East Indian Masala Queen

Entrepreneur Sandra Blanchette has helped make your food tastier for over 25 years

E-paper: www.issuu.com/bandrabuzz | 16 pages | Price: ` 2

Away from the hustle-bustle of Hill Road, Bandra, is a nondescript lane which is barely noticeable except for a sign-board indicating Chapel Road. Wending one’s way through the maze of quaint, simple dwellings, with lilting English pop music waing through the air, the place is a beehive of activity. anks to the enterprising zeal of Sandra Blanchette who has been churning out delectable home-made masalas & pickles for the last 25 years. She is indeed one-of-a-kind. Quality-conscious, Sandra personally grinds all the ingredients to a fine paste before putting it in neatly labeled packets. In this fastpaced life where the super mom oen has to do a balancing act between the home & a job, Sandra’s low-priced ready made Vindaloo or fish masala comes as a boon. One does not have to bother about shopping for the chillies, garlic & other spices. No wonder she has become a household name & caters to customers as far as Byculla & Chembur. e taste of the pudding lies in the eating, goes the adage & so personally sampling Sandra’s products I can vouch for its authentic taste. Hard-working & sincere, Sandra’s shop a few meters away from her house is opened between 9.30 am to 6.30 pm without an aernoon break. “Despite these long hours, people sometimes turn up at my house at odd hours in the night to buy the stuff. Do you think it is right?”

Sandra says. “In fact, one person surfaced at 2 in the morning to buy the items on the way to the airport! Earlier, I used to oblige people but now I refuse,” she adds. “Actually, it was my brother who encouraged me in this enterprise,” Sandra recalls. “Initially, I started with the masalas & later diversified into pickles like prawn & Bombill pickles. Sometimes people who have migrated & come down for holidays like to take these flavors when they go back,” she remarks. In fact, Sandra has received many offers to export her products abroad but she staunchly refuses to do so as it will affect her quality, she says. “I am content with my local clientele & will not be able to cope with a larger market as the quality will suffer,” according to Sandra. Of course, her elderly mother & aunt, lend a helping hand by painstakingly cleaning the Bombill fish, which comes fresh all the way from Uttan, Bhayandar. Aer this fish is cleaned & cut, the masala is applied to it, making it a popular item. Culinary talent runs in the family as her sister, Jennifer D’Silva makes lovely Christmas sweets like marzipans, besides Easter eggs. An excellent blend of sugar & spice and everything nice, surely this family is a name to reckon with in Bandra. Sushila Soares Pic Courtesy: Nelvin John

Veteran Bandra journalist Alfred D’Cruz honoured

Late Mr. Alfred D'Cruz

The son of Alfred D'Cruz, Sunil, received the prestigious Late Laxmidas Borkar Memorial Award and Lifetime Achievement Award on his late father's behalf The late Mr. Alfred D'Cruz, veteran journalist and a prominent resident of Bandra from the late 1960s, was recently honoured posthumously with the Laxmidas Borkar Memorial Award for Journalism. The prestigious award was presented by the Bori Development Trust, Goa, to his son, Sunil. Having contributed to the enrichment in the field of journalism for 65 years, the ‘Eternal Newsman’ Mr. D’Cruz also bagged posthumously the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Journalist Association of India (JAI) in New Delhi in September 2012. He was the first Indian sub-editor of Times of India, Mumbai in 1947, selected by the then British Editor, Sir Francis Low. At Times of India, Mr. D’Cruz worked with the dozens of journalism such as Khushwant Singh, M.J. Akbar, M.V. Kamath, Girilal Jain, Behram Contractor, R.K. Laxman and Mario Miranda. Working at a time when computers, internet and email were yet to become the buzzwords, he toiled zealously, sometimes

