Resolutions for smart consumers As we embark on a new year, it’s in our nature to resolve to be better. Eating healthier, spending more time with our families, taking time for ourselves, self-improvement or using that gym membership…the list goes on. Being a smarter consumer is one resolution that BBB encourages you to add to your list. Last year, BBB received more than 30,000 scam reports filed by consumers on bbb.org/scamtracker, a free interactive online tool launched last year by the BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust. Not all of those consumers lost money, as many recognized the scam before being victimized but reported it anyway to help warn others. While these numbers are impressive, and there’s no way to know how many consumers avoided these scams thanks to the diligence of the consumers who reported, this work is never done. The top three scams on the 2016 list – tax scams, debt-collection scams, and sweepstakes/prizes/gifts scams— sadly, these were the same as in 2015. New to the top ten are online-purchase scams (#4) and phishing scams (#10). Online-purchase scams were common in 2015 as well, but this scam type was not added as a BBB Scam Tracker category until 2016. Employment scams (#5) are also new to the top ten, but only because work-fromhome scams, previously a separate category, were included. Another change was the drop of tech-support scams from #4 last year to #7 this year.

I SURE DO!

Want to know 10 ways to avoid scams?

There are thousands of new scams every year, and 2017 will be no different. We know you can’t keep up with all of them, but if you resolve to remember these TEN THINGS, you can avoid most scams and help protect yourself and your family.

1

Never send money to someone you have never met face-to-face. Seriously, just don’t

5

Be extremely cautious when dealing with anyone you’ve only met online.

Scammers use dating websites, Craigslist, social media and many other sites to reach potential targets. They can quickly feel like a friend or even a romantic partner, but that is part of the con to get you to trust them.

TRUST THE BBB

BBB Scam Tracker Helps Fight Fraud and Scams scams are happening in their area, or track a particular type of scam, or even see how much money has been lost. Users can also report scams that they hear about, whether or not they have fallen victim. BBB processes nearly a million complaints a year against legitimate businesses, but perpetrators of scams are not interested in resolving matters—even if they could be located. The data collection process for BBB Scam Tracker was designed to generate information that can be useful to law enforcement. Scam reports are being sent to the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA) for analysis and collaboration with law enforcement to help stop the most flagrant scammers through prosecution and other legal means. BBBs also routinely share information on scams with federal, state and provincial agencies, and local law enforcement, and will make the data available to agencies in other countries to help shut down scammers based overseas.

nationally in 2015, in order to provide consumers across North America with a place to report scams and fraud, and to warn others of malicious or suspicious activities. All 112 BBBs operating in Canada and the United States are now collecting information from consumers and processing data, which is shared with law enforcement agencies for use in identifying and prosecuting scammers. “BBB helps consumers connect with businesses they trust, and warns them about dishonest practices,” said Mary E. Power, president and CEO of the Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB). “BBB has always been able to track specific information about businesses as part of the complaint process, and that procedure continues to evolve and grow, with nearly five million BBB Business Reviews. Scammers are different— they hone their techniques as they leave a trail of victims. As a crowdsourced tool with a human touch, BBB Scam Tracker exposes their fraudulent activity in real time.” The free interactive online tool—found at bbb.org/scamtracker—offers a heat map showing where scams are being reported. Users can search using a variety of filters to see what

BBB Scam Tracker began in 2014 as an innovative test among nine local BBBs. A grant from Target Corporation enabled CBBB to expand the service to all BBBs in Canada and the U.S. BBB Mexico is expected to join in the future. In addition, BBB Scam Tracker reports will also prompt BBB tips and alerts, or serve as the basis for investigations, news releases, warnings, and trends analysis. BBB Scam Tracker is of great interest to the media, and the intake form asks consumers if they are willing to speak to a reporter about their experience.

Tax Scams

DROP Dramatically The Better Business Bureau serving Denver/Boulder has seen a significant decrease in IRS tax scams, due to the raid of a call center in India as reported by the Council of Better Business Bureaus. To learn more about this raid please visit www.bbb.org/ taxscamdrop.

