Neville D’souza Football Turf brings Mumbai’s Football Fever to Bandra

VALERIAN D’COSTA COMMUNITY REPORTER Wondering where this picturesque football field is located amidst the urban noise surrounding it? If you’re someone passing through Bandra Reclamation regularly, this sight would have greeted you on your way in and out of Bandra. The Neville D’souza Football Turf is the latest of the sporting upgrades our suburb of Bandra has deservingly acquired. Named after the famous Indian footballing legend - who seemed to have been forgotten in the recent past, until now – the newly laid turf is a sprawling 106x72 metres, following the dimensions for international matches as laid down by FIFA.

The decision to name the turf after the fabled Neville Dsouza was a unanimous decision after a resolution was tabled, according to Aaditya Thackeray, chairman of the MDFA. Ryan Menezes, MDFA Committee Member and co-owner of Sellebrity FC said, “Neville Dsouza was the first name suggested and without much fuss was agreed upon given his unforgettable contribution to Indian football.” India’s most renowned and decorated football player till date, Neville Dsouza, rose to fame with his heroics at the Melbourne Summer Olympic Games in 1956, when he scored a hat-trick – the first Asian player in the history of the Olympics - against the mighty Socceroos, leading India to the semi-finals of the football tournament. This, although he was an extraordinarily impressive player back home. Neville, who plied his trade for Bombay club Caltex - besides Goan Sports Club and Tata’s - would have been a forgotten hero but for Bandra’s latest footballing venue which will be hosting the MDFA league games in the Men’s First Division, Women’s League as well as the Youth League games. The new venue which was christened three years back in November 2015 came with its own share of hardships. From acquiring the parcel of land to neighbouring residents creating a mess to restructuring the boundary walls, it took a while for Mumbai’s latest footballing paradise to get the ball rolling. But then, nothing can stop Bandra’s immense love for the sport and what we now have is an exquisite lush green carpet ready for some glamorous football action. Earlier, given just a couple of venues at St Xavier’s Ground in Parel and the iconic Cooperage pres-

sure on hosting and squeezing in five divisions in the mens’ leagues, the women’s league as well as the various youth leagues, in the span of the season’s eight months, was tremendous. Now that MHADA has leased the venue to the MDFA on a caretaker basis, delays in the various leagues can be called a thing of the past. The venue played host to its first games of the MDFA youth league earlier this month on the 12th of November under the aegis of Aaditya Thackeray - MDFA President and brain behind the plan, Dinesh Nair - Director of the Association of Indian Football Coaches (AIFC), Rahul Kanal – Core Committee member of the Yuva Sena - who has played a pivotal role, as well as Ryan Menezes. Starting in the last week of November, the Men’s MDFA First Division League will set the ball rolling in what promises to be a start of a new era in Bandra’s footballing history. “It’s not just the turf, the ground has been equipped with changing rooms for both men and women, as well as washroom facilities and the feedback so far has been really encouraging. Bandra being a suburb with a massive sporting culture and having produced many fine athletes,

it was time we had something like this for the sport.” When asked about how the locals will benefit with the new ground, Ryan was positive, “Over the months, the MDFA will also lay out a policy for Bandraites to use the ground for sometime during the evenings. This will help increase the standard of the game as well as reduce injuries. If all goes well, we may also try to have a few games of our own Bandra League here besides inter-school and inter-college games. All in all, it’s a win-win for everyone!” Rahul Kanal seemed ecstatic at the launch of the new venue, “Finally we Bandraites have something to cheer about! The turf is capable of hosting I-League matches. We also intend to set up floodlights soon so that the ground can be used optimally. For that we’re looking at inviting corporates to help us cover the cost of the expenses incurred in using the lights. Besides, we want the venue to play host to referee and coach training programs in the coming future, which is essential to the development of the game. As a Bandra boy and a Stanislite I’m elated to have something like this right here in the heart of Bandra!”

