Armed cops to ‘manage’ worsening Manila traffic Motorists have nothing to fear… as long as they observe rules: Spokesperson MANILA, Sept 2 (Mabuhay) – The 96 policemen who will be deployed to manage traffic on EDSA will be armed with handguns, a police spokesperson said Wednesday. Superintendent Oliver Tanseco, spokesperson of the Philippine National PoliceHighway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG), explained that the 96 policemen also have anti-crime responsibilities aside from managing traffic. Tanseco, however, said that law-abiding motorists should not be afraid of the armed traffic policemen. “Siguro po ‘pag ikaw ay isang carnapper, ikaw ay matigas ang ulo ay matakot ka po. Pero kung ikaw ay motoristang See ARMED COPS, page 7

US nabs 244 undocumented immigrants in four-day sting Los Angeles, United States | AFP | Tuesday 9/1/2015 – At least 244 people were arrested across southern California in a broad, four-day sweep of immigrants with criminal records staying in the country illegally, US authorities said Monday. The large operation, which ended Thursday, is the most successful of its kind in the region, Immigration and Customs Enforcement said. Most of those detained – 191 – are originally from Mexico, though the others came from 20 other countries, including Ghana, France, Peru and Thailand.

The majority (56 percent) had been previously convicted of serious crimes such as child abuse, drug violations and weapons charges. Four of those arrested were previously deported and had re-entered the country, including a man convicted in 2002 of sexual abuse with force and another who had been previously sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually abusing two children. Arum told the Los Angeles Times on Thursday night that the 36-year-old Pacquiao wants to get on with his political career and run for the Senate in the Philippines. “I believe he’ll take one more fight, then run for the Senate in the Philippines,” Arum told the newspaper in a telephone interview from China. “He could fight twice more, I guess, but it sets up better for him to fight, then run.” Pacquiao lost a unanimous decision to Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas four months ago in a fight that Pacquiao fought See PACQUIAO, page 8

Keeping the love (for Tagalog) alive By Abner Galino

BAYANG Lualhati Flores, a college freshman and only daughter of fellow journalist Nelson Flores, speaks Tagalog like she just stepped out of a plane from Manila. When she speaks English, you’ll know she’s from Texas. That is a great achievement from someone who came to the US when she was still a grade schooler and had to grow up with so few people to converse with in Tagalog. But she has to share the credit with her dad who banned English in their household as soon as they settled here. Migrant children will learn English even without help from the household, Nelson noted. “Kasi ‘yan ang lengguwaheng gagamitin niya araw-araw paglabas niya ng bahay. Imposible na hindi siya matuto,” Nelson explained. See LOVE FOR TAGALOG, page 11
