Hockey wins as St. Stanislaus launches its own FIH approved Hockey Turf

Even as the Indian men’s team were celebrating their third-place victory over Germany in the finals of the Hockey World League in Odisha, a few hundred kilometres away a few Indian hockey greats were celebrating a victory of another kind - the dawn of a new standard in the school sporting circle - at St. Stanislaus High School in Bandra. The suburb, and especially St. Stanislaus school, which has for many years now served as a hotbed for producing exceptional talent at the national and international level saw the inauguration of the brand new ‘Father Donnely Astro Park’ at the St. Stanislaus Sports Complex. What is striking about the Astro Park is its FIH approved EdelGrass turf, which is among the finest field hockey surfaces in the world.

Emphasizing the need for this surface, principal, Ms Correa said, “Our school has in the past produced the country’s finest players in the likes of Joaquim Carvalho, Marcellus Gomes, Viren Rasquinha, Olympians & so many more but we cannot afford to rest on our laurels. There’s a huge difference between playing on grass & playing on astro-turf & we have been hoping for this for a long time. Having to practise on grass & then play their games on astro turf, our children have always been at a disadvantage. The only way we can move forward is by taking the next step. Our school has an entire bank of talent & we are trying to give the children the best to discover, nurture & produce the best.” Valerian D’Costa Contd. on Page 10 >>

Hell Roads of Bandra Due to BMC’s ongoing road repairs in Bandra, narrowing of pavements instead of widening for the benefit of pedestrians, has become a nightmare for vehicular traffic and common public. This sort of work of digging and laying paver blocks should be done at nights without causing any hindrance to the general user. It is nonsensical to see BMC workers on roads blocking pathways with PVC moulded barriers, leaving hardly any space for people to walk. Why is the Assistant Commissioner of H West Ward not attending to the inconvenience of Bandra residents using footpaths for ease of walking. Where are his supervisors and are they absent from site to understand & know the hardship faced by residents of their own ward. It appears that BMC road and drainage department do things as and when they feel like. There is a time to do things. There

must be plan which should consider all aspects of the job on hand. In the present case it appears that BMC goes about doing its own things in its own way, without following any rules in the guide book. Just because it is a Corporation and the caretaker of the city’s municipal needs, does not mean we the residents of H West Ward should be put into severe inconvenience. I am positive that such type of things will not be tolerated near Mantralaya or the Governor’s residence because there the ‘Babu’s’ will swing into action immediately or else they will be transferred to the districts. But here in Bandra it is not so unless you staying next to ‘Matoshree’. As it is walking or even driving a two wheeler on Hill Road has become a nightmare and now with digging and surfacing, it has become a Hell Road during peak hours in the mornings and evenings. Where are our Corporators and MLA’s, the so-called guardians of our Ward? Why are they not attending to the problems faced by the public who have elected them to voice our grievance with the Corporation? Perhaps they are too busy searching for new vote banks for the next election. Unfortunately, as always we have cast our precious vote to the wrong candidates and now we have to pay for our fol-

lies. Each and every time the public is in distress or disturbed by noise pollution, illegal encroachments and other civic matters, it is the Bombay High Court that steps in the interest of the public. But for how long can this nonsense go on? Do we have to wait until the next BMC election to throw out the useless incumbent, devoid of proper sense. Mumbai has already nicknamed its own self as the ‘Maximum City’. Now its showing the other side of its own image, hopeless administration. The question asked most often in debates is what ails Mumbai? Its our attitude and culture. The city is bursting at the seams and the elders who have been drag-

ging their feet all along of infrastructure development, are now scratching their heads for viable solutions. Why did 23 commuters die from stampede at Elphinstone Bridge? It is because of the government’s and apathy of the railways. Unless and until a tragedy happens, nothing moves and nothing is done. In the meantime our ‘netas’ are busy with shaddy deals to rake in the moolah when the sun shines. We need a strong leader at the Center, who can rule with an iron fist and not make false promises just to fool the public for votes. Amar Singh Image Credit: Josh Photography

Kick up your heels at Patwardhan Park The Rao Saheb Patwardhan Park, now offers a perfected slice of nature, free of charge, for children and adults alike. The 14,591 sqm land, built in 1994, was a bitter bone of contention between residents, the BMC & the Kamla Raheja Foundation owing to its restriction on sports and entry-fee hikes. Following its resolution, this November, the ground is now under the BMC’s care and has opened its gates for sports and free play. Despite being labeled as a ‘Recreation Ground’ (RG), the foundation disallowed children from playing sports for nearly three decades as it could harm visitors and warp greenery. “After eight-long years of unceasing petitions to the CM, MC, AMC, DMC, MLA and every person in authority along with a signature campaign that gathered 599 supporters in July, 2017, the ground will now ensure that children have an enclosed and safe place to play,” said Aftab Siddique. “Within the three kilometer radius surrounding the park, there is no playground except for Patwardhan. Since the children were not permitted to play in the park, they were left with either the

busy streets or the swanky gymkhanas that charged exorbitantly,” she added. Depriving children of these facilities make them prone to shady zones and tech-addiction. With numerous colleges in the vicinity, college students horsed around the 15 bars or pubs close to the park. Lined with coconut trees and bound by a walking track and soft lawn, that is perfect for scooting down on your bottom, the park displays a crisp organic environment for yoga and picnics. A small plot behind the park, also under the BMC, is equipped with courts for volleyball and basketball and a skating rink. However, plans for incorporating a cricket pitch and netting facilities in the play area of the garden and an underground parking space are under way. “The ruling has led to kids hustling off to play as soon as they reach home,” said Siddique. To maintain the peaceful ambiance for adults and avoid injuries, specific time slots are designed. While kids can kick up their heels in the yard from 10 am to 4.30 pm, adults can wander down the trail from 5.30 am to 10 am & 4 pm to 9 pm everyday. Sharlene Lobo

