All Shook Up!

Love and Rock ‘n Roll at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre By Nicholas Connell Put on your Blue Swede Shoes for a night of non-stop love and rock ‘n roll at the Broadway Palm’s season opening hit musical All Shook Up in Mesa. The Prather family has done it again, bringing the East Valley another entertaining and electrifying regional premiere of the music and influence of “The King, Elvis Presley. From the opening scene of “Jailhouse Rock, the audience is placed back into another time when rock and roll ruled! It’s 1955, and somewhere in the Midwest, kids are falling in love and rockin’ to the charms of over 20 great hits from Elvis Presley. Directors Buddy Reeder and Marc Robin bring to life an ensemble cast that is perfectly suited to turn a small town upside down and make us all believe in love again. Their choreography was also fun and exciting for this love story’s presentation. A. Scott Williams and his orchestra didn’t miss a beat in keeping the hits rolling with this energetic cast of characters. You could feel the electricity and emotion this music brought to a generation that lives on, even now. J. Michael Zygo, as Chad, plays our tough guy and guitar playing hunk to the hilt with the girls all night, as he wooed and moved through “Follow That Dream,

“Teddy Bear,Hound Dog,Love Me Tender,Blue Suede Shoes, and “All Shook Up. April Monte, as Natalie and Chad’s newest best friend in disguise, Ed, was charming and unstoppable in “One Night with You, “Follow That Dream,Cmon Everybody, “Let Your Self Go, and “A Little Less conversation. Not to be forgotten in this night of romance, mistaken identities, and love triangles, is Chelsea Waller as Sylvia, who brought the house down in “There’s Always Me. Courtney Washington as Lorraine was cute and bubbly with Eric Keiser as Dean in the love song, “If I Can Dream. Ben Martin as Dennis is kind and touching in “It Hurts Me. Andy Kopec is a transformed dad as Jim in “The Power of My Love. And Hannah Zold is steamy and sexy in “Let Your Self Go and “Love Me Tender. All Shook Up’s ensemble of dancers and singers lit the house up during the hits “Cant Help Falling in Love, “Fools Fall In Love, “Burnin Love, and “It’s Now or Never. Their energy was top notch all night! This is a show that will have you toe tapping and humming all the way home! Dont miss it! Get your tickets now while Elvis is still in the house! According to Dr. Eduardo Pagàn, ASU Associate Professor of American Studies and History, “Phoenix began as a bilingual and bicultural town. The first schools were taught in English and Spanish and the first newspapers were bilingual. And people got along pretty well—Mexicans, Anglos, and Native Americans. But times have changed quite a bit and today there is a palpable sense of hostility directed towards the Spanish language and Mexicans culture. That is very regrettable, and quite unique among towns in the Southwest.” Gerardo Bru of Phoenix, who has been producing and directing stage presentations in the Valley since 1996 and in his native Mexico since 1974, is doing his part to narrow the palpable divide between the Spanish and English speaking cultures of Phoenix. In upcoming plays, ‘Grease’, and ‘Rosa de Dos Aromas’- as well as many other productions he puts on through Bru’s Theater- he accompanies the action on stage with supertitles in English using a projection screen. Amazingly, Bru’s prolific theatrical efforts are categorized as a hobby by this cultural connector. “I actually work in hotels,” he says chuckling. “I’ve been doing this for my whole life, so when I moved to the States, I started ‘Shout Out Phoenix’ in 1996. We performed in different venues, and I started a theatre group. The problem is that it’s hard to get space at venues because they are frequently occupied. I’ve been trying to find a venue since I’ve been here. That’s the whole idea right now; to find a venue and treat theater more as a business.” Bru presents plays in English with Spanish supertitles as well, frequently working with two casts for the same production, or allowing some of his bilingual performers to do repeat performances. “It can be a real challenge,” he says, “but all my plays; if I do it in English, I have Spanish on the screen, and vice versa. Most of them are musicals, but ‘Rosa de Dos Aromas’ will be the first one I have done

