Christmas in Bandra

There’s nothing like Christmas in Bandra after Bandra feast. Bandra looked pretty. In our times, all the cute little cottages had Christmas stars and lights and red poinsettias on the window sill. New lace curtains, new lace frilly dresses, and come December, it was time to start making kuswar. The Bandra aunties started taking orders for marzipan and milkcream while little kids helped in rolling out kulkuls. We used to make nevris , rose cookies, coconut toffee, fudge, and lots of Christmas Cake. There was pure joy in putting up a Christmas tree, dotting it up with cotton as snow with Christmas carols blarring in the background. Making the crib and getting it together was a sacred affair. Crushing brown paper to make the stable and putting in straw and the little figurines would take hours and one felt happy for

a good job done. Cards were hung and holly and tinsel decorated the doors. Music stereo systems competed as one heard a different carol while walking down any street in Bandra. Jim Reeves’ Silent Night and Elvis ‘s Blue Christmas along with Bashir Sheikh’s Christmas Polka were favorites till Boney M came out with Mary’s Boy Child. Hill Road was dressed with silver tinsel and the shops were decked up in celebration. In those days, we spent hours buying cards at Cheap Jack and Hill Corner. Writing cards was a great chore while Bandra Post Office did an excellent job. I still remember the mothers getting worried if the cards were not written by early December. The postmen had lots of work delivering parcels from overseas and cards galore. There were no couriers in those days. Carol Singers from the many parishes in Ban-

dra went house to house singing with Santa in tow, while children joined in the singing. Every building had a children’s Christmas party and in school we shared simple gifts. The nativity scene was enacted every year, renewing our faith and Mary’s role in the play was the most coveted. Hilton store and Bandra Gym had children’s parties and the altar boys in church had their parties too. There were no altar girls at that time, and I remember us arguing in school with the nuns as to why girls were not allowed to become altar girls. Sunday school kids had Christmas party too. Damian Furniture store dressed its windows and we would all go to see it. But the best part was getting a new dress. I remember it was a craze to wear a suit for young girls like formals which I found terribly boring. I preferred the frills and gathers and was happy with a length that was mid way between a mini and a midi. Continued on Page 11 >> Convent Road Residents

Thank God for Colonisation like Virendra EDWIN FERNANDES COMMUNITY REPORTER Anyone who has been to Bandstand (is there anyone who hasn’t?), would have definitely noticed the 2 sprawling sprucely maintained buildings, strategically placed on the junction of Hill Road & BJ Road. Virendra Colony has always draws admiring glances. New comers to Bandra keep asking if Virendra is recently built. What a compliment to this Grand Old Lady on the threshold of her 60th celebrations come January 2019. Virendra Colony has history, pedigree, mystery and miracles aplenty. What is the origin of Virendra Colony? How did a pucce Catholic Housing Society in Bandra in the leeward side of St. Andrew’s Church, come to have a Hindu name? Why has Virendra Colony not gone in for redevelopment as yet? Have most residents migrated? Do the residents fight among themselves? What is the going price of flats at Virendra? Before attempting an answer to these myriad questions, let’s first trace the origin of this fascinating Colony. There was

a time in the 1950s when there existed a world without internet, mobiles, TV, iPads, Notebooks and Social Media. So for Catholics especially, the Church was the hub of all activities. Various motley groups would meet in the evenings and walk on the spacious grounds of the Churches. One such group consisted of Ned Seldon, Aloysious Albuquerque, Dennis Colaco, Louis Monteiro

and others. These were not the usual “time pass” sort of men but men with vision. They had been eyeing a large plot adjoining a stately Parsee bungalow belonging to Mr. Davar. (Waheeda Rehman the yesteryears Diva now lives in this bungalow). Mr. Davar a prim and proper gentleman who was partial to the Christian Community, readily agreed to sell the plot to St. Andrew’s Church then

under the Vicarship of the Rt. Rev. Mon. Henry Remedious. The deal was quickly done, an architect Charles Mascarenhas of Bandra was appointed and hey presto the St. Andrew’s Cooperative Housing Society took root. The colony consists of 2 buildings of 3 and 4 blocks respectively i.e. ground floor plus 2 floors. Continued on Page 4 >>