Promote Harmony this Festive Season It’s hard to believe that we are in the last month of 2017. I assume many of you like me are wondering how the year flew by so quickly. Ensure harmony in your home this festive season with these 7 tips for Christmas: • I strongly suggest you do space and clutter clearing before Christmas. This allows you to make more space to welcome in friends, family & opportunities in the New Year 2018. • Keep the center of your living room clear so that family members have a focal point where they may gather. Remove that large coffee table from the centre to let the ‘chi’ flow easily. • Place sofas and seating in your living room in a circular or octagonal shape

which encourages easy communication. Avoid L-shaped arrangements that may cause imbalance or one family member to feel cut off from the rest. • Sit at an oval or round shaped dining table to maintain family harmony as this is less conducive to arguments and conflicts than a rectangular or square table. If you do not have one, then add some round items, for example dishes and table decorations. • Put sharp knives out of sight in the kitchen. Place them in drawers. This symbolically lessens the scope for irritability and family arguments. • Fill your home with light. Keep your rooms well lit with scented candles to boost the moods of family and friends. • Bring warmth into your home by using the color red. Choose red pillows, table covers & seasonal decorations to make rooms feel more alive. Poinsettias with its bright red leaves will instantly boost your energy.

Regardless of what you are rushing to get done before the year end, please do spend time with your family and friends during this festive holiday season. Take time off work, slow down, and spend that special time with those who are most important to you. For we can never take for granted that circumstances may not change, and those who are closest and mean the most to us in our life may not be there to share the next wonderful holiday season. After all, there is always next year to get those important things done. I wish you a Merry Christmas. May the festive season bring you joy, peace and harmony. Today, more so than ever before, our bodies are suffering from unnecessary wear and tear due to our unhealthy lifestyles. Our diets, largely consisting of fast food, lack essential nutrients, while the hustle and bustle of a busy schedule leave little time for an active, health-promoting way of life. Add to that - chronic stress, insufficient sleep and increased exposure to our city’s dangerous toxins and pollutants and it’s easy to find a devastatingly noxious cycle that pulls us down. Gradually, we tend to have a reduced vitality. Chronic inflammation, stemming from this unhealthy cycle, can lead to some very serious health conditions. Decades ago, this slow-down used to start after 60 years. Today, it is 40 – or, with stress, even lower. Women & men face many different health issues & cannot be addressed in the same way. Oestrogen is not just a female hormone, but an integral key to the well-being of ladies all over the globe, because it controls how they feel, and how they look. The Gospel a-la - A Bandra Centurion It’s not only the Virat Kohlis and Rohit Sharmas who are notching up centuries these days. Mrs. Catherine Lobo of Virendra Colony (on the junction of Hill Road and BJ Road), celebrated her hundred birthday on November 25, 2017. What a fantastic achievement by any standards. I have known Aunty Kate, as we fondly called her, ever since I was a toddler. She lives one floor above us. Aunty Kate is a stupendous lady. At hundred years, all her faculties are intact. Contrast this with people who in their sixties today are already showing signs of dementia. Aunty Kate has 6 children scattered in places like Australia, Pune and Goa. All turned up for the week long but low key celebrations. I had gone to the airport to receive Pam her youngest daughter. We must have reached her home at 3.30 am. Would you believe Aunty Kate the sprightly centurion, at that unearthly hour quickly retired to the kitchen and brewed me a cup of refreshing tea? Amazing. This is what being independent is all about. She truly walks the talk, when others 3/4ths her age can neither walk nor talk. Today, her faithful companions – her microwave, fridge, gas stove and telephone help her along this beautiful journey of life. The ditty: May you live to be, a 103 (and beyond), is not at all farfetched in her case! Aunty Kate is a Bandra girl to the core. She was born at home at Chapel Road Bandra. She is a living historian of Bandra and Mumbai (Bombay). To hear her rattle off episodes and narratives will keep you spell bound. Bandra was idyllic, unpolluted, under populated and sheer bliss. Chapel Road then was not as narrow as it is today. The street was less crowded and boys played football on the road. The girls played seven tiles, langdi, hopscotch. Simple pleasures indeed.

