H-West Ward AMC Sharad Ughade encourages Citizens Waste Management Initiatives
It was a sight to see, motivated citizens from kids to teenagers to middle-age & even senior citizens wanting to learn more about composting, waste segregation & eco-friendly issues. Even sweepers were highly motivated to be heroes & heroines in their own way, as a senior society member told us, “We spread dirt, they spread cleanliness”. They responded promptly, saying,“We will co-operate fully.” – even as they were recognised and presented a red rose for their dedication, in the presence of H-West Ward Assistant Municipal Commisioner (AMC) Sharad Ughade & his team, who took time out from his busy schedule (even on a Sunday morning) to attend the inauguration of waste management initiatives taken by several societies of Bandra Reclamation. They are working along with an NGO Stree Mukti Sanghatana – and co-operating with the waste management
department of BMC H-West Ward. Bandra generates more than 350 metric tons of waste per day – making it one of the highest per capita garbage generators. Then, Christopher Pereira from D-ERT, gave a live demo & explained how the tumbler drums work to create compost from waste, for growing bigger & better plants. BMC officials gave the crowd gathered further info how to be a model society that is eco-friendly. Jyoti Mhapsekar, an active member, told us that this initiative was catching up, with awareness sessions across Bandra Reclamation & beyond – and is part of the CSR activity of Bajaj Electricals for the past 16 years. Social Activist Vidya Vaidya, member of BRAVO (Bandra Reclamation Area Volunteers Organization) told us, “We are very grateful to our AMC, Sharad Ughade. Without him we would not have been able to get
this project going – something that was in the pipeline for around ten years. We had meetings in the past, but nothing moved.

Bassein Catholic Co-op Bank inaugurates Bandra branch – celebrates centenary 54th Branch | Half Million Customers | Founders originally from Bandra Bassein Catholic Co-operative Bank Ltd. BMC contractor blames vehicular traffic for St. Paul Road repairs – now in sixth-month! Being an important link road from Hill Road to Perry Road, St. Paul Road has been in the eye of the storm. With work for upgrading the drains starting around November 2016, the road repairs seem endless. Many spots resemble rural areas, with rubble and dust flying all around. The chances of being fatally hit by a vehicle or getting a twisted ankle are the highest here. Alternatively, you may just slip and fall in a pit; with multiple fractures. To enter several buildings, you need to ‘cross the bridge’ – a narrow rickety wooden plank, that puts you into a circus act (it is not so funny for senior citizens). At every corner, a disaster awaits you. Bandra Buzz confronted the BMC Contractor on the job, demanding the reason for the long delay in road repairs. Replying promptly, we were told, “The continuous traffic hinders our flow of work – and the safety of our workers. If the traffic were diverted from Dominic Road through D’Monte Park Road – and then later from St. Joseph Road to Chimbai – our work will be done in less than 10 days.” St. Paul Road ALM 102 has been interacting with the
Traffic Police to approve temporary changes in the traffic, so that the repair work speeds up. Decisions need to be taken & implemented soon. Local resident Janelle was very outspoken. She told us, “With
the upcoming monsoon, any further delay will create confusing scenes and add to worsening of the areas safety factor. Whatever needs to be done, should be done on a war footing.”
Co-ordination by concerned authorities is vital in this case – and no stone should be left unturned to get the work done correctly and ASAP. Laxmi Kulkarni

On 4th April 2017, an audience of around 600 people were enlightened at the St. Andrew’s Auditorium, Bandra; when four financial experts spoke on the current fiscal situation and how one should react to make the most of it. The Management & Staff of Citizen Credit Co-op. Bank Ltd., a scheduled Multi-State Bank (total 42 branches) having three branches and their Head Office in Bandra West; did an excellent job of organizing this event.
