Air Pollution Turns Effigy Of Human Lungs Black Within Two Weeks

In a span of two weeks the giant HEPA-filter lungs installed outside R.D. National College changed its colour from chalk white to black ‘A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words’, therefore this is going to be a short article; thereafter which we urge you to visit National college, in order to witness the reality of the above-mentioned adage. The experience that awaits you there is indeed jolting in nature, none the less, the projection is very much real. The image that we speak of is an installation, a concerted effort between two NGOs namely Jhatkaa.org & Waatavaran. Installed outside RD National College junction and titled- ‘The Billboard that breathes’, this is a first-of-its-kind initiative in Maharashtra, where an interactive art installation has been used to demonstrate the lethal impact of polluted air on human health. Installed on the 14th of January, the unique creation is an effigy of human lungs and is made of Hepa filters and a fan. The idea is to present a realistic visual that represents the catastrophic damage that our lungs sustain, simply by breathing in the city.

On the first day, the apparatus of the installation depicts the virtuosity of a healthy pair of lungs, however as the days pass, it begins to reflect the deterioration ensued by being exposed there. A brainchild of Jhatkaa.org, the said installation was previously mounted in Bengaluru and Delhi as well. The current public exhibit that has been installed outside National college will be available for viewing till the 31st of January. The initiative aims to posit a real-time imagery reference, with regards to the caustic effect of air pollution and its inimical effect on the human repository system. Shikha Kumar, Campaigns Manager with Jhatkaa. org states “Along with Waatavaran, we decided to showcase the installation in Mumbai because air pollution is not thought of as a serious concern yet. The installation is a great way to generate public awareness and get the conversation going, as people get to see the lungs changing colour. It also gives

a real-time reading of the air quality index (AQI). Alongside this, we have an online petition asking Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the CM to take steps to clean up Mumbai’s air.” Shikha Kumar added “In a span of two weeks the lungs have become black. High levels of particulate matter in the air, caused in large part due to vehicular emissions and dust…was all trapped in the HEPA filters. This has proven to be one of the simplest yet visually effective ways of showcasing what the deteriorating air quality in the city is doing to our lungs,”. If you would like to support and sign the petition please log onto Jhatkaa.org. Kumar added as per studies carried out by air pollution research group, Urbanemissions.info, vehicular emissions and industries itself contributes 31 percent to the total PM 2.5 concentration in Mumbai. “When I saw these faux lungs, I told the campaigners that these are like my lungs,

which have been put up on a billboard. I will now get to see what is happening to my lungs as well as that of other Mumbaikars. This is the best possible way to demonstrate to people what is happening inside their body when they inhale polluted air,” said Dr. Sanjeev Mehta, Chief Pulmonologist, Lilavati hospital. Apart from this, the organizers are also hosting an exhibition titled ‘Breathless: An Artistic Call To India’s Air Pollution Crisis’ at Bombay Arts Society, Bandra Reclamation and will be open to the public till the 31st of January from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibition features, photographs taken by Ishan Tanka and stories written by acclaimed journalist Aruna Chandrasekhar. With such an assemblage of informative initiatives regarding air, one must simply, just do it, and take it upon ourselves to safeguard the future for the sake of posterity. Sidhant Nayangara

Mumbai’s Oldest Gurudwara Serves Food To Over 300 People Everyday Over 300 people are served free meals referred to as “Langar” as a quotidian routine at Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara (Bandra-Khar), without any prejudice or judgement. “We do not question who the person is. Regardless of caste, religion, belief or non- belief, we give them food” says Pritam Singh, Vice President of the trust managing the sacred premise that is Mumbai’s oldest Gurudwara. The Gurudwara was initially established in 1945 at Bazaar Road. Later, a new structure was built at Khar, under the same name. ‘The recognition of the whole human race as a unified being’ is the motto put forth by the member of the Gurudwara and the Sikh community. The service of Langar was begun in the practice of following the guidance of their leader Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the legacy has been carried forth over the past 550 years.

Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara, Bandra-Khar was established between 1945-66 at Bazaar Road in Bandra

Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara serves food to over 300 people everyday Volunteers who are known as ‘Sevadars’ (Those who devote their time to seva or service) prepare the meals along with serving them. They consist of a wide demographic of people, ranging from the youth right up to the senior citizens, giving instant personification to the motto of the Gurudwara. For the birth anniversary of Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, on 2nd January, the Gurudwara served meals twice a day to

somewhere in the vicinity of 1500 people, from all of castes and communities. Hardeep Singh, a professional Chef who volunteered to prepare meals for the occasion said, “I cannot express the feeling of serving and preparing meals for the Sangat, into words. We all join hands and serve people from diverse backgrounds, as a team and devote our heart and soul into it. It is genuinely a feeling near divinity.”

The Gurudwara is open at all times and its’ threshold welcomes members of all castes and communities. “Till date, we haven’t ever run out of resources or finances to serve free meals to the masses. Visitors and devotees, from far and wide grant donations with an open heart” as mentioned by Chief Advisor of the Sabha, MP Singh. The volunteers do not serve people for any adscititious or ulterior motives, and with a mind emancipated from malice & bigotry, serve meals to people without as much as a glance at their attire or appearances. Everyone sits & eat meals in the company of myriads of divergent people without a second thought. This gives us a lot to ponder upon concerning the very essence of humanity and how it is often lost in this day and age. Apart from this sacred device of Seva, the members also organise complimentary medical camps, health check-ups and advocate for awareness campaigns. The gurudwara also houses an ICSE curriculum school, which is the alma mater of around 900 students. Rightly said in the words of The Pres-

ident of the committee, “We aim to serve people and strive to cater to their needs. We focus on tackling the issues of hunger and education to assist and support the community at large.” This marvellous intersection of religion with humanitarianism is observed as a global phenomenon. In every nook and cranny of the world, Gurudwaras exist that serves free meals. Anny Vivino Marianna, a senior citizen from Rome, is a living example of just how deeply the serenity & spirit of service touches the hearts of the multitudes. He thoroughly enjoys visiting gurudwaras in Rome. They are like saving graces for the penurious and needy and emanate an aura of placidity. The world needs more such communities, wherein the barriers of caste, race, creed and gender amalgamate to for form something consecrated. The resplendence of such a school of thought is something we need to etch into our souls. “He who regards all men as equals is religious.” - Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Ronald Rodrigues

Breathless: An Artistic Call To India’s Air Pollution “I end up spending more money on medication every month. I know of a family who are almost spending close to Rs 7000 per person per month on medical expenses. Due to toxic air, everyone living in Mahul is dying a slow death, every house has people with some or the other ailments as we are surrounded by industries. Why were we picked and dumped here?” asked activist Anita Dhole who is a resident and one of the most vociferous voices from Mahul. Moving beyond statistics, air quality indexes and scientific jargon used to discuss air pollution, Anita Dhole left the audience stunned as she narrated the daily ordeal of those living in one of the most polluted areas of Mumbai, surrounded by several chemical factories and two oil refineries. Mahul has been deemed unfit for human habitation by the National Green Tribunal. Dhole was speaking at the inaugural day of Breathless: An Artistic Call To India’s Air

