MIM will celebrate the diversity of world musical cultures through audio and video enabled exhibitions and concerts in its 299-seat Music Theater. Warthogs originate in sub-Sahara Africa and are named for their sizable facial warts. These fleshy growths are much more pronounced on the males because they serve as a protective padding during sparring matches with other males. The species likes to dig in the soil for food and shelter. Like other pigs, warthogs have sturdy snouts made from a ring of cartilage that is supported by a small bone not present in other mammals. This allows them to use their snout like a “bulldozer” while foraging for food. Plus, like no other species of pig, the warthog is specially adapted for grazing. It kneels on unique wrist pads to feed on grasses and roots. Several spring month old warthogs are on display in the Wildlife World Baby Animal Nursery.

The story, set in 1999, unfolds in a series of flashbacks starting in June of 1974. Federal justice agent Benjamín Espósito (Ricardo Darín) in Argentina has serious doubts during the investigation of a young woman who’s brutally raped and murdered in her home in a Buenos Aires neighborhood. His assistant is a ‘closet’ alcoholic who simply wants to have the case end so that his life can go back to the simple every day pace of police work. His assistant sees an easy way to put the case to rest when a newcomer and upper class lawyer takes over as department head. Two immigrant workers seem the likely suspects on the surface, and the assistant playing on the naïveté of the new chief, puts the matter to rest with the workers being charged. And that’s how it sets, for twenty-five years, until Espósito retires. The case has haunted Espósito throughout the years and in retirement he decides to write a book on the case. “It Came From Kuchar”… the Director, Not a Distant Planet

By Randy Montgomery George Kuchar has made over 200 films, many with his twin brother Mike. Whether they are paternal or fraternal is still up for debate. They claim they do not know themselves. Despite a long list of credits on IMDB, more than likely, you have never seen any of them. Wikipedia says their films are “‘low-fi’ aesthetic, playful use of no-talent actors,” and have “plotless” plots, and theme-less themes.” The brothers; George and Mike began making films in the mid 1950’s and have not stopped since. The new indie documentary It Came From Kuchar screened to rave reviews at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin and introduces uninformed audiences to the work of these two gentlemen. Freddy’s Coming For You… A Nightmare on Elm Street Reimagined When you think horror films; three names come to mind; Michael Meyers, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger. Freddy doesn’t win the battle of how many sequels can be made in a franchise, but he is definitely one of the undisputed champs. In 1984, moviegoers were introduced to the psychopath that haunted teenagers in their dreams. “One, two, Freddy’s coming for you…” Yeah, when Freddy appears in your dreams, it’s almost certain that you will die in real life. The premise is the brainchild of Wes Craven and starred Robert Englund. Craven celebrated the film’s 10 Year Anniversary with Wes Craven’s New Nightmare in 1994. Sixteen years later, Producer Michael Bay and Director Samuel Bayer bring the notorious killer back to theatres in a re-imagined form. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) was not screened in time for review. The trailer looks promising. Let’s hope Bayer and Bay do not do to Freddy what Rob Zombie did to Michael S N Meyers. A P I T

McDuffys Grille Chandler opened its doors in October 2007, at the NW corner of Pecos & McQueen. Located just a mile north of the San Tan Loop 202 Freeway McQueen exit, it is easily accessible to everyone living in the SE valley “202 Corridor” area. The Proprietor, Scott Adams, and managers Nickole Swindle and Joe Merenda all worked at the re-known McDuffys Sportsbar in Tempe. They are quick to point out this new incarnation is a more laid back, food oriented hang out, with a slogan of “Eat, Drink, & Relax”, and offer guests a variety of options for doing just that. For the ‘Food’, the offering is fairly extensive. Appetizers range from traditional sports bar finger fare such as delicious Buffalo Wings, Handmade Onion Rings & Hand Cut French Fries, and BBQ Sliders; to Southwest favorites like Baja Shrimp Martinis, Mini-Chimis, Hand Rolled Taquitos, & Calamari. There is a large selection of fresh salads and the ‘Best Burgers in Town’ that can be cooked to order. The Blue Cheese Burger served with gorgonzola bleu cheese and whiskey carmelized onions has quite the following. There are also popular sandwiches like the Famous Grilled Clubhouse & Pastrami Hoagie and Tailgate favorites such as the Pecos Mac’n Cheese dinner, Teriyaki Steak Skewers, and the Chipotle BBQ Chicken, which is served with Honey cured bacon, sharp cheddar cheese and chipotle BBQ sauce. Ibanez’s on-base percentage is reasonable (.339), but he’s not hitting (.196 average) and thus not driving in many runs (six). The dropoff in production is significant, as the top three slot in the Phillies’ lineup have all scored 15 runs each, while their sixth through eighth hitters have scored 15 runs total.

Smart move (so far) not to move Francisco Liriano to the bullpen: The left-hander is recapturing some of the unhittable stuff during his 2006 rookie season. Capped by eight scoreless innings on Wednesday, Liriano has thrown 21 innings in three starts had gone 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 17 strikeouts. Without him pitching to this high level, the Twins appeared to have a five-man rotation full of guys with third-starter talent. With Liriano at his best, suddenly that staff is a lot more fierce with a 1-3-33-3 lineup.

BEER! Cinco de Mayo By Chuck Noll

First off, are we all clear that Cinco de Mayo is not the Mexican Independence Day? Okay, great. That day is celebrated on September 16th and commemorates the call for separation from Spanish Rule. Cinco de Mayo is more of a regional event commemorating the Mexican army’s upset victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 15, 1862. The holiday is fairly minor in most of Mexico, with the obvious exception of Puebla. It isn’t even considered an obligatory federal holiday, just a voluntary one.