Thank God for Colonisation like Virendra Continued from Page 3 Each block has 6 flats, so 42 flats in all. All flats are of 2 bedrooms with a bathroom-cum-toilet and a stand alone toilet. A luxury in 1958 when most houses had toilets outside. Each flat is also built with a backdoor to facilitate hawkers and the ubiquitous maurawalis from Chimbai with their plaintive bai, maura pahhejey? A backdoor is something modern flats do not have. Till the 1970’s when a Galaxy of a building sprung up next door, would you believe, Virendra was the tallest Building on BJ Road! Some years down the line, The St. Andrew’s CHS took on another avatar. In keeping with changing times, the name was changed to the tongue twisting Virendra Sahakari Griha Nirman Samiti Ltd. Virendra incidentally is the Sanskritised version of Andrew! What is unique about Virendra, is the unique spirit of unity among its residents. Whole generations grew up together. They danced, sang, fought, picnicked, organised their legendary Annual Christmas Tree parties (each Block takes turns organising it), & what have you. The family that prays together stays together. So the Virendra family prayed around the Colony Cross, played together on her spacious grounds & badminton court. On this court, chasing the bird & courting took on new meanings. 4 couples have found their soul mates from within the Colony and many more are in the pipeline, I hear! That’s why even today residents can walk into each

other’s houses and feel most at home. They don’t need Vodafone to stay connected. One Christmas evening, a confirmed resident bachelor already quite full of the Christmas spirit, knocked on our back door. When my Dad opened the door, the Bachelor Boy shook my Dad’s hand with a slurry Merry Christmas Sir, I’ll have a whiskey and walked passed my startled Dad to the hall! I told you Virendraites are one big family. They share each other’s joys and sorrows. Nothing is a secret from anyone. Contrast this with the present, where most resident in other buildings do not even know their next door neighbours. Virendra was also a bedrock of talent. Over the years generations who cut their milk teeth in Virendra a real mixed bag, have left a distinct mark in their respective fields be it the Religious, Banking, IT, Airlines, Shipping, Management, Teaching, Fine Arts, Deep Sea Diving, Sports, Education, Literature, Medicine, Social Work, Chartered Accountancy, Drama, Event Management… take your pick, you’ll find a Virendraite out there amongst the best. Would you believe Virendra can even boast of a Missionaries of Charity nun? I was none the wiser although she & I graduated together. Today many Virendraites have migrated to foreign shores. I will not say greener pastures, as you won’t find any pasture greener than what you find in Virendra, especially during the monsoons. Many flats are locked but not for sale! Virendra has a vibrant online site & the Virendra diaspora have never forgotten their

roots. They still conduct picnics in places like Toronto & Melbourne. Like homing pigeons they return faithfully every Christmas to let their gelled hair down & relive the magic of their past. One former resident who flew in from Canada one early Christmas morn, paid off the taxi at the gate itself, stood there with his suitcase & to greet those returning from morning mass. He hugged & kissed everyone including the startled sweeper woman reporting to work! Another unique aspect of Virendra is the harmony and endearing trust the residents have in each other. For instance, to maintain uniformity, there is an unwritten writ that the balconies should not be enclosed or barred. In any other Society the balconies would have been enclosed to create an additional room. In Virendra no one has transgressed this writ. Remarkable. Also remarkable is Virendra’s proclivity to nurture longevity. There’s something in its air. Residents miraculously live to a ripe old age and beyond. Perhaps the miraculous medal of Our Lady embedded in the foundation of each block works miracles even today. At present: Mrs. Kate Lobo is 101; Mrs Remy Fernandes is 95; Joaquim D’Sa, Rose D’Sa, Zenia Athaide are in their 90s; Mr. Francis Braganza, Mr. Alva, Mrs Vilma Ribeiro are all in their late 80s….and believe me, these sprightly ladies and gents are independent and have an admirable zest for life. Touch wood. In short they are living embodiments of the Virendra spirit: We Render. I consider myself more than fortu-

nate to have lived my growing years in this halcyon home. What a full life we led. We had a variety of trees to feast on. Mango trees, bimbli trees, badam trees, mulberry trees even a tamarind tree which now stands outside the wall on the Hill Road side when the BMC took away part of our estate for road extension. The trees provided us nourishment and we climbed them like monkeys. We held fierce sports contests with our neighbours. Gul-nar, Lourdes Colony, Damian’s, Silverine (the old one), Rajaramwadi etc. We celebrated all the festivals with gusto. Not just Christmas. The noisier and messier the festival, the more the appeal!!! You bet Diwali with its attendant firecrackers and Holi with its colour, were topping the list. Our bonding is terrific. After all these years, the bonds have only grown stronger. May Virendra never go in for re-development. That would spell an end to a timeless way of life that has stood the test of time for over 60 long years.

