REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

STAN ROBINSON

COLUMNISTS

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With over 20 years of film and television production experience, Stan uses his behind-thescenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. RANDY MONTGOMERY

FILM! SECTION

ABOUT THE FILM

,

JOSEPH J. AIRDO

Randy Montgomery’s reactions reveal the emotional intuition of an average moviegoer. With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. E-mail him at Randyjay7694@yahoo.com.

HERB STRATFORD

Joseph J. Airdo’s remarks represent the analytical perspective. A producer of, and film columnist for, “Breakthrough Entertainment,” a talk radio show airing 9 a.m. to Noon Saturdays on KPHX 1480 AM that shines a spotlight on the practical perspectives of the topics and themes explored in movies. E-mail him at joseph. airdo@gmail.com.

Herb Stratford’s perspective on film is story first. Herb watches thousands of films a year as he programs the Napa Valley film fest in Napa, CA. Catch Herb on KVOI 1030 AM’s ‘Wake Up Tucson’ radio show every Friday morning at 7:30am, KVOA-TV (NBC), and KMSB-TV (Fox) every Thursday. Email him at Herb@ artsandcultureguy.com

‘22 Jump Street’ ~ More of the same, but the numerous laughout-loud moments and chemistry between Tatum and Hill make it worth it. Grade: B ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ ~ Sci-fi, action, humor and amazing special effects. Blunt is enjoyable as always and easily Cruise’s best film in a long time.Grade: B+

‘Only Lovers Left Alive’

‘They Came Together’

Tom Hiddleston plays a depressed musician who reunites with his lover (Tilda Swinton). However, their romance - which has already endured several centuries - is disrupted by the arrival of her uncontrollable younger sister (Mia Wasikowska). (R - 123 minutes)

Paul Rudd plays the owner of a corporate candy company who meets a quirky indie shop owner (Amy Poehler). They fall in love but break up about two-thirds of the way through and she starts dating her accountant. But then he makes a big speech and they get back together. (R - 83 minutes)

Joseph: Independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch may have wanted “Only Lovers Left Alive” to be his artistic answer to the “Twilight” phenomenon, but it is really just a cinematic sleeping pill. The romantic drama’s sloth-like story contains little more than stars Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton sipping blood as the plot progresses to a very unimpressive conclusion. Herb: Jim Jarmusch fans will appreciate how he has reinvented the vampire genre with this typical slow burn of a film. Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston are great but Mia Wasikowska steals the film for me. Dark, romantic and tragic—this one’s a keeper.

Herb: It would seem like a home run on paper, but Rudd and Poehler are wasted in this dumb send-up of bad rom-com films, once it hits the screen. Despite a few funny sight gags and unexpected celebrity cameos, this is 90 minutes I wish I had back.

‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ ~ Was not a huge fan of the first installment, but part two won me over with the impressive animation and heartwarming storyline. Grade: B+ ‘Jersey Boys’ ~ A well-made and enjoyable adaptation of a stage play that I particularly did not care for. Hollywood got this one right. Grade: B ‘Maleficent’ ~ Bad acting, strange script and so-so special effects add up to a somewhat enjoyable outcome. A different take on a familiar story. Grade: C‘Night Moves’ ~ There was a promising thriller buried in the script, but Reichardt when the artsy route and lost. Grade: C-

‘The Fault in Our Stars’ ~ Emotionally draining, but in a GOOD way. This is why you go to the movies, to feel every emotion. Woodley and Elgort shine. Grade: A+ ‘Think Like A Man Too’ ~ Surprisingly unfunny and predictable. Can someone please stop Kevin Hart from making more movies? Grade: C-

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actress Nicola Peltz (‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I grew up being a big fan of ‘Transformers.’ So when I found out that they were casting a girl around my age, I was really excited. Then to find out that I would get be a part of it was just so exciting. I play Tessa. I loved playing her. She is a strong girl. She grew up on a farm in Texas with her single dad. She is the adult in the

relationship. He is more of a dreamer. “I definitely have my scenes with [the Autobots and Decepticons]. That was really fun because you get to use your imagination. Sometimes you are talking to absolutely nothing but you just have to go for it. [Director Michael Bay and my co-star Mark Wahlberg]

kept saying, ‘Just totally go for it. Let go. If you believe it, other people will believe it.’ I just saw the movie for the first time yesterday and that was really exciting for me. “There are definitely messages in this film. This one has such a beautiful human element to it. At the end of the

day, family is most important. And it should be most important. And this movie definitely makes that clear. Tessa is a really strong girl. She gets separated from her dad and it’s really terrifying for her. I am so close to my dad and I couldn’t imagine being separated like that from my family.” - Nicola Peltz

“Real Steel” (2011): A computer-generated, boxing robot could steal a movie from anyone, but it’s to the credit of Jackman’s heartfelt performance as a struggling promoter that it doesn’t.

“Australia” (2008): Good-looking as it is, this drama doesn’t achieve the epic sweep it aims for, but Jackman ably fulfills his mission to play a hunky ranch hand.

“Deception” (2008): Jackman gives an enjoyably sly performance as a bon vivant with ulterior motives for drawing a bookish auditor (Ewan McGregor) into his world.

Santa Cruzin’ in Tucson, AZ ‘The Loop’ bike path in Tucson is one of the coolest things about our bike-friendly city, one could even say it is almost more advanced than our interstate. You can make it across nearly any part of the city in less than an hour cutting over and dodging under bridges while following the serene arroyos of Tucson. The Santa Cruz River path is most useful to commuters between the Southwest and Northwest sides of town with easy access to downtown excitement and connects us to the Rillito Riverand Barraza-Aviation bikeways. Santa Cruz path is a peaceful 9.5 mile ridefrom beginning to end with majestic views of the Tucson Mountains and many great surprises along the way. Among other points of interest there is a bike shop, disc golf course (between Speedway and Grant) and some luscious, green water reservoirs which were full of plants and animals.

‘The Loop Bicycle Shop’ was a fun and much needed encounter on my ride as I was riding with a creaky and broken saddle.
