Whether you’re about to be a first-time mommy or you’ve already had a few kids, transitioning from your everyday wardrobe to maternity wear can be a less than glamorous process. After all, who wants to trade in fab for drab? But why should you have to? That’s exactly the dilemma that inspired Courtney Klein’s new San Francisco-based maternity line and e-commerce site, Storq. “I heard a lot of complaints from my pregnant friends and family about a lack of stylish maternity options,” Klein explained. “We set out to offer easy solutions to the problem of dressing a pregnant body stylishly and affordably.” So, Storq was born. Giving women the ability to maintain their sense of style and identity throughout their pregnancy, Storq supplies the

KOURTNEY KARDASHIAN | I have always had a passion for children’s clothing. My mom and I opened up a children’s boutique called Smooch which we had for 5 years and I did all of the buying. My grandmother also has a children’s boutique called Shannon & Co. which she has had for 30 years and my sisters and I grew up working in. It is in our blood. Once I had my own children, I [found] a new appreciation, understanding and education about children’s clothes! MINI |

In both of their rooms, I started wanting everything all white and they both evolved once I found the perfect pieces that I knew were for them. MINI |

What are some of your favorite elements in their rooms? KK | I love the cloud wallpaper on the ceiling in Penelope’s room [and] I love the paper mâché animal heads from Anthropologie in Mason’s room. MINI |

We adore the striped kids tee pee in your home! What other sort of kid-friendly elements can we find throughout? KK | We have a kids kitchen right next to our kitchen, another tee pee in the family room, some mini pianos in our living room next to the big piano, [plus] random cars, strollers and shopping carts floating around. Most of the kids items are in the playroom and in their bedrooms. We also have an outdoor kids space with an arts and crafts table, an easel, a fruit stand and a train set for the kids to ride on. In keeping up with your busy life, how do you manage to look chic on little time? CASI DENSMORE-KOON | I do a lot of online shopping when I can. I always lay out my outfit the night before, always. It really only takes a few minutes to put on some red lipstick, put your hair in a top knot and make it look like you stood in the mirror for an hour. MINI |

How would you describe your style? CASI DENSMORE-KOON | I like to mix it up. Some days I go with a classic look, others I am all about the latest trends. I’m a lot of California with a side of New York. I am obsessed with long cardigans, ankle boots and leggings. However, if I could, I would wear a dress and fancy shoes, everyday. Oh Joy! is so much more than a blog. Let’s start off with a day in your life. JOY CHO | No day is the same, but a typical day usually starts by checking e-mails, having staff/client meetings, and getting the more administrative tasks out of the way. In the afternoon, I focus on the creative side of my job, by working on editorial content and design projects with help from my team to brainstorm new ideas and make these projects come to life. You have a new entertaining collection coming to Target in March! What can readers expect to see in stores? JOY CHO | There will be four Oh Joy for Target collections this year—Spring, Summer, Fall and Holiday—each in stores for six weeks only. All of the collections have a ton of color and allow you to mix and match patterns easily. The first collection for spring is inspired by a garden party. It includes paper plates, paper napkins, paper cups, melamine cups and trays, party hats and horns, balloons, wall decals and decor, serve ware, and more. The collection allows a customer to pick up everything they need to throw a party that looks handmade without having to spend the time making anything themselves.

What are some of your favorite pieces from the collection? JOY CHO | I love the punch bowl, the cake toppers, and the patterned plates. I designed the line specifically so it would make mixing and matching pattern and color super easy and fun. MINI |

You’re also a mom to little Ruby. Is there anything you wish you had known before motherhood? JOY CHO | I wish i had slept more! Just kidding, there isn’t really anything I would have changed. No one can prepare you for what it’s like to be a mom, and once it happens, you just figure it out!

What are your keys to managing the mix between motherhood and career? JOY CHO | There’s a constant juggle that you need to have to keep some semblance of balance in your life. It’s not always easy. MINI |

The juggle is really hard and was probably the biggest transition for me into motherhood. When you own your own business, work doesn’t stop when you leave the office. I’ve had to work really hard to try and not work while I’m with Ruby and save work for when we have childcare or when she’s sleeping. I’ve increased my childcare recently, which I initially felt guilty about, but it allows me to get more done during the day so I can focus more on her when I’m with her. It’s always a work-in-progress, for sure. Juggling a career and motherhood is hard, yet you look great on little time. What are some of your simple steps to great style? JOY CHO | I really maximize on comfortable pieces that also look pulled-together: a great cotton dress that’s figure flattering or jeans and a blouse. It can become so easy to wear the same thing every day especially when you’re in mom mode. But I feel better about myself when I take a few extra minutes to try and wear something different. MINI |

What are you dressing Ruby in these days? JOY CHO | I pretty much dress her like a mini version of myself—lots of color and pattern. Having a girl is pretty fun and dangerous for your wallet. She hasn’t really had much to say (yet) about what she wears. But she does love polka dots and dresses. MINI |