Pollution Crisis at the Bombay Art Society, Bandra on January 23. This photo exhibition was launched through a unique collaboration between award-winning singer & songwriter Ankur Tewari along with photographer Ishan Tankha, using music and photography respectively to create awareness as well as highlight the health impact of Air pollution in a compelling way. Breathless comprises images from across India including Mumbai’s Mahul, photographed by Ishan Tankha & researched & written by award-winning journalist Aruna Chandrasekhar. The exhibition aims to tell stories through diverse cities & their struggles with different sources of pollution while introducing the audience to ordinary people resisting extraordinary pollution. Ever since 2014 India has gone through a metamorphic change politically speaking, from a sleeping elephant to a restless animal, not content with anything sane, but absurd & relentlessly rocking the boat to gain power at any cost (remember Maha Govt formation 2019) thinking that the actions of a few will forever keep them focused for greater glory & pride of rule. Now those days are over because the sleeping elephant has woken up after too many ants have started biting it in the wrong places. Recent happenings starting from the implementation of NRC in Assam & entire North East, have stirred a hornet’s nest, ignited Bengal & spread like wild fire to the South. Mumbai & Delhi are also beginning to feel the heat of divisive politics. Why can’t this government just shut up and let us live in peace. Something or the other is always in the news for the wrong reasons. If it’s not Didi from West Bengal as the target, who continues her

tirade against all, then it is the Grand Old Party who wants to rest in peace, but kept on ventilator to show they are still breathing. Their 60 years of rule or misrule as become fodder for the present regime to keep on raking up issues one after the other to divert the mind of the public from any productive manner of governance. Everybody is waiting for the next two important elections in Delhi and Bihar. The results of the assembly elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra have shown slide in the fortunes of the Ruling Party with signs of desperation and insolence. Which Governor wakes up at 5.30 am to brush his teeth and get ready to administer the oath of office to one with a fake majority at 8 am? This is how low the politics of India has fallen. One prominent political leader has told MAHA CM to remove all VC’s appointed by the previous regime because they are clothed in saffron with a hidden agenda.

Yes sir, we have seen the twist in the tale, when goons at night stormed JNU campus with ulterior motives to trash innocent students & teachers, with sticks & knives because the ugly hand of a political party is desperately wanting to crush dissent. This is a very dangerous precedent of instigating student activists & poisoning their minds. When you touch the nerve center of the student body, you are asking for trouble. On 10th January 2020 the Supreme Court in its decision to uphold freedom of speech as guaranteed under the Constitution, has ordered the State of Jammu & Kashmir to review its order on the complete clamp down of internet services imposed by the Central Govt since 4th August 2019 under Section 144. This has come as a slap on the face for those who have gone too far to suppress dissent & manipulate the system to attain their own selfish goals. Amar Singh

Build Healthy Gut in Your Children Naturally Today a lot of children have allergies & skin problems like eczema psoriasis & asthma & many other skin issues. As adults, we can see this growing as a common trend amongst our children today & a lot of this relates to the way we have brought up our children & our changing environment every single day. Obsessive Cleaning We are living in a world which is very clean. We keep using all antimicrobial hand washes & bath soaps. Microbes play an important role in building a healthy gut. They are smaller organisms that are found everywhere. They are in the air, on your skin, in your clothes, in the food that you eat, in soil & it’s everywhere. There are good & bad microbes. Most of the microbes are found in your gut. Now, these microbes in your gut feed your good bacteria so we need microbes. Same is for plants. If your soil didn’t have microbes your plants wouldn’t live. Your plants would die & if our plants didn’t live in our plants died we wouldn’t exist on this planet. Good Microbes Microbes are required by plants to pull out nutrients from the soil into the plant for the plant to grow. These microbes when they constantly feed on each other they are alive. These microbes consume nutrients from the soil & they produce food like oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, potassium, phosphorus; all the key elements that plants need to grow & then we eat plants and that’s how we get our vitamins & nutrients. Nowadays we are overdoing it on all these probiotics. Probiotics again have become a fad. Everyone thinks that by eating a probiotic their gut-level is going to be good. But your good bacteria, once you ingest a probiotic will probably live for maybe a few hours in the body, if they’re not given the right prebiotics to survive.

