At Crown Vet, your Pet is their Passion

Mr. Pratapsinh Gaekwad - The brainchild behind Crown Vet It was not until long ago that pet owners in and around Bandra had to run from pillar to post to get quality treatment for the pets in their family. For instance, in what seemed to be an anxious ordeal, you had to consult a vet at one place, get tests done at another and purchase medication from yet another place. It became even more stressful when that particular medication wasn’t available. But not anymore! Crown Vet, a veterinary clinic in Khar, has eliminated much of the struggle. Located just before the Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana (off S.V. Road), the clinic is well-presented and a real encouragement for more people to have pets. Established in 2016, Crown Vet is a holistic state-ofthe-art pet care clinic catering primarily to canines and felines with consultation, vaccination, diagnostics and medical supplies all under one roof.

Pet owners now have the opportunity to spend time with a well trained and experienced vet where they can discuss their case at length in a well-equipped consultation room. Since consultations are based on prior appointment, pets and their owners are extended quality and seamless service without having to worry about time constraints. Besides, the clinic also welcomes you with a sterile, hygienic and comfortable reception and waiting area where you can pick up toys, leashes and even foods for your pet which make the usually dreadful experience of visiting a vet, a fun-filled one. For more complicated medical treatments and surgeries, pet owners have the benefit of consultation with surgeons at its state-of-the-art Mahalaxmi clinic which is equipped with imaging and laboratory infrastructure as also overnight pet care.

The in-house Retail section has a range of health products, toys and foods Says Sheroy Wadia, operations head, “The systems and processes allow client histories and previous client communications to be clearly shared between the consulting vets in Khar and the surgery vets at the Mahalaxmi clinic. We pride ourselves in recording every patient treatment properly in our system. This ensures that every vet viewing the case knows exactly what treatment has been given before deciding on the next course of action.” Beside consulting a vet here, the clinic at Khar also provides for administering vaccinations for your pet, IV fluid therapy, microchipping and even specialist puppy appointments for new pet owners to pick up the hows and whats of parenting their new family member. Given Mumbai’s not-so-healthy environment, pets are usually prone to skin infections and the medicated bath at Crown Vet has become

the solution for many a pet owner to keep their pets free of this ailment. With greater awareness on the long-term health benefits of routine procedures such as neutering and dental clean-ups as also nail clips and ear cleans, the well-experienced vets at Crown Vet make the event for the pets a comfortable one in a pure and hygienic environment. The clinic is also stocked with essential medication that can be purchased over the counter atits in-house pharmacy which is manned by a licensed pharmacist. This gives pet owners the convenience and much-needed relief of not having to search for specialist pharmacies that stock veterinary products. Mr Vicckey Goswami, who brought his pet here for consultation was more than satisfied with his experience, exclaiming, “Thank you for being brilliant at what you do. Fantastic people, space and everything else that comes with it.” Promoter Pratapsinh Gaekwad, an animal-lover himself sums it up saying, “The new Khar clinic was set up with the intention of being closer to our customers in Bandra, Khar, Santa Cruz and Juhu. This ensures a seamless and stress-free visit for pets and their owners. We aim to deliver a high quality veterinary care experience through a team of well-trained veterinarians backed by state of the art infrastructure and best practice standards. We are really pleased with the positive response we’ve received from both pets as well as their owners. ” All in all, the world-class care you’ve always wanted for your pet is finally here. Are we living in an undeclared ‘Emergency’? The writing is on the wall - the evidence is everywhere - lips are sealed with fear & this had to have an outburst somewhere, at some time soon. With print mainstream media muzzled by the powers-that-be, activists & common people have taken to social media in a big way - to express their pent up feelings. The result were several simultaneous global protests #NotInMyName & in Mumbai, it was held, despite torrential rain, on Carter road promenade on 28th June 2017 – many holding placards describing burning issues facing our country. The mob killings, lynchings, beatings & rape all over India, with alleged government silence; have created a weird fear, hanging in the air. Imagine, killing over what food we eat? Speaking to several protesters, the common emotional message was ‘as clear as mud’. However, the common words were: “Are we living in an undeclared ‘Emergency’?” Shahid Shaikh (real name withheld) boldly told us, “The government should be doing their job – i.e. seeing that law and order is maintained throughout India. Crime perpetrators need to be brought to book - without any lame excuses. Stop the killings, or kill me.” Another angry protester, Hema Kaur (real name withheld) said, “All over India, we now have the law of the

jungle – might is right. Mobs rule - according to their whims & fancies. Why is everyone scared? Is the government blind? We now are seeing all this in the news. Tomorrow it could be you or me!” To view what happened, visit youtube.com/bandrabuzz The protesters kept coming from all directions to the amphitheatre - opp. CCD and

the atmosphere was getting charged with emotions. As the protest tempo grew, a group started singing patriotic songs, with others joining in. Then, more protesters joined in - with a gusto that reached a crescendo just before the dark clouds burst with a heavy downpour; dispersing the huddled crowd, who protested about the

shameful situation that Indians are witnessing today. They proudly proclaimed, that this was ‘#NotInMyName’. This was show of solidarity, by concerned citizens, at its best – while the world viewed and got insights about what is really happening all over India. Bandra Buzz Team