until 4 a.m., in the hot metal press giving his go-ahead to proofs and photographic blocks, so that people could enjoy reading their newspapers along with their hot morning cup of tea or coffee. Usually working at the late night shift, he edited and brought out numerous Times editions. Moreover, when Times of India completed 147 years in 1985, he brought out a special eight-page supplement titled ‘Down the corridors of the Times’ which was a research historical study of the making of the over century-old newspaper from its inception. “In the early 1940s, when I came from Goa to study at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, the area around Hill Road already had churches such as St. Peter's and St. Andrew's. I felt as though I was in Goa seeing the beautiful cottages surrounded by gardens with trees and flowers,” the stalwart of the Times Group for 40 years, who passed away in Bandra on June 1, 2012, would happily recall. The other part of Bandra, the area

around Linking Road and Pali Hill, dotted with a few buildings, was densely forested. Later they were turned into open fields for the cultivation of fruits and vegetables," Mr. D'Cruz who has written the history of St. Teresa's Church, Bandra, would go down memory lane. “I saw the construction of R.D. National College which was given the finishing touches in 1949, in the area that later came to be known as Town Planning Scheme (TPS) III. Opposite was a twostorey SVD House set up in 1948 that was later pulled down to accommodate the present building. Thereafter, around the mid-1960s the construction of residential buildings started off Linking Road.” “In the earlier days, Bandra consisted of several villages such as Kantwadi, Waroda, Sherly, Rajan, Pali and Chuim. A few of them like Pali village still retain their old world charm, Mr. D’Cruz would recount. Mr. Alfred D’Cruz, who was always fascinated about the places where he lived and worked, documented the same. He was

the co-author with late Prof. Patrocino de Souza of the book of his native village, titled ‘Saligao: Focus on a picturesque Goan village’. The book, illustrated by Mario Miranda, is in the Library of Congress, Washington, and 20 major Universities in the U.S.A. Seeing Bandra develop from open fields, Mr. D’Cruz contributed towards community service. His dream of having a well-paved 16th Road (since it was a busy one-way street) materialised with the cooperation of civic officials. Through his untiring efforts, water supply to the area also improved. He also co-ordinated with railway officials to have additional foot over-bridges at the harbour line platform at Bandra station way back in the 1980s. The man who was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge will always be remembered as one of Bandra's most distinguished personalities. Sunil D'Cruz

Dubai Textile Tycoon – Plans to make Bandra ‘the fashion capital of Mumbai’ At first glance, you may never imagine what’s bubbling in Hitesh Purohit’s mind. But ,as we got to know him; a lot unfolded to reveal things, that Bandra will have to prepared for in the coming years. His parent company is Regal Group, Dubai – which has been successfully operational for more than 60 years. Hitesh is the President of the PAN India operations, known as Raj Kiran Fashion Pvt. Ltd.; now operational in Bandra. Hitesh told us candidly about his vision for Bandra and India. He spoke about how has seen some of our Bandra-based celebrities shopping for clothes in South Mumbai, in the immediate past – and how gradually this mindset is changing. Now, many top Bollywood stars & other celebrities tend to look at local outlet first, as standards are improving towards international norms. Those who are fashion-conscious are extremely happy to use the ‘Raj Kiran’ brand of kurtis & legins in the western range (mainly used by college students and evening wear); with full-embroidery sarees in the Indian range, for formal wear. Being an importer of textiles,

he would like to take advantage of this trend to make Bandra the fashion capital of Mumbai. He plans to open outlets at prime Bandra fashion areas – i.e. showrooms at Hill Road, etc.; under the ‘Raj Kiran’ brand. His company strength is that current fashion trends are closely observed – and business is built to tailor-make products around specific needs. Hitesh plans to build a strong base in Bandra, as his centre-point – and then expand to other satellite areas. He remembers how Elco Market started small – and evolved to something much bigger, with surrounding areas growing rapidly to international standards. He also observed how many fashion outlets, showrooms and malls have sprung across the Linking Road area – many of them being international brands. His vision of an annual fashion exhibition across Bandra (on the lines of the Dubai Festival), where people will flock to find the best clothes collection – is very focussed on his mind. And… Hitesh is determined to make it happen. We wish Hitesh all the best in his fashion business endeavours. Hari Motwani

Life’s True Stories

movement in the 1970's that he realised his calling and has since been active in movements for housing rights of the urban poor, for communal harmony against injustice, unsustainable development, miltarism and nuclear nationalism. 'Jai Bhim Comrade', Patwardhan’s fourteen-year long project provides a rich insight of a socio-economic and political movement against the caste system and it's never-ending atrocities.

