Spring is a time for hitting reset— the birds are chirping again, the weather is warming, and we’re beginning to rid our homes of what we’ve gathered during our winter hibernation. I’m kind of in awe over the spaces featured in this issue, from playful family rooms to nurseries to a North London home that is really too chic for words. Spring is just the time to launch this design issue, to inspire you to get creative at home and refresh your spaces for the new year ahead. I’ve also been bursting at the seams to share our cover shoot with mom of two, Kourtney Kardashian. Her Calabasas home is a mecca of bright colors and children’s design that will make you swoon. Not to mention, the adorable new Kardashian Kids collection just launched in Babies ‘R’ Us stores! In this issue, we’re also sharing the best rain gear for your Mini puddlejumpers, tips for designing kids spaces courtesy of your favorite designers, and hosting the Ultimate Mini Spring Giveaway on our website to celebrate the launch! So, ready or not— here we come, spring! The editorial shoot on Page 126 will help you sail into the new season in style.

Whether you’re about to be a first-time mommy or you’ve already had a few kids, transitioning from your everyday wardrobe to maternity wear can be a less than glamorous process. After all, who wants to trade in fab for drab? But why should you have to? That’s exactly the dilemma that inspired Courtney Klein’s new San Francisco-based maternity line and e-commerce site, Storq. “I heard a lot of complaints from my pregnant friends and family about a lack of stylish maternity options,” Klein explained. “We set out to offer easy solutions to the problem of dressing a pregnant body stylishly and affordably.” So, Storq was born. And they’re available in black and white which means they go perfectly with all your favorite clothes. For spring, Klein suggests matching the skirt worn high-waisted with the white tank and a denim jacket, or pairing the leggings with a long linen tunic. Along with the apparel launch, Storq also de-

THE OTHERHOOD

Melanie Notkin, founder of the Savvy Auntie movement, introduces the women who are not always “childfree by choice,” those who make up the “Otherhood.”

STORY BY MARC WENDT

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANA SCHECHTER

GET THE BOOK

Otherhood by Melanie Notkin is now available where books are sold.

Described as hilarious and heart breaking, poignant and powerful, best-selling author and entrepreneur Melanie Notkin is at it again with her latest book, Otherhood: Modern Women Finding a New Kind of Happiness. Released this March, Otherhood delves deep into an emerging class of women so far unseen in America’s modern times— those who grew up expecting love, marriage and parenthood, but ultimately found themselves living a different reality. The leading authority on all things aunthood, Notkin broke onto the national stage in 2009 with the launch of her multi-platform lifestyle brand and blog Savvy Auntie, a first-of-its-kind online community catered

specifically toward aunts, godmothers, and women who love children. From establishing the first ever national day of recognition in honor of aunts and godmothers, Auntie’s Day® (it’s July 27 this year, FYI!), to coining such terms as the ABCs (Aunties By Choice), Notkin knows everything in the book, because she wrote it. Equal parts advice and how-to, Savvy Auntie is the go-to resource for sophisticated, educated and independent aunts of every stripe and color. With the release of Otherhood this March, Notkin is going for something more profound. By sharing her own story and the stories of women like her, she gives a voice to one of today’s most overlooked social

issues. In what has been described as a groundbreaking exploration, Notkin examines the social and emotional impact of childlessness, and how the “new normal”— in essence, Otherhood— will impact social structures in the decades to come. With a perfect balance of humor and emotion, Notkin boldly asserts that motherhood does not define a woman, nor should it. In a society where nearly half of women of childbearing age are childless— not by choice, but by circumstance— Notkin takes a look at the how and the why. “This is a new class of women who didn’t expect to be childless this late in life,” Notkin explains in an interview with Today. These are the daughters of feminism, the women who earned college degrees and manage their households independently,

and in doing so never married or had kids. “But these women will not settle for a lesser life,” the Savvy Auntie founder says. “Women in the Otherhood are holding out for love and we hope that some day, we will get married and have a baby, before it’s too late,” Notkin explains. “In the meantime, we’re nurturing friendships, building careers, and are active in our nieces’ and nephews’ lives.”

Otherhood is available in book stores everywhere beginning March 4. Connect with Melanie Notkin on Facebook as Savvy Auntie, on Twitter @SavvyAuntie, and follow her blog at SavvyAuntie.com.

COVER MOM

A NEW CHAPTER With the new Kardashian Kids collection debuting this spring, Mini cover mom Kourtney Kardashian has truly come into her own as a parent. INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOGRAPHY BY GRETCHEN EASTON ASSISTED BY ABBY HALL

T

he mother of two (to son, Mason, and daughter, Penelope) recently invited Mini inside her Calabasas home to chat all things mommy chic, the new Kardashian Kids line (available now at Babies ‘R’ Us), and keeping up with her own Mini brood. But not only are the new Kardashian Kids pieces a breath of fresh, spring air, but the TV star’s home will give you that much needed boost and inspire you to get creative with your kids spaces this season.