According to news reports, there were 770 employees working at the Mumbai call center when the midnight raid was conducted; 70 were charged with fraud and other crimes as a result of the raid.

BBB Alerts Led to Government Actions BBB Issued Alerts That Led to Government Actions Against Two Local Owners

This scam has been affecting local businesses that operate in the tax industry. BBB urges the community to check with BBB for accredited businesses at www.bbb.org. For additional tips on spotting and avoiding tax collection scams, visit bbb.org/taxscam/.

• Fraudulent Tax Filing. BBB recommends filing early to avoid someone filing under your Social Security number before you do. • IRS Phone Scams. BBB urges consumers to avoid giving out personally identifying information via phone or email, as valid IRS communications are delivered via U.S. Mail. • Email Phishing Scams. BBB recommend not clicking on links in these fraudulent emails, and forwarding any fake communications to phishing@irs.gov.

DENVER - On Oct. 11, 2016, the 18th Judicial District Grand Jury indicted Mario Vasquez and Aaron Spontaneo. The indictment consists of one count of racketeering under the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act, COCCA. The indictment also includes an additional 21 counts of theft. The counts of theft range anywhere from $2,000 up to $29,227. All counts of theft add up to $142,971. Warrants have been issued for Spontaneo and Vasquez. Spontaneo was arrested in Arizona after the warrant was issued. The location of Vasquez remains unknown.. The actions come following the BBB serving Denver/ Boulder’s initial alerts on a pattern of complaints in March 2015 led to this investigation. BBB serving Denver/Boulder had been receiving complaints concerning several businesses with the same owners and principals, Aaron Lee Jackson (aka. Aaron Spontaneo) and Mario Alberto Vasquez. WILD FOR

WILD ONES

BY PANAYOTI KELAIDIS

I

know a handful of “purists”—native-plant enthusiasts who insist the only plants you should grow in a garden are ones that nature might have planted there originally (i.e., native plants). Although I don’t subscribe to the fundamentalist extreme of native-ONLY gardening, I do believe native plants are terribly underutilized in our gardens. And I do believe we should use them on a larger scale for parking strips, most industrial garden plantings, roughs in golf courses and many parts of large parks, which would be much more attractive and far more durable if they were planted with something approximating the original wild plants that would have grown there naturally. Let’s not declare a war on exotic flowers (I don’t think it’s nice to tell people how to conduct themselves in their garden beds), but I suspect most of us have a part of our garden that would be better off if it “went native.” I live on a half-acre lot, and if it was planted with vegetable gardens and Englishstyle borders it would cost me hundreds of dollars a month to irrigate in summer. Wisely, we designed half our garden to be un-watered, or nearly so. (I give in during the worst droughts, and often give the natives a drink or two a year—usually just before the skies open up and drop buckets of rain.) A few visitors like my native garden even more than the watered parts 18

BBB Community Guide

of the yard. They are the sophisticates. I have to admit that most garden visitors tend to tiptoe past my natives, and heave a conspicuous sigh of relief when they hit the bluegrass and English-style portions. But they relent at certain times of the year when the natives reign supreme with gorgeous blooms and wonderful forms. Before you leap enthusiastically into growing natives, a few provisos are in order: Most traditional garden plants have been rigorously selected over decades, even centuries, for their look and performance. Clones are by definition uniform and predictable. Most native plants are grown from wild-collected seed and often produce a range of habits in the garden, which can concern a tidy gardener used to uniform cultivars. Nature, however, abhors uniformity, so if you choose to grow natives you may have to tolerate a somewhat more “natural” (read: scruffy) look. Or else seek out and grow only cultivars among the natives (and there are many) that will give you a more showy and predictable performance. The second secret that native-plant gardeners never tell you is that native plants are not always easy to grow. Because a plant is native doesn’t mean it should be neglected. Colorado native plants come from all types of habitats—from desert to alpine tundra to everything in between, including bogs, woodlands, ponds and rocks. A native plant that thrives on the mesas near Boulder may grow very differently in the garden. Fortunately, many natives are splendidly adapted to local gardens. Here are my picks for blooms from spring to summer.

