and make sure the contractor you hire has the proper licensing. Insurance and Bonding. Verify the contractor’s liability insurance to protect you against damage. Be sure all workers are bonded to protect you against theft and damage. References. Ask for references from previous customers and check them out. Written Contract. Do not permit work to start without a signed written contract that includes start and completion dates, exact costs, and specific work to be done. Read the fine print. Payment. Pay by check or credit card. If you are asked to pay for the entire job up front, this should raise a red flag. Final payment should not be due until the job is done. Your BBB has some tips for selecting a reputable tax preparer and avoiding those who may be problematic: Check on qualifications. Ask about their training, experience, knowledge of current tax law, and whether they are members of a professional organization with continuing-education requirements and a code of ethics. Learn about their service terms in advance. Find out whether they guarantee the accuracy of their work and will amend the return if there’s a mistake. Ask for references. Obtain referrals from satisfied clients. Beware of phishing emails. Beware of any emails that appear to be from the IRS. Do not give any personal information or click on any links, because the IRS does not use email to initiate contact with taxpayers. Write or telephone the IRS directly if you receive such an email, and ask if they are trying to get in touch with you. Forward them the email you received for them to investigate. BBB advises consumers to steer clear of tax preparers who sound too good to be true. Be suspicious if they: • Boast they can obtain larger refunds than their competitors. • Pressure you to sign up for immediate payment of your refund. This involves a loan that typically carries a high interest rate. • Base their fee on a percentage of the refund amount. They should charge according to the complexity of the tax return. • Don’t ask to review your records and receipts, or discuss whether you qualify for certain expenses and deductions. • Once your income tax return is prepared, make certain the preparer has signed it. Be sure to review the return before signing it and ask for clarification of any entry you may not understand. Obtain a copy of the return and a payment receipt for your records.

The Ad Review Specialist contacts the business to see if the claim can be substantiated. “If something is wrong,” Brown explains, “we open dialogue to create a space to help the business become aware of the code of advertising, making sure that they are in compliance with local, state, federal and provincial laws and regulations governing advertising.” The majority of cases are resolved with the company verifying its advertising claims or modifying them in accordance with the BBB Code. If the business does not respond or comply, it is given an F rating, and details are added to its business review for three years or until compliance. If the company is BBB Accredited and does not respond or comply, its accreditation will be revoked.

Since BBB’s founding in 1912, truth in advertising has been its core principle. The BBB Code of Advertising is a set of basic advertising standards issued for the guidance of advertisers, advertising agencies and advertising media. The Code applies to the offering of all goods and services placed in all forms of media, including print, broadcast, online and mobile formats. Common issues in advertising include the improper use of language or claims that are questionable, such as using the word “free” and then mentioning the price in the fine print. “It is our job to help businesses proactively avoid complaints or confused consumers,” says Katie Brown, BBB of Denver/Boulder’s Ad Review & Trade Practices Specialist. “We help both parties trust each other.”

new Colorado business pops up every 72 hours, making our state the most “start-up–dense” area of the country, according to a study last year by the Kauffman Foundation. But some of those start-ups are pretty lean— one or two people, no office space, and a stringent budget. So just where do all those entrepreneurs work? Or the freelancers and contractors who come to the Front Range to live the Colorado lifestyle without being tied to a 9-to-5 job? Working from home is one possibility. But while that cuts office costs and means you need never change out of your PJs, it comes with its own disadvantages: children underfoot, ovens that suddenly demand to be cleaned when you’re suffering project inertia, and a nonexistent boundary between work and home. For Shelle, an entrepreneur who started a marketing company in 2013, working at home in the mountains presented some unique challenges. “The Internet would go down so I couldn’t access my emails, and messages would pile up on my cell phone,” she says. “It once took two days to trap a rabbit that found its way into my home and wanted to nest.” Another alternative is to head to the coffee shops or book-