Every year AWMTC provides students with the opportunity of competing and displaying their musical talents on a world class stage. The event has many categories in which the participants can display their talents and musical inclinations. Ensemble involves many voices joining in to form one single voice, groove or song. Instrumental displays the passionate musician who plays an instrument to the best of his or her abilities. Band enables synchronization of instruments and voices to create music which is energetic and lively enough to get the audience off their seats and dancing. The efforts of the managing committee of the event also play a crucial part in existence of the event. The managing team includes departments such as marketing, public relations, finance, hospitality, security, administration, creatives, entertainment, fillers, tech and photography. This year we have various sponsors including Myles: Self drive as our mobile partner, Union Bank as our banking partner, Furtados as our music partner and many more. Help your broken heart heal Have you lately gone through a break up? Regardless of whether you wanted to break up or not – whether it was a sudden shock or it was seen coming slowly but surely; you lost a love one once treasured and now coming out of the pain, guilt, grief and bitterness, is not easy. In spite of all the negative emotions, easy said than done, this is the time to think rationally from your mind more than your heart to heal your life. It is not worth taking drastic steps to end one’s life for anyone in the world. No one is worth that precious life of yours. The main step is to focus on your heart and healing. Let go: Do not dwell on the past. Accept it graciously for what it is right now. Look at the optimistic side – it could have been worst, messier. Accept what is happening and what you’re feeling and focus on the positive things you have in your present moment.

Brilliant Book by a Bandra Family Books are normally written by one or at the two most by two authors. But this book you will read about today is truly a family effort, stretching across generations and across geographies. A unique book, authored by a unique family, having roots in Goa as well as Bandra, this book is a joy to read. So let’s look at this amazing effort in detail.

above that uplifted the protagonist Milly Pereira, who has served as a teacher and now a counsellor at St. Stanislaus School, Bandra for almost 29 years, transforming her from a shy introvert to an emboldened woman of strength. It will fill you with a sense of awe and make you believe again that miracles happen even today & that there are simply no coincidences.

Could you please, in your own words, tell our readers a about The Merry Tongue? It’s a labour of love really. It is a true life story. It’s a very light read in a conversational, narrative style, set in Bombay from the 1940’s onwards with vintage B&W photographs, descriptive sketches & reflections woven into it that is sure to take readers down memory lane, offering nostalgic anecdotes that will rekindle their love for the simple joys of growing up as a Goan immigrant in this vibrant city of yore. It’s a homely, heart-warming, memoir featuring stories on love and romance, marriage, shippy and nomadic adventures, the pros of moving to Bandra, the ups and downs with a special emphasis on dealing with the loss of a loved one through simplistic faith, trust and surrender. Though it’s from a Christian woman’s perspective, the experiences & emotions shared are universal & relatable. It’s a story of gradual metamorphosis; of spiritual evolution and growth. The book is filled with inspirational testimonies of miracles and signs from

What are the challenges you faced in writing this book? Writing this book in first person yet sharing the thoughts, insights and reflections of my mother was challenging as I wanted her opinions, emotions and learnings to be reflected as authentically as possible yet be able to amalgamate my own voice and after thoughts in each chapter without losing the essence and personality of the main protagonist. For a large part of the book, I was relying on my memory of first hand testimonies I witnessed or that were related to me over the years. The first edition of ‘The Merry Tongue’ was a surprise gift for my mum for her landmark 70th birthday in 2015. I had completed only half the book and it was lying incomplete all those years. One month prior to the date I rushed to have the latter half completed just in the nick of time. She was simply astounded when she unveiled her gift and saw her name in print on the cover. It truly was the best birthday gift she had ever received and it brought tears of joy

