GEM of a Player Jemimah Rodrigues

What do you want to be when you are 17? In January last year, when we asked 16 year old Jemimah Rodrigues this question, she said it would be to break into the senior Indian cricket team. At 17 years and 129 days, this Bandra girl has had her dream come true! Last week, Jemimah was called to join the 16-member Indian squad on its tour to South Africa, where they will play 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is as a part of the ICC Women’s Championship. But for Jemimah the feeling still hasn’t sunk in, “Maybe when I get out with the team for the first game will I experience the real feeling.” Recently, in November last year, she became the youngest and only the second Indian woman player to score a double century, playing for Mumbai in the U19 inter-state tournament. But her consistent performances in the senior Women’s Chal-

lenger Trophy earlier this month sealed the deal for her. It was for the third time in three years that Jemimah was playing at the senior Challenger Trophy and she was looking forward to making her presence felt this time around. She grabbed the opportunity with both hands and stamped her mark finishing the tournament as the third highest run-getter and only behind seasoned campaigners, now Indian teammates, Punam Raut & Smriti Mandhana. Introduced to the game by her elder brothers, Enoch and Eli, at the age of 4, when most girls were figuring out whether they liked a pink or blue coloured dress, Jemimah has come a long way since. But her talent was discovered only by chance; when she was invited to attend the selections for the summer camp of the Mumbai girls’ team when at a training session her

brothers were attending at the KMCC, Shivaji Park. Until then, Jemimah had no clue about the existence of the Indian women’s cricket team. “While I entered the ground with my dad - him holding my kit bag in one hand and my hand in the other - the other girls laughed at the sight. But in only the second ball that I bowled, I had taken the first wicket of my career. Not long after

in one of the games, I managed to strike up an eighth wicket partnership with a senior player. In the immediate next game, I was sent in to bat at one down. It was then that my dad realised that I should focus on my batting too,” reminisces Jemimah. Valerian D’Costa Contd. on Page 2 >>

GEM of a Player - Jemimah Rodrigues Contd. from Page 1 While she started playing for her school team (St. Joseph’s Convent, Bandra) only at the age of 12, she made it a point to hone her skills at the MIG ground, where she used to tag along with her brothers since when she was all of just eight. Regularly playing with her male counterparts has helped her get stronger and even pick up the tricks of the trade from their experience. Jemimah’s dad, Ivan, who has been by her side for most part of her journey remembers the time when he’d asked his much-younger-than-now daughter to get her bat from her home to the ground. “She sprinted that couple of hundred of metres home & came back in record time! I was amazed & then knew that there was something special about her. I think that explains her running between the wickets,” says the beaming Ivan Rodrigues. Jemimah on her part has left no stone unturned in getting to her dream of playing for the national team. “Last year I was playing my senior zonals & I understood the difference in fitness between me & the senior players. I realized that if I have to play a higher level of cricket I need to raise my fitness levels. I can’t give an excuse that I’m small. So I called my dad that day itself & told that I needed to join a gym. Under the guidance of Venancio Dsouza from V’s Fitness in

BANDRA BUZZ Khar, I saw my fitness go to a new level & in the process that’s helped my game too.” Jemimah - whose favourite player is the national team’s skipper, Mithali Raj wasn’t even born when Mithali made her debut for the Indian team. And yet here she is today sharing the dressing room with her idol. But the road wasn’t all a bed of roses & Jemimah did have her share of challenges. “There was a time when I wasn’t performing well a couple of years ago just after I had attended the India U19 camp for the first time. Whenever I went out in the middle to bat & tried my best, nothing seemed to click. That was a very rough phase & I used to cry alone in my room. But both my mum & dad believed in me. They knew the player I was & made me believe that my recent performances meant nothing to them & they knew the batsman I actually was.” Her father, who was also her first coach, is her closest confidante. “Whatever happens during the day, my dad is the first to know, whether on or off the field. He & my mum are my support system. They try to attend all my games in any part of the country.” She even attributes her comeback in the game after that rough phase to her prayer life & her habit of reading the Bible regularly, something she continues to practise beside her cricket. Besides, she loves listening to Christian gospel music while travelling & her favourite track is

