Alix Chadwell Students’ Union Activities Officer 12/13 “When I started Uni, I never thought that 4 years down the line I would be standing in The Plug, a complete bundle of nerves waiting to see if you had voted me into this role. I can only hope now that I’ve done the job as well as you both expected and deserve.”

“My time at University has been amazing! I have had so many great opportunities and experiences, and I can think of no better way to have finished it all off than as Activities Officer. I have worked alongside some great people on committees, on events and in general, learning so much from them and this year has been no different. We definitely have some great up and coming ‘leaders’, why I can even see some potential Officers amongst you. I think Scott has a great year ahead of him, and it’s you guys that will make it such. Keep up the great work!”

As I have said throughout the year, what makes us great is not the person at the top, but the people on the ground. So lets think about just some of your successes this year! It’s been a year of firsts....  BAMSA held their first ‘Splash’ Spring Leisure and Sports Huddle event in the STV.  IDEIA held their first TEDx event with many inspirational speakers from the local area.  The Debating Society spent the Summer redeveloping their brand and produced a great little mobile app.  BUST brought in a proffesional dame and a stage combat team in preparation for their panto performance in front almost 200 school children.  BUGS won the bid to host the next annual SSAGO rally.  We all got together to dance the night away in the first ever ‘Cheesy Soc’.  BEST expanded their schools project to work with 3 different schools.

Highlights of the Year  Being a part of the graduation processions through the city. The mace is definitely worth looking at.  Getting the opportunity to be involved in the design of the new Centre for the Arts.  Campaigns! Attending the NUS #demo2012 in the pouring rain, and talking to students about the housing issues with the implementation of Article 4.  Gaining an understanding of finances and enabling students to be able to achieve more.  Presenting as part of the bid for the new Lloyds scholarship scheme.  Working with members of the Exec on projects such as the new development plans and finances.  Seeing how much people have grown over the past year.  Being elected!

 Peace Week gave us the opportuntiy to think about peace within ourselves and between each other.  Bodysoc attended 2 new competitions at Southampton and Royal Holloway, BREAK attended the Bboys champs, TableTop attended the Baycon convention.

“Hi everyone. I’m Scott and this year I have been Chair of the Societies Executive. I had the fantastic opportunity to work with people from all 5 areas of Societies. After being Chair of Gravity Vomit it was great to be able to pass on my experience and help other societies develop over the year. Seeing all the fantastic events and activities put on by students has been the highlight of my year. As the incoming Activities Officer I’m excited to take all I have learned and build upon the successes of Societies.”

It was a fantastic opportunity to work with the Officers in the Union and to have an impact on the way society finances are structured. I’ve learned a lot through the year, and was able to build upon the knowledge I learnt as treasurer of backstage. Finally it’s going to look great on my CV, it’s not every student that can say they’ve had the opportunity to manage budgets in an area with a turnover of over £100,000.”

Alex Burgess - Societies Treasurer “I joined the exec halfway through the year, however I feel like this has made no difference to my experience - the fact that everyone was so friendly and accommodating meant that I felt comfortable straight away. Being an exec treasurer requires an awareness of the financial positions of all 85 societies, as well as their interactions with other areas of the SU, which has really improved my awareness of the way our SU works. I will definitely apply for an exec position in my fourth year!!”

Lucy Woodcock - Societies Publicity Co-ordinator “I have really enjoyed my time as Publicity Co-ordinator this year; it’s been a great chance to develop my skills, learn more about publicity and gain a better understanding of how societies are run. Part of my role has been to create the monthly newsletter and it’s been fantastic to see all of the amazing things that the societies do throughout the year—there truly is something for everyone! This year’s committee has been really friendly and a pleasure to work with! It’s been a wonderful opportunity and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get a bit more involved!”

Outstanding Contribution to Societies

Ch&OS have come on leaps and bounds this year due to the huge amount of commitment shown by the committee. They hold in excess of 12 hours of rehearsals every week and their membership figures have increased by 45% since the last academic year to 237 with their orchestra increasing to nearly 60 members. They have held numerous concerts all around Bath and more details about these can be seen on their page.

Best Event Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - BUST (Bath University Student Theatre)

Ani Gough New to PoleSoc this year Ani has coached and supported many members of PoleSoc. She has worked hard to redesign the logo to appeal more to a wider audience, attended Socs GM’s, organised events, worked on a promo video, attended every performance, she’s the most active person on the facebook page.

This may sound quite standard until you add that she is not actually on the committee.

Last year we saw an outstanding year from BUST and this year was no different. Everyone worked together brilliantly to produce a wonderful sell out show at The Museum of Bath at Work. Audiences were impressed by the calibre of the flawless performances, and as the word got around, BUST were even having to turn people away at the door.

Outstanding Contribution to the Community BEST (Economics Society) The BEST Schools project this year saw students going into 3 different schools to deliver interactive and fun Economics lessons. They offered local schools the opportunity to attend their successful International Economics Week and the Economics Summit. The pupils really appreciate being able to talk to current students about university life rather than just their teachers. The students also gave them an overview of all the extra curricular opportunities on offer at Bath.

Most Improved Activity Group BREAK (Breakdancing) Over the past year not only has the membership of BREAK increased, but so has their active participation. They have offered many new activities including weekly beginners classes, a popping workshop, more open training sessions and a trip to the UK University Breakdancing Championships. The society has had an increased profile on campus this year, and have been much more prepared for performances. The whole vibe of BREAK this year has been much more approachable and friendly and this is reflected in their novice involvement in performances.

The Students’ Union underwent a full rebrand, and as such Societies gained a new logo and a new colour.

Alongside this we moved into a great new office on Level 2 right in the centre of all the action.

Both members and Alumni of our Societies took part in the spectacular event that was London2012, from both a technical and performance perspective.

Members of Bodysoc even made it onto TV in the closing ceremony.

On June 25th, Alix Chadwell began her term as Activities Officer 2012-13

2 new Societies were affiliated over the summer, IDEIA and the Romanian Society.

FolkSoc had their debut at the first Societies Showcase.

Followed by the first Cheesy Soc. What more could you want than to dance the night away to cheese music having been wowed by the talent of our Arts Societies?

This year saw our first Bath Peace Week, led by the Chair of the Islamic Society, Mujeeb Zia.

We can only hope for more of the same next year!

The week aimed to encourage people to both understand peace within themselves, and to share that peace with those around them.

4 new Societies were affiliated just before Christmas.

FolkSoc, the Korean Society, the Society of the Former USSR, and the Spanish Society.

They were out in force at the Refresh Fair hoping to encourage new members.

In addition in February, the Sport & Social Sciences Society and the Atheists, Humanists & Secularists Society were affiliated.

Some of our Societies took part in Fairtrade Fortnight.

A debate from the Debating Society took a deeper look into what Fairtrade actually means, and People and Planet explained the main principles of Fairtrade.

As has become the tradition our Arts Societies teamed up at the beginning of the year to bring you Show in a Week, or as it was known this year...

“Bath Uni’s Got the Pop Factor... and Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly on Ice in a Den with Talent!!!”

With one week to prepare, write, choreograph, learn, design and build, there were explosions, dramas and even a few men on unicycles in tutus doing ballet!

Societies were out in force during Freshers’ Week, with over 4500 people joining Societies.

Once again November saw our Societies out supporting another successful BathRAG fireworks display at the Rec.

We saw performances as part of the SU Fete, evening events and Societies Fair.

What goes around comes around!

As part of RAG week, former Activities Officer David Cameron decided to get his own back on one of the 3 candidates who gunked him the year before.

Activities Officer, Alix Chadwell raised the most money of all the Officers by a long stretch.

Our cultural Societies were involved in OneBath week, celebrating the diverse cultures at our University.

