DJ Uday - your all seasons ‘Music Man’ There are some DJs who play good music - and then there is DJ Uday who knows your mind & plays to get you addicted to his music. He played music for two functions at our wedding and the crowd's tired feet refused to stop dancing on tunes from Hollywood to Bollywood - till the music stopped early in the morning. Uday is a true genius in music, he is a DJ ‘with a soul’ !

Awesome music, fantastic - understanding of the pulse of the crowd, never a moment of lull. Always keeps hitting you with surprises… such has been the experience of listening to DJ Uday play in all his events that I have attended. A thorough entertainer who lets his music do the talking… Can't get enough of the music, from the console of DJ Uday. A rock star all the way… Deep Malhotra, Managing Partner Orijit Mitra, Manager Gemini New Media Ventures Vodafone India

Armed with his passion for music and impeccable mixing skills, DJ Uday rocks the dance floor by immersing himself into the songs that he plays. For him, DJing is much more than just mixing sounds and playing tracks. Before he steps on to the floor, he visualizes the dance floor and chooses songs, accordingly. Then, he understands and analyses each song, mixes the sounds, creates the track, and turns the dance

floor into a different world, entirely. His first ever act as a musician was during his college days. He was surprised and delighted when he discovered his DJing skills and crowd-pulling abilities. He was even more delighted, but not at all surprised when he went on to win the ‘War of DJs’ in his first ever participation itself. He, then, repeated the act four times in a row!

TWO CARS IN FLAMES On 31st Jan 2013 at about 2 am I woke up to a loud sound. When I looked out of my window, I saw two cars in flames. I later came to know that a stationary (parked)car was hit by a speeding car with such an impact, that both cars caught fire. I immediately alerted the Police control room and the fire department. The Police arrived in 10 minutes, and the Fire Brigade 25 minutes. The couple in the speeding car had a narrow escape just in front of ‘Sheltry’. It is to be noted that St Paul road has a very high traffic inflow from Hill Road. When the foot path from ‘Casa Almeida’ Bldg to ‘Dil Kush’ building was removed a few years back, it resulted in cars parking on BOTH sides of the road. Repeated requests to officials, to put ‘No Parking’ signs on one side of the road have fallen on deaf ears. While St Cyril’s, St Leo's, St Andrew’s and D’Monte Park Road have ‘No Parking’ signs on one side of the road; St Paul’s Road does not have No Parking signs on one side. Will the concerned ALM or our elected rep's wait till more accidents take place ???? Leslie Almeida

ANITA – THE FEARLESS All the citizens of Mumbai are sick to their gills, with the arrogance of some of our useless politicians. Anita Lobo a 'H'(W) Ward Federation member, has been a Voluntary Traffic Warden over many years, on duty, in various places in Bandra, Khar, etc. Last week whilst she was on duty, on 20th Road - one of Narayan Rane's son, was driving down and happened to park his car along the kerb side at the junction of 20th Road and C.D. Marg, Khar. With their usual disregard for everyone around, his security guards immediately stopped their vehicles alongside his car. Following them in another jeep was a Police jeep which also stopped. This caused a traffic jam on the road. So, Anita requested the security guards to move the vehicles to one side. They turned round, abused her and asked, who the hell she was to direct them. She replied, that she was on duty, hence this request. Immediately Nitesh or Nilesh, one of Mr. Narayan Rane's son came up asked, "Do you know who I am"? Unafraid, She replied "Yes I know you are a Minister's son". With great

CARROTS & STICKS vs PEOPLE’S POWER Dear Readers, With the cool weather creating the right romantic ambiance, February is the time for lovers to get closer. Bandra – the eternal social hub is the centre of hectic activities. Carnival events add to the gaiety – even as ‘King Momo’ has his moments of glory. For many expats, this is an amazing experience. These come to a crescendo till Pancake Tuesday… and then it’s Lent. A time lent to us to repent. Meanwhile, our governing groups seem to be

