BARRETT-JACKSON REVVING UP FOR 43RD ANNUAL SCOTTSDALE AUCTION JAN. 12-19, 2014 The Auction Every year, more than 250,000 flock to Westworld for one unforgettable event. They feed off the energy of the auction block. They realize lifelong dreams. They lounge in The Garage. They bring their kids, and their kids’ kids. They peruse the incredible displays. They buy automobilia and memorabilia – and generate nostalgia. They have a few drinks, enjoy a few dishes and spend a day…or week…enjoying all that the unparalleled Arizona auction has to offer. A time-honored tradition for more than four decades, Barrett-Jackson attracts more than 250,000 visitors annually, commands more than 100 hours of live television coverage on the FOX family of networks, drives nearly $100 million into the local economy (not including automobile sales) and has raised nearly $60 million dollars for local and national charities.

Coverage of this special tribute to Americana can be seen from 1-3 p.m. MST on the FOX Broadcast, with traditional Salon Collection coverage from 5-7 p.m. MST on National Geographic Channel. In addition to the Salon Collection, the highly-anticipated iconic Hot Wheels Yellow and Red Haulers and the ‘Cuda and Duster Funny Cars raced by legendary drag racers Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen will make their way to the Barrett-Jackson block after just finishing a national tour. These historic cars signify the unique and inspiring story of how two highly competitive Southern California drag racers revolutionized America’s fastest growing sport, with Prudhomme and McEwen putting both Hot Wheels and drag racing on the map through a legendary deal with Mattel in 1969. The deal signified the

Next up is the Opening Night Gala held Monday, Jan. 13, featuring a special performance by rock legend Bret Michaels, an appearance by Billy Baldwin and a chance for attendees to bid on a once-in-a-lifetime ticket package for Super Bowl 2015. The winning bidder will receive two premium seats at Super Bowl XLIX, two tickets to the top NFL Super Bowl parties and two passes to the NFL Honors television broadcast. They’ll also gain backstage access at the broadcast, and airfare and hotel accommodations for two when the big game makes its return to the Grand Canyon State in February, 2015.

And it’s revving up for its winter return to Scottsdale, the city that started it all. From Jan. 12 – 19, 2014, hundreds of thousands of collectors and spectators from across the globe will participate in the world-class automotive lifestyle event, witnessing nearly 1,400 classics, exotics, muscle cars, Hot Rods, Resto-Mods and contemporary collectibles cross the auction block at No Reserve. And this year’s event is bigger than ever before, thanks to the all-new facility at WestWorld that doubles the main building’s size and expands the event’s total footprint to nearly 1 million square feet. The 2014 auction will showcase the return of the company’s coveted Salon Collection, home to some of the world’s rarest and most sought-after vehicles. LEONARDO DA VINCI: MAN / INVENTOR / GENIUS and machines from the four codices: flight, civil machines, hydraulics and engineering and military machines. The craftsmanship and beauty of the materials used by da Vinci are represented just as they were in the 15th century. The exhibition (January through April 2014), includes interactive computer stations, an educational time room, theatre room and music composed

Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest geniuses the world has ever known. More than five hundred years ago, he designed flying machines, robots, submarines, underwater breathing gear, solar powered industries and laid most of the groundwork for the artificial heart valve. With little formal education, his brilliance lay in his ability to master different subjects and fuse them

Toy Tournament BIGGEST EVER! By Phil Scudella It’s a RECORD! This year’s Christmas Toy Drive Poker Tournament at The Arena Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort shattered all previous turnouts! Poker players have hearts and they showed up in unbelievable numbers this year to help this great cause. Say what you want about men and women that play poker – one thing is for sure, they show up for these charity events. This year’s 11th Annual Christmas Toy Drive No-Limit Hold-Em Poker Tournament on Saturday December 21th drew a record 490 entrants! Poker players had a chance to help a child receive a present under the Christmas tree this year. In some cases - it may be the only present that child will receive. The buy-in was just one new unwrapped toy valued at $10 that was donated to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Christmas Toy Drive plus a $25 service fee. Such a small entry fee for a $12,500 Guaranteed Prize Pool!