Natural Ways to Prevent Smog Related Health Issues

LUKE COUTINHO COMMUNITY REPORTER Come winter, come smog. Smog is nothing but smoke + fog, a type of outdoor air pollution that can cause particular problems for people with existing health problems, including chest, lung or heart complaints. The following changes can help in strengthening the lungs: ELIMINATE CERTAIN FOODS Most lung disorders and infections, ranging from asthma, sinus to serious pulmonary disorders are caused due to the amount of mucus that builds up in our lungs. It is actually our body’s natural defence mechanism to trap certain bacteria and pathogens. If one is prone to snot formation, it’s recommended to avoid foods that trigger its secretion like milk, gluten, refined salt, sugar, oils, corn. Cucumber and yoghurt, at night, may not suit some and should be avoided. BRING IN SOME FOODS Nature has given us some foods that can work as natural decongestants and expectorants like bromelain (pineapple extract), cayenne pepper, oregano, cardamom, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, castor oil, garlic, onion, ginger, black pepper, raw honey. Even ajwain (Bishop’s weed) works well in expelling mucus, which is why ajwain potli, which is an age-old remedy, works as well as a nebuliser.

PRACTICE YOGIC BREATHING A lot of us don’t breathe to our full capacity. We breathe short and shallow which not only creates a shortage of oxygen in our body, but also fails to effectively eliminate toxins from our body. The pranayamic style of breathing, which teaches us ways to control our inhale and exhale is one of the most sought-after ways to improve lung health. Yogic techniques like Anulom vilom, Bhastrika, Kapalbhati really help. In yoga, these are also called shuddhi kriyas, because they help in cleansing and detoxification. For maximum benefits, one should note that the exhale must be longer than the inhale, preferably in the ratio of 1:2 (inhale: exhale). PURIFY YOUR HOME Add some natural air purifiers into your living space like plants, blocks of activated charcoal, pink Himalayan salt lamp and cut down the overall usage of chemically loaded household products and refrain from smoking (both active and passive) and take regular steam inhalations with turmeric powder and a few drops of eucalyptus/pine oil and invest in an air humidifier and exercising regularly helps build lungs that are strong enough to combat winter smog. In air filters, the activated charcoal absorbs many types of allergens and pollutants, leaving the air fresh and clean. For those suffering from breathing problems, activated charcoal air filters could be the best investment.

The Gang Wars of Old Bandra CHARACTERS Martina Coelho (name changed) a resident of Ranwar village recalls that whenever a raid was about to be carried out in the vicinity, the “boys” used to get the “kaevee” or signal from their contacts. For e.g., if the police were on their way to Bandra from their raid in Mahim, word was quickly spread to the boys in Bandra, who until then had hidden all their distilled liquor in the drains (“At least 12 Dalda tins used to fit in a single drain”, she emphasized). “We were children then & all this lent a great thrill to our daily lives,” she recalled today. “Some of the gangsters are still alive today & they don’t like to be reminded of the ‘good ole days”, she continues with a hint of fear in her voice. To escape conviction, the gang leaders would quickly pour out all the “wash” on to the streets and gutters. The Bandra pigs who were perennially in the gutters used to drink this and one got to see this queer sight of some very drunken pigs dancing and snorting in the afternoon sun.

His two children (boy & a girl), runs a flower business & do thermocol centre pieces & the like for weddings, First Holy Communions, Conformations, & supply a string of shops on Hill Road. Other ring leaders have today started cycle and motor cycle repairing shops. They are now, in the evening of their lives, going ‘straight’ engaging themselves in sports activities, happily married with grandchildren. Beyond Ranwar, was the Kathiyawari gang - and was also one of the most feared. Since these were ‘prohibition days’, most of these ‘gangs’ distilled liquor as a means of living and kept the law on their toes. The ‘Lunik Gang’ from Chapel Road in Bandra was the most famous of all the gangs. The grapevine says that it took a Jesuit priest to make all these boys turn over a new leaf - and give up the ways of the hockey sticks and the ‘soda water bottles.’ Many fights resembled the biblical ‘David & Goliath’ characters – with David being the hero, and Goliath, a ‘paper tiger’.

