GARIB NAGAR SLUM DWELLERS OPPOSE DEMOLITION BY RAILWAYS

The Western Railways (WR) woke up after over 35 years with an aim to clear all the slums at Garib Nagar area which is adjacent to Bandra east railway station. The railways issued notices to over 500 slums to empty their homes by January 12, 2017 or else they would demolish all the slum dwellings by January 16 as the slums are illegal structures and the land belongs to the railways. Currently, there are over 500 slum dwellings at Garib Nagar which are over 30 to 35 years old. Over 2,500 people are staying in these structures and have now built structures upto the fifth floor. The structures consist of residential homes, hotels, small scale factories, workshops, retail shops and godowns. So, this demolition drive would swipe out the livelihood of a large number of people and leave them stranded on the road with nowhere to go. A resident of Garib Nagar said, "I have been staying here since 25 years and never has the railways or any authority tried to demolish our slums. Why did the railways suddenly think of clearing the space? And where would we go at such a short notice for our entire family and our whole business is setup in this area." All these years the residents have not paid any kind of rent or land dues to either the railways or any other government body. Saed Ali, a resident said, "We did not pay any rent and we know that we are illegally staying here. But the railways never asked us for any rent all these years. We are ready to move out of here and relocate to a new place and even pay the rent of that place but the railways or the government

should allot us a place." The residents claim to possess all government and identification documents like ration card, electricity bill, voter ID and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) survey receipts. A resident said, "The BMC did a survey of our homes but never cautioned us that we are illegal. Before elections, all the leaders come asking for votes and we vote for them thinking that our homes will be improved but no political party, no leader or no social worker has helped us till date." The residents fearing the destruction of their lives and family did not empty their space but approached the Bombay High Court to fight against the railways. They claimed, "We know we are illegal and we are ready to move. But all we ask is that give us a space somewhere to start our living. Moreover, the land does not entirely belongs to the railways so they have no right to demolish our homes." The railways seem quite adamant about their decision. A senior officer from the Western Railways initially said, "If the residents do not empty the space we will forcefully demolish the structures on January 16. We will take help from the BMC and the police if there is any protest or untoward situation. The land belongs officially to the railways so we have the right to clear it. Relocation of the residents or alloting them a new place is not the responsibility of the railways."

Mahalaxmi Saras: Empowering Women Entrepreneurship

For 14 days in the past 14 years the hinterland folks of various states of India call Bandra their home. They arrive equipped with heritage treasures of our nation which are represented through their art, cuisine, wholesome agro products, medicinal remedies and more interesting experiences. This fusion of cultures is called the Mahalaxmi Saras, however what distinguishes this fair is the fact that all the businesses are managed by women entrepreneurs. The State Government's Rural Livelihoods Mission organises this event, ground work begins with the department’s workers connecting women to join forces and pool their expertise to structure their joint ventures. Most of the women have domestic responsibilities thus working as a team enables them to keep the fire burning in their independent endeavours. Once they establish a firm network they start production on a small scale with the aid of a government starter fund, this initial phase is extremely important as they are not burdened with liabilities. Realistically speaking these women contribute incessantly at their homes, be it in the fields or daily functioning of their households but receive no acknowledgment since there is no direct revenue generated. However with this initiative they accomplish self confidence, are able to support their families financially and most importantly gain financial independence. But the party who stands to gain the most are neither the businesses nor the government authority but the lucky patrons who can avail brilliant products, services and experiences at a stellar price. The Rural Livelihoods Mission takes the baton of leasing the venue, arranging for the transportation and accommodation of the participating teams while they are in Mumbai. This facility is provided without any

charges levied on them, making it possible for them to earn the much needed revenue. City folks can revel within the gambit of products made available at this event, which include indigenous art forms, organic and unpolished agro products, traditional beauty products, unadulterated cuisine flavours, live performances and insightful workshops. In comparison with the corporate version of the same products the packaging may not be at par with the similar products made available at fancy malls, but the price point offered here is a definite leverage for the consumer. Substantiating the age old saying; do not judge a book by its cover. Besides that being aware of the fact that the money is directly handed over to the hand which sows the seeds and reaps the produce is satisfying and justified. The layout of the fair is efficient, spacious and well thought through, parents have the option of allowing their children to engage in frolic while they go about browsing through the various wholesome treats such as raggi, organic honey and jaggery, unpolished rice and pulses and many more components which are essential for health and vitality. After scanning through the various interesting categories, the food hall serves as a perfect place to relax and binge on traditional scrumptious affair. And one must binge because it is indeed rare to get come across, items such as savji mutton, savji chicken, dahi dhapata, vanga bharit, thalipith, puranpoli, modak, solkadi, pomfret fry, prawns fry, fish thali and many more delicacies in the city. The event will be ongoing till the 23rd of January from 10 am to 10 pm at Reclamation grounds; one can stay constantly updated about their programmes and the latest happenings at the fair by following their social media platforms.