This special event paid 41 places. 21st thru 41st received $50, 11th thru 20th took home $100 – Tenth place paid $250 and went to Eric Doyle. There was a special “Chop” whereas the top 9 were guaranteed $ 957 each – So the next 5 players out got that prize money, and they were; Adam Williamson, Jason Miller, Teresa Boothe, Michael Bedford and Francine LeRoy. The final 4 wanted to stop play and agreed to an even “Chop” of $1,353 each – Those players were; Jack Wagner, Chris Cotty, Mary Jordan and Andrew Abela

The Final Table - left to right: Standing: Michael Bedford, Jason Miller, Mary Jordan, Andrew Abela, Eric Doyle and Francine LeRoy

Tournament Winners; Jack, Chris, Andrew and Mary - And behind the winners, Tournament coordinator - Steve Briquelet

This was an unbelievably well run tournament when you consider tournament coordinators Steve Briquelet and Lori Whittaker were breaking 2 tables at a time throughout the first two to three hours of this event. What an outstanding job these two did in running this tournament without a hitch! All those players I talked to were looking forward to playing again next year. The Arena Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort is located at the Loop, 101 and Indian Bend Road in Scottsdale. For more information call 480-850-7777

‘The Last Days on Mars’ Liev Schreiber plays one of several astronauts who, on the last day of the first manned mission to Mars, succumb one by one to a mysterious and terrifying force. (R - 91 minutes) Joseph: “The Last Days on Mars” can be whittled down to a threeword synopsis: Zombies on Mars. It is simple, straightforward and stretched-out. Granted, scientific mutterings may make naive viewers to believe that there is more to the movie than meets the eye but most will merely be annoyed. And almost everyone is certain to become bored with the by-the-books trajectory of the tale.

‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’

Randy: The passing of Nelson Mandela makes watching Idris Alba’s performance even more haunting. Delivering one of the finest performances of the year, Alba is deserving of praise, but may be overlooked in this busy movie season by actors in larger films. Performance aside, the film itself does not live up to Alba’s performance, which may hinder his nomination chances a bit more. Joseph: Sadly, as good intentioned as it is, “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” will feel like precisely that to most moviegoers - a long walk to freedom... from what is essentially a dry and dutiful history lesson. It is not particularly entertaining nor is its educational value very effective as viewers who do not already know the ins and outs of the story may find themselves lost along the trail.

Idris Elba portrays South African President Nelson Mandela who spends 27 years in prison before becoming president and working to rebuild the country’s once segregated society. (PG-13 - 152 minutes) Stan: English actor Idris Elba, delivering a stunning portrait of a world renowned figure many of us really know very little about save for the usual news bites and press coverage spanning 30 years, catapults what could have been the usual docu-drama to an insightful

“The Hunger Games” (2012): Cast well,

as usual, Tucci is sterling as the host of a television show connected to the teen survival contest. “Margin Call” (2011): Tucci is perfect to play the first victim of a financial institution’s meltdown at the cusp of the economic crisis. “Burlesque” (2010): In a literally well-suited part, Tucci plays the man who outfits the dancers at a Los Angeles club with the title approach. “The Lovely Bones” (2009): A thoroughly unsettling Tucci earned the film’s sole Oscar nomination in the adaptation of Alice Sebold’s best-seller about the aftermath of a girl’s murder.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Voice Actor John DiMaggio (‘I Know That Voice’) By Joseph J. Airdo

John DiMaggio served as executive producer of the new documentary “I Know That Voice.” His voice acting credits include Bender Bending Rodriguez on “Futurama” as well as Rico the penguin in the “Madagascar” movies, Jake on “Adventure Time” and Dr. Drakken on “Kim Possible” among many others. “I just really wanted it to be like I am the Wizard of Oz and I am pulling the curtain back to give a peek at what we do. People

always ask, ‘What’s it like? How does your job work?’ I want people come away [from this movie saying], ‘Wow! Now I get it! Now I understand! Now all of those questions I had about the industry are answered!’ “And I want people to come away from it with a sense of joy. Cartoons touch people’s lives from day one. I think that this film appeals to people from 1 to 92 - or at least anyone who is old enough to be conscious of, ‘Wow! This is how they

make cartoons!’ I mean, if you don’t like cartoons, there is something that is kind of wrong with you. “Cartoons are usually our first form of entertainment so they stick with us. And now with the proliferation of adult-themed cartoons, anything goes. The world of animation is open to so many and I think that that really says something about the genre. So I am just really excited to have people watch [this film].” - John DiMaggio

Behind-the-Scenes – ‘Grudge Match’ By Stan Robinson Hart is also appearing in the upcoming movie ‘Ride Along’ starring Ice Cube in 2014.

only as old as you feel’ as the film takes us on a fun ride.