Charlie Ferns (name changed) lived in the same small tenement on Waroda Road. He died last year at the ripe old age of 70 plus. He refuses to admit that he headed a gang called “Flying Arrows”, saying that there was no gang as such, and that “we were just a bunch of toughs” & that whenever trouble broke out in the Bandra Fair, they’d go to ‘help out the boys.’ Alcohol made them more boisterous, but the neighbours weren’t complaining. The neighbours knew better. ‘Almost all these “gangs” plied the illicit liquor trade’ says Alfred D’Cruz who spent 30 years of his life in the bylanes of Waroda Road. Charlie has had his days of blood and gore! Neighbours were terrified of his daredevilry. But strangely he was protective of them. At his funeral, his neighbours, friends, casual acquaintances remembered him as a person who always helped his neighbour, the weak and the downtrodden and never ‘charged protection money’. “Perhaps that’s why God allowed him to live for so long” said a neighbour.

Well known resident Frankie Morgan (real name), now 56 years old; fondly remembers the good old days. He lives with his mother in a quaint little cottage at the junction of Langrana lane & Waroda Road & his wise wizened face crinkles with a smile as he recalls those years. “There were lots of scraps all along this road. Day and night these guys used to chase each other with hockey sticks and throw soda water bottles. Many were severely injured, but I don’t recall anyone dying as a result of these fights. We, as residents, never lived in fear. These fellows never troubled us and in fact these roads in those days were very safe even for women to walk at night and us school children too. I have been staying here for 50 years - and today nobody wants any ‘lafda’,” he smiles. There were many more interesting characters, that added to the magic in those days, when Bandra was like the ‘Wild West’ – in a way.

Super Seamstress Pamela passes away Pam specialized in creating bridal gowns that made brides look more beautiful KEITH LOBO COMMUNITY REPORTER Legacy is all about a person’s attempt to leave some sort of impact on the world, that survives beyond their death – being remembered for what you want to be remembered. Pamela Juliana Newnes nee Rebello – Pam or Pamela, as she was known; is no more. She has gone to a better place. But, she will always be remembered as the very talented, petite, soft spoken East Indian seamstress from Bandra (W). HUMBLE BEGINNINGS: Born in Poinsur, Kandivali (W), she started at St. Teresa’s Convent, Santacruz (W) and finished her schooling at St. Joseph’s Convent, Bandra – after moving to Bandra. From a young age, she was good in needlework and helped stitch costumes for school plays. Pamela started tailoring in her late teens, after completing a professional course – and opened a shop: ‘Pamela Ladies Dressmaker’ in 1956; at Hilal Building on Dr. Mascarenhas Road, Mazagaon. At that time, not many young women would have dared to start their own business. However, she was confident & capable of handling the many tailors, who worked for her. Pam specialized in bridal gowns and evening outfits. She loved designing gowns & dresses to suit the individual likes & physique of each person. She also made artificial cloth flowers for bridal bouquets – and would work late into the night to meet deadlines; handcrafting headgears, hats (when they were in vogue), tiaras & veils. BEST DRESSMAKER IN TOWN: All the gowns & dresses for weddings, communions, christenings, navjotes, festivals & special occasions were cut by her. Hence, Pamela was known for giving her clients a “Perfect Fit”. She was also good with hand embroidery, beadwork,

She has even tailored outfits for the Middle Eastern, Punjabi, Sindhi and Parsi communities. Her fame spread through word of mouth, when a satisfied client recommended Pamela, as “the best dressmaker in town”. In the 1980s, Pamela shifted her business operations of ‘Pamela Bridal Gowns’, from Mazagaon to the ground floor of a building at Pali Naka. Here clientele followed her there! CLASS OF HER OWN: Many women still possess & wear her creations with pride. As one of her loyal clients remarked, “Pam will always be remembered as a very talented & dedicated seamstress in a class of her own & associated with happy occasions, as she made women look beautiful on their special day – even going personally to help dress them on their wedding day. LYPM: Save your parks, Save your lungs, Save your life VALERIAN D’COSTA COMMUNITY REPORTER For the past few months, two individuals having been taking that extra step to encourage citizens to come out and enjoy our parks while they’re there. Anca Abraham and Tina Stephens have taken it upon themselves to spark that love for the parks we once used to enjoy; the time before technology took over our lives. Mothers of toddlers, both Tina and Anca have been visiting parks around Bandra with their children in tow trying to de-stress from the hectic urban life that our city presents us with. But more often than not the parks they visit have rules that defy the very purpose of their existence. For a city like Mumbai, where finding a quiet, peaceful place amidst nature seems like a search for snow in the desert, public parks are the common man’s only place to unwind. With that in mind, Tina and Anca initiated Love Your Parks Mumbai (LYPM).

