APEC meet peaceful amid terror fears MANILA, Nov 19 (Mabuhay) – The Philippine National Police has indicated that the country’s hosting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation has been generally peaceful even with the attempts of militant groups to hold protest actions near the APEC venues. In a press briefing on Thursday, PNP Spokesman Wilben Mayor said they have been exercising extreme patience especially with the protest-

ers conducting rallies. “Until now wala po kaming ginawang arrest. Policy nga po ng ating Chief PNP na as much as possible well let the protesters to express their sentiments. Mamahayag po, magsalita sila,” he said. “Hahayaan po ito ng Philippine National Police at Security Task Force but then again ang hiling lang po natin is itigil na po nila ‘yung See PEACEFUL, page 8

Manila police deploy Katy Perry to disperse APEC protesters By Joel Guinto

Manila, Philippines | AFP – Philippine police deployed Katy Perry pop songs to disperse protesters at an Asia-Pacific leaders’ summit on Thursday, enraging some demonstrators but amusing others. Hundreds of left-wing protesters rallied outside a venue where US President Barack Obama and other leaders of the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group were meeting. The rally edged towards violence when protesters tried to break through lines of police, who were carrying riot shields and wooden batons, to reach the summit venue. Police responded by firing water cannons and scuffled with protesters who were chanting: “Junk APEC”. Then police pulled out their secret weapon: pop princess Katy Perry on giant loudspeakers. Perry’s hit song “Roar” was played at full volume, the top of a demonstration disco playlist aimed at distracting the protesters and drowning See KATY PERRY, page 8

‘APEC hotties’ Trudeau and Nieto set Filipino hearts racing Manila, Philippines | AFP – The dashing good looks of Canada’s prime minister and Mexico’s president have sparked the unlikely hashtag “#APEChottie” to go viral at a gathering of world leaders in the Philippines. For much of the last week, Manila’s social media has been filled with angry tirades at the huge traffic disruption caused by security measures for the two-day Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. But in the last day the mood has

improved as Filipinos lose themselves in the dreamy eyes of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Enrique Pena Nieto. Their arrival in the steamy Philippine capital has got tongues wagging and keyboards clicking, with both social and traditional aedia filled with compliments for the pair. For the diplomats, policy wonks and business leaders in Manila, US President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping are the only show in town. See HOTTIES, page 8

Can bankruptcy stop a foreclosure? There has been several articles in the press recently, that suggests we are about to experience a new wave of foreclosures this spring. Banks usually, try to avoid dumping their entire foreclosure portfolio at once, to prevent prices dropping so low, that it encourages even more people to default. Who wants to service a mortgage on a property that is significantly upside down? Personally, I think we are in a longer real estate recession than many realize. A few years ago, many home buyers took advantage of low start rates, hoping their property would appreciate faster than the rise in adjustable loan rates. Unfortunately, this didn’t happen for those on the tail end of the real estate boom. Many of them, unable to qualify for the new HARP2 refinancing, choose to let their properties foreclose, rather than service loans higher than the home is worth. So what happens when you stop paying your mortgage? After a few months in arrears, the mortgage lender starts a foreclosure process. Foreclosure is a legal procedure that involves mortgaged properties. If a homeowner defaults on his or her mortgage, by either failing to make mortgage payments or failing to follow other terms of the mortgage document, foreclosure may be the result. Usually there is a forced sale of the property at public auction; The home owner loses title, and in most cases, it is the mortgage lender who takes possession. The lender will subsequently lists the property for sale through a local real estate broker. The homeowner will face eviction. Bankruptcy is a legal procedure that begins when an individual cannot meet all their financial obligations, and chooses to avail themselves of the protection of the bankruptcy court. For those in foreclosure, a chapter 13 bankruptcy repayment plan may be the answer. You will still have to make your regular mortgage payments on time, but arrears can be amortized over several years. It is a solution for those struggling with both mortgage payments and unsecured debt like credit cards, because the bankruptcy can discharge the unsecured debt, and give you a chance to use that money to save your home. Of course, that is only a good solution if the property is financially worth saving. For those with a second mortgage that is in essence, unsecured by the current real value of the property, the bankruptcy court can

choose to consider this an unsecured debt, and discharge it similarly to credit card debt. That in turn improves the loan to value position on the property. The U.S. Courts’ publication Bankruptcy Basics refers to a Chapter 13 bankruptcy as “an adjustment of debts of an individual with regular income” where the debtor works with the bankruptcy court to develop a repayment plan for the debtor to follow over the next three to five years. Upon completion of the repayment plan, the bankruptcy court will discharge any remaining eligible debts. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy filing can stall or derail foreclosure proceedings. That’s because of bankruptcy’s “automatic stay” provisions that force creditors to the sidelines while the bankruptcy court sorts things out. The lender can petition the court to allow it to continue with the foreclosure, depending on where you are in the foreclosure process, but it should buy you some time. The following, is from page 24 of the U.S. Courts’ publication Bankruptcy Basics: By virtue of the automatic stay, an individual debtor faced with a threatened foreclosure of the mortgage on his or her principal residence can prevent an immediate foreclosure by filing a chapter 13 petition. Chapter 13 then affords the debtor a right to cure defaults on long-term home mortgage debts by bringing the payments current over a reasonable period of time. The debtor is permitted to cure a default with respect to a lien on the debtor’s principal residence up until the completion of a foreclosure sale under state law. 11 U.S.C § 1322©. Clearly, you should hire a bankruptcy attorney to guide you through this complex process. That’s why the Law Offices of Paul M. Allen is here to help you consider the advantages of a re-structuring, through the flexibility of a Chapter 13 plan. For a free consultation, call the Law Offices of Paul M. Allen today at (818) 552-4500 or (818) 334-5545. We have three convenient locations in Southern California: Glendale, Cerritos and La Palma.

Bill to create portable water filters nationwide MANILA, Jan 3 (Mabuhay) -- A lawmaker has filed a bill requiring all provinces and cities throughout the country to acquire portable water filters to ensure potable water supply during disasters. Rep. Angelina “Helen” Tan (4th District, Quezon) said House Bill 3244 aims to provide potable water to communities affected by calamities. “This will ensure the continuous supply of safe drinking water to the victims of calamities and the general public,” said Tan, who is a medical doctor. She noted that undoubtedly, both natural and man-made disasters bring life to a standstill as calamities do not only hamper electricity but also clean drinking water supply, affecting the public with numerous waterborne diseases.

Tan cited the case of many victims of the recent 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Bohol, Cebu province and Siquijor Island in Central Visayas where cases of diarrhea and other waterborne diseases were reported due to the disruption of running water. Many areas that were affected by the killer quake are living without adequate quantities of clean water and sanitation facilities, she added. “Since the country is prone to disasters and hazards, waterborne diseases become prevalent in times of tropical cyclones, earthquakes and social conflicts. Hence, communities across the archipelago need guaranteed access to clean water and sanitation facilities to prevent the spread of diseases,” Tan said.

USDA reports lower turkey costs as Thanksgiving nears Store prices for frozen turkey drops 18 cents/pound from previous week Washington, DC – (Nov 18, 2015) USDA’s latest weekly survey of advertised retail prices for the consumers’ choice of frozen turkey hens dropped 18 cents per pound from the previous week and remained just a penny cheaper per pound than last year in the week before Thanksgiving, as observed by the National Turkey Federation. The official USDA report is the most current authoritative assessment of retail turkey prices, surveying 20,591 retail supermarket outlets through November 19. The USDA National Retail Report on Turkey shows the average price of frozen turkey hens in its survey of grocery stores down from last week’s $1.08 per pound to now 90 cents per pound, which is also just one cent less per pound than last year. The National Turkey Federation also noted that shoppers can also find lower prices at nearly 49 cents per pound in many supermarkets offering discounts for frozen turkey as part of their annual promotions to attract Thanksgiving shoppers. “Promotional discounts for frozen turkey hens are an excellent buy for shoppers, in addition to regular advertised prices,” said Joel Brandenberger, National Turkey Federation president. “The growing and marketing of Thanksgiving turkey is handled specifically to meet the annual demand at Thanksgiving with discount promotions to bring shoppers in for the biggest grocery week of the year.

Mexico’s Nieto says visit to further strengthen PHL-Mexico ties MANILA, Nov 18 (Mabuhay) -- Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said his state visit to the Philippines will further strengthen the already durable ties between the two countries forged by shared history several hundred years ago. In his message Tuesday during a toast to President Aquino, Nieto said the two countries, under Spanish rule, was tied by the Acapulco Galleon trade 450 years ago. The Manila Galleon set sail from the Philippines to the port of Acapulco, in Mexico carrying goods from Asia to the Americas, he said. “This historic commercial route linked our nations and approached our peoples. More than four centuries later, it remains a symbol of shared identity,” Nieto said in his message. In the 20th century, the deep relationship of friendship between the two nations was once again confirmed when Mexico sent the Expeditionary Mexican Air Force, during World War II, reinforcing Filipino troops. Today, more than seven decades after that war, the Philippines and Mexico are united in their commitment to positive transformation,

aimed at elevating the quality of life of their societies, he said. Nieto also recognized the great contribution of the Aquino family to the Philippine democracy noting the struggles of President Aquino’s parents as well as the chief executive himself. The Aquino family fought for liberties and rights of the Filipino people that although not easy, it has borne positive results. “President Aquino, you lead a government that projects to the world an irrevocable commitment to the modernization of the Philippines and the well-being of its people,” Nieto told the President. “I wish to express that you can count on Mexico and the Mexican people support towards that goal.” Mexico recognizes that Asia-Pacific is an essential region in the 21st century and the Philippines is Mexico’s great ally. “With this State Visit, we honor our past; we celebrate our current similarities and we are committed to a better future for Filipinos and Mexicans.” President Aquino hosted a state dinner at the Malacanang Palace Tuesday evening in honor of the visiting Mexican leader. PHL cited for safe APEC summit MANILA, Nov 19 (Mabuhay) -The Philippine National Police (PNP) has attributed the improvement of the country’s ranking at the Global Terrorism Index 2015 to the security measures it has implemented and cooperation with partner government agencies. “We heard about the news and (we) attribute it (to the measure) security cooperation of all the government agencies not only from the Armed Forces of the Philippines but on the whole-government approach,” PNP Spokesperson Chief Supt. Wilben Mayor said during the APEC Security Task Force briefing Thursday.