Good Good Father by Chris Tomlin. The journey so far surely has been worth it but it’s come with a few sacrifices. “Since the age of 8, almost every year my family has been going out for summer vacations & that was the time every May when I had my selections for the Mumbai team. I used to long to go along with my family. I don’t remember the last time I’ve gone on a vacation with my family. But it was only when I was younger I used to feel it, looking back now I don’t regret the sacrifices I made then. It was worth every bit of it,” exclaims Jemimah. However, she does spend quality time with her family when possible. Both her brothers - Enoch & Eli - help her with her studies, especially Economics & Accountancy, which is, in fact, much fun for her. And although Jem – as her mother calls her – has been consistent with her academics & has tried to study as much as possible at the beginning of the year for her HSC exams, she is relieved that she’ll be on her way to South Africa with the team. “I’ve had very little time in the last few months to prepare for my exams & the tour happening now is like a blessing in disguise.” And while she seems quite ‘innocent’ according to her seniors, lesser known is the fact that Jemimah is quite a prankster & likes to pull a quick one on her teammates. But that according to her helps her gel well with her team & even her seniors

IN FOCUS

Father & daughter - Ivan with Jemimah seemed to get along well with her in the recently concluded Challenger Trophy. A word of advice Jemimah has for teenagers & especially girls her age is, “If you have a dream, do everything possible to achieve it. Put all your energy in achieving it. There will be people & things happening around but your focus has to be on the goal. Once that’s done there can be nothing that’s too difficult to overcome & the end result is surely worth it!” At 17, Jemimah Rodrigues is a cricketer in the Indian national team!

Sometime back, cash from my purse was robbed by pickpockets in 2016, at Bandra Railway Station bridge. Walking up the steps, I suddenly smelt perfume – and then felt dazed. My hand bag was snatched and over Rs. 8,400/- in cash, robbed. Besides, they hit me – so, I could not retaliate, while they escaped with my belongings and cash. I felt devastated. Having lodged a police complaint at the Bandra Police Station on Hill Road, I followed it up with regular visits and letters. In 2007, the cops called me to Mumbai Central Court for identifying the robbers, from a line-up of thieves. Indeed, it was a frightening experience. I still remember the expression on the faces of those alleged criminals – and decided to just forget everything, as I found it difficult to follow up. Then, last year, I got a call from Bandra Police Station, to come and pick up a

cheque, from the amount that was robbed from me. They persisted that I collect the money, or it would go to the government treasury. Finally, I received an ultimatum postcard on 26th December 2016 to collect my cheque. That evening, I went to the Bandra Railway Police station, along with my friend, Adv. Esmeralda D’Mello. In the picture, we have Head Police Constable Choudhury and Senior Police Inspector Jadhav who gave me a cheque for Rs. 5,000/-, from the amount that was robbed from me at Bandra Railway Station in 2006. I thank God, the Bandra Police – who are doing a wonderful job and my government for finally getting my cash back from the pickpockets. Jane Rodrigues

HILL ROAD ACCIDENT NO LESSONS LEARNT, NOTHING’S CHANGED Yet another tragedy when a boy riding bicycle, comes under BEST bus on Hill Road. Life in India is cheap and why? Cause government apathy in all matters of governance. Neglect of safety norms, greed of collecting hafta from hawkers crowding Hill Road and total disregard for maintenance of pathways. On the other hand improper parenting and lack of control over wards is also major issue in the present context with this mobile generation. It’s a common sight to see boys on motorbikes zigzagging through crowded streets, speeding on Western Express highway resulting in death. The police is not a watchman to patrol streets 24x7. It may be so in developed countries, but India cannot afford that luxury. Children love to play on roads, go riding bicycles in lanes because they do not have sufficient place as play grounds. The builders conniving with officials have usurped spaces meant for parks and play grounds. We live in one of the

