COME SEPTEMBER, COME BANDRA FAIR

As all roads lead to Bandra starting September, here is a glimpse of the most awaited September Garden that has been an integral part Bandra Fair since the tradition started many years ago. You know Bandra Fair has begun when you get the aroma of freshly prepared chana & you hear squeals of delight as the giant ferry wheel picks up momentum. This year the September Garden was inaugurated by cutting the ribbon at the main gate by two of our very own priests, Fr Alvaro Nazareth who celebrates 60 years of his ordination anniversary & Fr Christopher Goveas who celebrated 30 years. Despite the rain, it was heartening to see our Parishioners at the inauguration. The funds generated are being used for various charity purposes. The church uses part of the fund for running St. Aloysius Night High School, which provides education to those who work during day time & study in the evenings & for providing medical assistance to the poor. A certain part of the fund goes to

Vincent De Paul Society & also to sponsor mission centres to build churches. Over the years, with an increase in the number of pilgrims, the type of stalls too greatly increased. It is true that the large influx of pilgrims in a given venue can become a disturbance for the residents. Each year there is an attempt to find solutions to this problem. A lot of hard work goes behind the scenes & meticulous planning to procure the requisite permissions. It would be unfair on my part if I didn’t mention the following individuals who work so hard behind the scenes:Gordon D’Silva - for coordinating stalls & legal formalities & for working hard to ensure all the paperwork is in order.

Saisa Ho Toh Aisa Ushering in the Golden Jubilee year of an individual or an organization is an honour & a privilege accorded to just some chosen few. St. Anthony’s Institute Sports Academy (SAISA), located in a cul-de-sac on the northern end of Pali Village & the corner of 21st /33rd Road Bandra is one such privileged organisation. A privilege richly deserved, which no one will grudge. The Trustees used to run a rudimentary primary school, St. Anthony’s School. This school catered to the children of the villagers. SAISA emerged from humble beginnings as a rather nondescript club then named PJ’s. To assist & fund in the management of the school, few of the trustees formed PJ’s which brought together the young lads around to play sport & have fundraisers to assist the school. Incidentally, PJ’s does not stand for Pali Junction as is commonly believed. The name PJ’s was borrowed from the iconic night club in California, associated with the youth rocker of that era – Trini Lopez. The Trustees finding it difficult to run the school inducted two young spirited neighbourhood gentleman Ken Drego & Ronnie Drego to work alongside & be Trustees to manage the school. For various reasons, the primary one being the gradual mushrooming of bigger schools in the area, St. Anthony’s School was fighting a losing battle for survival. With a heavy heart, the Trustees shut it down in the year 2006 after following due processes. The Trustees then decided to launch SAISA (registered as a Charitable Organisation), by constructing a full-fledged 4 storied building (availing a Bank loan). Thus, SAISA came into being or PJ’s - in a brand-new avatar. The Club’s multifarious activities now include Badminton, Swimming, Basketball, Table Tennis, Carom, a Fitness Centre, a Celebration Hall & the ubiquitous

- Housie. SAISA also houses a restaurant appropriately named what else? PJ’s! Unfortunately, when the primary school was shut albeit reluctantly, the Collector took back the plot of land adjoining the school. This land had been put to good use by SAISA by constructing a lawn tennis court on it. This was also used to conduct some thrilling rink hockey, volleyball & tennis tournaments. The loss of the ground on a technicality was a dampener but SAISA could not let that hiccup stifle its activities. Over the years, SAISA has gone from strength to strength. Membership is open to all. No favouring any particular community. Memberships are truly flexible i.e. weekly, monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or on an annual basis. Top class coaching is provided by reputed coaches. With such an awesome pedigree, SAISA is now one of the much sought-after clubs in a burgeoning secular neighbourhood. SAISA is now in celebratory mode, the reason – it’s Golden Jubilee. This happy augury is mainly due to the three persons who have walked the talk these past 50 years - Chairperson Mrs Anandini Thakoor, Hon. Secretary Ken Drego & Trustee Ronnie Drego. Their relentless dedication has shaped the Institution SAISA. To celebrate this milestone, SAISA hosted a month of kaleidoscopic events: Tournaments in table tennis, chess, badminton, sports carnival, royal icing workshop for children, a paint party teaching, tape resist art for children. An impressive function was organised by on August 15, 2019 evening. A galaxy of down to earth celebrities like sports luminaries Padma Shree Smt Bhagyashree Thipsay, Chess Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay, Olympic Gold Medallist & former India Hockey Captain M.M. Somaya, Hockey International Diago D’Souza, ex Dy Mayor Smt Alka Kerkar,