The Philippines ranked 11th out of 162 countries in terms of the impact of terrorism in the Global Terrorism Index 2015, a tool that analyzes the trends in terrorist activities worldwide. This ranking improved from ninth in 2014 as it saw a decrease in the number of deaths related to terrorism. The country experienced 378 terrorism incidents in 2014 that left 240 persons dead and 367 injured. A total of 529 properties were damaged because of the atrocities. The number of terrorism-related fatalities went down by 18 percent to 240 in 2014 from 291 in 2013. (MNS)

Woman gives birth in APEC traffic chaos M a n i l a , P h i l i p pines | AFP | Wednesday 11/18/2015 – A Filipina gave birth on a Manila sidewalk after getting caught in traffic chaos caused by a regional gathering of world leaders, police said Wednesday. The sprawling Philippine capital is renowned for its daily tailbacks, but the ongoing Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit has taken the city’s congestion to infuriating new heights. Police have shut down key thoroughfares in the metropolis to ensure quick and safe travel for world leaders during the summit, causing gridlock and forcing many commuters to make long walks home. In one incident earlier this week a pregnant woman trapped in traffic went into labour and gave birth with the help of two police officers, Senior Superintendent Wilben Mayor, the national police spokesman said Wednesday. “It was a special situation but the important thing is the baby is alive and they (the officers) were able to perform their duties,” he told a news conference.

Fellow commuter Angel Ramos-Canoy uploaded a picture and an account of the emergency delivery on her Facebook wall that quickly went viral. It showed a policewoman and a second woman in civilian clothes holding a newborn partly wrapped in white cloth, an umbilical cord still attached. Mayor said he did not have details on when or where the incident took place. Local media said the unidentified woman gave birth to a baby boy on Monday morning. In her Facebook post, which can no longer be seen on her wall, Ramos-Canoy wrote how she and other stranded commuters used umbrellas to give the woman some privacy as she gave birth. “All we can do is to give shade through our umbrellas,” she wrote. Mayor said the policewoman who helped deliver the baby was also a midwife, while the male officer was a trained nurse. They summoned an ambulance to take the woman to hospital, but delivered the baby themselves because the emergency vehicle could not get through the traffic jam, he added.

DFA clarifies ‘moratorium’ on Mary Jane execution

MANILA, Nov 19 (Mabuhay) – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday clarified reports on the supposed moratorium on the execution of Mary Jane Veloso, the Filipina convicted in Indonesia for drug smuggling. DFA spokesperson Charles Jose, citing Philippine officials in Jakarta, said the Indonesian government just reiterated its earlier statement that executions are not among its current priorities. “Our embassy in Jakarta clarified that what the Indonesian government said was that executions are not a priority for now,” Jose said. Jose said the Indonesian government’s statement on executions “was a general statement, without specific reference to Mary Jane’s case.” “But of course that’s good news,”

he added. Veloso, who has always maintained her innocence and said human-traffickers duped her, was also due to be executed in April but was granted a last-minute temporary reprieve. The reprieve was given following appeals from the Philippine government, which said Veloso’s testinomy is needed in the case of her alleged recruiters in Nueva Ecija in the Philippines. Jakarta had insisted that her sentence has only been postponed while legal proceedings run their course in the Philippines. Veloso was arrested in April 2010 at the Yogyakarta Airport. She was then convicted for possessing 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her luggage. (MNS)

PNP won’t confirm if Malaysian captive has been murdered MANILA, Nov 19 (Mabuhay) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday said it was not yet sure if the Abu Sayyaf Group has murdered Malaysian captive Bernard Ghen Ted Fen. “Pending official scientific findings, at this point we cannot conclusively establish the identity of these human remains to preclude undue speculation and inaccuracy in reporting,” PNP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor said in a statement. Mayor made the statement after Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Rasak announced that the Malaysian captive had been murdered by his captors. “I, the government, and all Malaysians are shocked and sickened by the murder of our countryman Bernard Then, and we condemn it in its strongest terms,” Najib said in a statement on his Facebook page. “We call upon authorities to take action against those who have perpetrated this savage and barbaric act and ensure that they are brought to justice,” said Najib, who is currently in Manila for an Asia-Pacific summit. Mayor said that the police recovered two remains in separate locations in Sulu – a severed human head placed in a package and left along Marina Street in Barangay Walled City in Jolo town last Tuesday and a headless body in Barangay Kagay, Indanan town on Wednesday.

Mindanao bombing, beheading not related to APEC: AFP MANILA, Nov 18 (Mabuhay) – The military on Wednesday said the beheading of a Malaysian hostage by the Abu Sayyaf in Sulu and the bombing in Davao City have nothing to do with the country’s hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ summit. “Wala po itong kaugnayan sa ating pagho-host,” said Armed Forces spokesman Col. Restituto Padilla Jr. in a press briefing. “Ang nakuha naming initial information ay failure lang po sa negotiation tungkol sa pera at bayaran.” He was referring to the beheading of Bernard Ghen Ted Fen in Indanan, Sulu, on Tuesday, after his family failed to pay the ransom demand of the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group. In a joint statement read by Padilla, the military and the police described the killing of the Malaysian hostage as “inhuman, barbaric and brutal.” “The Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police headquarters have indeed received news of the inhuman, barbaric and brutal incident in the island of Jolo and the bombing in

the city of Davao,” he said. One person was hurt when a bomb explosion hit a passenger van in Davao City on Wednesday morning. “We have commanders on the ground who are now attending to all of these and we will await for their full report,” Padilla said. Padilla also denied that there was a news blackout regarding these incidents, which happened on the day most of the economic leaders arrived in the Philippines for the APEC meeting. “Ang totoo lang po ditong nangyari ay clarification kung ano talaga ang nangyayari sa ground, kaya minarapat po ng ating pamahalaan at ng ating liderato sa headquarters ng PNP at AFP na checkin muna mabuti kung anong nangyayari talaga bago magpahayag,” he said. Padilla assured the public that government security forces are fully capable of addressing any similar incidents that may occur in Metro Manila. “The APEC Security Task Force is fully focused in fulfilling its mandate and regard to our hosting,” he said. SC orders probe of fake notary publics in Quezon City MANILA, Nov 19 (Mabuhay) – The Supreme Court (SC) has ordered the Executive Judge of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) to act on the alleged existence of fake notary publics and illegal practice of law by non-lawyers in the city. In an en banc resolution promulgated by Clerk of Court Atty. Felipa B. Anama, the SC reiterated its order requiring Executive Judge Fernando T. Sagun to look into reports of bogus notary publics, particularly the Padolina Law Office. It can be recalled that the SC in its resolution in April 2014 ordered then Executive Judge Ma. Luisa Padilla to investigate the said law firm, which allegedly continued to notarize documents despite the death of Atty. Jose S. Padolina. “Although a copy of the resolution was received in the office of [Padilla], the Court has not received any report on what action has been taken thereon,” the SC said. Thus, the SC required Sagun to look into the matter and “to explain why no report had been submitted.” In its Sept. 22, 2015 resolution, the SC also told the executive judge “to submit the required report within thirty (30) days from notice of the Court’s resolution.” The order came after Pedro Suarez of Quezon City sent two letters to the SC in 2011 relative to the alleged existence of fake notary publics in the city. Gov. Brown leads unveiling of Bicycle Hotel and Casino in Bell Gardens

California Governor Jerry Brown & Hashem Minaiy, Managing General Partner & CEO of The Bicycle Hotel & Casino.

By Abner Galino

CALIFORNIA Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday led the unveiling of the Bicycle Hotel and Casino in the City of Bell Gardens which has been infused with fresh capital to convert it into a fabulous place for events and relaxation rather than just a place to gamble. The seven-storey, 99-room Bicycle Hotel and Casino will open its doors on December 1 with its 185 tables of poker and other card games still intact but offering more to clients. It will have an outdoor pool deck with private cabanas, a spa and sauna, a fitness center and 9,000 square feet of space for conventions and banquets. Its restaurant, the Bike Brewery, will feature 28 beer taps that includes a blonde ale created just for the hotel clientele. “It is important to realize that the economy and the production of jobs come from many different ways, not

just from economic plans from the government or from the city, its taking up from people – people putting up their money and the money they can borrow and putting it at risks for having a vision or something,” Gov. Brown said during a brief speech before ceremonial cutting of the ribbon. The California governor took the opportunity to belie perceptions that Texas was “having all the jobs.” “It’s not true. California is now producing jobs faster than the nation as a whole,” Brown claimed. Before the California governor arrived, tension momentarily gripped the area when a group of protesters picketed in front of the hotel. The group carried placards and an effigy of Gov. Brown. Weekend Balita learned that the picket had nothing to do with the opening of the hotel and casino but on a long-standing community issue regarding a closed down factory that left pollutants in the neighborhood. The picketers were demanding action from governor, who they claimed, did not do enough to address the problem. Weekend Balita was not able to get Brown’s reaction on the issue as the governor quickly left after the ceremonies. City of Bell Gardens Mayor Jennifer Rodriguez and Assemblymember Cristina Garcia led the group of local officials and the hundreds of guests from the community who joined the unveiling event. The Bell Gardens Honor Guard started the ceremony through the customary presentation of colors. It was later followed by a grand entrance of motorcycles driven by tuxedo dressed bikers. Each of these bikers had beautiful backrider models who were dressed in sequin gowns. The bikes converged in front of the stage and the models displayed oversized playing cards that spelled the word: Bicycle. The Bicycle Hotel and Casino said the new hotel was built by the R.D Olson Construction through the architecture by Lee & Sakahara and interior design layouts by Hager Design International. The hotel takes pride in its plush king and queen-size beds that are complemented by “California-inspired furnishing and lavish bath amenities.” In their website, the Bicycle Hotel and Casino says that for guests seeking “premium accommodations, 29 luxury suites will range from the Classic Suite (648 sq. ft.), the signature Bike Suite (904 sq. ft.), the extravagantly curated Governor’s Suite (1,359 sq. ft.), and a Presidential Suite (2,007 sq. ft.) fashioned to host and impress with its two bedrooms, formal living room, and See BICYCLE CASINO, page 7