After much mulling over, LYPM took shape in late October when Anca and Tina invited Tristan Knelange, a Dutch singer and choir conductor, to help a group of citizens rehearse and perform a fun mix of Pop and Christmas songs. For five weeks, the group - comprising singers having varied abilities from around the neighbourhood - met twice a week to practise for performances at Patwardhan Park and Joggers Park which took place earlier this month. “Parks are meant to de-stress, to unwind, to be free. LYPM was initiated to bring our community closer, hence, the choir and the singing. It’s beauty that will change the world and we want to use different art forms to get people of different ages together to enjoy in the midst of nature. An ideal park is one that is open to people at all times of the day, where you can sit on the grass and have a picnic, have a sense of freedom,” says Tina, who enjoys spending time with her young son at the parks around her home.

“The idea is to get local people to enjoy the spirit of community by coming together. We want to build on this initiative by organising more such events that foster a community spirit, like story-telling or maybe poetry, or even dancing and yoga for that matter,” continues Tina, who rightly believes residents in the area must have a say in the plans for the open spaces and parks around them. And while Anca, a landscape and interior designer, and Tina, a photographer, work towards the objective of getting the community enjoy their parks, they believe it’s you and me that can help restore the parks around us. “Most parks

in the city have crumbling or dangerous infrastructure or dirty or no washrooms at all. With plenty of citizens depending on these parks for their leisure, it’s important they also get involved in deciding what’s good and what’s not at these parks,” says Anca. “Plenty of children and college students visit these parks and enjoy the company of their friends playing games or singing or just relaxing. In the absence of such parks, they’d probably be spending their time in unwanted activities,” adds Anca, who enjoyed their first of many-to-come events at the Patwardhan Park and Joggers Park.

Sherly Rajan experiencing step motherly treatment: Stephen Noronha Sherly Rajan seems to be experiencing step-motherly treatment by all concerned authorities. The road surface from Rizvi College thro’ Mala & reaching Perry Road via New Kantwadi – has been the bone of contention for several years. Then, the New DP Road from the well next to Sea Gull Apts. that links to ‘Khau Galli’ & Union Park – is like no-man’s land. Solar lights have been installed here by earlier corporators, but have not been maintained. Why is this sad situation prevalent here? Activist Manohar Sawant (name changed) told us, “If the BMC could build the DP Road, why is it that they are not installing lights, maintaining the surface & keeping it clean? Heavy vehicles are parked here, auto rickshaws & cars use this road

for shady activities, people urinate behind these vehicles – & with no proper lighting, this place is a couple’s paradise. We regularly hear screams & shouts – & no one dares go to help, as criminals use this road as their hunting ground. Surely rapes & murders can happen anytime, here. In fact, there were rumours of a body in a suitcase, thrown here. We have seen BMC trucks come here to dump garbage. The current corporator has told us that her hands are tied, as this road has not been handed over to the BMC.” Social Activist Steven Noronha intervened, saying that this is Petit Trust land & that it was a builder who built this road, to create an access road to his complex. Now, this matter is in court. In this area, the actual voter turnout is very

low, so political candidates feel that citizens living here do not count for them. Hence, we get a step motherly treatment by elected representatives & the BMC. He added, “I am frustrated that nothing positive is being done here at Sherly Rajan, to benefit common citizens” Another activist, from ALM 114, told us that there are groups of people who sell balloons, who live here, bathing & washing on a daily basis. Tankers & generator vans find this the ideal parking spot. Car breakdowns are being repaired here, while rickshaws are being washed. Where does the water come from? In short, this road is chaotic & a total mess.