THE GANG WARS OF OLD BANDRA 10 Tips to Improve Brain Function & Prevent Alzheimer’s Onset LUKE COUTINHO COMMUNITY REPORTER

CIRCA 1955 In many ways, the Gangs of Bandra were like the Gangs of New York. How can we forget about the inner cobbled narrow pathways, the bonhomie, the quaint cottages, and the lilting music from the commercial service of the Radio Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation; with the tempting smell of nonveg food wafting from the side streets? Let’s relive the days of yore. When the local mob ruled “khullam khulla”, right out in the open - you knew who your enemy was & who was not, unlike today. In those days, everything was settled on the streets and the lingo was very colourful, with all the “f’s” & “b’s” bellowed loudly; so all could hear, sending shivers up innocent spines. Nobody went to the courts in those days, in fact few even went to the police with complaints. If you dared, you went to ‘the local gangs’ - or you just shut up. A few of these “reformed gangsters” are alive today; old, sick, forgotten, lonely people. But when they speak of the old days, it’s with the same fire in their eyes – as in their youth. Of course, many have died. HOW DID THE GANG WARS BEGIN? Most people living in these parts (gaothans), say it all began in the villages of Bandra - in Ranwar Village, Chapel Road, Waroda Road, Bazaar Road, Boran Road, Chimbai, Kantwadi, Malla, Sherly, Rajan, Chuim, Pali and near the steps of Mount Mary’s Church. Every villager swears the gang wars all began in their village – citing dates and details of incidents, which are an integral part of Bandra’s unique folklore. When Anjie (name changed), living in Somnath Lane, Bandra; wanted to marry an Anglo-Indian boy, her parents

objected to the liaison. Promptly the boy got his brothers together to fight with her family. Out came the bicycle chains, the soda water bottles and the hockey sticks, for the unholy confrontation – and action followed. The lane was strewn with soda water bottles, so that the opposite gang could not make any headway. All awaited action. Swords, choppers, crowbars, knives and knuckledusters were the weapons of these gang wars. The common man had to keep well away from the scene; otherwise he too would join the list of wounded, in the duels that were settled on the streets - like in the Wild Wild West – with bloody street scenes seen almost daily. The Bandra Fair was held once a year from the footsteps of the Mount Mary’s, all along John Baptist Road and culminating near Mt Carmel’s way down - even extending up to Jeff Caterers. Now, a group of boys from Mahim, who used to visit the Fair almost always; would pick a fight with the Bandra boys - and the Bandra boys consisting mostly of school dropouts, used to do likewise, when they visited the fairs in Mahim. Jobs were hard to get, and if the factories knew you were from the villages of Bandra, you were never called for an interview. So the last resource to earning money for these boys was distilling liquor (“Grog” as it was called in those days) at home. Also, since those were the days of ‘prohibition’, many of the people living in these parts, distilled their own liquor (illegal of course). If any gang would distill their stuff on a piece of land belonging to another gang; it was kind of “trespassing” - and this lead to most of the fights. Inputs from Francis H. D’Sa

Forgetfulness in old age is probably because of poor brain health. In order to prevent diseases like dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s its important we take care of it. The body gives different signs in order to tell that something is wrong with it. When a certain symptom occurs again and again, it is important to listen to it and find out what is the cause behind it. For instance, problems with brain would make you forgetful again and again, it would make you wake up with a heavy head, or make you feel the need of caffeine. These are all signs that your body is giving you for poor brain health. How to prevent brain health from getting worse? Low-carb diet: Following a low-carb diet in an unhealthy way can make your brain starve for energy. Brain produces its own insulin to convert glucose from blood stream into energy. Lacking insulin makes your brain neurons starve for energy. This results in conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s & dementia in the later stages. Just like your physical body, your brain is a living organ which requires energy to work efficiently. Exercise: The human body was not designed to stay in one place for too long. For people who are involved in jobs which requires them to sit in one place for long periods of time, they should make sure to engage in some kind of physical activity in order to keep their brain healthy. Exercise improves blood flow to the brain & protects nerves in the brain. Include more Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet: Omega-3 fatty acids are important for the healthy functioning of the brain. You can have them from natural food sources such as walnuts, fatty fish, flax seeds.

Get proper sleep: Cells in the body need rejuvenation, which occurs while sleeping. Sleeping boosts immunity and helps in balancing hormones. Getting proper sleepgives room for the brain to detoxify. While sleeping, the brain cells shrink by around 50 to 60%, thereby creating space in between the cells. This allows detoxification of the brain. Coconut oil: Another essential fat which is important for your brain health. It is a medium chain triglyceride which gives power to your brain. Coconut oil is essential for giving your brain energy and is also helpful in treating conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and dementia. Vitamin D and Vitamin B12: Deficiency of these vitamins can be harmful for the brain. Ensure that your levels of Vitamin D & Vitamin B12 are at the recommended levels. Being deficient in them can lead to forgetfulness in later stages. Ensure healthy gut health: Your gut is connected with your brain. This is the reason that we feel feelings like anxiousness, nervousness in the gut. Depression and anxiety have a direct link with gut health. Improving your gut health improves your brain health simultaneously. Listen to music: Music has a direct impact on your brain health. Studies have shown that classical music has a promising effect on your brain health. It helps you challenge your mind. You should indulge in brain stimulating exercises like problems and solutions to those problems, solving puzzles, etc. Avoid constant complaining and negativity: Constant complaining has been found to weaken wiring in the brain. Communication and interaction: People who are suffering with brain problems need to keep interacting with people around them. Constant interaction helps in keeping the brain healthy.