SAISA club celebrated its Golden Jubilee on Independence Day three-term Corporator Asif Zakaria, Corporator Swapna Mhatre & the SAISA family attended to applaud & encourage this unique club. A club which has done so much for Sports in its glittering tenure of 5 decades. Chairperson & renowned Social Worker Anandani Thakoor were on hand to greet & welcome the honoured guests. Kudos to the Trustees & Managing Committee especially Mr Ken Drego who was with the club from inception & still has the indefatigable energy to go on for another 50 years. In his brief address, he was happy to mention that SAISA has since repaid its bank building loan & is now debt-free. SAISA is not all about fun & games. SAISA has been constantly doing its bit to help needy causes, especially in the areas of medical assistance. SAISA selflessly gives until its hurts! In the spirit of charity which is an ongoing contribution & commitment of SAISA, donations of Rs 50,000/- each was handed over to The St Vincent the Paul & Ravindra Joshi Medical Foundation. SAISA is also a pioneer in energy conservation. The solar panels ensure a saving of at least Rs. 30-40 lakhs a year. Thanks to a new filtration technology,

its swimming pool water needs to be changed only once in 10 years! The slick celebratory function was held at the SAISA club itself. The building was all aglow, preening like a newly dressed bride. The programme/entertainment was all in house. Normally large funds are spent in hiring professionals. SAISA showed the way, how to harness in house talent. Ms Geeta D’Souza’s entertaining tableau “Looking Back, Looking Forward” was the pièce de résistance of the evening. The sheer virtuosity of the in-house talent on display, be it singing or dancing had the appreciative audience delirious with excitement. I could spot Somaya ex-Hockey Gold Medal Olympian enjoying the lilting music. Shri Ashish Shelar was at his humorous eloquent best. In his address, he stressed the point that in his official capacity he needs to visit various clubs & gymkhanas. The one club where he always felt at home was SAISA, a club he has been visiting for over 14 years. He also offered all possible help from his side & requested SAISA to invite him for its 100-year celebrations too! Edwin Fernandes

Mosaic 2019 – More than just a Festival What is Mosaic? Traditionally speaking, the Oxford Dictionary describes it as ‘A picture or pattern produced by arranging together small pieces of stone, tile, glass, etc.’. But the Andrean inter-collegiate cultural festival is much more than just an assortment of various departmental events; it is a culmination of hard work, dedication, very long days & most of all teamwork. The combination of these indispensable values by the team that made Mosaic 2019 what it is, is truly the most accurate definition of the festival put up by St. Andrew’s College. Mosaic, a project that has been the

brainchild of a dedicated team of students debuted with the theme ‘The Take Off’. Being the first-ever festival of its kind, it did not fail to impress & flew past all expectations; its slogan ‘Udna Banta Hain’ became wildly popular amongst all those who attended the three-day extravaganza. It witnessed the ‘never give up’ attitude of the youth that participated in the event and the students that worked to make the festival possible, accurately portraying what a team of dedicated Andreans can achieve. With an amazing predecessor to look back on, Mosaic 19 promises to be bigger & better.

Mosaic 2019: Tell Your Story began with a monumental victory when thousands of people gathered for its launch at The Dublin Square at Phoenix Market City, Kurla. The event, sponsored by Tonesbox, an event company in celebration of World Music Day 2019, had well-known rappers like Naezy, Zaeden & Siddharth Slathia headlining it. Many students from St. Andrew’s College put up exceptional performances that had the massive audience up on their feet constantly while cheering the performers & chanting the Mosaic Slogan ‘Udna Banta Hain’. A successful event of that enormity only proves the amount of dedication & teamwork that is the embodiment of Andrean spirit & values. With Mosaic 2019 only days away, the volunteers have been working day & night to work for the crowd up into the Mosaic spirit. Various events have been happening

all around the college. Flash mobs, interviews, games, & many more Mosaic themed activities have been happening all around Andrew’s campus, instilling a sense of oneness and bonding amongst the fellow Andreans. The organising committee of this year’s festival presents to all its attendees, Mosaic with an additional day of fun & a lot more events than last year, Mosaic 2019 is enormous & it is bursting with excitement. St. Andrew’s college known to never disappoint its audience throughout the years with the numerous festivals they’ve put up & they don’t intend on breaking their streak. St. Andrew’s College opens its gates to you from the 16th of September to the 19th of September. Mosaic 2019, where every story is heard. Karen Pereira