most densely populated and congested city in the world. The BMC has a hard task maintaining a city that is bursting at the seams with daily migrant labour arriving from the Northern states for want of jobs. Hence the whole gamut of providing clean and healthy, sincere and honest administration is gone to the winds. Not long ago, 23 people died on a railway bridge from stampede. On December 28th 2017, a fire breaks out on a swanky rooftop hotel in Lower Parel, killing 14 merrymakers from asphyxiation. BMC is playing hardball to ward of the blame for issuing licenses and permits for illegal operation without adhering to safety norms. The owners of the pubs and restaurants are absconding and their relatives are trying to protect and shield them from the law. The managers have been arrested and already behind bars. Even after 3 days the blame game shifts from BMC to those responsible for this gruesome tragedy. This is the state

Jump start the Yang Earth Dog Year '18 The Year of the Yang Earth Dog begins on 16th February 2018. It marks an end to the previous two fire years of 2016 (monkey) and 2017 (rooster). The corresponding element for this year is Earth. The Dog is his masters’ best friend – loyal, sincere, devoted. Now, combined with the Earth qualities of stability, nurturing and growth; we can look forward to a more secure rewarding and profitable “down to Earth” year in comparison to the chaotic last two years. A year of social awareness, that will reward people for hard work and diligence! The dog is a pack animal, that is why the beginning of dog`s year is worth celebrating with family and very close friends. Seek opportunities to connect socially and professionally. Don’t stay at home. Find your long lost friends and colleagues and see them in the real world in 2018. The integrity and diligence of the dog is perfect for long standing projects that require perseverance and determination. Focus on finances, security and simple living. Watch your stocks care-

fully. Prosper by being flexible and creative. If you are contemplating to purchase a home or make an investment in real estate, everything should align well for you this year. Earth colors like brown, sands, beige, terracotta and yellow are auspicious colours to add more energy and luck in 2018 as in clothes, accessories, home accents, art décor and enhancements. Accentuate it with fire colours like red, pink, orange and purple to create effect. Avoid wearing colours like black, blue, white, grey, green that are associated with water, metal and wood elements as these are not harmonious to the earth energy for 2018. The thumb rule is to wear the lucky colours often and especially for important events, meetings and interviews. which is supposed to be most progressive in India and it had the added advantage because the British built the rail and water networks much before Independence. But thereafter every issue has become a challenge to the governments that followed and the main cause of our discontent is corruption that is rampant in all spheres of administration. It’s like cancer that grows unabated. People are fed up with rising prices, unemployment and overall hopeless governance that is more religious centered than the real issues on hand. What India needs is a strong leader, clean and not bipartisan, a leader who cares for the upliftment of the masses, focused on the welfare of the State. The Gujarat

election results have shown the growing discontent with bogus slogan mongering of ‘vikas’ and ‘maan ki baat’. The Swachh Bharat scheme was another way of indirectly collecting taxes without actually bothering to implement in its true spirit of the word. What Swachh Bharat ‘ needs is cleansing souls of our political masters. After 7 years all accused in the 2G Scam have gone scot-free, wasting time and money of Parliament, investigating agencies and most of all creating a sensation that brought the previous government on its knees. Only in this country we have such type of drama that unfolds to distract the electorate from real issues of governance. Amar Singh

Excellence Award for St. Andrew’s Parishioner Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere, says a Chinese proverb. And how true it is in the case of Denise Athaide, of Virendra Colony, B. J. Road, Bandra, and parishioner of St. Andrew’s. Denise meritoriously graduated in Electrical Engineering from the Agnel Institute in Vashi, Navi Mumbai and interned at some of Mumbai’s leading industrial firms. In mid-2016, she secured admission for doing her Masters at Arizona State University and has already successfully kept terms. In the process, Denise was selected for a Teaching assignment simultaneously, and while doing so was nominated by the Graduate and Professional Student Association, from among over 100 students, for the Teaching Excellence Award which also carries a prize amount. The Annual Awards Ceremony is scheduled in the spring semester when she will be honoured and recognized by her peers. Her flair for teaching was evident even at play school which began at Roots at St. Andrew’s Road, and where she got an all round development not just in academics but also in social graces and codes of propriety inherent in very culture and society. Here Denise held her teacher in high admiration, and an