to her eyes. Quite a few expressed interest to read the book so we have since edited it for publication. I ventured into self-publishing. It has been yet another challenge; learning the ropes of the publishing world from scratch. I must say indie authors are changing the face of publishing and disrupting the norms in a good way. You certainly don’t have to wait around for a traditional publisher and you can now feel empowered to get your book out there in perhaps a shorter time frame, with equal if not a wider reach and what’s better is that you’re in full control and that to me is what was the most gratifying and fulfilling. How do you foresee this book as a film, and who would you like having to play the main role? Wow! The very thought of this question makes me happy - I’d simply love for The Merry Tongue to be made into a film. That’d be simply awesome! That would mean reaching an even wider audience and the stories truly coming alive on the big screen. I could see some of the miraculous signs and testimonies of faith inspiring viewers especially women. It has all the makings of a movie - a strong protagonist, depictions of the past, adventures at sea, love and romance, twists and turns, tragedy & inspirational accounts of strength. I’d love for my Sister Rozzlin (YouTuber portraying the popular Bandra Aunty Maggy and Milly) to play the main role. She certainly looks a lot like mum when she was young and who better than her own flesh and blood to play the lead. She’d know and feel the part and emotions like no other. What do you think is so distinctive and appealing about Goan life that it attracts so many people from around the globe? The Merry Tongue has beautiful descriptions of our homeland Goa, its cuisine, culture, susegaad people, its landscapes and beaches and the relaxed lifestyle it offers. I think Goa is the perfect getaway from the hectic city life. It’s like time stands still and you’re able to reconnect with a dormant side of you that never surfaces otherwise. It’s idyllic, picturesque, warm and peaceful. People from across the globe love it because it offers everything you look for

in a holiday and there’s something for everyone - white sandy beaches, sun, good food, night life, music, serenity, peace, history, culture, tradition & very friendly and warm local people. What would you say are the similarities and differences between Bandra life and Goan life, considering that you have experienced them both? Bandra has changed a lot in recent times but when I left Bandra in 2006 it was still fabulous. It hasn’t earned the title of Queen of the suburbs for nothing you know! It has the best kept promenades facing the coastline & offers quaint eclectic experiences with by lanes, bazaar roads & the few cottages left still reminding us of the glory days & connecting us back to our roots in Goa. It has Jazz festivals & Zonal singing competitions & an unmatched vibrancy & Buzz that’s impossible to replicate elsewhere. The same way Goa has that special something that draws people back time & again - Once a Bandraite always one forever. You can take a Bandraite out of Bandra but you’ll never be able to take Bandra out of a Bandraite and the same goes for Goans who’ve experienced the charm of Goa. Our community adds to the cultural ethos of both places and gives it that typical appeal. Could you please enumerate one incident from this book which you feel could be termed its defining feature? The moment of loss is indeed the most gripping incident in The Merry Tongue & the overwhelming positivity, faith and ultimate surrender that ensues with miracles & signs from above that uplift the grief stricken protagonist from the depths of sorrow and anguish, renewing and transforming her from a nondescript, tonguetied introverted grounded ‘caterpillar’ to a Merry Tongued ‘butterfly’ with vibrant wings to fly forth is the book’s defining feature. It reinforces that with faith, trust and a strong belief we can indeed move mountains and that we are all just instruments waiting to be tuned so that the almighty ‘maestro’ can play his masterpiece through us. This is the message of the book. Cyrus Gonda

The Lowdown on Bandra Football League Bandra’s biggest football league played at the famous late Dr. Norman Lewis (Supari Talao) Municipal ground, the Bandra Football League kick started on 2nd July 2017! The league keeps football lovers’ young and old busy, entertained & super happy. The league was initiated by the Bandra West Football Association, comprising of local ex-footballers & enthusiast like Mr Hugh Fernandes, Mr Henry Picado, Mr Sajid Khan, Mr Morgan Gonsalves, Mr Sydney Alexander & Mr Francis Rodrigues. All of them work on purely out of love and receive no remuneration for the same. However there are several influential lovers of the game, who’s patronage helps the show go on. The league is being held under the auspices of the Mumbai District Football Association. The Premier League (comprising of 16 teams) and Division 1 will play on a League cum knockout basis. They have a very strict registration process, and only players who are registered with BWFA and

are currently residing in Bandra for over a year are eligible to play in the League. They also have a women’s league which is open to girls from across Mumbai. This year there is a new introduction, the Under 10 League, which will kick off on 23rd July. Over the next few editions, we’ll introduce the Committee Members of the BWFA, Premier League teams as well as some of the Division 1 teams, so that you get to know them better. A.K. Chimbai Sports Club (Premier League): This team was born out of the sheer love and passion for the game by its founder the late Mr. Altaf Khan, who was a diehard football fan. Mr. Khan owned a cycle shop in Chimbai and was so passionate about the sport, that whenever there was a game, he would find someone to look after his shop and go to watch the game. It was this zeal that drove him to form A.K.