The Container Store Gives on its Grand Opening By Lindsey Kupfer Phoenix- The Container Store’s Grand Opening last month saw them donate $15,000 to a non-profit organization that helps build a stronger community. On September 13th and 14th, 10% of profits went to the Junior League of Phoenix, which started in 1933 and will soon be celebrating its 75th anniversary. The Container Store first opened in 1978 in Dallas, Texas. Their goal was to make people’s lives easier by giving them a way to organize everything from a closet to the kitchen. Their perspective is to help keep your life clean and make everything easily accessible. Some of the store’s products include shelves, racks, hangers and everything else to organize a house. One service that The Container Store offers is elfa©. Elfa© is a shelving and drawer system that can be measured out differently for everyone depending on where they want the system placed. MyStudio Launches at Fashion Square Mall

by Kelsey Raab Studio One Media, Inc. was proud to celebrate the opening of its first MyStudio video recording booth with over 1,700 guests at the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall recently. Attendees enjoyed complementary drinks and live entertainment by MyStudio members in the mall’s Palm Court as they patiently awaited the unveiling. MyStudio is a $300,000 state of the art, high definition audio and video recording studio that is specifically designed for placement in malls and other high traffic areas. It allows users to create videos of excellent quality for music, comedy, modeling, auditions, dating, personal greetings, and professional resumes. Consumers can not only record original compositions, but choose from thousands of famous and popular songs without potential copyright infringement. The MyStudio booth also provides over 1000 virtual high definition backdrops through the utilization of Hollywood green-screen technology. Each four-minute recording session costs $20 and the user will receive a DVD of the performance just a few minutes afterward. David Hernandez, an American Idol contestant who heard about MyStudio through President Larry Ryckman said, “The sound is unlike anything you’ve ever heard. It’s state of the art; the backgrounds are like actual music videos. Before, people would record these horrible videos in their living rooms. Now, for 20 bucks, you get optimum sound with whatever background you choose, and you get to perform.”

Aside from the mind-blowing technological aspects and 22 patents pending, MyStudio is unique in the way it is projected to revolutionize the October 9th - October 15th, 2008

entertainment industry. It is hoped that it will create a new means of discovering talent, aided by partnerships such as EMI Music Publishing and L.A. Models. “It’s going to fully impact the way people are discovered and cast,” said Billy Woodmansee, an original MyStudio member. “They can audition and minutes later agencies can see their stuff. It creates a middleman in between agents and or record labels, which is going to be awesome for people who don’t have the money to live in L.A.” Director of MyStudio’s comedy sector, Tony Vicich, said, “We’re bringing Hollywood to America. We’re giving people the opportunity to showcase their talent; it’s American Idol meets YouTube.” MyStudio will also be hosting contests throughout the year, the first being a modeling contest with partner L.A. Models. Supermodel Janice Dickinson commented on her personal affiliation with the contest and the benefits that MyStudio will provide for those aspiring to break into the modeling industry. “I want to give back to an industry that has given me so much,” she said. “I love Arizona and Fashion Square rocks. MyStudio is going to rock the planet because it’s going to give people what they need to get recognized and hopefully achieve their dreams.” The winner of the contest will receive a one-year contract with L.A. models, rentfree accommodations at the L.A. models apartment, and many other benefits needed to jumpstart a career in modeling. Combine all ingredients into a shaker, then strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. This taste of the islands (Japan is a series of islands) is similar to the Long Island Ice Tea, with Midori providing the only difference. Midori was actually launched in the US in 1978, but was developed by Suntory, a Japanese brewing and distilling company, thus the name. Perfect alongside a plate of sweet sea candy like sol, swordfish, or salmon, Tokyo Tea is a terrific taste sensation for home or vacation!

Can a Person Have Too Many Nice Cars?