Jemimah Rodrigues: Cricket’s next big thing At the young age of 16, Bandra lad Sachin Tendulkar was making headlines for his allround cricketing achievements across the country in various local, state & national tournaments. Given his more-than-outstanding & mature performances with the bat as well as ball, he got called to represent the country at 16 years and 205 days, the youngest cricketer to represent India. With scores of 122*, 49*, 52*, 66* & 87* in six innings, you would imagine these are the Master Blaster’s scores at some point in his career. Well, don’t be fooled! These are Jemimah Rodrigues’ scores in the recently concluded all-India U19 Champions Trophy which was held earlier last month where she led her team to victory. Just 16, this Bandra girl already has added many feathers to her cap. In her latest adventure, the Champions Trophy - held at Jharkhand - she ended the tournament as the highest run-getter (376 runs – her closest competitor at 312) as well as the highest wickettaker at 15. The icing on the cake was when she received the winner’s trophy from India’s most loved cricketer at the moment – MS Dhoni, which for Jemimah was an ho-

noured moment. Starting at the young age of just four, when most girls are getting into kindergarten school, the gifted Jemimah was already receiving training about the nuances of the game from her father, Ivan, who himself is a talented sportsperson albeit an aircraft engineer by profession. “My elder brothers used to play cricket in our locality & I used to tag along with them. That’s how I was introduced to the sport,” and there’s been no looking back since for Jemimah who at 13, represented the Mumbai U19 team, which was no mean feat in itself. She has also represented the India Green team in the Challengers Trophy, in 2014 as well as 2016, which is the premier tournament for women’s cricket in the country where she opened the batting & faced off against the likes of India’s top players like Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur & Jhulan Goswami to name a few; this when she was all of 14. Jemimah’s skill with the bat is a delight to watch with solid technique & the ability to drive the ball through any part of the outfield with much finesse. Besides being the mainstay of her team when it comes to

batting, Jemimah also spins a web with her off break deliveries when she gets the chance. Such has been her consistency with both bat & ball that she has been called up for every national tournament since representing the Mumbai U19 team when she was 13. This avid Rohit Sharma fan manages to score well even in her studies & not just that, she has also represented the city & state U17 hockey team. When asked which game she would choose if she had to make the decision, Jemimah says she wishes she never has to make that decision & hopes she can continue playing both sports for as long as possible. Although just sixteen, Jemimah shows as much maturity off the field & she says if

she has been this successful till date, it’s all because of the blessings of the Lord Jesus who is her constant strength. And when she isn’t slogging it out in the nets or creating new records with both bat and ball, Jemimah likes to strum her favourite tunes on the guitar or just listen to some music. At the rate she is scoring runs & taking wickets with such consistency, a call to the national team may not be too far away. However, Jemimah, who is hungry to represent the nation at international tournaments practically responds saying, “When the time is right, everything will fall in place.” It could all be another Master Blaster in the making! Senior Citizens bombarded with Fake Phone Calls In recent months, an increasing number of senior citizens are receiving phone calls from unknown callers. The modus operandi is to gain the confidence of people, by sounding very official on the phone. Then, when you are off guard, your personal & financial details (which are confidential) are very subtly taken, under some silly pretext. These details are shared and your accounts (credit cards, etc.) are at risk. With the current cashless craze, you can be losing big money. Beware – this could happen to you. Many callers pose as LIC agents and promise to send huge amounts as dividends, by cheque – if you part with information. Then, as they get more familiar with you, a certain processing fee request is made. Dreaming of receiving the promised amounts, many are duped into paying the requested processing fee. It is a number’s game. So, these cheaters earn a huge monthly income –

all tax free. Many affected people have reported these matters to the Police – but are told that nothing much can be done. Concerned authorities need to learn

how to tackle this situation and help citizens. This white collar crime needs to be curbed & eliminated. Ajay Mehta

GARIB NAGAR SLUM DWELLERS OPPOSE DEMOLITION BY RAILWAYS Contd from Page 1 The BMC also agreed to support the railways. A senior civic officer said, "We will support the railways as the structures are illegal and need to be removed for the betterment of Bandra and Mumbai city." However, the Bombay High Court passed a stay order on January 13 directing the railways not to carry out any demolition till further orders. The court also directed the railways to submit the documents proving that the entire land belongs to the railways. The senior officer of the railways then said, "We will follow the court order and submit all the documents. And then as per the court's direction we will clear the space as these slums are illegal." Bandra railway station being a prominent heritage structure has been considered as an important cultural and tourist location of Mumbai. The plan for the beautification of the station by making it pedestrian friendly, attractive and spacious has been on since June 2015. The railways along with the BMC had recently demolished nine slums at Garib Nagar on January 2 without an official notice. The railways just gave an informal pamphlet to one of the slums informing them about the demolition two days prior and then broke the slums. The notice did not have a single official signature of any railway officer. Moreover, the authorities did not even give the residents a chance to empty their homes but demolished all their property and belongings within an hour.