Athletico Bandra alongside their captain Jonathan Pereira Chimbai. He would ensure that the team participated in almost every tournament that was organised in and around Bandra. While most of their players have been and are from Chimbai, this year the team has expanded and has associated with 4-5 new players. They are coached and managed with dedication by the renowned Mr. Leo Dharmai, a local veteran, stalwart sportsman of Bandra and a dear friend of Mr. Khan. The current team is captained by Roosevelt Fernandes. You can catch them practicing and perfecting their skills every alternate evening of the week at the St. Andrews School Grounds. Rangers Football Club (Division 1): For the Rangers, football is a game which they all adored from their hearts, every free kicks and goals got them to think how it could be done better. Unfortunately all their football fanatics were lost with their respective job and work that never gave them the time to get back to the game. But as you know, if a job takes you out of it, it also gives you enough stress to get you back to it. They all play against each other at many Sunday turf games, that’s when they decided that the same aggression and passion could be put together to play against other opponents in the Bandra

league. Captained by Arnold D’Silva, these boys mean business, better watch out for them! Athletico Bandra (Premier League): Formed in 2007 by football enthusiast Mr. Sanjay Raja, this team completes 10 years this year. Sanjay always knew and believed that even if he wasn’t playing for any team he would definitely start his own team. Football has always been his passion! He has since played with them but mostly manages them. He has also given a lot of credit to the wives and girlfriends of his team mates, for being patient and supportive and standing by their partners, through all the practice sessions and the games. The team has a mix of different ages from 19 to 40. Athletico Football Academy has also started their very own soccer academy for kids from 5 years to 17 years. The team has been captained by Jonathan Pereira for the last 4 seasons. They are a close knit team and have had more or less the same side for the last 5 years. Although they have a lot of working members, they have made sure they practice every Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays after work. Continued on Page 7 >>

And that definitely worked because today they have 4 teams just from Chimbai, with approx. 50 boys playing and at least 10 making it big. Chimbai Sports Club (Premier League): Established in the 1960s, the boys of the village formed the Chimbai team to get a chance to play together every weekend as well as to give the village as well as the local boys an opportunity to play as the other teams used to call players from outside Bandra by faking ration cards, which wasn’t a big deal. Another important reason is that they wanted to give the children an opportunity to take up any kind of sport instead of the present day vices.

Rodney brushed aside those responses and replied “Chimbai Boys, you see the Chimbai Boys running to play on the grounds.” Somland Sports Club (Premier League): From a humble beginning in the by lanes of Bandra in a small lane named Somnath

lane, the late Mr. Nicholas Fernandes and Mr. John Dias founded Somlands Sports Club in 1964 with aim to convert and channelize the surplus youthful energy that was prominent in the locality. With no sponsors to fund the team since its inception the club relied on the goodwill of its well-wishers to promote itself. A lot of hard work, perseverance and dedication between the founders and the players of yesteryears saw a bunch of talented and dedicated players put together a team to participate in various tournaments. While most of the team players are from the locality known as Somnath lane the team also would accommodate friends who were willing to lend their talent to the club as players as well as expertise to excel. The Club is now managed by Johan Dharmai and Anthony Mathai while the responsibility of captaincy has been rested on the able shoulders of Masood Munshi. Even to this day the team has kept to its core principles of providing an opportunity to home bred talent as well as providing opportunities to every person who would like to be a part of this club. Bandra schools involved in ‘Environment saving activities’ An initiative of the BMC & Bhamla Foundation to imbibe this noble cause in our youth An initiative to get the youth involved in ‘environment saving activities’, was taken forward by the Bhamla Foundation & the BMC; by getting several Bandra Schools to participate on World Forest Day - on 7th June 2017 at St. Stanislaus School Hall. Principals of, Apostolic Carmel Convent, Duruelo Convent, Anjuman-I-Islam’s Girls School, St. Joseph Convent and the host St. Stanislaus High School, Bandra; along with student representation, gathered to understand the environment messages from those who matter. Speaking on our environment, “Bandra Girl”, Pooja Bhatt told the audience Auxilium Convent that if we believe that this earth is a gift from God, and we are trustees or stewards – then it is our duty to protect this gift given to us and leave it in a better condition than when we found it. We need to walk our talk. Speaking to a packed audience of students, she told them that each one could make a huge difference. So, “be the change” – plant more saplings, that will be trees in the near future. Then, Pooja got singer Shaan to sing the Stanislaus School Anthem, with active participation from the audience. Asif Bhamla spoke how the state government decided this year, to take ‘Forest Day’ to new enhancements, by planning to plant 4 crore trees across Maharashtra. On behalf of Bhamla Foundation, Bandra ALMs & the BMC; he thanked Fr. Frazier, Fr. Andrew, Principal Anna Correa, H-West Ward AMC –Sharad Ughade, Shaan, Pooja Bhatt, Wajid, Mittal & others for taking time out to encourage our youth to take