These issues need to be highlighted in the media, for action to be taken – as we just being taken for a ride, by our elected representatives. Mohsen Ali

The Photography Store Bandra’s Newest Art Project! PORUS TAVADIA COMMUNITY REPORTER An old idiom says – “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words!” For the majority of us, whenever we need to snap a picture, we whip out the ubiquitous mobile phone, open the camera application, and simply point & shoot. Little do we realise the vast difference between the way the general public captures an image; versus the tedious, back-breaking and painstaking process that the professional photographer has to go through to get that perfect shot. Globe trotter Kenneth Lawrence, is one such professional photographer, for whom photography is a religion. A ‘native’ of Bandra, Kenneth was driven by a burning passion to capture and treasure the moments, and the life around him, since the age of 15 years, in Cape Town, South Africa. In Kenneth’s own words – “Photography truly is the ultimate power of observation”. It is to be appreciated & acknowledged that professional photography is an art form that is to be studied, & skill-sets honed over innumerable practice sessions. And even after all that there is always room for improvement. For him, each image has been & will be a labour of love, passion and tremendous commitment to the art of photography. His motto is – “Photography is storytelling, make sure you tell great ones!” A graduate in Film Direction, Ken-

neth Lawrence founded ‘Bullhorn Pictures’ in 2010, a successful film & media production company that has won many accolades & acclaim. ‘Bullhorn Pictures’ has produced content for BBC, National Geographic, Discovery, Bennett & Coleman, Incredible India, Viacom18, Taj Hotels, Honda, Suzuki, Red Bull, PepsiCo, Budweiser & Corning Gorilla Glass – to name a few. A while back, Kenneth was browsing through the thousands of photographs shot over the past so many years, in some of the most beautiful places on Earth, and he realised that it was time to share his passion for photography, with the world. ‘The Photography Store’ was born out of Kenneth’s vision to generate a greater awareness and appreciation in the viewer, of the remarkable beauty of our blue planet – respecting and protecting its many ecosystems. Kenneth says – “My fascination became a passion and that passion became an obsession”. Kenneth also envisages that ‘The Photography Store’ will excite & encourage people to appreciate the art of photography, which is best exhibited when a photograph is professionally printed. It reinforces the fact, that a framed photography print, not only captures memories, but also demonstrates a consistent emotional pull over the viewer that immerses them within the scene. part of Bandora, geographically as well as in the administrative sense. While a lot is known about this period of our local history, here is a visual record of the Pestilence - once considered one of the “Four Horsemen of the Much has been spoken about the plague Bandora) in 1897. Plague crosses still dot Apocalypse”, that left behind its mark, that swept Bombay at the end of the Bandra, as well as parts of Danda and tangible remnants of which are still visi19th century, and ravaged Bandra (then Santa Cruz - areas that were then all but ble today, 122 years later.

As overall infrastructure seems to be crumbling in Bandra and our surrounding suburbs, we would do well to remember this dark chapter of our past, lest we encounter the Horseman again! So today, the pictures of the Plague of 1897 in Bandora, tell their tale.

Continued from Page 1 Midnight mass was beautiful in those days. Oh how adorable the Bandra girls looked all dressed up to go for a Christmas Dance! It was a great thing to be asked out for a Christmas dance. And the handsome young men in dark suits looked dashing while trying to copy John Travolta. The next morning went in distributing Christmas sweets. Bandra was an open house. Christmas Lunch was heavenly... fugias, sannas, chicken shakuti, sorpotel, roast, vindaloo, chan-

na, yellow pea pulao ....accompanied with high spirits. There was no vodka, so Old Monk Rum did the rounds. And the good old Bandraite never ever forgot to visit the Mount during the Christmas Season. The Lady in gold and blue on the top of the hill always protected her Bandra. I miss my old Bandra. Times change. Roads get narrower and congested. The cottages have disappeared. Hilton, Mulchand, Bandra Talkies, Casbah & Irani’s and have long gone away. And so have many of our old folks.

Dear Reader, December decides the agenda for the New Year – as groups huddle to plan ahead. Being the hub of social & political activities, Bandra has plenty of buzz, all around – at clubs, coffee shops, bars, restaurants; not forgetting Bandra’s Bazaar (where gossip is the name of the game). Aunty Anna interacts with Uncle Ken about Leroy & Lily’s wedding; while Sunil & Sunita networks with Hashim, Harry, Homi & Haresh, discussing about their new start-up business. With elections just around the corner, politicians will do anything to gain visibility – neighbourhood events at Bandra’s scenic spots to woo communities, musical events at auditoriums & seminars to show that they really care to address your issues. You are requested to block dates to enjoy entertaining and informative programmes – with the concerned politician making an appearance during the peak of the show, getting maximum audience visibility, which could transform into votes. December dates spill on to January – prime time, before elections. Banners claiming credit for civic work (that is

their duty anyway, as elected representatives) spring up overnight – with ‘Season’s Greetings’ and faces of politicians, to add that personal touch. It is all about notes for votes. This scenario leads to the ‘Dance of Democracy’, in 2019 – and this time, the results are anybody’s guess. Bandra Buzz – your favourite neighbourhood newspaper is evolving at a faster pace, than before. The New Year will see creative changes that will enhance the way we disseminate news, views & reviews, that you can use.

