Rachael’s future lies in your hands

Rachel Dhonde (second le) with her family at her home ifficulties should act as a tonic. ey should spur us to greater exertion,’ B. C. Forbes, founder of the Forbes magazine once said. Rachel Dhonde, student of St.Aloysius High School at Bandra, did just that. At the recent SSC Board exams, she secured a whopping 92.91%, overcoming various difficulties that stood in her way. A resident of Sarkari Bawdi, off Peter Dias Road, Rachel has always been a consistent performer in school, securing the top rank almost everytime in her exams. Besides academics, she also drew accolades for her sporting activities, winning a total of 5 trophies last year. She has realised her talents and has made the most of them, and is tagged an

all-rounder in her school. All of just 16 years, she has always wanted to excel in life. e daughter of Regina and Rajesh Dhonde, who haven’t had an education, Rachel now wants to pursue the Science stream, to achieve her dream to become a doctor. And rightly, she wishes to help the suffering poor of India live a balanced life. Her parents make ends meet with their meagre earnings from selling glass items. e 16-year old SSC topper also has a younger sister, Rowena. She, no doubt, has the brains and will to stand strong and achieve her goal of becoming a doctor, but needs the financial backing and support, given her parents’ difficult situation. She has approached Ruparel College,

Matunga for admission to the Science stream, and, her college, medical and tuition fees may well be a several lakhs to achieve her doctorate. She has shown that she has the will to do that, and any amount to help her achieve her dream would be highly appreciated. Right now, she doesn’t have a clue as to which field she would want to specialise in, but she will have a clue when she is more mature. Today, you may be helping just her, but someday, you will be helping the country. SPEEDING KILLER BIKES On my way back home on the 30th of June, I was taken aback by the number of bikers that were speeding down the Western Express Highway. ese bikers weren’t heading to a rally but to a race at the BandraWorli Sea Link that night. All through my journey from Borivali to Bandra, these young speed demons zipped and swerved through traffic, not only putting their own lives, but the lives of other motorists at risk. I could recall at least 20-30 bikes zooming past our vehicle, at unimaginable speeds. What was more horrifying - is that none of them wore any helmets and there were some bikes that had 3 riders. e very thought of having 3 passengers on a sports bike bulleting ahead, at speeds well over 100kmph surely spells trouble. ere were a couple of bikers who would swerve right in front of a few cars and taunt the drivers by doing jigs and stunts on their bikes. Clearly they were looking for trouble. As I finally reached Bandra, I found all of them lined up at the BWSL - waiting for the main ‘event’. It isn’t a surprise that bike races are oen held on open roads and highways where cops are not around or at a disadvantage. However, such races can turn fatal and result in innocent motorists being arrested for no fault of their own. In April earlier this year, a biker lost his life near Santa Cruz in such a race. It may also be a concerning fact, that the family of these bikers aren’t aware of their midnight activities - until it’s too late. Moreover, the revving up of the engines of some of the superbikes out there aer midnight oen resound around Bandra Reclamation and the surrounding areas. Such races might have that certain ‘thrill’ factor, but they should understand that these races aren’t meant for our volatile Indian roads. Joshua Dias IMMEDIATE RESPONSE! e security booth at Smt. Sunita Nanda Chowk, at the junction of Pali Hill & Union Park Road # 3, was renovated by the Pali Hill Association recently. A large amount of debris was le outside my late mother’s chowk, which remained unattended for 3 weeks, even though I had sent a written request and several ‘SMS’s to Ms Madhu Poplai. I was surprised, when I did not get any response. I then contacted Dr. Shukla, resident of Neptune building to intervene in this matter. e matter was personally looked into by him immediately - and the debris cleared. ank you, Dr. Shukla. N. Nanda QUEEN OF THE SUBURBS? Apart from letting us know ‘what is buzzing in Bandra’, it would be good to do your bit into improving Bandra as well. I have seen a number of peoples' initiatives in Bandra to help maintain the sanity of the people who live there - but it is much too less. I have been coming in and out of Bandra since 1964 - and the ‘Old Bandra’ has changed for the worse over the years. How it