Later Aunty Kate’s father bought a small cottage at St. John Baptist Road where the present Rose Minar stands. The compound was big enough to set up a shamiana to hold wedding receptions. Those were halcyon days, residents were woken up in the mornings not by alarm clocks but by roosters raucous crowing. Bandra was a pretty place with every tiled house having its own garden. Pali Hill was the first choice abode for the Britishers. Mount Mary Hill was very sparsely populated and was quite a lonely place, forbidding even in the afternoons. The Land’s End they knew then was at Mount Carmel’s Church. There was no reclamation, no Lilavati Hospital no unending traffic – only the beautiful sea playing out an endless symphony. There were plenty of foliage and open spaces. Oh yes, pigs those natural scavengers, were a plenty too. Perhaps that’s why the phrase: If you throw a stone in Bandra it will land on a Pereira or a pig! Aunty Kate says that they bought their stock of eggs, coconuts and even chicken and suckling from neighbours. Everybody knew each other and was very friendly. People also walked and cycled a lot. For long distances, tongas were used. Bandra was quaint and homely. The structure standing outside St. Andrew’s Church opposite Khoja Florists, is actually a water trough, where horses used to quench their thirst. Bandstand was very picturesque, like a mini Hill Station. British Army Bands would play on Sunday evenings at both Chotta Bandstand and the main Bandstand. Mrs. Catherine Lobo in 1938 & 2017

Residents would come along with their families to listen to these bands, munching on cucumber sandwiches. The bhelpuri wallahs were still to make an appearance. Aunty Kate says with a twinkle in her eye: Then, we used to have a whale of a time at Bandstand. Today people have a bhel of a time! Aunty Kate grew up without electricity at home. They used kerosene lamps. The more affluent had petromax lamps. She recalls the streets

had gas lamps. A man was engaged to physically switch these on and off. Virendra Colony her present home, was then a mini forest, which she used to pass by on her way to St. Andrew’s School. She little knew that one day this very mini forest would be her home from the year 1958. Aunty Kate got married in the year 1938 when she was 20 years. Her husband was employed by the Railways (BBCI). She had her share of transfers to

places like Jhansi & also living in Railway quarters, meeting people from all over the country. An excellent raconteur, Aunty Kate remembers the day the ship Fort Stikine blew up in the Bombay docks on April 14, 1944. She heard the explosion in Bandra. She stills laments the loss of lives and havoc the explosion caused. During the time of the 2nd World War, her brother was to get married. Aunty Kate was to take charge of the catering. Days before the wedding, the Municipality suddenly issued an order that in view of austerity measures, no celebration could have more than 25 guests. For people of Bandra who had large families and neighbours who needed no invitation, this was a body blow. Her brother cancelled the reception rather than annoy relatives and friends by not inviting them. He even put an ad in the Times of India, to state that he would not be having a reception! So caring. Values were certainly different then. Aunty Kate loves to cook even now. Extremely fastidious, she pulls up her children when their cooking does not match up to her exacting standards. Aunty Kate is the undoubted Matriarch of her large and extended family and still directs operations like an experienced Army General. Come on Bandra, let’s not only Celebrate Bandra. Let’s also celebrate the remarkable Aunty Kate, it’s still not too late! Edwin Fernandes

Hill Road - Uphill Task The widening of Hill Road has been under the scanner for long as one can remember. It has had more opposition from business establishments, commercial outlets and religious organizations that at one time almost a decade ago the whole proposal of widening Hill Road had to be shelved. But now in the interest of Bandra residents and shoppers from all over the world, BMC has put its foot down and gone ahead with its plans to widen from its present 60 feet to 90 feet. To shoppers and residents this comes as big relief because of the inconvenience to pedestrians. Sometimes walking in such congested traffic with hawkers in the way and moving traffic on the other side is dangerous, especially with reckless bikers. There has not been any serious incident of being run over by a speeding vehicle on Hill Road, but that does not mean that it won’t happen. People are busy and their minds are focused on what to buy at a bargain price, without giving a thought to the safety of the road. The biggest road block to this widening project of Hill Road has been from business establishments, who have vehemently opposed to the project and wanting to restore a stay through the courts. These greedy businessmen are not willing to relocate to the by lanes or undertake a

setback. They have been doing business in the same premises for more than 50 years. They started their enterprise when walking on Hill Road was a pleasure, but now the scene has changed with shoppers not only from Bandra and the suburbs, zeroing in for the best bargains, but also tourists from other parts of India and foreign countries have become a common sight on Hill Road. These stall owners with their structures occupying footpaths have formed a union to fight for their rights to prevent eviction and demolition by the BMC. Fifty years back this may have sounded logical, but now in this present age it is definitely absurd and ridiculous to think of opposing the widening of Hill Road. Neither the government nor the judiciary is going to accept their plea for a stay order. There is also the question of acquiring space from a few religious organizations that come in the pathway of Hill Road. Notably two such religious bodies will have to adhere to the new setbacks and make way for road widening. Shrines will have to be relocated even if it hurts the sentiments of worshippers, for it is in the interest of the general public and the government at large. St. Stanislaus High School which encompasses the more than 150 years old St. Peter’s Church and the Parsi

Agiary will have to receive good compensation for sacrificing their land. The same follows with Bandra Police Station, which will also have to do away with a part of its compound. There are also a few shops that are coming in the way and which also have been ear marked for demolition. These will definitely be the first to follow the setback procedures because they are completely obstructing the smooth flow of traffic due its protrusion butting out and causing a severe bottleneck at three locations. They are commercial outlets near Rizvi Chambers, shops opposite Nature’s Basket and a prominent eatery at the junction of Hill Road and St. Peter’s Road.