In March our current Exec Chair Scott Burfiend was elected as Activities Officer 2013-14.

Gravity Vomit amongst others were involved in the Community Fun Day held down in Oldfield Park in April.

In April we appointed a strong Exec Committee for 2013-14 Chaired by Marcus Johns.

There were strong contenders for this years Awards, summarising the sheer extent by which Societies this year have grown and improved.

A great sign of things to come!

Arts Society of the Year Ch&OS (Choral & Orchestral Society) Ch&OS have stood above the other arts societies this year due to their sheer comittment to understanding the aspects of the society that weren’t working and dilligently working to improve them.

Whether increasing participation of the orchestra from 15-60 members, improving inter-ensemble relationships through socials, or restructuring the committee to ensure the smoother running of the society and the awareness from members of who the committee are. Ch&OS have worked tirelessly to earn the accolade of Arts Society of the Year 2013!

Being the Arts Rep is a mixture of paperwork and play.

The paperwork:  I have contributed to the new Societies Development Plan which will become a key tool in helping new committees to hit the ground running every year and be ready for the new intake of Freshers. This document will also help the SU understand societies even more and help to plan for the future.  I have been involved in discussions about the future Arts Complex building on campus, facilitating between what societies would like and how to best work in the interim.  There have been some meetings… many meetings… but through those meetings I have got to know the usual suspects in the Arts Societies and the SU and have been able to put people in touch with each other to work collaboratively and to generally get things done.

 The Arts Rep gets to head up Show in a Week, who wouldn’t want to do that, deciding the theme started in summer and the minute the year started it was all systems go but we had a great night and a great start to the year.  Being invited to such a range of performances is a real treat, I really can’t name them all but I have seen some brilliant shows this year… a big highlight for me was BUST’s ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ but I may be a touch biased.  Seeing us out and about – from BodySoc flash-mobbing in the city and BUST performing in the Mission and Museum of Bath at Work to MusicSoc at Moles and FolkSoc at the Green Park Tavern and the Royal Oak, the Arts Socs get around and that has been great to see this year.  Competitions and prizes – I am so pleased that the Arts Societies are recognised in previous Awards Evenings and this year as well as seeing Arts Societies competing with other universities from BodySoc (Loughborough, Southampton and Royal Holloway) and Backstage (National Theatre Connections) to Break (UK Uni BBoys Championship) and BUST (Edinburgh Fringe Original Drama), we’ve had some celebrations but most importantly we’ve been taking chances and opportunities.  The new addition to the family was a great boost this year, FolkSoc became affiliated and their first Ceilidh was a huge success.

What we do Backstage Technical Services is a hardworking, enthusiastic and energetic group of students who provide technical support to other Students' Union Societies and event organisers.

We aim to give students a platform to learn the art of technical theatre and live events. We give people the chance to learn in a friendly environment, take part in events, and develop skills which are invaluable throughout life.

24 –Hour Musical - November 2012

BUSMS is a student-run musical theatre group with a huge amount of talent. With sell-out shows and multiple Activities Awards, our performances are always a great success. We put on three shows a year, an October show, a Main Show in March/April and a revue show in May called ‘Encore’.

BUSMS this year has been exciting and packed with fresh challenges for all. In November we rehearsed and put on a revue show in a mere 24 hours as a fundraising event for Macmillan Cancer Support, and for this year’s Main Show we put on two shows at the same time—The Full Monty and Bad Girls the Musical. These extra challenges meant that we had more roles for all of our members, be it performing or directing and producing. BUSMS doesn’t Summary of just stop at performing. There’s always Achievements something going on, such as Open Mic 2 extra shows Night, cheesy club nights or casual jamming. This year our members had the Record membership opportunity to go on two theatre trips to numbers London, one to see Billy Elliot and the London theatre trips second to see Singin’ in the Rain.

What we do...

We are Bath University Student Theatre and we aim to perform, produce, direct and promote great theatre from a huge variety of genres. The 'BUST experience' is not limited to acting alone - there are loads of other opportunities to get involved, whether that be through writing, directing or producing a play, checking out our socials or just coming to our weekly workshops!

This year in BUST Our shows for this year started off with David Farr’s hilarious satire ‘The Danny Crowe Show’. Our December show Treasure Island, The Pantomime’ was a huge amount of fun for everyone involved, and included a special performance for nearly 200 children from Weston All Saints Primary School.

Professional workshops this year have included a Pantomime specially run by professional dame Chris Harris and a stage workshop with Gordon Kemp, a fight director who also choreographed a comedy fight scene for ‘Treasure Island’.

After a semester of comedy, our March shows ‘Sherlock Holmes; A Drama in Four Acts’ and Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer-Prize winning play ‘Cat on A Hot Tin Roof’ were a stark contrast and received fantastic reviews. We have had a fabulous 73 members throughout the year, some unforgettable professional workshops and some highly entertaining socials. To conclude another hectic year, our final shows are our ‘Showcase’ evening, two productions at Bath Fringe and a tour to the Edinburgh Fringe festival.

BodySoc is Bath University’s Dance Society. We welcome members of all abilities and throughout the year, we offer many opportunities for people to get involved at any level and style of dance .

BodySoc have had a hugely successful year that began with Show In A Week in October and concluded with the brilliant annual show “Dancing Down Route 66” involving 84 dancers! Throughout the year, we also competed at three national University level competitions, bringing home 8 trophies and have enjoyed high turnouts at our conditioning classes and socials. We have also run a dance workshop for local children and fundraised for local charities.

What is BREAK? BREAK is a long-standing society, formed back in 2000 by Sebastian Robinson and Edward Haynes.

The society is for anyone who wants to learn breakdancing or has a passion for dance, whether experienced or a complete beginner, all are welcome!

This year in BREAK BREAK has been involved in numerous activities throughout the year. Weekly beginners classes were held to allow new members the opportunity to learn the foundations of the dance, while also having 4 open training sessions a week, allowing both new and more experienced members to practice their moves, share ideas, socialise and more importantly have fun.

The society has performed for numerous shows and events over this past academic year including; Open Days, Freshers Week, Show in a Week, World Food Program— Fame XIII, Refresh Week, One Bath and the Bodysoc Show. These performances have allowed all members, whether new or experienced, to learn some choreography and showcase their skills in front of a wider audience.

More notably, BREAK organized a trip to the UK University Bboy Championships in Newcastle for the first time in over 6 years. The event is one of the biggest breakdancing competitions in the UK, allowing universities from all over the UK to compete against each other and also socialise to make potential future links for collaborations. The trip was a highly successful event, with many members attending and enjoying the experience, most of whom competed in the competition.

What we do….

We are the University’s largest Arts society, and we run a wide range of ensembles which cater for a large variety of tastes for musicians of all standards. Currently, our ensembles are: Choir, Orchestra, Concert Band, Big Band, the Alley Barbers (a Barbershop Choir), GASP (Gospel, A Cappella, Soul and Pop Choir), and Aquapella (our Competitive A Cappella Group). This year also saw our Brass Ensemble’s debut performance.

This year in ChaOS… This year was a busy, successful and fun-filled year of music for us! The concert programme kicked off in October with the Freshers’ Concert held in the Arts Lecture Theatre. Big Band then opened this year’s ‘Show in a Week’. In November, we held our Remembrance Concert at St Michael’s Church where all eight ensembles performed and £222.85 was raised for the Royal British Legion. Also in that month, the Alley Barbers, Aquapella and Concert Band took part in an event organised by the Christian Union at the Forum in Bath. Choir, Brass Ensemble and Aquapella busked at the Bath Christmas Market. In December, ChaOS’ annual Christmas Concert took place in Oldfield Park. In March, Concert Band and Big Band joined forces with the University of Warwick Wind Orchestra at Hayesfield School. Big Band also played its first ever solo gig at the Chemical Engineering Ball and Aquapella took part in Voice Festival UK in Exeter, as well as performing at the School of Management Ball. Orchestra, Brass Ensemble, Alley Barbers, Choir and GASP also performed at the Spring Concert at St Mary’s, Bathwick. We held an informal recital for individual members to perform solo pieces at the American Museum and our Formal Recital took place in April.