Bandra Buzz arrogance he said, "I'm the People's Party man - and who the hell do you think you are". He asked his Security Guards to call up 100. The Police arrived and instead of supporting her she who was on duty, as a Traffic Warden; took her to the Khar Police Station and took down her statement, which she was unable to read, as it was in Marathi - and detained her. She requested them to let her go as she was on duty - but her pleas were not heeded to. Her sister called me and told me about Anita being detained at Khar Police Station. I rang up Sr. P.I. Mr. Pote - who released her after 2.30 p.m. The incident took place at about 11.30 a.m. On an earlier occasion, a couple had parked their car on Union Park Road, just outside Sagar Bldg. As they were just driving off, one of Rane's son brushed the couple's vehicle. So this couple parked in the lane and walked up to meet him. When the gentleman inquired why they had deliberately brushed his car the Security Guards started beating him up. Frightened, he rushed back to his vehicle, but not before the Guards got him - and beat him till he fell on the ground, when they started kicking him. His wife pleaded with them not to beat him, but they threw blows at her as well. Sensing it was an influential person involved, the lady pulled her husband into the car and drove away. Local residents called the Khar Police, but by the time they arrived, the couple had vanished. Hospitals in Bandra, Khar and Santa Cruz were contacted, as also the Police Stations but there was no trace of them. This is nothing but ‘dadagiri’ by the Rane sons. There are many such incidents taking place on our roads in Bandra and Khar, but they get away with everything… not to mention the bullet that was fired at some one some time ago and no action taken. Will justice ever prevail???? Anandini Thakoor, Chairperson 'H' (W) Ward Federation

the Collector, as the Collector and the Police (for reasons best known to them) are unable to protect the land. There are not enough open spaces for children to play safely, and SAISA which provides so many activities, should receive the support of all of us. Let us all work together. Sandra R. Shroff I have always loved the vibes of SAISA - and PJ Club earlier. What caught my attention in the article was the fact that the lease has not been renewed. Why is the government not renewing the lease? It is this vague and amorphous situation that leads to misuse. In the meanwhile vested interests can make trouble. I hope clarity is brought to the situation. SAISA, keep up the good fight, if indeed right is on your side. Mrs. Thakoor is a dear friend - and has stated 'All is well'. I would like to go with that. Bindu I have never heard of an institute having a bar. I live in this area - and happened to pass by when a lot of high profile cars were parked late in the night. Imagine my surprise, when the watchman told me that a 'Cabaret Show' was going on at SAISA. With these concerned citizens revealing facts, backed by documented proof, I feel that the trustees have no right to continue in office. The government should take over - and use the premises for better use. Gurmeet Singh

SAISA is a wonderful facility, which has been created for the Pali Village and surrounding residents. It is a wonderful effort put in by selfless workers who work tirelessly for the good of the H West Ward. The lack of renewal of the lease has caused confusion, which may lead to the land being usurped by anti-social elements. This is constantly happening to land which belongs to

I attended the meeting at SAISA, in regard to the illegal demolition of the fence & tracked the story since. I have read the Concerned Citizens views, scrutinized their documents. Now, I feel guilty for believing all that was said at the meeting. For starters, very impressive & convincing presentation with details as recorded by the Trustees. From the explanations given, it appeared that the Trustees were victimized first by a group of disgruntled citizens & then by the Collector's office. Surprisingly, during the presentation however no documents were given, shown or mentioned by the Trustees. Some people asked for documents. There was a reluctance to give which seemed odd. Some colourful plan depicting the division of plots was displayed. Since the other side of the facts with documentary evidence, are on the net

working overtime, on how to divert our minds. They have turned up the heat – with unreasonable property tax increase, raising the crosses (and religious structures) issue once again (repeatedly asking for documents – in spite of it being given a few years back). There is also a brighter side. Many inner roads are being re-surfaced, sewage lines added in areas ‘forgotten’ in the past – and practical plans are afoot to decongest traffic in and around Bandra (soon to be implemented). Garbage collection has improved immensely. Our local elected representatives have done their bit to ensure more Adhaar Card Centres at

hub areas; to make it easier & faster for Bandraites to get their UID Card. The Bandra Police & BMC are co-operating and seem determined to keep Hill Road free from hawkers – but how long will it last? Bandra’s well-informed residents will not take this ‘carrots & sticks’ approach lying down. This is evident everywhere. Anger is seething at the surface. Now, very soon it will be action time. The coming months will see plenty of public protests, opposing the unreasonable civic decisions of our governing groups – that are at the helm of administrative affairs. Local activists will play an important role in issues