interesting anecdote comes to mind: on her return from school, Denise continued class at home with imaginary pupils. One day, her mother asked if she could join the class, and she promptly replied “but you will be the one who is absent.” Denise is blessed with the gift of making friends easily & keeping in constant touch with them. Her friendship trail commenced at play school, several more were added in school & college and when she proceeded for further studies abroad a retinue was left behind and newer ones were added in her present university. She makes time to communicate with them & they graciously respond. Determination is behind her perseverance right through her academic career and her popularity won her the prized position of Head Girl at St. Joseph’s Convent High School, Bandra. Later, she was nominated to the Committee of the St. Joseph’s ex-Students Association where she successfully interacted so well with her seniors as to merit a fond farewell as she bid adieu to move on in her professional studies. Green Groups Bond for Mangrove Protection

The natural wonder of Carter Road, its mangroves, has been choking with garbage. Piles of plastic debris and food waste conceal this tangled-green coastal swamp that function as safe-havens. In December, 2017, the Maharashtra state mangrove cell, the forest department and the Mangrove Foundation inclined for a joint effort to save Mumbai’s mangroves. As part of the ‘Clean Mangrove’ mission, over 700 volunteers, including students from St. Andrew’s, St. Pauls, Rizvi college and R. D. National college held out a rally, in support of the campaign, followed by the cleanliness

drive on December 16. The campaign resulted in the removal of 3,000 kg garbage from Carter Road. Mangrove’s flora houses a variety of fish, crab and shrimp, ride-out storms and tsunamis and limit erosion. A documentary, titled ‘Shore-keeper’, played at the rally, reinforced the importance of mangroves. Additional principal chief conservator of forest, N Vasudevan, said, “Debris-dumping on mangroves makes it available for proliferation of slums or illegal construction. The Mangrove cleanup will occur on a regular basis. The idea is to clear the trash

near the roots of the trees.” Around 5,800 hectares of land in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane is under mangrove cover. The city-wide clean up drive will be done at eight locations - Dahisar, Borivali, Versova, Bandra, Sewri, Bhandup, Airoli, and Turbhe. On weekdays, officers and workers from the municipal corporation will clean and on weekends, volunteers will be joining too. As an urgent need to stop degradation of mangroves, the state mangrove cell has also launched two websites - mumbaimangroves.org & konkanwetland.com

- that will enable the citizens to file complaints against mangrove destruction or report wetland related issues. They can also check the status of their complaints in real-time. Mangroves are protected by law. If you find any kind of mangrove destruction, complain to the forest department, the police or report it through the website. Authorities are equipped to take action under the Maharashtra Tree Felling Act and Environment Protection Act. Sharlene Lobo

Chimbai beach gains back its charm as it is being cleaned by BMC on a daily basis Residents witness a vast difference as heaps of garbage is cleaned every day BEFORE (November 2015)

AFTER (January 2018) Hiding under the cover up of Bandstand promenade and Carter Road lies the extensive Chimbai beach which has recently received some limelight. Not known by many, Chimbai Beach serves as a home to over hundreds of fisherfolk families who have been living there since centuries. This beach which was filled with garbage is now being cleaned through the efforts of the residents, local leaders and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). A workforce of around 17 labourers are cleaning the beach every morning from 8 am to 12 pm. These labourers pick up all the waste washed away by the tide using various cleaning equipments, collect it and pile it at different locations on the shore. Then a JCB collects this garbage and dumps it into a dumper truck which comes at the beach in the afternoon. This entire exercise is expected to be conducted on a daily basis. BMC initiated a drive on January 11 which was inaugurated by cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta. This drive has facilitated mechanised cleaning of the beach on a daily basis using JCB and dumpers instead of picking up garbage using bare hands. The contract has been awarded to M Mona Enterprises for a year for Rs 70 lakhs. Residents claimed they have witnessed tremendous change in the situation before and after this cleanup drive. Damian Cabral, a resident said, “This beach was considered as one of the filthy beaches of Mumbai. Every high tide brings in the garbage basically consisting of heaps of plastic material. All of this would get collected near our house for we stay right on the beach. Sometimes the garbage would enter our house or get collected outside our house. It would stink and affect our health.” And now after the cleanup drive, Cabral said, “We have seen a vast difference after

