TRANSFORM YOURSELF FROM THE GIRL NEXT DOOR TO A DIVA

Based in Mumbai, this accomplished and artful make-up artist has worked on different make up looks for a diverse demographic, ranging from aspiring models, to socialites and working women alike. With a focus on conscious cosmetics, she likes to provide her discerning clientele with the opportunity to maximize their “look good, feel fantastic” quotient through either a simple touch-up or a full-blown makeover. Madhuri Thadani gave us an insight into what she loves about makeup, what drives her, a sneak peek into the new buzzing salon in town: Madhuri’s Signature Make up Studio, Hair Salon, Skin & Spa Zone & Total Make over Kiosk. What is your make-up mantra? The art of transformation is one that is truly encapsulated in the work of a make-up artist. From sculpting and contouring to

adding youthfulness and sophistication, the ability of makeup artistry for me has no boundaries. Make-up is technically magic! A blend of right techniques, right products and correct tools can transform you into a diva or a celebrity. What is an important piece of beauty advice you have for women? Take time out to treat yourself well. This advice holds as much importance for men. Your skin needs more than just a splash of water. Invest in regular detoxifying facials and massages, given Mumbai’s stress levels, pollution, humidity and grime. Above all, eat wisely, drink plenty of water and get enough rest. What are the types of make-up you specialize in? My style of make-up is perfectly blended

foundation that looks like your second skin. The Bride, The Red Carpet, Party Girl and The Chisel are some of the transformations I love working on. I also specialize in weddings, receptions, engagements, sangeets and cocktails. I super-specialize in Punjabi and Sindhi weddings, Indian tradition & international bridal make-up. What drives you to go to work every morning? Would you believe me if I told you that make-up is my one and only love (laughs). I enjoy every single bit of it and seeing the beauty and transformation of a client at the end really satisfies me. That is more than enough for me to get to work every morning! Let’s be fair about the Bandra Fair ‘September in Bandra’ is the most awaited time of the year, where fun and frolic is at its fullest. Lakhs of people throng the ‘Bandra Fair’ with smiles on their faces and joy in their hearts. It is the festive season that truly graces Bandra with a marvellous history and with an astounding recognition all round the world. As legend goes, the now venerated ‘Statue of Our Mother Mary’ had been found floating in the Arabian Sea between 1700 and 1760 A.D. Locals who believed that this was a miracle began celebrating this occasion annually ever since. To summarise – the Bandra Fair has approx. a 300-year storyline to it. What makes the Bandra Fair so special? It is its ability to attract devotees & pilgrims of all faiths. Both the young and the old, the rich and the poor enjoy this fiesta without any restrictions. Ardent devotees flock to the Mount Mary’s Basilica to place their petitions and thanksgiving with faith, so that Our Dear Mother will intercede for them relentlessly. The Novenas and the Eucharistic services here imbibe spirituality and harmony in everyone. The ambience at the Mount is so magnificent and exquisite that no one can ever deny the fact that Our Mother is present there, advocating on our behalf. Just a look at Our Mother’s face and the Infant Jesus in Her loving arms is enough to touch our troubled souls and console us with Her motherly care. Mary constantly beckons us affectionately. Family and friends, irrespective of their differences go up the long winding stairs which

lead to the Basilica and return invariably hand-inhand with the assurance and the blessings that Our Gentle Mother offers them. Truly, “All Generations will call Mary Blessed!! Besides this religious atmosphere, the Bandra Fair is a socio-cultural mixture. This rejuvenates sad and weary faces, instilling in them the need to participate wholeheartedly in the celebration of Mother Mary’s birthday. Right from the Basilica to the fondly nicknamed ‘September Garden’, stalls with mouth-watering delicacies and sweets, goodies and toys for kids and various other miscellaneous items are patronised by one and all. Thrilling rides at various spots in this fair adds to the enjoyment. Even though there is a lot of perspiration, the inspiration in the minds of the people still remains strong. The best thing to admire about this awaited fiesta is that everyday is a novel experience for one to cherish and savour to their heart’s content. So come on Bandra – it’s our very own ‘Bandra Fair’ that always will stand out in it’s splendour to create a melodious haven of serenity, happiness, peace, love and hope to all who believe in this eternal blissful ‘magical’ fest. September brings to all good hope, Joy mystically radiates on every road! Mary helps us always, our trials to cope.. In Her memory, the Bandra Fair will never erode! Joshua Norris