To sum it up, this process of road widening has been dragging its foot for quite long. It should have been done during the last Development Plan. Now things have reached such a sorry state that Bandraites and visitors are simply fed up with Hill Road congestion. They have tolerated for long the apathy of police and BMC neglect to shoo away the menace from roadside hawkers. If this was Shanghai, it would have been done in a jiffy. But then this is not Shanghai, its ‘Amchi Mumbai’, where collection of hafta is more important to elected representatives and officials, than goodwill for the people. Amar Singh

Bandra Reclamation to get a Yoga Garden soon Along with the scenic Mahim bay’s majestic horizon, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and the huge National flag rising high - this green patch at the Bandra Reclamation is the perfect setting for rejuvenating your body, mind and soul. Many feet below the highway leading to the sea-link, this area was famous for a lot of notorious action, especially post sunset. After beautifying it with good landscaping, today it is the pride of Bandra. This Yoga Garden will be at the Bandra promenade, in proximity of the National Tricolor. The Yoga Garden project proposes to interconnect health, environment & patriotism. It will have a pleasant combination of greenery, vertical gardens and yogic vibrations. A system to control natural soil & murals depicting this beautiful design will be incorporated. This project will add to the beauty of Mumbai city, by promoting good health and yoga culture. On 9th November 2017, local MLA Adv Ashish Shelar inaugurated the proposed Yoga Garden in Bandra - with a Rs 1 crore sponsorship by ONGC representative, Gen.

Manager S.K. Sinha, who said that money was not an issue, but benefits should reach citizens. He elaborated that the project should be functional before 26th January 2018, as decided. A. Shivamji is the design architect for this project. Time will tell, if this project will be the ‘Pride of Bandra’. Alka Kelkar told the audience that Yoga was ‘a way of life’ in earlier times – and today it is equally important. It started in ancient India, but today it is being practiced worldwide. Ashishji thanked the audience for attending, in spite of the hot sun. He said that this scenic spot was similar to spaces abroad – and its value would be enhanced by having a Yoga Garden, for

improving the health of citizens. This concept was unique and a first of its kind. Hemant Kumar, who had attended this function, told us, “This park will go a long way to benefit all who are health conscious. I am sure it will be a Great Yoga landmark, under our proud national flying flag. This is real development. Dhanyavad, for this inauguration.” Later, the Bhoomi Poojan for the Yoga Park was done by all the main dignitaries. Bandraites will soon have a unique landmark: One of its kind in India – and more importantly, for a prime suburb, a better ‘entry point’. Bandra Buzz Team

“The Immortality Trigger cemented in my mind why Douglas Misquita is my favourite Indian thriller author”- Newton Lewis Our generation grew up on a staple diet of books, borrowing Enid Blyton, Richmal Crompton, Agatha Christie from the school library; graduating with the risqué James Hadley Chase, and Harold Robbins; and onward, to philosophers like Ayn Rand and Khalil Gibran. Millennials will add action-adventure thriller novelist, Douglas Misquita, to their #readinglist. Douglas’ literary journey began in 1993 – captivated by Jurassic Park. Fascinated by the author’s power to hold sway over readers, Douglas handwrote his first adventure in a 100-page school notebook! Soon, more short stories and novellas followed. Unbeknownst, he was practicing a rule every author must abide by: write what you would like to read.

In 2010, Douglas released Haunted, a gritty, fast, action thriller. In 2011, came the Secret of the Scribe. The Immortality Trigger is his fifth, after The Apocalypse Trigger and Diablo. The hallmark of his books are their fast pace, action and intriguing, interwoven plots. Extensive research goes into his projects. Immortality, the subject of this novel, is not science fiction. There are companies – now – which can cryopreserve your body & resuscitate you when a ‘cure’ for what ails the body is found. Wearable tech, the first of man-machine interfaces, will evolve to downloading memories & consciousness, so that we exist beyond ‘physical constraints’ - as Transhumans! Fascinating stuff! In The Immortality Trigger, Douglas has drawn on Bogota’s drug wars. A Time magazine article on Nazi hunters became a subplot. There are dark chapters on the depravity of Africa’s

rape wars. However, as a writer, Douglas feels the need to spread awareness. Immortality will make society reassess norms: Will mortals accept immortals? What happens to inheritances? Population and procreation? Jobs? Daily sustenance? Who gets to be immortal? Unlike the oft repeated myth, writing never gets easier with time. There’s a constant expectation that he should do better than his previous. Douglas is fastidious with plausibility in fiction, prefers non-linear storytelling, managing multiple points of view over split seconds! There’s a scene on a river, that took three days to sequence and get right, yet transpires over seconds. And all this, while protecting the dogs in the story. Readers will slaughter an author for killing animals, even if they don’t mind humans getting blown away! The paperback is available from Amazon & Flipkart; eBooks, for Kindle, Nook & other readers – the perfect gift for that someone special at Christmas-time! Advent at Ranwar, Rest is History Some things about Ranwar have changed. While few dormant traditions are being revived, some others remain pieces of history. the puff of breath-vapour from your mouth. 70 years ago, the village without streetlights or tar roads, housed over 200 people and regularly held sports and community rosary. The area had a few wells that served for domestic purposes and occasional swims by enthusiastic Ranwarites. In fact, the feast of John the Baptist on 24th June facilitated residents to swim in these wells. A board outside the Ranwar Square hints that the villagers also used the wells as a niche to hide their gold and jewellery from the Arab pirates who occasionally attacked the coast. Dias’ house oversees the Square that harboured weeklong marriage rituals and social affairs. Perched on a chair by the window, she often indulged in