Bandra Slums – Prone to Dengue, Robbery, Fire & Drugs On the night of 25th October, a colony of middle income residents on Chinchpokli road was hit by professional burglars, in a planned & mediated attack, much to the surprise of its hapless tenants, who woke to find gold, cash, jewelry, mobiles, television, utensils & clothes, all gone. Grieving victims filed FIR & by end of day, the police got cornered for inaction. At sunset, an Inspector stepped forward to calm the already heated situation. As usual political parties are very good for hogging cheap publicity. Elected representatives joined the bandwagon to sympathize, offer stale advice & willing to co-operate if the need arose to install CCTV cameras. CCTV cameras in zopadpatti areas? Our politicians know how to play to the gallery. Yes, yes, as some locals suggested that the BMC provide light along narrow pathways of the chawl. But then who is going to pay the bill? On 30th October at 11 am, another colony of shanties went up in flames in Nargis Dutt Nagar, destroying seventy tenements of tin sheds, charring everything black with raging smoke. Twelve fire engines were rushed to the site & three water tankers, as cooking gas cylinders exploded in unison, causing panic & mayhem in the locality. Those whose houses were destroyed were offered Rs. 5000/- as relief. Nobody came forward to collect because it was too little. Our PM has promised housing for all by 2022. What he means is houses with brick walls, proper toilets, water supply, leak proof & fire resistant structures, so people don’t have to build shanties and live a dangerous life. India will have to wait and see if the PM fulfills his promises, but then 2022 is a long wait and a lot of things will happen between now and then. The initial aura of his popularity is beginning to wane as we scan some election results of bypolls in the States for assembly and Lok Sabha. There are rumours that fire in Nargis Dutt Nagar, was handiwork of some tenants desper-

ately wanting redevelopment, but then such stories have no proof. Each year the monsoon season takes a heavy toll of lives through diseases and dengue being the most dangerous and fatalistic of them all. So far Maharashtra has recorded the highest number (over 4600) cases of Dengue with 14 deaths. How do these things happen when the PM has put in place a very sophisticated programme of ‘Swachh Bharat’ from Day One of his tenure in 2014? Does anybody have the answers for the deaths from diseases in the State? Obviously the answer is no because when there are several farmer deaths from suicide, nobody in the government bothers. It is only the Opposition parties that make all the noise in the house to show the people that they are alive and not dead. This whole farmer thing is like mafia business because they take loans from Co-operative Banks which are owned by politicians. This is one of the reasons the government was not allowing co-operative banks to accept demonetized notes after 8th November 2017. This is all one big vicious circle of a Game of Thrones, each getting its own turn to loot and make merry. There is also another vicious thing called ‘Drugs’ that is being more openly sold in hutment tenements by young touts acting as sales agents for the big fish. Bandra is no exception because here the market is lucrative with college students, sons and daughters of rich people, who try to ape the Western style of living. This menace is growing day by day and will one day reach a point of no return, when the young will become hopeless, take up to crime of stealing to buy drugs from peddlers, who are there at street corners always ready to sell their wares. In the present generation parents are busy working to make a living, without knowing what their children are doing. What a dangerous world we live in, no peace at all. Amar Singh

Will Patwardhan Park be sacrificed to a Parking Lot & Shopping Plaza? VALERIAN D’COSTA COMMUNITY REPORTER By definition a park is a public area of land with grass, trees, and other amenities, where people go to relax and enjoy themselves. To the common man, the park is a place where people come with their family, friends and loved ones, to relax, take a walk, play or workout. Patwardhan Park is one such park! Over the past few decades, many generations have enjoyed their time at the park. Today, this park is under threat by the very authorities that manage it. Zoru Bhathena, is an activist who has done extensive ground work on this matter, emphatically states that when there are unutilised parking spaces in the same area for more than 300 four wheelers, then why is BMC insisting on the underground parking space, below the park. He specifically pointed out that there is ample parking space in places such as - Taste of Punjab Mall, Starbucks Mall, KFC Mall, NM Medical Centre, Croma Mall, Suburbia/Shoppers Stop, and Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir and Sheila Raheja Auditorium. Sadly, the same is either lying unutilised or has been used for other commercial purposes. His question is – “Why is BMC not focussing on freeing up this existing unutilised parking space for the public?”