‘environment saving’ steps. He elaborated that the main motto of Bhamla Foundation was ‘Zero Garbage’ – done by separating wet & dry garbage & composting it, with the help of local resident associations. This ensures cleanliness. Also, he spoke about the need for each one of us to save water – which is a scarce resource. Students in the audience pledged to do their bit – with a show of hands. Earlier, Fr. Frazier told Bandra Buzz how St. Stanislaus School premises had fitted solar panels to reduce their electricity bills (they have received zero charges bill from their Electricity Power Provider) and simultaneously conserve our environment, by using clean energy. He further told us, that this also has great educational value, as students realise the value of reducing our carbon footprint & contributing towards the global issue of climate change – at a young age. This was followed by a tree planting session at the Stanislaus background, led by Pooja Bhatt and other celebrities. After this all participating school groups went marching along Hill Road, to Carmel Convent to plant some saplings there and then to St. Joseph Convent for some more planting of saplings – spreading awareness to others by placard messages, with the theme of ‘Save Our Environment’. All in all, this was an excellent way of imbibing the importance of saving our environment, keeping our surrounding clean and green, reducing our carbon footprint and climate change. Jairam Gaikwad

The Andrean Zonals: Memories through the Years St. Andrew’s Zonal Talent Contest. A programme carefully curated and cultivated through the years, a stage for men, women and children to showcase their talent and skill. Over the years, the Andrean Zonals has grown and given rise to numerous professional actors, directors and singers, leaving each and every person who has been part of it with beautiful memories and precious moments. With humble beginnings from the Bosco hall to a much larger auditorium, the Zonals gives everyone a chance to portray their talent and passion. Msgr. Nereus Rodrigues, the curator of the Andrean Zonals, worked along with a couple of other people from the Parish in 1953 and watched his brainchild grow larger with each passing year. What started off as the Andrean Zonal Talent Contest, with the demarcation of different zones each year, has now grown to become the St. Andrews All Bandra Parish Talent Contest. Initially, singing and theatre were the two main attractions; now, as times have changed, the Zonals have evolved to include performances such as elocution, poster painting, choir singing, instrumental sets and dancing. The upcoming, 62nd edition of the Andrean Zonals includes a wide range of performances and a whole lot of fun. As a small token, we asked certain people who have been closely associated with the Zonals for a few words about their journey through, and with the Andrean Zonals. Kenneth Fernandes and his brother, Ashley, participated and accompanied several contestants over the years. Kenneth has taken a break from the Zonals to give other people a chance to showcase their talent. “If you want to develop talent, it’s an excellent place to begin. The youth and everyone else have a chance to prove themselves. For me, it’s been a really nice journey”, says Kenneth. Brian Tellis journey has been a two-fold journey, as a participant and now, organizing it. “It’s been fabulous”, says Brian, “the

Zonals are something that I owe a lot to. Besides the joy of taking part and competing it has also helped me hone my skills.” He feels it is now time to give back and is very happily involved in helping organize the Zonals and grow it. During his early teenage years as a participant, he fondly remembers the year he had great results in the Zonals which led to him being noticed and cast in the musical, Grease. As an organizer, one of the landmark moments was the year the Zonals was made an All Bandra Inter-Parish Talent Contest. “It has now evolved from a single Parish to about 7 or 8 Parishes in Bandra, it has evolved from just music and theatre to dance and elocution, through the years. It has been a wonderful and happy growth”, says Brian. Annabelle Ferro believes the Zonals is a great learning and experimental ground since there is a great stage, great production values and a very enthusiastic audience. This makes it a great package for experimenting with theatre. “My heart lies in local theatre and you can’t experiment much with local theatre if you’re doing a commercial show. It’s been a fun journey to experiment and to see your live audience reacting to what you have created; that has given me the greatest joy”, says Annabelle. For her, working with young people has been a highlight, “They are so open, to enter your world, understand it and co-operate with you in theatre. That was what I absolutely enjoyed, working with them. Whenever I do a play, I’m never backstage. I’m always seated with the audience watching their reactions and expressions; it’s a different kind of feeling watching people react to what I’ve envisioned in my head.” Another source of immense happiness is watching her work translated from paper to stage. All that she visualizes in her head, watching these young people take it to another level when they perform on stage, gives her a lot of joy. “It’s like; someone has taken what you’ve written on a piece of paper and breathed life into it. That has given me so much happiness

and this is possible only if you do local theatre”, says Annabelle. Sharon Van’Drine feels the Zonals is a very, very good platform to showcase young talent and the categories included, are excellent. The thought of incorporating all the other Parishes is a very good thing and can give rise to more talent. Denzil Smith has many fond memories of the Zonals, calling it a great platform for encouraging new talent & an excellent showcase for us locals, of Bandra. The Zonals instills a feeling of community & camaraderie amongst everybody, along with teamwork as long as the competition is healthy. He says, “It’s a great platform, a wonderful platform I think, since a lot of talent gets noticed there. People, from a very young age or even older, can display their talent.” One of the fond memories he has, is being the director, of a play which they won. “It was a lot of fun. There was a lot of jubilation, celebration & a beautiful sense of team spirit was fostered”, Denzil reminisces. Daniel D’souza started off with the Zonals as a young boy, at the age of 16. “It was a great platform to start off with. Being young and enthusiastic, I tried my hand at everything, including directing, lights, sounds, costumes and acting. Basically, everything”, says Daniel. His first experience of theatre was all comprehensive and his