Rising Social Activism Dear readers, As the July thunderstorms take us closer to drenched days, social activism is on the rise. Issues that matter most to us are slowly, yet surely, taking centre stage. Bandra, along with her close neighbours Khar and SantaCruz, have hubs of social activism – sometimes mixed with a political twist. e nuisance caused by pubs, eating houses and discos have created like-minded groups that are affected by such nocturnal activity. Youth freedom rallies have been held at the Carter Promenade to protest against

It is without doubt that the ‘cream of the city’ stay here. However, much has to be done in Bandra to live up to the name, "Queen of the suburbs". Let's get the charm of the ‘Old Bandra’ back. modern living. Arun Raghavan NEW CAPITAL VALUE PROPERTY TAX At the Corporation meeting, held on June 21st, the ruling SS/BJP have passed the new capital value property tax bill without even letting a discussion happen on the floor of the house. Very cleverly the administration & ruling coalition got the bill through ‘urgent business’ rather than through the normal agenda - to be passed in a hush hush manner. On asking for a debate & discussion on the issue, I was not allowed to speak at length - and I had barely spoken for 5 minutes, giving details of what the state govt. had proposed & what was actually being implemented by the corporation, when I was not allowed to speak further on the subject - and the proposal was abruptly passed. Hence we staged a walk out. Not long ago, there was a meeting arranged by residents in which the Jt. Mun. Commissioner & Standing Committee Chairman were present & gave false assurance that the people could give recommendations & suggestions - and the same would be addressed & pondered upon. My question to the Mayor was, what was the urgency of passing the policy immediately, without allowing a discussion, just goes to show the double standards of the BMC administration & the ruling coalition in the Corporation. When the policy could be kept hanging for electoral benefits before the BMC election, what was the urgency of passing it immediately - and that too without a debate.is is for the information of residents. Asif Zakaria ELITE’S ENTERTAINMENT HUBS HARASS RESIDENTS e residents living around bars / pubs / bistros / eating houses, etc in the Western suburbs have been harassed to a point of no return by their many illegal activities. We can no longer tolerate this. Our sleep & health is getting ruined at the cost of our so-called elite’s entertainment. We need immediate action, before the situation turns worse. Keeping this in mind the ‘H’ West Ward Federation and the ‘Wake Up Bandra’ Foundation, along with other citizens groups from all over Mumbai had organized a meeting on July 1st 2012. is interaction has helped concerned citizens expose / highlight the irregularities being carried out by these establishments. is was indeed an eye opener! www.issuu.com/bandrabuzz OUTDATED PROHIBITION LAWS TO DIVERT PUBLIC MIND is scenario of ‘Permit Raj’ is indeed ridiculous in today’s world. You work hard the whole day and need some time to unwind, either at home or to ‘hang out’ with family & friends at a club or restaurant, for food & beverages, before retiring to bed. To buy alcohol, you pay the price with taxes PLUS you need a doctor’s certificate and a govt. permit to consume it. If the govt. was so concerned about our health, why do they allow alcohol to be made & sold? Is it to rake huge taxes, that line the pockets of our politicians via various scams, while the general public’s mind is diverted to anger against ACP Dhoble & Co. ? Can we not enjoy a drink in the privacy of our own homes? Are we living in a democracy – or some banana republic? Indians are savy enough, to read between the lines. e time for change has come. In the past months, ‘People’s Power’ has been demonstrated across Mumbai – and we need to be FREE from OUTDATED LAWS. A new revolution is emerging towards all of us being ‘Global Indians’. is will get us to new heights – and real progress. Farooq Patel SAVE MUMBAI Mumbai is under threat - from the very people who are supposed to protect us. Yes, I am talking about ACP Dhoble and the social service branch of the Mumbai Police. Every evening, in a brute display of power, Dhoble carries a hockey stick and raids legally run bars and juice counters in the city. Stop the Moral Terrorism. I was apalled at the behavior of the Mumbai Police - but I knew I had to stand up to such intimidation and save Amchi Mumbai. So I started a petition on change.org asking Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to Stop Dhoble and his moral police. Sign my petition and share it with your friends. For the past few months, the Mumbai Police has been waging a war on us citizens, in the name of upholding law & order. ey are using the draconian Bombay Police Act 1951 and the Bombay Prohibition Act 1949 to terrorise us. Our Demand - Stop ACP Dhoble. Furthermore the government should compensate all the victims of police atrocities and the harassment of people should stop. Sign My petition and share with your friends. Edgar Mascarenhas, having played hockey at the highest level - and having been through years of training and fitness camps, the one thing that he always feel grateful and lucky to have had, was the physical fitness training that he received at an early age in school. It was this basic fitness training that helped him to stand the test of time. He has come to realize the importance of a good scientific fitness program, vital to the future development of a child. It is this base training that he would like to introduce to your kids. Just as the brain which has the maximum capacity to absorb and learn at an early age, so too is the body which can be trained to get maximum lifelong benefits. In fact, it is the lack of a proper fitness program in schools all over India that has kept us lagging behind other countries in sports. Nutrition and Fitness are the cornerstones of children's health. Studies show that children (aged 6 or older) and adolescents need an hour a day of physical activity. In addition, children should participate in muscle and bone strengthening activities at least thrice a week. Soul food for the monsoon season