If ‘Yes’, Funny Man Jay Leno is One of the Worst Offenders The Tonight Show host Jay Leno is a garish gear head if ever there was one. By Kinsey Schofield

www.achangeofpacemusic.com If asked to describe my early 20’s through a soundtrack, the first track on my mix is a song by Valley locals A Change of Pace, called “Weekend Warriors”. It reminds me of house parties that resulted in waking up with approximately 15 new numbers in my cell phone that belonged to mysterious young men with nicknames like “Hot Johnny”; chilly late night road trips to San Diego with my girlfriend Alyssa; and realizing that love is wasted on the young and that being irresponsible and carefree is short lived but oh so sweet. Categorized on Wikipedia as a “five piece sexy pop punk band” (literally, the word sexy is included); A Change of Pace consists of Jon Kelley (The Leader of The Pack), Johnny Abdullah (“The Sexy One” according to Kelley), Adam Rodgers (The Best Friend), Dan Parker (“The most musically inclined person I’ve ever been in a band with,” boasts Kelley… or “The Cute One”), and Micah Bentley (Newbie). A Change of Pace evolved from the garage band Girlfriend Impaired (aka GFI). “It was tight, google it,” jokes Kelley. Signed to Immortal Records at the hormonal age of 15, 23 year-old Kelley has found himself without a record deal for the first time in 8 years. So, why is he smiling? Kelley says he’s just thankful for the opportunity to play for the people that love their music and is excited to see what the addition of celebrated solo artist Bentley brings to the ACOP lineup.

Kinsey Schofield: Who is Micah Bentley to the Valley? Jon Kelley: I heard about him probably in 8th grade. He was skating semi-pro for Beyond Image among others. So, I knew him as a skater and one day someone shows me his Myspace where he’s uploaded a song… and it was really good! I was introduced to him and then we started to jam. I’ve always thought he was an incredible song writer and live performer. We’re very lucky because Micah is a very driven individual. He’s passionate about everything he does. KS: What kind of influence has he had on your newly released music? JK: This has been quite the debated topic. Some of the feedback we’ve received is ‘Oh my God, you guys used to be so much harder.’ I think people are putting it on Micah because he’s a new addition, when in reality, it’s the exact same music we were working with before. It’s Dan and Adam who have written all of it. ‘What happened to your screaming, what happened to your heavy stuff?’ We wrote” An Offer You Can’t Refuse” when I was 13 and 14 years old. That was so long ago! It’s Justin Timberlake: Mickey Mouse Club vs. Sexy Back. The changes you go through between 13 and 20 are ridiculous. KS: Explain your label situation, or lack thereof. JK: Prepare the Masses came out and there was a lot of interest. We were on an indie label and of course wanted to explore a major label. There was actually a point where we flew out to sign a deal with a major label, the owner of our indie label wasn’t satisfied with the situation, had different ideas and that ended up falling through. We were obviously pretty unhappy with the whole ordeal at

&

Profile: A Serious Change of Pace

that point because what they wanted was pretty unachievable. We tried to get out of that deal and do our own shopping, but that is when drama with our former lead singer started to go down, so our focus definitely shifted. Ironically soon after, our Indie shut down. So we have no label, a new lead singer; it’s literally starting over. This is the first time since I was 15 years old that I haven’t had a record deal. It’s scary but it’s also exciting. KS: You have an amazing online presence. Was that intentional, or is it just five guys having fun with their laptops? JK: We were one of the first bands that really utilized Myspace. We found it a perfect tool to introduce ourselves to new potential fans. I mean, it was back in the day when you could

like spam 500 kids a day and there was nothing holding you back. Within months we had like 25,000 friends, we were even one of the first bands to have the front page of Myspace.com. We were considered a ‘Myspace Band’ way before they had a record label or had established themselves in the music industry. KS: What’s in store for ACOP? JK: I just want to be happy and make music. Signed or not signed. I think a lot of people think we’re cocky or pompous, conceded. We’re so self aware and down to earth. We know exactly where we stand and we get it. As far as I’m concerned, any fan is a friend of ours. We appreciated everything and everyone that has happened to us. We’re going to bring it on the next record for sure.