The Rockies are full of wild native plants and many are suitable for local gardens.

Arctostaphylos uvaursi (kinnikinnick)

Townsendia hookeri (Easter daisy) I’ve of-

Pulsatilla patens (pasqueflower) This native plant is quite common in Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks. Unfortunately, although it’s sometimes found in garden centers, our native is infinitely harder to adapt to garden conditions than its garish European cousin, Pulsatilla vulgaris. So if you want success, swallow your native pride and go with the European variety.

APRIL

ten found this modest daisy around Boulder County, sometimes in great abundance. The white flowers open on warm days and create a truly Victorian nosegay. This is a plant for a xeriscape, or even better, for an alpine trough or rock garden. The narrow, silvery tuft of leaves is pleasant and evergreen, even when not graced with the glistening white flowers. This is sometimes sold locally as a rock-garden plant.

BLOOMERS

By April, many more wildflowers are starting to kick in.

Phlox multiflora (creeping phlox) For a few weeks

every spring, the Colorado foothills blaze with pink mats of this lovely native ground cover. It’s unfortunately rarely sold in this form, although similar western phlox are available from time to time. One specialist nursery often sells Phlox condensata— creeping phlox’s high-alpine cousin that’s usually pure white. Phlox kelseyi ‘Lemhi Purple’ is a richly purple-flowered cousin from Idaho (not Colorado, but western at least!).

I’ve seen fabulous mats of kinnikinnick in a few local gardens. Hines Growers, a large national nursery, has begun propagating a clone native to our foothills and plans to bring it to market soon. Most of what’s currently sold in garden centers is the ‘Massachusetts’ clone, which grows but needs more water than the local form.

Aquilegia caerulea (Colorado blue columbine) Colorado’s state flower usually blooms

much later in the mountains, but in my garden it almost always opens its first flowers in late April. I’ve grown wonderful clumps of this plant over the years. It’s not long-lived, however, and the color isn’t reliably blue if you grow other types of columbines. But it’s always worth getting again from reliable sources where the true-blue form is maintained. This plant grows best in partial shade in good, rich, porous soil.

Ceanothus ovatus (buck brush) The ovalleaf buck brush is a very rare but exquisite shrub that only grows in a few counties in Colorado. If you’re lucky, you can see specimens here and there on mesas around Colorado. Although this species has never been sold as far as I know, you can occasionally find Ceanothus americanus or Ceanothus fendleri at local garden centers. They are very similar in habit to our lovely native buck brush. BBBGuide.com

One or two natives occasionally bloom before March, but our natives are pretty savvy, compared to Eurasian bulbs, which often emerge in winter, only to get clobbered by weather. Native plants that do bloom early are tough as nails.

MAY

BLOOMERS

By May there is often an embarrassment of riches in our native gardens. Here are a few that are unassailable.

Penstemon virens (lavender mist penstemon) The foothills are often painted

lavender for miles in late spring, when this precious penstemon comes into bloom. The flowers last for weeks, but even the low evergreen mat of lovely oval foliage is worthwhile. It’s quite often sold at local garden centers.

Clematis hirsutissima (hairy clematis) This plant

Sedum lanceolatum (spearleaf stonecrop) One or two other stonecrops occur in

the Rockies, but they account for only the tiniest fraction of the genus. This stonecrop grows from the Great Plains and piedmont mesas up to tree line and beyond. I find it doesn’t persist very long in xeriscapes or rock gardens, but it seems to have settled down permanently after I planted it in a large hypertufa trough.