Paya Soup at Lucky Restaurant (S. V. Road) Living in Bandra definitely has its benefits and even more so in the monsoon! Walking on the promenades at Bandstand or Carter road - watching those enticing waves lash out at the rocks, or eating a charred stick of ‘bhutta’ smeared with lime and chilly at the seafront - is only fun during the monsoon season. e most commonly associated food for the rains is the potato and onion ‘bhajiyas’, these deep fried sensations go well with a spiced cup of tea. But the ‘masala chai and bhajiya’ combination has competition. Aer all - living in a place like Bandra, we are oen spoilt for choice! is weather really sets the hunger pangs going for most of us, who’d rather snuggle up and stay indoors -than enjoy the falling rain outside. Following the ‘breakfast like a king and dinner like a pauper’ saying, here are some delicious neighbourhood options for different vegetarian and non-vegetarian palettes. Here are some ‘must-eat’ options from famous eateries around Bandra: BREAKFAST: e aromas of kheema (minced meat) spiced to perfection draw you into the humble little ‘Café Goodluck’, that’s a prime landmark opposite Mehboob Studios. Another alternative is Café Delite, next to A1 Bakery, Hill Road. My advise to you is to eat light the night before - and definitely walk it off, so you can afford yourself a few more indulgences, in the course of the day. ‘Kheema Pav’ a favourite breakfast option on a dull cloudy morning - is sure to slap that smile back on. For a slightly more fancy ambience, try the masala omlette at ‘Mocha Mojo’ teamed with a wide selection of coffees. However, I think it goes best with a cutting chai. Garam garam Poha also seems to be a favourite - specially for a vegetarian and people who squirm at the thought of eggs. Head over to Chimbai, where before 9am you can buy “home-made” poha from an ‘aunty’ who sells it out of her house, opposite Usha Restaurant. Another recommendation is breakfast at eobroma. A definite hit for this season is their ‘Akuri eggs’, simply explained as the Parsi version of a bhurji. If you haven’t tried it yet, you must drop everything and head down there. And

finally, on my breakfast list an easy option if you have to eat ‘on the go’ it’s the breakfast at Mc Donald’s. Both veg and non-veg options available. e ‘Sausage and Egg Mc Muffin’ combined with a ‘hash brown’ and ‘machine coffee’ is another great way to start a rainy day! Only available from 6 to 11 am. LUNCH: I hope you start your day early, so you have enough digestion time before lunch. When was the last time you visited that tiny little Parsi-joint at Pali naka? ‘Snack Shack’ has been serving the best ‘Chicken Farcha’ since I can remember - and I’m yet to try a better version in Bandra. Khichda – a mutton and dal combination available only on select days of the week at Jeff Caterers, makes for a delectable rainy day lunch at home with your family. I say ‘at home’, as they are only a ‘take away’ place situated in the midst of the Bandra bazaar. ey are hard to miss - and their food will never let you down. Khichda is best enjoyed with fried onion, coriander and lemon squeezed on top. If you fancy eating by the seaside, with hardly any protection from the falling rain, then ‘Camps’ at Bandra bandstand is your best bet. eir masala pav (like pav bhaji) has enough of punch in it, to be able to withstand the pouring rain. I’m already making plans to head over to this next stop to dig in to their oversized ‘bhatures’ with ‘chole masala’. Elco - the famous ‘Chaat’ house on Hill road serves you a great version of ‘Chole – Bhature’ to satisfy a rainy day craving. Another must have is the ‘ragda pattice’ at Karachi, also on Hill road - which is opposite Bandra Medical. e crispiness of the potato patties teamed with the spiciness of the ragda (chick peas) gravy is a delicious combination. And what’s best is that they offer ‘half-plate’ servings, so you still have space to top it off with panipuri - that you can be sure is made with mineral water. DINNER: Once daylight gives way to darker skies and the city returns home frustrated from the traffic that has plagued its roads, the only shining light is dinner-time. A proven fact that food is the best ‘mood-lier’ - here are