Web Site for Band: www.pacificuv.com Where can folks see you perform? Funny you should ask! We’ll be at Phase 54 in Tempe on Saturday, October 18th. Why did this band get started? To fulfill the compulsion to create. pacificUV is one of the outlets we use as a response to this need. Life can get itchy if this need isn’t met. Do you play cover tunes or originals? All of our songs are originals. How would you describe your style of music? Our sound includes elements from a myriad of genres, but we most notably sound like a mix of space-rock, shoegaze, and dream-pop. It is all very atmospheric. We are frequently compared to bands like Spiritualized, Spacemen 3, Slowdive, Pink Floyd, and Mogwai in our press-reviews. Are you any good? The press seems to think so. Rolling Stone Magainze called the first pacificUV record “a masterpiece”. We have received glowing reviews for our latest record from such outlets as Spin Magazine, Alternative Press, Pitchfork, NPR, and boatloads of musicrelated internet sites. How would you classify your music? Music from Neptune. Who is the craziest band member and why? One of us has been arrested on tour. Apparently pacificUV and the state of Texas don’t get along. Nothing serious, really. It’s not like we drove a car into a swimming pool (a la Keith Moon). The incident was more akin to Bono’s spray-painting of the Valencourt AZWeeklyMagazine.com

fountain during U2’s Lovetown Tour. Odds are that we will have to bail someone out of the klink at least once on this tour. I hope Sheriff Joe goes easy on us if it happens in Arizona. Tell us a secret about the band: We all really love Hall & Oates. What advice would you give a startup band? Don’t settle for ANYTHING in your band (i.e. songs, members, recordings, etc.) being less than the absolute best it can possibly be. Compromise and art should not be mixed. There is so much mediocrity in music these days that people should avoid adding to that mediocrity at all costs. If you want to turn your art into a product, it should be worth people’s time and cash. It’s the only way to ensure you don’t get lost amongst the thousands of other bands out there. Music is a business, and if you don’t give people a reason to pay for your music, they won’t. What will people see when you perform live? Hopefully something beautiful and inspiring. If we can get people to forget about what is outside the walls of the club (if only for the duration of our set), we’ve done our job. Bands like U2 try to bring the strife of the world into the venue. We would rather give people a chance to escape from it for an evening. Got any CDs out that we might buy? There are two full-lengths and an EP available. We plan to re-release all of our music via limited-edition vinyl at some point during 2009. Where can folks find your CD’s or music? Almost anywhere, even the big-box stores like Wal-Mart and Target (though, we would rather you support your local brick & mortar record shop). iTunes is another option. If you don’t find it on the shelf somewhere, any music store can order it (we are distributed by Touch & Go). You can also purchase discs directly from our website or Myspace page. A Beverly Hills Chihuahua Goes to Mexico By: Randy Montgomery Jamie Lee Curtis plays a Beverly Hills socialite whose Chihuahua Chloe (voiced by Drew Barrymore) is as pampered as any highpowered celebrity. Chloe wears tailor made booties and brand-name outfits. She enjoys spa days and lounging on a raft in the pool. When her owner goes out of town on business, she is left with a ditzy niece, Rachel (Piper Perabo), who would rather party in Mexico than house-sit, so she packs up and heads south with her girlfriends and takes Chloe with her. Hungry and neglected, Chloe sneaks out of the hotel room in search of food. She ends up lost and in the hands of dog fighters who learn than Chloe is worth a lot of money. She escapes and with the help of homeless dogs across Mexico, begins a harrowing journey back to California. Disney’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua is quite funny at times, and features the voices

City of Ember For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights. Ember is a city built to last 200 years. The Builders left instructions to the mayors in a box that would open by itself. Unfortunately, one of the mayors was corrupt, and tossed the box into a closet, to be forgotten about for centuries…

the builders so long ago. Lina and Doon soon set out on an adventure when they discover the way out of Ember, but corrupt officials and a treacherous mayor stand against their wishes of saving the city. With courage and heart, they brave the darkness to help the citizens of Ember escape their dying home, and lead them to another world.