MALHAR BY THE BAY What is more rejuvenating than an evening of soulful music, dance and enriching performances amidst an aesthetically pleasing view. Thus Malhar 2019, the annual intercollegiate festival of St. Xavier’s College Mumbai, to be held on the 15th, 16th, 17th of August brings to you a great opportunity to unwind your tiresome week. Malhar, under its umbrella, has been organising pre-external events as a part of the publicity activities of the festival. In the past years, Malhar at Carter’s, the external event at Carter Road Amphitheatre, Bandra, has been a trademark to showcase amateur talent. This year, with a novel idea of engaging more people, the external event of Malhar 2019 called “Malhar by the Bay’’ held on the 10th of August 2019, was truly a bigger and a better treat. With the event taking place at the Bandra Fort Amphitheatre, the ambience offered a breathtaking view of the Bandstand. The large seating capacity attracted a massive crowd which was a real breakthrough from the city’s chaotic environment. The main purpose of this

evening was to promote Malhar among the diverse crowd and displayed the intricate talent of Xavierites. With performances wide-ranging from Indian and Western Band events, to solo classical and contemporary music to dance routines to freestyle and rap, the audience was mesmerized by such a plethora of talent. The crowd completely resonated with the event, there with a session of open mics that was a call to all the budding artists in the city. The event is followed by the Malhar festival in the following week on the 15th, 16th and 17th of August. The three-day festival involves Malhar Conclave on the first day i.e. 15th August, which is a forum of interaction between esteemed speakers and students. This year, we have a stellar lineup that hosts Ms Arundhati Katju and Mr Mark Tully as a part of the keynote sessions. Malhar conclave 2019 also hosts a panel discussion on women in sports and the crucial issue of the water crisis. Day 2 and Day 3 are a soulful engagement of events ranging from performing arts to literary arts and fine arts.

Xavierites perform at the Bandra Fort Amphitheatre This year, to add to the vibrant turn of events, we have the Malhar Concert on the 16th of August that will witnesses Kaam Bhaari, Slow Cheeta and Spitfire enthral the audience. The last day, 17th August involves a movie screening of ‘Newton’ graced by Anupama Chopra. All in all, Malhar 2019 is an enriching escapade of three wonderful days. Eshaan Kably

I remember as a child, my mom would buy the cane from the Bandra fair as a disciplinary measure for bad behaviour. I enjoyed the laughing mirrors, the well of death & buying the soapy bubbles to play with. I recall the nuns at the canteen that sold yummy sorpotel with sannas, which were the highlights of my time as a child. I remember decking up in my Sunday best clothes & climbing the steps to go for mass all decked up followed by veneration. Fr. Reuben Tellis, Parish Priest of Mount Carmel Church, recollects his time at the Mount over the years. “As a child, my parents would bring my brother & me to the Basilica for the veneration of the image of our Lady of the Mount. After the veneration, we did the customary walk down the fair. As a youth, I used to join the parish walking

pilgrimage to the Mount, praying the Rosary & it was quite an experience to walk together with a few hundreds of parishioners from Santa Cruz. As a seminarian, I participated in the walking pilgrimage to the Mount from Goregaon starting at 3 am on the Wednesday of the Octave. After freshening up, we would have mass con-celebrated by the seminary priests & I would be part of the choir. I walked every year of my seminary studies. As joint director of the youth, I was part of the committee helping with the arrangements at the Mount & now, I celebrate masses & sit for confessions.” Many people Bandra Fair has lost its charm but I say Bandra Fair is not just another event, its an emotion we as Catholics look forward to each year. Bandra Fair Memories It’s that time of year again folks, when Bandra is centre-stage - so grab your cotton candy & get ready to make some memories. For those of you who don’t know, the Bandra Fair is a week-long festivity held in the Bandra suburbs to commemorate the Feast of the Nativity of the blessed Mother Mary. Come rain or shine, the 300-year-old tradition will commence on the first Sunday following 8th September & continue for at least 8 days. For all you natives, expect to see the usual amusement rides, street events, shopping & food stalls. For years, the fair attracts thousands of Christians, as well as those of other faiths. So expect the streets to be crowded. One of my oldest memories is going to the famous fair with my family, walking hand-in-hand - with my mother on one side and my sister on the other.

