WELCOME TO THE FESTIVAL

CONTENTS The Scots Fiddle Festival

The Scots Fiddle Festival started in 1996 with the aim to promote and sustain traditional fiddle music. 20 years on this is still our aim and, over the years, the number of events at the festival has tripled. It brings people together from all over the world, as performers and audience members, and continues to inspire thousands to take part in traditional music, either as players, learners, listeners or dancers. Our all-volunteer committee spends the year organising the festival and is helped, at the weekend itself, by a further army of enthusiastic volunteers. Huge thanks to all of them and everyone who makes the festival what it is.

Iain is a well known fiddler in his own right and is one of the top fiddle players in Scotland. All of the ceilidh dances can be called by the band to ensure everyone can join in whatever their experience.

Duncan Chisholm

FESTIVAL CLUB (SUMMERHALL)

Duncan Chisholm is one of the most accomplished and authentic interpreters of traditional Highland fiddle music. Duncan’s music is elegant, trancelike and laced with strokes of genius. The correlation between music and the natural world lies at the heart of Duncan’s motivation and inspiration. Subsequent to the release of his seminal album Redpoint, the elements that make the Highlands of Scotland such a unique canvas have been the force behind Duncan’s music - his melodic interpretations seeking to paint imagined visual pictures through music. Having spent recent months touring his superbly evocative Strathglass Trilogy at venues and festivals throughout the UK and Europe, Duncan has enjoyed much deserved international acclaim. He now looks forward to performing at a handpicked selection of Scottish venues during winter 2016 and being part of the Scots Fiddle Festival at The Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh. He will be joined on stage tonight with Conal McDonagh and Innes Watson.

11pm – 1am, Dissection Room. Tickets £4

Pentlands

Hayley & Dylan

Haley and Dylan Richardson are a young sibling duo of traditional Irish musicians from the United States. They have amassed a long list of accomplishments, performed together at venues all over the United States, and shared the stage with many of the icons in Irish music. They released their debut album, Heart on a String, in March 2015. Haley is the 2015 Junior Fiddler of Dooney and in 2013 won All Ireland Championships in both fiddle and fiddle slow airs. Dylan’s playing is influenced by the legendary John Doyle. His driving rhythms and interesting chord choices back Haley’s melodies perfectly.

The Strathspey and Surreal Society

Adam Sutherland comes from Errogie on the south shores of Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland. He is one of Scotland’s most exciting fiddle players, composers and teachers. Outfits that Adam has been a part of include Treacherous Orchestra, Session A9, Peatbog Faeries, Babelfish and Croft no. Five. He has also played with a host of other well known acts including Salsa Celtica and Manran. Adam’s tunes are perhaps his most impressive legacy and are played in music sessions and on youtube videos around the world!

Created with the idea of writing new music based on the traditional Strathspey and Reel Society form, this project premiered earlier this year in The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as part of Celtic Connections, and are now set to perform their idyllic music for you at Fiddle 2016. The group of 20+ fiddlers will perform four stunning compositions by Aidan O’Rourke, Shona Mooney, Jenn Austin and Simon Thoumire, and will be conducted by Dave Milligan. You simply cannot beat the stunning soundscape created by this stupendous collection of musicians.

A quote from Adam: “The content of the concert will be a performance of my own compositions, all of which feature on my album Squall and in my first ever book of tunes entitled The Errogie Collection, which will be launched at the fiddle festival.”

SUNDAY RECITAL SERIES (SUMMERHALL)

SUNDAY

MAIN HALL. Hours of concert play for the price of a Day Ticket, Saver or Full Weekend Ticket

3 pm : Gregor Borland Bob Turner

Neil Ewart is from Kilchoan in Ardnamurchan and his main focus has been with his band, Sketch, who have had great success with their two albums followed by domestic and international tours over the last couple of years. Newcastleborn Luc’s background in traditional music comes from many influences. Under the guidance of Kathryn Tickell, Ian Stephenson, Amy Thatcher and Shona Kipling he has gained a diverse repertoire of tunes and songs.

Gregor Borland’s fiddling heritage is impressive – a student of two legends of the Scottish fiddle, Donald Riddell and Hector MacAndrew, and 8 times Scottish Fiddle Champion. Gregor now teaches the same style of fiddle to students all over the world and in his own fiddling camps in Scotland and Spain. As a performer, he has toured all over the world with high profile musicians including Davie Steel, Kathryn Tickell and Burach to name a few, from a young age. He has many recordings to his name but Bowstrokes is his only solo recording to date. The recital will consist of traditional North East and Highland tunes as well as more up to date tunes and compositions.

“Scottish fiddler redefines modern Celtic folk” (Q)

For many years she attended Feis Lochabair and studied music at Lochaber College. She is currently in first year at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow on the BMus Traditional Music Course. The focus of this recital is to portray the relationship between West Coast and Cape Breton fiddle playing, highlighting the similarities and differences between these two styles.

4 pm : Claire Mann and Aaron Jones Claire Mann and Aaron Jones met on the thriving Edinburgh folk music scene in 1997 and over the years they have developed a unique and exciting musical relationship, enthralling audiences with their mixture of traditional and original Scottish and Irish music and song. He has been playing the fiddle since he was thirteen years old, learning many tunes from his uncle and his father. His family hails from the Highlands of Glen Moriston and Aonghas is a Gaelic speaker and a natural-born storyteller, bringing tales of close friends and long-ago people and events equally alive.

Workshop Room 1 (intermediate / advanced) Chris Stout’s workshop will focus on his own compositions over the last 20 years. Sara will explain pain, drawing upon everything from psychoanalytical theories about psyche-soma to neurophysiology and anatomy. She will think about why it is so hard for a fiddle player to balance what’s best for their body with their passion (and bank balance).

SATURDAY (SUMMERHALL) s2 : BOOK LAUNCH & SIGNING : adam sutherland

Anything from tuning the fiddle, playing in tune, tone, position work, bow hold, bow position, speed of bow, phrasing, reels, jigs, slow airs, playing from memory and so on. Or, simply play a short tune and Marie will offer areas to focus on. A relaxed, unique and individual experience.

Courtyard Gallery : 11.30am : non-ticketed Highland fiddler Adam Sutherland is releasing the first ever collection of his own compositions at this years Scots Fiddle Festival. Joined on keyboards by Hamish Napier, Adam will be playing a selection of his tunes, sharing some of the stories behind them and signing copies of the book.