SAISA SIMMERING…

EDIT PAGE (www.bandrabuzz.com/saisa-documents.html) for all to see, I feel duty bound and responsible to comment having participated at the meeting, added to a show of hands for solidarity, believing at that moment, all that was told & ignorant of facts. The Trustees seem a disgruntled lot at the loss of the playground that was fetching them undisclosed income & for which as per RTI reply, no accounts were submitted. While a ‘pandora box’ may have been opened, the manner in which concerned citizens were named & described, was certainly not in good taste and unbecoming at a public meeting. The Trustees presentation of their facts, now appear distorted in comparison to what has been uploaded by the Concerned Citizens. The Concerned Citizens version is an expose of violations, which the Collector and Commissioner have taken serious note of. Their order to take back land for public use makes interesting revelations. Many, like me, must have considered retracting their support after reading the Concerned Citizens versions with documentary evidence. Citizens seemed to have spared no efforts to unearth these. Information from government offices is an ordeal & do require time and patience which are difficult today. Congrats to them who have done this. Surprisingly, while important documents are seen on the citizens version, no mention or reference was made at the meeting, on the Commissioner's rejection of stay application & no document provided for permissions to shut down the school. No mention was also made of the notice served by the Collector's office to remove illegal enclosure. One wonders why the Trustees kept these under wraps at the meeting. On a recall, there was no transparency - for people to understand the facts of the issue at the meeting. Conducting some sports activities on payment is tolerable, the way the Trustees have engineered this issue, is deplorable. The Trustees seem to mislead the public - and possibly believed that they can handle & sway the situation at the appropriate time. It’s time they allow the government to be the custodians of the place for public use. They should be above board, set an example of law abiding – and concern themselves in managing the club building and its activities. Rosey F. that affect the common man. If ‘thepowers-that-be’ don’t see the writing on the wall – and take corrective steps, they will witness people’s power once again. The impact will be seen in the 2014 election results. Let’s work with unity, towards a reasonable solution to avoid this standoff – for the common good.

Winners: Anjuman-E-Islam Girls School in “Mother of Gandhi” The Government’s project of 25% reservation for underprivileged children in private schools is yet to take off, but Navjeet’s Inter-School experiment had BMC and Private Schools competing on the same platform. So which school had the dramatic edge? The tri-lingual – Hindi, Marathi, English – contest had “Social Issues” as the theme. Each school, code-numbered for anonymity, was given 15 minutes to address any issue that plagues society. The young hosts of the event, Rajiv Jaisavar and Minal Kolaviya set the tone for each play. St. John the Evangelist High School, Andheri produced a hard-hitting play “And She Died” which focussed on the taboo subject of familial abuse. The Chapel Road Municipal School had little ones highlight the ruinous “Addiction”. Prabhat Colony Municipal School zoomed into “Child Rights”. Bazar Road Marathi School’s play on “Female Foeticide” skilfully brought out the gender bias in society. Jeevan Utkarsh (popularly known as

the Andrean Social Service Centre) displayed great acting skills in “EveTeasing”, Anjuman-E-Islam Girls School showed that Gandhiji is still relevant in “Mother of Gandhi”. Gloria Convent, Byculla used humour and histrionics to show how the bully of “Corruption” can be kicked out. St. Stanislaus High School enacted an allegorical play on how “Addiction” should be tackled when it is a dwarf instead of waiting to be overpowered by the giant. Finally, Navjeet’s rural Dhaigaon School staged a play on what they want most – “The Right to Education”. In a keenly fought competition with great concepts, scripts and acting, the Judges – Shripat Tite, Santosh Chaurasiya, Sanjay Kadam – all from theatre, said it came down to the wire. To Eat or Not To Eat