In addition to all this music-making, we have also enjoyed socials such as the Christmas meal, a social with the University of Warwick Wind Orchestra, a couple of pub tours and a sing-along Sound of Music social (complete with fancy-dress).

WHAT WE DO: we formed in September and have been rapidly expanding ever since.

We’re the society for anyone who has an interest in Irish, Scottish, English or any other folk music and / or dancing (ceilidh). Our links with local musicians and now with the ICIA mean that we will be able to put on more events than ever and offer even better tuition and workshops in the coming year. TUITION: Several members attended a workshop led

by Marick Baxter to learn some of the tunes, music theory and techniques of Irish music.

CEILIDH: 19/04/13 A ceilidh is similar to a barn dance or square dancing except with fast paced Irish or Scottish music.

We also had several performances during the night, including Musicsoc’s Zach Wynne, an acoustic guitarist and singer, John Ruddock on guitar and a highland fling from Carys, a keen Scottish dancer

We organised a hugely successful Irish Ceilidh in the Claverton rooms, with a traditional Irish band (including Marick Baxter and John Ruddock - active members of the Bath Folk community) and we had a great caller to teach the dances.

Even those who thought they’d hate it went away with a smile on their face!

SPECIAL EVENTS: Our special discounted Gigs have included Kan and Effra. There’s always been an incredibly fun session after.

What we do: GV is a society that teaches members in the conspicuous arts, such as juggling, unicycling, fire manipulation, (and other entertaining, but sadly disregarded arts), and encourages members to teach each other in a welcoming friendly environment.

We have two weekly practise sessions for members to hone their craft, and every Wednesday night (weather providing), members with a streak of pyromania come together near a large body of water, and play with fire props.

GV also has many volunteering and performance opportunities, allowing our members to teach people in the community, and impress them with performances. Such as a couple of acts in the Show In A Week, and the ever popular bonfire night fire performances where members got to perform with fire in front of hundreds of members of the public.

This year: Amongst other things, this year we've helped local youth groups get their circus badge, entertained people at school fetes and helped a class learn about learning by teaching them how to juggle.

GV holds an annual event called UpChuck, (pictured below), with people coming from around the country to this student-run one-day-juggling-convention. This year had an over-subscribed workshop timetable, with volunteers from the juggling community willing to pass on what they know. Over 400 people turned up, and a few showed off their outrageous talent, while others gawped in amazement.

The evening show was fantastic, and even included an act from a member of the world famous Cirque-Du-Soleil.

What we do KnitSoc is a society of knitters, crocheters, cross stitchers and general craft enthusiasts who meet regularly during the week to work on their projects, learn new skills and meet with like-minded people in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

We help teach people who have no prior experience of knitting or crochet and help more experienced members advance their skills. We offer structured workshops that help members learn new techniques, these are run on a voluntary basis by members of the society.

This year in KnitSoc Our first semester was jam packed with activities! We taught many new members to knit in the first few weeks and started work on our charity project: knitting blankets for refugees.

Blankets were requested by national domestic violence charity Refuge, so every child who arrives in a Refuge safe house can have something to comfort them. KnitSoc wanted to help so we encouraged all our members to knit a square. Even complete beginners could knit a square after a small amount of practice. After two months of work and 48 squares later we completed two blankets to donate. Some of the children arriving at Refugee safe houses will have gone through terrible experiences and to know that someone has cared enough to knit them something will make a huge difference to them in their hour of need. Refuge is an amazing charity and KnitSoc has been proud to be able to support this campaign.

We also ran workshops every few weeks including teaching members how to make hats, Christmas decorations and small crocheted animals.

Women’s Day film screening to raise money for Oxfam.

In the second semester we had more new members joining, so taught knitting from scratch once again. In celebration of International Women’s Day we ran a cake sale and film screening to raise money for Oxfam with the help of a local roller derby team Bath Roller Derby Girls.

After successful committee elections this year KnitSoc will be running next year with a four person strong committee, hopefully allowing us to do even more!

For musicians: we provide a band room which has a drum kit, amplifiers, keyboard and a PA system, is walking distance from campus and is free for members to book and use. We create and seek out events for you to perform at. We collaborate with other societies and student media to promote your band and music. We can even record and produce your music! This year we aim to provide even more events and more networking opportunities to our members.

For music producers: we offer workshops and production sessions for music producers of all levels of experience. We collaborate on and produce both recorded and electronic styles of music. You can learn to record bands using our recording gear. This year we aim to provide more opportunities to collaboratively produce music and to record and mix bands.

What we do…

We are the University of Bath Photo Society, or PhotoSoc for short! We provide an outlet for students interested in photography, whether they are seasoned professionals or novices who have never picked up a camera before!

We organise several social trips for members every year, and also offer workshops, free equipment loan, and provide a way for fans of photography to discuss their hobby. Last year we even ran a trip to Rome, and next year’s committee are already busy planning the next large trip!

This year in PhotoSoc This year has seen a large number of keen members take part in trips to see the RAG Fireworks display, shoot the sunset from Bath Abbey tower, and meet up with Bristol Uni PhotoSoc for a day of photography! We have also had great interest from members with help shooting events, and many of our members have borrowed society equipment to practice with—including our brand new Canon EOS 60D camera!

What do we do?

The salsa society offers members the chance to experience many different styles of dance within the latin genre. The main ones you will encounter are salsa, bachata and rueda, however there are many more such as cha cha cha, merengue, reggaeton, samba and kizomba.

Sunday Lessons Every Sunday, the society runs lessons between 12-2pm in Level 1 Cafe. All abilities are welcome, and prices are detailed on the BathStudent website.

Performances Throughout the year, SalsaSoc are given the opportunity to choreograph dances and perform at various University events.

These include: Show In A Week, Asian Night and BodySoc Show.

“Hey, my name is Nicola and this year I have been the Departmental Societies Representative on the Societies Executive Committee. It is my role to be the first point of contact for the departmental societies and help them out when necessary, whether it be helping them solve committee problems or just finding out information for them. “ “I have really enjoyed this role; I’ve learnt so much about the Students’ Union and I have been able to see societies and their committees from a completely different perspective - having only been a member of societies in the past. “

Being a member of a Departmental Society can be a really fun and useful addition to university life. Due to the organising of events and schemes, such as CV writing workshops, guest speakers giving talks at the University and mentoring schemes, they are academically beneficial as well as great places to meet like-minded people studying the same subject as you! There are also some great socials to attend, such as Balls and trips to Bristol, that are perfect places to develop these friendships! Some of the main achievements of the area this year include:

 PSA’s Annual Ball organised by their Ball Reps, with just over 100 of their 160 members in attendance for the meal, even more for the entertainment and a few lecturers who showed the support of their department.

 CESA’s very successful trip to the Frank Norton Sports Day at Newcastle University, which was a great opportunity for students to network with different companies and enquire about placements.

Departmental Society of the Year BEST (Bath Economics SocieTy) BEST have expanded their schools project to encompass 3 schools. They continued the high standard of educational events including an Economics Summit, Placement Conference, International Economics Week and several ad hoc lectures.