learning curve was sharp, at the young age of 16. “The other amazing thing about the Zonals is that you get to do theatre and try out these different things at St. Andrews Auditorium, a space that has some of the best technical equipment in the city. Being able to work at that kind of a level was a great learning experience for me.” The high point for Daniel was producing his first play and winning a number of awards that year on his first attempt. He also loved working with different zones. Samantha Edwards began her journey with the Zonals at the tender age of five. “The Andrean Zonals is an excellent platform for people to perform. It’s a fabulous stage and provides an opportunity for people to showcase their talent and passion”, she says. Apart from the numerous and wonderful memories, a certain one that stands out is the year she performed at the Zonals and scored a perfect 10 on 10, from all the judges. “The Zonals, now, include elocution and other competitions apart from theatre and singing, which is so much better”, says Samantha, “the Zonals helped me hone my skills and talent.” The St. Andrews All Bandra Zonal Talent Contest, held each year, is holding its 62nd presentation this year. Kicking off, on the 13th of August and followed up on the 20th of August, are the Music contests (for all age groups) which include Duets & Quartets & Choral groups. On Sunday, the 27th of August, the Elocution and Dance Contests begin, which include Solo and Group categories. On a bright and cheerful note, the 2nd and 3rd of September (Saturday and Sunday), Dramatics and theatre bring the Zonals to an end; for this year. Oh, for all you creative people out there, a poster competition awaits! The theme for the poster competition is ‘A Melting Pot of Talent’. So, turn up as a participant or get comfy in your seat as part of the audience; either way, there’s a whole new level of fun and camaraderie that awaits you. The Bhookha Beirdo might just become your new favourite place to hangout! Global fusion seems to be the raging trend in the food industry today. However this newly opened The Bhookha Beirdo, travel themed cafe at Pali Mala begs to differ. Started by two fitness & travel enthusiasts, Gitanjali Tandon, the cafe’s has something for everyone from every corner of the world in their true authentic styles. The owners contrasting tastes and lifestyle reflect greatly on the menu. While Gitanjali is a vegetarian, Anurag Rane is a complete ‘carnivore’ as his co-owner likes to call him. From a vegetable paella to a juicy stake, beirdo and weirdo DEATH BY PORK

doesn’t leave you disappointed. We tried the super food salad which lived up to its name. Hidden beneath a warm blanket of carefully blanched lettuce and dil lay a assortment of nuts and quinoa. The bowl of goodness was dressed in a lemony vinegret. After starting our meal on a healthy note, we decided to go for some comfort food and what better than fish and chips. And we have to say it did transport us to the cozy by lanes of Britain. We then went on to try another speciality on the menu, Geet’s Chicken Parma, a grilled chicken dish with a generous lather of a tomato based sauce and vegetables on the side. Even as the delicious food kept us company, the cozy ambience and the friendly vibe added to

the experience. If you are a travel enthusiast and a foodie looking for a new place to hangout, Beirdo and Weirdo might just be the place for you.

Power of make-up - Smokey and Neutral Eye Transformations with Minelli Coelho For a while now, the Internet has been abuzz over one predominant topic in the world of beauty, the “power of make-up”. Beauty experts have flooded social media with before-and-after posts that have stunned us as much as they have opened our eyes to what make-up can achieve. In the vanguard of this space is the uber popular video-sharing site, YouTube; the platform has oodles of ‘how to’ and ‘power of makeup’ videos, and some of the most sought-after among these include eye make-up tutorials, especially the timeless smokey eye and neutral looks. So, Bandra Buzz got together with YouTuber and Bandra girl Minelli Coelho, to show you how transformative smokey and neutral eye make-up can be. Having done the comprehensive Pro Make-Up course from the Mumbai-based Fat Mu Academy, Loca MiCo gives one-onone make-up lessons, and is a bridal and glam make-up artist & avid YouTube creator, raking in thousands of views for her beginner & cost-effective video tutorials; she even works her magic for photo- and web-based shoots. Now, she’s taking the expertise she serves up on her Make-Up by Loca MiCo YouTube channel & is bringing it to Bandra Buzz. So, here’s a step-by-step look at how MiCo crafts a neutral eye and an unconventional smokey eye on fellow Bandraite Samantha Pais. THE NEUTRAL EYE Perfect for daily wear and even to rock that date or ladies’ night out, here’s how to work that neutral eye. Step 1 - Create an even base on your lid with any liquid or creambased foundation that matches