has charming common names, including sugarbowls and granny’s bonnet, that show how much people are charmed by the waxy, nodding flowers that transform into a showy mop-like seed head in summer. It can be a bit slow to establish, and once you have a handsome clump don’t even THINK about moving it! Laporte Avenue Nursery in Fort Collins is the first grower to produce this plant in quantity, and it’s now found at some better garden centers or at large plant sales like the one at Denver Botanic Gardens. You can also mail-order it directly from Laporte (www.laporteavenuenursery.com). This local nursery has popularized many previously rare native plants like this and deserves support! ★

western wildflowers have wider range or greater diversity than this commonest of wild buckwheats, or sulphur flowers. You can find it in the sparse shade of pine forests, on steep road cuts or in meadows alongside cacti and yuccas. In the garden it forms a dense mat of lustrous green leaves that turn a deep maroon in winter. The cheerful yellow flowers start blooming in May and last through much of June, aging to russet and orange tints over time. This plant doesn’t need irrigation once established, and it should be in every Colorado garden.

BBB Offers Tips for Finding Reliable Assistance With Weight Loss, Fitness Goals Before you invest in diet or fitness plans or products, BBB offers these six tips: Avoid products that claim to help you lose weight without diet or exercise. Doctors, dieticians and other experts agree that losing weight takes work. Pass up any product that promises miraculous results without any effort. Determine your fitness goals. It’s hard work to lose weight. Find a program you can stick with, and preferably one that you enjoy. Does a weight loss plan require you to buy special foods? Does your local health club or exercise facility offer hours that fit your schedule? Can you cancel if you move or find that the program doesn’t meet your needs?

22

BBB Community Guide

Read the entire contract. What’s included in the monthly fee and what will cost you extra? What is the total cost, including enrollment fees and finance charges? Ask the health club about “joining” or enrollment fees, and if or when they increase. Understand your rights to cancel your contract before you sign it. Check with BBB before you buy. Anyone can check a company’s BBB Business Profile atwww.bbb.org or by calling 303-758-2100. Profiles include customer reviews, complaint history and whether the complaints were resolved. Report scams to BBB. Visit bbb.org/scamtracker to tell us if you spot a business or offer that sounds like an illegal scheme or fraud. ★

f this is the year in which you plan to take control of your weight and fitness, Better Business Bureau (BBB) has advice that can help you evaluate fitness products or health clubs, avoid scams and find reliable businesses. BBB receives thousands of complaints each year about weight-loss services, gyms and health products. Common complaints include products that never arrived, results that were not as advertised, products that caused an adverse reaction, or problems canceling a gym membership. The Federal Trade Commission took action in 2016 against nine firms selling bogus weight-loss products ranging from green coffee to dietary supplements. Consumers lost millions of dollars to these scams. Kim States, BBB Serving Denver/Boulder’s president and CEO, says, “We applaud consumers who take the initiative to live healthier lifestyles, get in shape or lose weight, and many reputable and trustworthy businesses can assist in that effort. We aim to help consumers find those trustworthy businesses and products, and avoid fraudulent claims or scams.” Before starting a weight-loss program, BBB advises consumers to consult a doctor for an assessment of over-all health risks. The doctor may recommend options for losing weight or exercise programs that fit your health status and your ability to stick with a program, which is a good first step, even before seeking a product or gym. If your doctor prescribes a medication to assist in weight loss, ask about complications or side effects. Tell the doctor about other medications or over-the-counter drugs and dietary supplements you may be taking, and report any changes you experience after taking the medication to the doctor.

Visit the facility before joining. Check on cleanliness, adequacy of space, machines and instructors. Ask if you can try the facility out before you join. If the facility closes, can you transfer your membership to another facility?

Renting? Make Sure the Place Really Exists Prior to Signing If you are hunting for an apartment on Craigslist, watch out for rental cons. A new report from New York University explores just how common these scams are. SPOILER ALERT: THEY ARE EVERYWHERE.

AMAZING APT:

?