Spring is a great time to travel and explore surroundings! What are your favorite kid-friendly locales in your area? JOY CHO | Echo Park Lake is a great family spot with paddle boats and a great playground for kids, as well as vendors with ice cream and popsicle carts, and fruit stands a plenty. There’s also a little cafe nearby where you can take in the beautiful scenery while getting a delicious breakfast like egg sandwiches and french toast sticks. MINI |

What quirks or traits has Ruby inherited from you and your husband? JOY CHO | When my husband really enjoys what he’s eating, he stares at each bite of food and analyzes it as he’s enjoying it. Ruby does the same thing. It’s really cute. MINI |

What’s important to you in raising your daughter? JOY CHO | It’s important to us that she be kind to people. We are firm, yet loving, and make sure she knows what kinds of behavior are not acceptable. [We] give her lots of encouragement and praise as she’s learning and doing the right things in life. What advice would you give to others looking to start blogs this year? JOY CHO | Most importantly— do your research. There are so many blogs these days, it’s important to make sure you’re doing something that’s different. Be authentic in what you write about [and] write about the things that you genuinely love, whether someone reads your post or not. Write for your own enjoyment first. If you are creative, authentic, and doing something different, people will tune in. MINI |

Your work is lovely! What is your design philosophy and how does it translate into your work? SHANNON WOLLACK | My design philosophy is to keep a balance between being unique, contemporary, timeless, with a touch of funk. We love our rooms to have personality, while staying livable and approachable. MINI |

How would you suggest parents still have great style in their homes, but also make spaces kid-friendly? SW | My best advice would be to use durable materials and use pieces that are timeless and can be used as the kids grow up. It is also really important to stay organized and have MINI |

a system to keep all kids spaces tidy and toys unseen. Having a nice credenza to store toys, games and knick-knacks is great. You’re a mom to Spencer, plus one on the way! Talk to us about the inspiration for Spencer’s nursery. SW | My inspiration for Spencer’s nursery was the Alexander Calder piece that we inherited when Brad and I got married— we thought it was fun and it also had sentimental meaning. Being such a playful piece of art, we wanted that to be the statement of the nursery, and to keep other elements subtle. We still wanted to incorporate pops of color like the blue chair, the tonal wallpaper, and the black lamps. MINI |

How are your preparing for your new little one? What are you hoping to include design-wise in her nursery? SW | My husband told me “no pink” in the nursery. [But] my design team and I came across a hot pink wallpaper and couldn’t resist... whoops! I didn’t want her nursery to feel too “baby” or young, so I played along the fine line of combining youth with sophistication and glamour. MINI |

What is your best tip for designing children’s spaces? SW | There are so many great fabrics right now that are stain and water resistant that would be so great for children’s spaces. MINI |

How would you describe your design philosophy? EMILY HENDERSON | My general philosophy is that your home should look like your personality. Some people are big and loud and colorful and some are more introverted and quiet. Your room should feel like you and it’s shocking how often this isn’t the case. People become obsessed with making their home so perfect when really perfect homes, like perfect people, aren’t that interesting to be around. MINI |

What are some of your favorite elements to incorporate into your work? How about in children’s spaces? EH | Well, it’s no secret that I use a ton of vintage, mainly because its affordable and always unique. Same in a kids room— I want Charlie’s room to be first and foremost functional and comfortable, but then really happy and interesting. So I bought a modern crib and glider, but brought in a vintage dresser, handmade art and lots of crazy accessories. I like spaces to feel low maintenance and relaxing, even if it’s a formal living room. Nothing too fussy, nothing too buttoned-up and using a lot of vintage throws things off in a good MINI |

way. You’re now a new mom to Charlie! How has life changed since becoming a parent? EH | I’m actually shocked how much I love being a mom. I think I had low expectations because I have so many friends that told me how hard it is. And while yes, it’s hard, it’s also so much more fun than I thought it was going to be. I never thought that I’d love an infant so much. My favorite part of parenthood is now knowing that really nothing else matters. I ignore the annoying emails that used to get to MINI |

me, I don’t care if I don’t land a job I thought I wanted— all that matters is raising my kids. It just makes you relax and just, happier. Tell us about your son’s nursery. What are some of space’s design highlights? EH | I’ve wanted this wallpaper for years, since I first layed eyes on it on Pinterest. It’s a show stopper and it’s perfect for the style of our house. MINI |

What were your style staples during pregnancy? EH | A structured jacket to make your shoulders and ribs look small. Lots of belts to wear high, so it shows that you are indeed pregnant. MINI |

Lots of patterns to hide any unsightly (and inevitable) panty lines or bra lines. And buy yourself one or two pairs of fancy maternity jeans. I wore them every day during the pregnancy and were worth EVERY single penny. If you could give Charlie one piece of design or style advice, what would it be? EH | Have fun and go crazy. I’m obviously praying that Charlie appreciates design and style and if he does, then from a very early age, I’m going to let him make decisions. I want him to feel free to put any colors together, any outfits together and express himself in his style. We’ll see... MINI |