Remembering Sister Christobel Her polished manners and speech, her love for the poor and children, her love for music and a rare ability to keep on going even in her last days are some of the things one remembers when remembering Sr. Christobel, entering that hospital room in the last year you would see her eyes light up and her glowing smile greeting you. We first met when I was coming home one day and encountered a confused elderly lady in the middle of a junction, Justdial gave her number as a aid, that was the first time we spoke, and the start of a beautiful friendship. It seemed God was present in the good work she did, and it felt so good to help her that in time I would go from donating, to collecting donations from friends, to doing wounds too along with them for a while.

Sr. Christobel was a True Rolling Stone, she would hardly get out of hospital in Mumbai and the next moment she would be in Goa about her good work. As Bishop Bosco Penha stated at her funeral mass at St Peter's Church - "No normal person could have done what she did." Indeed, one has to truly be blessed to do what she did. Never one to let a friend down, she ever so often would visit me if by chance I landed up in hospital, she was an amazing conversationalist and had a wit and a charm few today show. A lot of us know that she was extremely talented too, she sang and played the piano and gave us Nun's and Roses (A big thank you to Annabelle and all the people involved in making her dream come true) a show many of us have had the pleasure of enjoying, but few knew that

JANUARY 2017 05 she loved to draw and paint too, she had in fact come out with a cartoon strip called 'Rose Petals' which would get published on her Mother Teresa's Roses Facebook page, she also painted a little, and even put up a painting or two for sale. But most of all, she was an ideal example, an example of humanity, leadership, friendship, positivity, forgiveness, patience and determination, there is so much one could learn when looking at her life, from all that she achieved, to all that it took to achieve it, she was not afraid to get her hands dirty and she led by example. Even in her last year when she was in and out of hospitals, she never took her eyes off her goals, never showing how sick and in pain she really was, God bless her soul. Her work still very much lives on and will shine forever more I am confident with her now looking over it and all her sisters from above, what a woman! It was an honor to have been a part of her life and to have been called a friend. A true inspiration, R.I.P Sr. Christobel my friend. Wayne Lemos

Abis Rizvi – Youth icon & film producer shot dead in Istanbul terror attack! The new year began on a very sad note. The terrorist attack in Istanbul, had an insane man donning a costume of Santa Claus blindly fired at people celebrating the arrival of 2017, killing around 37 people, out of which 2 were Indians. This shocking news turned into sorrow, when in the evening the External Minister Mrs. Sushma Sawraj tweeted that one of the victim was “Mr. Abis Rizvi, the youth icon, film maker and builder from Bandra in particular was no more”. ABOUT: The late Mr. Abis Rizvi, the dynamic youth icon was a down to earth person and a true visionary. His career in real estate development heading the Rizvi builders group was soaring. As a film producer too, he came out with innovative and ‘out-of-the-box’ projects. His maiden film “Roar” - a conflict between tigers and man, was a mature idea and was executed with impressive VFX effects, done by Hollywood technicians. The two projects in the pipeline were ‘Puneet Issar’ – directed HeMan, on the father-son relationship and ‘T for Tajmahal’, a film based on education, with Raveena Tandon playing a cameo. At 49, he was a philanthropist like his father Dr. Akhtar Hasan Rizvi, a former Rajya Sabha MP - who believes in promoting education. Abis was involved in charity and was firm in his belief that while donating money or helping out, it should be done discreetly. The adage in Hindi that translates into “your left hand shouldn’t

know what your right hand is doing,” was his guiding principle. A patriot to the core, Abis ran a voting awareness campaign - stressing on the importance of exercising your vote among youth at the RES in Mumbai before the 2014 general elections. He furthered the Rizvi tradition of being ‘sports enthusiasts with gusto’. Ask anyone in the Mumbai maidans and they will tell you how much he was involved in promoting cricket, at the grassroots level. The Rizvi Springfield and Rizvi College are the top sides in school and college cricket - that stand testimony to his efforts. And it wasn't cricket alone - he donated an electronic scoreboard to Mumbai Hockey Association Stadium. The association officials were struggling to get one - and Abis didn't have to think twice before signing a cheque. For all these reasons, Abis' passing away is mourned by many sections of society as well. As for Abis Rizvi, “You were a gem of a person. It will be impossible to erase the memories of a person, whose smile was as infectious as his congeniality. RIP, Abis Rizvi Sir. May Allah give courage to His family members to bear such massive loss.” BURIAL & CONDOLENCE: Mr. Abis Rizvi, secretary of Rizvi Education Society (R.E.S.) and C.E.O. of Rizvi Builder’s group was brutally killed in the terrorist attack by a violent and insane group named ‘Daesh’, the word sounding similar to the Arabic word, ‘Dahes’, which means ‘sowers of discord’ or hatred amongst people and