Documentary filmmaker Anand Patwardhan has long questioned many controversial issues of social and political life in India. His award-winning and internationally acclaimed films like 'War and Peace', 'Bombay: Our City' and many more bear testimony to the same. He never really aspired to be a film-maker. It was only during the anti-Vietnam war

Your recent film ‘Jai Bhim Comrade’ focuses on the everyday oppression of the Dalit caste. Please elaborate. 'Jai Bhim Comrade' took us 14 years to shoot. It was triggered by the suicide of a friend, Vilas Ghogre, a poet musician who lived in Mulund. Vilas was from a Dalit caste and was a Marxist when I met him in the early 80’s. I was then producing 'Bombay:Our City' on the slumdwellers of Bombay who were facing demolitions and eviction. Vilas had composed and sung a song which became the backbone of our film Bombay Our City. However, the only visuals I had of him were from that one song recorded in 1983. I tried to understand why Vilas had hung himself. Five days before this event, on the 11th of July 1997, the police had killed 10 unarmed Dalits at the Ramabai Colony in Ghatkoper because they had come out on the street to protest the fact that in the dark of night someone had desecrated the statue of their leader Dr. Ambedkar by garlanding it with footwear. I asked myself this. If the residents of Malabar Hill or Bandra West had come out to protest something, would our police have greeted them with lethal gunfire? Clearly there are two sets of

rules in our city & in our country. One for the well-to-do & one for the poor & powerless. So I decided to explore these issues further. I followed the court cases that began after the police firing at Ramabai Colony. And as Vilas was no more, I filmed with other Dalit protest poets & musicians. I also began to read the amazing writings of Dr. Ambedkar & research the pernicious caste system that has afflicted India since ages. What emerged in the end was 'Jai Bhim Comrade', a musical with political & social overtones. All your films have a unique touch of ideology as well as originality. Is there any target audience in particular? I am not an advertizing agent who targets particular consumers (washing powder for housewives, condoms for the youth, etc). I make films for people like myself who can learn from & perhaps even enjoy getting a closer insight into lives & events they knew only from a great distance. What we usually see on TV is fantasy violence, fanatasy romance &, these days, even fantasy horror. Personally I’m deadly bored with this so I imagine that many others are as well. How did you overcome the obstacles that came your way? When you set yourself the task of not embellishing the truth, of exposing stark realities as they exist, there will always be obstacles. Almost all my films faced censorship issues but luckily our Constitution guarantees freedom of expression & I was able to invoke this spirit in court. In all, we won 7 court cases both in the High Court & the Supreme Court so that my films got the right to be screened without any cuts. Even Doordarshan, our national broadcaster was forced to telecast these films after the courts ruled that this was in the public interest. The fact that the State & the fundamentalists