The Christmas Buzzaar

EDWIN FERNANDES COMMUNITY REPORTER I guess the nearness to Bazaar Road, inspired the residents of Waroda Road and Chapel Road to come up with the concept of their own Bazaar, a Christmas Bazaar on December 9, 2018. Believe me, it caused quite a Buzz! These two roads, for long in the shadows of the more touted and so called upscale Hill Road, have now come into their own. The Coming of Age, as it were. What exactly is this Christmas Bazaar? Hitherto it was only the Gymkhanas in Bandra and Santacruz which hosted these close knit community enjoyable affairs. Waroda and Chapel Road residents have shown that they too have the acumen and savoir- faire to host such fairs. This Waroda Road and Chapel Road Christmas Bazaar (6-10 pm), was the brainchild of Mario Fishery, Nerius, Claude and Rakesh, all passionate residents of this area. In the past especially during Mario’s Grandfather’s and Dad’s time, when residents were not so many and were all known to each other, they used to organise music jamborees on Church Street. Sort of lame parties. Those were the days when majority if not all residents were Catholic, so organising small music events were no big deal. The community had common interests. Today the seen has changed dramatically. Other communities have flocked to Bandra and these quaint areas in particular, perhaps because of the peaceful surroundings. So this group of youngsters had quite a job in hand, organising this Christmas Bazaar, which was an exercise in stitching together the various communities which have made Waroda and Chapel Roads their homes. The efforts were definitely worth it as the tremendous success of the Christmas Bazaar has shown. The early date was because they wanted to have it before

the large Gymkhanas hosted their own Christmas Bazaars. The Bazaar had everything but everything besides food and Christmas decor, including handicraft stuff made by the kids. Thompson of Bollywood fame also styled hair. Residents were also encouraged to bring out the stuff not being used by them out in the open for sale. So it was an amalgamation of a garage sale as well. The local Church Community was solidly behind the project and was a big help. Entry was free. 15/20 stalls were out there in the narrow confines of the Church Street, bustling with activity. Even the sellers were not charged. The idea was to have fun. Many of the members spontaneously came forward with funding. Local MLA Adv Ashish Shelar was also a benefactor and gave some funds too. The Organisers appreciated his efforts to foster community spirit and presented an award to him. Church Street holds a vantage location as besides Waroda and Bazaar Road, it connects Hill Road, the Reclamation and other places. Mario believes the rest of Bandra evolved from Church Street. His vision is to bring back the lost glory to Church Street and make it the hub/ centre point of activities once more. The Bazaar drew huge crowds. Relatives of residents living in Borivali, Thane and other places too came for it. Tweets and Facebook messages of support came in from USA, Canada etc. The event received extensive coverage in the Press and Facebook as well. The community spirit does not stop with the holding of the Christmas Bazaar. Now the neighbourhood kids are involved in painting and beautifying the walls in the locality. This too is creating waves and some TV crews have already covered the artistic designs. More power to your collective elbows young Organisers, go full steam ahead. Bandra needs guys with vision like you.

The Wonder of Graceland

There are very few people who can be recognized globally by their first name. Elvis was one of them. Elvis had a presence. You felt him even when you couldn’t see him, says Bandra resident Verus Ferreira who visited Graceland and was left teary eyed.