Friends and relatives carry the coffin of Abis Rizvi for burial at a graveyard enemy of mankind. The late Mr. Abis Rizvi was buried at Rehmatabad Cemetry, Mazgaon, on 4th Jan 2017. A condolence meeting was held on 5th Jan 2017, 7pm at Rizvi College of Arts/Science/Commerce. Those present included politicians: Mr. Sanjay Nirupam, (President, Mumbai Congress), Adv. Majid Memon (NCP) - who read out a condolence message from Mr. Sharad Pawar, Municipal Councilor Karen D’Mello, Asif Zakaria (Congress), Asif Bamla (NCP) and lot of Shiv Sena , BJP & MNS members. Apart from films star’s Raveena Tandon, Salim Khan, Tabu & Chunky Pandey; there were direc-

tors Abbas Mastan, Puneet Issar, Naved Jaffery, Imran Hashmi, Sohail Khan, actor Ali Coolie Mirza, just to name of few. There were a host of principals: Dr. M. Z. Farooqui, Principal (Rizvi College A/S/C), Dr. Akhtar Chauhan (Rizvi Architecture College) and Dr. Kalim Khan, Director (Rizvi Management College) and social workers. The Turkish Consulate to India was also present. She paid rich tributes and strongly “condemned” the terrorist attack in Turkey, on behalf of her government. The case for a ‘Rua António Pessoa’ in Bandra ‘Tis the Season – for renaming! As we recently “Celebrated Bandra”, I had the good fortune to interact with one of the brightest contemporary young historians in Bombay, Alisha Sadikot. As I learnt from Ms. Sadikot, the first written account of the name of our suburb is from the writing of Faria e Souza, who, in 1505 wrote about “Bandor”. In the present season of renaming airports, roads & train stations, with an obvious slant towards a certain section of society, it made me wonder as to why we here in Bandra have no real and tangible reference to our original colonial history. Most local history in India is verbal, passed down from generation to generation. Sadly, we are on the verge of losing a lot of this, due to the systematic eradication and desecration of our colonial past. On a recent visit to Daman (or “Damaun”, as my dear East Indian girlfriend would rightly say), I was pleasantly surprised to see a police ‘chowki’ have the sign “Cabina Policia Costeria” in Portuguese on it. I was rather impressed that they had not only used a language of their past, but were actually allowed to use it.

Bandra has a distinct culture, history and heritage. It would do us well to honor that. It made me ponder on how we could have a reminder of the pre-British and preMaratha era history of Bandra, which has been pretty much forgotten now. Bandra was a possession of the Portuguese crown from 1534 till 1548. From 1568 till 1739, it was under the possession of Portuguese Jesuits. Between 1548 and 1568, we had a 20 year window, during which is belonged to neither, but rather was the personal possession of a certain Antonio Pessoa, and then after his death, that of his widow, Isabella Botelha. Not much is know about Pessoa, other than he was a captain in the Portuguese military and was given Bandora and other areas by the then Governor of Portuguese India as a reward for his military services, for the duration of what is known as "Two Lives", his and his spouse's. After the death of his widow Isabella Botelha, Bandora passed on to the Jesuits, until the Maratha invasion of 1739, thus ending Portuguese rule in present day Bandra. Should we honor any history during the period of 1534 till 1548, one would be

CLOCKWISE: 1) One of the last reminders of ‘Bandora’ seen on the top of Mount Mary Steps 2) One of the last vestiges of an autonomous Bandra still seen on BJ Road accused of kowtowing to a foreign power or their then crown. Anything between 1568 and 1739 would be seen as a religious bias – God forbid there is a Manuel Gomes Street in Bandra. Perhaps for this reason itself, we have all but forgotten the name, the “Apostle of Bandora”. We, however, have the opportunity to reference a brief 20 year period of relative neutrality, during the days of Antonio and Isabella. The couple was independent from the crown and the church of the day, and today, we live on and love the land that was once theirs. It would be apt, therefore, to perhaps have a “Rua António Pessoa” in Bandra. Not a ‘Chowk’, not a ‘Marg’, not a street or road; but a “Rua”, as in the ‘Lingua Franca’ of our own past. In honoring that period, and the

names of two individuals, whom have been lost to the sands of times, we would be honoring the roots of our present day culture. There are few reminders left of the time when we were still known as “Bandora”, and when, in the not too distant past, we were autonomous (as least as municipality) from the rest of Bombay. As names are replaced randomly and indiscriminately today, perhaps the average ‘Bandraite’ should speak up, and for once, we can have a name change in the right direction – the direction of preserving history & culture of our area. For let us not forget, instead of ‘Sandra from Bandra’, many of us, self included, might have been chasing ‘Pandora de Bandora’. Debasish Chakraverty