Invite Wealth through your Front Door with Feng Shui Consultant Maria Hussain R e c e n t l y, one of my clients called on me for a home cons u l t a t i o n .“ I feel trapped trying to get through the door!”, she said and she hoped that Feng Shui would bring in some new energy into her life; especially her social life. She lives in a small flat where she needs to optimize every square foot of space. She stores things in all places. When I arrived for the Feng Shui consultation, the first thing I realized that her front door does not open all the way. It turned out that she was using the space behind her door as a hanger rack. As a result, the door couldn’t open all the way because it was running into a big pile of jackets, umbrellas, shoes and other stuff.

In Feng Shui terms, positive energy was getting stuck as it attempted to come through her front door, causing her to feel stuck in her life. By stopping Chi right from the start, she missed out on its power to bring good energy into her life in the form of new prospects, strong relationships & happy family bonding. The main door has to open to at least a 90-degree angle to abundantly welcome positive energy. We removed everything from behind the door, putting out-ofseason things away and finding a proper storage for the rest. Soon she called to tell me about all the good changes that she observed in her life - in particular, her social life showed much improvement. A good Feng Shui front door nourishes the house. It is called the mouth of positive energy. Let the front door open inwards and not outwards so as to welcome and pull in

To turn out victorious the participant had to go to thrilling competition which would

check their 14 Principles of Management like co-ordination, decision making, etc. Comfest fever was seen everywhere in the campus. Commercial Housie had set the stage on fire as it was a block bluster event. In the Shark tank event many business idea took birth. The Presentation competition were full of research work conducted by the students to take simple topics from classroom to another commercial level. The quiz competition took a check not only their GK and academic knowledge but also their skills in solving puzzles as well as their commercial knowledge. The professors-in-charge, Dr. Harmeet Kaur Bhasin said “We are glad everyone received our efforts with such appreciation

and interest. This is exactly what drives us all. We conduct such events so as to help our students to face the commercial world challenges as well as to select a best career based on their abilities and skills in a fun and engaging manner. My colleague professors are also quite pleased with the organizing committee and volunteers’ efforts, we hope this enthusiasm is carried forward by the next batch of students”. The event had to go through a number of adjustments and readjustments due to the bad weather conditions prevailing in the city but despite all odds the fest proved to be a success and the students’ passion shined through. MOON-LIKE CRATERS ON SHERLY RAJAN ROAD

Life-threatening potholes on Sherly Rajan Road Commuting from Pali Mala to Rizvi Complex via Sherly Rajan Road is a nightmare – even in broad daylight. It has everything for an accident to occur at any time. This stretch is an important link to Bandra’s North West, which has seen a population boom in the last 30 years. And these moon-like craters are the cause of sprained ankles, unexpected splashes of water on

your new pant or dress – and worst of all, a sudden turn to avoid a pothole & you get hit by a vehicle. Oh, for good roads! Till a couple of years back, this road had paver blocks that had improved the surface, making commuting comfortable. There were sign posts at Mala & Rizvi Complex ends, prohibiting heavy vehicles & buses. Then, due to vested interests; these signs

disappeared. Also, for no apparent reason; the paver blocks were removed & the road resurfaced with tar. The potholes that we see now are a result of a job done incorrectly. Local residents are furious. Jayesh Kelkar told us, “Are our elected representatives blind to our daily plight? Now, we only see them just before elections. We plan to collectively file a PIL against the concerned BMC officials.” Meanwhile, there are many other bad roads in across Bandra; that need highlighting. Our readers are encouraged to point them out to us, via email or on Bandra Buzz social media platforms. The BMC needs to give us a better deal for the taxes that we pay, which go towards their salaries. It is our birth right – and we will have it. Bandra Buzz had a video put on their Facebook page (see image) on 22nd July 2017 to highlight the problems faced by residents. Manoj Lalwani