RIGHT Kourtney’s Cameo dress and Tom Ford pumps are the perfect combo for spring.

What can we find in the new Kardashian Kids collection? KK | There is an assortment of caps, blankets, onesies, two-piece sets, jackets and dresses that are available in prints like butterflies, stars, leopard and polka dots for girls up to 24 months. I love the details we incorporated like layers of lace, pearl-embossed buttons and georgette appliques. MINI |

We’re so excited to have you on our spring cover! Let’s get started talking about the new Kardashian Kids line. What was the inspiration behind the line? KOURTNEY KARDASHIAN | I have always had a passion for children’s clothing. My mom and I opened up a children’s boutique called Smooch which we had for 5 years and I did all of the buying. My grandmother also has a children’s boutique called Shannon & Co. which she has had for 30 years and my sisters and I grew up working in. It is in our blood. Once I had my own children, I [found] a new appreciation, understanding and education about children’s clothes! MINI |

M I N I s p r i n g ‘14

How do you see both you and your sisters’ style reflected in the Mini Kardashian collection? KK | I love prints and color, Kim loves neutral, soft and simple, and Khloe has helped incorporate some trends from our women’s collection for Sears (color blocking, tribal print, animal print). MINI |

How is the line perfect for spring? KK | This collection is perfect for spring because we went with a few different palettes to work into any wardrobe. There are leopard prints, butterfly prints and these adorable silver and gold stars that we just love. MINI |

MINI ASKED MOMMY MUST-HAVE We asked Kourtney for her take on the ultimate mommy must-have. Her answer? Love and patience. More on page 70.

MINI ASKED MOM ADVICE On sharing mommy secrets with Kim: “The beauty of being a mom is finding your own special moments and I know that Kim is enjoying that very much.”

If anything, I have a slightly more routine schedule just to keep things on track.

KK |

Moms must learn to juggle, but you especially! What do you think are the keys to finding the balance between work and kids? KK | Knowing my priorities. Nothing comes before my children. I find that putting everything else in order of importance also helps to get everything done! Having an amazing partner, Daddy, does’t hurt either. MINI |

What spring style staples would you pair with pieces from the new Kardashian Kids line? KK | To me, it is all about layering pieces and the accessories. The shoes make an outfit. I love a good ballet flat, moccasin or boot. The right head piece is everything. MINI |

You come from such a fashion-forward family, we’re certain your little ones will grow up to be style savvy just like you! Has Mason started showing you his own sense of style yet? KK | Yes! Every day is different but he loves to dress himself and pick out his outfit every day. MINI |

In your everyday routine, what are some of your favorite mommy moments? KK | There are my two favorite parts of the day that are always the same. One is waking up next to their precious faces [and the other] is reading three books in bed with them to put them to sleep. MINI |

You’re now a mom of two— how has your life changed to accommodate motherhood?

MINI |

M I N I s p r i n g ‘14

COVER

MOM

Busy moms also learn to look great on little time. What helps you to pull together a look when you’re in a rush? KK | You can never go wrong with simple and classic. That is not how I usually dress, but when in a rush— it’s easy! A white T-shirt, skinny jeans, a black motorcycle jacket... easy and done. MINI |

DINNER LAST NIGHT Dinner last night was “Sushi! We all went to Nobu.”

We loved taking a peek inside your home! What was the inspiration behind the design of your kids’ spaces? KK | I think every child’s room should have some magic in it. Those magical elements just came to life once the process began. In both of their rooms, I started wanting everything all white and they both evolved once I found the perfect pieces that I knew were for them. MINI |

What are some of your favorite elements in their rooms? KK | I love the cloud wallpaper on the ceiling in Penelope’s room [and] I love the paper mâché animal heads from Anthropologie in Mason’s room. MINI |

K A R DA S H IA N K I D S Kourtney’s fave Kardashian Kids piece? “I adore the butterfly print dress.”

We adore the striped kids tee pee in your home! What other sort of kid-friendly elements can we find throughout? KK | We have a kids kitchen right next to our kitchen, another tee pee in the family room, some mini pianos in our living room next to the big piano, [plus] random cars, strollers and shopping carts floating around. Most of the kids items are in the playroom and in their bedrooms. We also have an outdoor kids space with an arts and crafts table, an easel, a fruit stand and a train set for the kids to ride on. This is a very kid-friendly home, to say the least! MINI |

TEA LOVER “I am allergic to coffee. I love tea, both hot and cold. Winter Dream Tea Latte with organic soy or almond milk and a straw. Life changing.”