RENAMING PLACES & ROADS!!! The practice of renaming is often a political gimmick. Or it may be some individual politician’s fetish to grab mileage. The familiar ritual has existed for years. Cities, airports, railway stations, roads are frequently renamed by the civic authorities, by politicians. A recent case is West Bengal. As Mamata Banerjee awaits the Cabinet’s nod to rename the State, we continue to call it by its old name, West Bengal. Madras was rechristened Chennai. Bangalore – became Bengaluru, Bombay – Mumbai. We may cheerfully argue “what’s in a name?” Obviously there is a lot in a name for the ritual to survive, in fact, thrive. Roads however are the most popular targets for renaming. Take Perry Cross road next to where I live. Until the late 1970s, actress Baby Nanda lived on Perry Cross in her massive villa. That road was renamed to honour her renowned father – Master Vinayak during her stay. Then parts of Carter Road are renamed after composer Naushad & director Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Both were long time residents of the sea front. If you ask an Ola cab to take you to Master Vinayak Marg, he will be clueless. The name Perry Cross is still in usage. Thankfully there are few exceptions to the rule of politicians hijacking credit. Local corporators have risen to the occasion following fan and family initiatives. This is especially true in the case popular film industry legends. Up on Pali Hill is the Rajendra Kumar Chowk. It is close to his former residence Dimple. Not to forget that Pali Hill had been renamed, Nargis Dutt

Marg. There is no road yet, however named after the iconic Madhubala or Meena Kumari or Sanjeev Kumar… On December 24th, playback singer Rafi’s 92nd birth anniversary, 16th Road Khar became Rafi Marg. A vote of thanks is due to the Rafi Foundation. On January 1st, 2017 maestro S.D. Burman’s memory got a fresh boost. A local fan club named after him managed to get a chowk on the junction of Khar Pali and 14th road. Whether the name will stick or not, Sachin Deb Burman’s fans have a reason to celebrate. Renaming a road, whoever initiates, is a token gesture after all. And Rafi saab, S.D. Burman will live as long as melody lives. This brings me to January 8, 2017. My father Bimal Roy’s 51st death anniversary. I ruminate on this strange yet happy ritual of name changing on the eve of a tiny alley being renamed after my father that noon. Sometime in 2002, I approached Shri Sunil Dutt, then our local MP. He held my father in great regard. That appeal was accepted at once. The problem however arose when we had to pinpoint a road worthy of renaming. Mount Mary Road residents, understandably, were against renaming it. Ideally that was the road. My father lived in No. 5 Mount Mary Road from 1953 till 1966. The issue dragged on. And, I put it behind me. Out of the blue I heard that the proposal has finally been sanctioned. Some others too heard the news. That little lane off the main Mount Mary Road was adorned with an elegant Plaque declaring it BIMAL ROY PATH. It is

unnecessary for me to add how delighted I am at the prospect of a road named after my father. It feels wonderful that the lane opposite the demolished Godiwala where we grew up, is now known as BIMAL ROY PATH from January 8th 2017. It is a narrow unnoticed downhill lane in the famous Mount Mary area. Perhaps quite appropriate too. Godiwala Bungalow has vanished forever – but it is the same spot. I realise, renaming the road alone will not keep my father’s memory alive. His unforgettable

films will keep the lamp burning forever in public memory. Does the musical chair played with names matter to the general public? As train loads of weary commuters rush to work on a busy crowded street do they have time to notice a plaque or the road sign? “For they have no time to stand & stare!” That is the million rupee question… Rinki Roy Bhattacharya

QTube Café: Thinking Out Of The Box The artist brings something into the world that didn’t exist before, and he does it without destroying something else. – John Updike, 1932 If you happen to pass the prominent Wildcraft showroom on your way to S.V. Road, you might notice a new addition to the line of shops that reside there. This however, is no ordinary shop or restaurant. Nestled between two furniture shops, lies a bright sign that spells out the words ‘QTube Café’. Reminiscent of the signage’s that host station names at various stations, this café has a similar diamond-shaped signboard. QTube Café began its journey on the 2nd of October, 2016. An initiative by the NSPA (Natural Streets for Performing Arts), QTube Café’s aim is to promote live music, theatrical plays and art. The NSPA is well known for staging live performances at places like Carter Road, Bandstand and Mumbai Metro stations. Outdoor places such as these restrict the kind of shows that can be performed. Having an indoor space allows versatility in terms of various art forms like poetry recitation, showcasing various paintings and art and theatrical plays, as well as live music performances. QTube Café will also provide a platform for budding musicians and fresh talent in the indie music scene. That’s where the NSPA plays an important role, as well. Founded in October, 2012, by Mr. Ajit Dayal; the Natural Streets for Performing Arts is a non-profit organization that has dedicated itself towards bringing the culture of street performances to India as well as supporting the livelihood of independent artists. This foundation bridges the gap between the common man and performers, giving an individual a platform to showcase his or her talent and discover the magical side of street performances that have gained a huge amount of popularity abroad. The NSPA prides itself in its thirst for discovery, be it new spaces for performances or artists. They have signed a whole set of resident artists and continue doing so, giving an equal opportunity to all. The main aspect they look out for in an artist is the performance. Being