anwar, one of Bandra’s early villages, is native to houses that are at least 100 years old. With its typical Indo-Portuguese colonial-style designs, wooden porches and external staircases, the village is still rustic; untouched by the sheen and plush of the new. When I visited this close-knit community, I was awestruck by the Advent’s glamour this place had to offer. The village’s square verandah, popularly known as the ‘Ranwar Square’ or ‘Hetwadi’ was abuzz with selling activity and a live band. A rendezvous with auntie May Dias unlocked Ranwar’s yesteryear memories,

knitting and sweet-making and was literally a wave away from attending meetings and gatherings in the “friendly neighbourhood”. Christmas Fund, Bandra Feast Fund and Monsoon Fund were among the many funds that fostered picnics and parties. “There is no doubt that we enjoyed more!” exclaims auntie May who is super excited to see her grandchildren for Christmas. She thinks that Ranwar, today, is in the grip of loneliness as the village is only left with a few elders and middle-aged adults. The doors are locked and young generation has flown away. Long evening walks are replaced by chilling at pubs and restaurants. Pulling out three trays filled with handmade marzipan, she recalls, “Today, it’s easier to contribute money than time or effort. Hockey wins as St. Stanislaus launches its own FIH approved Hockey Turf Contd. from Page 1 The school, along with the expertise of Marcellus Gomes, Joaquim Carvalho and Viren Rasquinha, brainstormed over the master-plan, and the end result was an internationally approved Astro Park, more thoughtfully known as the ‘Father Donnely Astro Park.’ The full-sized hockey field also doubles up as an arena for other sports including football and cricket. While the school uses the field for their various sports practices during the day, the field is open for public use in the evenings by booking in advance. The inauguration of the St. Stanislaus Sports Complex, which hosts the Father Donnely Astro Park was attended by the who’s who of hockey including Viren Rasquinha, Dhanraj Pillay, Marcellus Gomes, Adrian D’Souza, Rahul Singh, Devindar Walmiki, Edgar Mascarenhas and Rajat Sharma, who later played an exhibition match. Synthetic grass also enables players to practice in the four months of the monsoon and reduces the chances of injury. Indian hockey wizard, Dhanraj Pillay felt that ‘a great beginning has been made with the laying of this FIH approved turf’. Also in presence at the opening were hockey bigwigs Mervyn Fernandes, Gurbax Singh Grewal & Dr. Vece Paes who egged on the

participants in a round of friendly games played between top hockey schools from around the city. Ms Anna Correa seemed pleased with it all, “I’m really happy that we were finally able to have our very own sports field. Soon, we will also be laying a multi-sports turf surface so that we can have the children practising their games come rain or shine. With these developments, I’m sure we will discover a whole lot of new talent who will be groomed to take the legacy of

our school ahead in producing more famous sports & reach greater heights.” “The thickness of the turf at MHA is 12 mm whereas the turf at St. Stanislaus High School is 20mm thick plus it has a 15mm shock pad under it,” said representatives from Astro Sports Pvt. Ltd. who helped the school set up the Sports Complex. According to them, the turf at St. Stanislaus School was laid keeping in mind that the turf can also be used for other sports like football, cricket etc. which would be a good

option for the entire community to come and play together resulting in enhancing their skills in various sports. For a school that has been renowned for producing top quality hockey players, the wait won’t be long before St. Stanislaus sees a few more of its players going on to represent the country. Well, we can certainly hope, but for now, it’s time to practise! Valerian D’Costa

A Tribute to Sir Oliver Andrade No words would do justice when describing the late Oliver Andrade, a versatile coach, par excellent, but above all a generous warm human being. He was stern yet kind. He brooked no nonsense when in the midst of coaching sessions. He had the “gift of the gab” and a special talent to motivate not only the youth, but anyone he interacted with. He was an achiever to the core & when he set his heart on something, one could be confident that the target would be achieved. Sir Oliver Andrade was a product of St. Stanislaus High School. No wonder that his first love and attachment was towards his Alma Mater. Love for sports ran in his veins. An immediate transformation was seen in St. Stanislaus sports activities when he joined the school staff as a Physical Activities & Sports Coach. Thanks to his endeavors, St. Stanislaus emerged to the forefront of football, hockey & athletics. One can never forget the day, when St. Stanislaus had the distinction of seeing both their A & B teams entering the finals of the Junior Aga Khan Hockey Tournament.

In his later years, he was ready to accept any challenges thrown at him & transformed teams into champions at St. Andrew’s, St. Teresa’s, Fr. Agnel & St. Paul’s (Parel). For a short spell, he even coached the Bombay University Football team, but unfortunately his frank, direct & unconventional approach to sports was not appreciated by the governing bodies of sports at that time. His strong love for the youth & their wellbeing, led him to start the Juvenile Sports Centre at St. Andrew’s ground with the help of late Fr. Rodney Esperance. Juvenile’s was a club to reckon with in the 60’s & 70’s. His popularity & good social work, got him elected as the Municipal Corporator. It was here that he put into action his plan of launching the famous Jogger’s Park with the help of the authorities, a legacy for the people of Bandra. No awards were forthcoming to Sir Oliver Andrade, yet he took all this in his stride. He was a man for all seasons and the greatest satisfaction he derived from, was seeing his wards doing well in life. Edwin D’Souza (an ardent student)