ACTIVISM have tried to suppress my work proves that they found such work threatening, i.e., effective. Since time immemorial, India has been looked upon as a rich country in cultural & social diversity. Where do you think, our country, India stands today? We are at an important crossroads. Economically we are on the path of disaster trying to imitate failed powers like the USA. The environment cannot suffer more greed. A country like India cannot imitate the Western consumer model (more cars, more air conditioners, more skin whitening cream) without destroying itself. Socially we still suffer from our feudal past & the longevity of the caste system is proof of this. Politically the once secular Congress Party has already committed hara-kiri. One further wrong step & we could descend into religious fascism, a far worse proposition than the corruption that everyone is so preoccupied with today. Many people tend to pursue their rights & forego their duties as Indian citizens. So how can the eyes of the public be opened to the shocking reality of the lives of the underprivileged & the down-trodden? If you are asking whether a film can change people's perceptions enough to make them act differently in real life, there is no clear answer. On a small scale I have seen this happen, but the truth is that my films are not seen widely enough to make a real dent in our system. So the real battle is to reach out more, step by step. The screening in Bandra is one such tiny step. All this may make the film sound weighty & dull but believe me it is also entertaining. So along with the sorrow & the anger you will also hear some laughter. (As told to Joshua Norris)

HOW TO PREVENT, MAINTAIN & REVERSE THE MOST IMPORTANT SIGNS OF SKIN AGEING? * Dryness - Older skin is unable to retain moisture because it has fewer sweat and oil glands. How to prevent ageing? * Limit sun exposure - Applying a broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF30 or higher, wearing a hat and loosely fitted clothes.

Dr. Khusboo Kadri MD (Skin and VD) Director & Consulting Trichologist, Dermatologist & Cosmetologist at Trichoderm Clinic

What is skin ageing? Ageing occurs due to changes of skin structure and loss of elasticity in the skin over time. It may be a part of physiological aging or it may be due to the effects of ultraviolet radiation, usually through exposure to sunlight. What are the signs of ageing? Some of the signs of healthy ageing skin include: * inning - Decrease in the production of basal layer cells results in thinning of epidermis and dermis.

* Stop smoking - e action of puckering up for each drag increases the chances of wrinkles around mouth. * Moisture regularly - Moisture your skin all year round. * Care for skin gently - Use soaps, body washes or shampoos that are 'neutral' and pH-balanced (neither too acidic nor too alkaline). Age related dryness exacerbates by skin irritants such as perfurmed soaps, heavily chlorinated swimming pools and long hot showers.

* Sagging and Wrinkles - Decrease in Elastin and Collagen leads to sagging & appearance of wrinkles.

* Diet - Consumer food that is rich in antioxidants and Vitamin A, C and E. Anti-oxidants help fight against the free radicals that age skin.

* Age Spots - Age spots are caused by pigment cells saturating in certain areas. is is more likely to happen in skin areas which are exposed to sun.

How to reverse ageing? * Topical lotions - Commercially available antiageing creams with retinoids can help.

* Facial peels - A therapy used to reduce or improve wrinkles, blemishes, pigment spots and sun-damaged areas of the skin. Using a chemical solution of alpha hydroxy fruit acid, the top skin layers are peeled away, allowing new, smoother skin with tighter cells to occupy the surface. * Botulinum toxin A - Used to cosmetically remove wrinkles and to treat some muscle conditions, such as spasms. * Fillers and Autologous Fat Transplant Hylauronic acid fillers (HA) like Restylane, Juvaderm or Sculptra that are FDA approved are used to provide volume to the sagging skin. Implants and fat gras can disguise facial expression lines. * Laser Resurfacing and Cosmetic Surgeries - Cosmetic Surgery is required to remove redundant sagging skin, such as blepharoplasty for baggy eyelids and a face li to tighten the jowls. WHAT IS DRACULA OR VAMPIRE FACE LIFT? Using your own blood for rejuvenating your face e patient's own blood is withdrawn is a special tube, which separates the patient's own platelets using a centrifuge within 15 minutes. is isolate is known as PRP

(platelet rich plasma) Using numbing cream and a very small needle (for almost no pain), the dermatologist injects the patient's own growth factors back into her face in a particular way. ese growth factors then activate multipotent stem cells already in the skin (tricking them into "thinking" there's been an injury and new younger tissue should generated) e multipotent stem cells then develop into new collagen, new blood vessels, and new fatty tissue trying to "repair" the skin that was never injured! e result...younger-appearing skin! e effects of the procedure improve for 2 to 3 months and last for at least 1 to 2 years! Amongst the long listed choices available for reversing ageing, consult your dermatologist for the best possible option suiting your pocket and your skin type!

