East Neuk Festival 2022 brochure

WELCOME Summer 2022: musicians from Kenya, Syria, Spain, Greece, Germany, Czech Republic, Russia, The Netherlands, Hungry, Austria, France, England and Australia come to join Scottish players at East Neuk Festival for a truly international celebration of music and life. Two of the world’s great quartets bring friends to play: Elias Quartet expands to offer a Schubert Octet, while Pavel Haas Quartet expands to offer quintets by Dvořák and Brahms. PHQ also slim down to a trio for more Dvořák and we have a trio of trios led by Rihab Azar, Rapasa Otieno and Shirley Smart exploring jazz and musical traditions from Syria and the Nile valley. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra perform Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven Anstruther Town Hall swings to the sounds of Hollywood thanks to Julian Bliss Septet, and then feels the blazing intensity of Flamenco by the Daniel Martinez Flamenco Company. ENF Retreat ventures into Jazz this year as Nishla Smith uses her residency to create her new work, Aether. Pianist and TV presenter Neil Brand, one of the world’s finest musicians working with silent movies, presents and accompanies a double bill of hilarious Buster Keaton comedies, and leads massed Fife musicians in THUNDERPLUMP - a spectacular new film and music celebration of… the Scottish weather! 2022 is an exceptional year for pianists: Elisabeth Leonskaja returns with her beloved Schubert and the magnificent experience that is Beethoven’s last 3 sonatas. Boris Giltburg makes his festival debut, the duo of Samson Tsoy and Pavel Kolesnikov bring us our first ever Rite of Spring in Stravinsky’s 4-hand version and Christian Zacharias closes the festival with one of his final performances as a solo pianist. Finally, we are so excited to welcome the amazing Gandini Juggling to East Neuk to create a one-off performance for The Bowhouse combining stunning music from Sean Shibe and Benjamin Baker with Gandini’s beautiful and virtuosic choreography. There is more to come which will be announced closer to the festival as our Band in a Van pops up around the Neuk and we see the Labyrinth grow again at Kellie Castle. You will notice that we have slimmed down our printed brochure (one of many ways we are trying to reduce the environmental impact of the festival) but you will find lots more information on everything to do with ENF2022 at www.eastneukfestival.com.