How are you renovating the space to fit

RIGHT Genevieve is currently renovating her twostory, Chelsea brownstone to fit life with 6-year-old daughter, Bebelle.

your life with your daughter, Bebelle? GG | I’m combining two apartments to make a space that my daughter can really grow up in. It feels like a beautiful, quiet treehouse in the middle of the most insane city in the world. It’s how I give her and myself some balance and peace. I wanted a space that could house lots of kids, outdoor space so my daughter isn’t an alien to nature, and space for family to hibernate so people can visit more often. Beyond that, [I’m excited about] my kitchen. If I weren’t a designer, I would be a chef. I spend an incredible amount of time in this space and it’s gonna be dope!

which is now her desk. I think it’s important to include ancestral pieces in children’s rooms. I want her to know what old wood and good craftsmanship feels like, sounds like and looks like. You also have a new digital magazine app coming out, Real Genevieve! Talk to us about how you came up with the idea. GG | I do! This spring, I’m launching my own magazine as well; I thought it was time. There is a lot to say and show that doesn’t fit into 22 minutes of TV. I can speak more specifically to design, design needs, trends, and break into a broader platform of lifestyle. It’s pretty exciting.

We’re certain Bebelle must have some input in designing these new spaces! If she had it her way, what would we see in your home? GG | She did have it her way! It’s pink, but a beautiful pink that I wouldn’t hesitate to put in any home. I think children’s imaginations should always lead, especially in their spaces. It’s our job to introduce them to elegance, history and balance.

How did you design your daughter’s new space? GG | There is a big swing in the middle of her room— why not? It cost about $20 to make and it’s the showpiece. Her great grandma’s bed has been refinished and is now hers, as well as her great-great grandma’s vanity

Moms must learn to juggle, especially when they’re filming a show, renovating a home, and keeping up with a little one! How do you manage to stay chic on the go? GG | I’ve been a dust ball this last year, but that can be chic too— not kidding! I think I got more complements on my dressed-

A good gel manicure makes it look like I’m not always working with my hands (hides varnish and oil paint under nails beautifully) and everyday boots. At the end of a long day, how do you unwind with Bebelle? GG | We cook together. Cooking is something that calms me and I find [it to be] a really important skill to have in life. It also trains her palette to a broader spectrum.

Her description of color blows me away. “Mom, it’s like a mix of fuschia and persimmon, but not quite either one exactly;” it’s nuts. She also has an incredible eye which I respect and listen to very seriously. I always ask for her opinion. At this moment, she says she’s going to be a “dress designer.” Last year, she was intent on designing “hamburger rugs.” I think there is a void in the market for sure. MINI |

How would you describe your home’s design style? COURTNEY ADAMO | We have an old Victorian home with lots of original details like ceiling cornices, wooden floors and old fireplaces, so the house has so much charm on its own. We renovated it a few years ago— we were able to modernize it a bit and give it our own style, but mostly we kept everything quite simple. By the time we finished our renovation project, our design budget was quite small, so our furniture and decorations are really just a collection of random things we’ve picked up over the years. Which spaces in your home are your favorites? CA | I love our kitchen. It’s light and bright and big enough for our family of six. It’s really the hub of our house, where we spend most of our time. It also looks out onto our garden, so we can watch the birds and squirrels (and even foxes!) from our kitchen table. In the summertime, you can open the doors directly onto the back garden and it’s so nice that the kids can run in and out. What are your tips for parents looking to design great children’s spaces, much like yours? CA | I always think it’s easiest to start with a simple color palette (in my case, I went with white walls and white painted floors) and to let the children’s accessories and toys add color to their rooms. I also like to use baskets for toy storage because I like the way they look, and I also like that the kids have access to their toys and can easily tidy things up again when they’re finished playing. My children’s rooms have a lot of vintage and reclaimed pieces which I think adds a bit of character and charm to their rooms. MINI |

Juggling a career and motherhood is hard. What advice can you give readers to help them manage the chaos? CA | My best advice is to try to be present in the moment. I try to never check emails on my phone or answer work calls when I’m with my kids. I usually work from 9 until 3 every day while the bigger kids are at school. I try to be as efficient as I can during that time so that when I pick the kids up I can focus on being their mama. We also have a “no computers on the weekends” rule that we try to stick to. It means that our weekends are really focused on the kids and our time together. MINI |

How do your children inspire your work with Babyccino? CA | I’m constantly trying to find fun activities for my kids, cute craft projects to do with them, fun ideas for birthday parties, clever ways to decorate their bedrooms. All of these things inspire the projects we do on our blog and the direction of our business. MINI |

What are you most looking forward to this spring? CA | I’m so excited for spring! Can’t wait for the girls to wear little sundresses and for the boys to wear sneakers without socks and simple tees! I love the sweet dresses by Bonton and those from Miller. And I always buy the boys simple Bonton shorts and classic Bensimon sneakers. MINI |

If there were more hours in the day, what would you do? CA | Read more books, write more letters, learn to sew and practice yoga every day! MINI |