Will Patwardhan Park be sacrificed to a Parking Lot & Shopping Plaza? Continued from Page 6 An active leader in a Bandra-Khar ALM 144 (Advanced Locality Management) – Aftab Siddique, points out that Linking Road, 32nd Road and 24th Road are already extremely congested with dense population of licenced stalls, high pedestrian (shopper’s) traffic, and undis-

ciplined parking. This is worsened by the fact that all three roads are quite narrow and are already congested with heavy traffic flow throughout the day. She also points out that there is already a note from the traffic police department, which does not allow public parking in the area, considering the high traffic volume of vehicles and pedestrians, cou-

Some Salient Points of BMC’s Proposed Plan • The total area of Patwardhan Park is 14,685 sq.m. • The 3-level RCC structure is going to 2.2 m. above the ground level, in the centre of the park. So it is not actually underground. • 305 sq.m. of the park’s surface area is going to be used for bus parking. • 2,535 sq.m. of the underground area is going to be used for shops. • A further 765 sq.m. of the park’s surface area will be used for shops. pled with narrow roads.

parking spaces in the current area, why build new ones? • Will this project make the area more congested – in terms of vehicular and pedestrian traffic? • Will this project increase the already high noise and air pollution?

From a common man’s point of view, here are some genuine concerns. • Will the park retain its appeal as the ‘green’ park – to play, relax and workout? • Will the park continue to retain all its green cover? • Will we lose our natural rain catchment The bottom line is whether the authorities will heed these concerns and other area for good? • When there are existing unutilised concerns and resolve them!

Comically Yours with Denzil’s Pencil VALERIAN D’COSTA COMMUNITY REPORTER How would you like your wedding day to be remembered? For most of us, it would mean a huge celebration in the company of loved ones; us being impeccably dressed along with bridesmaids, best men & parents, a sumptuous buffet laid out along with some good music and plenty of dancing and, well, of course plenty of pictures to make memories out of one of the best days of our lives. More often than not, guests are given a memento as a remembrance of the significant day and, well, surely, you have plenty of these mementos lying in your showcase at home. In most cases, these mementos are lost in the midst of your own memories adorning the same showcase. How, then, can you remember someone else’s wedding day? Enter, Denzil Clement, a caricature artist. For the last four years now, he’s been creating memories eternal at weddings and all kinds of parties with his remarkable caricatures of guests. What’s really special is the fact that he’s able to paint you on paper in a matter of minutes! Seems unbelievable, doesn’t it? It is, until you see for yourself! Although Denzil has had the hand of an artist since his schooldays - he reminisces and even laughs at how his friends used to challenge him back in his

school-days to draw the ‘undrawable’ Mid-day mates & the admonishing he used to receive from his parents - he started out as a tattoo artist while in college; given the fad in the 2000s for tattoos and with shows like Miami Ink trending back then in the day, it seemed like a rewarding part-time job. It took him many years & a trip around the globe to realise that painting smiles on peoples’ faces was his calling. Starting off as a chef at a fivestar & later moving on to the cruise-liner, Denzil could never stop sketching in his free time. He would make subjects of whatever was within his vision; so much so a guest on the cruise-liner once mistook him for a professional and bought his painting! This led him to take up painting even more seriously and whenever the cruise would dock at a port, he would attract plenty of attention for his paintings, not to mention even buyers for his pieces of aesthetic art. Sitting in his studio where excited clients drop by to have their caricatures done, Denzil enjoys the look his subjects have on their faces on seeing the comic version of themselves, that too in colour – all done in less than a few minutes. “For me, the most important thing is to see the smile on people’s faces when they see their caricatures. No one knows what’s going on in another’s life and even if for a moment I can make