the cleaning. There is no accumulation of plastic now as the garbage is being removed. We just hope this drive will be continued on a regular basis.” Residents are majorly concerned about the sand which should not be wiped away with this cleanup drive. “We just fear all the sand should not be wiped away while the JCB picks up the pile of garbage. We understand a little amount of sand will be picked up every time some garbage is picked but just that the beach should be maintained in its original form,” Cabral added. Prior to this drive, the beach was filled with heaps of garbage and was not cleaned for more than two years. Daven Kandoria, Vice President (Mumbai) of The National Association of Fishermen who resides at Chimbai said, “This beach has been neglected because it is hidden and not out in the open. Also, there are no elite members residing here so the authorities do not bother much about simple fisherfolk like us. We have been repeatedly approaching the BMC.” Chimbai beach has been cleaned several time by locals, residents, fisherfolk, school and college kids, parishioners of St. Andrew’s Church and various Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). Brian Dharmai, a resident of Chimbai, said, “We have been cleaning his beach on several occasions as this beach has been an integral part of our childhood. Till last year there was so much garbage on this beach that we could not even walk properly.” The contractor is firm on continuing this drive till the beach is cleant entirely. Ashok Sutar, a senior member of M Mona Enterprises, said, “We have removed large amount of garbage from this beach in this week. We want to clean the beach entirely and my labourers are coming every morning for the same. We will continue this drive till this December.” Residents just hope this drive contin-

ues and people are aware about maintaining cleanliness. Cabral said, “Often, even residents throw the garbage into the sea because it is the easy way out. We should realise that this same garbage is washed back to our homes when there is a high

tide. People are now changing slowly and we hope with this cleanup drive Chimbai beach will again become a beautiful spot like before.” Ronald Rodrigues

HEALTH

Yoga during Pregnancy The benefits of practising yoga are known to most of us. But did you know that its even more important at the time of pregnancy? One does get jittery on realising that you’re going to have a baby and that special care needs to be taken. Yoga is known to have several benefits and also cures a lot of ailments as most yoga trainers would tell you. Doing yoga ensures a smoother and normal delivery according to doctors and yoga trainers. According to Sonali Shivlani, Internationally Certified Pregnancy & Post Natal Consultant exercise is a very important part of well being and during pregnancy it holds additional importance as the body is working hard to develop a new life. “Yoga prepared the body for labor and birth. It reduces pregnancy discomforts, aches and pains like back ache, and leg cramps. It also keeps the hormones in check hence there are less pregnancy related complications.” Fitness experts are of the view that exercises such as walking, yoga, swimming and pre-natal exercises are good during pregnancy. However one must consult the doctor before doing so. Preeti Rathod, who delivered via normal delivery a year ago reveals, “I did pre-natal yoga during my pregnancy. I

started in my fourth month and continued till the ninth month. Some of the exercises included squats, yoga and breathing exercises and it enabled me to have a normal delivery. Both lectures and exercises are of great help and during labor also I did the exercises as advised by the trainer”. Another Pregnancy Fitness Educator, Reshma Jadhav opines, “It is essential to exercise during pregnancy because of the hormonal changes. Moms to be experience mood swings, nausea & lower back pain”. Working out and practising yoga can help them relax and de-stress. Besides it prepares them for labor and also improves energy levels. Some of the asanas that yoga trainers recommend are the cat stretch pose, the warrior pose and the butterfly pose and pregnancy squats and the pregnancy Surya Namaskar. Gayatri Rao, a doctor at the Women’s Hospital in Khar is of the view that most women do some form of exercise during pregnancy. “Yoga helps them relax. Nine months is a long period and there are hormonal changes and also the back becomes weak. Therefore exercise helps in smoother and normal delivery,” Experts also feel that an awareness