While in a short distance, I could see my father bonding over a few anecdotes with my two brothers. Experiencing the fair for the first time was nothing short of bliss. Together we went on our favourite rides: the different giant wheels & the rocking boat. We would then feast on some succulent street food like tandoori chicken, sorpotel, fugias, sannas, croquettes, patties, potato chops, seekh kebabs & baida roti. And then, topping it all off with some ice cream, cotton candy, boodi ke bal, & kadio bodio. Here’s a fun snippet, keeping up with a legend, that the fair started when natives found a statue of Mother Mary floating in the Arabian Sea. If you don’t see me on the giant wheel, you can find me at Mount Mary Church, for Mass. See you soon. May God bless you all. Ryan Rodrigues

Replenishing the Dying Soul of Hockey Bandra, The Queen of Suburbs, has everything to offer from busy streets to calm seaside promenades, from high rise towers reaching for the skies to exquisite Portuguese style bungalows. This quite but resplendent suburb is also home to Hockey. Bandra breathes hockey, loves it, cherishes and has adopted hockey into its cultural activity. Most tournaments in the Mumbai are held in Bandra, it has produced most international players from Mumbai. Keeping this passion running hot in the veins of Bandra and Mumbai is a club established to promote sports and fitness known as “United Bandra Sports Club” also called United Bandra. Established in 2014 by Imran Khan, Abdul Kadir Shaikh and Saad Patanwala who themselves are well known hockey players and have represented in many Open, University, State and National level tournaments. The club has been thriving and reaching milestones after milestones to promote hockey and other sports. In Fall of 2014 United Bandra debuted the local sports scene competing in the Wenden Caterers Bandra Hockey Tournament and wining the 1st place which was followed by a 1st position win in 2014 Celebrate Bandra Hockey Tourna-

ment also. In 2015 United Bandra again won the 2015 Wenden Caterers Bandra Hockey Tournament, it competed in all the local tournaments and displayed marvellous quality of hockey. Needless to say, United Bandra has made a special place in the hearts of sports enthusiast and hockey lovers in Bandra and around the city as well. An appreciable number of enthusiasts are always seen attending and cheering for the games United Bandra participates in. In 2018 United Bandra competed in the Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd.’s League in the 2nd Division and was right

away promoted to the 1st Division for its champion performance. This year United Bandra participated in 2018/19 Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd.’s League and reached the Final’s beating well-established teams like Reserve Bank of India, Guru Nanak Hockey Academy, Hockey Astrengugn and Greater Mumbai Police which consisted of players who have represented India on International Level. Eventually, the team came runners’ up and was promoted to Senior Division Hockey. This by far is one of the rarest events where a team has risen so fast, this is one of the greatest achieve-

ments of the club. This itself explains the quality of hockey United Bandra has to offer. “As a hockey player, I must replenish the dying soul of Indian hockey and to this, I give monumental importance, I love this game by the whole of my heart” say’s Abdul Kadir. The United Bandra hockey team consist of mostly working-class players but to add the strength are players as young as 15 years old and college students. There is no age barrier for sports. All one needs is the right motivation and determination to play. The aim is to promote good sportsmen and help them excel in sports and fitness. Some players who’ve started with united Bandra are now playing the Super League Division of Hockey which is the highest level in the country and are participated by players who represent India on an international platform. The sports club is itself has players who are Nationally Certified Fitness Trainers and Coaches of state-level teams. This explains the crude potential for club to promote sports fitness and healthy living. Soon the club is going to start its football team and will organize sports and fitness camps for children and train children in athletics. Abdul Kadir