someone smile, I feel satisfied,” says Denzil, who is dyslexic and faced much resistance when he eventually decided to make art his living. A portrait taking the place right at the top in his studio,of a man hanging on to HOPE while others try to pull him down, depicts just that. Eventually, Denzil did call it quits from his job on the cruise-line as a chef and came back home to take up what he more than excelled at: sketching and painting caricatures. For the last four years now, Denzil has mastered the art of sketching caricatures: cartoon versions of real people but it was only recently that Denzil opened his own studio. While he isn’t busy drawing caricatures or designing witty, imaginative wedding invites, which take up most of his time, Denzil busies himself in his studio creating tattoos, which is another art he has mastered over the years since his college days. Although, he sounds a word of caution to tattoo lovers, “Most of the equipment available in the market is of cheap quality which tend to cause cancers and skin infections. While first-timers like to ignore the plain truth, for me, my client is my priority; hence, I use quality instruments to create a tattoo.” Having attended more than 400

events around the country as a caricature artist, Denzil has created a flutter in the art industry with his distinctive ability of conjuring an entire portrait of a person in a matter of just three to six minutes! He’s even working on approaching the Limca Book of Records for setting the record for painting the fastest caricatures. So impressive is he at his work that he’s become an instant attraction at weddings around the city, where guests line up to have their caricatures drawn. “Sometimes, the photographers clicking instant photos at weddings take longer to develop their images than the time taken by me to paint the same faces. It’s really joyful to see the smiles on the faces of people I draw,” exclaims Denzil. While you might remember your wedding day for its smorgasbord, music and regalia, your guests will only have to look at their own artistically and magically drawn caricatures to remember your memorable day that made theirs! Having Denzil paint his signature 3 to 6 minute caricatures of your guests and give them a lifetime memory costs 40,000 for a 3 hour event. You can buy caricatures on www.denzilart.com or call him on 9920647661

Float Away Your Stresses at Liquid Sanctuary Living in a city like Mumbai, where we’re constantly on the go, life can get really stressful, not just physically but even more so, mentally & emotionally. Sometimes a massage does the trick, some other times, a spa. And while these avenues to break free may help you rejuvenate physically, you may be left wanting mentally and emotionally. For the lives we live dealing with pressures from our work environment to our families to our own selves, it is only correct to give the brain enough time to rest, recover & recharge for the stresses of our daily schedules. At this point, it helps to know about Liquid Sanctuary’s Floatation Tanks. Yes, you heard it right! To put it in simpler terms, a floatation tank is similar to that of floating on the waters of the Dead Sea. With more than a thousand pounds of Epsom Salt – more commonly known as magnesium sulphate – dissolved in a pool of water warmed to the temperature of your skin, the solution helps you float effortlessly like the rubber duck in your bathtub. You may still be wondering what all this is about. Located in the bustling Bandra neighbourhood on the Pali Mala Road, Liquid Sanctuary is the solution to a host of your worries. Relatively new to the country, floatation tanks or sensory deprivation tanks, as Digant Joshi, owner of Liquid Sanctuary in Bandra, explains, ‘is a Restricted Environment

Stimulation Therapy (REST) which provides a buoyant zero-gravity feeling that helps you float effortlessly. There are plenty of restorative benefits which include stimulating the body’s own natural power of healing and regeneration. While physically it assists in reduction of fatigue, back pain, muscle soreness as well as stimulating injury recovery, the therapy is also known to alleviate stress, depression, insomnia & even asthma & Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).’ As far as your body is concerned, one may experience difficulty in immediately relaxing after getting into the tub. Once you let go of your head & neck & let

the water cocoon you, you won’t be able to differentiate when the water starts & your body ends, allowing you to reach a state of bliss. After a few minutes, your muscles will begin to completely release & any pressure on your spine & joints are totally alleviated, giving you that zero-gravity effect on the body. The benefits of floatation therapy are both anecdotal & recorded, but various studies have also shown that sensory deprivation does, measurably, reduce the body’s stress response, and the resultant deep relaxation & quieting of mental chatter is helpful with most stress-related illnesses & pain, from de-

pression & anxiety, through to arthritis, muscle soreness, and more significant injury rehabilitation. Puja Amin, who is a qualified yoga trainer herself, runs the Liquid Sanctuary along with her husband adds, “The sound-proof tank rooms have two varieties, one that makes you feel like you’re in the Amazon rainforest or the other that apes a quiet & serene beach atmosphere. Once you start your float, the lights turn off & the music that is played while you get comfortable slowly dissipates, leaving you in complete darkness with only your thoughts. Eventually, these slowly start to float away too, allowing some to experience deep states of meditation and relaxation.” At first, the float therapy may seem like an intense experience because we’re just not used to nothingness. But the reality is that now, more than ever, our brains are in need of this very phenomenon to allow time for ourselves to really rest & rejuvenate emotionally & mentally. Once floating becomes a regular part of your wellness regimen, the therapeutic benefits are compounded & you finally make room for inner healing. Do inquire about their monthly memberships and packages. Liquid Sanctuary 1st Floor, Dheeraj Arcade, Pali Naka, Bandra (West), Mumbai 400050 Call: 9920721114