The four speakers were authorities in their own subjects. This showed when they answered queries from the audience without any hesitation. Blaise Fernandes SVP, Edelweiss Finance, BOD, Gateway House; started with ‘NDA 2 – Half Time’ – giving insights into the political scenario and its implications on all of us. Frank D’Souza, Partner at PriceWaterHouse Coopers; presented ‘A Look Into The Budget’ – with a lot of informative data that made sense to
those in love with ‘figures’. Anthony Heredia, CEO at Baroda Pioneer Asset Management showed us the way about ‘Investing in Today’s Times’ – a topic that interested senior citizens. Arvind Pinto, former IT Chief Commissioner, explained how ‘Tax Is Not Terrifying’ – by demystifying the changes in the new financial year from 1st April 2017 to 31st March 2018. There were some intelligent questions put across to the speakers & each one answered well.
Ad Guru Roger Pereira hosted the event in his usual professional manner, with time management given top priority – starting and ending on time. It was indeed a morning well spent. The audience left around 2pm with a complimentary lunch box and empowered to face their financial future, with a bank that is committed to prosperity for all.

Iconic Dr. Gokhale of Hill Road fame The Living Practitioner of the Hypocrite Oath – Altruism & Humanism My family moved from SoBo to Bandra in 1964. Our next door neighbours turned out to be a medical practitioner by name Dr. Shrikant Govind Gokhale. It was only later that we learnt that he was the famous Dr. Gokhale of Hill Road fame. His mother and mine became the best of friends, though one was veggie & the other non-veggie, we were never short of food. Also, in 1964 Dr. Gokhale had one of the rare phones which we took advantage of during emergencies. Naturally Dr. Gokhale, his wife Dr. Saral and now his daughter-in-law Dr. Priya have been our general practitioners ever since. Dr. Gokhale’s son Dr. Neeraj has become a heart-specialist in his own right, but none of us has yet had need for his medical advice. Subsequently Dr. Gokhale and family moved to a bigger accommodation on Perry Road, but he has still maintained the next-door-flat, and is always available. Being a medical practitioner in those days was a struggle. Born in December 1933 in Poona, Dr. Gokhale completed his MBBS at the B J Medical College, specialising in children’s health. On 1.7.1958 he travelled to Nasik with Rs. 50/- in his pocket to seek his fortune. Fate & faith brought him to Bandra in 1960, where he set up his practise at the dispensary on Hill Road on Leave & License @ 150/- rent and a deposit of Rs 450/. In those days, Dr. Gokhale remembers only the bread man, the milkman and
Dr. Gokhale trudged along with their bags on Hill Road. His establishment in Bandra he credits to Fay Sequeira – wife of Michael Ferreira, who spread the word about Dr. Gokhale’s ‘healing touch’ and his Christian clientele increased. Unfortunately these caused rumours to spread that he may marry a Christian girl. So no proposals, until Dr. Saral came along, a fresher from Nagpur, whose brother met with Dr. Gokhale. Both had fathers who were no more and there was a mutual admiration for their successes. During that time Dr. Gokhale bought a clinic in Khar-Danda and he met Dr. Saral on 23.5.1963 and she got a medical job in INS Ashwini, Colaba. The rest is part of Bandra’s history. Spurred on, Dr. Gokhale bought a flat in St. Peter’s Colony as the builder Everest Mascarenhas liked Dr. Gokhale’s fried chicken @ Rs. 40/- a square foot + GOI loan of 50%, the purchase got feasible. Soon success followed success, as he got appointments to various corporate companies as their Medical Doctor. On the way, while he treated patients, often for
free, he also treated celebrities like Dilip Kumar for 48 years, Gulzar for 40 years & Rakhee for 46 years. He was a physician to Rajesh Khanna till his demise. Very sadly Dr. Gokhale remembers trying to convince Rajesh Khanna to cut down on his addictions, and the actor told Dr. Gokhale “I lived like a prince; I’ll die like a King.” The others included Sadhana, Jackie Shroff, Naushad, Ramdas Naik, Baba Siddiqui, Baburao Patel of Mother India fame, and even yours truly Jude H. Gomes. Dr. Gokhale in his charitable fortitude does not charge known watchmen. He did not charge for death certificates, no false certificates and after 9pm, it was “Happy Hours”, if they pay or don’t pay. Dr. Gokhale is the living practitioner of the Hypocrite Oath, of altruism & of humanism. Today, being a great old-fashioned GP as the Gokhales are - is the least lucrative field. How many new GPs have started practises in Bandra? People prefer going to a doctor who offers good seating, AC, parking. GPs face what happened to ‘Mulchand’ (was next to Cheap Jack) and the