Bandra Gets A New Jewel For Her Crown Over the last few years, Bandra has been transformed into a cultural destination for Mumbai. The coexistence of old-world charm, architectural delights, street art, food stalls, trendy café’s & hip boutiques has lent itself to its popularity. For residents and visitors alike, Bandra offers an experience for everyone. Coming soon to the heart of Bandra is Shades of India, a lifestyle brand with an international reputation and iconic shops in Delhi-NCR. Mandeep Nagi, Creative Director, says “We have chosen a location on Waterfield Road, in an exciting part of the city. We will transform it into a beautiful contemporary shop and a Zen garden in front”. The shop has been imagined as a minimalist space with large French windows, and inside it, an open lift for the mezzanine floor, as sometimes seen in European stores. Founded in the early ’90s & currently led by Mandeep Nagi and David Housego (Chairman), the brand uses textiles imaginatively and has come to be known for their passion and unique approach

to textiles over the last 20 years. As the newest jewel in Bandra’s crown, Shades of India will offer seasonal collections for apparel, textile jewellery, bags, and soft furnishings for the home. Shades of India has received international acclaim as one of India’s most creative textile companies. Its design vocabulary is a quintessentially, contemporary but inspired by the workmanship of traditional crafts. The company has won various awards at major international trade shows including the best product awards at shows in Paris & New York. Mandeep Nagi has thrice won the Elle Decor Design Award in India for fabric. IT’S TIME TO FLY Dear Reader, September always bring bountiful blessings to us, with results seen some months later. Bandra being the social hub of Mumbai, hectic activities are abundant in quantity – and an air of urgency is apparent all around. The heavy rains are no match for the enthusiasm of those on the move. It’s AGM time – and last minute preparations for power point presentations, account auditing, arrangements at the venue, etc. are on the minds of all those involved. If elections are being held, the interaction is even greater. All in all, this is promotion time. And… with the Assembly Elections around the corner, gifts are given freely – to create a ‘feel good’ effect, to help garner precious votes.

The festive season has started and people are looking forward to a lot of cheer – with food and beverages to create community connect, across all faiths. Bandra’s shopping spots – Hill Road, Linking Road and most food outlets are doing brisk business. Your favourite neighbourhood newspaper, Bandra Buzz; has always been with you, every step of the way. We are nearing our ninth year. We warn, inform, preview & review multiple categories of local news – for you to use. In the coming months, our readers will be part of an extended family, that partner for progress. Hold on to your seats, it’s time to fly! You will receive much more than you give. Your choices will increase, in many ways. You will be empowered to enrich other.

Your horizon will widen – across various verticals. It’s a win-win situation. Till next time, take care.

Stanislites of ‘Class 1980’ bond at Bandra Gym The interactions were infectious enough to activate even hard-core introverts.

The camaraderie at the Bandra Gym, as some classmates from the ‘Stanislaus Class of 1980’ met after decades was a sight to see – as they reminisced their school days. Some, had not meet after they finished school 40 years ago. In moments, they were kids again, talking about past experiences with their teachers & friends, in their younger years. How they cleverly escaped being punished by the School Principal – even after bunking class & going for a romantic movie with girls from St. Joseph’s, had interesting details. The naughty pranks at class: copying at tests, the fist fights, superbly imitating past teachers and masters, etc.; were the topics of most conversations. All interactions were infectious enough to activate even hard-core introverts. This re-union was filled with memories of yesteryear & how everyone has changed, yet still children at heart. Everyone wanted to know what their school friends were doing now, where they stayed & a hundred & one other questions. Many had come from other global locations, just to meet up. The 4 hours of interaction were not enough. This grand re-union was organised also to plan the greater event of ‘Bond of Boys’ 2020 - a yearly event held by St. Stanislaus Ex-Students Association on 4th January’20. Also, this coincided with Fr. Luke Rodrigues’s birthday, along with two others birthday boys: Eustace Mendonca - who specially flew from Dubai and Linus Farias - from USA. The boy’s on the spot decided a ‘Fundraiser’, for the Health Welfare of the St. Stanislaus High School teachers. A sum of Rs.100,000/- was collected & given to Principal Mrs. Anna Coreea and Fr Dr. Frazer Mascarenhas, S.J. - for their dear alma mater.