How the Scam Works: You are looking at Craigslist apartment listings for a new place to live. You know that scams are common on the site, but just how prevalent are they? Very, according to the NYU researchers. Craigslist fails to identify more than half of rental scam listings, and suspicious posts linger for as long as 20 hours before being taken down. Researchers reviewed more than 2 million for-rent posts and found 29,000 fake listings in 20 major cities. Of those, there were three key types of scams. In the first, a fake post instructs a would-be tenant to purchase a credit report. The scammer gets a commission from the credit reporting site, even though there is no property for rent.

24

BBB Community Guide

In another scheme, con artists duplicate rental listings from other sites and post on Craigslist at a lower price. Prospective renters pay a deposit via wire transfer. Another pervasive scam is “realtor service” companies. Targets are asked to pay fees to access listings of pre-foreclosure rentals or rent-to-own properties. In the majority of cases, the companies leading the scams have no connection to the properties listed.

How to Spot a Rental Scam • Don’t wire money or use a prepaid debit card: You should never pay a security deposit or first month’s rent by prepaid debit card or wire transfer. These payments are the same as sending cash – once you send it, you have no way to get it back. • Watch out for deals that sound too good: Scammers lure in targets by promising low rents, great amenities and oth-

er perks. If the price seems much better than offered elsewhere, it may be a scam. • See the property in person: Don’t send money to someone you’ve never met for an apartment you haven’t seen. If you can’t visit an apartment or house yourself, ask someone you trust to go and confirm that it is what was advertised. • Don’t fall for the overseas-landlord story: Scammers often claim to be out of the country and instruct targets to send money overseas. • Search for the same ad in other cities: Search for the listing online. If you find the same ad listed in other cities, that’s a huge red flag. ★

he National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and Better Business Bureau (BBB) say now is the perfect time for a “digital spring cleaning.” “Plan to conduct a digital de-clutter in addition to sprucing up your home this spring,” said Michael Kaiser, NCSA’s executive director. “Take care of that long, overdue digital maintenance and you will be more secure against losing valuable, personal information and being a victim of identity theft while making your online life more manageable. With some smart, simple practices, you will help protect yourself, your family and the extended digital community while enjoying the Internet with greater confidence.” The bulk of digital cleaning falls into four buckets: keeping a clean machine, staying secure, cleaning up your online reputation, and purging files. Follow NCSA’s tried and true STOP. THINK.CONNECT. tips as well as the other advice listed, and you will be well on your way to a safer, more secure online 26

Visit NCSA’s STOP.THINK.CONNECT. site at stopthinkconnect.org/ for a library of additional resources. “Personally Identifiable Information can be stolen and used for identity theft if not disposed of properly. BBB recommends you safely store what you must keep and carefully destroy the rest,” said Frances Henderson, National Director of Privacy Initiatives with the Council of Better Business Bureaus. “April is known for spring cleaning and tax season — both represent powerful triggers to sort out your documentation — whether it’s on paper or digital.” BBBs across the country are hosting dozens of “Secure Your ID Day” shredding events on or about April 18, 2015, and many are offering shredding of hard drives, disks and memory cards, as well. NCSA and BBB offer these tips for your digital spring cleaning: Keep Clean Machines

Make Sure You’re Secure Get two steps ahead: Turn on two-step authentication — also known as two-step verification or multi-factor authentication — on accounts where available. Many of the Internet’s most popular email services, social networks, and financial institutions offer this key security step free of charge, but you must opt in to turn it on. Visit stopthinkconnect.org/2stepsahead to learn more and view a list of the websites that offer two-factor authentication. Make better passwords: If your passwords are too short or easy to guess, it’s like leaving your car unlocked in a parking lot. Longer passwords and those that combine capital and lowercase letters with numbers and symbols provide better protection. Unique account, unique password: Having separate passwords — at least for key accounts like email, banking, and social networking — helps to thwart cybercriminals. Write it down and keep it safe: Everyone can forget a password. Keep a list that’s stored in a safe, secure place away from your computer. Secure your phone: Use a passcode or a finger swipe to unlock your phone.

