PALI MARKET REDEVELOPMENT FOR THE BETTER OR WORSE?

Debatable opinions have been raised over the redevelopment of the Pali Municipal Market. Vendors said they have not been paid pending dues by the builder, they also fear cancellation of licenses & non-allotment of gala space in the new building. More than 60 vendors consisting of fruit, vegetable, fish & meat sellers who are currently sitting along the roadside at Pali market will be shifted to the new building which is being redeveloped by Manthan developers. The vendors will be shifted to the first floor where there will be a bank below & a commercial real estate development above along with a municipal hall & parking space in the middle floors. The Pali Hill Residents’ Association revealed the new building does not have adequate ventilation. Also, the gala space has been reduced & galas are being sold illegally to certain vendors. On the other hand, the Pali Market Shopkeepers’ Association & BMC are pushing for the redevelopment as soon as possible to clear congestion caused by illegal vendors who are currently sitting outside the building on the street.

More than 60 vendors will be shifted to the new Pali Municipal Market building Asif Zakaria, Municipal Councillor of ward no. 101, said, “The market belongs to the BMC. The redevelopment of the market was delayed by Manthan developers time & again. BMC has now informed the developer to finish the work & open the market

so that all vendors can be shifted inside the new building & the road will be cleared for smooth movement. We are awaiting O.C. following which we will shift vendors hopefully by the end of December.” Vendors said they have not been paid

due rent by the developer since the last 2 years. Vendors do not want to shift unless they are paid their due rent. A vendor on request of anonymity said, “The builder who is now redeveloping the new market has not paid our due rent for the last two years. Once we shift inside, the builder might no longer be liable to pay rent as we will then fall directly under the BMC jurisdiction inside the municipal market. We want the builder to clear our pending dues before we are made to shift.” In addition, the vendor revealed, “Out of 60 vendors, only 10 to 11 are legal with proper licenses in their name. Most of us do not have a license or, in some cases the license belongs to some other owner who has rented out a particular vendor. What will happen to those vendors who do not have a license? Will we be given a gala space inside the new market building? Will the BMC issue us a new license or do we have to pay a monthly rent to the BMC?” Ronald Rodrigues Pic: Josh Photography Continued on Page 2 >>

Tata Power sets up Bandra’s first electric vehicle charging station In order to help charge electric vehicles, an electric vehicle fast charging point has been recently installed at Bandra. Now, for the first time, people using electric vehicles can charge their vehicles at this charging point for free till December-end. Inaugurated by Tarun Kapoor, IAS, Secretary, MoP&NG, Govt of India, Tata Power successfully installed the first fast DC changer in at Kini’s Causeway. The charging point has been installed by Indian Oil Corporation Limited & Tata Power to ease the burden of charging vehicles for users. Using this fast charging point, vehicles can be charged from 0 to 100 per cent battery power in 60 minutes. Electric vehicle users need to download Tata Power EZ Charge Android app where they can scan the RFID tag, select the required options & plug-in the charger. Anish Kanakia, owner of the petrol pump, said, “It is a fast charging point so vehicles can be charged from 0 to 100 per cent battery power within an hour. It depends on each vehicle as there are different types of

November 24, 2020. It is the first electric vehicle charging station at a petrol pump in Bandra. Kanakia said, “People can come in with their vehicles anytime & charge their electric vehicles at this charging point as it is 24x7 functional petrol pump.” Though electric vehicles are a bit uncommon there are some people who are shifting to electric vehicles. Kanakia said, “Charging electric vehicles is a major issue faced by electric vehicle users. Portable chargers are the way forward in the future where users can carry portable chargers and charge their vehicles anywhere when the battery drains out. For now, these charging points will help keep the electric vehicles running and resolve issues faced by its users especially during a long distance trip.” Indian Oil is leading the way in providing clean energy facilities to India. Pali Market redevelopment for the better or worse? Some of these vendors have been selling fruits, vegetables, fish & meat for the last 30 years at Pali Market. A vendor said, “I have been selling vegetables at Pali Market along the roadside since the last 38 years. I do not have a license but, I have been paying monthly rent to the BMC along with bribes or hafta to the police, municipal officers & other authorities. Where will I go if only licensed vendors are allowed to shift inside the new market building? How will I support my family?” Madhu Poplai, Secretary of Pali Hill Residents’ Association said, “The new Pali Municipal Market is being redeveloped in a haphazard manner. I have visited the site, there is no ventilation for the vendors. The space between two opposite galas has been reduced to six feet which may lead to congestion. The galas are being rented out based on favouritism where some shopkeepers are given preference who are then renting the galas to small-time vendors. We are not against the market but we want the municipal market to be redeveloped in a legal & adequate manner.” Dinesh Gupta, secretary of Pali Market Shopkeepers’ Association said, “There are a total of 62 vendors who are willing to shift to the new building. We were hesitant to shift because the builder has not paid

due rent for the last two years. But the BMC is hell bound on shifting all vendors inside the new market building in order to clear congestion on the outside road.” Despite repeated attempts, Abhijeet Rane, promoter of Manthan Developers, was not available for a comment. Pic: Josh Photography

Don’t give up; fight & start your life again for you are beautiful within: Daulat Bi Khan “I am not a victim, I am a survivor,” says Daulat Bi Khan, an independent woman who fought her way for 10 years after an acid attack in 2010 finally to start a platform to help 52 other survivors. Overcoming rejection & disapproval post the acid attack, Daulat Bi Khan, has now started her own Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Acid Survivors Saahas Foundation, to help those who have faced acid attacks. Daulat Bi Khan works to help survivors with their medical surgeries, supports them to earn a livelihood, boost their self-esteem & survive with dignity. Daulat says, “Even if we have faced an acid attack, our life does not and should not stop. Even though a part of our body is disfigured, we can still work. We can use our skills and effort to earn a living for ourselves, become financially independent instead of depending on others.” Daulat faced an acid attack in 2010 by her own family members. She says, “I can never forget the day when my elder sister & her husband threw acid on me. It still haunts me. I had to undergo 17 surgeries because my face was disfigured & many exposed parts of my body were burnt.” I went from pillar to post from municipal, government to private hospitals, from small-time doctors to expert surgeons. She says, “I was scared & in miserable pain after the attack. Blood would ooze out of my skin for days like a fountain. I had to undergo treatment in government hospitals because I could not afford the cost of surgery at private hospitals.” My facial skin was hanging and the doctors at government hospitals would pull my skin to clean it with vinegar. They would keep me naked wrapped in a sheet after a shower at 4 am when the doctor would come for a regular round check-up at 3 pm. The doctor would pull pieces of my skin when they would remove the sheet. I decided never to undergo treatment in a government hospital.” After staying in bed for six months and losing around 30 kgs, Daulat was motivated by her elder daughter to stand up in life and fight for her survival. Daulat says, “My eldest daughter inspired me to stand up again and fight for myself and my family. She told me that I should think of myself as a beautiful

Daulat started ‘All in One Mini Super Market’ at Bazar Road in Bandra where acid survivors work as employees in the store human. She gave me the courage to start my life all over again.” Daulat used to work as a makeup artist before the attack. Daulat said, “When I started approaching the makeup company to get my job back, I was shunned off. The makeup company told me that they beautify other people and need only beautiful and good looking people to work. I felt disheartened but then, I started looking for other jobs because I wanted to earn my own living, feed my children and also save money for my surgeries.” Many people would shut the door on my face. Daulat says, “Many people slammed their door on my face. They were not ready to give me any kind of employment. But I did not stop hunting for work. Finally, I started my own foundation in 2016, to help acid survivors like me.” Through Saahas Foundation, Daulat aims to empower acid survivors, help them find a job, and get medical treatment for their surgeries. Daulat says, “Many acid attack survivors are treated as untouchables post