Tête-à-Tête with Deepika of Rhythmus Dance Studio Rhythmus HappyFeet’s dance academy staged a ballet production on December 9th 2017 in IES Auditorium, Bandra. International Ballet dance artists Joan Emery Sia, Elpidio Magat and Czarina Villegas from Ballet Manila, Philippines performed in the ballet production ‘Nutcracker’. We caught up with one of the founders Deepika Ravindran to know more! When did you learn ballet? What drew you towards this particular art form? I have trained in Bharatanatyam since I was a child and was very proficient in it. My exposure to western dancing was through street jazz at the age of 22. I observed that my ballet trained friends had better strength, flexibility and precision in form. I saw a few ballet performances and I was hooked. I started my training under the guidance of world renowned ballet performer and trainer Butch Godito. Ballet is an excellent gateway to most western dance forms. The insistence on precision in ballet pays off and most ballet dancers can adapt to popular western styles like contemporary, jazz, funk and even partner dances like ballroom dancing. This is the reason why ballet is an important part of Rhythmus HappyFeet’s repertoire, along with jazz. I feel that learning ballet provides a student exposure to a truly global art form, rich with history and culture, as most ballet productions are based on influential classical literature and musical arrangements by some of the greatest musicians in history, like Mozart or Tchaikovsky. When did you start your studio? What prompted you to start it? When I was training with Sir Butch at Ashley Lobo’s The Danceworx, I met a very energetic and enthusiastic dancer with a keen business sense, Swara Patel. We noticed that while there are professional and

specialist ballet and jazz training institutes that cater to teens and adults, there were very few academies that specialized in training of toddlers and pre-teens, especially with an age appropriate curriculum and environment. We set to work on that vision and Rhythmus HappyFeet was born. It’s been 6 years since then and today, we have 3 active studios and we are currently training over 700 students. We also have a creative movement programme for toddlers called Agile Kids that is currently taught in 9 schools and we have 11 teachers conducting this programme. How has your experience been over the years as an artist, entrepreneur and teacher? I see myself as a dancer and performer first, and I always focused on the technical and creative aspects of teaching and performing. Fortunately, my partner Swara, along with being a trained dancer, is an MBA with keep business sense. In my journey so far, my greatest learning has been to just hang on and keep pushing, no matter how hard things get & to choose business partners wisely. I strongly believe that no one person can have all the skills in the world, so the people

your

we choose to rely on, defines our success. As a teacher, its continuous learning and studying Ballet. I was a company artist in Ballet Manila for about 9 months. This however, was a bit too late in my career as a dancer but I did get to learn so much from the teachers and dancers there. I got to see and learn how a ballet company works, I got to take everyday intensive ballet classes and also got cast in a modern ballet company production ‘Adarna’. The experience of performing with various ballet professionals from across the world is an experience I wish for my students as well. Hence we are working closely with Ballet Manila to facilitate more scholarships for our students to go to Manila to learn and perform there. Tell us about the convention you had in Bandra last weekend. We had our annual dance recital of our school ‘Rhythmus HappyFeet’. All students of our school are given the opportunity to dance on stage which is choreographed by the teachers of RHF. We had 150 young kids and teenagers dance funk jazz, contemporary and ballet. We also had our scholarship students, company dance and our Zumba team among the more trained dancers. This year however the highlight of the show were the two company dancers ‘Joan Emery Sia’ and ‘Elpidio Magat’ from Ballet Manila, a ballet

company in Manila, Philippines who flew all the way from Philippines to perform for the show. Czarina Villegas who has been with Rhythmus HappyFeet for 5 months now also an ex company member and teacher from Ballet Manila performed a pas de deux (duet) with Magat. How is Mumbai taking to Ballet? Ballet is a very rigorous discipline and it takes patience and a lot of effort. Professional training is very demanding and can be quite expensive too. Ballet involves certain techniques like en pointe, which involves supporting your entire body on the tip of your fully extended toes. Hence dancers who start off at a very early age have a distinct advantage. Beginners to the art form can begin training at a reputed dance academy, and if they find an increased interest, they can join the professional academies in India or abroad. There is an awareness to the art form in Mumbai. But it is still nascent and people are now realizing the investment time and effort involved to perform at professional levels. Hopefully we can contribute towards the progress of Ballet in India. What are your future plans? We are constantly trying to provide quality and international standards to our students. RHF provides scholarship programs to students to attend summer intensive for 2 months in Ballet Manila and we are exploring options for longer duration courses as well. This program is also extended to contracted teachers of RHF as well. I plan to work on creating more such opportunities and continue training my students to be at par with International students and performers. RHF plans to make ballet more accessible to interested kids and young adultes. Prateeksha Nayak

DECEMBER 2017

As this December leads us to 2018, the cold climate heralds Christmas Cheer – as can be seen all along Hill Road, Linking Road and everywhere between. In spite of the GST & Demonetisation, the spirit of die-hard revellers cannot be subdued. We need a reason to celebrate. We need a reason to discard the ‘old’ and bring in ‘new’ mindsets and actions. Soon, we will witness a winter wonderland – here in Bandra. Bandra, being the social hub of activity; there is action around every corner. Aunty’s delicious Christmas cake and sweets are at centre stage – with tree & home decorations a close second. Starlit streets glow – to make us feel “Christmassy”, more and more. Scenes of food delights and dances, that create camaraderie at clubs, social centres & homes, mushroom everywhere. And yet, there are many among us who are blind to the reality of those, who due to their unfortunate situations are doomed to live limited lives. Yes, orphan children, special children and those senior citizens, forced to live in homes for the aged. Can we let them join in the ‘joy’? Will our hearts reach out to spread happiness? Will we care to share? In our quest to enjoy this season of joy, will we miss out the message of ‘Joy To The World’. Yes, it is im-

perative to spread joy to everyone – even to the lesser fortunate. Bandra Buzz has reached her 7th year of circulation – and we are poised for growth. I am excited about where we will be in the next 7 years. Your co-operation is vital to this growth and greater awareness – to make our neighbourhoods safer & better places to live in. Your BB Mobile App code is here. Just scan it with your smart phone and install. Now, you will have a one point access to everything Bandra Buzz, right from your mobile. Wishing you ‘Merry Christmas’ & ‘Happy New Year 2018’. Till next year, take care.