On the Social side, the Taysom Ball had great feedback from speakers and sponsors alike, they have held 2 successful Bristol socials, one of which was inter-departmental and their football team won IDFC. All round another great year from our largest Departmental Society

 BEST’s annual Taysom Ball, which took place at the Roman Baths, with students, faculty members and sponsors enjoying a two-course meal, speeches and entertainment. They were also the winners of the interdepartmental football tournament which takes place over the course of the year.

The BCSS runs a variety of activities throughout the Academic year including a ‘Lunchtime Lecture’ skills sessions and workshops, as well as competitions and socials!

We are here to create opportunities where you can meet others with similar interests, improve employability and also, believe it or not, have fun.

We attempt to get guest speakers in from various companies to come and give us an idea of what they do, CV and Interview Skills, Placement Opportunities and anything related to Industry. This gives you a great insight to what you can expect from Industry and also help you when it comes to applying for a placement.

This year in BCSS BCSS hosted the first UK chapter of 'Code the Change' at Bath University. A coding event that brings non -profit organisations and computer scientists together for social change. This is a 24hr event hosted by students for students, with free food! This is a great opportunity to meet new people; help the community; learn new skills and possibly have an extra curricular activity to pop on your CV! Our first social of the year went very well, a video game tournament! Consisting of two teams of two players, playing either FIFA or Call of Duty, on two projectors in a lecture theatre. Pizza provided by the BCSS for all, fueling us for some wonderful gameplay. All players trying to advance to the finals, trying to win the grand prize of £10 Amazon vouchers for each player!

What BEAMES does…

We are the departmental society for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. We organise technical visits and factory tours each year along with many recreational socials and our big end of year go karting trip.

We’re here to give you more of a background into engineering and to have industrial experiences that you can talk about in interviews.

With a hugely successful sell out social in October to Bristol with the other engineering societies to kick off the year, we followed that up with another social here in Bath just before Christmas.

Our factory tour of the General Motors plant in Luton in April was a big success and we are hoping to return next year.

As our final event of the year we will be continuing our end of year go karting trip to go out with a bang.

What is BFS? Bath Finance Society is a career-focused society that aims to put a talented and motivated pool of students in touch with firms and provide invaluable exposure to the financial industry. As the graduate recruitment market becomes increasingly competitive, and particularly that of Banking, Accountancy and Consulting, this becomes more and more important.

What do we do?

Summary of 2012/13

In 2012, over 70% of graduates in Investment Banking & Finance had already done work experience with their chosen firm. For this reason, our focus is to make our members aware of the opportunities that are available to them. From Insight Days to Spring Insights to Summer Internships, we push students to get ahead of the graduate market by gaining experience early.

Bath Finance Society goes to great lengths to ensure that members are aware of the challenges that they’ll face - and how to overcome them. We have invited careers gurus to talk through the entire application process for financial positions, as well as offering our own advice with everything from CVs and Cover Letters through to Assessment Centre stages.

This year, Bath Finance Society has worked hard to reinforce the importance of Commercial Awareness. We have: utilised social media to highlight key stories and articles; ran trading games to improve members’ technical knowledge; and promoted other Universities’ Finance Conferences where esteemed speakers provide crucial insight into their industry. Those in the Committee as well as normal members have travelled to LSE, Imperial and York this year for this.

2012/13 has proven exceptionally successful for Bath Finance Society. Membership currently stands at 425 and we have organised a host of events despite challenges and changes to the committee during the mid-point of the year. This year’s committee are very proud of what has been achieved and I encourage you to get involved with BFS in future years - the results of the recent elections demonstrate that it is in very safe hands.

We do this by organising social events and working closely with people from different business areas to arrange talks and skills sessions.

This year As well as hosting 3 sell-out socials, including our first to Cardiff, we held a pi recital competition, promoted graduate and placement opportunities, held a countdown game on parade, helped out with departmental events and released a new merchandise item so our members can display their pride at being a Bath mathematician. Our membership was its highest ever this year!

BUMS Football We have a football team that this year competed in the university’s division 2. This year saw a record number of fresher's come to tryouts, finishing 2nd after losing only one game in the season, and the team securing promotion to division 1 via a play-off. The team were also runners up in the interdepartmental football club tournament, so all in all a very successful season!

This year in Chem:Soc… We’re very proud of what we as a society have achieved in 2012/13. Our membership is at a record high with 219 subscribed members. For context that’s over half of chemistry undergraduates over all years!

Our annual chemistry ball had record student and lecturer attendance with the largest budget we’ve had to date.

We had our first “Varsity Social” with Cardiff University, an event we’d like to continue and hopefully host next year!

The PSA’s 55th Year The PSA committee was exceptionally busy this year to ensure that there was something for everyone!

An amazing eight educational events were held, including a Health & Information Talk provided by Intel. These events all aimed to offer a different perspective from conventional lecture learning.

There were numerous socials held too. For those who enjoy a night on the tiles the ‘Prescription Pharmacy Pub Tour’ offered a chance to mingle with other year groups whilst the ‘Movie Night’ created a quiet night in atmosphere.

The PSA have been nominated for the ‘Departmental Society of the Year Award’ for the first time in nearly 10 years!

The biggest success of the year was the Annual Pharmacy Ball which was attended by students and lecturers alike in the formal setting of the Assembly Rooms, Bath. This allowed all who attended to enjoy a classier evening’s entertainment compared to the usual Student Lifestyle.

PhySoc is an energetic society that gives students the chance to geek out together. With adventures to labs, pub lectures and plenty of opportunities to meet up with other students for night time contemplations over beverages.

The amount of Physics we put into our fun, all members can convince themselves they are working hard (instead of hardly working)!

This year in PhySoc...

We successfully re-launched the Bath Cosmos Project! This meant we were treated to three fantastic pub lectures, two trips to the Photonics lab and one to the Slow Positron lab. This meant students could get a clearer idea of the Physics research and interests within their own department.

In our first semester we had plenty of socials for new and old students to get to know each other better. We kicked off with a terrific Karaoke Night, followed by a Mystery Tour and Stargazing Party with the Herschel Museum. The ever popular PhySoc Christmas Meal was one of the main highlights of the year, with a massive turn out from both students and staff! The whole day was a fantastic event with students treated to a special Christmas lecture by the department before the meal kicked off.

We were also lucky enough to be welcomed by staff and our very own students at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory! Finally, we secured funding from the IoP for our departmental joint bid on the HiSPARC project! If successful, this will allow students to become more involved in current research and outreach programmes within the community!

IDEIA encourages people to share different ideas in various topics through films, presentations or speakers.

Ethical & Political Society of the Year BUDS (Debating Society) The membership of the debating society this year has not only expanded by 40%, but they have also had a rise in active membership with a two fold increase in the number of people attending weekly sessions.

The society has had a complete re-brand, even launching their own mobile app. They have started a 1st year rep initiative, and more students than ever before have taken part in IV’s across the country with the Bath IV being the best attended ever.

 They had held the first TEDx event which invited guests to share their experiences with the students.

People and Planet is the only society that looks into environmental issues on campus.

Atheists, Humanists & Secularists

 They held various campaigns and some social events like “pick the berry” day to raise awareness about the importance of ethical issues. During Fairtrade fortnight they tried to get more students to buy Fairtrade products and help celebrate all things Fairtrade through various activities including a Fairtrade tea-party enabling students to get involved and be aware of the current Fairtrade issues.

The Debating society create a healthy environment for debate on topical issues amongst members and helps the members to develop skills in public speaking.

 The biggest event in the year is the Bath Inter Varsity competition where we host teams from universities around the UK here on campus for a one day debating tournament.

Innovative Development Association (IDEIA)

Model United Nations simulates United Nations Procedures and discusses current problems that are of global importance through dialogue and diplomacy.