a performer means connecting with the people standing around, a good amount of talent and a whole lot of positive energy. Artists range from musicians, theatre artists, dancers and painters, with no defining genre (except Bollywood music, please.) QTube Café in Bandra is a unique café in certain aspects. Firstly, there is no food served here. Yes, you read that right. You can walk in and spend countless hours in this café with a cup of steaming coffee, served free of cost. Yes, you read that right again. Free coffee and 2 hours of free WiFi! If that hasn’t made your day, there are three colourful bookshelves stocked with a variety of books of different genres. In addition to that, there are multiple board games like Monopoly, Business, Jenga and a favorite among every age group, Uno. This café is a brilliant initiative by the NSPA & is supported by Quantum AMC, an asset management & mutual fund company that is the backbone of the NSPA. A person could spend an entire day here without spending a single rupee. The walls are adorned with paintings, including a Pink Floyd doodle & a Beatles wall clock. There are chairs & tables lined up against the walls of the café that have plug points for charging your mobile or laptop. NSPA artists begin their performances by 5 pm on all days except Tuesdays, with each day consisting of something new in terms of art. In the corner of the café lie a few instruments that you could just pick up & play, like a guitar or drums. The NSPA aims at building up a whole lot of talent & recognition for their artists by hosting live performances in this café. So drop by & sip on some coffee while you work or grab an encyclopedia, novel or comic book from one of the shelves and lounge in one of the bean bags strewn around, no one’s going to judge you. Bring your friends and spend an afternoon without your mobile phones and with board games, instead. Come support the NSPA artists when they perform and listen to a variety of genres in music. This beautiful concept, situated in the heart of Bandra, surely is a boon. Nayan Sreenivasan

American Express Bakery: Fermenting Bandra's bond with bread since the 1930s Often in the midst of a multi generation family managed business one can hear whispers of internal squabbles; however our meeting with Mr. Emil Carvalho of American Express Bakery proved the trend wrong. A wonder example of unity and teamwork is proffered as the budding 5th generation of the family spearheads their digital presence and Emil's sibling who resides across vast water bodies in the USA shares desert recipes amalgamating sweetness not just into the patisseries section but also into the essence of the business. Started in the year 1908 by Mr. Francesco Carvalho, what we know as American Express Bakery got its name due to the barrage of American carrier ships it used to supply products such as bread, imported butter, cold cuts and other dairy products. The inaugural store opened at Falkland road in Grant road and was followed by their stores permeating throughout Bombay in places such as Colaba, Claire road, Cumballa Hill, Bandra and Santacruz. The exact opening date for the Bandra store is not archived however it can be deduced that it opened shop before Bandra Gymkhana was established which happened in 1935. The then manager had applied for a supplier contract when Bandra Gymkhana had opened its gates to the residents of Bandra. A flourishing business with great products, many of which have only recently begun to attract the fancy of urban consumer such as whole wheat and multigrain breads was readily available 7 decades ago at their stores. The foresight and precise business acumen of the Mr. Francesco Carvalho and his sons is commendable states his grandson Emil "They realised the future potential of places like Bandra and Santacruz which were even not part of the mainland at that point in time, their vision keeps us driven to explore newer avenues. Their meticulous nature in terms of product quality & customer experience is a benchmark which we as a company still adhere to & implement in our daily operations." Coming back to the present, American Express Bakery in Bandra had a total makeover which was revealed on the 3rd of January 2017 with a special get together to thank their well wishers and supporters. The revamp was done in order to enhance the visibility of the place and make it spacious especially for the youth. They will even begin delivering products and thus cater to BKC, Khar and Santacruz as well. AEB have a loyal customer base and have carved a niche for themselves, Emil elaborates about their code and future plans "Our philosophy is to be proud of what we do and serve quality products to our customers without compromising the ingredi-

ents. Baking runs in our family and that is our prerogative." But all was not always as smooth as it appears today, after establishing a strong network of stores Mr. Carvalho and his sons were badly affected by the Second World War. The limited supply of raw material due to wartimes resulted in them having to call the curtains on a couple of store. Detrimental obstacles came in their way in the form of death, between 1947 and 1954 all the three founding members of American Express Bakery passed away. The reins shifted and Mrs. Bertha Carvalho (Joseph Carvalho’s wife & grandmother of Emil & Yvan) took over the business in the year 1955 & ensured it continued to tread forward. The next paradigm shift happened when they decided to go into wholesale manufacturing of bread in the early 1990s under the leadership of Emil and Yvan. They used to supply bread to areas as far as American Express Bakery at Hill Road Matunga and Powai, the high point was in 2104 when the volume of flour used in production peaked at 1 ton a day. The whole sale bread market is not well structured and as a result American Express Bakery scaled down their production over a period of time. As of today they produce 300 kilograms of bread, according to Emil "The quantity produced is not our prerogative, but the identity of our bread means the world to us, a big chunk of the credit goes to the workforce. They are a dedicated lot; I remember a picture in the newspaper when the 26/11 attack was underway. In the frame was the Salvation Army hostel which is located behind Taj Mahal hotel, considering we supply bread to them it struck me that the delivery person in spite of the looming danger made his way there and delivered bread." The bakery as the name suggests dishes out various variations of loaves; the deserts The Carvalho's are intricate in terms of their composition, which is proved when one digs into their Viennese truffle torte and Coconut Meringue Cake to name a couple. The sandwiches are prepared in house and its foundation is firm since the bread used is baked specially keeping in mind its end objective which is to encapsulate fillings such as apple tomato chutney, roasted mutton, smoked chicken, garlic roast and fig mint. Although the decor is new and their menu more diverse with delivery options, the core craft of the American Express Bakery is still intact as they follow the recipes which has been passed down from one generation to the next since the year 1930 for products such as macron, plum cake, wine biscuits and of course the bread. Thus it is safe to say that AEB's shelves do not simply mount slice bread but also a slice of Bandra's history and roots. Apostolic Carmel excel in National Sporting events When it comes to girls’ sporting events, Apostolic Carmel High School has always been at the forefront among Bandra schools producing sportspersons in various sporting disciplines. In the last two months itself, the school has garnered many awards through its footballers, athletes and even gymnasts. Earlier in December, Gauhar Mithaiwala and Florian Pereira represented Maharashtra at the DSO (Divisional Sports Office) national games held in Manipur. Both started every game in the playing eleven in the league, although the team narrowly missed the bus to the semi-finals on inferior goal-difference, losing out by a solitary goal. Earlier in August, it was both Gauhar and Florian’s heroics that helped their school to victory in the DSO district finals. While Gauhar slotted in her penalty kick in the shoot-out, it was Florian who made a vital save in the last spot kick to ensure their school bagged the district title. Incidentally, the adept central midfielder Gauhar also played a vital role in the state team at the DSO nationals held in Andaman & Nicobar Islands last year. Besides,