Kheema Pav at Good Luck Restaurant Hill Road) the best monsoon dinners available in Bandra! Try the tandoori chicken at ‘Tavaa’ on Turner road, but be sure to ask for it ‘well done’. You will agree that the marinade is delectable & the charred leg-piece is a great option, especially for you weight-watchers. You can also enjoy it with those fresh ‘tandoori rotis’ or ‘lachcha parathas’ & cola topped with ice, making it a sinful combination. If you enjoy ‘spare parts’ - and don’t mind the kick of spice, then you must try the ‘Bheja Masala’ from Lucky Restaurant, that is near Bandra station. But if you prefer to eat light, then definitely opt for their Paya Soup. And if you are like me - and you can’t decide, then order both. You might have just solved your morning-dabba dilemma. e monsoon is the best time to indulge in spicy food. With the cool climate around, I believe it aids digestion, if consumed in moderation. eir exotic soup, with just the right spices and lemongrass – ‘Tom Yum’ is definitely the soup of the season! I like mine with shrimp, but you can have it with chicken or veggies as well, if you are vary about eating seafood at this time of the year. A steaming delight that I oen enjoy before a schezwan-infused meal are ‘momos’. e yummiest Chicken Momos that I’ve had come from ‘Steaming Momo’s’, another take away joint, that delivers only in Bandra. ey are accompanied with a piping hot clear chicken broth that goes well with these thin-batter perfect filling momos. ey have a variety of other fillings like mutton, prawn, mushroom etc. DESSERT: And – well, what we’ve all been waiting for, those beautiful sweet endings to every meal; here are my desert selections for a rainy day. Indian deserts, especially the deep-fried ones are best enjoyed in this weather. Imagine hot hot ‘gulab jamuns’ teamed with vanilla ice cream (or not), fresh ‘jalebis’ - straight out of the pan from Punjab Sweet House, Pali Naka. Have you had ‘Kheer Kodom’ available at Sweet Bengal - on Ambedkar Road? is round ball of mithai is covered with - what looks like ‘malai peda’ on the outside -and has a ‘gulab jamun’ in the centre. It’s one of the most sensational

Chocolate Eclair at Candies bites I’ve had so far. But I must warn you they are highly addictive and ridiculously sweet. e chocolate éclair easily missed at Candies, has a blink and miss quality - but for no fault of its own. ‘Candies’ off late has been in “choice-overload-mode” with so many varieties of everything available. e chocolate éclair has been losing importance, sitting on their shelves stuffed with all different deserts from cheesecakes to cupcakes. But if you like pastry and chocolate, then you will definitely enjoy their version of the éclair, that has the most perfect custard stuffed in the middle. is is a great desert to enjoy with a nice cup of hot coffee. I think I should now start researching the best ways to fight the monsoon flab aer this article hits the stands… Happy eating everyone! Francesca Mascarenhas Pic Courtesy: Olav Rodrigues

Bandra Tata Parsi Colony (Tata Blocks) was buzzing with laughter and fun for a whole week due to their annual Sports Carnival which included a Badminton and Table tennis championship (open). Finally the icing on the cake was a special tele-games event which was organized by their welfare association under the guidance of sports chairman Mr. Noshir Vasunia and sub committee members Ms. Havovi. A Minocher Homji and Ms Mahtav. F Munsiff. ese tele-games are a replica of the German tele-matches which are relay types of Games played between two teams with metal props like Ducks,

Shiv Durga Premi organization (vandre), Bandra, led by the main organizer Mr. Babloo Dalvi, Sub Sunil Mahadik organized a heart warming trip of around 100 boys to Raighad fort to pay homage to the great Maratha King Shivaji Maharaj on his Rajya Bhishek Din ( e day when the great Maratha King Shivaji Maharaj ascended to the throne). Mr. Babloo Dalvi says, “For the past 11 years, without fail, we organize this annual homage trip to Raighad Fort, to pay our humble respects to the Great King Shivaji Maharaj - but this year we got lucky -and our Bandra boy’s got the auspicious chance