The year is 2041. Lina Mayfleet (Saoirse Ronan) and Doon Harrow (Harry Treadaway) are two children in Ember who find themselves on a mission to save their dying city. The lights are beginning to flicker, and the food supplies are running out. Ember’s once powerful generator is failing. Doon lands a job in the Pipeworks, to see if he can fix the generator. Lina’s job as a messenger finds her in over her head when she discovers the instructions left by

It may be a little scary for younger moviegoers, but should provide quite a few laughs, even though they are a tad stereotypical and repetitive. On a positive note, the special effects used to move the mouths of the animals are phenomenal and by far some of the best I have ever seen. The animals look as if they are really speaking! Dennis Quaid Brings “The Express” To Life Stan’s Pick of the Week The Duchess

(L to R) Ernie Davis (Rob Brown) receives a pep talk from Coach Ben Schwartzwalder (Dennis Quaid). Credit: Chuck Hodes

By Randy Montgomery In The Express, actor Dennis Quaid plays legendary Syracuse football coach Ben Schwartzwalder. The Express chronicles the life of Ernie Davis, the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy. Davis was chosen by Schwartzwalder to play for his team after spotting him playing at an upstate New York high school. Davis earned his status of one of the greatest football players in American history in the racially turbulent times of the late 1950’s and early 60’s, encountering racism at nearly every game. While his home state of New York was a little more accepting, having to travel to other parts of the country posed a challenge for him and other African American players. Despite the racism and segregation he encountered, Davis managed to leave his mark on history. The Express shows audiences the struggles Davis endured and how Coach Schwartzwalder helped him and the team overcome prejudices, despite being a product of those beliefs himself. Growing up in Texas, 54-year old Quaid remembers the time and prejudices that are presented in the film. “I grew up in Houston, and I remember separate restrooms, drinking fountains, and separate balconies in theatres,” says Quaid. “It was the way it was; it was unspoken. It was just the rules of society, the way they existed. My generation started to question that with the civil rights movement, which did a lot to change that when Martin Luther King Jr. came along.” The character Quaid plays holds some of those beliefs as well, despite recruiting Davis and making sure he was the

star player. “Schwartzwalder sort of represented that status quo in a way,” explains Quaid. “White America, by today’s standard, would be considered racist. That was the rules of society back then. What I really liked about the movie is that it deals with racism and segregation as it existed back then; it really does speak to where we are today and still where we have to go.” Ernie Davis was certainly a name that Quaid knew, but he learned many aspects of the story when making the movie: “I knew the name, but I didn’t really know the story. When I read the script is really the only time I get to be an audience member. It had a profound impact on me; it hit me hard, in a place where you really don’t have words. He (Davis) came along at a time before the Civil Rights movement began to bubble up. That may be one of the reasons why his story has been lost over time. He had a significant impact on the 60’s Civil Rights Movement.” Another football legend, and main reason why Ernie Davis agreed to play for Ben Schwartzwalder, was Jim Brown, a friend of Quaid’s. “He (Brown) told me about his relationship with Ben, which was contentious at times,” says the actor. “But he had a deep respect for the man, and told me the way it really was; his times there, the atmosphere.” Brown’s advice and old film clips helped the actor portray the coach true to life: “I feel a responsibility when I play a real person to capture their spirit and to play them honestly, not idealistically.” The Express opens in theatres nationwide on Friday, October 10, 2008.