the attack. They lose their entire self-esteem. I want to do my bit to help these survivors restart their life, gain a job so that they can sustain, feed themselves and their family. Also, acid survivors need to undergo several surgeries and need financial aid. How are they supposed to raise the money if they are not given jobs?” Daulat has started ‘All in One Mini Super Market’ at Bazar Road, Bandra west to raise money where acid survivors work as employees in the store. Daulat said, “We do not believe in charity and living at the mercy of anyone. We want to empower ourselves and be self-sustainable. Having a job and earning money is extremely important for us. This is my small effort to help those who have survived.” In addition, Daulat has started a crowdfunding initiative https://bit.ly/34lfrLn to help other survivors. Daulat said, “For an acid survivor, money is the primary need especially for surgeries. Then we need a change of mindset where people offer jobs to survivors, treat them as individuals and give them a chance to earn their livelihood.” Acid should not be easily sold in the market. A miniscule quantity of cheap acid can disrupt the entire life of a person. The laws and police action should be stringent where acid survivors are taken care by the government and the accused are punished. NGOs should not be pretentious but literally work at the ground level to help victims. And survivors should not think of themselves as weak humans but stand up and start their life again. We all have a

right to life and nobody can snatch it away from us. It is not going to be easy but it is important and worth it. Recently, the Maharashtra state cabinet approved a draft bill to curb heinous crimes against women and children in the state. Under the bill, acid attack will be made a nonbailable offence with imprisonment not less than 10 years, but which may be extended to natural life with fine to be payable to the victim or with death with heinous offences. The fine would be levied up to Rs 10 lakh to help the victim with plastic surgery and face reconstruction. The draft bill includes provisions such as completing probe in a case within 15 days and trial within 30 days. It proposes stringent punishment including death penalty and heavy fines for the culprits. Special police teams and separate courts will be set up for investigation and trial of cases against women and children. The perpetrators if found guilty will be punished with imprisonment for life for not less than ten years but may extend to the remainder of natural life or with death in cases which have characteristics of being heinous in nature. The draft bill once passed by the state legislature will be called the “Shakti Act”. The draft bill will be tabled in the state legislature during the winter session, which began in Mumbai from December 14. After getting the house nod, the bill will be sent to the central government for approval and Presidential assent. Ronald Rodrigues Pic: Josh Photography

Carmelites SC: 50 years of one of the most successful sports club in Bandra With a legacy of 5 decades, the Carmelites Sports Club has earned quite a few accolades, with the passage of time. The most notable amongst them, the Nadkarni Cup victory in the year 1990. The club’s founding father, Mr. Joe Pereira, also lovingly referred to as uncle Joe, was and continues to be a source of inspiration for the current management. As stated by Mr. Eudes Kinny, who has been the team’s manager for the past 26 years. The sports club had a slow and steady evolution, founded in the year 1970, initially, the team solely comprised of players who resided in Carmel Co-operative Housing Society, Bandra. As they fledged, the club expanded their reach and eventually started recruiting players from all over Bandra. And eventually attracted players, not only from all the corners of the country but also trained talent from international hubs such as Nigeria, England & Italy. Currently basking in the fame of competing in the 1st division category of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League, their journey has been one of twists and turns, of defeats and thereafter relentlessly training to overcome challenges in order to get back on the pedestal. An inspiring figure who must be given an honourable mention is coach Eudes, who is undeniably credited with rejuvenating the club’s morale when it was looming in nadir. Given the fact the plummeted soon after reaching the pinnacle of the Nadkarni Championship. This was due to the disintegration of the team, owing to factors such as some players had to dedicate time to building a career, while some progressed to playing professionally. None the less under the guidance of coach Kinny the reformed & rebuilt a team from scratch & once again traversed from the ground up. Post, 1994 the club only participated in local tournaments & worked their way up to their current standing all over again. Rising akin to a Phoenix the club boasts of having trained players who have played for distinctive teams such as Air India,

Mumbai FC, Dena Bank & ONGC. The club has also played a crucial role in nurturing the talented Henry Picardo, who is the only Bandrite to have represented India in Football & later managed Mumbai FC in the prestigious I-League; Walter Pereira ex-FIFA referee & Altaf Mansoori who represented Junior India now represents Reserved Bank of India. Staying true to their motto, “Harness Raw Talent into Future Prospects” the club continues to inspire and support young talent such as Manuel D’souza former Maharashtra Under-15 and former Captain Mumbai FC Under-19, Rohail Shaikh who played for Maharashtra, Sheldon Raghvan former ONGC and currently with Ozone FC Bengaluru (I-League 2nd Division), Azzar Noorani former Under-20 Mumbai FC player (I-League) & currently with Team Air India and Denzil Mascarenhas, currently with Team Dena Bank. Another important and commendable shift that has occurred due to the club’s perseverance, is the sanguine perspective parents share with regards to their child’s future as a professional sportsman. The team trains thrice a week at Dr Norman Lewis (Supari Talao) ground and aim to break into the Super-Division category. The best testimonies of the club’s impact on the lives of the players can be chronicled through the quotes by some of their players, Smit Devkar, 22 years, who has been with the club for the past 6 years states “The club’s ex-members still come to train & interact, which gives us great exposure & also inspires us to go the extra mile.” However, Jenish Satra, who has been with the club for the past 14 years sums it all up perfectly “The club, coach Kinny and all the players are like an extension of my family, and I have gathered great memories during my time here.” Sidhant Nayangara

Tête-à-tête with Tanaz Mohammed Bandra’s only female Premier Skills Coach Educator

Tanaz is a Grassroots Development Officer with ISL giants, Mumbai City FC Being a female athlete in India comes with a lot of challenges; the environment, state of infrastructure, equipment, lack of female coaches, no foreseeable future in the sport and most importantly, our society’s patriarchal mindset. For years now, many top athletes have given up promising careers to support their families at home or join a corporate that would help them become independent, while some others who would still want to somehow pursue the sport would join government jobs that had sports teams in alien towns away from their families, not to mention the discrimination they would face for being a woman. Having faced all of these challenges and much more, Tanaz Mohammed took this as an opportunity rather than a challenge. Having been an avid sportsperson since her childhood, she was not willing to let go of the sports in her blood. She pursued her first love hockey until 2016 when she played the Senior Nationals at Bangalore representing Maharashtra and prior to that, was even part of the initial pool for the junior Indian hockey team in 2013. In fact, she was even offered a job with the Railways on the basis of her merits but decided against it since she had to set base in some faraway part of the country. “When I started coaching football, I couldn’t find a girl who was in the game professionally. Most of the time there is parental pressure & girls are forced to focus on their academics for the lack of options professionally,” exclaims Tanaz, who is now a Grassroots Development Officer with ISL giants, Mumbai City FC as well as a Premier Skills Coach Educator. At the age of 7, she surprised her parents when she told them she wanted to take part in a road running race. The then very shy & reserved girl has come a long way since, now training football coaches & even giving lectures & guiding management students about careers in sports. So much so she was even felicitated

for her work by People Who Usually Don’t Lecture - an event where she was invited to speak on her journey in August last year. But the journey for her has been nothing short of enthralling. At the age of nine, Tanaz started playing hockey - a game no one in her family had ever played before (her father played cricket) – with her school team. Over the years, Tanaz created a name for herself representing & captaining her school, the Mumbai district, the Maharashtra state & even took part in international tournaments the world over. After completing her graduation, Tanaz continued to dabble with sports taking coaching assignments as & when they came & also played local tournaments. She even worked in a corporate setting for 3 months but sooner than later decided that it wasn’t her cup of tea. Things changed for the better when she appeared for & cleared the entrance exam for her PG in Sports Management, which she completed as the Gold Medallist & also the Student of the Year in her batch post which her career in football began. Until then, her contribution to football was limited to representing the school & college in district level tournaments. “I joined Mumbai City FC as an assistant coach for 2 months but they were really impressed and soon I was the Grassroots Coordinator. I’m guessing I did well because last year I was promoted as the Grassroots Development Officer for this massive club!” Her first assignment was where she decided to get her hands dirty. “When I went to conduct a summer camp in Madanpura back in 2017, I had received an astounding 1200 registrations but on closer inspection, I realised that there was not a single girl! I spoke to a parent & found out that they don’t have the equipment & felt uncomfortable without a female coach. I told that parent to inform the rest that I would be there myself to train their daughters. I was pleasantly surprised the next day when