Cricket’s Circle simplifies the process by recommending three top products in 200+ categories essential to new moms. How can parents benefit from Cricket’s Circle? What makes it so unique?

MINI |

The sheer number of baby products out there is overwhelming. New parents are faced with more than 150 purchasing decisions in the first year alone. We curate to simplify the process and make it easier for parents to choose with confidence. RACHEL BLUMENTHAL |

The products we recommend are practical, durable, simple, and well designed. No brands have paid or incentivized us to recommend their products. We like to say our top three products in each category pass our tried and true seal of approval.

What are some of your favorite features of Cricket’s Circle?

MINI |

We also feature fun editorial that spotlights influential moms. We ask these moms to teach us something new about motherhood and their tricks for balancing it all. Cricket’s Circle’s social component— we want your friends to weigh in and provide their experience with products. Login with Facebook and see what your friends like or dislike to inform and validate your decisions. RACHEL BLUMENTHAL |

In your opinion, what should all parents have on their registry?

MINI |

Your registry is a place to get your parents and family members to buy you the expensive items and for your friends to feel good about the $30-50 item they are going to choose for you. As such, make sure to have a nice range of price points and plenty of “gifty” yet practical items. Nobody wants to buy you those nipple pads! RACHEL BLUMENTHAL |

On the flip side, what do you think parents register for that they don’t need?

MINI |

I don’t recommend bothering with any newborn size clothes— the baby will outgrow it within 1-2 weeks. It’s not worth the money or the space in the dresser. It’s better to start with 0-3M. RACHEL BLUMENTHAL |

GWEN BUMPS IT UP

Before giving birth to her third son, Apollo Bowie Flynn Rossdale, Gwen Stefani had one of the best maternity styles we’ve seen yet. Celebrity Baby Scoop dives in to her 10 best looks. STORY BY JENNY SCHAFER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CELEBRITY BABY SCOOP

It’s not often that we choose one celebrity to showcase their maternity style. But when it comes to Gwen Stefani, it’s a nobrainer. From chic tunics and leggings, to statement jackets and heels, to glam red carpet gowns, the No Doubt frontwoman, 44, knocked our socks off with her outstanding ensembles. Let’s take a look at Gwen’s top maternity looks, while expecting her third son with husband Gavin Rossdale.

78

M I N I s p r i n g ‘14

While we were still speculating her pregnancy in early September, Gwen donned a shredded tank while out and about in Studio City, Calif., giving us a peekaboo look at her possible baby bump. In late September, the Spiderwebs singer stepped out with 5-year-old son Zuma in Yorba Linda, Calif. Sporting black leggings, heels, and a stylish long top hiding her growing belly, Gwen was all smiles as she headed to a baby shower with her youngest son. In mid-October, Gwen radiated the red carpet at the Wallis Annenberg Center For The Performing Arts Inaugural Gala in Beverly Hills, Calif. Accompanied by her husband of 11 years, rocker Gavin Rossdale, the Cool singer dressed her growing baby bump in a floorlength Ferragamo dress with fringe detail. In early November, the expectant mama looked simply radiant as she headed into a baby shower in Los Feliz, Calif. Joined by her hubby, the No Doubt frontwoman wore a printed maxi maternity dress paired with a floral headpiece. Gwen was simply glowing while dropping off her son Zuma at school in Studio City, Calif. in early November. Dressing her growing baby bump in a loose-fitting gray top, plaid jacket, skinny jeans and heels, the Just a Girl singer looked chic as always. In mid-November, Gwen and Gavin stepped out in Los Angeles, Calif. The expectant parents were seen in Chinatown before visiting an office in Studio City. The stylish mom-to-be kept cozy in a Seraphine Shakira Double Zip

Wool Maternity Coat during their outing. Gwen and Gavin were spotted with their two sons—Kingston, 7, and Zuma, 5—in Hollywood, Calif. in late November. Joined by the family pooch, the group was seen arriving at Gwen’s parents’ home to celebrate Thanksgiving. Dressed in a red coat to match her signature lips, the No Doubt frontwoman accessorized with black leggings, boots, bag and shades. Dressed in matching black and white outfits, Gwen and her sons Kingston and Zuma stepped out for Christmas Eve mass in Los Angeles, Calif. While the singer wore a monochromatic maternity dress to church, the boys donned dapper striped pants and matching bow ties. Finally, the expectant mama shared a super-chic selfie via Twitter. “bump it #allblack #inappropriateshoes #capturethemoment #miracle,” Gwen captioned her pregnant pose in late January. Looking simply radiant, the soon-to-be mom-of-three posed in front of a mirror with her iPhone, showing off her burgeoning belly in a form-fitting black Seraphine tunic over black leggings. time mom— but they keep me going, my family. They inspire me to always do better and work hard for them. What advice do you have for parents trying to manage it all? CASI DENSMORE-KOON | A few of my favorites would be— Make a list. Write it down. Make 10 lists if you have too. Get everything ready the night before for the next day. Don’t try and do it all. Sometimes you just can’t— admit it, it’s okay. Only take on what your bandwidth can hold. It’s okay to say no, if you are feeling overwhelmed, ask for help. MINI |