EAT OUT

Loca Lucho: The Taste of Mexico Delivered to Your Doorstep Operating out of Carter Road in Bandra is a cloud kitchen that delivers Mexican inspired food to your doorstep. Loca Lucho is the newest addition to Bandra’s circuit of restaurants. Serving up burritos, burrito bowls, salad bowls & soft shell tacos, they believe in using only fresh and high-quality products. This Mission-Style Mexican delivery kitchen is a flagship brand of Jitasa Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. headed by Nisarg Doshi and Vivek Jhaveri. The menu has been curated and designed by Celebrity Chef Gracian D’souza. We tried their Mushroom Burrito, Chipotle Chicken Burrito, Grilled Chicken Burrito & Peri Peri Pork Burrito Bowl. The burritos were sumptuous & stuffed with fresh ingredients, just about sufficient for one person. The Mushroom Burrito was filled with Cilantro and Lime White Rice, Pinto Beans, Mushrooms, Charred Cherry Tomato Salsa, Pico De Gallo, Green Salsa Verde, Pickled Jalape-

nos, Fajitas, Sour Cream, Monterey Jack Cheese & Extra Loaded Guacamole. The Chipotle Chicken Burrito swaps the Pinto Beans & Mushrooms from the Mushroom Burrito for Black Beans & Chipotle Chicken. Take a bite of the burrito & what follows is an explosion of flavours in your mouth, each ingredient presenting itself to your taste buds, the delicate flavour of the Cilantro & Lime White Rice combined with the tangy Salsa and smooth Guacamole. The burritos were layered with a generous amount of cheese. We found the quantity of chicken in the Chipotle Chicken Burrito and Grilled Chicken Burrito to be a tad bit less. The Peri Peri Pork Burrito Bowl is made up of Brown Rice, Black Beans, Peri Peri Pulled Pork, Pineapple and Sage Salsa, Habanero Salsa, Pico De Gallo, Sour Cream, Monterey Jack Cheese & Guacamole. This bowl is a treat for those of you who love that extra bit of spice in their food. Ready

to tackle your taste buds & leave you with a fiery after taste, the Peri Peri Pork Burrito Bowl has a way of slightly confusing you as well. The Pineapple & Sage Salsa plays against the Peri Peri Pork by adding a burst of tangy sweetness to the spice. Once again, an explosion of flavours and satisfying amount of Peri Peri pulled pork makes this bowl worth a try. They offer a ‘Build Your Own Burrito’ concept where customers can make their own burritos or bowls by choosing ingredients, proteins & sauces. You can also create your own taco mash-ups from their wide range of ingredients & choices available. Loca Lucho is a delivery only kitchen. They deliver through online food ordering platforms such as Zomato, Swiggy, Scootsy (upto BKC and Juhu) and UberEats. So if you’re craving some authentic Mexican food, Loca Lucho is just a call away. You can reach them on 022 2600 4546 or 9833119010

Chaos at Bandra’s Chinchpokli Road Slums The TOI of October 27, 2018 reports “Burglars strike at three houses…” and states that burglars struck at three houses on Chinchpokli Road during the night of October 26, 2018. These are actually sheds and part of the Chinchpokli slums. Chinchpokli Road is one of the bylanes connecting Hill Road with the Bandra Town Market. A white line has been painted from north to south, perhaps indicating that the east side is for parking three & four-wheelers behind which the drivers of these vehicles urinate & even defecate, most unhygienic for the residents. West of the white line is for haphazard parking of two-wheelers provided to certain slum residents along with mob phones to summon known vagrants of the wadi for their experienced vandalism. At the entrance of the road is the Bata show room and its outside walls are occupied by the notorious hawkers all of a tribe. Next in line is a “No Parking” sign where every evenings two-wheelers jostle for parking space right in front of the sign board?

Midway is a kind of shack where vagrants sit and drink at night breaking bottles on the road, quarrelling loudly and disturbing the neighbourhood. Across this is an open ground where all kinds of functions are held with blaring speakers even beyond the deadline, much to the annoyance of the entire neighbourhood. Irwin Almeida