The U Visa: Assistance to Victims of Certain Crimes When a serious crime has been committed, justice can only be served when the perpetrator of the crime is successfully prosecuted and jailed. Unfortunately, justice is often not served when the victim of the crime is an undocumented immigrant. This has been the case as many fear that may suffer because of their unlawful immigration status should they seek help from the police In an effort to combat this fear and rightly redress victims of crimes, Congress passed the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Prevention Act of 2000. This Act created the U Visa, which confers legal, nonimmigrant status to an individual of certain serious crimes. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) began issuing U visas in 2008. Every year since then, the maximum number of U visas that can be issued each year, which is 10,000, has been granted. To be eligible for a U visa, a noncitizen applicant must provide evidence establishing the following requirements: (1) the individual, or a qualifying relative, must have suffered substantial physical or mental abuse due to a qualifying criminal activity; (2) the victim has information concerning the criminal activity; (3) the victim has been helpful, is being helpful, or is likely to be helpful to law enforcement officials in investigating or prosecuting the criminal activity; and (4) the crime violated US laws or occurred within the US. U visas are available to those residing both within the US and those who may have already departed the US, whether voluntarily or under an order of removal. The types of criminal activities that qualify a victim for a U visa are

numerous. There is no exhaustive list of offenses, but rather they are defined by various federal, state and local criminal laws. Examples of qualifying criminal activities include domestic violence, child abuse, rape, sexual abuse, abduction, involuntary servitude, torture, murder, witness tampering, obstruction of justice, perjury, kidnapping, prostitution, trafficking, false imprisonment, blackmail, and extortion. In the domestic violence context, it is worthwhile to note that it includes offenses between non-married couples. As well, the immigration status of the criminal perpetrator is irrelevant, so it includes offenses committed by one undocumented individual to An individual who has been the victim of criminal activity may obtain a U visa, which confers legal status in the US and a work permit valid for a period of 4 years. If the victim is under the age of 21, then his/her parents, spouse, children, and unmarried siblings under age 18 are also eligible for a U visa. If the victim is age 21 or older, then the victim’s spouse and children may obtain a U visa as well. Individuals granted a U visa may thereafter apply for permanent residency upon fulfilling the following: (1) be a U nonimmigrant; (2) be physically present in the US continuously for at least 3 years as a U nonimmigrant; and (3) he/she has not

unreasonably refused to provide assistance to law enforcement officials prosecuting the criminal activity underlying the U Visa. In addition, the immigration service will use its discretion when evaluating applications to determine if the applicant should be accorded permanent resident status to the US. The immigration will balance any negative factors, such as a criminal record, fraud, or immigration violation, against any positive factors, such as family ties, hardship, or length of residence in the US, to determine whether an individual should be granted permanent residency. The U visa empowers a victim of a serious crime to not only ensure that justice against the criminal perpetrator is obtained, but also to secure justice for himself/herself as a victim deserving of an opportunity

in the United States. Given the legal complexities involved, individuals burdened by such a traumatic experience as being a victim of a serious crime should consult with a qualified immigration attorney to ensure that the rights and privileges afforded under the law are applied fairly and justly. This is truly a dream realized and we look forward to welcoming our first guest in just a few short weeks on Dec. 1,” explains Managing General Partner & CEO Hashem Minaiy. “Hashem and I set out to not only build a beautiful hotel for our guests, but a great property that can be shared with and enjoyed by everyone in the community. Having the Governor, city officials and all of our guests here to see the hotel

for the first time made this a most memorable day,” adds Robert H. Carter, president of Carter Management Group. The $50-million hotel has been under construction since 2013 on a land previously used for parking. The Bicycle Casino has had a long and colorful history in Bell Gardens. The federal government took over part ownership of the casino in 1991 after a jury found that $12 million of the $22 million used in its construction came from Florida drug smugglers. Five years later, the federal government sold its share of the casino to a large British gambling company. The casino is now privately owned by the Bicycle Hotel & Casino LLC.

Nov. 22 concert to honor memory of slain journalists LOS ANGELES – Filipino-American media groups here have banded together to honor the memory of the 32 journalists killed in the Ampatuan massacre, the worst single attack on the press. On Nov. 22, members of the media will hold a concert and photo exhibit at the Celebrity Centre International in Los Angeles. The event will feature Original Pilipino Music (OPM) icon Florante, local celebrity musicians and the newly formed Fil-Am Media Band. The concert, titled ABAKADA: Children Helping Children, will also highlight the youth band Back2Jupiter, who will dedicate their performances to the orphans of the slain journalists. “ABAKADA is the title of Florante’s popular song promoting the value of education,” said Benny Uy, public relations officer of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP)-US Chapter, producer of the show. “It’s also a fitting title because this project will help us support the education of the orphans of slain journalists.” The concert date – Nov.22 – which

is Nov. 23 in Philippine time zone, marks the sixth year after the attack that claimed the lives of 58 people, 32 of them journalists, in Ampatuan town, Maguindanao province in Southern Philippines. None of the suspects have been convicted of the crime. International media groups, including the New York-based watchdog Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), have condemned the slow progress of the case and the continued killing of journalists in the Philippines. Earlier this month, radio broadcaster Jose Bernardo was shot dead by still unidentified assailants in Quezon City. He is the 5th journalist killed in 2015 and the 169th since 1986, according to NUJP. NUJP-US is producing the event, in partnership with the Filipino American Press Club of California, F7 Photographers, Frontliners, Philippine Press Photographers (PPP)USA and Pen and Lens Press Club. The show is sponsored by Estela Cottle of Estela Skin Care Clinic and former journalist Nancy Ramos Esguerra of SANA Care Services.

Not so for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, which put the Mexican and Canadian leaders on its front page and asked readers: “Are you with Team Nieto or Team Trudeau?” Many Filipinos flocked to social media to declare which kind of political eye candy they preferred. “Not sure if Canadian prime minister or Disney prince” wrote @imjesstorres on Twitter, adding the hashtags #APECHottie and #PrinceEricIsReal. For @jochendria it was Nieto who

came out on top. “Trudeau and Nieto. Hmmm... I choose the latter. #APECHottie”. “I’m sorry but he’s too attractive,” posted @anndiazpiquero, who used more than just words to express her admiration for Nieto – adding an emoji face with two hearts for eyes. Facebook user Santi Galasi summed up the APECHottie phenomenon as follows: “An example of that wonderful Filipino trait where, despite being screwed over by circumstances, we find a reason to be happy.”

out their chants. Dolly Parton’s “Islands in the stream”, David Guetta’s “Sexy bitch” and the Bee Gee’s “How deep is your love” were among the other songs deployed against the protesters. To add a street bass beat, some of the police tapped their batons against their shields in time with the music. “It’s ridiculous,” leftist member of parliament Carlos Isagani Zarate

told AFP, as the protesters retreated to soul classic “My Girl”. Many other protesters also expressed anger at authorities trying to suppress their message of opposition to globalization and free-trade policies championed by APEC. “We just want to make our voices heard,” 64-year-old mango farmer Candelario Rusasena told AFP. But others could not hide their amusement.

violence na ginagawa at ginawa nila kaninag umaga,” he added. Mayor was referring to the protest action at Buendia Avenue where the police force and protesters figured in a street clash. “As of this moment mayroong nga tayong nakitang nagrarally sa areas na nabanggit kanina. We will implement maximum tolerance,” he said. “Again we are calling on the leaders to please observe the law. We

have been reminding them of the no permit no rally policy,” he added. Mayor also called on protesters to self-disperse to prevent further altercations and violation of the law. “Walang permit na binigay ang local government units sa areas kung saan may APEC. So therefore, their presence in that particular area is already unauthorized and in violation of the law,” he said.

Thankful for each moment we’re privileged to have in this challenging world This harvest season, as we celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26th, we are reminded of the “happy feast” between the Pilgrims and the Indians, according to some stories which apparently happened only “once.” The background story on Thanksgiving, according to author Susan Bates, “began in 1614 when a band of English explorers sailed home to England with a ship full of Pawtuxet Indians bound for slavery. They left behind diseases such as smallpox which virtually wiped out those who had escaped. And, by the time the Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts Bay, they found only one living Pawtuxet Indian, named Squanto who had survived slavery in England, and

understood their language. Knowledgeable as he was, Squanto taught them how to grow corn and fish, and he negotiated a peace treaty between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Nation. Thus, at the end of their first year, the Pilgrims held a great feast, honoring Squanto and the Wampanoags.” However, as the word spread out in England in the “new world,” religious zealots called “Puritans,” began arriving by the bus

load and finding no fences around the land they considered a public domain. So, they seized land, capturing young natives for slavery and killing the rest of the Pequot tribe. In 1637, near present day Groton, Connecticut, over 700 men, women and children of the Pequot Tribe had gathered for their annual Green Corn Festival to celebrate Thanksgiving, but they were all murdered by the English and Dutch mercenaries. So, the following day, the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony declared a “day of Thanksgiving,” for their victory over the Pequot Tribe. Though this grizzly story didn’t play out with the more peaceful feast where the Pilgrims and the Indians sat together in celebration, we still