It really only takes a few minutes to put on some red lipstick, put your hair in a top knot and make it look like you stood in the mirror for an hour. MINI |

How would you describe your style? CASI DENSMORE-KOON | I like to mix it up. Some days I go with a classic look, others I am all about the latest trends. I’m a lot of California with a side of New York. I am obsessed with long cardigans, ankle boots and leggings. However, if I could, I would wear a dress and fancy shoes, everyday. Oh, and let’s not forget the beach waves. MINI |

he Oh Joy! lifestyle brand first launched in 2005 as a graphic design studio, but has since grown to include many licensed product lines, how-to lifestyle videos, and a well-known (and well-read!) daily blog focusing on design, fashion, food, and joyful moments from everyday life.

Clockwise: Photo credit: Bonnie Tsang; Joy strolls through her airy studio; A creative spot to work, the studio is brimming with color; The bright and bold studio is simply a gem; Studio photo credit: Zeke Ruelas Photography

Oh Joy! is so much more than a blog. Let’s start off with a day in your life. JOY CHO | No day is the same, but a typical day usually starts by checking e-mails, having staff/client meetings, and getting the more administrative tasks out of the way. In the afternoon, I focus on the creative side of my job, by working on editorial content and design projects with help from my team to brainstorm new ideas and make these projects come to life. MINI |

You have a new entertaining collection coming to Target in March! What can readers expect to see in stores? JOY CHO | There will be four Oh Joy for Target collections this year—Spring, Summer, Fall and Holiday—each in stores for six weeks only. All of the collections have a ton of color and allow you to mix and match patterns easily. The first collection for spring is inspired by a garden party. It includes paper plates, paper napkins, paper cups, melamine cups and trays, party hats and horns, balloons, wall decals and decor, serve ware, and more. The collection allows a customer to pick up everything they need to throw a party that looks handmade without having to spend the time making anything themselves.

MINI |

What are some of your favorite pieces from the collection? JOY CHO | I love the punch bowl, the cake toppers, and the patterned plates. I designed the line specifically so it would make mixing and matching pattern and color super easy and fun. MINI |

You’re also a mom to little Ruby. Is there anything you wish you had known before motherhood? JOY CHO | I wish i had slept more! Just kidding, there isn’t really anything I would have changed. No one can prepare you for what it’s like to be a mom, and once it happens, you just figure it out!

CAKE TOPPER The Oh Joy for Target cake toppers are some of Joy’s favorite pieces.

SPIRATION

“I pretty much dress her like a mini version of myself— lots of color and pattern.”

What are your keys to managing the mix between motherhood and career? JOY CHO | There’s a constant juggle that you need to have to keep some semblance of balance in your life. It’s not always easy. MINI |

The juggle is really hard and was probably the biggest transition for me into motherhood. When you own your own business, work doesn’t stop when you leave the office. I’ve had to work really hard to try and not work while I’m with Ruby and save work for when we have childcare or when she’s sleeping. I’ve increased my childcare recently, which I initially felt guilty about, but it allows me to get more done during the day so I can focus more on her when I’m with her. It’s always a work-in-progress, for sure. Juggling a career and motherhood is hard, yet you look great on little time. What are some of your simple steps to great style? JOY CHO | I really maximize on comfortable pieces that also look pulled-together: a great cotton dress that’s figure flattering or jeans and a blouse. It can become so easy to wear the same thing every day especially when you’re in mom mode. But I feel better about myself when I take a few extra minutes to try and wear something different. MINI |

What are you dressing Ruby in these days? JOY CHO | I pretty much dress her like a mini version of myself—lots of color and pattern. Having a girl is pretty fun and dangerous for your wallet. She hasn’t really had much to say (yet) about what she wears. But she does love polka dots and dresses. MINI |

Spring is a great time to travel and explore surroundings! What are your favorite kid-friendly locales in your area? JOY CHO | Echo Park Lake is a great family spot with paddle boats and a great playground for kids, as well as vendors with ice cream and popsicle carts, and fruit stands a plenty. There’s also a little cafe nearby where you can take in the beautiful scenery while getting a delicious breakfast like egg sandwiches and french toast sticks. MINI |