both Florian and Gauhar have also been vital cogs in the wheel for their school hockey team. If that wasn’t enough, Nirja Chavan, another of the school’s excellent sportspersons shone in the limelight winning top honours in the DSO zonal finals in the individual rhythmic gymnastics discipline. Having to perform with five props - ribbons, rope, hoops, ball and clubs – in the individual event, the supple and elegant Nirja, who has been training for the last four years managed to bag the gold medal. Besides, she has also qualified for the national level event organised by the Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation of India to be held later next month. Interestingly, it was her father who pushed her to join the sport because she was always full of energy. The move seems to be a perfect fit for Neerja who enjoys every moment of it, training for around 40 hours a week with instructor Varsha Upadhye as she aims to qualify for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2018 and then and more importantly, the Olympics in 2020. However, Nirja seems to be taking it

one step at a time focusing on the upcoming national event at the moment as also her SSC board exams. She closely follows Indian gymnast Kshipra Joshi as also Russian twin sisters Dina and Arina Averina, although her favourite is current Olympic champion Margarita Mamun. Nirja is also a qualified judge in the execution aspect of scoring and recently overlooked the inaugural artistic gymnastics event organised by MSSA, for all age groups right from U14 to U8. Nirja says,” My school principal Sr. Suchitra and teachers have constantly supported me and I’d like to keep them happy by doing my best and

bringing up not just my school name but my country’s as well.” In the annual MSSA inter-school athletic meet held in December, Chenelle Dias brought laurels to her school bagging the Junior Championship in the Girls U10 age group as also winning the individual championship in the same age category with her superior sprint performance in the 50m and 100m races. With students like these, the Apostolic Carmel School seems to moving in the right direction with its students excelling in academics as well as sports. Valerian D'Costa

EDITORIAL

Letters to the Editor ILLEGAL ENCROACHMENT SEASIDE CEMETERY Seaside Cemetery at Bandra West is facing encroachment along its boundary wall. Illegal and unauthorized structures are being built with the wall as its support. Two shanty tenements have been in existence from before and now currently two more have come up, raising by one more storey. The drainage from these tenements flows into the cemetery. The Management has lodged a complaint with BMC but no action taken as yet. The Corporator is Catholic and aware of this nuisancical development. In spite of all these complaints the BMC demolition department has yet to act and erase the shanty hutments encroaching the cemetery wall. With elections due next month and Corporators busy campaigning, there is very little chance of any demolition taking place. BMC must act in the interest of citizens demands and not get mired in party politics. Amar Singh "SANTA CRUZ" NOT "SANTACRUZ" I have noticed that newspapers today, such as the TOI and the Mumbai Mirror repeatedly spell the name of "Santa Cruz" (the suburb) as "Santacruz". rect, as the name is "Santa Cruz". It is two words, not one. Regrettably, I noticed that the Bandra Buzz has followed suit. In my article about the history of Santa Cruz airport published in your December issue, "Santa Cruz" was duly replaced by "Santacruz". Having been born and raised in Santa Cruz, I would appreciate if at least the Bandra Buzz spells the name correctly. We already have had so many unwanted name changes as of late, which robs us of our heritage and history. Please let us use the correct historical name until the "powers that be" steal that from us as well! Debasish Chakraverty Email your letters to news.bandrabuzz@gmail.com