need to accept that it was part of the history of Thanksgiving until Abraham Lincoln declared “Thanksgiving Day” as a legal national holiday during the Civil War years. As Christians, we celebrate “Thanksgiving” not only to give thanks to our loved ones or those who have been kind and generous to us, but to thank Him for making each moment we’re privileged to have in this challenging world. As meaningful and significant, we also need to pray for those who have health challenges and extend our compassion and respect to the rest of our underprivileged fellowmen. Here’s wishing you dear readers a bountiful and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Get FHA 30 yrs fixed rate as low as 3.5% (APR 3.76%) with no points Question Answered: Majority of the buyers now are going with FHA Loans, so I thought of answering and informing you of such questions and answers so you would fully understand how to go with this minimum down payment loan. Q: 580 + Fico, OK A: With automated underwriting approval and no 30 day later payments on any accounts in the past 12 months and 3 compensating factors, strict 31/43 Debt to Income ratio. Q: Chapter 7 BK, what’s the timeframe needed before they are eligible for FHA Mortgage? Chapter 13 Bankruptcy There must be 12 consecutive months of on time payments on all accounts (including utilities, cell phones etc) from the filing of the chapter 13 bankruptcy. Chapter 7 Bankruptcy There must be 24 months of perfect credit from the disposition of a Chapter 7

bankruptcy. Foreclosure There must be 3 years of perfect credit from the foreclosure. Q: Can you do a cash-out refinance to pay off the remaining balance of BK 13? A: Yes, you can cash out up to 85% of the appraised value. Assuming there has been no late payments on the BK or the mortgage. Q: If you have an open tax lien and are currently in a payment plan with the IRS, do you have to pay it off at or prior to closing an FHA loan? A: No, the IRS can subordinate

their lien to the new mortgage and they do routinely do so. (Mostly on purchase loans) Q: What’s the maximum number of months left on an installment loan that allow the lender to not include this to your debt to income calculation? A: 10 months. Installment loans are car loans or student loans. However, this does not apply to leased vehicles. Q: Do you have to pay off collections and charged off accounts prior to closing? A: No, FHA does not require it. However, if it’s a Judgement it most probably will need to be paid prior to closing. Q: When do you need to build alternative credit? A: When the borrowers do not have 3 open active trades for 12 months in the report. Q: How is alternative credit built and evaluated? A: Document 12 months of good payment history on rents, utility bills, cell phone, furniture rental, car or insurances, etc. Q: How long does a student loan need to be deferred for you to leave it out of the debt to income ratio calculation? A: 12 months from the expected closing date. Q: Can you use Child Support income? A: Yes, As long as the borrower will be receiving this child support for the next three years verified by court papers. Q: What income documentation is required for a self-employed borrower? A: 2 years of 1040’s and a current YTD Profit and Loss statement. The

P&L does not need to be audited unless required by the underwriter. If there is a declining income factor, the underwriter will only average out the recent 12 months of income. Q: If someone has recently returned to the work force after an extended absence ( possibly even for a year… for example: a woman returning to work after have a child and have decided to stay home for a year) do they need to wait for 2 years to re-establish an employment history? A: No, if they are back to work for a minimum of 6 months and can document, prior to leaving the work force, that they had a complete 2 year full time history, the income will be used. Q: Does FHA allow Stated Income Documentation? A: No, there are only local Banks that will allow self employed borrowers to apply for a stated income program; minimum down payment should be around 40%. Q: Who will you call for your next FHA or Conventional loan scenario? A: Ken Go at 562-508-7048 or write to kennethgo@verizon.net I strongly believe that everything is so far going as planned, this is a buyers market and sellers should not be afraid to start to consider moving up by next year. As long as you have your jobs now and are able to pay your mortgages, hang in there. Keep your fingers crossed, if there were no more major bad news to come by year end. What to do before debt problems ruin your life Are you facing a mountain of debt and don’t know what to do in order to avoid getting buried? Debt problems can wreak havoc on your personal life in many ways. And left unsolved, they can spill over into other areas of your life, causing problems not only at home but maybe even at work or in your business, if you are self-employed. If you are struggling every month to make even minimum payments on your debts, maybe you know what I am talking about. Maybe you’ve been trying hard to break free from the vicious cycle of debt but you just don’t know where to start in finding a way out. Some people are trapped in an endless pattern of borrowing. They want to stop but they just don’t know how. These are the people who are already buried in debt as it is and yet they continue to borrow every month just to pay other debts. It seems to work for a little while and then sooner or later, they find themselves maxed out with no other choice but to file bankruptcy. Can you still avoid this situation or is it too late? Every day, I see a lot of people who don’t even know how much they owe anymore. At some point, they knew that their debts have spun out of control so they just stopped keeping track of them. When was the last time you reviewed your credit card statements to see how much you owe, how much interest you are paying and how long it will take you to pay off what you’ve borrowed? If you haven’t done this in a while, I suggest that you take the time to do it in order to find out exactly where you are. This may be an intimidating process to some people. Others simply don’t want to know because they are in denial about how serious their debt problems are. They are afraid to know and have to face the reality of their debts. What will it take for you to take action and do something to turn your situation around before things get worse? In order to reduce the burden of debt in your life, you will need to conquer your fears and develop a strategy to get out of debt. Maybe you

need to cut your spending and learn how to live on a budget. Perhaps you need to give up a few things in your life no matter how much you want to have or keep them. To get out of debt, you need to make several commitments to yourself. One of them is being able to stick to a budget that allows you to live within your financial means. The goal is to spend less than you earn so that you can accelerate the process of getting out of debt by sending more than the minimum amount required to your creditors every month. Learn how to make better choices with your money and slash as many unnecessary expenses as you can. Stop using your credit cards except for emergencies. Avoid the temptation of purchasing anything on credit. If you can’t afford to pay cash for something that you want to buy, that means you can’t afford it, period. If you need to get your financial house in order, we can help you evaluate your options. Some people are simply beyond help with their debts that unless they file bankruptcy to either wipe out their debts or at least consolidate them into an affordable monthly payment, they have no other way out. If you think this describes you, it would help to talk to a professional who can help you explore your legal options. For a free consultation, call Toll-Free 1-866-477-7772. Can a divorcing couple agree to pay for their adult children’s college expenses in their divorce judgment? Divorcing couples with children sometimes worry about who is going to pay for their children’s college education after the divorce once their children graduates high school. They want a guarantee that their soon to be ex-spouse will share in the college expenses of their children. This is specially the case when the other spouse has moved on with a new family. The old family becomes less of a priority. In California, there is no legal basis for a spouse to request the family court to order the other spouse to pay for their adult children’s college expenses. However, the divorcing couple can agree to pay for their adult children’s college education as part of a marital settlement agreement. Family Code section 3587; In re Marriage of Rosenfeld and Gross, 225 Cal. App. 4th 478 (2014). Pursuant to statute and court cases, college expense payment provision in a stipulated marital settlement agreement, as incorporated into a Court’s judgment, constitutes adult child support such that court had jurisdiction to modify the provision in light of the settlement’s failure to specifically provide that adult child support was not subject to modification. In re Marriage of Rosenfeld and Gross, 225 Cal. App. 4th at 488 (2014). Providing for payment of adult children’s college expenses is

recognized more of an “add on to adult child support. Family Code 4062(b)(1). However, the parties may “opt out or restrict the court’s jurisdiction to modify an adult child support order (including college expenses) but the parties must expressly and specifically state in their marital settlement agreement that any resulting adult child support order will not be subject to modification or termination by the Court because the adult child support order is rooted in the parent’s contractual agreement. Cal. Family Code Section 3587, 3651(a). So if you are concerned about your spouse sharing for the college tuition and expenses of your children after the divorce, you should negotiate a provision in your marital agreement that both of you will share on the college tuition and expenses of your children. In doing so, you should also think about whether you want this provision to be non-modifiable or not. In the absence of a specific provision limiting adult child support as non-modifiable and non-termina-

D.U.I. record & U.S. citizenship application Drunk driving is the act of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol so that mental and motor skills are compromised. This criminal offense is usually called driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI). In general, a DUI conviction does not automatically bar an applicant from acquiring U.S. citizenship. However, USCIS denies many naturalization applications in this area based on a lack of good moral character. One of the basic requirements of becoming a U.S. citizen is that the applicant must be a person of “good moral character. The USCIS Policy Manual on Citizenship & Naturalization states that “An applicant for naturalization must show that he or she has been, and continues to be, a person of good moral character. Although there is no straightforward definition of a “Good Moral Character, any serious or minor criminal record such as a DUI could cast doubt on an applicant’s good moral character. If you are applying for U.S. Citizenship with a DUI record, you must disclose the arrest, charge, conviction and the facts surrounding the crime on the form N-400, Application for Naturalization. If the DUI occurrence was within the past five (5) years, it is likely the application will result in a denial because USCIS requires that “the applicant must show GMC during the five-year period immediately preceding the application for naturalization and up to the time of the Oath of Allegiance. Conduct prior to the five-year period may also impact whether the applicant meets the requirement. (Chapter 9 Volume 12 of the USCIS Policy Manual). Therefore, the chance of approval increases if the DUI occurred more than five years ago. Nevertheless, USCIS officers have discretionary authority on each individual application, and may or may not include conduct prior to the five-year period. In addition to the passage of time, circumstances surrounding the crime can also affect the outcome of the ap-

plication. If the DUI did not involve injury, death or property damage and was an isolated first offense, then it is more likely the officer may return a favorable decision. Evidence of rehabilitation such as completion of treatment programs and probation are also positive factors. It is important to provide certified arrest report, court disposition and probation documents for the USCIS officer to fully evaluate the facts of the case. Applicants with a DUI record can also provide additional evidence to prove good moral character. For example, proof of volunteer activities, active participation in church events and community activities are helpful. Applicants can also request personal declarations from past employers, community members or clergy to help establish good moral character. Applying for U.S. citizenship with a DUI record is not an automatic bar. Factors such as passage of time, circumstances surrounding the crime and past criminal record may affect the outcome of the case. It’s important to consult with an experienced U.S. immigration attorney for selecting and presenting the most helpful documentary evidence to satisfy USCIS. Susu D’Andrea is a California licensed U.S. immigration attorney who practices exclusively in the area of immigration and naturalization law and is a partner at D’Andrea Law Corporation. OPINION