Fr Joe celebrates his 75th Birthday at Mt. Carmel Church hall of Mount Mary in the morning. After all it was his 75th birthday and 50 years as a catholic priest. Fr. Joe’s role model is Mother Teresa (now, Saint Teresa of Kolkata). His worldwide outreach is highly appreciated with many high honours. Just after 6pm he was as ‘Title Waves’, Bandra, along with Bishop Agnello Gracias to launch his book: ‘The Spiritual Paradox of Addiction’, which he has co-authored with Ashok Bedi M.D. – who was virtually present via Skype and spoke to the audience ‘live’. Looking fit and fine (yoga must have helped him look at least 15 years younger) in a black suit, Fr. Joe was picture perfect and alert as ever. After briefing the audience about Kripa and a little on “Addictions that we all have”; all sang Happy Birthday. Many past addicts attended, out of gratitude. Then, a long queue awaited their turn for Fr. Joe to autograph his new book, that they had just purchased.

Local MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar came to wish Fr. Joe Pereira on his 75th birthday. Most of his blood family were present – some coming from Vasai, where he has his ancestral home. Later, around 8:30pm a large gathering that filled the Mt. Carmel Church hall greeted Fr. Joe and sang a thunderous “Happy Birthday”, once again, with Bosco getting his well-wishers in a good mood – while he cut his birthday cake. This was the ideal opportunity for Fr. Joe to mingle with family, parishioners & close friends. He was beaming with joy, probably thanking his saviour for giving him the opportunity to see this day. A sumptuous dinner helped in creating fellowship that would be remembered by all present, forever. As someone at the fellowship that evening whispered, “Fr. Joe is a jewel in the crown of our Almighty God”. So true. Keith James

GAURI LANKESH MURDER CASE: VOICE OF ‘DISSENT’ OR ‘DEATH CALL’ Following the murder of Gauri Lankesh, the Bengaluru-based senior journalist and activist who was killed by unidentified men at her residence on 5th September 2017, citizens and activists came together to protest unanimously against oppression of dissent. Over 300 supporters gathered at Carter Road Amphitheatre, Bandra, with banners and placards, on September 6, from 6 pm onwards, to ‘fight the good fight’ of freedom of speech and expression. Shot at point blank, the outspoken journalist, who was left liberal and anti-establishment, ran an article exposing three BJP leaders in her Kannada weekly Lankesh Patrike, last year. Protests in Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune and Mangalore were observed to condemn the oppression of free press. The supporters at Carter Road demanded justice and were brazenly vocal about the government’s regressive steps. It criticised its rightist ideologies through chants, slogans, speeches and poetry. Over 300 citizens and activists came together to protest unanimously against oppression of dissent at Carter Road Amphitheatre journalists, opposition party members, activists and artists were present. Remembering other journalists like M. M. Kalburgi, Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare, who were also killed for dissi-

dence, actress Shabana Azmi critiqued the move and opined that nothing could be worse than oppressing the voice of truth and dissent. Terrorism shall not shut truth and citizens will not be silenced.