What quirks or traits has Ruby inherited from you and your husband? JOY CHO | When my husband really enjoys what he’s eating, he stares at each bite of food and analyzes it as he’s enjoying it. Ruby does the same thing. It’s really cute. MINI |

What’s important to you in raising your daughter? JOY CHO | It’s important to us that she be kind to people. We are firm, yet loving, and make sure she knows what kinds of behavior are not acceptable. [We] give her lots of encouragement and praise as she’s learning and doing the right things in life. MINII |

What advice would you give to others looking to start blogs this year? JOY CHO | Most importantly— do your research. There are so many blogs these days, it’s important to make sure you’re doing something that’s different. Be authentic in what you write about [and] write about the things that you genuinely love, whether someone reads your post or not. Write for your own enjoyment first. If you are creative, authentic, and doing something different, people will tune in. MINI |

Your book is hard to put down! What inspired you to write, Balancing It All? CANDACE CAMERON BURE | It’s the big question all of us women want to know, right? We don’t need to compare ourselves but instead, invest in what’s most important in each of our lives. Learning to juggle as a parent can be difficult to pick up. What’s the best advice you can give to new parents? CANDACE CAMERON BURE | Ask for help! Don’t be shy— whether it’s help from your husband, your kids, your parents, your friend or hired help. There’s no reason to try to be super woman; she doesn’t exist. MINI |

What have you found are the keys to Balancing It All? CANDACE CAMERON BURE | In one word, prioritizing. I do believe you can balance it all, but some things may have to give for a season and be picked up again later. Re-prioritizing on a yearly basis as well as a daily basis are key. If you invest in the right things for your life, all of those overlapping elements will create a natural balance in life. MINI |

The greatest struggle for me is wondering if what i’m doing as a mom is enough. It’s so easy to look to others and think they’re doing it better than you. I just remember that I can only be the best me, not anyone else. CANDACE CAMERON BURE |

LEFT After her runway shows, MILLY designer Michelle Smith often takes a stroll with her children.

Before we get started, you just finished up with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week! Talk to us about the new Fall 2014 collection. MICHELLE SMITH | My fall collection focused on layers of luxurious textures and movement. I was inspired by classical dancers. Color wise, the collection incorporated the colors of the sky at dusk. My runway show opened with ballet pinks and progressed to slate greys, metallic palladium and black. MINI |

How can you see your personal style reflected in the MILLY line? MS | My personal style is feminine with an edge, which is reflected in my collection. I design with my dream wardrobe in mind and I try everything on personally to be sure everything fits exactly the right way and that every detail is perfect. MINI | We love that your daughter, Sophia, 6, inspires your MILLY Minis line! Tell us more about how the line came to be MS | I noticed she and her friends loved to dress up and wanted to look like their mommies. The childrenswear collection harkens back to the MILLY ready to wear collection. I use the same luxurious European fabrics and add the same details, just tinier, from leather piping to custom zippers. MINI |

What are some of your favorite pieces in the current Minis collection? MS | I love to create really special dresses, tops, coats and bottoms that I know my daughter and her friends would love to wear. I also design a swimwear line, MILLY Minis Cabana, for children, that is comprised of cover-ups and bikinis, like my MILLY Cabana line. The collection is guided by bright, fun colors. MINI |

Let’s talk style staples. What essentials should every mom have in her closet? MS | Every mom should have a statement coat. You can just be wearing a tee shirt and jeans underneath and you¹ll always look pulled together. I love a great tweed jacket that can be dressed up or down too. MINI |

RIGHT The MILLY Minis line is inspired by Smith’s daughter, Sophia.

How do you manage to maintain the balance of being both a designer and mother of two? MS | My husband, Andy Oshrin, is the President and CEO of MILLY. We maintain a balance by taking both of our children to school in the morning and by leaving the office in time for dinner.

MINI |

What is it like to raise your children in New York City? MS | I love it. My children are in awe of this city and they enjoy what it has to offer, from visiting The Museum of Natural History to ice skating in Central Park on the weekends. I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

MINI |

MINI |

You’ve said that you love traveling with your kids. Of all the family vacations you¹ve taken, which is your favorite? MS | We love to travel to Petit St. Vincent— it’s a small, remote island off of St. Vincent. There’s no wi-fi, so it’s easy to unplug. We love to make sandcastles together, lie in the hammocks, and go snorkeling. What’s your best advice for parents traveling with little ones this spring? MS | I say travel with them while they’re small they’ll get used to it quickly— it fosters a sense of adventure. Also, distractions are key: the invention of iPads has made things a little easier!