Remembering the classic boxing movies that both actors starred, Robert De Niro in ‘Raging Bull’ (1980) and Sylvester Stallone in the first ‘Rocky’ film in 1976, and the fact De Niro is 3 years older than I am while Stallone and I are the same age at 67 years old, ‘Grudge Match’ breath’s new life into the familiar adage ‘You’re

In ‘Grudge Match’, Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone play a pair of aging boxing rivals who are coaxed out of retirement by Dante Slate, Jr. to fight one final bout - 30 years after their last match. (PG-13 - 113 minutes) Kevin Hart, a very recognizable face from television, in perhaps what will be called his breakout role, portrays the role of Dante Slate, Jr., the fast talking up and coming entrepreneur who conceives the idea of a ‘Grudge Match’ between the two aging boxers. PRISONERS

9 p.m. on HBO

A big image shift for Hugh Jackman is a highlight of this intense 2013 melodrama. After his young daughter and a friend vanish, a likely suspect (Paul Dano) is released from police custody for lack of evidence ... prompting the desperate dad to conduct his own brand of interrogation. Jake Gyllenhaal also does solid work as a detective trying to solve the case. The strong cast boasts Maria Bello, Viola Davis, Terrence Howard and Melissa Leo as well.

One couple — a zombie and a human, played by Nicholas Hoult (“Jack the Giant Slayer”) and Teresa Palmer — could be the key to saving the world from a rampage of the undead in this satire of a genre, played unusually straight for something of its nature.

THE WRONG WOMAN 9 p.m. on LIFE A wife and mother finds her life turned upside down when she’s arrested for attempted murder. The police have plenty of evidence against her, including the fact that the victim was having an affair with her husband — who’s also starting to suspect she’s guilty.

ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US

Chicago State at Creighton.

It’s probably no surprise that this 2013 documentary about the popular boy band is a favorable profile, but the surprise is in who made it: Morgan Spurlock, who showed a knack for exposes with “Super Size Me” and continues to in his series “Inside Man.” He does get telling comments from the singers’ relatives; one likens fame and touring to being spirited away by aliens. Simon Cowell — largely responsible for the group’s formation — also is interviewed.

READY FOR THE NEW YEAR Stay in shape through the Holidays with 5 simple exercises By Samuel Colby As an exercise and post-rehab specialist, I am always asked: “What can I do to avoid packing on weight during the holidays?” Most people eat too much and exercise too little during the holidays, and then reset their hard drive on January 1. But you don’t have to wait; get a head start now. Like anything and everything, it takes time, hard work and dedication. The human body is made up of opposing forces (for every push there is a pull); therefore, I recommend you train on a regular basis. I picked 5 things that an average Joe can do to before setting your New Year’s Resolutions: 1. Pushups — strengthens and tones chest, shoulders and triceps 2. Pull-ups — strengthens and tones back and biceps 3. Abdominal pikes — strengthens and firms the abdominals 4. Low back hyperextensions —

strengthens and tones the low back region 5. Alternating lunges with weights (tones and strengthens the entire lower body) In addition to doing these 5 simple exercises, drink plenty of water (half your body weight in ounces). I also recommend doing at least 20 minutes of cardio, keeping your heart rate in the fat-burning zone: 220 - (age x 0.70). And as always, eat plenty of veggies and lean meats, keeping your calories within your ideal metabolic range (your weight x 12). And if you find yourself snacking on holiday goodies, do so in moderation. For more information, contact Samuel Colby at www. exercisesos.com. Stephen Covey said, “If we keep doing what we were doing, we’re going to keep getting what we were getting.” Brian Tracey wrote, “The more you do of what you’re doing, the more you get of what you got.” Well, I guess what they’re both saying is, if you want to get a different result, you have to do something different first, In other words…..change. Uhmmm, change is scary. Change is frightening. We often fear change because we think we will be worse off as a result of the change than we were before the change. (BOSS STATEMENT) Yet change of all kinds is inevitable. But, you can ensure that change will always be for the better if you control the direct of change rather than allowing change to control you. Question, what happens to water at 211 degrees Fahrenheit? Well, not much really. It gets hot and many have a few small pinpoint bubbles, but for the most part it just lays there in the pot. But, just add one more degree and the same water begins to boil. This is an increase in heat of less than one-half of the percent. But look at the change