Clean Up Your Online Reputation Own your online presence: Review the privacy and security settings on websites you use to be sure that they remain set to your comfort level for sharing. It’s OK to limit with whom you share information. 28

BBB Community Guide

Clean up your social media presence: Delete old photos and comments that are embarrassing or no longer represent who you are. Search for yourself online: Update information that is no longer current. Update your “online self”: Is your LinkedIn profile current? Are other social media sites up-to-date? Review your personal information and update it where needed.

Digital File Purge and Protection Clean up your email: Save only those emails you really need. Your inbox is likely stuffed with offers, logistical arrangements, and other outdated materials. Delete what you don’t need and be sure to empty your deleted mail folders. If you must keep old messages, move them to an archive. Manage subscriptions: Unsubscribe to newsletters, email alerts, and updates you no longer read. Update your online photo album: Delete or back up old or less flattering photos of yourself, your family, and friends. In addition to not showing your best side, they take up space. Empty your recycle bin. Update your online relationships: Review friends on social networks and contacts on phones and PCs and make sure everyone on those lists still belongs. File upkeep: Delete or archive older files such as numerous drafts of the same document. Back it up: Copy important data to a secure cloud site or to another drive where it can be safely stored. Password-protect back-up drives and keep them in a different location off the network for maximum security. Dispose of electronics securely: Wiping data isn’t enough. When you dispose of old electronics, look for facilities that shred hard drives, disks, and memory cards. ★

IPHONE BY TZIDO SUN; COUPLE BY ANTONIO GUILLEM; FINGERPRINT BY HQUALITY

Keeping all web-connected devices — including PCs, mobile phones, smartphones, and tablets — free from malware and infections makes the Internet safer for you and more secure for everyone. Keep all critical software current: Having all software current is one of the best security measures you can take. This includes security software, web browsers, document readers, operating systems, and any other software you use regularly. Clean up your mobile life: Delete unused apps and keep others current, including the operating system on your mobile device. An added benefit of deleting unused apps is more storage space and longer battery life.

BUT NOT USED UP Upcycled items are eco-friendly and useful, and some are even artful.

I

t takes more than a coat of paint and a few belongings to turn a house into a home. That elusive ingredient—character—often comes with years of memories and decorative finetuning, and it can’t be purchased at a home-goods store. “That was my initial motivation for getting into recycling and repurposing,” explains Jane Glotzer, a local artisan. Glotzer’s background in interior design led her to look for ways to make beautiful home-worthy pieces that didn’t cost much or require brand-new materials. After trying her hand at repainting old furniture, reupholstering and crafting

30

new pieces, like eyeglass cases made from fabric samples, she discovered a passion for mosaics. Mosaics can be designed from discarded china plates, tea cups, pebbles, bottle caps, marbles, buttons, seashells, beads, ceramic, household tiles, scrap glass and other repurposed materials. “Mosaic really lends itself to recycling and being greener, and the range for home and garden pieces is limitless,” Glotzer says. Her rule of thumb is to seek out free materials. She likes to find things in her own home, at flea markets, and even on the side of the road. While there’s nothing new about repurposing old and discarded items, Boulderites love upcycled items, says a local

interior designer. “This (upcycling) concept has been alive and well for years,” she says. “It’s been known as ‘antiquing,’ ‘repurposing,’ ‘shopping at home,’ ‘helping friends and family declutter,’ ‘treasure hunting,’ et cetera.” The possibilities are endless if you have a good eye and a knack for weekend projects, she says.

