A Letter from the Dean Grant-A-Wish 2014 Supports Professional Development Our faculty represents the strength of our school. They always hunger to learn more – more about designing curriculum, more about integrating technology into the classroom, and more about understanding how children learn. Brain-based education is a comprehensive approach to teaching that incorporates research from neuroscience to emphasize how the brain learns naturally at varying developmental stages. My wish is for faculty in our School to continue to become experts on the latest in brain-based discoveries. After attending workshops and conferences, the SFC Brain-Based Research Team will share findings with the full faculty and also present to the parent body. Most importantly, they will become change agents in the life of the School. The goal is to ensure that our curriculum, from the 3s to the 13/14s, continues to reflect the best practices in current learning and teaching. This year’s Grant-A-Wish is for professional development. There are many excellent conferences and workshops that focus on the latest research in neuroscience, teaching, and curriculum development, but there is a real cost associated with them. Professional development opportunities for faculty and staff typically include the following: 

Presenting at and participating in local and national workshops and conferences such as the Progressive Educators Conference, NY State Association of Independent Schools workshops, and the People of Color Diversity Conference

Summer stipends for curriculum development and documentation

Coursework in the Graduate School

Visits to local independent and public schools

We need to continue to train our faculty in brain-based research to inform practice in the classroom and heighten student learning. Thank you in advance for your generosity, for supporting Grant-A-Wish 2014 for professional development, and for joining me in continuing to move the School for Children forward. Please consider making a special gift online at , or on the night of the Auction. I’ll see you at the auction! -Alexis