Different types of Intra-ocular lenses Since about 15 years ophthalmic surgeons all over the world prefer phaco emusification with foldable intraocular lens (IOL) implantation for almost all types of cataracts. Among the foldable IOL’s however there are many choices that confuse patients. is is an attempt to explain the differences.

Hydrophilic / Hydrophobic: is refers to the material of the lenses and the main difference is that hydrophobic lenses cause less ‘posterior capsule opacification’ (PCO). PCO is opacification of the capsule of the natural lens on which the artificial IOl rests. If it happens you will have reduced vision again sometime aer the cataract surgery and we need to make a hole in the capsule with a Yag laser. Hydrophobic lenses avoid this problem. Ashperic: Aspheric lenses have a modified curvature of the lens which increase the sharpness of vision to some extent. It has this advantage only if all the other structures in your eye like your cornea, macula, etc. are normal. Ultraviolet Filter: Some lenses have an ultraviolet filter which prevents ultraviolet

two eyes aer the surgery and this can solve the problem to some extent.

Multifocal: ose who want to see at all distances without glasses can opt for multifocal lenses. Technology has improved a lot in recent years and there are many good multifocal IOL’s available. However this option also involves some compromises. Most of these lenses reduce contrast and the clarity of vision is slightly reduced at all distances. Some patients have glare for bright lights. Some patients need to wear glasses occasionally. However, when patients understand these limitations and opt for these lenses, they are very happy to be free of glasses most of the time. Dr. Jagruti Desai

light reaching your retina and are supposed to prevent macular degeneration. But they also reduce contrast in some cases and your doctor will advise if they are right for you. Toric: ese lenses have recently become available. Until now we were able to reduce only your spherical glasses number when we did your cataract surgery but now we can reduce the cylindrical number also and this greatly increases the clarity of vision. So they are recommended for all patients with cylindrical number along with a cataract.

Monofocal: Our eyes slowly lose the power to focus for different distances aer the age of 40 and that is why those who have never had glasses need plus number reading glasses aer the age of 40. ose who also have distance glasses need bifocal or progressive glasses. is condition is called presbyopia. With monofocal lenses, this condition will remain aer cataract surgery and you will have absolutely clear vision at one particular distance, either distance or near. We can choose the power of your IOL to adjust a different residual number in the

'The Big Door' is one-of-its-kind. Unique. Not only in India, but also throughout the wide world. It is very aptly named as well. As one walks in through the 27-feet high doors (reminiscent of a Maharajah's fortress), one is welcomed by an imposing larger-than-life statue of a lion. Mr Vivek Gupta, the knowledgeable and passionate owner (along with his charming wife Sunita) of this store, informs me that the lion is made of a single piece of imported onyx stone. Amazing. And this is just one of the many treasures to be found in 'The Big Door', which has something to suit every taste and every budget. The 27-feet high doors itself were made in Udaipur. The store also specialises in providing clients customised doors made from teak wood. In a very short time (it opened its big doors to the public on 21st October 2013), it has quickly become a popular destination for an unmatched collection of jewelery and interiors, many prized antiques, and the rest being excellent reproductions. Mr. Vivek Gupta, originally from Delhi, has made Mumbai his home for the past decade. Having a background in retail real-estate, he has effortlessly transferred his skills to retail offering of jewelery and interiors. The store is about fantastic Indian art and artifacts. Mr. Gupta's passion for the quaint and esoteric shows in the wide ranging articles on display. Each item looks very expensive and classy,