other kirana stores, after the public started going to the supermarket. That’s how we land up paying through our wallets, as GPs are no more the first family point person - but we land up at gynaecologists, cardiologists or gastroenterologists. Dr. Gokhale believes that, “90 percent of the time, you will know what is wrong with the patient after a good history, and 90 percent of the other 10 percent of the time, you should know what is wrong with them, after you do a good physical examination. So only 10 percent of 10 percent of the time should you need a test or study to give you the answer.” In short, Dr. Gokhale taught me to think like a physician, and to act like a healer. The reason I share this story with you is threefold. First, I want to celebrate a mentor and family friend of mine of 55 years standing. Second, Dr Gokhale’s smile, when he approaches the patient is half the cure. And finally, about how to be human, humble, humorous while being a physician. Thanks for indulging me in this reflection. And whether you know him or not, please join me in “Congratulating” him for all that he has done for the people of Bandra and his legendary legacy. I pride in being his neighbour! Bandra needs 40 years of the “Ban Close to 40 years ago, on New Year’s Day 1978, Bandra was the setting for one of the worst tragedies until that time. The sad event has, unfortunately and rather surprisingly, been erased from the memories of most ‘Bandraites’. Of course, the younger generation has never even heard about it. Yet, this happened a mere 3 Kms (1.9 miles) off the coast of Bandra, close to what is now the Bandstand Promenade. Preamble On January 1st, 1978, Air India flight AI855 was scheduled to fly between Bombay and Dubai, at around 8:00pm. The flight was due to be operated by a Boeing 747 aircraft named “Emperor Ashoka”, registered VT-EBD, the flagship of Air India’s fleet of all jet aircraft. The flight was operated by experienced Air India pilot Capt. Madan Lal Kukar, and Capt. Indu Virmani, an Indian Air Force veteran. The aircraft also had a flight engineer on board, as variants of the 747 of that time did, Mr. Alfredo Faria. Besides the cockpit crew of 3, the aircraft also carried 20 cabin crew on board. The passenger count on flight AI855 that evening was 190, making it a total of 213 souls on board the “Emperor Ashoka”. The “Emperor Ashoka”, VT-EBD Air India’s first Boeing 747 “Jumbo Jet” was built at the Boeing factory in Seattle, Washington in 1971. She was delivered to Air India in May of that year, received at Santa Cruz by none other than the late great J.R.D. Tata, then Chairman of Air India. As was common with 747s of that era, her upper deck featured no passenger seats, but rather a luxurious lounge for first class passengers, fashioned in typical ‘70s style, with a bar, et all. Indian art murals covered her interior walls of the upper deck lounge, and lower passenger deck. She was a symbol of India’s modernity, the first “Jumbo Jet” to come home. Air India had decided to name their Boeing 747s after Indian emperors, and the first bore the name of perhaps the greatest of them all, Ashoka, the source for our national symbols, the “chakra” and the “three-lion stupa”. The Tragedy At around 8:12pm the aircraft took off from Santa Cruz airport. About 101 seconds later, she had made a steep left bank, and impacted the waters off the coast of Bandra. Seconds into the

My father himself, was on another flight, operating yet another Air India Boeing 747 in some other part of the world. He lost some good friends and co-workers that fateful night. The need to remember In my efforts to mark the upcoming 40th anniversary of this tragedy, I am attempting to have a memorial erected (or perhaps at least have a plaque installed) on Bandstand, honoring the victims of the crash. Late last year, I started off on a crusade to contact politicians and corporations, and so-called social activists, in order to enlist their help for the same. Sadly, I was met by zero response. Perhaps this cause was not important enough to them. Then, I received a call from Asif Zakaria, the only person who cared to respond. Asif was very interested in my project, and promised to help after the elections, should he return to power. To my good fortune, he did. He has extended his full support to build a memorial for this, as he well put it, “noble cause”. I hope that with Asif Zakaria’s help, present and future generations will learn about and remember this tragedy in Bandra. We