Clockwise: The Graceland mansion ; The piano Elvis used the night before he died and The last jumsuit Elvis wore at his concert Elvis Presley’s Graceland was always on my bucket list, and when friends Renuka Rose and Marc Taube invited me and my family for a holiday to their home in Cleveland, I jumped at the offer especially when they said we could visit Graceland. What I didn’t know was my adventurous friend Marc, pitching an idea of a road trip to Tupelo the birthplace of Elvis, Nashville, Memphis (Graceland) and St Louis and back to Cleveland. After soaking in the sights of Cleveland’s iconic Rock N Roll Hall of Fame & other places, we were looking forward to the trip of a lifetime. Well stocked for the jaunt in a four wheel drive SUV, we headed out one early morning for a long drive to Columbus. A night halt & then onto Tupelo, the birthplace of Elvis. A tour ($18) takes you into the modest two room shack, museum & Church. It’s hard to believe how humble Elvis really was & how great a star he went on to become. Elvis’ Graceland lies near Graceland Hotel on Elvis Presley Boulevard. There are many budget hotels nearby. It is advisable to book your tickets online to avoid serpentine queues. You can opt for The Ultimate VIP Tour ($169) that gets you a personal tour guide, a meal voucher, an exclusive lounge & a chance to view & hold some rare exhibits of the King. The pass also lets you make multiple return visits to the exhibits before closing time. There’s also the Elvis Entourage ($96) & the most popular $59 Elvis Experience Tour. All tours have a mandatory interactive iPad. Once on the tour you would be drooling over the man & his almost unbelievable, superhuman charisma. I went crazy to see the home where he had lived, breathed, sang, made love to Priscilla

and years later breathed his last. Our eight member group, (yes I opted for the Ultimate VIP Pass), began just outside the museum, when we were bused across the street to a sweeping lawn and into the environs of the Graceland mansion. The two storied limestone mansion with green shutters, white Corinthian pillars, and two white marble lions, beckons every visitor aka Elvis fan. The Living room has 15 foot long white sofa, gold drapes, peacock stained glass windows. A staircase leading to the first floor was out of bounds for visitors and probably is only accessible to Elvis’ wife Priscilla and his only child Lisa Marie. You can feel Elvis’ presence as you wander though the mansion, maybe seated at his Dining table. Move ahead and you have the kitchen with a vintage blender, fridge, microwave oven, wash basin and cabinets. The tropical rain forest evoking Jungle Room with stone walls, carved heavy wood Polynesian furniture also has part of the walls covered in green shag rug with a non functioning waterfall. You couldn’t miss out the Teddy Bear seated on the sofa nearby. His French dynasty-inspired Billiards Room (Pool room) was decorative to the core, with its tuck-and-draped ceiling made of 350

yards of heavy brocade fabric; the media room was all lemon yellow and black with a mirrored ceiling for good effect, where the ‘King’ sat and watched television, not one but three TVs. There are a couple of LP records around with a white porcelain monkey on the centre glass table. In the Trophy room, the walls are lined with silver & gold records, while his Racquetball building houses the piano that was used by him to entertain his friends. It’s the same piano he played the night before day he passed away on 16th August 1977 at the age of 42. A passage leads you to his father’s office where a host of exhibits are displayed. Elvis was a cowboy at heart. Out on the lawns you can watch horses graze, but none of these are Elvis’, namely the most famous Rising Sun, who was the last to die in 2005. After another gallery of exhibits, you then head outside to a kidney shaped swimming pool that overlooks the Meditation garden, Elvis’ favorite space at Graceland. It’s where he lies buried alongside his parents Gladys and Vernon, Grandmother Minnie Mae & his twin brother Jesse, who died at childbirth. I spent awhile in reflection of his great spirit. I couldn’t hold back the

tears, but I wasn’t alone, diehard fans were weeping, staring at his grave, praying at his gravesite, feeling his presence. Back in the bus & across the road the tour continues with the Museum exhibits that follows Elvis life & career gaining insights into his roots, influences & artistry, his movies & his life in the army. I swooned over every photo gushing about just how handsome he was. There’s lots to see from his Automobile Museum that has over 20 cars, including the black 1973 Stutz Blackhawk III, the car he used the night before he died. There’s the Lisa Marie Convair 880 aircraft, the fashionable outfits he wore on stage, one better than the other, it is all here. Elvis loved dressing up, just wearing what he liked & felt right; he became a fashion icon that everyone followed. Our tour ended with the secret room. Here our select group got a chance to see his comb, the necklace and ring he gave Priscilla, and the microphone he used. I almost wept with delight as I held the microphone. It was a magical moment for me, something I would always cherish for the rest of my life. The Elvis Presley story does not end at Graceland. Head to Downtown Memphis to visit Sun Studio where his career started. Learn all about the birthplace of Rock n Roll, you can even stand on the spot where Elvis stood (I unknowingly did), take a picture with the microphone Elvis, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis used. You can also grab a bite or a beer at the BB King Bar or Hard Rock Café on Beale Street. Elvis’ charisma, style and that deep melodic voice that measured every word is unforgettable. So rich, velvety. It was Elvis’ dream to sing. He taught us, that dreams can come true. Courtesy: Afternoon DC