your skin tone. This can be done using your finger. Then powder to hold the base steady. Step 2 - Using Maybelline’s Color Sensational Diamond Eye Shadow - Topaz Gold, apply a light champagne shade for your whole lid. This can once again be done using your finger. Step 3 - Working in the outer corner of your eye, in a V shape, blend in a touch of the darkest shade from the above palette, using the Colorbar Emphaseyes eye blending brush. Step 4 - With Maybelline’s Hyper Glossy or Hyper Matte liquid liner, line your upper lid with a gentle winged tip. Step 5 - Complete the look with any washable mascara. Hack: To curl your lashes sans a curler, take your mascara wand (ensure it’s a round one for maximum effect) and first work with downward strokes while your eyes are half shut. Then open your eyes a little more and work with upward strokes, wiggling slightly to prevent clumping.

Minelli Coelho crafts a neutral eye & an unconventional smokey eye on Samantha THE UNCONVENTIONAL SMOKEY EYE The make-up equivalent of the musthave little black dress, the ever dramatic smokey eye gets flirty with a pop of pink. And here’s how you can get the look. Step 1 - Follow step 1 of the neutral eye with application of black kohl in a thick line on your upper lid, just above your lashes. Step 2 - Using the Colorbar Emphaseyes eye blending brush, once again, use the darkest shade from the same eye shadow palette, and blend this with the kohl. Step 3 - Now, using shade 28 by P.A.C. (Professional Artist Cosmetics), work into your crease; this helps provide a blended and airbrushed gradient. Also, use your champagne shade just below your brow to create definition.

Step 4 - For the flirty twist in the look, add a touch of champagne pink from the Rose Quartz Pink variant of the Maybelline New York Color Sensational Diamond Eye Shadow in the inner corner of your eye. You can alternatively use any other shade of pink you have, or a champagne shade from your Maybelline palette. Step 5 - Finish by applying kajal in your waterline and working some mascara onto your lashes. Hack: Add a touch of drama to this gorgeous look, with lashes by P.A.C. You can also subscribe to her YouTube channel on Make-Up by Loca MiCo/Minelli Coel for more make-up tips. Jeanona Dias

Letters to the Editor CATHOLIC SABHA FIRES SALVO Mumbai Honourable HC Justices Oka and Kankanadi have found the list of BMC categories of denoting A and B for illegal shrines as being erroneous which was pointed out to them in a writ petition filed by the Catholic Sabha. They have asked BMC for replies and clarification on the same matter. This in itself shows that the august body has erred in its judgment due to its filmsy method of categorisation. When the two crosses at Nandi Lane and Chapel Road were marked for demolition by BMC, the Catholic Sabha rightly pointed out the mistake of designating it as Category B when it should have been Category A. By this act of filing a writ petition in the HC, the Catholic Sabha has saved two crosses from virtual demolition. TOI reported that a cross in Kurla was also demarcated for demolition without actually verifying facts by the committee. The demolition squad went there to carry out its work but were stopped because that land belonged to the Railways and BMC had no authority to step in. How can such mistakes be tolerated? Isn't there a system of checks and balances? Why is the BMC so lax and careless in its methodology of work? Does it always require a court ruling to straighten things out? The Corporation has a Commissioner, a Senior IAS officer with umpteen years of experience, appointed by the state government to foresee these things that his employees do not make mistakes and cause harm to the sentiments of the very society it serves. If the same mistake was committed on a Muslim shrine, BMC would have gone up in flames. That much is 100% sure. What can we summarize from these unpleasant situations? One, is that Catholic Sabha's timely intervention has put a spoke in the wheel. That the Catholic community has found a saviour who can fight back & face the challenges in a honourable manner, so that in future those wanting to take the community for granted will have to think twice. The Catholic Sabha should ever be ready armed with cudgels to strike back & protect properties that belong to the Church. Amar Singh CEREMONIAL POSTS BMC Mayor pulls up H Ward West Officer for demolition of illegal stalls on Linking Road manned by hawkers. They have become a perennial nuisance to pedestrians and motorists even on Hill and Bazaar roads. There is a constable who walks around with a long stick on Hill Road to shoo away hawkers and make way for people to walk during peak hours. This is only to show the public how much our guardians of law care for the well fare of the society. This story is very old and perhaps has appeared many times in newspapers. But this time BMC Mayor has gone beyond his limits. At times he forgets he is the Honourable Mayor holding a "ceremonial" post and his job is to maintain discipline in the municipal assembly between various political parties whose members are