CHICKEN FARCHA, SNACK SHACK

BIRYANI, JEFF CATERERS There is a reason why people in Bandra are so content and I think it has to do with food! This 'Queen of the Suburbs' definitely knows that the route to win our hearts are through our tummies. We're spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding what to eat and where to eat it at. If it’s local cuisine you're interested in - you can choose from Moghlai, Punjabi, South Indian, Manglorean, Goan, Parsi, Indian-Chinese (I've made up this category as we can proudly say that this is our very own cuisine and really has nothing to do with China), Hyderabadi food, the list goes on... And that’s just the different types of Indian food available in Bandra. If you fancy some global cuisine you can choose from Japanese, Thai, Oriental, Italian, Arabic, Mexican, Spanish, and French cuisine. If you are in the mood to indulge, then you just must try some ‘Muslim dishes’ but be warned they'll be sure to pile on the kilos. My most favourite Biryani is still from Lucky's - but you can't go wrong if you'd like to try it at Jeff Caterers or Tavaa. A healthier and equally mouth watering option would be to go for something from the tandoor. If it’s Parsi food you want then head straight to RTI for some Berry Pulav or Dhansak or you can enjoy a quick Chicken Farcha at Snack Shack. Goan prawn curry or Malvani fish

MAHIMA STORES, HILL ROAD

SWEET BENGAL curry - if you're missing the coastal delicacies stop by Soul Fry for a delicious Fish Thali or Jai Hind for some Prawn Gassi or even Saayba for a seafood meal followed by a refreshing drink of Sol Kadi. Soul Fry or Cafe Goa also serves up some other great Goan dishes like Chicken Cafreal and Prawn Xacuti that I'd suggest you eat with pav instead of rice. If its desert you're interested in you'd be sure to find Indian sweets from all over India; available in our little Bandra. The best of Bengal's sweetmeats can be found at Sweet Bengal, North Indian sweets at Punjab Sweet house and Manglorean short eats at Mahima Stores. The biggest choice of international fare can be found at Global Fusion where you can sample a little bit of every cuisine, Kofuku or Aoi - Bandra's newest additions are bringing the tastes of Japan to our plates. Indigo Deli for the best pizza's this side of town, dip into a 4 cheese fondue at ‘Out of the Blue’ or slice into a delicious steak at ‘Corniche’ that sits across the ocean. If you fancy some middle eastern fare try the Lamb Kebab roll at ‘Sufra’ on Carter Road or their delicious Baklava which is a speciality desert that will guarantee to melt in your mouth. For delicious Mexican food and not the tex - mex fare drop in to ‘Sancho's’ which is a few baby steps outside Bandra. You can sink your teeth into a juicy Burrito and enjoy a plate of nachos, dipped in guacamole and drizzled in sour cream. So the next time you complain that the streets have gotten more crowded, and the traffic is ‘bumper to bumper’, remember that the sweet aroma of some speciality is waiting for you ‘just around the corner’. If you are like most ladies out there, sometime in your life you may have had a Valentines Day that was memorable, but for the wrong reasons. I remember, my best friend and me were doing some male battering over coffee the day before Valentine’s. Both of us, whining about our boyfriends - who had not made any plans yet for D Day. But then, of course, on 14th Feb we woke up - with fresh hope in our hearts. My door bell promptly rang at 11 am that day and a pretty bouquet lay there with red carnations and a huge teddy with a musical heart. He had remembered! I opened my closet , what was I going to wear? Not that he had asked me yet, but I had passed a hint the previous week that some restaurants in Bandra were having a Valentine theme - and both of us being Bandraites, we would find a common date place(they even had the corny heart shaped deserts). He had not wished me personally yet, but it was only 4pm. By 6 pm my patience wore out - and I called him, ''So, where we going?'' ''Are we going somewhere?' he asked. Confused as hell - but not wanting to lose the spirit of things, I added ''you such a pretender, sending me gifts and all - and now ....'' Pause, long pause ''Oh crap I forgot today is Valentines. Oh happy Val dearest. Have a conference call at 10, can we do it tomorrow? Anyway it's only a hallmark day.'' Absolutely fuming with the mixed signals, I banged the phone down and called up my best friend. But before I said anything she asked, ''So you liked all your surprises?'' Yes of course... That's what best friends are for, to cheer you up and make up for those who are not around. But all that didn't seem reasonable to me then, and I yelled at the poor girl for caring! (of course we made up later) As for the guy, let's say it was the last time he ever forgot Valentines day or any day for that matter. It made me think, who was St Valentine and what was his story? ''Lore has it that in 269 AD, 'Valentine' a Roman priest and doctor was persecuted by the emperor Claudius II for marrying Christian couples. Claudius sentenced him to an ugly death...a three part execution where he was beaten, stoned, and finally beheaded for performing marriage ceremonies of couples against the Emperors wishes. Some accounts state that this priest had fallen in love with the blind daughter of his jailer, and signed a letter that he wrote to her. “From your Valentine” were his last words - and she was cured of her blindness - so she could then read his letter.'' No he wasn't a saint of flowers, chocolates and diamonds nor did he wine and dine his lady or promise her the world. He was a simple man who was on his way to excecution - and left his heart for his beloved before his final breath. True or not, such a romantic Valentine story - nevertheless! Kainaz