Duchess Georgiana (Keira Knightley) was married off by her mother at 16 to William Cavendish (Ralph Fiennes), the fifth Duke of Devonshire, who loved his dogs more than the Duchess. His only use for her (or so it seemed) was to produce a male heir to the throne. An outspoken liberal, a supporter of the American and French revolutions, a campaigner for one Whig prime minister (Charles Fox), and her lover on the side (Charles Grey), Georgiana was a feminist who dared to speak publicly on politics, although she accepted that women did not have the vote. The Duchess was an extraordinary woman to endure the absolute control the Duke exerted. She disliked, but tactfully accepted, the duke’s numerous affairs. And her one and only close female friend, Lady Elizabeth Foster (Hayley Atwell), the Duke claims as his main mistress. Georgiana is enraged not only because of his infidelity, but for being robbed of her best friend. Later, coming to terms with the power the Duke can exert, she accepts Bess and her three

sons into their household, referring to William as “our husband.” This is not one of those delightful movies with the “Jane Austen novel” type happy ending. It is about the harsh realities of being a woman in a time in history when to merely speak out in a public forum just wasn’t done. As I left the screening, I thought, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, what an extraordinary woman. Starring Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Charlotte Rampling, Dominic Cooper, Hayley Atwell, and Simon McBurney. Directed by Saul Dibb. Paramount Vantage release; Rated PG-13 for sexual content, brief nudity and thematic materials. Runtime: 110 min.

Body of Lies

Leonardo DiCaprio has come a long way since Titanic. In Blood Diamond, he convinced us that he can bring depth to the characters he portrays. Russell Crowe continues to work within a broad range, which the recent 3:10 to Yuma starring Batman’s Christian Bale demonstrates. Based on Washington Post columnist David Ignatius’s 2007 novel about a CIA operative, Roger Ferris (DiCaprio) uncovers a lead on a major terrorist leader suspected to be operating out of Jordan. When Ferris devises a plan to infiltrate the terrorist’s leader’s network, he must first win the backing of cunning CIA veteran Ed Hoffman (Crowe) and the head of Jordanian intelligence. Squarely in the middle, Ferris questions how far he can really trust these men without putting his entire operation, and his own life, on the line. Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Mark Strong, Golshifteh Farahani, AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Appearing at the Tempe Improv October 9th-12th Web Site(s): www.donfriesen.com What was your “I think I’ve made itâ€? moment in comedy? Probably when I opened for the Counting Crows at the Delta center in Utah. It was a corporate gig, and there’s nothing like killing in front of 8000 techies. Or, better yet‌ The first time on national TV- The Martin Short Show-during my set I could hear laughs coming from the audience but was too nervous to gauge how well the set went over. As I walked backstage afterwards, a large man came lumbering up to me and extended his hand out for a shake. He said, “You were fantastic! I’m Bernie Brillstein.â€? He then turned to the agent who had booked me and said to her, “Where did you find this guy?â€? Then she turned to me and said, “The audience loved you, can you stay and do another set?â€? So I changed my shirt, and went back out and did another set. Fatherhood is a source of comedic material for you; how do you think your kids describe you to friends? Are you a ‘cool Dad’ or are you a ‘major hassle?’ Not to toot my horn, but I’m the fun dad. When they were younger, they thought I was the fun dad, because they didn’t perceive what I did as different from anyone else. When my son was 3 years old, someone asked him, “What does daddy do?â€? and he said, “Daddy falls down.â€? Your show is described as ‘highly physical’. What does this entail? And did you work your way up from ‘somewhat physical’, or has your presentation always been this way? Well, my act is very fast-paced and animated, with a lot of characters and act-outs. Initially when I first started, I wasn’t as physical, but then I became very physical. I currently like to blend the verbal and physical; mix up the pacing and energy to provide variety within an hour-plus long show. If I were president, the first thing I’d do as this country’s leader is ________: Make it illegal to charge for parking. Anytime, anywhere . List the 3 things that are “must haveâ€? items if you were stranded on a desert island (Your family, food, and water are all present): 1. WiFi; that’s a no-brainer. Better yet, an iPhone. 2. Board games (Especially Risk and Monopoly. I would finally have time to play). 3. Sensible shoes. Do comedians on sinking ships stay on stage telling jokes while everyone panics, like musicians, or are they at the front of the crowd waiting to get on the lifeboat? A. It depends on whether or not they’ve been paid yet B. They would probably set up a table on the Lido Deck, selling their DVDs as flotation devices. You do some great impressions of the Seinfeld characters; is Jerry Seinfeld your gold standard for a ‘successful’ comedian, or is there someone else you admire more in that regard? Seinfeld would be right up there, but I don’t think I could answer yes without including Chris Rock, Brian Regan, Steve Martin, or Bill Cosby. Would Barack Obama or John McCain be a better stand-up comedian? I’m going to have to go with McCain. Obama can pull off one-liners, but McCain has a dark sense of humor that can be very funny when it’s not downright mean. If I were in TV advertising, I would make commercials more __________ and less ____________: Mac, PC