Tanaz teaches underprivileged children of Bandra Reclamation to play football around 500 girls turned up to play football, some in football gear & others in their hijabs, my point being that the boundaries are existing only in your head. As a woman, you must push those boundaries & set your inhibitions free.” So much so many of the girls’ mothers were overwhelmed & approached her to conduct a training for them as well. “I was so happy to be able to create a spark & encourage women to do their best & conquer their inhibitions. In fact, to date, I get goosebumps when I think of the time one of the girl’s father approached & thanked me & said he never imagined something like this could happen!” “But the larger impact was that most of the girls started representing their school football teams,” beams a satisfied Tanaz. It’s hard work & sheer dedication that has taken her to where she is. She kept upgrading her skillset & attended Premier Skills – a joint initiative by the Premier League & British Council that empowers Grassroots Coaches to help young people to improve their lives through football first as a student in 2017. Today she is the only female Premier Skills Head Coach Educator in the country all thanks to her desire to improve the football landscape for women in the country. In fact, she got a positive surprise on Women’s Day last month when Premier League India featured her on their website. Tanaz has since mentored hundreds of football coaches over the country and is hungry to do more. I want to create an atmosphere where girls come out and play the sport and

thus feel empowered. I also want to educate parents because parents are their children’s first teachers and more often than not pressurise their children to do what they feel should be done rather than allow their children to explore their options. It’s really fulfilling to see when a child gets happy and wants to come back the next day again to training. That’s the main purpose - for children to start loving the game at that age and not to win. Most coaches go wrong there and at the end of the day the child goes home disappointed.” But when she’s not on the field, Tanaz likes to try her hand at something new and the current lockdown has given her ample time to cook, do some nail art and spend some more time with her family at home. Her mother jokes, “I thought my daughter would be a doctor or a Chartered Accountant, she excelled at her studies but here she is breaking bones on the field instead of mending them in a clinic!” She shares a bit of advice, “For all the women out there, take every challenge as an opportunity & break the glass ceiling because, for you, the sky is the limit!” Valerian D’Costa

BANDRA BUZZ | DECEMBER 2020

Mark Dharmai spells guts & glory In my esteem, he stands over 10 feet tall. Mark Dharmai, the para-athlete world champion level badminton player, proves his motto all right: from the impossible to the possible. Embracing every opportunity that life throws his way, he is the epitome of positivity. A meeting with him motivates you to strive for the best, as he has. It’s his determination that has taken him the world over, from Germany to Canada, to the Asian Games & other tournaments, fiercely wielding that badminton racket & coming up trumps. The accolades include a countless number of medals about which he says modestly, “I don’t count them… But each medal reminds me of the training & the hard work that went into winning it.” What drives him is “the challenge of doing something. If there’s something I can do, I want to do it. I want to make people aware that we (dwarfs) exist & we can do it.” And the human motivating force behind him since childhood has been his mother who took a lot of care of him “and motivated me when I wanted to get into sports. From there on, I started pushing myself.” Mrs. Dharmai’s advice to her son was, “Just keep playing & do whatever your heart wants to. Don’t give up. You may fall the first, second & third time but the fourth time people will appreciate you.” Mark has also been blessed with a strong support system by the way of close friends from Chimbai, where he lives. “They are my childhood friends who have supported me in good & bad times. If not for a strong support system, it would have been very difficult.” But keeping the blessings all to himself is the last thing Mark wants! He’s constantly on the lookout for people to train & has put many para-athletes on the map, with his dedication. Like the three-feet tall Bina Gandhi who he’s training in shot put for the Dwarf Olympics in 2022, to be held in Germany… and the badminton players Ruhi Shingade and Suresh Sutar. Where does his professional inspiration come from? “It’s from my life coach

Nawal Seth, who’s very encouraging to dispel negativity & show us the way forward. I travel to Lucknow where my coach has a base camp for para-athletes & at times, he sends us to Bangalore, where we play with able bodies. It’s very different playing with them – you learn from your mistakes & it’s more of a challenge. Being informed by our coach that we are on world level tournaments, they respect us & share a lot with us. Ever since I got a membership for Bandra Gym as well, a lot of the members have helped me improve my game. I also travel to camps in Haryana & Chandigarh.” He is also strong about – country first – when it comes to representing India. “It makes me proud & gives me a lot of courage. You have to respect the country you come from.” He admits that he has received support at the state level too & now knows how the system works. “Considering the struggle I went through, I don’t want others to go through the same. I do as much as I can in my capacity to help someone else.” Does he have an eye on the Dwarf Olympics 2022 to be held in Germany? He enthuses, “Yes, I have to go! But only if I get sponsors…The govt. supports some tournaments but where Germany is concerned, we have to go on our own. My life coach, Mr. Nawal Seth, will explain how to go about things & Dr. Cheryl D’Souza the dentist is also guiding me. The badminton player Disha Pandya also supports us.” But as always, he is thinking bigger & out of the box since he wants to take along at least 25 athletes! He’s not sure of generating the funds right now & admits, “I know this is very challenging but let’s see. I really want to make people aware that there are people like us… You do find life partners when you go there as well. Around 600800 athletes attend these tournaments & you get to make good friends too.” Language, for him, is not a stumbling block on an international level. “Since I was born & brought up in Bandra, thankfully, English is no problem. A lot of people have difficulty speaking the language.

When I went abroad for the first time there was this impression that I am from India so I can’t speak English. But they were surprised when I went up & had a conversation with people!” His ultimate goal is to have his own academy where others like him can play the sports they like & motivate others. “People are aware of able sports persons but they don’t know much about us.” So Mark tries to create awareness wherever he goes & reaches out to them. “There are schemes for them to get help – like my bike (it’s a modified three-wheeler) is from a govt. scheme. There are also other schemes like a quota for government jobs, bank schemes, senior citizen schemes.” Tough beginnings, like the bullying in school, etc., didn’t get him down for long. “But you can’t be negative. You have to get

out of that space.” Again, it was his mother who pushed him with. “the world is not going to feed you, I am feeding you.” So he always remains positive despite the fact that, “You have to climb that ladder one step at a time & that is difficult.” But he did it & reiterates “I always have that support – be it from my family, godparents, friends or even the religious-like priests. It was a great challenge but I took it up & succeeded… My biggest support comes from God Almighty & prayers. I want people to know that if I could do it, they can too.” When you think of celebrating life, truly, Mark comes to mind! We hope he gets all the support he needs to champion the cause of para-athletes like him… Virginia Vacha Pic Credit: Jordana Quadros

The iconic Nürburg, a classic 230SL and 190SL headline the Mercedes-Benz Classic Car Rally 2020 in Bandra

Shri Anil Deshmukh & Santosh Iyer of Mercedes-Benz India, flagging off the rally Since making its debut in the year 2014 the Mercedes-Benz Classic Car Rally (MBCCR) has been a much-awaited event for the car collector community. The fanfare and reverence that the rally enjoys is not limited to our city or state but spans the length and breadth of India, it has indeed grown into the country’s premier classic car show over the period of time. Enthusiastic participants look forward to the event since it is a great avenue to view cars that truly exude the spirit of resilience and innovation. The rally which has become a winter tradition in the city commenced from Taj Lands End hotel on the 13th of December. Comprising of 40 cars, participants drove in a convoy over the Bandra-Worli Sea Link from Taj Lands End to Worli Dairy & back, and the sight of these ‘rolling museums on wheels’ attracted, as always, a lot of attention from onlookers. This year’s event paid homage to the spirit of resilience, and also felicitated women police officers of Mum-

bai who are among the people who have kept Mumbai ticking since March. Maharashtra Home Minister Shri Anil Deshmukh, who was the chief guest at the event, said, “For the last nine to ten months, we have all been fighting back against the pandemic. The Mumbai Police has lost several of its officers & constables, but our brave police officers are not going to give up & the fight will go on as long as it takes. I’m extremely happy to see events such as these recognising their service to society in this unprecedented time.” Bandra’s very own, Viveck Goenka who is arguably one of the country’s most seasoned car collectors, was present at the event with his Mercedes-Benz ‘Nürburg’. His car which was one of the marque attractions of the event perfectly represents the heritage & innovation of Mercedes-Benz cars. Mr. Goenka shared his experience at the rally with Bandra Buzz, ‘The event serves as a great opportunity

