ABOUT THE CHALLENGE BRINGING HISTORY HOME Atlantic Challenge was initiated in 1986, conceived by Lance Lee (USA) and Bernard Cadoret (France), when two gigs from USA and France competed under oars & sails against a backdrop of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbour. Since then, Atlantic Challenge has grown to involve 16 competing countries, and over 70 ‘Bantry Bay Gigs’ have been built worldwide. Irish involvement began in 1987 when Hal Sisk, curator of the Irish Maritime museum was asked to form a crew to participate in the 1988 Atlantic Challenge. Appropriately enough, he contacted Matt Murphy of Bantry Rowing club who took a crew made up of rowing club and sailing club members to Douarnenez, France and competed using a borrowed boat. In 1990, with the help of Bantry Armada Centre, the group had a boat built by Billy Andy O’Driscoll in neighbouring Baltimore. Unité, has represented Ireland at every Atlantic Challenge since, winning the Challenge on four occasions. The gigs are elegant, exhilarating vessels; can be rowed at 6 knots in calm water, and when under sail have a top speed of over 12 knots.

WHERE DID IT ALL START? In December 1796 a French Armada of 48 ships and 13,000 troops under the command of General Hoche and the direction of Wolfe Tone, failed to land in Bantry due to adverse weather conditions. Most of the fleet returned to France but a ships longboat(gig) and her crew were washed ashore on Bere Island. They were quickly apprehended by yeomanry loyal to the crown, under the command of Richard White of Bantry House who later received an earldom for services to the crown. The ‘Bantry Bay Longboat’ as she is now known, was brought to the boathouse at Bantry House, where she lay for 150 years. In 1944 she was presented to the National Museum of Ireland and was subsequently transferred to the Maritime Museum in 1974. The original longboat, the oldest surviving vessel in the French Navy, is now on exhibit in Collins Barracks Museum, Dublin, where Wolfe Tone himself was once imprisoned. The lines used by Atlantic Challenge International to replicate these vessels were taken from the original gig.

OPENING CEREMONY BANTRY 2012 ARE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME OUR PRESIDENT MICHAEL D. HIGGINS TO PERFORM THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE ATLANTIC CHALLENGE CONTEST OF SEAMANSHIP. The day will begin with a Parade of Nations in which all competitors and officials will march through the town with the Carrigaline Pipe Band and members of the Ballingeary Pipe Band. Each nation will be accompanied by young athletes of their host sports clubs from the Bantry area. The President will inspect a full Presidential Guard of Honour of 100 soldiers from the Southern Brigade prior to the official opening with the No 1 Army Band also entertaining the crowd.

THE CREW THAT PERFORMS BEST IN ALL THE TESTS WILL BE DEEMED TO BE THE WINNERS OF THE ATLANTIC CHALLENGE. POINTS ARE SCORED FROM 1 POINT FOR 1ST PLACE, 2 POINTS FOR 2ND PLACE AND SO ON. THE LOWEST POINTS SCORER IS THE WINNER.

SAILING RACE (X2)
This dressage event is a pure test of skill, boat handling, rowing and crew discipline. A ‘Captain’ is transferred from Ship to Shore (or vice versa) and returned again (hopefully).As part of the opening ceremony this is a relaxed colourful event giving a true feel of what the gigs were used for hundreds of years ago.
Crews test their skills under sail at maximum speed around a set course. All crew must trim their sails and get a good position on the start line with a 5-4-1-Go start. These gigs can reach up to 16 knots in ideal conditions. Good spectator event at the turning marks.

ROWING SLALOM Crews race round a buoyed slalom course without a rudder. The boat is steered with oars only and penalties are incurred for hitting buoys. The Cox and crew must be sharp on their oars in this punishing event with start-stop sprinting. This is an exciting event against the clock testing tenacity over a short course. ROPEWORK Selected crew members will demonstrate their skill in traditional knotting, splicing and whipping of ropes. This skill is essential in traditional boats where no modern equipment is allowed. A working explanation of each knot must be explained to the judge and the knot will be tested. Neat and functional ropework is required. OAR & SAIL RACE (X3)
PASSAGE RACE
This race is run over a triangular course of about 3 miles. The crews must row one leg of this course into the wind and then raise masts and sails to sail the other legs. Two laps of this course is usual and there will be three of these races. The transfer from oars to sail is spectacular and the crews will certainly earn their place in this signature event of Atlantic Challenge.
This event takes the crews on a voyage where they must make their own decisions to figure the best way to reach their destination, whether to choose oars or sails is what makes the difference. The crews leave the inner harbour into the open waters of Bantry Bay circumnavigating Whiddy Island and returning to their original starting point. A lengthy task testing all seamanship skills.