‘Crazy Crow, ‘Feed Freaky and an ecofriendly game ‘Save Water’. ere were 6 different teams from the Parsi Colony that took part in the event. e day was full of fun, laced with a fierce competitive spirit. “e games were exciting, funny and knowledgeable”, said Mr Farrokh. P Munsiff who pocketed the 1st Prize while ‘Spicy Chillies’ captained by Mr Persis Patel was the runner up. e telegames were organised by Mr. Russell D’Souza and Mr Minaz of St Peter’s ‘Youth for Youth’ - a social service organization. Vibrant Bandra East Indians

Dressed in their traditional garb and festooned with inherited ornamental jewelry, the East Indians of Chapel Road toddled along from the cross at the junction of Chapel Road and Waroda Road right up to Mt. Carmel’s Church Bandra, on 3rd June, 2012. A tradition revived, members of the community marched along while the band played on. On reaching Mt. Carmel’s Church the rosary was recited and hymns sung in the traditional dialect aer every decade. Post reciting the rosary, Fr. Leslie Malya warmly welcomed and addressed everyone present. e band continued to play typical East Indian songs and few danced to their tunes, while others enjoyed palms full of ‘channa’ with some refreshing drink. e main aim was to bring the community together and address the various challenges they face like the increasing traffic and FSI with reference to goathans, amongst other issues. Some of the crumbling old homes down the road have now given way to buildings - and there has been an influx of various communities. Hence there has been a calling to save what the community can, before it’s all lost to history. Many East Indians are representatives of varied committees and associations, spread across Mumbai, Salsette, ane and even Chaul and are striving to keep their rich culture and traditions still alive. Some EI-related news: e East Indians community still exists.

to take the statue of our beloved king in a ‘palki’ around the whole of Raighad district. is is an honour for us. On the auspicious day, first we weighed the copper statue of Shivaji Maharaj, which is about 22kgs - and then, the same weight of exercise books were weighed and distributed among poor and needy students in Raighad & Pachad village. Before departing from Bandra, Adv Ashish Shellar (BJP) distributed free T-Shirts and Kurtas to each of the volunteers - and gave them a large quantity of books to be freely distributed in Raighad village”. Sir Minaz e community, who are the original inhabitants of Mumbai, recently celebrated the 125th anniversary of the Bombay East Indian Association (BEIA). In his key note address, chief guest CM Prithviraj Chavan mentioned that he knew very little of the community, which was certainly a surprise to many - but literally ‘a calling for EI’s to do much more’. e community today boasts of a mini museum at Manori which houses traditional East Indian kitchen ware and elegant crockery. e Mumbai Gaothan Panchayat (MGP) also held its second annual East Indian exhibition within the Irla Church premises on April 14, 2012 which hosted a number of East Indian household items along with some mouth watering delicacies. It also boasted of a display of the members who have done the community proud over the years. ‘Viva Queimada’, a book which traces the community’s roots along with the history of Bombay, was also recently launched. East Indians spread across Madh Island, U.A.E or even Canada still come together and make merry either celebrating the Church Feast, harvest festival - or just enjoying some delectable EI dishes. Besides just meeting to celebrate over song, drink and dance, it’s imperative that each EI plays an active role, do the community proud, support each other and preserve what is still there. Why was partial BMC demolition done?

Despite constant follow ups with the BMC, with respect to demolition of an illegal construction, carried out by tresspassers at Mary E. Pereira stable (known as Kala SahebTabela) at Kadeshwari Mandir Road, (Cemetry Road) Bandra (West), the BMC has only demolished one single front wall,

which was on the road side - and the flooring of the parapet (passage on the 1st floor of the illegal construction which is on the lane side). Seen above are scenes of action during the partial demolition. When the entire construction is illegal, then why was partial

‘Right to education for all’

Adv Aashish Shelar giving away books at Bunderwadi (Ward. No 97)

Advocate Ashish Shellar (BJP) Ex-Municipal Councillor organized a free note book distribution drive for school children (std 1 to 10th) from Bandra- Khar and distributed around 1,00,000 books with each child getting a set of 5 books each. e drive was open for all students (irrespective of any caste or creed) e drive kicked off from Mount Mary road and went through Reclamation, Nitya Nand Nagar, Indira Nagar, Transit Camp, Bazaar Road, BPES High School, Chinchpokli, Bunder Wadi - and ended at Bandra Slaughter House. On the occasion, Adv Ashish Shelar said,