Lopez Leads the Way in Youth Jam Get Together Story and Pictures By Victor P. Mariscal Pheonix- On February 15th, 2009, for the first time in 14 years, the US Airways Center - once known as America West Arena and currently the home of the Phoenix Suns - will be the host for the NBA All-Star Game. And the hype for this event has already begun. Recently, five men descended upon Phoenix Preparatory Academy with a message for the youth of Phoenix: Stay in shape!

some of the students and others present. The Gorilla and Lopez led the students in a workout, to stress how important it is to stay healthy and in the best shape possible. Born in Lakeport, CA, Lopez was already destined for a life in basketball at a young age, as his grandfather played at the University of Colorado. In college at Stanford, Lopez broke the freshman record for the most blocked shots at 73, and, combined with his twin

However, this is a situation that neither of them has encountered yet, so only time will tell how this will play out. Odds are, by the time the 2008-2009 season is over, everyone will remember the name of Robin Lopez. For more information on the NBA All-Star Game and the Phoenix Suns, go to www. nba.com.

ARIZONA SPORTS SCHEDULES

Aside from those at Phoenix Preparatory Academy, some other students from 10 or so local schools attended as well. The purpose of the program was to get kids to sign a pledge, declaring that they’ll stay healthy, active, and fit. Those who sign the pledge are in the 11-15 age range, and when they manage to complete the requirements, have a very good chance of attending the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam, to be held on Friday, February 13th. Up to 3,000 seats will be reserved for local students in participating districts who sign the pledge. The Rookie Challenge itself will pit standout first-year NBA players against seasoned second-year athletes.

The five men who arrived at the school were Suns’ play-by-play man Tom Leander, General Manager Steve Kerr, Athletic Trainer Erik Phillips, Phoenix Mercury Head Coach Corey Gaines, and the newest member of the Suns family, Center Robin Lopez. On June 26th, 2008, Lopez was drafted by the Phoenix Suns as the 15th overall pick. After that, he conducted a conference call with reporters, saying, among other things, “I was hoping I’d drop. I think I was the only person in the draft that was hoping he’d drop.” In a brief interview with AZ Weekly, Robin Lopez stated that one of the reasons why he was present for all those students is that he feels that they should get the same types of opportunities that he did as a child, also feeling that it’s important to stay in shape starting at a young age. Lopez feels very confident going into his first year as a pro player, and hopes to be involved in the Rookie Challenge as well. Families, organizations, businesses, schools, and individuals are invited to participate in Sharlot Hall Museum’s first “Day of the Dead (El Dia de Los Muertos) celebration by building altars to honor friends and relatives who have gone before. The free public event is set for Saturday, November 1st at 11am to 4pm, and includes awards for the best altars. The Day of the Dead began as an Aztec observance. It has evolved into a tradition throughout Mexico and the Southwest United States with family and friends gathering to honor and remember those who have died. The altars, both simple and elaborate, are an integral element of the celebration and typically honor a certain individual or family member. Altar applications and guidelines are available at the front desk of the Museum’s Lawler Exhibit Center at 415 W. Gurley St. The deadline for submitting an altar application is Friday, Oct. 24th. There is a limit of one altar per family or organization, and each altar must include a descriptive sheet with the title of the altar and a summary of what the altar represents. The altars, which will be no larger than 3 feet wide by 3 feet high by 2 feet deep, will be displayed on table tops on the Sharlot Hall Museum grounds from November 1st to November 8th.