EO: When speaking with you, your confidence and passion for helping people, being a community advocate for the BBB Foundation and overall infectious personality make a very positive impression. What advice would you offer to other students who are thinking about going to college but may not have the financial security to do so? KVJ: What I have come to learn is to take it day by day, take chances and believe in yourself. For example, with the BBB scholarship, I took a chance and applied. You have to have the mindset that at least you tried. If you didn’t achieve what you wanted, pick yourself up and keep trying.
In 2013, the BBB Foundation awarded its largest scholarship—the $10,000 Student of Integrity award—to Keylen Villagrana Juarez, to help with college expenses and fulfill her dream of becoming a broadcast journalist. We caught up with Juarez to see how her freshman year at the University of Denver is going, and to find out about her journey to winning the scholarship. Erin O’Neill (EO): How did you hear about the scholarship and why did you choose to apply? Keylen Villagrana Juarez (KVJ): I first heard about the BBB Foundation Scholarship through the Future Center at my high school, West High School. Kip Kramer, who was on the interview committee, suggested that I should apply, so I did. EO: How did winning the scholarship change your life? KVJ: It was the first scholarship I applied to my senior year; I never would have imagined that I would have won it. As soon as I received the callback to interview, I had a boost of confidence knowing that I had the capability of getting ahead and the feeling that I could go to college. EO: With ethics being a large component in the criteria for winning the BBB Foundation Scholarship, how do you feel about the statistics (see chart opposite page). KVJ: In reading the statistics, it is a bit surprising to know that that many people are unethical in their day-to-day lives, and that’s a concern for everyone’s future. It is not just a certain group being unethical—it is in the business world, the academic world and all around us. EO: Ninety-five percent of youth agreed that being thought of as ethical and honorable is a high priority, and 95 percent of youth agreed that in business and the workplace, trust and honesty are essential. How does that make you feel? KVJ: Knowing that youth agreed that there should be ethics gives a secure feeling that youth today really do care about ethics. Even though we are young, we are the future. Thanks to that, I feel optimistic and hopeful for our future and the workplace.

his growing season, swap out pedestrian flowerpots for more fanciful fare. Flowers don’t care about their container, as long as they have water, drainage and proper light. “Anything from birdhouses to rain boots to discarded dresser drawers can play host to flowering bulbs,” says Amy Dube, flower bulb expert for www.digdropdone.com. And there’s no need to purchase something new. Shop your garage, attic and garden shed for potential items. Summer-flowering bulbs like dwarf lilies, calla lilies and dahlias fare well in container gardens and prefer full sun. Dahlias are typically thought of as taller flowers, but for container gardening, low-growing series dahlias like Gallery, Melody and Karma are best. Begonias, caladiums, elephant ears and pineapple lily are also good containerplant choices, but prefer partial shade. Tall or straight flowers will look best in the middle; ones that cascade are better near the perimeter. When combining different plants in one container, select those with similar bloom times for the greatest visual impact. Create a balanced look by using complementary colors like yellow and purple. Adding annuals with your favorite summerflowering bulbs will create a full container and provide instant color. Here are 10 containers to consider for spring. Happy potting! 32

Shallow file drawers are a fine option for begonias, which prefer to be planted right beneath the soil surface. Use a power drill to create several drainage holes in the drawer bottoms. No liner is necessary. 8

These spring-flowering iris, hyacinth and muscari bulbs were forced to bloom indoors in winter. When forcing bulbs indoors, use containers without a drainage hole. When planting any forced bulb, it’s best to cover the bulb with soil up to its “shoulders” but leave the “nose” exposed. Keep the soil moist but not wet. And don’t fill the bowls full with soil. Leave room for watering, so the pot won’t overflow.
Birdhouse
This birdhouse pulls double duty and is a unique way to repurpose an existing item in the garden. A “roof” of flowering bulbs provides cover for the feeding area below. Using moss as “mulch” is a colorful touch, and it also retains moisture. This house will need plenty of water as it’s in direct sunlight all day.

‘Lemon Pixie’ daylilies happily grow in a recycled plastic jug. Saw or cut off the jug’s top and drill a hole in the bottom before planting. ‘Lemon Pixie’ is a dwarf Asiatic hybrid that reaches 12 to 18 inches in height. 2

‘Candy Prince’ tulips bordered by anemone windflowers are a delightful spring surprise to pull out of a hat. Use a plastic plant liner with a drainage hole to keep in moisture and protect the hat, which will also need a drainage hole to prevent water from rotting the fibers. 3

A tripod of posts suspends this hanging basket in a meadow. This is a perfect container for a very sunny area. Dwarf pineapple lilies stand tall in the center, and trailing annuals spill over the side. Pineapple lily nectar is especially attractive to bees.

Two colors of calla lilies share this “toteable” container. Place a plastic planting liner in the bottom of the tote, but make sure it and the tote have drainage holes. When planting calla lilies, the “eyes” or growing points should face upward. Callas do better if they don’t get hot midday sun. 6
Pails
This cluster of sand pails (be sure to drill drainage holes) is filled with low- growing pink and white dwarf gladioluses. Unlike their full-sized cousins, dwarf gladioluses only reach 16 to 32 inches tall and don’t require staking. They like full sun and plenty of water. If deer or other pests roam your patio, fear not: Gladioluses are critter-resistant.