Obama: China must stop land reclamation in South China Sea

MANILA, Nov 18 (Mabuhay) – US President Barack Obama said on Wednesday China must stop land reclamation in the disputed South China Sea and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to the defense and security of the Philippines, one of the parties to the dispute. Obama, speaking after a meeting with Philippine President Benigno Aquino III on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific summit in Manila, said he looked forward to working with all claimants to the waterway to resolve their disputes. “We discussed the impact of China’s reclamation and construction activities on regional stability. We agreed on the need for bold steps to lower tensions including pledging to halt further reclamation, new construction, and militarization of disputed areas in the South China Sea,” said Obama. On Tuesday, Obama visited an American-donated coast guard cutter now owned by the Philippines, one of its closest allies in the region. In the same briefing, Aquino said that he agreed with Obama that laws on the freedom of navigation at sea should be upheld, a reference to the dispute with China over claims to the South China Sea. “I take this opportunity to reiterate the Philippines’ view that the freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea must be continuously upheld, consistent with international law,” said Aquino. “President Obama and I likewise had a discussion on maritime security, including on the maritime disputes in the region, and how international law should remain the framework for behavior of all countries and for the peaceful resolution of disputes,” he added. Recently, the arbitral tribunal took jurisdiction over the Philippines’ case against Beijing’s excessive claims in the South China Sea, parts of which Manila refers to as the West Philippine Sea. Obama said that while the US is not a claimant to the South China Sea territories, the US “fully supports a process in which through international law, these are resolved.” Obama also gave the assurance that the US has a “rock solid commitment to the defense of the Philippines” as the validity of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) hangs before the Supreme Court (SC). “With respect to Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, obviously, the Philippines has to go through its process in the Supreme Court review. But we are confident that it is going to get done and we are going to be able to implement effectively the provisions and the ideas that have come forward during the course of these discussions,” said Obama. The SC has deferred at least twice its ruling on the petitions questioning the Philippines’ EDCA with the US. Under EDCA, the US will be allowed to build structures, store as well as preposition weapons, defense supplies and materiel, station troops, civilian personnel and defense contractors, transit and station vehicles, vessels, and aircraft for a period of 10 years. “The broader point is that, as a treaty ally, we have a rock solid commitment to the defense of the Philippines,” said Obama. “And part of our goal is to continue to help our treaty partners build up capacity, to make sure that the architecture of both defense work, but also humanitarian work, and other important activities in the region are coordinated more effectively, and we think that the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement is going to help us do that,” he added.(MNS)

Obama confident US-PHL arms accord to be implemented MANILA, Nov 18 (Mabuhay) – The United States reaffirmed its alliance with the Philippines in the just concluded closed-door bilateral talks between US President Barack Obama and President Aquino. Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma said Obama spoke of the strength of the US and Philippine alliance which would continue to be enhanced through joint exercises and by working with multilateral organizations. Obama emphasized his country’s advocacy on freedom of navigation and freedom of aviation. In a joint press conference, Obama told reporters of the importance of the enhanced defense cooperation agreement (EDCA) with the Philippines which has been stalled due to a case pending before the Supreme Court. Obama said he is confident that the EDCA would be implemented effectively, reaffirming the “solid commitment” of the US to “the defense of the Philippines.” “The broader point is that, as a treaty ally, we have a rock solid commitment to the defense of the Philippines,” he said. Aquino thanked Obama for assisting the Philippines in strengthening its maritime security capability or the capability to guard its

borders with the construction of the National Coast Watch Center. He also expressed support for US efforts to fight terrorism and in promoting cybersecurity cooperation. The Philippines spoke of the importance of American support for the implementation of tariff adjustments under the World Trade Organization which is expected to boost trade. Aquino expressed hope that the US will support the Philippines’ desire to be admitted to the Trans-Pacific Partnership or TPP. He thanked the US for supporting the Philippines’ eligibility for another compact with the Millennium Challenge Corporation. Obama expressed willingness to help the Philippines meet its goals to combat climate change as the Philippines expressed hope that a “meaningful agreement” will be reached during the climate change conference in Paris in December. “(President Aquino) stated that while attainment of PHL Intended Nationally Determined Contribution is conditioned on availability of external support, PH has been relentless in its pursuit to address climate change imperatives within its means,” Coloma said in a text message.(MNS)

Obama: We have ‘rock solid commitment’ to PHL defense MANILA, Nov 18 (Mabuhay) – President Barack Obama on Wednesday said the US government has a “rock solid commitment to the defense of the Philippines” as the validity of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) hangs before the Supreme Court (SC). Obama faced the media after a one-hour bilateral meeting with President Benigno Aquino III at the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. The SC has deferred at least twice

its ruling on the petitions questioning the Philippines’ EDCA with the US.

Palace: Losses due to APEC ‘recoverable’ MANILA, Nov 20 (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Friday defended the country’s hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit that inconvenienced businesses and the general public in Metro Manila. Revenue losses will eventually be recovered, Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a text message to reporters on Friday. No estimates on the amount of losses were cited by the Palace official. “Looking at the big picture, the losses incurred this week will be recovered eventually in terms of continuing and sustained growth and development of the Philippine economy as a favored investment and tourism destination,” he said. Leaders of the 21 APEC member economies on Thursday concluded their two-day summit conference at the Philippine International Convention Center on Thursday, with President Benigno Aquino III as the host head of state. The Aquino administration understands the “differences in viewpoints” on the heels

of the criticisms by the public. Roads leading to the APEC venues were closed to traffic since Saturday, forcing commuters to walk to their destinations. Small businesses within the vicinity of the PICC as well as a theme park were also closed. “Good governance requires that decisions are based on what would be beneficial for the country and what would best serve our people’s long-term interest,” Coloma said. “We acknowledge that there will be differences in viewpoints and we are willing to engage all stakeholders in meaningful dialogue as well as consider suggestions for improvement. Reasonable criticism is always welcome in a healthy democracy,” he added Meanwhile, President Aquino is expected to raise the territorial dispute in South China Sea, parts of which Manila refers to as the West Philippine Sea, at the 27th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit Friday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It will be Aquino’s last attendance to the ASEAN summit as Philippine president. His six-year term expires in June 2016.

US citizen or not, Grace Poe is natural-born ‘Filipino’ Senator Grace Poe Llamanzares has kept her presidential bid alive after getting a favorable nod recently from the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) on the disqualification case filed against her regarding citizenship and residency requirements. Voting 5-4 in favor of Llamanzares, the SET has ruled that the Senator is considered a natural-born citizen despite renouncing her citizenship and being a foundling. The SET also “threw away” the residency requirement issue against Llamanzares. The SET is composed of six senators and three Supreme Court Justices. Five Senator Judges led by Vicente Sotto III, Cynthia Villar, Loren Legarda, Pia Cayetano and Bam Aquino, all voted against Llamanzares’ disqualification case. As expected, the three Supreme Court Justices – Antonio Carpio, Arturo Brion and Teresita Leonardo de Castro – all voted to disqualify Llamanzares from her Senate seat based on the provisions of the 1987 Constitution regarding residency requirements for candidates seeking public office. Senator Nancy Binay was the only politician who sided with the Supreme Court Justices who tried to uphold what is right under the law

despite going against public clamor to allow Llamanzares to keep her seat and to run in the 2016 Presidential election. I do not begrudge the five Senators who voted in favor Llamanzares case. Except for Senator Cayetano, not one of them are lawyers and could not seem to understand or comprehend our basic fundamental law of the land. The five Senators who agreed to allow Llamanzares to keep her Senate seat claimed they voted what they deemed was fair and right, regardless of what the Constitution says. They also said that the legal victory Llamanzares got was a victory for all foundlings in the country. In their haste to give their favorable nod to the beleaguered lady solon, I am sure not one of the five Senator Judges ever bothered to read the provisions of the Constitution regarding citizenship issues, particularly

those who can be legally classified as natural born citizens. No wonder our elected politicians in Congress can’t seem to craft or enact laws that will result in the betterment of our country, in terms of peace and order and economy. Now, I know why the country’s economy has remained stagnant for years and the peace and order going from bad to worse. The ruling means Senator Llamanzares will keep her Senate seat. She is also the leading presidential candidate in most poll surveys for the 2016 national elections. I expect the Supreme Court to reverse the Tribunal’s ruling if only to adhere to the rule of law based on the Constitution which was ratified in 1987 by the Filipino people during Cory Aquino’s regime. The tribunal’s ruling is appealable within 10 days. Losing senatorial candidate Rizalito David filed the case against Llamanzares, seeking to unseat her in the Senate, citing her residency and citizenship issues. David said he will elevate the case to the Supreme Court within the next few days. Let us wait and see if the Supreme Court will implement the law without compromise and not vow to popular demand to allow Llamanzares to run in the 2016 presidential election. Meanwhile, President Aquino con-

tinues to blame others except himself for all the economic woes of the country, including unabated corruption in government, is mind boggling. In a recent speech he delivered to the delegates attending the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit meeting in Pasay city, Aquino again blamed former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for the worsening poverty situation in the country. Aquino missed the chance to look like a competent and dynamic leader. Instead of blaming others for the economic woes of the country. He could have enumerated steps he would undertake to improve the economy, unemployment and peace and order, before stepping down., Aquino is nearing the end of his six-year term as President. So far, there is no concrete proof that he has done anything substantial for the betterment of the country. For once, Aquino should be man enough to admit publicly that he has not accomplished all the things he needed to do as he had promised the electorate during the 2010 presidential election. People really got suckered in voting an indecisive, incompetent and vindictive person to become the President of the Philippine in 2010. Hopefully, the voting public will be wiser now.