but he stresses the fact that the store caters to all price points, (starting from an unbelievably low Rs. 2,000 for some lovely jewelery items), as the idea is for a person with any budget to walk in, pick up something pretty which he or she admires, and take it home. As Mr Gupta eloquently puts it, "You can always buy branded furniture elsewhere, but what stops you from coming here, and picking up a silver mirror for your bedroom, something you can see on a daily basis and feel nice about." Most furniture stores stock Chinese or European furniture, but at 'The Big Door', the furniture is made of Burma teak, and has a covering of pure silver. The jewelery on display is also a healthy mix of traditional Indian designs. Mr. Gupta does not believe in advertising, and most of the clients land up through word-of-mouth. While there are some stores which have opened up to make a profit by selling anything, 'The Big Door' falls in a special category where they believe in and love what they sell. Well worth a visit, the store is conveniently located at the junction of Pali and Dr. Ambedkar Road in Khar (west), just a building away from the Barbecue Nation restaurant.

Mystery, Intellectual & Fun are the 3 words that epitomize the “never-heardbefore venture on Indian soil” baptized as Clue Hunt, finds out Tyrell Mendez

India’s first live escape game “CLUEHUNT” is the brainchild of established dentist Dr. Tina Chhatpar and real estate developer Mr. Ketan Chhatpar. It has only been forty days since its inception and Clue Hunt has created a gargantuan buzz as the next best fun zone in funky town. In Jonny’s language, Clue Hunt is a sixty-minute live escape challenge that you can play as a team of two to five folks. It’s not a mundane online game, as you will be physically locked inside the game room. Goal is to use those little grey cells of your brain commanding logic. Synergic teamwork is a must. Clue Hunt has got two game rooms christened, “Mr. Spylock’s Chamber” to give you the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle vibe and the second attraction is “Kaboom!”. The games cater to people aged from fifteen to fifty. Children can play only with adults included in the group as the game commands a bit of reasoning skills. The couple fondly says that “the lesser you know what’s in the room, the greater is the zeal quotient.” The clientele ranges from groups of families and friends as well as corporates looking forward to test their employees’ team spirit.

“It makes you feel like you’re physically locked in a video game console as Super Mario or Prince of Persia on a mission.” “Clue Hunt is the number one adventure to do in Mumbai on tripadvisor.com” echoes the couple in harmony as many foreigners have frequented their invention. They recall a French couple who finished the task in forty-seven minutes sporting their thick glasses. “Seventy percent of the gamers have completed this mission”, says the cofounder Dr. Tina Chhatpar who also runs a dental clinic (Dentissimo Dental) in the same building. The rate of success depends on the size and intellect of the group. There are CCTV cameras to help the game master monitor the happenings inside the maze. Use of Internet, phones and cameras is prohibited. The major myth is that Clue Hunt is an online game. It is not scary or physical, so players need not have Hulk Hoganlike biceps. There is something to interest individuals of all age groups. The owners are looking to expand and are open to franchising in the near future. Tyrell Mendez

Perry Road ALM Proactive Regarding Robbery

Easily on the higher end, if you took the top ten ALMs of Bandra, Khar, SantaCruz; Perry Road ALM has taken civic awareness to a new level. Just a few days back, we met Anil Joseph & David Fernandes, both active committee members getting a warning poster put up on the junction of Perry Road and D’Monte Park Road, opp. DPRC, near the bus stop. Just 2 months back, this area was witness to day-light robberies. Since this ALM and surrounding

areas have been badly affected by the spate of recent robberies, this move to create awareness among citizens is most welcome. In fact, others areas should follow this example, so that caution prevails – and people will not be caught unaware. Even potential robbers will take this into account. e Perry Road ALM has initiated many other civic projects in the recent past – and needs to be felicitated for doing a good job. Keep it up! Will The Circle Be Broken? Dear Reader, January is traditionally the time for new beginnings – resolutions we make, that can lead us towards a better life.Last year’s achievements should spur us to greater levels of success, as we can use our experience as stepping stones. As we let go of old shackles that held us back, we feel refreshed with new vigour, that the new year brings. In Bandra, this feeling is even more pronounced. With the shopping scenes coming to a crescendo, due to heavy festive discounts; Hill Road & Linking Road with their inner roads are centre stageto the hustle and bustle of Bandra. Everyone is trying hard to get what they yearn for at the best possible price. Discounts are everywhere. Bargaining is the name of the game – till the deal is done. Very soon, we will be witness to