“In today’s world, education is a must for every child. ey have the right to be educated”. He urged the parents present on the occasion to educate their children -especially the youth, as they were the future of our country. He said, ”e more educated the child is - there is a better prospect for him / her to support himself / herself, family and country. With a proper education, children realize the difference between right and wrong. Hence our children and youth will refrain from taking the wrong path. An educated India is the real ‘India Shining’. Sir Minaz

2012, looks to be more of a formality. What type of a demolition is this, where only a front wall of the illegal building was demolished? Does it mean to say that only the front wall was illegal and rest of the building is legal? e entire structure is 5 feet on the BMC road; and the BMC has demolished only a one feet wall - that's it ! Members of members of our Cross Group viz. President Shri Lawrence D'souza, Trustee Mr.John Fernandes, Trustee Mr.Sabestian Solanki - along with Chairman of the Lokadhikar Welfare Trust - Mr. Anil Kumar P. Nair and Member of Lokadhikar Welfare Trust Mr.Rafat Hussein are actively working with me, for the demolition of the illegal structure. A complete demolition under the MMC and MRTP Act was demanded. It looks like there is a dereliction of duty from the BMC - and a nexus between BMC officials & the illegal occupant Shri Dattatrey Tukaram Kambli. is is very clear from the BMC actions. is act of the BMC amounts to criminal breach of trust and criminal conspiracy. As citizens of this country, it is our duty to protect the interest of the people of our vicinity - and therefore once again I request the concerned BMC officials to personally look into the matter and accordingly demolish the entire illegal structure constructed, at demolition done? e attached dra shown the earliest.. along side has been forwarded to the ward officer, Dy.Mun.Com, Bandra Police station Adv. Shane and the Municipal Commissioner by the Cardoz CROSS organisation and my father, Clifford Cardoz. e partial demolition done on 15th June

Rasika Duga raring to go

Hailing from Jamshedpur, Rasika has come a long way from acting in school plays and musicals, to working with some of the best known directors in the film industry, like Ram Gopal Varma, Santosh Sivan and Anurag Kashyap. An acting course from the Film and Television Institute of India and over five years of experience has not only shaped her outstanding acting skills, but has also helped her create her own unique style and place in the industry. She is currently working on “Qissa”, a film that also stars Irfan Khan, Tisca Chopra and Tillotama Shome. She has been actively involved with theatre and been spotted in a number of successful theatrical productions like ‘e Vagina Monologues’, ‘Bombay Talkies’, and in Das-

tangoi (an art of storytelling in Urdu). She has also been seen on television in popular commercials for Birla Sun life Insurance and Tanishq. While the film has been produced independently over the last 4 years with a twoman crew consisting of director Karan Gour and Director of Photography Abhinay Khoparzi, Gour has also written, edited, coproduced and done the sound design of the film. A thorough Bandraite for the past three years now, Rasika, loves everything in Bandra. “To name a few, I simply love the bhelpuri at Elco’s, Jogger’s park in the evenings, the chapel at St. Andrews, Candies, all those small boutiques, shopping on Hill road - and of course, good old TOTO`S. I am one of those people who wears a T-shirt saying 'I'd rather be in Bandra' when I go to south Mumbai”, she says proudly. at aside - with the black and white movie set for a theatrical release on 15th June, make it a point to look for the petite Rasika, who gives an amazing performance. If you want to watch a really great psychological drama, minus the usual film songs, make it a point to watch these movies at a theatre near you. Rasika’s Filmography: Tahaan (2008) – Directed by Santosh Sivan Agyaat: e Unknown (2008) – Directed by Ram Gopal Verma Kshay (2012) – Directed by Karan Gour Qissa (2013) – Directed by Anup Singh Batla Verus Ferreira

Young migrant girl creates nuisance

is young migrant girl, who claims to be homeless, uses common areas of societies in & around Kantwadi, Chimbai, St. Monica Road & buildings around the Bandra Gymkhana – to sleep & bathe. Her presence messes up the peaceful atmosphere of many societies. Some watchmen of these areas have reportedly seen her bathing nude – in a shameless manner, at the common tap of their society. She is seen seductively dressed, with a matching hand bag, high heel shoes & a mobile in her hand. She seems to have a very ‘approachable attitude’. Many have seen her in other parts of Bandra & Khar – but she always returns to rest & bathe. In spite of being warned not to use private premises, she pleads & continues to do so. Sometimes, she comes to your door & makes faces close to the peep hole. is frightens certain people. At times, she pretends to know someone on the higher floor – so when she is cornered or questioned, she is alert & assertive enough to escape her situation.