Playing in Soil One very powerful lifestyle change that I would like you to introduce is playing with soil. Now I live in a city where I don’t have a garden & I’m not about to go to a common park or a common garden where rats are running around or dogs peeing & pooping everywhere & dirtying my hands & that kind of dirt to get microbes. I’m talking about making yourself a microbe box. This is unconventional but it’s super powerful & it is meditative. I’m going to tell you exactly how it works. A lot of you who live in places where you have access to gardens or access to clean outdoors, get your children to play in mud, get your children to play with soil because these microbes get into your fingernails they get into your skin & they reach your gut making your gut & your immunity extremely strong. These microbes from soil feed your good bacteria, it feeds your probiotic. So then you have a ratio of more good bacteria & less bad bacteria making your immunity grow stronger & that’s how you enable the body to help prevent allergies or to help fight the allergies that you currently have & possibly heal them. Microbe Box So how do you make a microbe box if you don’t live in a place where you have no access or you have a limitation on space? So I basically got a big box & filled it with organic soil & in this soil add a few leaves

Do you want to make an impact in your neighbourhood?

maybe once in a week or a few seeds to it not to grow but for it to generate & feed the microbes. So what happens is it decays & it becomes natural compost. Every day you get your child to play or you play with the soil for five minutes & it is therapeutic. It connects me with nature. This way you can get microbes into your system; natural microbes that will feed your probiotics better than any supplement & it makes your child’s immunity much stronger as well as yours. I see so many people using gloves when they’re planting in their gardens & you know you are not getting any of the microbes in. You need microbes so sometimes be to clean is a bad thing. Chemicals Once in a way have a bath without soap because there are microbes on your skin which gets into your system & feeds your probiotics. It’s good for your gut & immunity. Do not use soaps & shampoos

which are full of chemicals because these chemicals make you so clean that they wipe your body of all the necessary microbes that you have. In the olden days, people used mixtures of ground moong dal as a natural scrub retaining your microbes in your skin. Limit the number of perfumes that you use because perfumes contain alcohol which cleans our skin of all microbes. Sleeping in an air-conditioned room all the time is bad as you need to let in some fresh air even though it’s polluted because fresh air contains microbes which help you boost your immunity. All microbes are not bad. But an e-coli or salmonella could be fatal at times but those express themselves only when we have more bad bacteria & less of the good bacteria. But when we have large colonies of good bacteria it doesn’t allow the expression of an e coli or salmonella which is why it’s always good when you have a digestive issue or you have any of these issues or these viruses in your body to improve your gut health so that you improve the number of good bacteria in your body. That is when she decided to convert the words of her mother Goolestan Mody, “take risks and don’t forgo the chances life give you” into action. Gathering strength from her earlier experiences in the hospitality industry and unending passion for cooking, Kermin decided to start a Parsi food delivery centre from home. In order to reach to more food enthusiasts and to spread the word, she also keeps a temporary kiosk in Bandra on weekends. From the encouragement and support she received from friends and the local community, Kermin is now providing a larger variety of Parsi dishes from her kitchen. The desire to spread Parsi culture and food is a strong driving force for this young lady who is a single mother of Eric (11) and Riya (7). Kermin is cooking dishes like dhansak, salli murgi, farcha, cutlets and prawn patio - most are authentic with recipes handed

down from her grandmothers and some with her own added twist to the traditional recipes. There are both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes available. The author’s favorites are dhansak and salli murgi while the desserts are also interesting and different from the traditional desserts we make at homes. The cutlets start from Rs. 45 and the chicken farchas are sold at Rs. 60. Other dishes like dhansak start at Rs. 250 and desserts are also available from Rs. 150 to 200. Kermin undertakes party orders as well, subject to prior bookings. Kermin highlights the support and love from the local community of Bandra and welcomes everyone to try her dishes. Her dream is to have a permanent kiosk in the locality and to open up her restaurant some day in the future. Story of Kermin is a true highlight of how communities come together and support budding entrepreneurs and members in distressed times. Such experiences build our communities and bring us a step closer to being one large family. Orders can be placed via phone to Kermin Kakalia on 9892435228 or 9820831118. She also puts up her kiosk at Chimbai road on evenings from Friday to Sunday subject to availability. Jessica Bernard

REGULAR INTERNET BREAKDOWNS?? WORLD’S FASTEST INTERNET TECHNOLOGY, GPON DOES NOT RELY ON ELECTRICALLY POWERED SWITCHES.