pines expressed its gratitude to the public for their cooperation in observing the policies laid out during the country’s hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit. In a press briefing on Friday, AFP spokesman Colonel Restituto Padilla Jr. noted the crucial participation of the public in ensuring their security efforts were successful. “We would like to extend the thanks of the Security Task Force unang-una sa ating mga mamamayan sa kanilang patuloy na pakikinig sa ating advisory at mga pakiusap na hindi pagtuloy sa lansangan nitong mga nakaraang araw,” he said. “Malaki po ang naidulot ng inyong pag-cooperate sa pagbaba ng ating traffic congestion at sa maayos at mapayapang pag-asikaso sa ating delegado sa APEC,” he added. Padilla also said there were instances where the public gave them tips on possible threats during the APEC event. “May mga natanggap din po kaming mga abiso galing sa ating mga concerned citizens at mga mamamayan regarding sightings of suspicious persons and packages that the police readily acted on,” he said. Aside from this, Padilla said there have been no problems with their implementation of the no-fly and no-sail zones. “On the military side, the enforcement of the no-fly zone and no-sail zone, fortunately there have been no reported incidents that would seriously hamper the conduct of APEC activities during the past few days,” he said. In closing, Padilla said that public cooperation was the key to the country’s successful and generally peaceful hosting of the APEC Summit on Nov. 18-19. “Sa ating mga kababayan, kung hindi po dahil sa inyong kooperasyon, hindi po naging mapayapa at naging maayos ang ating pagsasagawa ng APEC hosting. Pero dahil po kayo ay naging masugid na tagapagsunod ng ating advisory at pinagbigyan niyo po ang pakiusap ng pamahalaan, naging maayos po [ang lahat],” he said.

MANILA, Nov 20 (Mabuhay) – The chairperson of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Senior Officials’ Meeting is convinced that their work will deliver results in the near term. According to Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Laura del Rosario, the APEC leaders had endorsed the services cooperation framework as the next growth sector that would address a slowing global economy. “I think right now when people know that the economy as a whole is slowing down, the leaders agreed that they have to look at another area to expand employment, and one of them is services,” del Rosario said. “The other thing of course is the strategy for quality growth...For the first time, I think the leaders agreed in obvious terms that growth is not just through trade and investment, there should be social policies,” she added. The APEC meetings also clarified the timing and limitations of both the US-backed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the China-initiated Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP). “We are looking at the TPP as a basis because TPP is already there, the provisions are there, and the social agendas are there. For instance, talking about environment, labor rights, intellectual property rights, in addition to tariff and investment and copyright and all that, if you look at the TPP, it is really a very high standard, so in FTAAP, people are saying, can we not choose TPP as a basis for doing FTAAP, which will cover more than the 12 members of APEC that are not currently members of TPP?” del Rosario said. Del Rosario also believes that one action plan from the APEC that can be immediately felt around the region is financial inclusion for micro, small and medium enterprises. “If you want to compete and promote innovation, even all the leaders said when you talk to services or investment, you also have to innovate,” she said. Arnel Pineda hopes to bring Journey to PHL again

planning to retire soon?

Acclaimed singer Lani Misalucha insists that she is ready to retire anytime and that, if it were all up to her, she would rather just cross-stitch. But veteran concert performer was quick to add that if there are people who still want to listen to her music, she will continue to entertain audiences. “Kung pwede ngang mag-stop na, bakit hindi?” Misalucha told reporters at a press conference for her upcoming two-night concert on December 4 and 5 at The Theatre at Solaire with special guest Arnel Pineda. She said one of the reasons she decided to move to the United States was to start anew. “To begin with hindi ko akalain na magsi-singer ako, ‘di ko pinursue ang pagiging singer. Nagpapasalamat ako na dumating sa buhay ko ‘yon na hindi ko ini-expect,” she explained. “Since na-experience ko na dito sa Pilipinas ang maging recording artist, concert performer at saka TV host, na experience ko na ganito pala ang buhay, sabi okay na. Gusto ko na magiba na ulit, start from zero kaya

nagpunta kami ng Amerika.” But she quickly realized that being an entertainment is not that easy to give up. “No matter what na pag-alis, sumusunod na pa din ;yung klaseng buhay na pag-awit, pag-perform at pag-entertain sa maraming tao. Since madami pa ding gustong makinig at makita ako na mag-perform eh ganoon ang gagawin ko,” she said. Thus Misalucha was able to establish a name for herself as a sought-after Las Vegas lounge singer. But despite her success, she reiterated that she’s ready to turn away from limelight. “Tapos magga-gantisilyo na lang, cross stitch. ... gusto ko naman ng ibang gagawin,” she said. After her pre-Christmas show, Misalucha will return to the United States to be with her children and grandchild.(MNS)

Journey vocalist Arnel Pineda is still hoping that the American classic rock band will return the Philippines next year despite the recent arrest of drummer Deen Castronovo for domestic violence. Pineda reported that Journey is looking for a new drummer after Costronovo admitted that he was fired from the band. “We are fine. Magpapalit lang kami ng drummer,” Pineda said. “I’m hoping na makarating pa din kami dito next year pero mahirap,” he conceded. Pineda is confident though that their scheduled US tour for 2016 will push through with a new drummer. The tour will start mid-May and will run until the end of September. Meanwhile, Pineda, who is on his eighth year with the band, elaborated on earlier reports indicating that he no longer has a contract with Journey. “Wala na, hand shake na lang ito, gentlemen’s agreement na lang ito. Pero nag-claim sila hanggang buo ang Journey ako ang singer. Kapag nagwatak sila, that’s it. Sabay-sabay kaming magpapahinga. ‘Yun ang sabi nila,” Pineda said Pineda said being Journey’s frontman changed his life. “Naging kumportable, mas natustusan ko ang pag-aaral ng mga anak ko,” he said. Journey was supposed to perform at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in 2013 but the concert was cancelled.

Sam Milby grilled about his new ‘inspiration’ Who is the half-Filipina, half-British woman who has been the source of inspiration for actor Sam Milby? In an interview, Milby admitted that he is still seeing the woman who is not from showbiz. “It’s too early and I really don’t want to share too much kasi masyadong maaga. But ‘yon inspired naman,” said Milby, who also won’t say if he feels she is the one for him. “It’s way too early. That’s why I don’t want to really share too much because it’s too early,” he reiterated. “Of course, I don’t think I would pursue a girl kung wala akong nakikitang future.” The actor last serious relationship was with actress Anne Curtis almost six years ago. Milby admitted that he prefers to date a girl who is not from show business. “It has always been my preference. I think after the

last it’s more of my preference that I would like it to be non-showbiz to separate ‘yung personal life and work. But you can’t help naman kung sino ang ka-love team, ka-trabaho magkikita, kayo everyday. If something happens, if something develop, you can’t help it naman but it’s always my preference for five years na sana non-showbiz para mas tahimik at separate ‘yung dalawang worlds,” he said. If given a chance, Milby said that he also wants his parents to meet the woman this Christmas. Milby earlier confirmed that he’s seeing someone who’s not from show business and who works as a model. Aside from “Doble Kara,” which airs weekdays after “It’s Showtime,” Milby will also star in the upcoming series “Written In Our Stars” with Toni Gonzaga, Piolo Pascual and Jolina Magdangal. (MNS)

John Estrada admits he’s a ‘jealous’ father John Estrada is hoping the future boyfriends of his daughters will not be exactly like him. Some people regarded Estrada as a ladies’ man when he was in his teenage years. John Estrada Estrada said in jest: “Huwag naman yung masyadong katulad ko. Yung mga ibang parte lang.” Admitting he is the jealous type of father, Estrada said he can’t detach himself from his daughters although he is aware that they will soon have their own lives. “Siyempre inevitable naman na magkaka-boyfriend sila, magkakaasawa sila. But parati ko sinasabi na I’m a jealous father. They know that. Yung panganay ko si Inah, kapag nakikita ko na may kasama, naku anak ko yan. Bakit may kasamang iba iyan at may ka-holding hands pa? I guess yung attachment ko sa mga anak ko, parang, ‘You’re mine.’ Yung ang parang I have to let go,” he explained. Nonetheless, Estrada said he is blessed to have children who are all obedient and respectful. “Masakit sa ulo [magpalaki ng mga anak]. I’m taking one day at a time. But you know what, ang babait ng mga anak ko. I’m so blessed, I’m so happy and I’m so proud of them,” he said. Estrada has four children with his former wife, Janice de Belen, while he has a daughter with his current wife, Priscilla Meirelles. (MNS)

Max Eigenmann talks about Beauty’s pregnancy How does Max Eigenmann feel now that Beauty Gonzalez is expecting her first child with her ex, art curator Norman Crisologo? Eigenmann had a past relationship with Crisologo, who is also the father of her second son. Eigenmann said she has heard a lot of good things about Gonzalez from her son. “My son spends weekends with them. They take trips together, sila ni Beauty. My son says very good things about her. She’s very nice. Nakilala ko na siya before. We were supposed to do Bridges of Love together. Magkasama kami sa story con. Mabait siya,” she said. Eigenmann, however, said she only learned about Gonzalez’s pregnancy from the media. “I was hearing about it sa news. At the end of the day, it’s none of my business. If hindi sasabihin sa akin nang diretso ni Norman or ni Beauty,

hindi ko tatanungin directly. At the end of the day, I’m very happy for them. I’m happy na we’re both settled with other people,” she said. It was just recently that Gonzalez confirmed rumors that she is pregnant. In an Instagram post, the former “Ningning” star flaunted her growing belly in a bikini. The photo had the caption: “Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon, we can float amongst the stars, together you and I.” Rumors that Gonzalez is pregnant surfaced last month after she posted a photo of her “promise” ring from her non-showbiz boyfriend Crisologo. Some netizens also noticed that the actress has gained weight. Gonzalez’ exit from “Ningning,” the daytime series starring child actress Jana Agoncillo, also fueled speculations that she is pregnant. Marlou’s humble beginnings doesn’t stop him in pursuing bigger dreams One of Southern California’s top Filipino makeup artists of today, Marlou Colina, immigrated to the United States at a young age of 20, armed with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology he earned in the Philippines. Prior to becoming a celebrity stylist he is now, he first pursued his studies in the U.S., where he earned a licensed in nursing here in the Los Angeles area. While working in the medical field, he was mesmerized by the “quest for beauty,” so he reinvented himself, followed his dreams and shifted his path by working at MAC Cosmetics in San Francisco. For him the “quest for beauty does not plague; it is a global phemomenon and a primal one. “ Further, Marlou learned that “African women beautify themselves with face paint;

Japanese geisha’s whiten their face with powder; and Indian women on the other hand, decorate themselves with henna.” Having that philosophy in mind, Marlou then worked for KABC-TV anchorwoman Denise Dador, which opened doors for him, including being hired as a makeup artist for TFC’s cable TV shows such as “Citizen Pinoy,” with immigration lawyer, Atty. Michael Gurfinkel and “Speak Out.” Currently, he is now one of Hollywood’s celebrity makeup artists, pampering clients such as: Selena Gomez, Kylie Minogue, or movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, to name a few. His pursuit for excellence in his craft, inspires him to ensure that the ladies or brides, for example, achieve their natural and simple look, yet enhanced with make-up.