the National Elections. This time, the third option – AamAadmi has provoked both BJP & Congress into being more pro-active. In Bandra, their supporters are swelling by the hour – creating ripples everywhere. Will election results this year, see waves of change? Is this the crux of eradicating or reducing corruption, leading to the nation’s betterment? Or is this old wine in new bottles? This time things have gone beyond the limit, so we need to think ‘out of the box’. The common man is celebrating our 64th Republic Day with a lot of patriotism – but, with no vision ahead. We need responsible people governing this country. Those at the helm of power cannot be people with self-interests. In and around Bandra, we need our elected representative at Parliament to truly reflect our needs & aspirations to the nation and our city. Will this ever happen? The critical question in everybody’s mind is: Will The Circle Be Broken?

Let’s resolve to study the current situation and be an informed voter. Meanwhile, your favourite local newspaper is evolving at a faster pace.Bandra – the most happening suburb, this side of the Suez; has an underbelly that has plenty of burning issues that surface as news, for all the wrong reasons. Remember, dear reader – we are with you! Do contact us to report about anything news worthy in your locality. Please e-mail me: editor@bandrabuzz.com. It’s all about awareness, to create a better Bandra. Have a wonderful 2014 – with health, wealth & happiness.

Warm Regards, Merck N. D’Silva Editor-In-Chief

Letters to the Editor Dog Pooh, Filth On Our Roads The foot paths of 14th, 15th 16th& 14th Roads, near St. Theresa Marg are frightful. These areas are the ugly spots in the ‘Beverly Hills’ of Mumbai. To name a few areas, that cause a lot of nuisance: GUTTER-WATER POINT is right in front of ‘Basilico’ on Pali Road, where many hotels & shops have sprouted recently. GARGLE POINT is at the 30th Road - Pali Road Junction, where a chai-stall, breakfast snacks, lunch etc. stalls are doing continuous business amidst filth. If you happen to be around the bus stand, expect a spray or stink from people gargling. But, who cares? COWS / BUFFALOES / DOGS STREET is situated in the areas around 14th, 15th 16th& 14th Roads, near St. Theresa Marg. You will find filth – dung & dog pooh spread on the streets. School kids cannot walk straight, as they need to avoid the mess. Garbage bags, awaiting the dumper trucks are torn open for cows to feed every morning. Dogs make a mess, even as the roads are swept. Decent people walk their dogs here, instead of taking them to doggie parks. Here, hygiene has taken a back seat – and authorities need to step in and fine these people that are responsible for cheating chaos & unhygienic conditions. This information is for the benefit of all Bandraites. It is not fiction. We senior citizens are living and moving ‘One-Step-At-A-Time’. Something’s gotta be done. Will our elected representatives take action – or just turn a blind eye? Karim Hussein

Appreciation Your local newspaper ‘Bandra Buzz’ gives us valuable information; one of them being: your article on ‘LAW of WILL’ by Mr. Cyrus M. Gonda- along with his contact number. There are many old and young people facing this problem, not only here in Bandra; but all over Mumbai and among friends and relatives living across borders. They are either not aware till late in life - and if they are, they are so confused about willing, that they keep limping on the matter of will till the end - and depart intestate, leaving family members disputing endlessly. Thank you for your informative content. John D’Souza AAP You can easily guess who fears this AamAadmi wave – and are getting sleepless nights. The game has changed, equations have changed, no more harassment to the poor and needy. Only the broom can clean up the mess. Leslie Almeida Bandra Reclamation Ruckus The filth on the footpaths from LalMatti, just outside The Ali Yavar Jung Institute for the Handicapped; right beyond the MTNL’s office - is an eyesore, that is increasing day by day to such an extent and with so much impunity, that it has even come down to occupy parts of the road itself. The whole footpaths on both sides of the road are completely taken over by the slum dwellers, veg.vendors,