GPON is an access method that provides fibre connectivity (currently the fastest fixed line medium) using point-to-multipoint technology. Its defining feature is that it uses passive splitters in the fibre network so that a single fibre line from the service provider can deliver connectivity to multiple premises. Whereas an active Ethernet network uses physical, electrically powered switches that open and close to send signals to different premises, GPON does not rely on electrically powered switches.

This Cancer Awareness Month help us spread a Crazy Little Thing Called Love The month of February is celebrated globally in honour of the valiant strive that cancer victims and survivors exude, and therefore Cherish Life India Foundation presents a unique fund-raising event to celebrate love, celebrate life and most importantly celebrate the sheer will to live. The event that takes place on the 21st of February has been organized by Cherish Life India Foundation that was founded in 2013 by Mrs Blanche Saldanha. 100% of the proceeds generated from this event will be utilized for providing medical treatment to children from lower strata of society, who are suffering from Leukaemia, Thalassemia & other blood disorders. In order to provide the best treatment, they have partnered with the Lokmanya Tilak Medical College and General Hospital, also commonly known as Sion Hospital. The NGO has successfully campaigned for the treatment of over 2000 children through the past 5 years, and your contribution and support for this event will motivate them to continue doing so, with accentuated vigour in the future. Scheduled to take place on the 21st of February, 2020 at Mahalaxmi Racecourse, the foundation’s annual event will be headlined by “Majesty: A Tribute to Queen”. After stellar performances by Shankar Mahadevan and Shaan in their previous outings, this time the international act is geared to perform renditions of the iconic British band, Queen’s biggest hits.

Majesty is one of the UK’s premiere touring Queen tribute bands, and have performed at various international festivals. The band has been touring for the past decade and are now going to perform their electrifying recreation of Queen’s most memorable live performances for the first time in India. In spite of the fact that the band is the hero of the show on the 21st, one cannot overlook the determination and strive that the children suffering from Leukaemia & Thalassemia exuberate. And therefore, this will be a night to remember, since it celebrates the life of the kids, who are truly entitled to say ‘We are the Champions’ while they experience the ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ in your company. Therefore, no matter if you are a Queen’s fan or feel like doing some good and having a great time, this concert is going to satisfy your senses. Tickets for the concert start at Rs. 1000, (VIP and Premium package tickets are also available), a catered event, concert-goers can purchase finger/comfort food on-site, alongside with a fully loaded bar menu. Bandra’s KCA celebrates Golden Jubilee Yuvakalaya, the KCA Mumbai’s administrative and hostel building, recently celebrated its Golden Jubilee. The building at Veronica Road, Bandra, had been blessed and inaugurated on 28th June 1969 by His Eminence Valerian Cardinal Gracias. Since that day, the KCA has served as a second home for the youth of the community who came to Mumbai, either in search of jobs or for higher education. So, the Managing committee felt that it would be fitting to celebrate this milestone and also acknowledge the contributions of several people who directly or indirectly helped the KCA. The Jubilee celebrations started with a Thanksgiving mass offered by His Eminence, Oswald Cardinal Gracias and other Mangalorean priests who concelebrated with him. The ceremony began with the delightful little tiny tots who performed a prayer dance and were followed by the Managing Council and the clergy walking in procession. The Cardinal lit the ceremonial lamp before the Mass started. The beautiful singing of the choir enhanced the mass, making it a more meaningful thanksgiving. Once the Mass concluded, all were served a round of refreshments, which was