Marlou Colina

Marlou treats them like queens or divas on their special day. For Marlou, he believes in the saying that goes “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” In 2009, Marlou opened his shop called “Colina Salon and Spa” at the upscale Bixby Knolls area of Long Beach, California, serving a variety of local and international stars, including the Philippines’ “Kapamilya,” and “Kapuso” television actors and actresses. Marlou’s success comes from his deep Christian beliefs that “every success in our life comes from above. Human as we are, we are bound to fail, but as long as we seek the wisdom of God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, everyone has the right to a second chance, as long as we do things for His name’s sake.” His advise to those who wish to follow his path: “Do not be discour-

aged; there are many creative outlets for you to choose from: be it theater, television or film; be aware of the various kinds of apprenticeships and internships; if you are ready to pursue your specialty, enroll in those classes and workshops. I allow myself to learn something almost everyday.” Now as a well-known makeup artist, he has garnered multiple awards such as: “Makeup Artist of the Year,” by Celebrity Chronicle in 2004; same award given to him the following year by “Headliners” in Sacramento, California; “The Most Outstanding Businessperson in the Field of Cosmetology,” given to him by Gawad Amerika and a 2015 “Distinguished Business and Styling,” award recently given to him by “The Beautiful Life” Celebration. The Raise the Wage Coalition says Long Beach needs for $15 minimum wage Long Beach, CA - Today, low-wage workers, nonprofits, small businesses, and community members spoke in support of raising the minimum wage for all of Long Beach at Mayor Robert Garcia’s second roundtable. Workers from the restaurant and retail industries, the city’s lowest paid workforce, discussed their struggle to get by in a city that is pricing out its residents. The Raise the Wage Coalition advocated for Long Beach to develop similar standards pursued by both L.A. City and County with strong enforcement against wage theft and additional paid sick days. The Coalition voiced concern that the state’s requirement of three days was insufficient to protect the public’s and workers’ health, and too many workers are going home with negative paychecks due to unpaid wages by their employers. The Raise the Wage Coalition thanked Mayor Garcia for listening to those who support the minimum wage increase, with strong wage enforcement and paid sick days. “We surveyed nonprofit partners and community members and a supermajority of the 80 respondents, including 75 percent of our organizational-partner respondents, support the minimum wage increase without exemptions,” said Christine Petit, Hub Manager at Building Healthy Communities: Long Beach. “Many nonprofit leaders understand and support the need for a minimum wage increase with strong protections against wage theft, in order to bring workers out of poverty in this

city.” During the roundtable, Francisco Abdul Estin, banquet server at the Westin Hotel in Long Beach said, “Although the law requires me take a 10 minute break, I usually have to work during my breaks because I am bound to serve our customers and no one is available to relieve me. So Yes, we must increase the salary for all workers in Long Beach, but we must also protect people like me and all my coworkers who deserve our breaks and safe working conditions.” “With a two-month old baby and a six-year old son, getting paid just $6 more would dramatically improve my life. Working seven days a week as a single mother is taking a toll on me, and I’m hardly able to keep up with the city’s soaring rent prices,” said Chantel Williams, fast-food worker and resident of Long Beach. “Like Los Angeles, Long Beach will not realize its full promise if it fails to provide its working families with a path to a higher quality of life,” said Rusty Hicks, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and a co-convener of the Campaign to Raise the Wage. “All too many are being left behind in the second largest city and economy in Los Angeles County. Long Beach has the potential to be more.” Raise the Wage is a coalition of business, labor and community leaders working to raise the minimum wage to $15, with enforcement provisions and paid sick days, to bring thousands of workers out of poverty.

California voters back higher pay BURLINGAME – CTA President Eric Heins issued this statement today about a new Field Poll on California’s K-12 teacher shortage. It shows a strong majority of registered voters understand that the shortage is very serious, and also favor higher pay for educators, along with more support, to recruit and retain more people into the profession: “This new poll of registered voters echoes what California’s educators have been saying for years about what it will take to recruit more qualified people – and more people of color – into our classrooms. Voters strongly agree the shortage is very serious, starting salaries are too low, that we must mentor our beginning teachers, and that it’s extremely important for the state to do more to inspire young people to pursue teaching as a viable profession. This is about quality, not quantity. California can attract more qualified people into our public schools by creating an environment that is free of the teacher-bashing and politicizing of our jobs, and that includes more collaboration time among colleagues on campus. We also need to inspire and target more high school students of color to join our profession. The state must act now to prioritize teacher recruitment before the shortage worsens. For our students, the future is now.” Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County Democratic Party (LACDP) adopted a resolution at its November General Membership Meeting in support of an increase in the minimum wage in Long Beach to $15 per hour. Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair and California Democratic Party Vice Chair Eric C. Bauman said of the resolution, “The Los Angeles County Democratic Party strongly supports a living wage for all working men and women in Long Beach.

Can you still avoid

this situation or is it too late? Every day, I see a lot of people who don’t even know how much they owe anymore. At some point, they knew that their debts have spun out of control so they just stopped keeping track of them. When was the last time you reviewed your credit card statements to see how much you owe, how much interest you are paying and how long it will take you to pay off what you’ve borrowed? If you haven’t done this in a while, I suggest that you take the time to do it in order to find out exactly where you are. This may be an intimidating process to some people. Others simply don’t want to know because they are in denial about how serious their debt problems are. They are afraid

to know and have to face the reality of their debts. What will it take for you to take action and do something to turn your situation around before things get worse? In order to reduce the burden of debt in your life, you will need to conquer your fears and develop a strategy to get out of debt. Maybe you need to cut your spending and learn how to live on a budget. Avoid the temptation of

In addition, during his tenure as the President of PABA, Commissioner Keh led a group of Filipino-American attorneys in providing pro-bono legal assistance to members of the Filipino-American community. “PABA is thrilled to learn that Winston has been appointed as a Court Commissioner, stated Christine Gonong, PABA President. “Winston has been a judge pro tem for the Los Angeles County Superior Court for a very long time, so he is equipped with the necessary training, experience, and temperament that will enable him to serve as an excellent commissioner. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Rob Villeza described Commissioner Keh as “fair, honest, and extremely hard working. Winston “possesses all of the best qualities of our finest judicial officers. Judge Villeza also added that, “Winston represents the true American dream for many Filipino Americans and immigrants in our country. From humble beginnings,

Winston raised his siblings on his own, worked while he went to school, and went from the mail room to the board room on his faith and sheer will to succeed despite incredible adversity. He is truly a ‘Rocky’ of our generation, and a role model and inspiration especially for the newer members of our profession. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Bernie LaForteza, who has known Winston for a long time through the Philippine American Bar Association, also congratulated Winston and stated that, “Winston will be a wonderful bench officer. I know that he will have a successful career as a judicial officer because he has the intellect and the right demeanor to do so. A court commissioner functions as a temporary judge in court cases pursuant to the stipulation of counsel or parties and is appointed by the judges of the court. Commissioner Keh will be assigned to the Fontana District Courthouse.

SEIU endorses Clinton for president (Los Angeles) – Today, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 2015 members joined with their sisters and brothers across the nation as SEIU endorsed Secretary Hillary Clinton for President. “The members of SEIU Local 2015 are proud to support Secretary Clinton for President and we look forward to continuing to work with her to ensure that long term care for our seniors and people with disabilities remains at the forefront of her agenda, and workers across the state and nation are lifted out of poverty as we continue our work in the Fight for $15,â€? said Laphonza Butler, Provisional President of SEIU Local 2015. “This is an exciting day for long term care workers across the state and the country,â€? said Vanessa PeĂąa, a home care provider and member of SEIU Local 2015. “Secretary Clinton sat down with some of my colleagues earlier this year and I am confident that she understands and values the work of long term care workers.â€? Studies show that nationwide, the demand for in-home care is skyrocketing, especially as baby boomers grow older. California alone has more people who are 65 and over than any

other state, and that number is predicted to double between 2010 and 2030. Secretary Clinton has repeatedly recognized the value of long term care for our seniors and people with disabilities, and is someone who will stand with long term care workers in the fight for a life of dignity and respect for the work they do and those they care for. SEIU’s national months-long member engagement process included a 1,200-member conference in March, three national tele-town hall meetings in which more than 80,000 members participated, three national member polls from the fall of 2014 through the fall of 2015 and more than 200 local executive board debates and discussions with thousands of local union officers and elected member-leaders. With representational responsibility for over 315,000 home care and nursing home workers, SEIU Local 2015 is the biggest long term care union in California. It is our mission to ensure all long term care workers earn a livable wage, receive the same workplace protections as other workers, and lead on policy that improves the lives of seniors and people with disabilities.