UNWARRANTED FEUDAL TAX

TOI reports State government has stayed obnoxious process to charge 1500% tax hike for converting agricultural land for other use. These are especially to target Catholic Housing Societies & Gymkhanas owned by Catholics in Bandra, Khar & Santa Cruz. Obviously this has irked residents & organisers of establishments that have been in existence for more than half a century. Has the government become greedy all of sudden or has it lost its sense of balance? Is there a touch of Hinduvata to this draconian twist of make hay when the sun shines. Never was there a complaint raised during 60 odd years of Congress rule on such matters. An ex-Revenue Minister in

The good that has come out of it is that those affected by this nonsensical imposition have decided to approach the High Court and tear down the ‘evil designs’

a different government had during his tenure called for the abolition of this tax, not knowing at that time that it would raise its ugly head again in the future. If the government of today has gone bankrupt or is badly in need of money to build statues or run bullet train, this way of fleecing ordinary citizens, is not only improper but one with no character. The CM instead of abolishing this tax, has brought a stay order which again means that after the elections, he will be more stronger to face the opposition & put that practice of imposing this particular tax at his own free will. Is this a government of the people or against a particular community which is non-Hindu. In the first place where is the question of converting agricultural land into non-agricultural land when we live in one of the top metropolitan cities of the world. Are we undertaking agricultural work in this urbanised city. The question of plowing the land in Mumbai vanished after Independence & our government is still bent upon imposing a tax that should have been abolished after Independence. I have lived in this city for more than 70 years, but up till now not seen a single farmer ploughing a field in the city. The British left India in

1947. They should have taught their successors how to impose tax that is rational & meaningful. Do we have to educate our elected representatives, the logic of good governance? Are they that backward in intelligence to initiate a hike of 1500% on a tax propriety that is obsolete & unwarranted. The good that has come out of it is that those affected by this nonsensical imposition have decided to approach the HC & tear down the ‘evil designs’ of greedy politicians masquerading as mantris. All these feudal policies of the ruling party goes to

show how backyard we are in our system of governance. No wonder we celebrate even festivals with loud music with absolutely no regard to people of other faiths & even a HC order. Why is this so? It is to please the voter who are a majority based on caste & religion. The two reforms of demonetisation & GST have been an utter failure, bringing in more misery to the ordinary citizens of this country. You can fool some people some of the time, but not all people all the time. Amar Singh

SPREAD SMILES IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

People always tell me they don’t know where to start or what to do. But I believe the change & everything that could be better in this world begins from within & what’s around us. It begins from our own streets, beaches, gardens & shelters within our neighbourhood. Every year, I bring together people that I know & that they’d know to come together on one weekend of giving, singing & celebrating happiness called The Happy Weekend & we get together to support shelters & institutes across Mumbai by donating requirements & organizing fun activities that would help spread joy to their lonesome hearts. Sometimes time is the best gift that

one could give along with a helping hand. And this Christmas season I invite you, to open the doors of your homes & hearts & spread the cheer of joy in your own backyard. ment & gardening located near Supari Talao are just some of the good doers spread across our own little town of Bandra. It takes just a phone call or a few minutes to take some time out to visit these centers, meet & encourage those that make Bandra proud and take care of those in need. Each shelter or orphanage has a list of monthly requirements like dal, rice, toothbrushes that can be contribute towards as a community or one can just drop by once a week like you would at a friends house to say Hi, that would make the shelter feel like a bigger part of our community. Our beaches, strays, trees & shelters should be treated like ours & as integral

part of our community like our gymkhanas, café’s & bakerys that we are so proud of. If we as Bandra come together to take care of our shelters & surroundings then we or they would never be dependent on donors or NGO’s to make time to send volunteers to help them. They would have us to help them & be there for them in their time of need. And if each community did their part like we would, we would spread joy and warmth to all those in need this Christmas. But they say its never too late to light a candle and spread some light. Is Bandra ready to spread the light and lead the way? I’m sure we are. Alvin Anthony

St. Andrews College Hospitality Division inaugurated Training Restaurant-cum-Banquet Hall St. Andrews College Hospitality Division, Bandra West recently inaugurated its training restaurant-cum-banquet hall on 9th December 2017. This latest addition to the Department of Hospitality wing is a proud moment for the college. This initiative, led by Fr. Magi Murzello (Rector) and Mr. Randolph Joseph (course co-ordinator) is to help and benefit the students of the college. The training restaurant will give the students a familiar space to train in, before they head out into the industry. Encouraging Entrepreneurship: The banquet hall can hold functions of up to 250 people and will be rented out to the community; to use for events, over the weekends. The purpose here is to also engage, financially challenged students into the Food and Beverage space and give them a chance to earn some pocket money, as well as tune their entrepreneurship abilities. Aside from the Restaurant-cum-Banquet hall, there is a dedicated demo space for guest Chefs and culinary entrepreneurs; to come and host workshops at the college.

lution we have seen. The college will also encourage students and people from these communities to hold art and photography exhibitions, book readings, monthly bazaars, so that this becomes a cultural hub in Bandra. Internship Initiative: On the education front Fr. Magi is making it possible for the Hospitality section to blossom by creating new culinary courses and workshops that will benefit the community and also students from a lower income bracket by instituting an internship program.