Chief Guest, Oswald Cardinal Gracias alongside the Guest of Honour, Ms Faye D’Souza followed by the felicitation of the Chief Guest, His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias and the Guest of Honour, Ms Faye D’Souza, the television News Anchor and recipient of the Red Ink Award for the Journalist of the year 2018. She addressed the gathering and also suggested that the KCA must look to provide hostel facilities for women, as times have changed and fifty years of advancements must have equal facilities for women too who come to Mumbai for the

same reason that men do. Cardinal Gracias and Bishop John Rodrigues also addressed the members, and applauded the community for its services and encouraged them to continue with their good work. The President and the Vice President spoke next, after which the KCA dutifully acknowledged with a scroll, the families of those who had helped in setting up Yuvakalaya by getting donors, helping to acquire

required infrastructure, personally supervising the construction work etc. A formal vote of thanks was rendered, making way for a sumptuous and authentic Mangalorean dinner which was relished by all. The festivities now shifted to the higher floor where an excellent six-piece band ‘Rhythm Revival’ managed to get everyone onto the dance floor. The highlight of the evening was the entertainment programme put up by the very own members of KCA and the hostel boys who showcased Mangalorean traditions, customs and rituals in a lively and interesting song and dance show. A complete calorie burn effort by the excellent compere Rohan Sequeira with his exciting games and spot prizes got the gathering to participate and bond well. The youth and hostel boys with their performances were talents personified! Finally, no one was let off without a takehome gift from Rio wines, setting up the tone for the Christmas Cheer! The Golden Jubilee celebration was just not a celebration of fifty years but also a celebration of acknowledgement and regard to those who over the years have put their mind, heart and soul to bring up the community. Til gul ghya, god, god, bola! - Makar Sankranti brings a very auspicious start to 2020

“Til gul ghya, god god bola” is a common phrase heard on the day of the Makar Sankranti which is the first festival of the year celebrated in our country. Tilgul is a sweet made of sesame seeds and jaggery which people offer to others so that when they eat sweet they speak sweet, means leave all the grudges and all quarrels from the past and start on a fresh note in the New Year, it is a simple act of forgiveness and being kind. This day is known by various names and varieties of traditions that are observed in different states. Scientifically Makar Sankranti is the solar event marking the transition of the sun from one zodiac sign to another, as it changes its position it brings the positive energy and an end to the winter season. 14th

of January is the day when Makar Sankranti is usually celebrated and the date changes because of the Hindu calendar which is decided by the position of the moon and this year it fell on 15th January. People of different religions reside in our city and one can easily experience the essence of this festival, especially in Bandra. “It’s a great day to introduce kids to the Indian festival and culture and it’s a beautiful experience. As the festival is not Bombay oriented but more people in this city celebrate all the day together. This is the day where elders in the house give blessings to everyone and kite flying is a way to be outdoor with children and it’s a good exercise and great time for families to bond.” Said Ms

Swati Rone of the residents of Bandra Reclamation area. Following the kites running behind to catch them, shouting ‘kai po che’ when we cut someone else’s kite, sound more fun isn’t it? Where modernization has taken over the millennials, small children of Fr. Agnel Technical High School & Junior College Bandra west were enjoying themselves along with their friends. “Makar Sankranti is not considered as a public holiday hence we attended school and are here to cut everyone’s kite one by one” said Prince. Walking towards Mt Mary through Chapel road I wondered why no signs of kites? My doubts were cleared when I met Mr R.V. Fernandez near Mt Mary ground who said “the problem

here is we don’t get a chance to fly kites because we don’t have access to open skies or wide-open place. Now there are buildings and towers everywhere and very few go to Bandstand or Carter road.” People also cook different types of mouth-watering dishes besides kite flying on Makar Sankranti. Maharashtrians make Puran Poli where Gujaratis make Undhiyu. Bengalis cook Bhogichi bhakri and South Indians makes Ellu Bella. As Makar Sankranti fell on 15th January which was a working day people stepped out with their children to teach them how to fly kites at Carter road on Sunday 19th January 2020. Soham Nyaynit