The summit is geared towards college students and young professionals to promote and inspire leadership and public service. “We are excited to launch the very first APAICS Young Leaders Summit, giving students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills to create positive change through public service and civic engagement in their local communities and campus groups,” said Amy Watanabe, APAICS Program Director. “This is an important building block for a strong foundation for the next generation of leaders and creating the political pipeline for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. From this group, we hope to see many

of these young AAPI leaders involved in local politics, be future members of Congress and even get to the Oval office,” said Floyd Mori, APAICS CEO & President. Over 45 participants from University of Utah, Utah State University, Utah Valley University, Salt Lake Community College, Brigham Young University, Weber State University and the local community attended the full-day summit. JACL NY/SC, LEAP, APAICS and APIAVote/National Tongan Society led workshops for students to explore how to to be an effective leader, network and create positive change through public service and civic engagement. Clients with very large default on mortgage seek to save house by chapter 13

Practically everyone knows that the good times of loan modification are going to end next year. Loan modifications under HAMP are set to expire December 31, 2016 after several extensions. HAMP was a direct result of the mortgage bubble in 2007 to 2009 when everyone, including your dog, could qualify for a zero down mortgage to buy a house that would increase in value almost immediately. Since the investment bankers in Wall Street concocted this plan of making the American dream of owning a house come true for anyone with a social security number, real or not, doesn’t matter, when the bubble burst and homebuyers who really were not qualified for the mortgage started defaulting, the entire financial system of the United States and the world collapsed. The stock market lost 50% of its value and we elected our first minority President to rescue us from the financial chaos unleashed by Wall Street. Our President gave us HAMP and told the banks that got bail out funds to give loan modifications to those who qualified under the guidelines. If your mortgage exceeded 31% of your gross income, you could qualify. But a lot of homeowners still could not qualify under this guideline. So, that guideline was eventually removed. In the midst of this chaos, there were some fortunate beneficiaries. By fortunate beneficiaries of this chaos, I mean homeowners who have not paid their mortgage for several years without the bank making a move to foreclose. I’ve seen clients who have not paid their mortgage for two or three years and still own their house today. However, recently, banks have been starting to ramp up foreclosures. Believe it or not, I have one client who has not paid his mortgage for 9 years as of today and the bank just sent him his notice of default, the start of the foreclosure process last week. That’s 9 years of free rent worth $324,000. Not bad at all. He is way ahead in the foreclosure game. I don’t think anyone can beat his record. It’s like winning the lottery and receiving $324,000 of cash over 9 years. Client no. 1 is 55. He has not paid his mortgage for 2 years. His mortgage arrears total $120,000. I asked him if he disputes the arrears. He said no, that’s correct. His house now has equity of $300,000. I asked him are you sure you can afford to pay the current mortgage plus $2,000 a month plan payment to cure the

default of $120,000? He said yes. He wants to keep his house. Apparently, some business associates owe him some money, about $200K, which he expects to collect in a couple of months. He decides to file a Chapter 13 to protect his house from foreclosure. It remains to be seen if he can actually produce the plan payments. But who am I to question client. If he says he can pay it, then well and good, it’s a good faith filing. Client no. 2 is 63. Her default is $118,000. She owns a 4-plex. She lives in one unit and rents out the other 3. The rent she receives is about $45K a year. She and her husband receive about $3K a month total of social security. She has not paid the mortgage for 2 years. She actually sold her house in Orange County 6 years ago and transferred her net profit to buy the 4-plex where she planned to retire with her husband. The problem, it appears is that some scofflaws in Countrywide Home Loans, created a fake trust deed and drew out $40K and left her holding the bag. In addition, they added another $30K, which is part of her $120K default. So, she’s been working with another lawyer for the last 4 years trying the get his matter resolved without any success so far. But the current lender, the bank that purchased the notes, has set the foreclosure sale for next week. ONLY A CHAPTER 13 CAN STOP THE FORECLOSURE SALE. Client sees the urgent need for Chapter 13 and decides to file one to save her 4-plex. “GIVE UNTO THE LORD THE GLORY DUE TO HIS NAME; WORSHIP THE LORD IN THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS.” PSALM 29:2. &DU VKRSSLQJ WKH QH[W JHQHUDWLRQ Friday October 30 2015 (Relaxnews) – According to an eBay-commissioned study, strapping on a virtual reality headset will soon be a normal step on the path to choosing and buying a new car. The one element of the automotive industry that is still largely untouched

by innovation is the actual purchase process. Car companies may have incredibly comprehensive websites and even a burgeoning social media presence, but car shopping is still about going in person to a dealership, talking with a sales assistant and Ă€nally signing on the dotted line. But it won’t be able to resist the digital or mobile revolution forever. The Future of Automotive Shopping Survey shows that 21% of 18-29-year-olds are already interested in using virtual reality as part of the car-buying journey and that nearly 70% of all respondents already automatically reach for a mobile device to check out a dealer’s reputation or to Ă€nd out information about marques or models on the go. “Mobile is increasingly changing the way consumers shop – whether it’s for a vehicle or parts and accessory,â€? said Sree Menon, General Manager of eBay Motors. “Today’s consumers – especially millennials – are embracing technology to enhance their own car shopping experiences.â€? The study of over 1000 US vehicle owners across age groups found that almost one in Ă€ve had already bought a car or truck online within the past Ă€ve years and that younger consumers in particular expect to be able to easily use every type of device and channel available for the clearest possible picture before picking a car. When asked why, over one third of all consumers said that they turn to the web because unlike a dealership it’s always open for business. And, almost three in 10 said that they wanted to avoid having to interact with a real-life salesperson. Car companies are beginning to test the waters in terms of technologies like VR. Volvo developed a virtual test drive app for use with Google Cardboard when it launched its Ă agship XC90 SUV in the US last November. Audi, Lexus and Infiniti have also tried out headsets as a way of offering potential customers a more immersive understanding of cars.

Nissan, Toyota, Porsche & Volvo excite the 2015 LA Auto Show By Myrna Aquitania

The 2015 LA Auto Show started with a huge press preview turnout. Highlights include various global “reveals” such as the 2015 Nissan Sentra , whose compact sedan “has experienced tremendous growth, both in sales and market share, thus making it one of Nissan’s fastest-growing brands.” In order to keep its “momentum going,” Sentra has undergone “significant revisions of its exterior redesign, as well as expanded its available safety and driving aid technologies.” The exterior redesign of the Sentra may also be seen on the new look and bold designs of the new 2016 Maxima and Altima. The three Nissans offer “ample interior roominess, including seat comfort for all occupants, as well as available leather-appointed seating. Other available features range from Dual Zone “Automatic Temperature Control and “Bose” premium audio system with eight speakers, and the Nissan Intelligent Key (keyless entry) and push button ignition systems plus RearView Monitor. The boldly-styled Nissan “Juke” Stinger Edition is a vehicle that is “hard to ignore. A true sport cross in a segment of look-alike crossovers, the Juke stands out with its unique exterior and interior design.” On the other hand, the 14 models of the 2016 Toyotas boasts of JBL’s award-winning sounds, including “sonic resolution, custom-tuned for each Toyota model,” from the RAV 4 , to Sequioa, to the Highlander, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, Tacoma Tundra, Sienna, Avalon, Camry, Venza, Prius, Prius V and Prius Plug-Ins. The JBL speakers offer “clean, crisp

sounds from every source with lower distortion and greater dynamics.”. High-end Porsche cars are located in their own exhibition area called Petry Hall. The 911 Targa 4S is such a hit among photographers curious on its torque and range capacity as well as its sleek design and exotic drivability. The all-new Volvo XC90 was named Motor Trend’s “SUV of the Year” for the second time. This award-winning SUV was “developed from the ground up on Volvo’s unique Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) with 316 supercharged horsepower and turbocharged Drive E Engine, featuring an EPA rating of 25 mpg highway, a tablet-like Sensus control system, a full suite of standard IntelliSafe features, awarded for its safety,” and of course, it includes the

understated Scandinavian design that sets this luxury SUV. Volvo’s highly-attended Press presentation included a demonstration of the driverless version. Their presentation was indeed a spectacle in itself. Before the day’s press presentation closing ceremonies, this author met with Chris Martin, Western PR Regional Manager at American Honda Motor Company. and discussed the current airbag problems of their vehicles. According to Mr. Martin, they no longer use Takata-manufactured airbags on their newer models and contrary to reports, their company is thoroughly following up on every customer who owns the later model Hondas that have the Takata airbags installed on their cars. They are also encouraging every Honda

customer to check with their dealers if their car models are included in the recall, to assist them if they need part replacement on their cars in order to ensure their safety. Not to be ignored is the Audi cars’ showroom, where the new, sleek and cool 2016 Audi A 8L model was on display. This was the same car used in the “Transporter” movie where it was driven like a turbo-charged flying machine; flying through thrilling car chases on cobblestoned European streets. ‘Really such an amazing ready- to- race car. Finally, there’s the luxury, custom-made vans of Bespoke Coach, made in Van Nuys, California. According to Rodrigo Morales, who handles the company’s luxury sales department, they introduced their new 144 Executive Coach at a starting price of $144, 900. The made-toorder coach features a full-sized van, a built-in bar, digitally-controlled refrigerator-freezer, an entertainment center equipped with Apple TV, DirecTV, Blu-Ray capabilities, motorized shades and laptop tables. It also includes four (4) Bespoke upholstered recliners in plush Italian leather, a 40” Samsung TV which doubles as a partition between the driver and passenger zones. These coaches truly personalize its passengers’ luxury desires along with an exclusive riding experience. This year’s 2015 LA Auto Show was surely worth spending a day strolling through the LA Convention Center’s West and South Hall to get a sneak peak on the upcoming new car models for next year.