Troy Almeida, Fr. Luke Rodrigues SJ, Deacon Naveen, Eustace Mendonca, Linus Farias, Dr Abhay Bhave, Adv. Troy is a ‘Son Of The Soil’, an East Indian & member of the BEIA. The Bombay East Indian Association was established on 26th May 1887, to advance the education, employment, duties, rights & economic backwardness of the East Indians. Dr. P. F Gomes was the first President in 1887. He was knighted by Pope Leo XIII in 1888. Mr. J. L. Britto was the first Secretary. The other great East Indian founding fathers were Mr. D. I. D’Monte, Mr. John Bocarro, Mr. Dominic F. Almeida, Mr. S. J. Abreo, Mr. P. A. Chaves, Mr. L. M. Valladares, Mr. Gabriel D’ Aguair, Mr. John D’Mello & Dr. D. Cardoz. Rev.

D. G. Almeida donated Rs. 100,000 towards an Education Fund. The Almeida family along with D’Monte and other East Indian families had one objective in mind - a vision of the future 132 years back for the welfare of East Indian communities all over Mumbai. Today we are proud of our great East Indian heritage.( https:// www.east-indians.com/beia.html) Just before the delicious dinner, Fr. Luke prayed & towards the end, all solemnly sang the School Anthem: ‘With Grateful Hearts’. Then all sang ‘Happy Birthday’, as it was Fr. Luke’s birthday. Many group photographs were clicked for posterity – even as all left with a heavy heart – yet happy to have had the joy of this platform for meeting up with long lost school friends. Truly, memories are made of this. Jonathan D’Silva

BANDRA BUZZ | SEPTEMBER 2019

The People’s President Dr Cheryl Misquitta believes in all things good & the Universe conspiring to help you achieve that goodness. Her empathy for the suffering & the need to alleviate pain has been the force behind her becoming a doctor. Born to East Indian parents, she has been indoctrinated with Christian values since birth & owes much to her alma mater – St. Joseph’s High School, Bandra. On completing her MBBS degree from Pravara Medical College, Loni, Maharashtra; she went on to qualify in 1982, to be a doctor, with a specialization in Aviation Medicine. After a short stint at Holy Family Hospital, Bandra, she joined Air India in 1986 & managed the Medical Clinic at Mumbai Airport, for Air India employees. During her time in Air India till 2006, she also did her further specialization in Aviation Medicine at Bangalore & was empanelled with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation as a Certified Medical Officer for Certifying Pilots & Airline Crew. A feather in Cheryl’s cap has been her accomplishment in setting up the entire medical department for Go-Air Airline, according to DGCA Guidelines. This was

a mammoth task, involving pre-flight training of cabin crew, lesson plans, the structure of the first-aid manual, etc. – all in her post as Chief Medical Officer. The enormity of heading the complete medical department & her achievement of the task is one of her proudest moments. In 2009, Dr Cheryl set up her private practice in Bandra West. She is also on the panel of DGCA doctors & associated with the Medical Centres at St. Peter’s Church & Mt. Carmel Church, Bandra – for the underprivileged & economically backward sectors of society. Since 2015, Dr Cheryl has served on the Managing Committee of the Bandra Gymkhana as the Jt. Hon. Social Secretary – directing all the social events of the gymkhana. Since 2017, she was elected to be the President of this 82 years old institution – and has always been the ‘friendly-face’ of powers-thatbe, here. Outspoken, yet humble; she has presided over recent general body meetings fairly & always seen that truth prevails. Post EGM, Dr Cheryl has been responsible for the new-found ‘Freedom From Fear’, that every member is now enjoying – like a breath of fresh air. This has made her a very popular President of the Gym. Now, she is at the threshold of her next 2 year term, fondly known as the “People’s President”, standing for Bandra Gym elections - President: 2019 - 21.

GPON is an access method that provides fibre connectivity (currently the fastest fixed line medium) using point-to-multipoint technology. Its defining feature is that it uses passive splitters in the fibre network so that a single fibre line from the service provider can deliver connectivity to multiple premises. Whereas an active Ethernet network uses physical, electrically powered switches that open and close to send signals to different premises, GPON does not rely on electrically powered switches.