Youngsters who were part of the protest were indicated through a Facebook event. Mumbai based Joshua Thomas (29) and Komal Mohite (28) came to know about the gathering through Facebook. In the light of such subjugation, Mohite who’s pursuing her PhD from JNU said, “State repression is not new. It has happened even in the previous regimes. What is happening under the current regime is even more brazen. They are going after high-profile names and people who are even mildly critical about the current disposition.” As the crowd increased, police protection was tightened. Bearing protocols in mind, the crowd did not hamper traffic and discipline was maintained to avoid an ugly turn. The aim of activists and journalists, at the gathering, was not to create a sporadic movement but mobilize it further to lend the nation’s press freedom of expression without being subject to taunts and subjugation. Rendezvousing London on a Budget Back from London a few weeks ago, but a piece of my heart still lingers there. This is the land where Shakespeare wrote plays, where ambitious kings and scandalous queens ruled, where the gentleman’s clothing the ‘suit’ was invented, where the famous forgotten glare down at you from stone horses all across the city, where the river Thames holds secrets of love and revenge, adventure and misfortune, hidden in full view. While exploring the touristy bits of London was important to a backpacker like me on a budget, experiencing the city like a Londoner is where the real thrill lies. • Avoid the Hop-On Hop-Off bus & choose to walk across Central London. Explore Leicester square, Westminster, Oxford Street on foot. You will not only enjoy real feel of the place, but also venture into shops and corners, you would have otherwise missed. I spent my evenings strolling down the Thames, people watching, reveling in the spirit and culture of a place so vibrant and welcoming of all. London’s cosmopolitan variety extends to its cuisines, restaurants, bars, theatres and markets. • While cycling through Hyde park or strolling through Kensington Gardens where Peter Pan comes from is fun, the green carpet of Hampstead Heath is where I rolled free spirited, in the grass without a single care in the world. Not on any tourist map, Hampstead Heath is a huge grassland amidst ponds, making for a free yet perfect picnic spot and a doggie paradise. Pack

some wine, cheese, fruits and set yourself up for a cheap and cheerful fun day in the outdoors with your family, friends and pet. • Days were spent exploring the markets and the street food scene that London has to offer. London’s markets make great yet affordable shopping destinations with several good bargains selling everything from flowers and food to art and antiques and foods from across the world. • Camden is a thriving market area. Open through the year it hosts shops selling vintage jewelry, artwork and gifting items, music records and a variety of food stalls. • Borough market stacked with gourmet food, is a paradise for fruits, meats and cheese. • Portobello, my favorite has been a market since the 1800s and is famous for its antiques, posters, breads and cheese. After

feasting on the market, wander through neighboring Notting Hill and let the magic of the movie wash over you as you chance upon the bookstore. • Watching a play in one of the many theatres across London is a fun experience and if you keep your eyes open, chances are you would stump upon a free rendition somewhere nearby. Busking happens all across London’s busy streets. Enjoy the music and if you’ve up to it, step in and shake a leg just like I did to the Spanish guitar, one happy high night at Tottenham Court Road. • London’s tubes are one of the world’s best public transport systems and with the oyster card making it affordable, it’s easy to explore the quitter neighborhoods in and around London. While many visitors stay within the confines of Central London, choose to go beyond for a day or two into lesser visited neighbouthoods where you

will chance upon delicious yet cheaper versions of the local food and a real taste of what London has to offer. Enjoying London often quoted as one of the most expensive cities in the world does not mean breaking the bank. Feast on local street food, picnic in one of the many gardens, and stroll down the Thames by night. The river runs like dark silk through the heart of the city, and the bridges dance with light. There are corners of silence in the revelry of the West End & Soho, and in the inky shadows, foxes patrol Hyde Park. London does, though, have a wicked and dry sense of humor. It is clever, literate and dramatic. It is private & aloof, a sophisticated temptress, but surprisingly sentimental. As my plane took off from Heathrow and London started to get tinier in the distance, I felt the tug and pull of a city I hope to call my own someday. Brinelle Lobo

BARIATRIC SURGERY IN BANDRA Dr. Biswanath Gouda is an Advanced Laparoscopic GI & HPB Surgeon, well trained in the US and Paris. His research includes bariatric treatment for morbidly obese patients & treatment modalities for liver and pancreatic cancer through laparoscopic surgeries. He’s been practising in Mumbai since 12 years and is the only surgeon in Bandra to perform this surgery. Bariatric surgery is proving to help obese people alleviate or reduce their diabetes, control blood pressure and improve fertility among women. Here’s what the expert has to say. What is bariatric surgery? Bariatric surgery is performed to treat metabolic disorders. It is also called metabolic surgery or weight-loss surgery. The most commonly performed bariatric surgery in India is sleeve gastrectomy. In sleeve gastrectomy the stomach is reduced to the size of a banana. This is performed through a laparoscopic surgery. Other types of laparoscopic surgeries are Gastric Bypass and Mini Gastric Bypass. How helpful is Bariatric surgery to obese patients? Bariatric surgery is weight-loss surgery where patients lose their excess body weight over a period of 12 to 16 months. It also helps them normalize their blood sugar, blood pressure, blood cholesterol and other ailments.