BANDRA BUZZ | JANUARY 2020

Friends, Indians, Fellow Citizens Lend me a few minutes of your time, and allow us to look around at the place we call our country. This Republic Day you’re likely to be left wondering what the heck is happening to India. What was once unity in diversity is now just diversity. With cracks that cut wide and deep, the likes of which haven’t existed since the time of the British Raj. And like the people of those times, we can only mend the cracks if we strive to take pride in our country. It’s a tall order, I know. The more so when we have seen the wide, paved streets of America to compare to our potholed own. When we have wandered the beautifully preserved castles of Europe, only to come back to our pee-smelling, paan-stained monuments. What, you ask with a roll of your eyes, can we possibly have to take pride in? Our Parliament is worse than an unruly kindergarten class. Our politicians too busy trying to win the Guinness record for most

inane thing ever said by an MP to care about the people. And our economy so bad, the doldrums would be an improvement. JFK junior, one of the best known American presidents, once told the people of his country ‘To ask what they could do for their country’, and not vice versa. Some decades later, Michael Jackson pointed out that ev-

erything began with ‘the man (or person) in the mirror’. It holds very true for democracy. If everything is for the people, of the people and by the people, then it is up to us, the people, to make that change. Yes, we can resolve to choose our representatives wisely. Voting is one of the biggest things we can do to make a difference. It may

seem futile initially when the party you voted for doesn’t win. But standing up & letting your voice be counted is an important part of keeping democracy alive. However, we don’t have to wait around for the next four years to pass, before we think of doing something. There are plenty of ways & means to contribute and make ourselves heard. This Republic Day, let’s resolve to look around us, and see what we can do to make the changes we would like to see. Want people to treat animals better? Volunteer at a shelter. Feel women need to have more rights? Help an uneducated woman learn a skill so she can earn without depending on a man. Don’t like the way cabs or ricks are fleecing you to get to work? Start a carpool with some colleagues. It is easy to sit around and blame someone for the mess that we see on a daily basis. However, we need to remember, that we are all ‘someone else’ to the other person. Maryanne Pereira

Winds of Change ‘New year, new you’, goes the phrase. As we begin another new year, we are full of good resolutions. Whether they are ones we think we ought to do or ones that are extremely personal to us, they can sometimes seem like we’re trying to achieve the impossible. Quite often, our resolutions don’t even last the month! We join the gym, attend every lecture, take the initiative at work, and but the time February rolls around, all our good intentions have done is pave some more paths to hell. Why is it so darn difficult to make changes in our lives? And can we ever make changes that stick? One of the big problems with the resolutions that we choose is that they often are not ones that we agree with. They are ones we think are ‘good’, or ones that have society’s approval. You may decide to study hard this year or aim for that promotion. But if deep down, you’re thinking of how many chapters you can skip studying, or if you don’t want to stay the late nights & put in the overtime required for the promotion, no matter how many resolutions you make, it won’t happen. Yes, they are very good aims to achieve, but if internally you aren’t in agreement with them, it will be an uphill task that you eventually abandon. The way to make such resolutions work is to first be honest with yourself. Admit that no matter how good these aims are, you aren’t quite willing to achieve them for whatever reasons. Then, find a way to make these resolutions more appealing to you. Let’s say you tell yourself that for each chapter of a particular subject you study, you’ll allow