needs to be created so women can understand the importance of exercise and yoga during pregnancy and consult a doctor. “One should consume a variety of healthy foods and beverages to provide the important nutrients that a baby needs for its growth and development, besides exercising,” continues Reshma. Some of the precautions to be taken while exercising include: They should begin exercising in the second trimester. They should workout on a non-slip yoga mat and keep themselves hydrated while

exercising. They should begin workout only after their gynaecologist has given them the approval. “Pregnancy is not about loosing weight but it’s about strengthening the muscles,” concludes Reshma. One can also refer to the renowned books on pregnancy that include what to eat and when to exercise for pregnant women. So no need to worry when you get pregnant. Just exercise and follow the right diet and be happy! Divya Jain

LIFE HACKS AT THE STORE Have you ever wondered if there was an easier way to lace up your shoes? Do you cycle or go for a jog early in the morning or late in the night when it’s still dark but peaceful, yet have to worry about oncoming traffic? Or did you wish to make your last house party really cool but didn’t know how to go about it? Most of us, if not all, would surely have had one of these thoughts in our minds at some point of time & while we didn’t know how to help ourselves, the answer is finally here. And it’s stunning, even more so hallucinatory! Perched atop the Link Square mall just off Linking Road, “The Store” is described as something different by its co-owners, Piyush and Asha, yet a visit here is really mesmerising in many ways and seemingly futuristic in some. “Our aim has been to provide products that fit into the theme of “Something Different” and funky,” says Piyush while Asha adds, “Even people who are well travelled across the globe would find the products innovative & going with the theme “Something Different”.” Take for example their cool LED shoe clip that allows you to let motorists know about your presence or the floating bluetooth speaker that glows in the dark while belting out your favourite tunes at your house party. Even more eye-catching was the monk figured incense burner with their colourful incense pods with a back flow mechanism.

But that’s not all, temperature sensor tap faucets - which light up the colour of water based on its temperature, a variety of table lamps with humidifiers & aroma diffusers, LED caps, crystal glass dip pens & even inflatable drinks cup holders took it to the next level. “The collection is hand-picked from different parts of the globe keeping in mind all age groups. Spotting & procuring products along the line of our theme is a continuous process. The collection is refreshed on a regular basis & there is always something new which one would find in the collection on the next visit”. The Store has even been designed in sync with the theme of its collection giving you a magical feel even as you enter it. Everything has been customised to add an interesting twist to the store with bright and rustic look. “We are dreaming to be a brand that is loved by people of all age groups and prices ranging from Rs. 50 - 5000.” A visit to the store will surely blow your mind away! 2018: Chapter Change Dear Reader, January helps renew our minds & body – with a subtle feeling of change. New year parties have been celebrated from last year’s final hours to the wee hours of dawn 2018. Bandraites make merry like no other and lose no opportunity to enjoy themselves. Yes, we are at the start of a new year. There is renewed energy everywhere. Authorities are eager to complete unfinished projects. Citizens are checking new horizons for travel, education, business or jobs. Politicians are planning for next year’s elections – and have already increased their visibility quotient. Activists are searching which new issue to fight, within the current framework of our muzzled media. Road rage is on the rise. Criminals are changing their modus operandi, using newer hi-tech methods. Bandra is buzzing with hectic activity across eateries & shopping spots. Yes, all this spin seems like a chapter change. Are you happy with the quality of life in your neighbourhood? Can anything be done to improve whatever is wrong? Do you have any important info that can avoid an impending disaster – and people need to be warned? Has anybody in your area achieved anything spectacular – an award, recognition, promotion, etc.? If you

have documentary proof, we at Bandra Buzz can be your perfect platform to disseminate news to those who matter. As Bandra Buzz – your favourite neighbourhood newspaper, enters her exiting eight year of publication; the future holds endless possibilities. You, our supportive readers are a valuable part of our success. Your interaction is important to the vitality of this newspaper, to take this to the next level of excellence. Together, we can make it happen. Wishing you a ‘Happy Republic Day 2018’ – with plenty of patriotic fervour.