Is bariatric surgery cost effective? Yes, it is cost effective. People think that weight-loss surgeries can be afforded only by the rich. That’s not true. These surgeries are available at affordable prices as well. It ranges between 2.5 to 4 lakh. The cost is high due to the use of surgical staplers. However, there are financial entities that offer financial support based on your income. What is the right age to undergo bariatric surgery? Anyone between 20 and 70 years of age could undergo this surgery. I personally feel, people over 70 should not go in for this and for those below 20 should focus on dietary measures and exercise before deciding for a surgical arrangement as they are still young. How long does the surgery last for? The surgery is done in an average of two hours while the average hospital stay for a patient is two days. In case of risk factors, the patient is kept under observation for 24 hours in the ICU. How much weight-loss can one expect through these surgeries? It’s purely mathematical. If you are 100 kilos, your ideal body weight should be 60 kilos. So, you are 40 kilos overweight. Out of which you begin to lose 80%, that is, 30-32 kilos in the first one year. Basically, you lose 80% - 90% of your excess weight through bariatric surgery. Is this surgery gender relative? 70% of the patients who undergo bariatric surgery are females. Is obesity related to PCOD? What causes

PCOD among teenagers? PCOD is caused by hormonal imbalance, adiposity and insulin resistance. You’ll observe that most obese patients become diabetic. The fat cells of their body increases which reduces the insulin production. This is beneficial to females who suffer from PCOD or PCOS as their hormonal level is improved, thus improving their fertility rate. Does bariatric surgery have any side effects? There are no side effects as such. We check the functionality of heart, lungs and kidneys. If the patient is of high risk, only then they are kept in the ICU. This type of surgery should be done in a hospital with all amenities and by a bariatric team. How is bariatric surgery different from liposuction? In liposuction, we only suck out the fat cells. You lose fat as per your requirement. But this is only temporary. The fat grows back after 6 months and the situation is the same. Bariatric surgery, on the other hand, is purely surgical and metabolic, with the use of laparoscopic instruments, which normalizes your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, leads to a more permanent solution and improves the quality of life. What is Laparoscopic surgery in simple terms? In layman’s term, laproscope is understood as laser or minimal invasive surgery. We do not cut open the abdomen to operate, instead make small cuts and slide instruments with minute cameras, through these cuts. The magnified image onscreen helps to perform the surgery smoothly. The pain after surgery and complications are less and the patient recovers faster. Why are some obese patients still reluctant to undergo bariatric surgery? Firstly, people are reluctant because of the myths that are reinforced. Out of 1000, the rate of fatal complications is around 1, which is extremely low when done at appropriate centres. But people still focus on the downside which reinforces fear. It should be understood that bariatric is not a risky surgery. Secondly, people do not