She has been reportedly seen jogging around with a man around 40 years old. ere are many similar girls, but she is attractive enough for any man to ‘want her’. She is allegedly looking out for ‘a bachelor with a bungalow’. Yes, chances are that you have seen her around the neighbourhood. A first hand report of a neighbourhood bachelor (real name withheld), says it all: She had slept in the staircase landing the whole night. So when, Rocky goes to pick up his newspaper from his doorstep and comes back to his hall to find this ‘beautiful’ girl sitting on his sofa, he questions her. She pleads to be “Harmless” and wants to sit under the fan for half an hour, as mosquitos had bitten her throughout the night. So, she needs to refresh herself . Rocky tells her to get out, as he needs to have his breakfast. She offers to make tea for him. Meanwhile his mother over hears the conversation - and out of pity, gets her a cup of tea & snacks. Emboldened by the situation, she tells Rocky,” What are you doing here, wasting your time in Mumbai? – let’s go to Goa!” Male society members of buildings should be careful not to interact with her. She is known to confidently abuse a lone society member confronting her. In fact, she needs to be confronted with a crowd – to be effective. A female should be present, as she is capable of creating a ‘scene’ – accusing others of molesting her. is has been going on for many years. e local rickshaw & cab drivers seem to know her nocturnal activities. She seems to have support from certain people – even helping other girls like her to operate in & around Bandra. e concerned authorities need to be alert & act swily, before any untoward incident takes place. More than just a Bicycle Club

e need for company has led humans to form a number of different clubs over centuries. From chess clubs who meet in gardens to a cooking club who gather and grate. Bandra isn’t far behind and has its fair share of local clubs. While each club is special in its own accord, there has been one particular club that has been standing out from the rest of late. e club I am referring to is the Bandra Bicycle Club. is club was formed by Vishal Sharma in March of 2010. Within a span of a little over two years, the club already boasts an impressive 630 plus members on its forum. e club as an entity has a number of different facets. e most recurring being their regular bicycle rides, these rides have a route leader and feature riders in convoy, a sight many Bandraites must

be accustomed to seeing since the club’s inception. e club is also the first in the country to organize rides for children; these take place on the first Sunday following November 14. e core idea behind these rides is to show kids a world beyond their books, a world that exists outside. However, what separates this club from the rest is its involvement in charity. e Bandra Cycle Cub presently works with and supports an orphanage in Kandivali. ere are close to 110 people living in the ashram. ey regularly conduct rides and organize fun fairs for the people living there. So if you are a bicycle enthusiast who is tired of riding alone and you’re looking for company just follow the Bandra Bicycle Club, trust me they can’t be missed. Sean D’mello

Monsoons & Fashion Here’s the thing about fashioning yourself in the rains in a city like Bombay: It’s challenging! #TrueStory, isn’t it? So here’s a couple of fashion & beauty tips you girls want to keep in mind while stepping out and possibly, getting wet: · Keep those gum boots on! Available across the streets linking road and hill road at pretty reasonably prices, this neon and candy coloured footwear will not just jazz up your look, but also help you remain stylish in the water. · at kajal you’re using, make sure it’s water AND smudge proof. Maybelline being my favorite for this product, I’ll be recommending just that for you to use. ey’re Colossal range is to die for! Priced at approximately Rs 150, it may not be L’Oreal, but it’s “totally worth it!” · Bring in that leave-in conditioner – Whether its Liv-On or Matrix, make sure you keep some hair product handy so that you can anti-frizz your hair in the humidity that we have to deal with. A little extra tip for this one? Apply some serum on the ends of your strands right aer you bathe, even if you’ve used a conditioner. You’ll see the difference! · Everyone loves junk jewelry, but at this time on the year you’ve got to keep it minimalistic. Raid the streets of Hill Road, (especially the lane behind Globus) and you’ll know exactly what I’m rambling on about. · e skies are mostly grey, but you don’t have to be. Add pops of bright colours and neons in your ensemble and look uber cool. e simplest ways of doing it? Hairbands, phone accessories, clutches and wallets; or even just