The Day of the Dead activities start at 11am on November 1st at the Courthouse Plaza with a welcome and introduction from Sr. Carlo Fores Vizcarra, the Council General of Mexico in Phoenix. A reverent procession follows through downtown Prescott, gathering followers along the way and ending at Sharlot Hall Museum. At the Museum, visitors will learn more about the Day of the Dead in a presentation by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University professor Dr. Ricardo Carrera. The celebration continues on the Museum campus with Mariachi music, folkloric dancing, local Mexican oral histories, and delicious foods traditional to the holiday. Awards for the best altars will be presented at 2pm at the Museum.        Sharlot Hall Museum is partnering with the Sister City Association of Prescott, the Prescott Downtown Partnership and the Consulate General of Mexico in Phoenix to make this day possible. Day of the Dead posters, featuring colorful original artwork by Carlos Parra, are on sale in the Museum’s gift shop, Sharlot’s Timeless Treasures, on the Museum grounds. More information about this and other Sharlot Hall Museum events is available online at www.sharlot.org.

Hair, Hems, Slips, and Shoes! 9021O…Why Don’t You Eat Something

Let’s face it, the new 90210 is the best show in the world. It also manages to be the only show I talk back to, with phrases like “OH NO SHE DIDN’T!” and, “ARE YOU REALLY GOING TO LET HIM GET AWAY WITH THAT?!” Not everyone is as mesmerized as I am though by the desperate pop culture references or blatant product placements (Thank you T-Mobile and Dr. Pepper). Critics claim that stars Shenae Grimes and Jessica Stroup are far too skinny and are most likely dealing with eating disorders. Grimes responded to the rumors by telling Extra! that she’s just going to “Shake it off baby!”, while Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley suggests, “she eats a double cheeseburger or something,” and 90210 alum Tori Spelling, chimed in to say, “Once they start talking about you, false or true, then you’ve made it.” Welcome to Hollywood.

Rihanna: Good Girl Gone Gucci

Twenty year-old Rihanna was recently seen a stiletto away from the catwalk, front row at Gucci’s Fashion Show during Milan Fashion Week. My invitation was reportedly lost in the mail. Strongly considering suing SOMEBODY over the emotional stress this has caused me. As the newest face of the ultra posh label, Rihanna has kept busy with the fashion icon’s designers on codesigning one of the gowns that she will showcase in Gucci’s upcoming collection. 25% of the collection associated with Rihanna is given to the United Nation’s Children’s Fund. The campaign, entitled Tattoo Heart, can be found in magazines starting in December. “I felt a musician and a beautiful woman was the perfect icon for this campaign,” said Gucci’s creative director, Frida Giannini. It probably helps that Rihanna is seen in Gucci on nearly every red carpet she’s ever encountered.

Usher Takes On Granny Panties

Hip Hop & R&B sensation Usher Raymond (you know, the one with the abs and the beastly wifey), has taken on a new project that could get kind of… funky. (Funk-y [fuhng-kee] Adjective. 1. Having an offensive smell; evilsmelling; foul.) “I’m launching a lingerie line for men and women,” said the “Confessions” singer, who mentioned that “comfort” and “intimacy” would be on the agenda within the creative process. How does the wife feel about Usher fans around the world clamoring for his underpants? “Tameka doesn’t mind,” he said. “Being a sex symbol pays the bills. And she knows that.” This is entirely too weird for me. Britney or LiLohan coming out with an underwear line? Humorous and justifiable. Why do people like Usher or Janet Jackson think we want to purchase their delicates?! Now make sure to refer to your underpants as “delicates” for the rest of the week and tell me that it doesn’t make you cackle.

Ne-Yo’s Year Of The Gentleman held on at #3, while Kings Of Leon scored their best charting and sales week ever as Only By The Night debuted at #4 with 74,000.