In Jane Glotzer’s hands, a decidedly plain-Jane concrete bench became an enchanting garden seat. Glotzer transformed it with mosaic tiles she creates from found materials. “There’s so much life left in (discarded) things,” and anyone can develop an eye to see their potential, she says.

proach to reducing consumption. It continues to resonate with people because of the strong connection makers have to their finished pieces. “Honestly, every piece I’ve ever made is my favorite,” Glotzer says. “I take everything I reform from something that literally was in the trash or headed to the trash. There’s so much life left in things. They’re used, but not used up.” Indeed, an old shovel with a broken handle became a work of art after she painstakingly applied rows of differently colored mosaics to the spade. When integrating upcycled items into a home, the interior designer recommends starting small. “A little bit goes a long way,” she says. “A piece per room might be a good place to start. Too much at once, and the whole attraction of the reclaimed piece might be lost in terms of not showcasing its appeal and luster. It’s best to allow a reclaimed piece to keep its aura of uniqueness.” Cloar believes repurposed pieces can integrate into any décor. Use your home’s existing colors and textures to guide you in creating an upcycled piece that works with the room. If you need ideas, the DIY community on Pinterest is a starting point, and the Internet is full of bloggers sharing creative projects. “Anyone can do it,” Glotzer says. “It’s all about developing an eye to see the potential in things. Look for what might be possible.” ★ 32

Few upcyclers approach their work with the same panache as steampunk artists. “Steampunk art combines the lush aesthetic, handmade craftsmanship and exposed mechanics of the Victorian machine age with modern technology,” explains local steampunk artist Mike Whiteman-Jones. “It often features anachronistic or retro-futuristic fashion, architecture and machinery as people living in the 19th century might have envisioned them. Think Jules Verne and H.G. Wells meet Steve Jobs and Elon Musk.” The fusion of science, electronics, fantasy and art has given rise to a subculture that’s manifesting itself in videogames, television, literature, and movies such as BioShock, Thief, Hugo, The Prestige, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and The Wild Wild West. And it’s led to some unique upcycled creations. Whiteman-Jones keeps hundreds of eclectic parts lying around to make creations like the “Baskerville” (pictured below), a desk lamp he crafted from a battered antique radio case, a brass lamp and candlestick holders. “The radio case dates to 1937 and it was badly water damaged. The base had split, the plywood sides had separated, the veneer and finish were cracked and peeling,” Whiteman-Jones explains. The Baskerville’s main light was fashioned out of a discarded banker’s lamp and inverted candlestick holders he found at thrift stores. Its glowing front panel was cut from stained glass and backed by flicker bulbs from old Halloween decorations. He then added copper tubing, brass switches, a voltmeter, a brass magnifying glass, and a modern USB charger to pump up the contemporary-electronics steampunk aesthetic. His best advice to aspiring steampunkers: “Look at every part or element from another perspective, whether it’s a cheese grater or a piece of pipe. Almost all objects can and should be used in ways they weren’t intended to be used in order to create something unique.” —E.W.

Pallet Possibilities

Discarded wooden shipping pallets are versatile and easy to upcycle. Try this beginner-friendly project to transform an outdoor wall into a vertical pallet garden.

MATERIALS

1 wooden pallet in good condition Sandpaper Optional: water-resistant paint or stain

1 small roll of landscape fabric Plastic sheeting (roughly 48-by-48 inches) Staple gun 2 large bags of potting soil

DIRECTIONS ➊ Clean the pallet and sandpaper any rough areas. If

staining or painting the wood, do this now and let the wood dry thoroughly.

➋ Place the pallet facedown, pull the landscape fabric

tight across its surface and cut to size. Be sure to cover the whole back of the pallet, as well as the sides. Use a staple gun to secure the fabric to the pallet’s edges and center. Repeat this step with a layer of plastic sheeting to ensure soil and water stay inside the pallet.

➌ Turn over the pallet and fill it with potting soil, then

add plants of your choosing between the slats. Perennials and succulents are popular choices. Pack soil tightly around the root balls to secure plants into position and water thoroughly.

➍ Give the plants a week to take root before placing

the pallet garden upright. Remove the fabric and plastic from the top of the pallet, so you can water there and it will trickle down to all the plants.

➎ Use brackets to securely attach the pallet garden to a

wall or fence. Another option is to lean the pallet against a sturdy fence or wall where it isn’t exposed to wind. —E.W.