FA M I LY A F FA I R Designers and parents of seven, Robert and Cortney Novogratz push the boundaries and leave their mark on every space they create. Now the family sits down to share spring decor tips with Mini. INTERVIEW BY MARC WENDT AND KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANCESCO LAGNESE

With seven kids, did you always know you wanted a big family? THE NOVOGRATZ | Yes, but we never imagined having seven kids in NYC. It’s definitely a blast! We love that we created our own tribe and get to spend most of our time together as a family. MINI |

104

M I N I s p r i n g ‘14

For many Mini parents, keeping Mom and Dad’s days straight is a challenge. How do you manage everybody’s schedules with such a big family? THE NOVOGRATZ | We are very organized and count on the older kids to help out. Thankfully, NYC has a mass transit system that makes it easier since we don’t have to carpool. MINI |

LEFT Each space in the family’s home is both bright and bold.

Getting all seven kids out the door on time must be a challenge! Give us a sneak peek into your life— what does a typical day look like for you? THE NOVOGRATZ | Mornings are easy: Robert takes the three younger kids to school first; Major and Holleder go to Catholic school in the Village and Five goes to public school two blocks away. Bellamy and Wolfgang go to private school in Brooklyn and take the school bus; Breaker and Tallulah take a taxi to their school Uptown. MINI |

We know everyone must ask, but give us the rundown. What was your inspiration in naming your children? THE NOVOGRATZ | Wolfgang was named after Mozart; Bellamy means “beautiful friend” in French; Tallulah is a classic southern name (we’re both from the South); Breaker after an Aussie named “Breaker Morant;” Five is our MINI |

fifth child; Holleder was named after Robert’s grandfather’s football teammate Don Holleder who was killed in Vietnam; Major was named after Robert’s father who was a major in the army. What inspired you to design your own kids spaces? What could we expect to find there? THE NOVOGRATZ | We like open spaces for kids to have room to grow. We like putting elements of art and music in their rooms to inspire them. Each kid should have their own desk or space to be organized and create. MINI |

How do you recommend parents fuse style and function in homes with little ones? THE NOVOGRATZ | Keep it real— don’t go “theme-y” in kids’ spaces. Style usually evokes creativity. MINI |

KIDDIE GALLERY Up to your ears in kids artwork? Don’t go for the fridge. Robert and Cortney suggest Jan Eleni, “she takes digital images of your kids’ faces, shrinks them down and puts them all in one big frame.”

LEFT A favorite room in the Novogratz home is the kitchen. BELOW The whole family gathers around a long table with “built in drawers to keep crayons and pencils at the ready.”

We know that your favorite room in the house is the kitchen—why? What is your kitchen like? THE NOVOGRATZ | It’s a place where our whole family can gather. We have a large kitchen table where the kids can set up and do their homework. There are built in drawers to keep crayons and pencils at the ready. And we get the kids involved in setting the table to make it an easy transition. MINI |

What has been your favorite kids design element you’ve included in a family’s home? THE NOVOGRATZ | We have done some cool things with our kids, but probably our most favorite is the tree house in Trancoso, Brazil. MINI |

106

M I N I s p r i n g ‘14

It’s easy to tell you’re passionate about family and career. Have you learned anything over the years that helps you maintain the perfect mix of both? THE NOVOGRATZ | We love what we do. Since we run our own business, we can put family first. Life is not perfect and everyday is a different challenge. The key is to make a happy household as the foundation to handle what life throws your way. MINI |

MINI DESIGN 101 Robert and Cortney Novogratz give us the Mini 411 on designing kids spaces START WITH ART Make art a priority. Cool artwork can really bring a room to life, and will inspire your kids to explore their creativity. BE BOLD Kids rooms are a great place to take risks, so go ahead and try that bold color you’ve been dreaming about. MAKE IT THEIR OWN Every kid should have their own workspace for homework, art and games. We like to mount a roll of craft paper on the wall near the desk so kids can always tear off a fresh sheet of paper to draw and paint on. SOFT SPOTS Kids spend a lot of time on the floor so it’s nice to have a large carpeted area. Carpet tiles work especially well for children. If something gets spilled, you only have to replace a tile or two instead of the whole rug. SPRING CLEANING Kids have so many little toys and games, but you can minimize the clutter by storing them in pretty bins or baskets that are easy to reach.

UP, UP AND AWAY Don’t forget the ceiling. Babies spend a lot of time looking at the ceiling, so make it interesting— painted stripes work really well or you can invest in a nice light fixture that will grow with your child. BEDTIME STORIES Reading to your kids is a great bonding experience. We love a really big, comfy chair so the whole family can snuggle up for bedtime stories.