Viveck and Zita Goenka lead a convoy in their 220 SE to exchange ideas & connect with fellow car collectors. The MBCCR continues to outgrow itself with each passing year & is definitely a highly anticipated car rally.’ The MBCCR was first organised by Autocar India in association with Mercedes-Benz in 2014, rally curator & Autocar India classic car expert Perseus Bandrawalla spoke about the recently concluded rally “This year’s MBCCR event is a special one. This ‘rally for resilience’, emerging from a truly trying year, is best represented by these classic Mercedes-Benz cars that have remained resilient against the test of time.” With a bevy of cars that included every generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL, S-Class & E-Class in almost everybody style & several Mercedes-Benz convertibles present at the rally this year, the MBCCR event validated its stature of being among the most prestigious one-make events of its kind in the world. Owners take great pride in showcasing their cars

during the course of the event & therefore put in equal amounts of effort to ensure its condition is maintained. With consistent participation from Mercedes-Benz owners, the event has created a parallel environment of fecundity for Mercedes-Benz classic cars. With more than two decades of experience as a leading car restorer, Mumbai based Jehangir Bhoot stated: “The event celebrates the legacy of Mercedes-Benz, & also creates a platform for collectors to enjoy an evening in the company of some of India’s most immaculately maintained models.” The annual MBCCR that took place at Bandra was conducted with strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols, because of which the participation had to be regulated. Nonetheless, the organisers were thrilled to have celebrated this event for the 7th time & are geared to return next year with a grand exposition of classic cars. Sidhant Nayangara

Bring joy to the environment with these Christmas decorations by Total Waste What started as making a handmade gift for her daughter is today a business with sustainability at its core. Usha Nair Pithawalla has been fond of arts & crafts since she was in school but little did she know she would start her own revolutionary business someday. A quintessential homemaker, Usha started Papier 5 years ago & has been creating every day since. At the heart of her venture is the thought of repurposing old things to create new & stunning pieces of decorative ornaments & jewellery. Her unique designs & flair for ingenuity reflect

on her one-of-a-kind pieces. Swearing to sustainability, she creates her pieces from old cards, plastic bottles, wrapping paper, magazine covers, glass items that have been let go off. In an effort to empower the community, she has taught her craft to her house help, their friends, and relatives, who work together to create these gorgeous ornate pieces. Usha started Total Waste as an extension of Papier which

focused on creating eclectic pieces of home decorations for the holiday season. They have an assortment of center pieces, battery-operated candle holders, bells, tree decorations, wreaths, window ornaments (ask for Snowman Santa) & more for you to pick. Every purchase you make not only supports the underprivileged but also helps the environment. To buy your Christmas decorations from Total Waste drop a

WhatsApp message to Usha on 9821173688 & book your appointment for pick-up. You can also do your bit by contributing old things that have run their use - like plastic bottles, wood, wrought iron, and glass items to support Usha and her creative tribe. Simply email her on mailushee@gmail.com and she will have it picked up from your doorstep. Let’s end this year with love, support and kindness towards each other and the planet. Sarika Nerurkar

Make A Resolution To Upcycle The Old & Embrace The New waste. Started by IT Professionals Amita Deshpande and Nandan Bhat, the mission is to upcycle waste to conserve the environment, enable rural livelihoods and create awareness amongst citizens.

If we’ve learned anything from 2020, it is that the environment can do without us but we can’t do without it. As we enter into a new year, let’s make a resolution to choose products & businesses that are committed to protecting the environment.

Take the first step to a greener and healthier planet by tossing away toxic cleaners and switching to natural home cleaning products. Windmill Baby is India’s 1st USDA certified home cleaning brand with products that range from surface cleaners, laundry detergents, floor cleaners and dish wash liquid. “We go a step ahead & envision a future for our Windmill babies that is clean, green & nurturing. By using toxic-free, plantbased, renewable ingredients that don’t harm your child or their environment, we are here to help you make safe choices for your child’s present & future because literally, there is no planet B,” says Swati Gupta, the CEO and founder of Windmill Baby.

Their products are all plant-based and fragrance-free, made using coconut oil, lemons and lavender. It contains no SLS/ SLES, parabens or dyes and is safe for the environment and your family. You can buy their products from windmillbaby.com and they even sell on Amazon and FirstCry.

Next, let’s switch to slow fashion which is not only sustainable but absolutely artsy. reCharkha is a vegan sustainable fashion brand on a mission to repurpose plastic

They upcycle polythene bags, multilayered wrappers of gifts & biscuits, video & cassette tapes & household packaging material. You can donate in kind by sending your plastic waste (instead of tossing it out to the mercy of the environment) or you can support the EcoTribe by purchasing their upcycled products. You will be contributing to the livelihood of many tribal women & youth who manually weave fabric from plastic waste using the charkha & handloom. Check out their gorgeous tote bags, diary covers, cushion covers & planters we bet you haven’t seen anything like this before! Buy your first upcycled product on www.recharkha.org & you can drop them a message on Instagram.

If we all do our bit, we can open doors to a greener & healthier tomorrow for the next generation. This New Year’s Eve we pledge to make the switch for the better - to upcycle the old & embrace it as new. Join us, won’t you? Love sustainable products? We do too! Watch this space as we bring you the best of them from all over the country. Sarika Nerurkar

Worry not, in our own intimate but persevering town of Bandra, there are individual’s who are remarkable at what they create, bake and transform! Let’s familiarise ourselves.

She chooses an intriguing theme every year & creates around it, this year she says, “I taught my self macramé during the lockdown in May & fell in love with it & knew right then what my Christmas theme for 2020 would be....yup “knotty & nice”. Her inspiration stems from her nana & father, she reminisces her nana making toys from left-over fabric. It’s no cliche that Michele today believes in upcycling material till they’re more perfect & made sustainable. Some examples are crafty boxes, bottles & old CDs. She’s even sold impressive crosses on which she improvised during Easter. Find her on Instagram at Michele.Lawrence, your breath will surely be stolen! Daniela Cardoz As we’ve been emotionally expended due to an unanticipated global pandemic, Daniela Cardoz believed everyone around us can benefit by some extra Christmas cheer! The Bombay Christmas Shop We’ve always been creative people with a lot of ideas but no time. This lockdown gave us the time to explore those ideas. We didn’t set out to be different from anyone else. We just wanted to make things that appeal to our design aesthetic - minimalistic and timeless. Our idea is for people to collect meaningful things through the years and never tire of them. We can be reached at TheBombayChristmasShop on Instagram. Celebration Essentials Especially this year being a difficult one, Niall Curry wanted to put up something that would make people forget about the tough year even for a second by looking at some pretty Christmas decorations and lights. This was the vision I had which Stefan Pereira and I created.

I don’t know how my creativity is unique but I’m inspired by many people and learn every day. I try and put things together to create something in real life that I actually only imagined in my head. I can be reached at CelebrationEssentials on Instagram. Gillian What strongly knits Gillian’s family has great fun doing together is their undoubted talent in creativity, where an original gift is always exchanged and never out of style! Her inspiration flows through being a qualified graphic designer and her mother, an exceptional artist. She’s very popular for her mesmerising customised baubles with a gold/acrylic finish, largely sold to joyful customers during Christmas. It’s Rs. 150 for a bauble and with every tenth bauble you purchase, you’re eligible for the eleventh one at a discount. To take things to the next level, Gillian’s new passion project is creating D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) products which include coasters, magnets and festive ornaments to choose from which adds a whole new element of fun! She’s achieved more than 200 successful orders and her incredible designs have internationally travelled to Dubai, Kuwait, etc. Christmas is not the only time she’s busy, however, as her specialities extend far beyond the festive season with personalised wall clocks, attractive hangers where you can comfortably place your jewellery, wedding tabletops, cards, a hashtag stand, baptism candles and much more! Eliza Anna Eliza’s favourite subject in boarding school was Craft, from which some of us would certainly run away! She was brilliant at crochet & her project on stitching tiny adorable booties won her teacher’s heart as well as the title of best project. Her neighbour once complimented her saying she has tremendous creative ability & should sell at exhibitions in town & flea markets, that led her to be more inspired. Eliza’s resin jewellery making technique is unique & her bottle art of customized decoupage with painting & lights attracts her customer’s. Her bracelets are between Rs. 200-250 & gorgeously themed Christmas earrings for Rs. 200. She’s also made a wreath that was in wonderful condition & used for 2 years by a happy customer. Sandy Sandy is the soap queen, with her office based in Bandra. She has five years of accountable creative experience and kick-started her endeavour of designing soaps last December. They’re highly beneficial owing to being completely chemical-free, zero use of plastic, vegan, includes coconut oil, flowers and natural colours, suiting all ages. Now you can not only get clean but also be accompanied by a fashionable soap! She learned the skill while travelling with her friend in New York. Her other friends were ecstatic when she gifted them at Christmas, today the horizons are more! Her soaps have travelled to foreign places like Dubai, Greece, etc. and every Indian urban as well as rural landscapes except Kashmir and Chattisgarh. She shows no hesitation in also selling just one soap. Sandy teaches individuals so that they can begin their brand. Her classes are in Hindi/English, every Sunday, once a week. The prices of her soaps start at Rs.20 and reach up to Rs. 50. Anushka Dutt