our elected representatives. His job is not to interfere with the working of the BMC for which there is an appointed Commissioner. Pulling up an official for doing his duty shows lack of judgment. There is also the case of Bollywood celebrities approaching the Mayor for assistance in removal of a urinal at Bandstand. The Mayor should not entertain such audience and make undue promises to stall work of the Corporation. As before the party to which he belongs has strongly defended the Mayor and was soon on its feet to hush matters up before the media blows it all over as it happened in the 'Ravindra Gaikwad affair'. By the time BB comes out with its next issue, the Presidential poll will be over. Why the hype over such an election when it has nothing to do with common man? As the President's post is ceremonial, why are our political parties making a drama about it and playing to the gallery of the media. The President does not make policies that affect people, education, health and housing. He reads a well scripted speech on Republic Day, telling the nation to show religious tolerance, enhance girl education - good for TV cameras and press. The President doesn't rule the country, but seasoned politicians do, who know the pulse of the nation and how to manipulate promises and turn them into money-spinning ideas. In three years we have seen that paying 2% cess tax for Swachh Bharat, was another way of collecting money when there are still reports of deaths from dengue and H1N1 Flu. So why this wild frenzy to win Presidential poll? The answer is keep masses occupied with winning streak started with ruling party mauling opposition in 2014 general election. After electoral losses in Delhi & Bihar, they got wheels back on track. Their biggest challenge was winning UP by hook or by crook, so it would be cake walk for Prez poll. And that they achieved most unexpectedly by a huge margin. AAP and BSP cried foul blaming their defeat on tampered EVM's. And they are right, for who can trust political parties hungry for power? Bring back ballot papers, a sure proof of voting pattern, they screamed. None of the exit polls and gurus from the media had predicted a 324 seat win, yet they did, leaving the opposition in tatters and stone dead. After that thumping win in UP, the ruling party managed to gain a substantial lead in electoral collegium that will vote for their choice of the next President. They have sought support from alliance partners and sealed the deal with AIADMK to reach a magical figure of 63%, leaving the opposition of 17 parties with a no win situation. So all this media hype was to bolster the ruling party from top to the grass roots to keep the winning streak on full throttle with all eyes for the next general election due in 2019. Amar Singh

JULY 2017 13

Moody Monsoons Dear Reader, July is when we shift to second gear, with wild, wet & whacky scenes all around us. Bandra’s shopping scenario gets interestingly innovative, the romantic rains creating conducive situations for closer encounters. One moment, Hill Road & Linking Road is hot, bright & dry – when winds & dark clouds come suddenly to lower temperatures and you need to jump over puddles, to reach your destination. Yet, activities will continue. All over India, GST will get rolled out, this July. This system is supposed to simplify multiple inter-state taxes. The implications will be known in a few months, when implementation is experienced by us. Closer to home, football tournaments have commenced – adding sporting excitement and a healthy energy outlet to our youth. At campuses, students are adjusting to their new surroundings – from a lower to a higher class, school to college or from college to their first job or living their dreams as an entrepreneur, all set to make a major difference, starting their own business. Event Managers are busy bagging orders for upcoming weddings & other events that are usually post October. Wet weekend picnics with green surroundings, at resorts around the city are in planning stage. And yes, talent contest practices have begun.

However, health challenges heighten in this season, especially around areas that are not rain-ready. Low lying areas get flooded and garbage heaps breeds disease and even death. At the end July onwards, slippery surfaces can be the cause of injury – so, beware! This is the time to take measures to increase your immune system – prevention is better than cure, during the moody monsoons. Your favourite neighbourhood newspaper, Bandra Buzz - is keeping you updated on all fronts. We are in the process of upgrading to newer technology – that can be a game changer. Your interaction is vital to its success. More on this in the coming issues. Till then, take care.

Serial Molester, Thief and Pervert on the prowl around Bandra & Khar Early morning, around 6 - 7 am is when a guy allegedly on a bike in rain coat and hood (only during the rains) follows girls and offers them a lift. He tends to come from behind – and if the opportunity is right, touch the girl inappropriately or take off with her gold chain or hand bag. Usually, he parks his bike and waits at lonely road corners. If the victim resists and shouts, his bike enables a quick escape from the scene – before any action can be taken and he is nabbed. Taking the person off guard is his modus operandi and he seems to be getting better with practice. This person seems to be from a nearby slum, around 20 years, decently dressed – and clever enough to strike from different lonely spots in Bandra & Khar. His activity is increasing, as he seems to be getting more & more confident that he will not get caught. His victims are early risers – who are on an errand or on their way to work. Besides, female joggers around Perry Road, Mala slope, Sherly Rajan lanes, Pereira Road, Bandstand, Reclamation inner roads, around Almeida Park, Patwardhan Park & Linking Rod, etc. are targeted by this serial molester, thief & pervert on the prowl. If anyone manages to click a photo of him in action, please email us on news.bandrabuzz@gmail.com – with the location, as this will provide clues to the police. The police need to take early morning rounds, along lonely street stretches – to nab such perverts; who are creating fear for unsuspecting law-abiding citizens. This serious issue needs to be tackled on a war-footing. Bandra Buzz Team