reveal the fact that they have undergone a bariatric surgery because of the stigma attached to it. What precautionary measures should patients maintain after the surgery? Bariatric surgery is a tool that helps you regain life. Once they start losing weight after the surgery, exercise is equally important with a well regulated dietary habit to keep oneself toned. The whole concept of bariatric surgery is based on diet. If you can’t control your diet, you shouldn’t opt for the surgery as your first option. We put the patients on a low calorie and high protein diet and prescribe them calcium and vitamin tablets. In fact, calcium and vitamin supplements should be taken by all people once they cross the age of 40. Why is it important to take calcium and vitamin supplements? It is a misconception that you meet all your requirements through food. That’s not true. A glass of milk is helpful only till 8 or 12 years of age. After which, your body doesn’t digest it. To procure the suggested calcium amounts, you would have to consume 20 liters of milk per day. As an alternative, calcium & vitamin supplements are important. Should an obese person use the gym? Someone who his extremely overweight should not join the gym or run the treadmill because that leads to higher risks of trauma or cardiac arrest. Instead they can try plain walking, yoga or swimming. One advice to the parents who are worried about their child’s food habits. In a fast paced generation, there’s no time for home food. With both parents working, children find it convenient to binge on fast food. These things should be avoided. Try sticking to home food as much as you can. Gadgets have made lifestyle very sedentary. Obesity has become an epidemic. The best way to prevent it is if kids play out every evening. In this way, we can aim at a healthier tomorrow. SEPTEMBER 2017 13

September Shake Up Dear Reader, September sends signals of ‘Wake Up’ – after a long spell of moody monsoons. With the traditional Bandra Fair taking us to centre-stage, the upbeat feeling starts now. Traffic preparedness at the Mount and surrounding spots have commenced, to take care of pilgrims. We will witness a good balancing mix of faith and fun. Yes, is this a time for wake up or shake up? Well, actually both; because upcoming events need interaction – and planning needs to be done now. Major festivals of different communities, will lead us to the New Year – and Bandra will soon be vibrant with activities. Political parties take maximum opportunities to gain much needed visibility for future gain and power. Bandraites buzz around from meeting to meeting, to plan events. Being the epicentre of activism, Bandraites see and feel a lot of the passion fuelled by feelings of wanting justice. The Carter Promenade Protest against Bangalore-based Jounalist Gauri’s cold-blooded murder – is an eye-opener of India’s ugly under belly. The citizen protest for the Mumbai Metro that crosses areas on and around SV Road in Bandra, Khar & Santacruz, to go underground – is a collective

positive expression to concerned authorities, so that future disasters can be avoided. And, the good news that our gaothans will not be equated with slums in the new DP – is heart warming. Honestly, we hope this will be implemented in deeds. Your favourite local newspaper is alert to all that is happening around. With your involvement and continued solid support, we are evolving one step at a time. Soon, technology will take us to new heights and our dear readers will have an enhanced Bandra Buzz experience. Meanwhile, wishing you a “Happy Bandra Feast” – and do take care.

Residents from Bandra, Khar and Juhu demand Metro 2B corridor made underground On Sunday, 10th September, at 11 am - residents of the western suburbs including JVPD, Juhu Gulmohur, Santa Cruz, Khar and Bandra had organised a massive public meeting at Jamnabai Narsee School Hall, JVPD, Juhu. This was for spreading awareness and take appropriate action for an Elevated Metro-2B, that is proposed to pass through these neighbourhoods. Buses were organised from Bandra, Khar & Santa Cruz. People attended in large numbers, as many along the route will be affected, if this is implemented. The proposed Metro-2B will be 23.6 kms long, connecting western & central suburbs to the northern suburbs - and cost around 10,000 crores, if completed by 2019. Social Activist Anadani Thakur, Managing Trustee of H-West Federation, spoke, “2,00,000 passengers will throng SV Road everyday! Can we take this type of crowd – and let chaos prevail. We want the Metro, but it should go underground – otherwise No Metro”. Actress Raveena Tandon took to Twitter, saying, “When all protests fall on deaf ears. When the state ignores its

beyond control. Residents decided that they will now take the legal route to compel the government to go underground for Metro-2B after the meeting. Citizens were angry that south Mumbai residents agitated and got the Metro underground, whilst the authorities want it to be elevated at Bandra, Khar & Santacruz. They felt that this was like a

step-motherly treatment. Some shouted slogans: “Save our suburbs”. The solidarity was infectious. Your opinion on this burning civic & social issue is vital to get the authorities who matter – see the light. They should heed the views of common citizens, who will bear the brunt of wrong decisions. Sandeep Kendal