shops, hotels, caterers, grocers, barbers, doctors, etc. Moreover, cooking and washing outside, charpoys with sick elderly people, permanent heaps of bamboos and tarpaulins, hand carts, autos, taxis, etc. - have taken over that place. They also crap, urinate, brush their teeth, vomit, bathe and wash there. All of them are illegal migrants. All this, happening in broad daylight. Wonder where are the corporators, M.L.A.s and the MP? At what cost this malaise? Vote banks? Normally it is ‘Seeing is believing’ but what we see happening around is ‘believing is seeing’. Very sad. Are our elected representatives blind? Your paper must highlight this matter relentlessly, till the authorities clear the road and footpaths there. One morning recently while returning by bus, I noticed a huge crowd on a foot path corner.Coming closer, I noticed BMC workers, police and bulldozers demolishing a two/three kachha huts. The bus could’nt move ahead for some time and the common refrain among the passengers, the bus driver and conductor in Hindi, Marathi and English was “Oh, this is only an eye wash. Tomorrow the same demolished huts will be replaced by pucca houses. They’ll spring overnight.” - and… how very true! Dealing with the BMC offices is agonising. Even passing by the BMC offices and looking at the crowds there is despairing. We need to do something urgently. Dinesh Malhotra

‘Gharavarti’ - an EI Film tracing the community’s origin It is a film about the lives and the living of a community that brought centre stage the amalgam of the influence of the Portuguese entry into India, with the impressionable success of the British; within the Salsette of the old Bombay and its neighbouring hamlets. It is a film that is meant to be the only historical document of the pride and passions of the Bombay East Indian Community. The film will portray the success of a people who withstood the enigmatic changes that took place within the 200 years of a community’s prime existence within the ambit of the power of the Catholic Church and the agrarian resources - that was their mainstay. ‘Gharavarti’ is the working title of the film. The story revolves around a thematic screenplay that makes you laugh and reminisce; as you embrace the nuances of a race often fraught with the uneasy tenor of not knowing who they belonged to - the British Crown, the Catholic Church or to the pedestal erected by Late Kaka Baptista. It will be a minimal budget film, but large enough to attract the likes of the ‘Nat Geo Channel’ and the ‘History Channel’ for viewership distribution. The people responsible for this brilliant thought of a film and the process shape it will take, are graciously sober to the idea of becoming recipients of donations and low interest investments from the community & those outside who value their affiliations with the Bombay East Indian Community. The support received for the film already is overwhelming & will become the foundation for this campaign to go forward as the

film navigates from scriptwriting to final take. An original score for the film is on the anvil. Many professionals in the industry (& surprisingly some of them East Indians) are ready to sound edit, sound mix & color grade. The film will be made to conform to the technical specifications of what NatGeo & History channel require. The film will also be submitted to many film festivals abroad after a world premiere, sometime in 2015. Contributing to this one & only of its kind film on the lives & experiences & everyday musings of a community so well know is your chance to help make this community film happen for the world to know that the Bombay East Indian exists - & always will. If there is a promise, it is that every rupee contributed will go a long way towards not only finishing the film, but making it a great film this side of the Suez. Those involved with the thought of producing the film are trying to get hold of an East Indian America-based film maker, who has many worldwide acclaimed films to his credit. Living in Los Angeles, this EI Director is much sought after for his one camera technique seen in ‘Who’s Good Looking’ (YouTube) & other productions across the Atlantic. Being an East Indian, makes him the ideal Director for this film. It is hoped that he has the time to deliver. Those who are interested to be part of this prestigious project can please visit www.bandrabuzz.com/gharavarti.html for more details. UncleKing