Meet 70-year-old Ashok Dahanukar who has dedicated his life to the French language If you want to learn French in its simplest form where you can speak fluently, learn the grammar of the language, master the correct pronunciation at an affordable price, you need to contact Ashok Dahanukar who is willing to share his expertise and spread knowledge of the international language. A simple yet profound man, Dahanukar, is a specialised trainer who spent 40 years teaching the French language, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. He has been honoured by former Presidents of France Georges Pompidou and Nicolas Sarkozy who appreciated Dahanukar for his knowledge and fluency in the language. “I have dedicated my life to the French language. I started learning French when I was in Class 8. When I finished my school, I pursued a four-year French language course at Alliance Française De Bombay. I love the language because it is sweet, profound and polite,” says Dahanukar who studies at Sacred Heart Boys High School, Santa Cruz West. “It’s all in the pronunciation,” says Dahanukar. “The language is not a very easy one to learn for a beginner but neither is it a difficult one. If one focuses on the pronunciation and gets the sound of the words right then it is easy to master,” says Dahanukar. Born and brought up in an ancestral house at Khar west, Dahanukar has worked

with several French nationals, teachers, professionals and stalwarts. He was recently appreciated by the French Consulate General Christophe Legris for his CD which has 151 French sentences with their English translations. He is the first Indian to make a CD in French language which runs for 30 minutes. Recently, Dahanukar has published a booklet “Everyday French” which is a simple compilation of some useful French phrases for the layman and beginner students. The booklet contains a hundred French sentences with its English translation and a vocabulary list. Dahanukar says, “The booklet can be useful for those who are planning a trip to France or visiting for the first time as I have included some basic conversational phrases such as ‘Sorry to disturb you’ (Excusez-moi de vous déranger), ‘Would you like to have coffee’ (voudraistu prendre un café) and ‘Music is great’ (La musique, c’est ge-

nial).” He has corrected the book “French Made Easy for Indians” and “French in 20 lessons” along with winning several awards, appreciation and honour for his work in the French language. “Everyone should learn at least one foreign language. French is widely accepted internationally. It is a major language in Europe and Canada as many people in different countries speak French. Also, in India, it has become the most extensively taught foreign language in schools and colleges after English. If you ever visit France, you might receive assistance or help easily if you speak in French rather than English,” says Dahanukar. Dahanukar who is now 70-years-old goes around selling his booklet to people who are interested in learning French. He also conducts private French classes and tutorials. He says, “Many people do not approach me for classes because

I am old. But with age comes experience, learning and growth, I have dedicated my entire life to the French language. I am happy to help anyone who wants to learn the language irrespective of their learning abilities. Also, the language is my passion, so I take classes at an affordable price.” Dahanukar recalls, “In 1974-75, a French ship had come to the Mumbai shore. It was at Ballard Pier at South Bombay and I was passing by that area. I saw some French sailors walking past so I spoke in French to them. They were very pleased with the way I spoke. I requested them that I wanted to see their warship. They took me along and happily, showed me the entire warship. There were three helicopters, guns and ammunition.” In addition, Dahanukar, who has contributed to the spread and prosperity of the French language, has never visited France. Dahanukar says, “I have taught French to many people in power, authority, doctors, business professionals, airline staff, teachers, students and common people. But I have never visited France. I want to visit France once in my life but, I am looking for a sponsor because I do not have the required funds.” Contact the writer on 9702307399/ 9870173546 Ronald Rodrigues Pic: Josh Photography

AAP creates Health wing to raise awareness of Health issues Members and supporters of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a political party, have started a health wing to spread awareness among the common people, conduct local ground-level research and reach out to the people of Bandra during the unprecedented health crisis risen due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Dr Santosh Karmarkar, Pediatrician and Pediatric surgeon, is serving as the convener of this health wing to tackle health issues and educate the local people. Dr Karmarkar said, “We want to raise awareness among local people regarding the importance of health issues. We started this health wing last month because the Coronavirus pandemic has proved to us that health issues are of utmost importance and should not be neglected or ignored.” The health wing aims to educate local residents of Bandra, use the power of

youth to spread awareness and reach out to the elderly and marginalised in terms of healthcare needs. Dr Karmarkar said, “We want to conduct awareness sessions in a public gathering or through virtual mode. We also want to raise issues such as free Covid-19 vaccination for the needy, lower costs of Covid-19 tests and subsidised treatment with the government. We aim to release a monthly newsletter highlighting various health issues. Also, we are planning to create a helpline for people during the pandemic.” A blood donation camp will be conducted by the health wing on January 26 in Bandra. Dr Karmarkar said, “During the current risk-prone situation amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, many people are scared to donate blood. This is causing constant scarcity of blood at blood banks and hospitals. We are planning to conduct a blood donation camp on January 26 at

Bandra, Dadar and Kurla to create awareness, clear myths and help the needy.” The aim is to create awareness among the common masses and also encourage the government to increase the expenditure on healthcare facilities. Dr Karmarkar said, “Currently, the Maharashtra state government spends 3.2 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on healthcare while the Delhi government spends around 18 per cent. We want to appeal to the Maharashtra government to increase the expenditure to at least a mark of 6.5 per cent by next year.” The health wing funded by the AAP consists mainly of doctors from different regions of Maharashtra. But the health wing is looking for young interns who can help in the process of raising awareness regarding health issues, create a social presence and facilitate in organising and conducting virtual sessions. Prabha Pan-

Dr Santosh Karmarkar alongside AAP member Prabha Pandey dey, a senior activist and member of AAP said, “Youngsters who are looking for employment can approach to help us out in basic work. We can pay a stipend to youngsters who can assist in raising awareness in Bandra and adjoining areas.” Contact the AAP Health Wing at 9820306101 Bandra Buzz Team

REGULAR INTERNET BREAKDOWNS?? WORLD’S FASTEST INTERNET TECHNOLOGY, GPON DOES NOT RELY ON ELECTRICALLY POWERED SWITCHES.

GPON is an access method that provides fibre connectivity (currently the fastest fixed line medium) using point-to-multipoint technology. Its defining feature is that it uses passive splitters in the fibre network so that a single fibre line from the service provider can deliver connectivity to multiple premises. Whereas an active Ethernet network uses physical, electrically powered switches that open and close to send signals to different premises, GPON does not rely on electrically powered switches.

FarmeBell: Ordering fresh fruits, vegetables & grocery is now just a click away It is imperative for online aggregators to provide the best products to their clientele, and that is exactly what Farmebell does. Established as a one-stop online shopping destination for grocery, vegetables, fruits & kitchen products provider, Rugved Teredesai (alumnus of IHM Goa), Director, FarmeBell says, “My profound love for quality food products germinates from my early years at IHM Goa wherein I learnt that the addition of fresh produce in any dish accentuates its flavour and taste. Leveraging those same learnings, FarmeBell is our new entrepreneurial brand that aims to provide urban customers with freshly harvested products at best-assured rates.