intend to dedicate it on the 40th anniversary, January 1st 2018. As time passes us by, we tend to forget events. However, we ought to not have some of these erased from the pages of history, especially as it is a part of our local history. So next time you walk down the Bandstand promenade, or drive on BJ Road, do take a moment to look out at the sea, and this time, say a prayer for the 213 souls and the “Emperor Ashoka” that were lost, right there, 40 years ago. PARADISE LOST Dear Reader, Summer sweat starts in April, with the intense heat dehydrating us – unless we compensate this with a lot of fluids. Bandra is blessed with cool winds at three wonderful promenades – one overlooking the Mahim Bay from the Reclamation and the Bandstand & Carter overlooking the Arabian Sea. With an open sky & wide horizon, this God-given majestic beauty of Bandra’s coastline is overwhelming. These comparatively cooler spots have minimum air pollution, that are conducive to good health and are ideal for walking, jogging or just hanging around; enjoying natural fresh air. But, for how long? With the coastal road coming soon, our clear sunset views will be hindered. We will be breathing the toxic exhaust fumes of cars zooming across. Temperatures will rise to new heights. The centuries old Bandra Fort will lose its charm of an outpost. Traffic pouring in and exiting out at entry & exit hubs will add to the noise & pollution. Fisher folks along Chimbai, Danda & beyond will be affected. The thriving mangroves will gradually reduce in size and eventually disappear, leading to shifting patterns in the unique
marine ecology of this area – and more importantly lead to an imminent tsunami on Bandra’s coast, around 2080; resulting in severe flooding and loss of life, with damage to property. With all this information, can we allow this disaster to happen? Unless we realize the consequences of tampering with our natural environment; this so called “development” will reach a situation when a future headline will read: Paradise Lost? Make no mistake, this is a serious issue – and once implemented, because of hidden agendas by the power’s-that-be, cannot be reversed. We need to find other viable solutions like something similar to the ‘Chunnel’ – that goes under the sea bed. Today’s technology creates endless possibilities. We need to tap the best & adapt it to our local situation.

Letters to the Editor POLITICS OF BLUNDER The saga of an MP banned by airlines for inappropriate behavior which came to an end after the civil aviation ministry accepted ‘regrets’ by the lawmaker & revoked the ban imposed by it, means India has touched a new low on morals. In a world of rapid digitalization & demonetisation, we as a country seem to have forgotten how to behave in public, especially our lawmakers. The irony of the whole thing is that in spite of having committed an offence the MP was still unrepentant. His party was defiant mouthing threats of ‘dadagiri’ & in full support of its member. Has this episode opened a new chapter on ‘goondaism’? Knowing very well that going to the police & seeking justice from the courts is a long drawn out process that will make him grounded for an extended stretch of time with a no-win situation, the party was trying to bail out its shamed politician & lawmaker by resorting to seeking full privileges from the Parliament. They forgot or were trying to regain lost honour by skuttling the issue through the assembly house, which legally is not the forum as the crime was committed outside its jurisdiction. The citizens of India should
wake up & book such lawmakers for disorderly conduct. The police though had registered a case were dragging their feet, watching which side the wind was blowing. After all its ‘politics’ the scum of our society where elected representatives feel they can get away with anything. In future this lawmaker & others like him will think twice before boarding a train or a plane. The question further puts into doubt why did the Modi govt buckle under pressure to revoke the ban when it had a tight case. First being it did not want to loose an alliance partner threatening to walk out of the fold, especially when you have more enemies then friends. The object is to stay in power at any cost with all eyes on the next Lok Sabha elections due in 2019. Secondly, the alliance partner would also severe ties at the state level & jeopardise a price catch like Maharashtra which they had never been able to in all these years since independence. Thirdly they scumbed to the threat of no AI flights out of Mumbai & possible damage to property by its alliance partner to the new terminal building.