Your work is lovely! What is your design philosophy and how does it translate into your work? SHANNON WOLLACK | My design philosophy is to keep a balance between being unique, contemporary, timeless, with a touch of funk. We love our rooms to have personality, while staying livable and approachable. MINI |

How would you suggest parents still have great style in their homes, but also make spaces kid-friendly? SW | My best advice would be to use durable materials and use pieces that are timeless and can be used as the kids grow up. It is also really important to stay organized and have MINI |

a system to keep all kids spaces tidy and toys unseen. Having a nice credenza to store toys, games and knick-knacks is great. You’re a mom to Spencer, plus one on the way! Talk to us about the inspiration for Spencer’s nursery. SW | My inspiration for Spencer’s nursery was the Alexander Calder piece that we inherited when Brad and I got married— we thought it was fun and it also had sentimental meaning. Being such a playful piece of art, we wanted that to be the statement of the nursery, and to keep other elements subtle. We still wanted to incorporate pops of color like the blue chair, the tonal wallpaper, and the black lamps. MINI |

I didn’t want her nursery to feel too “baby” or young, so I played along the fine line of combining youth with sophistication and glamour. MINI |

RIGHT Emily and husband, Brian, in an ultimate battle of the bump.

How would you describe your design philosophy? EMILY HENDERSON | My general philosophy is that your home should look like your personality. Some people are big and loud and colorful and some are more introverted and quiet. Your room should feel like you and it’s shocking how often this isn’t the case. People become obsessed with making their home so perfect when really perfect homes, like perfect people, aren’t that interesting to be around. MINI |

What are some of your favorite elements to incorporate into your work? How about in children’s spaces? EH | Well, it’s no secret that I use a ton of vintage, mainly because its affordable and always unique. Same in a kids room— I want Charlie’s room to be first and foremost functional and comfortable, but then really happy and interesting. So I bought a modern crib and glider, but brought in a vintage dresser, handmade art and lots of crazy accessories. I like spaces to feel low maintenance and relaxing, even if it’s a formal living room. Nothing too fussy, nothing too buttoned-up and using a lot of vintage throws things off in a good MINI |

way. You’re now a new mom to Charlie! How has life changed since becoming a parent? EH | I’m actually shocked how much I love being a mom. I think I had low expectations because I have so many friends that told me how hard it is. And while yes, it’s hard, it’s also so much more fun than I thought it was going to be. I never thought that I’d love an infant so much. My favorite part of parenthood is now knowing that really nothing else matters. I ignore the annoying emails that used to get to MINI |

me, I don’t care if I don’t land a job I thought I wanted— all that matters is raising my kids. It just makes you relax and just, happier. Tell us about your son’s nursery. What are some of space’s design highlights? EH | I’ve wanted this wallpaper for years, since I first layed eyes on it on Pinterest. It’s a show stopper and it’s perfect for the style of our house. MINI |

What were your style staples during pregnancy? EH | A structured jacket to make your shoulders and ribs look small. Lots of belts to wear high, so it shows that you are indeed pregnant. MINI |

Lots of patterns to hide any unsightly (and inevitable) panty lines or bra lines. And buy yourself one or two pairs of fancy maternity jeans. I wore them every day during the pregnancy and were worth EVERY single penny. If you could give Charlie one piece of design or style advice, what would it be? EH | Have fun and go crazy. I’m obviously praying that Charlie appreciates design and style and if he does, then from a very early age, I’m going to let him make decisions. I want him to feel free to put any colors together, any outfits together and express himself in his style. We’ll see... MINI |

How are you renovating the space to fit

RIGHT Genevieve is currently renovating her twostory, Chelsea brownstone to fit life with 6-year-old daughter, Bebelle.

your life with your daughter, Bebelle? GG | I’m combining two apartments to make a space that my daughter can really grow up in. It feels like a beautiful, quiet treehouse in the middle of the most insane city in the world. It’s how I give her and myself some balance and peace. I wanted a space that could house lots of kids, outdoor space so my daughter isn’t an alien to nature, and space for family to hibernate so people can visit more often. Beyond that, [I’m excited about] my kitchen. If I weren’t a designer, I would be a chef. I spend an incredible amount of time in this space and it’s gonna be dope!

which is now her desk. I think it’s important to include ancestral pieces in children’s rooms. I want her to know what old wood and good craftsmanship feels like, sounds like and looks like. You also have a new digital magazine app coming out, Real Genevieve! Talk to us about how you came up with the idea. GG | I do! This spring, I’m launching my own magazine as well; I thought it was time. There is a lot to say and show that doesn’t fit into 22 minutes of TV. I can speak more specifically to design, design needs, trends, and break into a broader platform of lifestyle. It’s pretty exciting.