At FarmeBell, you can order your weekly or monthly groceries from the comfort of your home and leave the hassle of deliveries to us. Our brand is there to serve all your basic kitchen needs with the click of a button.” At the present point in time, contactless & timely home delivery of exotic fruits, fresh vegetables and world-class products are the norm of the market, which FarmeBell adheres to. However, they take it a notch higher by also curating a special section of products which are of excellent quality yet underrated, untapped and under-marketed. The flow of service is two way, while they ensure to present their buyers with the best products, they also take the onus of representing the toil of farmers and authentic agro-based processors. Many a times producers based in the rural areas do not have the wherewithal to market and distribute their products to the urban consumers. FarmeBell reaches out to such growers and brings us hidden gems from across the length of India, right from Kolhapur to Kashmir. Some of their most sought after products include an array of traditional Kolhapuri mutton masalas sourced directly from indigenous manufacturers; authentic white honey and pure Saffron from the growers in Kashmir valley, amongst others. With a knack for speciality cuisine,

Rugved’s experience on a kitchen floor inspires him to continuously create and extend the line of products available at FarmeBell. Another interesting segment includes baked products viz. bread, biscuits, khari and much more. They also deliver vegan products, presented in association with Urban Platter. Farmebell’s latest initiative in the times of Covid pandemic is their pre-order facility. One can also now support the farmers cause by pre-ordering products even before they are harvested. In this way, the farmer is assured of timely monetary returns and secures a sale even

before the yield has left his premises, the buyer also gets a better price-point deal and procures fresh produce, directly from the farm to their table. Keeping in mind the pandemic the premises is regularly sanitised and the working staff is regularly tested by Equinox Labs. FarmeBell follows all the SOP’s along with a minimum contact policy. You can place your order via their website www.farmebell.com or download FarmeBell from Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Sidhant Nayangara

Spacious pedestrian pathway, customised bus stops & separate auto lanes soon as Bandra station area is being beautified

To gate, or not to gate Pali Hill - that is the question

Bandra’s First Covid-19 Drive-Through Testing Centre

BMC along with Samir D’Monte, architect designer & planner, is revamping the adjoining area on the west side of the 150 years old heritage structure of Bandra station With a spacious pedestrian pathway, separate lanes for private & shared auto-rickshaws, new bus stops for BEST public transport, customised locations for drop off for private vehicles & cabs, a mini-park & digital signages, the area just outside Bandra west railway station is being revamped as part of a beautification project. The BMC along with Samir D’Monte, architect designer & planner, who is a resident of Bandra, is revamping the adjoining area on the west side of the 150 years old heritage structure of Bandra railway station. The aim of this project is to ease the flow of traffic, create separate pedestrian pathways, improve the movement of the public and private transport and enhance accessibility for commuters. Samir D’Monte, who is designing the project said, “We have designed the project plan in such a way that there will be a new large pedestrian plaza in front of the station where people can safely move around and appreciate the heritage structure.” D’Monte added, “We have designed four special customised bus stops, two on the station side and two on the other side, depending on where commuters want to go. We have organised proper auto-rickshaw pickup and drop stations, separate

lanes for both private and share. There will be four auto-rickshaw lanes, two in each direction going towards Lucky Restaurant and Turner Road, one for private and one for public share auto-rickshaws. There will be covered queueing systems to protect commuters waiting for public transport from the sun, wind and rain.” The project is designed by D’Monte and is being implemented by the BMC. Sushant Bagal, junior engineer of the BMC H-west ward working on the project, “We had done a case study and traffic survey on the area adjoining the Bandra west railway station. We are implementing this project with an aim to reduce traffic congestion and create a pedestrian-friendly space where commuters can walk to the station safely and get access to BEST buses easily.” The project also aims to promote government & public transport systems such as BEST buses. Bagal said, “We aim to promote BEST bus services as the first preference for public transport followed by auto rickshaws. We will have separate lanes for autos & a separate pedestrian crossing so that there is no staggered crossing.” Ronald Rodrigues Pic by: Josh Photography Turn to Page 02 for Project Plan >>

Pali Hill Residents Association have reached out to the Municipal Corporation and proposed a “gated community” to safeguard Pali Hill better Bandra’s Pali Hill is no stranger to the spotlight. However, this peaceful & quaint neighbourhood has lately been at the centre of attention for discomforting reasons. In the past 3 months, the area has seen a number of cases of burglaries, home break-ins, mobile snatching incidents on unsuspecting walkers, & some instances of eve-teasing. Understandably, the residents are worried for their safety & security. So, along with the Pali Hill Residents Association, they are looking at various solutions that can help fix the problem. We spoke to the Association’s secretary, Madhu Poplai, who elaborated on the issue. “Apart from Rajiv Apartments, there have been break-ins in 7 other buildings in the area & at least 14 cases of petty thefts. We want to protect our residents. So, together with the Khar Police, we have put together a neighbourhood watch, with regular police patrolling in the evening. Most CCTV cameras in the area do not function properly & we can’t just rely on building security either.” The Pali Hill Residents Association has therefore reached out to the Municipal Corporation & proposed a “gated community” to safeguard the area better. They have suggested there be 4 gates at different entry and exit points of Pali Hill, manned by security guards at night, to ef-

fectively curb the crimes in the vicinity. The gate, however, has sparked a debate. While we spoke to many who see this as a welcome move, there are many others who think the gates are unfair. “Why?” reasons Sudhir, a resident. “The intention is not to stop people from using the roads. The roads will remain open through the day & will only be gated from 10 pm onwards; no one wants to disrupt free movement. This gate will only make it more secure for residents, as well as travellers.” Agrees, another resident Sonu, “Yes, it will only make the neighbourhood better. It will discourage miscreant bikers and will be safe for everyone on the road.” Leandra, another Bandraite, however, has a question, “Why not increase security in your compounds, instead? Why put up gates and block a public road? In Delhi too, where such gates have been put up, there are traffic problems at night and long detours. I don’t think that is fair at all to the rest of the public.” “I don’t think it will hinder traffic”, says Rang Ashok. “It is only a matter of 7 hours in the night, and the gate will not stop non-residents from moving in and out.” The Association’s secretary added, “The gate will only restrict thoroughfare,

with a single entry and exit point at night. Our plan is not to inconvenience anyone. Our Association understands social responsibility and we regularly do our bit for the area. For 2 whole months during the pandemic, we organized langar lunches for those most affected in and around our neighbourhood. So the idea is not to be self-sufficing; we are trying to find a middle ground. But Stephanie Pereira, a lawyer, points out, “No one living on Pali or ALM has ownership of the roads. It is not a private property for one to demand gates.” Mr. Zaheer Memon, another Bandra based lawyer, argues, “The suggestion is neither practical nor legal. It’s a route for thoroughfare and cannot be restricted to commuters. Train and increase the number of security guards instead.” We also spoke to Mr. Gajanan Kabdule, Sr. Inspector of the Khar Police Station. He chose to not comment on the pros and cons of the gate, as the decision is not under the purview of the Police Department. But he did speak to us on the substantial work being done towards nipping the transgressions in the bud. “We have increased patrolling, not just at Pali Hill but all areas under the Khar jurisdiction, where there have been cases of

street crimes and thefts. Just 15 days ago we nabbed 3 people involved in 13 cases of house break-ins and burglaries. We managed to recover property worth up to 13 lakh rupees. These are people with previous criminal records; these are not crimes born out of the pandemic, as some are suggesting. We have identified 12 spots in the jurisdiction that are most susceptible to these crimes and we have increased patrolling, surprise checks on vehicles and we have also assigned beat officers in every chowki. CCTV cameras help the Police Department in a big way. So it is important that they are in good working condition aur unki sankhya bhi badhaani chahiye.” Currently, there are 3 types of cameras - private property CCTVs, BMC installed cameras and those installed by Larsen & Toubro. While the cameras directly send feeds to the Police chowkis, they are not maintained on a regular basis and cause hindrance to police work. While the debate continues on whether to make Pali Hill a gated community or not, we can all agree that safety is not a privilege; it is a necessity in a civil society. And this beautiful neighbourhood deserves to get its peace back. Gate or no gate.