NEW BEGINNINGS Dear Reader, January is the time for new beginnings. Either you make it happen, let others make it happen – or wonder what happened. Yes, it is time for action, with the keyword being ‘now’. Bandra is buzzing with renewed vigour – socially & politically. And... there is a fine line between these two aspects. It is now or never! The ‘Queen Of The Suburbs’ is about to lose her crown. We’ve let it happen, due to wrong decisions and limited choices; during the past decades. Civic amenities, in spite of enough funds – are poorly co-ordinated with BMC drain & road repairs. Power play by our elected representatives for the sake of solely focussing on vote banks – is prevalent everywhere. The ancient ‘divide & rule’ policy is put into action, on a local level. Then, Bandra has her extremely diverse localities – possibly the widest of divides, the super rich living in luxury towers & the ‘hungry have-nots’ from the slums. In this scenario, it is the middle class who are most affected: crime, rash traffic situations, dangerous foot-

paths and a lot more. Yet, the hope of a ‘Better’ Bandra is just around the corner. The BMC elections is our only chance to choose our local representative, who will represent us at the BMC – to get our neighbourhood issues resolved. You may never get a better chance again. So, choose wisely – someone who is knowledgeable enough and has the will to create conditions that are for the betterment of all. Change is important, but this change shouldn’t make things worse – it should improve Bandra. Let’s make Bandra a ‘super suburb’, by taking hold of our current opportunity for ‘new beginnings’. Wishing all our readers a “Happy Republic Day 2017”! Jai Hind!

There were 27 online entries, with almost all having reasonably good standards. Judges (from out of Bandra, for un-biased decisions) found it hard to select the 8 winners – and then choose the 3 winners from among them, for cash prizes. The balance 5 winners got consolation prizes. Interestingly, many contestants told us that people from all communities had helped towards making cribs – as a team effort. There were secular scenes – without any parallel. Hence, this crib contest has created community connect – like no other. And... the winners are: 1st Prize – Rs 15,000/- : Zodiac FC Boys, Rajan – Theme: Come be an Angel of the Lord 2nd Prize – Rs 10,000/- : Fr. JANUARY 2017 15

MEICOCAI Chairman celebrates Grand ‘Golden Wedding’ 2nd January 2017 saw an event in Bandra – that was remarkable in many ways. At the Bandra Gymkhana Tennis Courts, Mumbai East Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MEICOCAI) Chairman Neil Creado and his ‘Golden Bride’ Ingrid repeated history after 50 years of togetherness, along with their children, grandchildren and an exclusive gathering of family & friends. Neil Creado is the eldest son of the late Victor Gabriel Creado, known as the ‘Duke of Marol’ and the late Blossom. Ingrid is the daughter of the late Leo Rodrigues, former Mayor of Bandra and the first Indian Administrator General of the High Court of Bombay and the late Bridget. The Golden Wedding mass at St. Andrew’s College Chapel, was concelebrated by Oswald Cardinal Gracias & Bishop Bosco Penha, Bishop John Rodrigues, along with other priests at 5:15pm – to renew their wedding vows. Neil accompanied by their youngest son Daykin on the guitar, sang “We watch the sunrise” in thanksgiving to the Lord. The ‘Golden Couple’ then gracefully walked down the aisle, amidst the congregation of close family & friends. The reception was graced by the presence

of His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias, His Lordship Bishop John Rodrigues and a number of priests. Chairman of the Bandra Gymkhana, Mr. Darryl D’Monte, the Santa Cruz Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana, Mr Joaquim Reis, the Bombay Gymkhana, Mr Darius Udwadia and the Willingdon Sports Club [opp. the Race Course], Mr Homi Khushrukhan and their respective wives were also present. At the reception, the couple’s entry – with the traditional ‘East Indian Umbrella’ to an exclusive gathering around the dance floor, was unique and most impressive. The ‘cake cutting’ & ‘champagne popping’, kick-started the celebrations. The toast was raised by their eldest son Craig, daughter in law Chrisann and their four beautiful grandchildren Isabella, Victoria, Elizabeth and Alexandra. Neil replied very confidently to the toast – even giving free tips for married couples to make it to their golden weddings. Most remarkable was Neil Creado, as he took on the baton of epitomizing the past and bringing it into the present in graceful grandeur; as it showcased their lives till today - with his illustrious wife and family. The power point

presentation was appreciated by all – as it brought back memories of the 60’s. Ingrid, his golden wife permitted her leader and captain to say everything on her behalf, as he told the world how happy a man he was today, besides the woman in his life - the wind beneath his wings. His sprightly steps during the grand march, was a sight to see. What was envious and yet thrilling, was to see Neil, at 78 years of age, dance the fast jive with his daughter - and his quick step movements. It was joy in action. The bouquet ceremony & chair-lifting memories will be always em-

bedded in our minds. The elite crowd enjoyed networking with long lost family & friends. It was bonhomie at its best. Many MEICOCAI Directors were present at this enjoyable gathering – that had a lot of camaraderie; accompanied with good authentic East Indian food and the best beverages available. With the live band – providing great music, it was the perfect setting for an entertaining & enjoyable evening. Our sincere wish is that Neil & Ingrid continue to have health & happiness. Rtn.