MINI |

We’re certain Bebelle must have some input in designing these new spaces! If she had it her way, what would we see in your home? GG | She did have it her way! It’s pink, but a beautiful pink that I wouldn’t hesitate to put in any home. I think children’s imaginations should always lead, especially in their spaces. It’s our job to introduce them to elegance, history and balance.

MINI |

How did you design your daughter’s new space? GG | There is a big swing in the middle of her room— why not? It cost about $20 to make and it’s the showpiece. Her great grandma’s bed has been refinished and is now hers, as well as her great-great grandma’s vanity

Moms must learn to juggle, especially when they’re filming a show, renovating a home, and keeping up with a little one! How do you manage to stay chic on the go? GG | I’ve been a dust ball this last year, but that can be chic too— not kidding! I think I got more complements on my dressed-

down attire than ever before. My key is always having pieces that are tailored to fit you. Whether you get them from Forever 21 or Gucci, your clothes should always fit your body well. A good gel manicure makes it look like I’m not always working with my hands (hides varnish and oil paint under nails beautifully) and everyday boots. At the end of a long day, how do you unwind with Bebelle? GG | We cook together. Cooking is something that calms me and I find [it to be] a really important skill to have in life. It also trains her palette to a broader spectrum.

Do you think she’s inherited your design savvy? GG | 100% yes— she has the terminology already. Her description of color blows me away. “Mom, it’s like a mix of fuschia and persimmon, but not quite either one exactly;” it’s nuts. She also has an incredible eye which I respect and listen to very seriously. I always ask for her opinion. M I N I s p r i n g ‘14

How would you describe your home’s design style? COURTNEY ADAMO | We have an old Victorian home with lots of original details like ceiling cornices, wooden floors and old fireplaces, so the house has so much charm on its own. We renovated it a few years ago— we were able to modernize it a bit and give it our own style, but mostly we kept everything quite simple. By the time we finished our renovation project, our design budget was quite small, so our furniture and decorations are really just a collection of random things we’ve picked up over the years. Which spaces in your home are your favorites? CA | I love our kitchen. It’s light and bright and big enough for our family of six. It’s really the hub of our house, where we spend most of our time. It also looks out onto our garden, so we can watch the birds and squirrels (and even foxes!) from our kitchen table. In the summertime, you can open the doors directly onto the back garden and it’s so nice that the kids can run in and out. When we renovated our house, we decided to go with a modern version of a MINI |

LEFT Courtney let the home’s white painted floors become a design building block. BELOW Simple, woven baskets act as a catch-all for children’s toys.

What are your tips for parents looking to design great children’s spaces, much like yours? CA | I always think it’s easiest to start with a simple color palette (in my case, I went with white walls and white painted floors) and to let the children’s accessories and toys add color to their rooms. I also like to use baskets for toy storage because I like the way they look, and I also like that the kids have access to their toys and can easily tidy things up again when they’re finished playing. My children’s rooms have a lot of vintage and reclaimed pieces which I think adds a bit of character and charm to their rooms. MINI |

Juggling a career and motherhood is hard. What advice can you give readers to help them manage the chaos? CA | My best advice is to try to be present in the moment. I try to never check emails on my phone or answer work calls when I’m with my kids. I usually work from 9 until 3 every day while the bigger kids are at school. I try to be as efficient as I can during that time so that when I pick the kids up I can focus on being their mama. We also have a “no computers on the weekends” rule that we try to stick to. It means that our weekends are really focused on the kids and our time together. MINI |

LEFT Courtney is a cofounder of the popular parenting website, Babyccino Kids.

You also co-founded Babyccino Kids. Tell us what we can expect to find there. CA | Babyccino is an online shopping portal of children’s boutiques. We offer a directory with around 300 of the world’s best and most stylish shops, sorted into categories to make it easy for parents to find what they’re looking for and to discover great new shops and brands. MINI |

How do your children inspire your work with Babyccino? CA | I’m constantly trying to find fun activities for my kids, cute craft projects to do with them, fun ideas for birthday parties, clever ways to decorate their bedrooms. All of these things inspire the projects we do on our blog and the direction of our business. MINI |

What are you most looking forward to this spring? CA | I’m so excited for spring! Can’t wait for the girls to wear little sundresses and for the boys to wear sneakers without socks and simple tees! I love the sweet dresses by Bonton and those from Miller. And I always buy the boys simple Bonton shorts and classic Bensimon sneakers. MINI |

If there were more hours in the day, what would you do? CA | Read more books, write more letters, learn to sew and practice yoga every day! MINI |