Mama, did you know… I wasn’t sure how I’d react When they brought you home. The word ‘beautiful’ escaped my lips over and over As looked upon your face, I was at peace. People came from miles around; a stoic priest faltered We marched, and you, who detested ‘Hell Road’ caused a traffic snarl. Yet not one did honk as they edged around you in silent reverence As you lay in silk, looking your best. You rode under Republic Day streamers like royalty and over a red carpet To Jesus who welcomed you with open arms, ‘Come’. We were early - a tribute to your punctuality; Mass was blissful; the hymns handpicked, a joyous harmony of guitar and voices. The congregation had gathered within and without the church; They listened enraptured and some broke when we thanked God for you, The wind beneath our wings. The respects were never-ending and I feared the sun would set before we lay you to rest. Now you sleep under a mountain of flowers; Red and pink and yellow and orange and white piled two feet high; Surrounded by people you touched and who will go forth to touch. This passing brings omni-presence; time and space loose meaning; As you look down and smile And guide and protect us, my mother. Douglas Misquita, Jr.

Marie Antoinette - A bit of France in Sherly Rajan

The French patisserie opened by Severine and Mark, a young enthusiastic duo from France, stands opposite Rizvi college. The gold embellishment of the huge welcome sign that says’ “Marie Antoinette'' cannot be missed. Inspired by the theme of coffee and cakes, the speciality here are the macarons which are hand prepared by Severine, who fell in love with Mumbai and wanted to open something right in the heart of the city. Targeting mainly the European community in Mumbai - who miss out eating authentic French pastries, they also want their Indian clientele to experience what French baking is all about. The Macarons are priced at Rs 40/a piece - and though small like they

normally are in France, they taste delicious, with chocolate, caramel, strawberry, lemon and coffee being some of the introductory flavours. The outer meringue is crisp and delicious - and so are the inner fillings in each of them we sample and that makes us want to savour the banana slice and apple pie in front of us too. The cake slices which are called 'financiers' are priced at Rs 30/- for plain and Rs. 50/- for strawberry. They taste best with your coffee, which can be made the way you like it. They also make quiches at Rs 120/- and Panini’s at Rs 170/-, tomato, onion, basil, mozzarella, mushroom being the main ingredients in both of them. Everything they serve is baked

fresh, right upstairs in the kitchen on the mezzanine floor of the cafe. The couple who are only 24 years of age have surprised us with their courage to start something this big on their own in a foreign land. They inform us that they are doing this for an experience of life before they go back to France. ‘’Everyone has been so helpful and encouraging and we have met only good people until now in Mumbai.'' The best part about the cafe is the decor, wrought iron chairs, expensive chandeliers, antique mirrors and the white finishing’s give you an airy and posh feel. The name ‘Marie Antoinette’ comes of course, from the French queen who loved her coffees, macarons

and beautiful dresses; the latter of which Severine plans to design on the mezzanine floor of the cafe - and display them to clients in the near future. Though making everything from scratch everyday is hard work, they don't want to compromise on quality and so using the best ingredients and keeping the ‘French touch’ to it, is a priority for them. The stylish cafe does look promising once Bandraites catch up on it ...... 9819435957, 9819435942 1B, White Rose bldg, Sherly Rajan rd, Bandra (w), Mumbai 050 Kainaz Jussawalla Pic Courtesy: Nelvin John Patil

LOCAL NEWS

Decongesting Bandra’s Tra∞c Trauma Hill road has 3 major ‘bottlenecks’ that hinder the smooth flow of traffic. They are: 1. Front of Kohinoor Cycle Shop – this spot witnesses countless accidents, due to the narrow stretch on an important arterial road. 2. Front of Godrej Nature’s Basket (now shifting ahead) – this narrow stretch creates difficult situations. 3. Front of Patel Stores – at this spot, car-owners/travelers alight to shop, blocking vehicle movement. The concerned authorities should look into these spots that are creating daily problems for the general public – by fast-forwarding cases that have been kept on the backburner for many decades. Do we need a major accident to wake us up? Although we in Bandra, are proud to reside in the ‘Queen of the Suburbs’, just getting around our immediate neighbourhood is a nightmare, especially at peak traffic hours – i.e. mornings and evenings. Weekends are even worst.Hold your breath – something practical is on the anvil.