So, how did Cinco (we are on a first name basis) become such a big deal in the USA? For whatever reason, the Mexican community in California celebrated the victory starting in 1863 and the observance has pretty much been continuous ever since. Like many trends, Cinco celebrations spread from California to other states and developed in to a cultural celebration, much like St. Patrick’s Day, Chinese New Year and Oktoberfest have become in this country. Communities with larger Mexican populations embraced the day more than others, which explains why Arizona has embraced the day so strongly. It does not, however, explain why Birmingham Alabama, which has a Mexican population so small it is included in the category “other ethnic groups”, makes such a big deal out of the day.

We’ve gone two paragraphs without once mentioning beer, well that’s about to change. Because Mexican beer has become such a big part of our culture, it’s only natural that these beers take center stage for Cinco. There are some domestic beers produced in an effort to replicate Mexican styles, but why drink a pretender when you can have the real thing? There are two major Mexican brewing companies, Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma and Grupo Modelo. The latter, as you might suspect, are responsible for the two Modelo beers, Especial and Negra. The Especial is a tasty pale lager produced in the style of most Mexican beers. Negra Modelo is thought by most Americans to be the best of the beers from south of the border. It is a dark Vienna Lager style beer brewed in the German tradition. It has a little more body and

flavor than most Mexican beers, so it brings a different drinking experience. Modelo also makes Pacifico and a small brand called Corona. Corona is a phenomenon unto itself. First produced in 1925, it has become the number one Mexican beer in the world. It is also one of the top ten selling beers of any kind. Available in bottles only because they feel that “the best taste experience and maximum enjoyment comes from the glass bottle”, they have foregone a draft product. There are also some beers made by Modelo that are available only in Mexico, Victoria and León come to mind. Keep an eye out for these if you are vacationing in Mexico. Moctezuma has the other well known Mexican beers, the most popular of which are the Dos Equis brands. The Special Continued on Page 31...

Lager is a Mexican style Pale Lager and Amber is a Vienna Lager, a little different than the Negra Modelo, but the same basic style. However the original beer from this brewery was Carta Blanca which was taken from the French, “Carte Blanche”, meaning blank check. Other beers from this brewery include Sol, Tecate and Bohemia. Bohemia is a European style pilsner brewed in the Czech tradition. Tecate is sometimes credited with starting the habit of putting a lime in Mexican beers. It seems they had a brewmaster of Scottish descent and adopted the tradition from Great Britain of providing sailors a lime with their daily beer ration to help prevent scurvy. And, we would be remiss if we didn’t remind you that Dos Equis does employ, The Most Interesting Man in the World. Stay thirsty, my friends! Where do you find all these beers on Cinco? Well just about any Mexican restaurant is going to have something going on, but some of the bigger events will be taking place at the Sandbars in Scottsdale, Peoria and Chandler; Barrio Cantina, Eva’s in Casa Grande, Arribas, Dos Gringos and Macayo’s. You can also look for fun times at Salty Senorita, Valle Luna, Top Shelf and Fuego Bar and Grill in Tolleson. Devil’s Advocate in Tempe and Kiley’s Grill in Chandler will also have events. Much like St. Patrick’s Day, many of these events start as early as noon and will be in full

stride as the work day ends. Get there early as there may be lines at many locations later in the evening.

Cinco is celebrated at more than just Mexican places. Cody’s in Cave Creek is planning a major event and is putting together what they say is the world’s largest piñata. If you have been looking for an excuse to get to Cave Creek, this could be it. Mill Street in Tempe will host several events at non-Mexican bars as well. Most of the time, this column is about craft beers, but Cinco is one of those holidays that demand a break from tradition. If you’re a craft beer drinker, just embrace the spirit for one day, and enjoy a Corona or Tecate. If you have to have a craft beer, then there is only one choice. The only Mexican craft brewery available in Arizona is Cucapa which comes from Mexicali. With several flavors including the Chupacabras Pale Ale, named after the mythical, or not so mythical, Goat Sucker, a Yeti like beast that is blamed for livestock deaths across the Americas. You can find Cucapa at the Yard House, Blanco Tacos and Tequila, Old Chicago Mesa, and Los Sombreros to name a few. Enjoy Cinco de Mayo, responsibly of course, and relax with some enjoyable Mexican beer. Don’t worry about what food you are pairing it with. Cinco is about friends and fun, and celebrating the Mexican culture. At least that’s my plan.

Big Brew 2010 Saturday, May 1st will celebrate National Homebrew Day with the Big Brew!! Grammy-nominated hard rock band Disturbed are in the studio putting the finishing touches on a new album, entitled Asylum. The release is the follow-up to their 2008 platinum album Indestructible, which spawned the Active Rock smash single “Inside the Fire.” Asylum will be released by Reprise Records in late summer. As with Indestructible, Disturbed are self-producing Asylum, which they began writing in September 2009 and recording in February of this year. Front man David Draiman describes it as “still identifiably Disturbed, but showing more maturation. We feel this is one of the strongest bodies of work we’ve ever put together. It definitely goes in familiar areas, but with new levels of precision and skill.” Lyrically, Draiman says, the themes “range from very personal and introspective, to the political and provocative. What would you expect? No songs about puppy dogs or rainbows here.” “We want this record to be a shining example of how the years have made