yourself to watch an episode of your fave Netflix show. Immediately the task has more meaning in your eyes. It’s still the chore that your subconscious envisions it as, but now you have a reward at the end. Which means that your mind is far more likely to cooperate with you, & help you in achieving your goals. You can choose to reward yourself with small gifts, or time spent doing something you love, or by spending time with someone you love. The actual reward should be something that you love or enjoy doing so that you’ll have an incentive to finish the more distasteful part of your bargain sooner. There are also goals like working out, or losing weight, or aiming to be more popular or learning a new skill. We tend to begin these full of enthusiasm, and then it peters out in the end. Eventually, while we may achieve small goals in these areas – we lose two kilos or learn the basics of a new skill – what we achieve never lives up to what we had hoped for. We are left disappointed, and feeling like we wasted our time and money. The problem with these types of goals is twofold. One is that we tend to underestimate how much time it would take us to achieve our targets in that area. We tend to think that we’ll be fluent in a language in a few months of intensive classes. Or that our bodies will be whipped into shape within a few months of going regularly to the gym. Yes, that may happen for a few lucky people, but the vast majority of us have to put in some solid work for maybe even more than a year to achieve such aims. It’s probably best when making such resolutions to look at the

longest possible time to achieve such goals, & then add on a few more months, just to be safe! If you still feel that this is something that you want to achieve, and the long timeframe doesn’t put you off, go for it. Chances are you will be ahead of the slow schedule that you have drawn up for yourself, which will be an extra motivational boost. Another issue with these kinds of goals is that we often aren’t doing them for ourselves, but for the reaction that we expect from the world. We say we want to lose weight, but we’re secretly thinking that we’ll become the most dateable person around when the weight falls off. We join an art class, hoping that the professor will be astonished at the talent we display. And when we don’t get these reactions, we are miserable & feel like failures. Honesty is again key here. Why do you want to achieve a body like Kylie Jenner or Tiger Shroff? Are you hoping that your life will improve if you do?

Chances are beyond having to buy a different size in clothes, you will see little to no change at all. People don’t react the way we expect to changes that we make. It’s far better for you to want to lose weight for health purposes, or to achieve some tangible goal – like the ability to run a marathon, or to have better stamina – than to hanker after things that are dependent on others’ reactions. In such cases, you will most definitely have to modify the reasons for your choices. Don’t aim for Kylie’s body, instead, maybe aim to be able to run ten miles without getting tired. Or perhaps take a self-defence class instead, & make that a goal. Resolutions don’t have to leave us feeling like we’ve failed to achieve our aims. But we need to examine those aims closely & honestly if we wish to achieve them. So let’s take a good look at the goals we set, and pursue them wisely over the course of this new year. 11th edition of Aarambh aims to create awareness about Sexual Assault Social Responsibility Forum (SRF) is a club of NMIMS University, which greatly believes in the holistic development of its students and the society as a whole. SRF was established for uplifting the lives of those less privileged than oneself and evoke a sense of responsibility within our society. It has been a beautiful journey of 10 years and we are proud to declare the 11th edition of our flagship event AARAMBH, a social marathon which calls for spirit, vivacity and exuberance among its participants. We have taken up grave issues ranging from woman trafficking to drug abuse. Carrying forward our tradition as a youth-led organisation striving for social good, this year we will be running for a cause that has an everlasting impact and requires great public attention - “SEXUAL ASSAULT”. Any funds hereby collected will be given to our partner NGO dedicated to the cause. Sexual assault is any type of sexual activity or contact that one does not consent to. It includes rape and sexual coercion. We, at SRF, stand against such heinous acts and aspire to make a move to combat this issue. This year our club has collaborated with Jan Sahas NGO which is committed to promote the development and protect the rights of socially excluded communities with the special focus on girls and women

through eradication of all forms of bondage. Their main mission is to provide justice, decent livelihoods, education, food and nutrition security, mobilisation and promoting the overall development of all women. This event will take place on the 9th Feb., 2020 at 7 a.m. which starts at Taj Lands End. The participants will not only be benefiting the associated NGO but will also be getting an exhilarating experience of competing against vivacious like-minded people. As we take bigger strides towards scaling up our event, we urge you to join us in this fight against sexual assault by reclaiming the streets. Come, unite your voices against this atrocity and help us turn the streets into a safer space. To be a part of this virtuous initiative, contact: Kartik Bindal +91 9425958589