PRESENT SITUATION Most traffic ‘in & out’ of Bandra come & go from 5 points. These are: From the NORTH & WEST – Danda/Carter Road & S.V. Road/Linking Road. The SOUTH Entry & Exit points are: Mahim-S.V. Road & the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The EAST has the Western Express Highway. Being a ‘happening hub’, Bandra’s traffic gets congested easily. Any local event or traveling VIP, adds to the misery. Most of these wide roads lead to

the narrow lanes & bye-lanes of Bandra. So a motorist from ‘outside’ who needs to ‘cross Bandra’(or visit someone in Bandra) is just adding to the local traffic – and gets stuck ‘bumper to bumper’ at peak hours. This impacts locals traveling within Bandra. Even pedestrians get affected. What innovative ideas can we use to resolve this major issue?

WHAT WE CAN DO

should take into account local sensibilities – and see that their views are taken into consideration. Here are some suggested solutions to help resolve this issue:

SOLUTION # 1 If a ‘link road’ is created between Bandstand (opp. Virendra) & Jogger’s Park – behind St. Andrew’s Church, near the Chimbai Beach; it will act as a by-pass - and help decongest Hill Road, St. Andrew’s Road, St. Paul’s Road & Perry Road to a great extent. Residents around Carter Promenade / Pali Hill / Rizvi Complex - would benefit a lot.

Well, there are several suggestions that can BY PASS the local traffic that uses these narrow roads, just by creating SHORT CUTS at critical points. Studying the demographics of Bandra, and understanding the fact that this is not SOLUTION # 2 If a ‘link road’ is a planned suburb (it has evolved grad- created between the ‘Bandra End’ of ually through centuries), a little the Bandra-Worli Sea Link & Bandtweaking can work wonders. Plans stand Promenade near Taj Hotel; it will

How long will Hill Road be Hawker-Free? The welcome view of a ‘seeming wider’ Hill Road has given Bandraites some faith and hope in the Police and BMC. Many oldies are reminiscing about the “Golden Days of Bandra”. Traffic snarls are much rarer now. Shops have seen soaring sales. Yes, at last… the authorities have reacted positively to public pressure. We asked locals around Hill Road. Jayesh told us, “It is like a breath of fresh air, to move more freely around Hill Road. Now, our neighbourhood seems much more quieter and more like a normal home” However, when we met Farah, who had come to Bandra from Kalina for an outfit to match her new pair of shoes, she had just bought from Linking Road; she said, “The whole ‘happening scene’ has disappeared.” She quickly added, “The charm of Bandra is in the shopping and food outlets – now, we will just go elsewhere.” All in all, the co-operation of the cops & the BMC has kept away illegal hawkers – but the million dollar question is: How long will Hill Road be hawker-free? Kathy Munim Pic Courtesy: Olav Rodrigues

act as a by-pass – and help decongest the entire stretch of the roads at the reclamation and near Lilavati Hospital & Mehboob Studio. Residents around Bandstand Promenade / Mount Mary Hill - would benefit a lot.In fact, a ‘short by-pass road’ from the Reclamation Road near Bandra Bus Depot (Reclamation) to St. John the Baptist Road(a location shift of land areas can exchanged with societies concerned and BEST, for the common good) will surely be a blessing to Kadeshwari Marg residents. Residents around Supari Talao would benefit a lot.