JACKSTAY TRANSFER
This is an event where mixed crews from different countries work together and build the spirit of Atlantic Challenge. This is a fun event giving the crews a chance to mix on the water where the course and tasks will be determined on the day. This is a fun event but will be organised to give spectators best viewing. In this event, crews transfer a bag from shore to boat using heaving lines and mast tackle. This is a very skilled event and it is also against the clock. Good communication and teamwork is essential. Exciting to watch and always draws a good audience. Look out for the monkey’s fist!! NAVIGATION Crew members from each team will fix positions, chart courses, complete dead reckoning on the water and generally show that they know where they are and how they got there. This is a technical event run over a long course and is a good test of general seamanship and communication skills. This is a slow event where accuracy is essential. ROWING RACE This is a 2 mile race under oars where skill, strength and stamina are essential to keep these heavy boats at full speed. The race is run off in heats and the crews battle it out head to head with exciting finish potential. Every ounce of energy is needed in this event. MAN OVERBOARD In heats, crews race under sail downwind and at a given signal, the cox jumps overboard, to be replaced by another crew member. The cox is then recovered under oars and the fastest boat with no penalties wins. This is a short event with plenty of action and good viewing. SIGHTS TO BE SEEN WHIDDY ISLAND Situated just off the mainland Whiddy Island has many interesting historical remains including three gun batteries which were part of 18th Century British fortifications. The site of the First World War American Sea Plane base is still visible. A regular ferry operates from Bantry Pier to the island. Information on bicycle hire on the island is available on the ferry. THINGS TO DO FISHING – SHORE ANGLING There are numerous fishing spots signposted on the Beara and Sheep’s Head Peninsulas where a visitor can fish. No permit is required. Fishing rods and tackle can be purchased or rented locally.
FISHING - LAKE ANGLING Lough Bofine, 4km from Bantry is stocked regularly with adult trout. Permits for inland fishery lakes can be obtained locally.
HORSE-RIDING & TREKKING For those who would like to view the countryside on horseback, horses are available locally for trekking.
WALKING
Bantry House was the first Irish stately home to open its doors to the public in 1945. The first Earl of Bantry, Richard White (1767-1851) received his title for the part he played in frustrating the attempted invasion by the French in 1796 . The 2nd Earl of Bantry accumulated a large collection of furniture, tapestries and other works of art which are now on display to the public.
BANTRY MUSEUM, WOLFE TONE SQUARE This small museum, run by the Bantry Historical Society, contains many artefacts of life in Bantry in the past.
MIZEN HEAD & HEAD VISITOR CENTRE Mizen Head with its almost vertical cliffs and a lighthouse station is the extreme south westerly point of Ireland. On the head is the Visitor Centre. Here can be seen on display the fascinating story of the building of the Fastnet lighthouse plus the keepers’ kitchen and
There are two walks recognised by the National Waymarked Ways Committee in the Bantry area, namely Sheep’s Head Way and Beara Way. There are also the Heritage Loop Walks which vary from 2.5km to 5km plus, but they can be linked together to form a walk of more than 20km. These walks are complemented by a series of interpretative boards.
CYCLING Both the Sheep’s Head Way and Beara Way have designated cycle routes that link up with a cycle route from Cork City. Bicycles can be hired locally.

KILNARUANE PILLAR STONE Located a mile outside the town, this is a monument of early Christian times that may have formed the shaft of a High Cross. One of the panels depicts a boat with four oarsmen.

FRINGE FESTIVAL PIRATE DAY: OUR PIRATE HISTORY Bantry Bay and neighbouring Inlets in West Cork were once a favourite haunt of the marauding bands of
pirates as they pillaged the eastern coast of America. The popular local historian,Michael Carroll has documented several Pirate connections to the area, especially Owen O’Sullivan Bere who laundered the ill-gotten gains for the Pirates of the Carribbean. Though Pirates have a reputation for being bloodthirsty and cut-throat, they are also the symbol of their struggle against tyranny and opposing oppressive laws. These ideals are still treasured today by many and celebrated in the numerous Pirate Festivals that are held worldwide. Tales of Adventure on the High Seas will be told in local hostelries. So may fair winds and fortune follow you, me hearties. Enjoy! There will be lots of activities for families, loads of entertainment and a Thieves Market filled with treasure. If you show up without a costume then prepare to walk the plank!