Cultural Hub: The college is also transforming its corridor space into an art exhibition space and a museum dedicated to the East Indian, Koli, Goan and Mangalorean communites. It is encouraging the community to give the college old objects of cultural heritage, which may be lying forgotten in some corner of your home.

Not only will these pieces of family and community history be displayed in the museum, they will also be cared for and maintained - for the sake of preserving our culture for posterity. The museum will also engage students in its development, in order to inculcate a spirit of pride for their own community and value the evo-

Experiencing the inauguration first hand, when around 50 French students came and enjoyed some local delicacies & music, while interacting with Chef Michael Swamy and others – it was a delightful afternoon where culture, talent & business blended very well. Our hope is that this initiative grows in leaps and bounds, to empower entrepreneurs in the Food & Beverage industry – so that they can rise to new heights. Mugdha Savkar

TRAVEL

A Journey through Mongolia Mongolia – the name brings to mind the ‘Great Mongol Empire’ – the worlds’ largest contagious land empire in history founded by ‘Chinggis Khaan’ in the 13th century. I stayed in Mongolia for 5 days as part of a larger ‘Trans-Siberian’ trip that took me across Russia and China too. In Mongolia, I decided to divide my time between the important historical and cultural landmarks of ‘Ulaanbaatar’ (the capital city where nearly half the country’s 30 lakh population resides) and the ‘hinterland’ or ‘countryside’ to experience the ‘real Mongolia’. Within the city, most of the famous sights are located around the ‘Sükhbaatar Square’ which is in front of the Parliament building. The ‘National Museum of Mongolia’ – a must see - traces the county’s origins from pre-history to the post-communist era that begun in 1992. My trip to Mongolia would have been incomplete without experiencing the traditional Mongolian music and dance performance at the ‘Tumen Ekh Ensemble’- a cultural landmark in the city. ‘Throat singing’ – a performance unique to Mongolia was the highlight of this show. Located a few kilometres away from the city lies the ‘Chinggis Khaan Equestrian statue’, where according to legend, he found the ‘Golden whip’. The statue symbolically faces east towards his birthplace. On the third day, I made my way to ‘Kharkhorin/Karakorum’, (the ancient capital of the Mongol empire) by a public bus from Ulaanbaatar. Kharkhorin today is a small town of around 9,000 people. It is part of the world heritage site of the ‘Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape’. The ‘Erdene Zuu Monastery’ - the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia and the 13th century ruins of the city bear witness to the Mongolia of yore. However the highlight of my ‘Mongolian experience’ was my stay in the ‘Ger’ or ‘Yurt’

Chinggis Khaan (Founder-Mongol Empire)

– a small white circular tent-like-house that has been the dwelling place for Mongols over millennia. Even today, around twothirds of the residents stay in gers. A large proportion of them are still nomads. They move their gers, animals and all their belongings four times a year – every summer, autumn, winter and spring. In the countryside, one can set up their ger on open land, build wooden fences for their cattle and call it home. The nomads still use horses to get from one place to another. However, a few have carts, carriages and even bikes. I was fortunate to stay in a ger with a nomadic family of four for two nights. Their ger was set on open land surrounded by mountains on all sides with no other humans in sight. Their only companions were sheep, cows, goats and horses by the thousands. There are more of each of these animals than human beings in Mongolia. I was treated to their traditional food (sheep meat and milk-based dishes), cut wood for fire, went horse-riding with them and experienced their daily life. They had recently bought a small tempo which makes it easy for them to shift their gers every season. Their small dwelling place is lit every evening with energy from a solar panel which is fitted outside the ger. Inside, there is a fireplace with a chimney at the centre where logs of wood are burnt to keep the room warm. A TV (with a dish antenna set on the open field for signals) is their new source of news and modern entertainment. They collect water from a river nearby. Answering natures call is always done in the open. The family had set up two additional gers at the side of their main one to host their relatives, friends or any travellers that pass by. In Mongolia, it is normal for anyone to enter a ger they spot while travelling - and be treated to food, water and a bed. Even if the occupants of the ger are not present, one can enter and help themselves. This is the unwritten rule of the nomadic lifestyle that is still prevalent all over the country. On my way back from the countryside, I didn’t miss the opportunity to ride a double-humped camel (or ‘Bactrian camel’ that is found only in the steeps of Central Asia) in a small desert known as ‘Elsen Tasarkhai’ (or mini Gobi) that we had to pass through. Mongolia is a tough country to travel given the infrastructure limitations, mud roads in most places, hostile climate (temperatures plunge below -40° in many places during winter). However it is an exciting country to witness the way people would live back in the days. Five days proved insufficient to see everything and I wish I hadn’t underestimated this small country that is sandwiched between the giants of Russia and China. But I do hope to go there again and experience the nomadic life in the desert of the Gobi! Binoy Lobo