SOLUTION # 3 If a ‘link road’ (or rather – a fly over the railway tracks)is created between the S.V. Road Traffic Junction near Gaiety Galaxy Gemini and the Western Express Highway, with an offshoot to the Bandra Terminus; the entire Linking Road and S.V. Road stretch adjoining Bandra Lake, Bandra Masjid will surely have reduced traffic pressure. These link roads should be wide enough for two way traffic – with an ‘exclusively pedestrian’ parallel road. This would also help in the free flow of traffic in many narrow bye-lanes, easing tense moments for locals – and avoiding accidents due to impatient drivers. If you have something to say. Be an active part of the change. Your feedback is vital. We need your views. If you have any constructive ideas (practical) on this traffic, that’s a daily issue, please send us your suggestions on news.bandrabuzz@gmail.com. Property tax hike and its implications

In view of the variation in the current assessment tax bills, MLC Adv. Ashish Shelar organized 2 public meetings in Bandra, Khar-Santacruz which were attended by over 800 residents. A BMC

official Mr. Pralhad Kalkoti- Superintendent (New Tax Cell) was present to answer all queries. He explained in detail the modified tax calculation to be now based on capital value of the prop-

erty. Residents were provided guidance as to filing their objections in case of any discrepancy in their bills. Residents wanted clarification over issues like: Would age of the building mean from the time of commencement, the time of completion or when the Occupation Certificate given? People also enquired if BMC would be levying taxes on unauthorized structures? Senior citizens demanded concession in the taxes as they had no income source any more. Adv Ashish Shelar has already written to the Mun. Commissioner Sitaram Kunte asking for time- extension in payment schedule and also installment wise payment facility - to ease the burden on the public, as there was a retrospective demand for the same. The Civic and Political Cell of St. Vincent de Paul Church, Khar West Mumbai along with The Watchdog team, organized a Seminar on the recent Property Tax Hike.

Advocate Godfrey Pimenta and his team, addressed a seminar on the subject of Property Tax based on Capital Value system and how to deal with it. There were around 150 people who attended this informative session. The legal basis of challenge, the faulty base value, the glaring and deliberate mistakes committed by BMC etc were highlighted - for Gaothans, Housing Societies and all other categories affected by the property tax. Citizens were shown how to effectively deal with the said increase in property tax. There was a presentation to illustrate the same - and an explanation of the item wise billing, for people to understand and query. The seminar was enlightening - and the reason and manner to complain was explained and discussed. People left better informed – and wiser than before. Cosmo Colony’s Little Carnival val is huge in Goa - and was introduced here by the Portuguese. He plans to make this bigger here in Bandra - on a grander scale and also bring out its meaning and spread the Goan culture. “Carnival” is derived from the latin word “to throw away meat” and the main Purpose of the Carnival is to have a Final Celebration before the 40 days of Lent. In the days before Lent, all rich food and drink has to be disposed off. The consumption of this, in a giant party that involved the whole community, is thought to be the origin of the Carnival. Getting the youth involved is his main priority. He has plans for events and activities like this all over Bandra. The preparation for this Carnival begins a month before. The locals from the village voluntarily chip in to prepare snacks and food, which is served throughout the day. Water tankers, sprinklers and water balloons are also

set up, which adds to the joyous occasion. Palm leaves are used as the main decoration for the Carnival. To add to this gala celebration, people also dress up in costumes adding to the Fun and excitement of the event. This one day carnival begins at 9 am with a small prayer followed by Music, Dancing, Singing, Feasting and Merrymaking - where people of different age groups take to the dance floor and this goes on till about 8:30pm. Every year about 450 to 500 people come to participate from all over Mumbai. This celebration is open to all. So if you’re looking for a Spectacular Celebration and a rain dance party like never before, then this Carnival promises to be bigger and better next year. So see you there...near Mount Mary Steps

Thus, the process of getting a UID Card would be easier and faster – with the load divided. All present were satisfied, that this assurance from the authorities – of cooperation towards having more UID Card Centres, would speed up matters. Ajay Jain

What’s quite interesting - and what many Bandra residents do not know is that every year for the past 7 years, a small village in Bandra known as ‘Cosmo Colony’ near Mount Mary Steps organizes a festive carnival just before lent - on grand scale.

The Bandra Gymkhana Open Rink Football Tournament will be held on the D.P.R.C. grounds from 16th to 24th Feb' 2013. The tournament this year has received a record entry of 64 teams in the Open Men section from various clubs in Mumbai, which will be played on a Knock-Out basis. In the Veterans section there are 16 Teams and the Women section 8 teams who have confirmed their participation. This will be played on a league cum Knock-out basis.