 They hosted their first international bath MUN conference, with delegates coming from Switzerland, Czech Republic and Russia, hosting over 100 delegates and chairs from 20 universities. By using our university's interpreting labs they were able to have a council functioning in all the 6 official languages of the UN. Engineers Without Borders are a charity that lifts barriers to development through engineering.  They were visited by the CEO of EWB - UK. And performed a testing of their home made mini-wind turbines. They also run outreach workshops with over 110 pupils from local schools.

The Law society advises and provides information for students who want to pursue a legal career.  They invited a Senior Partner from a law firm, Kelcey and Hall to talk during Peace week.

Amnesty holds weekly meetings and discussions on Human Rights issues. They have debates, presentations, petitions, creative campaigning stunts on campus and letter writing oportunities.  They held 'Jamnesty', an evening of live local bands hosted at a local pub, to raise money for Amnesty International and raise awareness of human rights issues around the world. They raised £193 for charity by screening a documentary called 'Call Me Kuchu' which is about the lives of LGBT activists in Uganda.

What do we do?

The University of Bath Debating Society is an ambitious yet friendly society which serves to facilitate healthy debate amongst students and the community. We hold weekly debating sessions, and debate in the British parliamentary style.

The society encourages its members to take part in debating competitions that are held at universities across the country such as Oxford, LSE, UCL, Bristol, Exeter and Reading, to name but a few. The society has also sent teams to debating competitions in Paris, and the World Championships in Botswana. We also hold our own debating competition every year, which has been well attended and a great success in recent years.

Our members are some of the most engaged students at this university, and the society is a great way to harness this potential.

I'm really grateful to the society for allowing me to experience the level of training and opportunities to network you get at competitions.

The society also holds public debates on issues that are of prominence in the national news agenda. In the past these have included a debate on the AV referendum and a General Election Symposium (which was standing room only in a lecture theatre capable of holding 200 students).

We also have a varied social calendar, with recent events including a pub quiz and Christmas meal.

Success in 2012/13: Our weekly training sessions went from strength to strength. Whereas previously we had only held one debate a week, we were able to consistently hold at least two. This proved popular with members who were more engaged by this greater choice.

After all debates committee judges provided Rise in membership numbers of over 40% individual feedback to all speakers, an Facebook ‘Likes’ up by over 70 illustration of the continual development provided through participation.

We were able to pay the entry fees for all the competitions that our members attended across the UK. This was fantastic as it ensured equal access and did not prevent members from experiencing such competitions for financial reasons. This sets us apart from some other university debating societies where there is often a greater cost burden on members.

Held on 3rd November, the society’s own Inter Varsity competition was a great success. There was a strong turnout, including teams from the universities of Bristol and Southampton.

We travel all around the UK, attending conferences in London, Edinburgh, Oxford and Cambridge, and at the end of the year we host our very own MUN conference here on campus!

This year in BUMUN… We have had a busy but extremely productive year! To start off, we hosted the third annual FAME XIII fashion show. Through an evening of fashion (generously provided by L.K. Bennet and Traffic people), music and dance we managed to raise over £2000 for the United Nations World Food Program! The funds are directed towards Molly’s Food Campaign, a project aimed at feeding school-age children the slums of Nairobi, Kenya.

We continued our year by hosting our fourth Annual Bath Model United Nations Conference. BathMUN ’13 was a very special conference for our society because for the first time in our history we hosted an international conference. Over 100 delegates, from twenty universities from around the United Kingdom as well as Europe attended our three-day conference and found solutions to today’s most pressing global problems.

In addition, we attended over 10 conferences throughout the UK Including LIMUN, OXIMUN and Edinburgh MUN!

Bath University Law Society (BULS) What we do: The Bath University Law Society (BULS) aims to assist, advise and provide information for students interested in pursuing a legal career after completing their non-law degree. Whilst maintaining relationships with leading firms and schools, including Allen & Overy, Linklaters, and the College of Law, we intend to expand upon our current network, both locally and nationally. BULS hosts a range of events, from socials to career-focussed activities.

EWB-Bath Who We Are: Engineers Without Borders is a charity promoting progress through innovation and engineering in the developing world. We raise awareness at University and in schools, provide training and organize large scale projects with other groups in the UK.

What We Do: Training Workshops: we bring students together to give them the opportunity to build the basis of green technologies Projects: we love going big and that's why we have built a full scale wind-turbine! We are also setting up out first Branch Project, an EWB supported international activity aimed at sending students to developing countries to make a difference in the poorer regions of the world Outreach Workshops: by going to local schools, we teach pupils the importance of Engineering and its impact in the poorer regions of the world.

We ran events in 4 primary schools this year, and we have even bigger plans for next year!

The Faith and Cultural area is the biggest of the 5 areas, chiefly because students at the University of Bath come from very diverse backgrounds!

Here are some very successful events the societies have organised:

 BAMSA organised a successful Sports day in Bath (SPLASH) in March. The event brought Malaysian, Singaporean and Bruneian students in the UK together. It was a very fun and joyful afternoon for all the athletes and audience.

 Cysoc has been a very active society this year. They organised a lot of activities not only for Cypriot students but also for other international students. Their activities were always very popular. For example, they had a dance performance on parade, and attracted a crowd to stop and watch during the OneBath event. They participated in Radiomarathon UK where they sold coffee to help raise money for charity. They brought in all the ingredients from Cypriot and the event was a massive success.

 China Ren organised a singing contest in March and attracted some very talented students to take part in the competition.

 The Chinese Student Society organised a joint-university variety show. They have been recruiting actors/actresses since the start of the year and had a very sophisticated team to plan and organise the show. The event attracted Chinese students from other UK universities to enjoy the performance.

 Cathsoc has been dedicated in welcoming Catholic and non-Catholic students. They organised a bi-yearly Ceilidh and it is always a sold-out event.

 The German society organised a trip to Berlin during Easter. The event was successful and received positive feedback from participants.

 The Islamic society has been very proactive in advocating Peace throughout the year.

They organised a Gaza fund-raising event in response to the violence and political instability at that time. Under the leadership of Mujeeb Zia, they organised a Peace Week on campus in March. This received a lot of attention and students were interested in the events that the society organised.

 Vietbath organised a cultural night in March promoting their traditional culture and dance. It was a sold-out event. They ordered food from a Vietnamese restaurant and everybody was impressed with the show on the night.

Faith & Cultural Society of the Year CySoc (Cypriot Society) The Cypriot Society has been one of the most active Faith & Cultural Societies this year, actively looking for new ideas and events since the start of Semester 1.

Their committment to wanting to run a food festival directly contributed to One Bath Week raising it’s profile dramatically.

They have taken the initiative to propose joint society events and to network with other cultural groups. Alongside which their performances on Parade during One Bath definitely drew a crowd.

The Catholic Society *CathSoc+ is a group of friendly students who meet every week to socialise, discuss ideas, as well as worship together.

Join us for our weekly Thursday meeting we may have Taizé Prayer, Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Reflection sessions. Friday lunchtimes we have Rosary for Peace - a Gospel inspired prayer. Every Sunday on campus during term time we celebrate Holy Mass with our Chaplain Father Bill OSM. Each semester we hold a Ceilidh (a type of Irish Barn Dance) and Retreats to give everyone a time to relax and recharge in body, mind and faith. Some of our other social events include film nights, roller skating and occasional Ten in a Team Table Tennis matches - an unorthodox dash round the table with more than the usual players!

This year has seen the launch of successful new ventures for CathSoc. A Lectio Divina Group, first organised by Father Bill, has a CathSoc core group now meeting on Wednesday mornings. This Bible reflection group allows our members to read Scripture, meditate and pray together. The Lectio Divina group nicely complements the new monthly discussion meetings, where a member would prepare a short presentation on a topic and discusses it with the group.