your nail polish. Remember that during the monsoons, your clothes need to be easy-stylish, comfortable and of course protective. Make sure you pay extra attention to good fabrics that won’t give you the rashes, or prints that will make you look too winter/festive. Another great addon would be to keep in mind the fit of your clothes this season – a point oen overlooked, it’s the fit of a garment that balances the style with the comfort factor. Make sure you keep these tips in mind, and don’t hesitate to add on some more to my list if you have any suggestions. ‘Teaching Profession’ has fallen several notches In a country where wealth matters more than most, being a Professor once meant a decent living. However, as the salaries for Corporate sector jobs have soared and those for Professors and Faculty have stagnated, the respect afforded to academics – and the subsequent desire for the student to become them – seems to have done the same. e shortage of Faculty staff in Universities and Training Institutes could be ‘significantly higher’ than the 35% widely estimated. Even though they are immune to this overall shortage, they have come under fire for lacking top quality Professors. It’s now a fact that the respect students had for teacher rivals earlier, has now switched over to star cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar. e shortfall in faculty staff has its roots in the economic liberalisation of 1991. Since then, private sector salaries have increased from twice an economics average to sometimes more than 10 times that figure. Academic careers are unattractive when compared with the other professions. Not only are academic salaries uncompetitive, there are additional constraints to attracting the best talent….the social status of a teaching faculty is not that high as it used to be in earlier decades. As more students desire MBA’s or high Engineering degrees because of lucrative renumeration, fewer will pursue PhD’s and an academic career. ose who invariably do join the private sector or go overseas to teach, leave fewer students with necessary qualifications to teach in India. As far as the standards of Maritime Education and Training are concerned they differ widely despite many endeavours (STCW). e rapid increase in the number of commercial training centers in several major manning countries has led to many “new entrants” who lack basic competence or even understanding of the Industry they are entering; yet still find employment on board ship. e faculty remains understaffed. If you recall, the term ‘Garbage In, Garbage Out’ it is one of the greatest proverbs of the computer age which says that if invalid, inaccurate or inappropriate data is entered into a system, the resulting output will be invalid, inaccurate or inappropriate. In other words, the quality of the output is directly dependent on the quality of the input. e faster our education system is revamped, to recognise this, and sooner the parents accept this, the better it would be

for a country that needs every productive mind to work at its optimal best. What is immediately required to implement this – is an education system that differentiates, and revamping of our system of education at a national level, with due credit to the teaching faculty. It calls for a panel of experts who believe in the need to contemporise our education system, who can put their heads together and create a charter of a system that will be a paradigm shi from the existing one. Fees should be increased to boost staff salaries; decrepit facilities in Universities upgraded to attract researchers; and constraints on economic freedom removed. Today, the Universities are not paying enough…but more than that, it is the way that things are governed; academics value freedom and some flexibility, but very oen some of the systems tend to be very rule-bound and rigid. Institutions should explore more creative options to recruit and pay Faculty staff and raise funding. Institutes like ‘LalBahadurShastri College of Advanced Studies & Research’ which are part of e Indian Maritime University, should continue to produce world-class Mariners, rather than Research!! Can anyone name us a piece of fundamental research that has come out of this college? So, let’s not talk of fundamental research at all – in fact, in a country like India which has one-half of the world’s mal-nutritioned children; one third of the world’s poor; hardly 25% masses know about Merchant Navy career; should we even really be thinking about fundamental research? Just as state-of-the-art Shopping Malls have replaced the age-old, oen unhygienic / badly ventilated bazaars, so must we expect our working atmosphere to change. World class universities with stateof-the-art research equipment / labs and schools with well-equipped libraries, laboratories and classrooms are to be the norm. Universities should have the freedom to interact with the Industry and run their own programs, which will not only improve the student’s worth in the market place, but also allow them to work on projects, which will directly benefit the end-user of their services; the Industry, rather than some age-old Academic norms, which are redundant. e results, undoubtedly, would be astounding. We cannot believe that there can be a better way to empower India than this.