Bandra’s first of its kind drive-through COVID-19 testing centre is now functional. The much-needed facility has been made possible through the collaboration of Suburban Diagnostics & Executive Enclave. While the medical aspect is Suburban Diagnostics’ purview, the hotel management has come on board as a location partner. The means to book an appointment is completely online & the process on ground takes less than 5 minutes. Once the appointment has been confirmed, a time slot is allotted. The entry point is through the gate on Dr Ambedkar road & the exit from the rear end on the 21st road. Started on 28th June, the drive centre has successfully conducted more than 450 tests so far. Since the pandemic, there have been many accounts as to how a crisis can be turned to work in one’s favour, be it China’s aggression towards its neighbours or India’s recent streak of arresting students & activists. However, the conception of this drive-through testing centre is a unique case. Since the crisis in this scenario fulcrumed to work in favour of the community. Rahul & Monish Rohra, Managing Directors of Executive Enclave had a crisis on the personal front. On the 20th of May, 2020 the duo began showing symptoms of the virus. They had been on-ground since the hotel premises was made available for BMC & Police Personnel on COVID-19 duty. This level of exposure proved to be inimical & as soon as they realized the turn in events, they quickly took the necessary steps & decided to self – isolate in the hotel. They were in contact with doctors & family through video communication & recovered

Bandra’s first of its kind drive-through COVID-19 testing centre is now functional at Executive Enclave through (virtually supervised) self-care. A week later they had recuperated. Although they assumed and had specific symptoms pertaining to the infection, they still wanted to be certain. After a considerable amount of research and frantic calling, they finally booked an appointment at a drive-through centre. However, to get the test done they had to travel all the way to South Mumbai. This was ironical because Bandra being Bandra, and given the amenities it leverages, we didn’t have a single centre as such. Furthermore, this method is considered by many experts as one of the safest as well. The test results cleared all doubts, but on the brighter side, they were indeed on the

road towards recovery. After another week in quarantine, they were cleared and had overcome the virus. Getting back to the turning the crisis on its head, once back the Rohra brothers decided to share their learnings. Another pivotal role in the conception and execution of the drive-through testing facility was played by Dr Anjali Chabria. A family friend of Rahul & Monish, she was indeed a pillar of support and motivated them throughout their recovery. As a matter of fact, she also referred them to their existing diagnostic partner when Rahul mentioned that he wanted to do something for the good of the community. His personal experience to get a test done was not pleasant and easy.

Therefore, despite the fact that he was very well aware, this step would further hamper his business he decided to engage and thereafter started the centre keeping aside financial motivation. Rahul shared his experience & stated “As much as the physical harm, the psychological or fear aspect of the virus is also very dangerous. Due diligence & following the directives are necessary, while at the same time permitting unrealistic fear to overwhelm one’s thinking is also redundant. The most effective way to be prepared is through testing & therefore we decided to go ahead with the drive-through model for Bandra.” Sidhant Nayangara

On the Road to Recovery

Amit Butani and Neetu Butani share some truth and encouragement about facing Covid-19 at home and in the hospital Still, in isolation, our anxiety levels are surging, even as we try our best to stay home & stay safe. Amit Butani (43 years old) & his wife Neetu Butani (41 years old) hadn’t travelled outside the country for a year. They were taking all the necessary precautions since the lockdown & stepped out of home only for essentials. Amit tells us that he felt the sudden onset of fever on the 27th of April, shortly after Neetu showed symptoms of fever, nausea & stomach infection on 25th April. Writing it off as a normal stomach infection, they began treatment with antibiotics, but her fever refused to break. That’s when they decided to test Neetu for Covid-19. Against what they were expecting, the results turned out to be positive and she was admitted to a hospital. Amit knew that there was a possibility he was positive as well. As per protocol, the BMC officials came home and thoroughly tested him as well as the senior members of the family. However, they didn’t test his son and the house help beyond checking their temperature and their levels on the oxymeter, because they didn’t show any symptoms. Thankfully his parents tested negative, which was a huge relief for them. The only symptoms that Amit exhibited were fever & a headache on a couple of days. The maximum temperature his body went up to was 102 degrees. Since he exhibited manageable symptoms, BMC officials asked him to maintain home quarantine given that he’s in a separate room with an attached bathroom. And shortly after, he felt fine & normal. The viral infection spanned about 11 to 12 days for him post which he felt completely recovered. Don’t dread the disease Talking about what helped him get

with an onset of cough or headache & body ache, similar to a regular viral infection. What you can do is keep your immunity up, sleep well, eat a good amount of fruits and vegetables, let nutrients keep flowing into your body. The elderly definitely need extra care & protection during this time. But with kids, their immunity is much better off & they’ll be able to bounce back more easily. Don’t fear the disease. Trust your body to heal on its own. Our bodies are vessels that have been serving us so well and that’s what we need to remember. Simply put in the right ingredients to help it function well.

Amit Butani alongside his wife Neetu through this time, Amit says that he’s into an energy medicine routine which helped him a lot. He practises breathing exercises, kapalabhati, anulom vilom & there’s an excellent breathing technique provided by Wim Hof, which helped him a lot. Besides this, he’s been doing the usual steam inhalation, hot water gargles, sipping on green tea, taking his multivitamins, especially vitamin C & zinc. He has also been meditating a lot & his wife mentions that this period is like a self-imposed vipassana. Amit was fortunate enough to be home quarantined, but he talks about the several emotions that one goes through – there’s

frustration due to the fever. In the mornings, the body temperature is low and towards the evening or late at night, the fever spikes; that’s when the virus comes alive. There is also a feeling of defeat that comes in at times and you’re prone to a lot of selftalk. The idea is to try and stay positive through this time as this changes the body chemistry and helps with the healing. This self-upliftment is in your hands and it’s up to you to steer your mind through it.

Embrace the enemy Neetu, who has been recovering in hospital talks about her journey through Covid-19. Although Covid is similar to having a flu, Neetu was worried because she has undergone a splenectomy, which in turn reduces her immunity. But she says that if she can fight this disease, then anyone else can fight it much more easily. After surgery, her stomach has always been weak, & the virus probably attacked the weakest part of the body. She suffered from a serious stomach infection & her fever went up to 104° the next day. Although she was on antibiotics, there was a lot of weakness & she couldn’t eat much besides liquid foods. However, in a few days, the antibiotics began working & she got her appetite back. She was recovering & feeling better, which convinced her that it was only a stomach infection, something she was used to experiencing over the last few years. Just to rule it off, they took a Covid test at a drive-through testing centre.

Keep calm and let it pass For the majority of people, the virus will only exhibit flu-like symptoms, maybe

In these COVID times where due to the lockdown, when the migrants and homeless find it difficult to find a decent meal for the day, St. Peter’s Church runs a Manna on Wheels programme to feed these affected persons; Manna being the biblical name for ‘food’. The projected initiated by Dr. Richard Pereira and his wife Canice and started on the 30th of March with 25 food packets in their own car accompanied by Fr. Gerard Rodricks; today feeds 1500 persons daily through 10 cars and over 20 volunteers. The cars venture out in different marked up zones in the Bandra-Khar-Santacruz area. Partnering with the St. Joseph the Worker Church helped reach out to the needy in Bandra East area as well. Manna on Wheels received utmost support and was hugely appreciated by Fr. Frazer Mascarenhas, Parish Priest at St. Peter’s. The fillip to the programme was when St. Peter’s Youth were brought on board by their coordinator Arabelle. They brought in

a huge amount of enthusiasm and joy into the project. On Easter Sunday, the youth personally baked cakes as an add on to the meals for all persons. Other volunteers from different Parish Churches and other faiths too joined in and their passion and zeal was infectious and helped take the initiative to a newer level. More than 200 donors have come forward to chip in generously despite the harsh economic slowdown. The funds help this project serve piping hot fresh quality standard meals prepared hygienically by Vaibhav Foods & Al-Ron Caterers. Many others came forward offering their cars, drivers, facemasks & other ways to support the project. Dr. Richard personally believes in the biblical adage that when God guides He provides; it’s just finding the end & the means will follow. He appreciates the support of Fr. Frazer right from the start & the constant encouragement of Fr. Gerard; and

also the families that have supported their members being part of this initiative. Till date over 15000 meals have been served & if the lockdown extends, the project intends to continue. The Youth & other volunteers have been fearless yet taking all the precautions of social distancing, masking & sanitization. Dr. Richard is happy that this project is a contribution of the Church in reaching out to Society & is super proud of the team behind it: Arabelle, Shawn, Liam, Dr. Simone, Golda, Mallaika, Terrence, Anil, Pooja, Griselle, Jocelin, Candice, Jason, Daisy, Sam, Jerry, Milton, Allwyn, Rebecca, Savio, Sherize, Nikhil, Reagan & Dylan. He feels every volunteer, donor & prayer partner who pray for the project daily for the safety of all, have played an important role in contributing of themselves in this once-ina-lifetime crisis. The project has been a testimony to teamwork and service with Christlike love.