Also this year we had two beautiful retreats at Nympsfield, visited Downside Abbey, organised by Father Bill, met visiting Chilean students promoting Lectio Divina and enjoyed a great meal with the monks as well as participated in Taizé Prayer occasions held at Prior Park College and on campus with other young people in the wider Bath community; at which guest students from Taizé were present.

Bang! (Bath Anglican Society) is a small, friendly society with a slight Christian bias. We try to provide a welcoming, social atmosphere through a range of different activities.

Our weekly meetings consist mostly of informal discussions on a range of subjects including gay marriage, body image and immigration. Cake is always provided!

We hold an annual retreat in February to give members a break from university life after exams, which includes time for relaxation, discussions led by a guest speaker, games, walks and cake.

Fortnightly open discussion events Some of the topics we have covered in the fortnightly events in 2012-13 include: ‘fate and free will’; ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ (Karma and Reincarnation); ‘Life was much easier when apples and blackberries were just fruits’; ‘He’s just not that into you’ (Valentines Day Special); and meditation sessions.

Rangoli Art Workshop-November 2012 For the second year running we joined up with Splat Art and BUASS to do a fun rangoli workshop, where fantastic pieces of art were made with some coloured rice, glue and cardboard!

The Getaway Retreats-November 2012 and March 2013 These were great opportunities to meet other university students in KC Socs across the country at the Bhaktivedanta Manor, Watford. The days involved: yoga, mantra meditation, interactive discussion, ’Come dine with me’cooking session, cow milking, and lunch!

Peace Week-February 2013 Members got involved in the first University of Bath Peace Week by taking part in the great events put on during the week such as ‘Why and how to love your neighbour’-discussion with a multi-faith panel; Buddhist meditation event; and free yoga taster sessions at the STV. Supported by the National Krishna Consciousness Society

BUASS predominantly want to meet new people, interact with everyone and have a good time, and does so by welcoming people of all different cultures and nationalities to celebrate and engage in Asian Culture. We celebrate a wide variety of different cultural festivities and events such as Diwali, Eid, Holi, Gurpurab as well as having Bollywood dance classes, film nights and ultra-smashing socials at second bridge throughout the year! The Bath Area Malaysian and Singaporean Association (BAMSA) is a student society with a majority of members from Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. We’ve conducted a number of fun activities for the 2012/2013 academic year, socials and trips included! We welcome people from all walks of life to join in the fun as we’re all about diversity! Throughout the year, we organized two of our flagship events: BAMSA Night and SPLASH@Bath.

BAMSA Night!

The University’s Malaysian & Singaporean students present a retelling of the Brunei legend of Jong Batu. When a son returns to his homeland with newfound wealth, he looks forward to introducing his mother to his glamorous new wife. The meeting doesn’t go to plan, and he is forced to make a painful decision. This ancient tale of romance and piety is brought vividly to life in a night filled with music, drama and dance.

What we do ChinaRen is a Chinese student society at the University of Bath. Our members are mainly from mainland China. However, we are very welcoming to students from different parts of the world, who are keen to know about Chinese culture. It is also a good opportunity to make friends and to learn to speak Mandarin. We plan numerous socials each year to help our members relax after intense study.

This is what we pursued in the past years, and we will continue to do it in the future.

This year in ChinaRen We organised a lot of interesting events this year. In Fresher’s Week, we held a BBQ by the lake and gave new students an opportunity to get to know each other. After that, we held a football match with the Korean Society and Board Games in the Plug Bar. There were also Basketball competitions and a Badminton tournament in the first and second term.

More importantly, our Karaoke show as the annual event, was very successful as well. The contestants were commented as the highest level of singing among all years before.

The aim of Bath CSS is to promote the Chinese culture and create an attentive atmosphere for Chinese students at the University of Bath.

We organised several events to build and maintain a strong connection within our members.

This year in CSS We have organised several trips and activities in order to fulfil the aim of CSS. The leavers party maintains the warm atmosphere in our society and is our last expression of gratitude to our leavers. We have an IKEA trip for the freshers to get the requisites. The variety show showcases our members’ talents, building up the friendships between members and acting as a networking tool with other universities.

Our main objective this year was to attract more members and promote our culture not only to Cypriots but to EVERYONE. The Cypriot culture encompasses our dialect, history, religion, customs, cuisine, music and temperament. We promote our traditions the most fun way possible! We try and cover all the different tastes of our members by organizing a variety of fun events that give our members the opportunity to experience the culture of Aphrodite’s Island, first hand.

German Society What we do: We hold regular socials for our members to improve their German, experience different elements of German culture and meet other German enthusiasts.

We welcome everyone, whether they are native, studying the subject or have only just started learning the language, as long as they have a keen interest in German!

What we have done: This year our membership has increased tenfold and we have had an amazing first full year as a society. Our main highlight was our first trip abroad, where 18 members flew to Berlin for four unforgettable days. See the photos on the left and the box below to find out what we got up to.

We launched off the year with our own take on Oktoberfest; complete with beer pong, pretzels and German music. We then began our fortnightly Stammtisch meetings, where we regularly met up and conversed in German. We synchronised this with our monthly Tatort sessions. This favourite German show is a murder mystery and there was Haribo for the people who guessed the murderer correctly. A little later in the year we held our own mini Easter Egg hunt on campus, with plenty of German Berlin 2013 chocolate. We will round off the year  History: Jewish Museum, German with a society meal and reminiscing.

KOREAN SOCIETY What we do…

BUKS is a friendly group of Koreans who meet together and try to make the most of our time in university together. We welcome both Korean and non-Korean students to dive into a lively blend of Korean and British culture. We aim to provide a welcoming and relaxed environment where members can mingle with each other to help Korean students ease into life in the UK and allow students of other nationalities to join in with the Korean culture.

To start off with, we had our K-POP Party where we all had a blast! Dancing to the latest K-pop tunes (not just Gangnam Style).

Then we had our Christmas ball with lots of fancy food and plenty of fun and games. Next, we celebrated the New Year with traditional Korean games.

We welcome students from all nationalities to join us. Why not learn more about Korean culture while making the most of your University Experience?

We had smaller socials like pub nights and meals together where we enjoyed “chillaxed” evenings together.

LITHUANIAN SOCIETY Coming from a country with less than 3 million people, Lithuanians have established a society which gathers not only Lithuanians, but everyone who is fascinated by this small exotic European country.

We celebrate national fests, organize regular socials and cultural events such as Lithuanian movie nights.

There is a saying that basketball is our second religion, hence there is a rumour coming around that next year a recreational basketball team of the society members will be established!

This year we tried to involve non-Lithuanians as much as possible, and this work will be continued next year.

The Lithuanian language is one of the oldest languages in the world. It remarkably resembles ancient Sanskrit, Latin and Greek, and surprisingly to many people, has nothing to do with Slavic languages.

We are an open and inclusive society that welcomes all members regardless of their nationality. Our aim is to promote a better understanding of the values and traditions of the Romanian culture in a fun and relaxing environment.

2012-2013 was our first year of existence at Bath and what a great year it was!

As Romanian movies have been widely appreciated for their particularity of portraying vivid images from the past, the Romanian society was eager to present the multiple award winner movie: “The death of Mr Lazarescu”.

March is a symbolic month for the Romanian culture. And how to better celebrate it than to have a red and white themed social followed by a free food event?

Romania’s National Day is celebrated on the 1st of December and we could not miss the chance to give our members a special treat.

British, International and Romanian students enjoyed a traditional food night in London at a Romanian restaurant along with students from other Universities across the UK. At our first Romanian Social entitled “Dracula’s Party” count Dracula’s presence was felt through a group of people, all dressed in red and black, with fake fangs wondering the streets of Bath. The money gathered from this event was donated to the Romanian Aid trip organized by the SCA.

“Hi I’m Charlie and I have been the Societies Executive this year representing all the Recreational Societies. The role has been great fun and has really expanded my knowledge of the SU and helped me being on a society committee this year. As the Recreational Representative I get to meet all the Recreational Society committees, and help them with anything they need, whether this be organising events or requiring more equipment.”

The Recreational Area is a really interesting and diverse area to work in, with societies ranging from meditation to poker to curry, and has given me an invaluable insight into how all 18 societies function. This has involved helping the committees plan Christmas Socials, write Special Request Applications for trips and new equipment, and prepare for committee elections which recently took place. Some of the main achievements in the area this year have included:

 The Wine Society beating Bristol in the inaugural Pol Roger blind wine tasting competition, and introducing their members to wines from all over the world.

 The Vegetarian Society creating a cook book, and being successful with their Special Request Application for new cooking equipment.

This year PoleSoc have put a lot of effort into raising the profile of the society. There are a lot of preconceptions about poledancing and through performances, a promo video and have a go, sessions people are starting to realise quite how much exercise it actually is.

They gained 15 new members in Semester 2 due to re-fresh week performances, and work closely with the society at Bath Spa. The passion for the society is evident, and they have definitely come a long way since affiliation 3 years ago.

What is LARP?

What is BLADES?

Live Action RolePlaying (LARP) is a game where the participants physically act out their characters' actions. The players pursue goals within a fictional setting represented by the real world, while interacting with each other in character.

Many of our members are enthusiastic LARPers and regularly attend events run by a local club (BathLARP) every Sunday and large national festival events - often with 100s of LARPers!

What do we do?

TonyLARP (TL) — TL (named after the student who created it) is a “fantasy” rule system. Think Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones!

NERF LARP — NERF is a brand of toy guns TonyLARP — Three of our members in their home completely safe for children (and students) to made rat-man costumes. shoot each other! NERF are perfect for futuristic LARP games such as Alien vs Predator and zombie apocalypses! This is the first year that we've organised these events but we've had a couple of great evenings!

Workshops — Making costumes is one of the most fun and most rewarding parts of the hobby. You can buy ready made costumes but, on a budget, making your own is a great idea!

This year we’ve run workshops to teach some of the basic and advanced skills you’d need.

We get together every other week for a 'Bring your own bake' meeting held on Mondays at 7:15pm or Wednesdays at 1:30pm.

These meetings are usually themed and they are a great chance to showcase your creations and get ideas from other members.

We also regularly hold friendly competitions with prizes up for grabs.

Comic Relief Bake Sale

We held our very first Great TeamBAKE Bake Off competition this year to raise money for Comic Relief. The theme was of course Red Nose Day themed. There were two rounds: presentation and taste with prizes for the winner of each round as well as a prize for the most Red Nose Day themed/funniest bake. Each entry cost £1 with the proceeds going to Comic Relief and the winner of each round was decided by the audience.

We are regularly asked by numerous societies and event organisers to hold bake sales. Our members donate cakes in addition to their time on the day to help. So far we have helped the MS Society, RUH Cancer Care, and RAG raise money. The recent Red Nose Day bake sale raised over £160 for Comic Relief.

What we do...

This year with BUCAS

BUCAS is all about celebrating curry and appreciating the offerings of Bath’s curry houses, some of the finest in the South West. We are one of the largest societies on campus, and have a great reputation for organising fantastic socials.

We have organised 6 socials this year, cramming in an extra social a semester compared to last year. This year, we have aimed to bring our members the best deals possible when it comes to Indian cuisine. The year was started off with an all-you-can-eat buffet at The Eastern Eye. Being the first social of the year, it was important to start big and we weren’t disappointed! The social sold out with many attendees being new to the society. From there, we have visited Panahar, Rajpoot, Boojon Tandoori, Bengal Brasserie and Jamuna! Not only have we offered cheap, quality meals but we have also secured reduced entry deals with local clubs for those who didn’t want the Achievements night to end at the restaurant. The socials have been a fantastic way to forget about work deadlines, eat  Have completely some amazing food (important for students) and rebranded the society meet new people. Bath University Guides and Scouts BUGS is a recreational society whose members are interested in the aims, objectives and methods of The Scout Association and Girlguiding. BUGS members can discover guiding and scouting in both leadership roles as well as through our social programme. The programme usually consists of meeting once a week for various activities that usually fall under 3 categories; adventure, social and community. The local leaders of scout and guide groups are made up of 20% students.

This year BUGS attended 4 national SSAGO events in Leeds, Manchester, Cardiff and an international trip to Switzerland called WITAN where members hiked, swam in an alpine lake, made interational friends and visited Geneva.

We also extended relations with local universities (Cardiff, Plymouth & Portsmouth) though the South West Freshers Competition. One of our members even won “Fresher of the Year”.

Achievements of BUGS this year:  Increase in fresher recruitment and the activity of our members, with more

attending weekly events and trips.  Winning a bid to host the 2014 SSAGO Spring

Rally here in Bath with the theme of “Bathtime!”. 150+ Student Guide and Scouts from universities across the country will be spending the weekend in Bath taking part in hikes, city tours and a ceilidh!  We have had a large number of volunteer

What we do‌ The Bath University Motorcycle Club is a society for any and all students with an interest in motorcycling.

Owning a motorcycle, or having a licence, is not at all a requirement. We have almost-weekly rideouts during good weather, and are able to provide helmets, jackets, gloves and boots to anybody who wants to come along as a pillion.

We also go mini-moto racing a couple of times a year, which is a great way to let out some aggression on a motorbike in a safe environment, and we are usually present at the December "Santa's on a Bike" charity ride for Children's Hospice Southwest, which sees hundreds of bikers dressed as Santa hit the roads in and around Bristol.

A rideout usually consists of meeting in the bike park under the Parade or at the Sainsbury's petrol station in town. We then ride in convoy to a nice pub for a spot of lunch, before returning home.

The club is primarily a social affair. There is no compulsory attendance of any events, and no competitive aspect (except at mini-moto, of course).

This year in BUMCC‌ This year we had several rideouts to Cheddar (a perennial favourite route!), and are currently running a Fantasy Motorbike Racing league for club members as part of the Motorcycle News fantasy league.

For the year to come, we plan to rideout to watch a round or two of the British Superbike Championship, and also a motorcycling holiday (duration and route dependent on interest - most likely either a weekend in Wales or a week in Europe).

What we do Games! BUTTS (Bath University Table Top Society) is a place to meet and play games with like minded people. Our focus is on RPGs, like Dungeons & Dragons and Iron Kingdoms and on boards games like Settlers of Catan (trading and road building), Snow Tales (a game of husky racing) and Race for the Galaxy (creating a plateau of planets and industry).

This year in BUTTS We played a lot of games and went to the pub a lot!

Some of our fantastic members organised a Magic: the Gathering tournament which was exceptionally popular. Campaigns of 5-10 weeks in length were run in the first semester and second with great success and enjoyment for all involved.

The Buddhist Meditation Society holds a set of weekly secular sessions aimed at promoting relaxation and peace of mind through meditation and Buddhist philosophy. Each session has a topic and begins with a simple breathing meditation. A discussion of the topic follows and the session ends with a longer meditation, which may be guided. Members will then be invited to chat over tea - an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded people.

Meditation is essentially a quieting of the mind through focus or distraction. The purpose of meditation is to make the mind calm and peaceful. When the turbulence of distracting thoughts subsides and the mind becomes still, a deep happiness and contentment arises naturally from within. Meditation is easy to learn and provides benefits very quickly – this society serves as an opportunity to share and learn from other meditators.