And to conclude in the words of one of the Youth, Liam who said ‘repayment is only with happiness seen on the faces of those receiving that Manna’. Josh D’silva

In a span of two weeks the giant HEPA-filter lungs installed outside R.D. National College changed its colour from chalk white to black ‘A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words’, therefore this is going to be a short article; thereafter which we urge you to visit National college, in order to witness the reality of the above-mentioned adage. The experience that awaits you there is indeed jolting in nature, none the less, the projection is very much real. The image that we speak of is an installation, a concerted effort between two NGOs namely Jhatkaa.org & Waatavaran. Installed outside RD National College junction and titled- ‘The Billboard that breathes’, this is a first-of-its-kind initiative in Maharashtra, where an interactive art installation has been used to demonstrate the lethal impact of polluted air on human health. Installed on the 14th of January, the unique creation is an effigy of human lungs and is made of Hepa filters and a fan. The idea is to present a realistic visual that represents the catastrophic damage that our lungs sustain, simply by breathing in the city.

On the first day, the apparatus of the installation depicts the virtuosity of a healthy pair of lungs, however as the days pass, it begins to reflect the deterioration ensued by being exposed there. A brainchild of Jhatkaa.org, the said installation was previously mounted in Bengaluru and Delhi as well. The current public exhibit that has been installed outside National college will be available for viewing till the 31st of January. The initiative aims to posit a real-time imagery reference, with regards to the caustic effect of air pollution and its inimical effect on the human repository system. Shikha Kumar, Campaigns Manager with Jhatkaa. org states “Along with Waatavaran, we decided to showcase the installation in Mumbai because air pollution is not thought of as a serious concern yet. The installation is a great way to generate public awareness and get the conversation going, as people get to see the lungs changing colour. It also gives

a real-time reading of the air quality index (AQI). Alongside this, we have an online petition asking Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the CM to take steps to clean up Mumbai’s air.” Shikha Kumar added “In a span of two weeks the lungs have become black. High levels of particulate matter in the air, caused in large part due to vehicular emissions and dust…was all trapped in the HEPA filters. This has proven to be one of the simplest yet visually effective ways of showcasing what the deteriorating air quality in the city is doing to our lungs,”. If you would like to support and sign the petition please log onto Jhatkaa.org. Kumar added as per studies carried out by air pollution research group, Urbanemissions.info, vehicular emissions and industries itself contributes 31 percent to the total PM 2.5 concentration in Mumbai. “When I saw these faux lungs, I told the campaigners that these are like my lungs,

which have been put up on a billboard. I will now get to see what is happening to my lungs as well as that of other Mumbaikars. This is the best possible way to demonstrate to people what is happening inside their body when they inhale polluted air,” said Dr. Sanjeev Mehta, Chief Pulmonologist, Lilavati hospital. Indian Naval Fighter plane ‘Sea Harrier’ now installed at Bandstand

Around 100+ members gather every morning at 6.30 am at The Laughter’s Club near Joggers Park

Over 15,000 meals have been served by St. Peter’s Youth & other volunteers who have been fearless yet taking all precautions of social distancing, masking & sanitization

creating community connect since 2010

Laugh Till It Doesn’t Hurt With The Laughters Club! A day without laughter is surely a day wasted. This holds particularly true for the renowned Laughter’s Club, near Joggers Park. It opens at 6.30 am every morning, with various exercises and different types of stretches, which has helped numerous people and especially proved beneficial for one of the members, who is truly grateful that she now experiences less pain in her knees. The members who belong to different faiths then recite a prayer together, asking to be filled with joy and in turn spreading smiles, generously. Like the words of the prayer, they too concentrate on the essence of humanity, through reaching out in love to each other. After praying, a new member is greeted by an interesting blend of laughter and high-fives! “The Club is a happy home for many of its members”, says Maheshwari, one of the

organisers. It has completed 21 years, since its inauguration on 26th January 1999 and the number is still in counting... The birthdays and anniversaries are always celebrated. This makes no one feel left out. Members don’t necessarily stay close but continue to look forward to meeting one another and catching up. To be a member of the Club, it is absolutely free but attendance is important. Once you regularly attend for a period of 3 months, you are eligible to be one of the members. While interacting with them, an 89-yearold gentleman named Lakhan makes an introduction. He proudly held his own bookstore in his former days. He is the centre of attention in the Club and undoubtedly knows how to make an impression, by lovingly calling out to his wife with the nickname, ‘’darling’’. He shared an almond with

me, along with a smile! When he was admitted in hospital earlier, his two strong pillars were his wife and the Club. He would not be as healthy today if it were not for the efforts of his “darling” wife and the Laughters Club. Later in the morning, the members enjoyed a warm cup of herbal tea. It delighted me to see how they sincerely care for one another. On my way to taking a cup for Lakhan, another gentleman by the name of Manu remarks to check for salt as it could really trouble someone with high blood pressure. In this way, they certainly are like one family. You will like to know about other events of the Club. It is an opportunity to unveil their moments of happiness, sadness, griefs and have casual conversations. They excitedly share their professional accomplishments and the news about the birth of a new

grandchild. The members even find ears to listen to in each another, at their hour of need. However, they ensure to overcome such times together. The Club organises fun picnics to Mahableshwar, etc. At present, the members are as large as 130-150 people who come every day to create a happier space in their lives. If not, at least a better start to the day. Individuals like the lady who had knee problems or Lakhan, with heart problems, asthma and other respiratory diseases have found quiet and happiness. The Laughters Club is growing in its success of finding a bigger member base as well as spreading joy with others outside. Here, there’s no time for worries or sorrow, just pure joy and togetherness... When are we seeing you? Anushka Dutt Pic Courtesy: Josh Photography

Residents of Bandra along with tourists can now have an opportunity to get a sneak peek of the functioning of the Indian Navy as the Jet Fighter plane ‘Sea Harrier SH 617’ has been installed at BJ Road, Bandstand. This Indian Naval Ship (INS) Viraat sea fighter plane has been installed by the Indian Navy on request accepted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Peter deSouza, Convener and Director of the Brihanmumbai Interschool Republic Day (BIRD) parade group, initiated this project along with the Rear Admiral R Pedankar of the Indian Navy. deSouza said, “We started working on this project in October 2019. This plane was the last Sea Harrier standing so it is a special one.” This plane will be accessible to the common public, visitors and tourists alike, says Asif Zakaria, BMC Corporator. Zakaria said, “We have displayed the Sea Harrirer in a suspended manner so that it projects as if it is taking off. Anybody and everybody walking around Bandstand will be able to look at this installation as there are no grills or barricades.” The fighter plane installed weighs around 4.5 tonnes approximately. It was part of the INS Viraat, an aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy, which was commissioned to the Indian Navy on May 12, 1987 and served for 30 years till it was formally decom-

misioned in March 2017. INS Viraat was the last British-built ship serving with the Indian Navy and was the oldest aircraft carrier in service in the world. Officers of the Indian Navy installed the Sea Harrier SH 617 at Bandstand on March 14, 2020. Captain Paresh Kowli, Indian Navy, said, “We helped in the installation of SH 617 at Bandstand.” Along with the installation, Architect Rinka D’monte has designed the space including the pathway around the plane. D’monte said, “In order to enhance the installation of the Sea Harrier, we have designed a pathway around it. We will lit up the space so that it serves as an iconic tourist attraction. There is going to be a seating place too in the space around the plane.” For the maintenance of this project, deSouza has suggested the project will be maintained by every school of Bandra for one month on a rotational basis. deSouza said, “We have many schools in Bandra who are willing to maintain this project on a monthly basis. Students and faculty members of a school can visit the site and manage basic maintenance like cleaning the space around, watering and gardening. It will provide an opportunity for students to interact with the Indian Navy and BMC while gaining a sense of responsibility.”

Peter deSouza (in a blue shirt) initiated the Sea Harrier IN617 installation project at Bandstand along with the Rear Admiral R Pedankar of the Indian Navy back in October 2019 In addition, the BJ Road where the Sea Harrier has been installed has a strong military tradition. deSouza said, “The BJ Road where the Sea Harrier is now installed has had four Vice Admirals, two Lieutenant Generals and three Air Vice Marshalls hosted there along with many senior military officers since 2014. Also, this road has dis-

played the MMCB (Mobile Missile Coastal Battery), the Pechora Missiles, the L70 Artillery of the Army and Air Defence major hardware during the Republic Day parade.” According to the BMC, the entire project costs about Rs 30 to 35 lakhs. A senior official of BMC said, “People who have worked for this project have done it for free.”

This project comprising of the installation of the plane was accepted by Sharad Ughade, former Assistant municipal commissioner (AMC) H-West ward. After Ughade, the project was led by current AMC offficer Vinayak Vispute. Ronald Rodrigues Pic Credit: Paula deSouza