We organized two successful trips to the Amitabha Buddhist Centre in Bristol where members were given the opportunity to enjoy different teaching styles, meet new people, share experiences and interact with highly experienced practitioners.

In addition, we arranged for Buddhist Monk Kelsang Namkha to give a talk on “transforming adversities in the workplace”.

We play chess—the game of kings! All skill levels are welcome and beginners are encouraged to come along and join in. We also have cookies.

For those wanting to play more serious, competitive chess we are also part of the local chess league where we compete against local teams.

We also play all sorts of board games, go, backgammon, monopoly etc. Feel free to bring your own games in and you’re guaranteed to find people to play with.

We have had around 130 members join the society this year, which is more members than ever before, we have also had more prizes on Final Table than ever before. The Final Table Tournament was held on April 21st this year, and it was our best ever! All of our income gets used for prizes, and only the top 9 of the year play, with others welcome to spectate. At the start of the year the weekly poker tournaments were drawing in up to 100 people.

Refresh Fair

About Us PoleSoc is a Pole Fitness Society. We have classes three times a week with students from Bath Spa University at a local gym.

There are 6 static (i.e non-spinning) poles, and on average there are 3 people per pole. In classes we start off with a basic warm up, then practice our spins, static holds and inversions.

After this we have a chance to work on our own goals, either mastering advanced tricks or creating dance routines. Finally we all do a stretch and cool down together.

The classes are open for anyone at either university, and our members vary enormously. One thing that they all have in common is their passion for the society.

We also put on demonstrations and our members take part in showcases and competitions.

One Bath

This Year This year has been PoleSoc’s most successful ever. We’ve reached a record number of members, and maintained a high level of participation throughout.

We’ve also had 5 different demonstrations on campus, had members take part in 3 different showcases, and 2 competitions, as well as having a video of our class made by CTV. Our relationship with our counterparts at Bath Spa has continued to grow, with members enjoying the opportunity to socialise with people they might not have met elsewhere.

Recently PoleSoc and its members have also been shortlisted for 3 Activities Awards, and we are extremely proud of this achievement.

Indoor Flying sessions have been a big success this year with a myriad of indoor helicopters and even some planes!

What we do...

We are the society for Radio Controlled Modelling. Anyone can join with any level of experience, you don't need to own, or buy anything. All equipment is provided and we can teach you everything you need to know! The society currently focuses on Planes and Helicopters (and variants) and we run regular building, flying and simulator practice sessions.

During our Building sessions you can either get involved building aircraft for the Society or bring along / start your own projects. Other members will be happy to advise or help and its a great way to learn about how the models work. Flying sessions are organised weekly whenever the weather is best, the committee bring along the club aircraft and many members bring along theirs which they've built. People fly until they run out of batteries! Simulator sessions let new members learn the basics and more experienced members practice advanced aerobatics. It's also a great time to ask questions and get to know people.

This year in RCModelSoc...

Multi-copters have also been a great success this year with Tri and Quad Copters flying around campus. Several research projects are currently looking into these and we've been able to assist in getting their projects off the ground!

In just our second year as an affiliated society we've been focusing on expanding the club fleet and investing in more and better equipment.

Alongside this we've also been looking into new areas including Onboard Video, Multi-copters, Indoor Flight, and much more.

Also several of our members attended the Royal Aeronautical Society AeroChallenge Event and came first in the Free Flight Model Competition, for the second year in a row!

This year several of our members have been experimenting with Onboard Video, from filming flights to photographing sports events with great success and some impressive footage to show!

Last year the club had one operating trainer, we now have 3, and are in the process of building a Delta aircraft for the more experienced members, Members have also been building many of their own models and it's now not uncommon to have more than 10 operational on any given day! Also, thanks to Union and Alumni funding, we are now reaching the point where all the required equipment is owned by the society.

What we do...

The members of the Sci-fi and Fantasy society are able to attend an immense three screenings per week. During this, we take advantage of the almost cinema-style lecture theatres to watch our films and T.V. programmes. As well as this, there are also various socials throughout the year, including two epic sci-fi and fantasy quizzes each year, testing your knowledge to the max! Sound good?

Well, we aren't just about aliens, spaceships and the odd troll (though there is a little bit of that too). The screenings we show at sci-fi are a real mixture introspective artsy stuff, explosive action and special effects, hilarious comedy, stunning international films and much more! We truly have something for everyone! The small membership fee covers all the screenings we show, and members are free to come to as many, or as few, as they wish. We are also the closest thing to an anime society at the university.

This year in Sci-Fi and Fantasy‌ We have continued to put on a wide selection of films and series, with some timeless classics such as Adams Family Values and Ghostbusters, as well as big blockbuster names including Looper and The Avengers, and lastly even Madoka Magica for those anime fans out there! We have also had well attended meals at Jimmy Spices, Yen Sushi and Gourmet Burger Kitchen, as well as those we had a competitive Laser Fusion social in Bristol with Film Soc. One of most attended events was the Winter Quiz, with 7 teams entering, each trying to score as many points in the tricky and cunning quiz rounds written by the committee, not to mention the on-going craft round that saw some truly creative and interesting creations!

What does LINKS do?

University of Bath LINKS aims to provide first aid training to anyone who wishes to learn.

Additionally LINKS provides essential first aid cover at a variety of events; from sporting to arts. First aid is a basic skill that can be utilised by everyone and so everyone is welcome.

What events have LINKS covered?

This year LINKS was involved in providing first aid coverage for a number of events both on and off campus. Just some of them include: Freshers’ Week & Bath Half Marathon Also, regular social events !

The Video Game Society What we do: Obviously, we play Video Games. Every 5-6 weeks we hold a LAN at the university; where we all meet up, play our favourite games, eat pizza and have a good laugh. BUNCS trying out new games at Eurogamer

Even before lectures started in September, BUNCS activities were already happening. Over the summer, we hosted weekly online “Summer Gaming” sessions. During Fresher’s Week, BUNCS had an outing to London’s Eurogamer Expo, where our members got to try out the latest games, even before they were released.

Near the end of the first semester the society went to the Bath Film Festival, where we watched a selection of fantastic films. One of which was War Games, after which we had the chance to talk to a game developer from Introversion Software.

After exams we had a 4 day Mega LAN, where we were visited by a local media technology company, who brought along a 3D TV for BUNCS members to try out.

Nearing the end of the year, BUNCS alongside URB hosted “The Best of the South West", where students from Plymouth, Exeter, Cardiff and Bath competed in a League of Legends Tournament.

What we do We are a group for people who enjoy vegetarian food and cooking. We meet every Wednesday (5-7pm) during term time to cook a delicious vegetarian meal in the University chaplaincy. For an annual membership of £4 you can enjoy a wonderfully cooked meal every single week! This society is open to anyone who appreciates vegetarian food; you don’t have to be vegetarian to join!

How it works It’s not just committee members that can bring a recipe and get out the pans!

Any member of the society can volunteer to cook each week, so if you have a favourite recipe to show-off or want to try something new it is the perfect opportunity.

As well as our weekly meetings we also organise social events which usually involve a meal out at a vegetarian friendly restaurant. We have also organised film nights, roller discos, themed nights and much more!

What we do…

We hold weekly events on Tuesday evenings to share our appreciation of wine, hosted by the committee, and speakers both internal and external.

We focus on a different area each week, whether it’s a country, a region within a country or some other wine-related thing!

Won the inaugural Pol Roger Bath vs. Bristol blind wine tasting competition 2013 The Oxford vs. Cambridge version of this competition has been going for 50 years and the prize is a weekend in Champagne