it generates. Peter Vidmar, the great American gymnast said, that in the 1984 Olympics he missed winning a silver medal by 25 one thousandths of a point, a difference half as great as the differences between hot water and steam. The great racehorse, John Henry, won all of his races over a tenyear span and also won over seven million dollars for his owners. His nearest competitor over the same span finished second and won only 600 thousand dollars for his owners…even though he lost by an average of only 3 tenths of a second per race. This point? Well, it should be jumping out at you by now, in order to make BIG changes in yourself, you don’t have to change anything big. Look to make a small change, big changes are intimidating, scary. I don’t know about you, but I feel I can handle something small. Small changes make big differences. And one more thing you can do to take control of change, institute change when things are going well. Some people say, “If it’s not broke don’t fix it.” If you wait till it’s broke to fix it so much is lost during the down time, you lose your momentum, your focus. Things are so much easier to change when they’re not broke. That’s why I say, “You don’t have to be sick to get better.” -Mack Newton Mack Newton is an 8th Degree Black Belt, Senior Master Instructor, Global Tae Kwon-Do Federation International and Chairman of the World Technical Committee

BEER! SECTION

...CONTINUED FROM 48 The answers: 1.

Pilsen, home to Pilsner Urquell (Original Pilsner) is the first city that this common style of beer was brewed

2. Labatt first sold Ice beer in 1993 3. The term for the science of converting malt, hops, water and yeast to beer is called Zymurgy, from the Greek term “Zumu” meaning “To Leaven” 4. Weihenstephan was opened in the Bavaria region of Germany in 1040 by a Benedictine order of monks. Now state owned, it runs one of the most respected brewing schools in the world. 5. The term wort comes from the Old English “Wyrt” and is used as a suffix to describe plants and herbs that have medicinal value. 6. AB InBev have decided to reduce the ABV on Budweiser, Becks and Stella

Artois sold in the United Kingdom from 5% to 4.8%, according to The Grocer , a trade magazine. The Grocer further goes on to say that this move would save them 8.6 million pounds (about 13.4 million US dollars) annually on the Stella Artois brand alone. 7. While all of these breweries make outstanding beers, it is the Trappist beers of Westvletern that are widely prized. The only way to purchase them (through fully legal channels) is to make an appointment at the brewery and arrive to pick up as many as two cases of whichever beer they are selling on that particular day. It sometimes takes hours to get through to the brewery and sales are limited to whatever quantities are expected to be on hand that particular day. On the grey market, bottles of Westvletern 12 have been known to go for over $40 for an 11.2 oz package. 8. Dale’s Pale Ale was the very first craft beer in a can, and still one of the finest available.

9. Lambics are a Belgian beer made brewed by spontaneous fermentation… they natural yeasts and bacteria found in the air are used for the fermentation process. Lambics are often done in koelschips in Belgium to this day. Cantillon and DrieFonteinen are classic examples. The yeasts and bacteria are now found to be a part of the breweries themselves in larger numbers more than anything floating free in the air of the Senne Valley. These strains are cultivated and pitched in barrels or separate fermenters (and, preferably, buildings! Wild yeasts can be very infectious when you don’t want them to be.) by many modern brewers without the need of the open air. 10. There are 1984 ounces of beer in a standard 15.5 half barrel of beer. This equates to approximately 6.88 cases. 11. Molson brewing in Montreal opened in 1786, Yuengling in Pottsville is the oldest American brewery having opened in 1829. It is also the largest American owned brewery. 12. Philadelphia has the richest brewing traditions. Its first

brewery opened in 1885 and by 1890 over 95 breweries operated there. It is widely believed that the US Marines were formed in Philadelphia at the originalTun Tavern. 13. The Babylonian people were credited with brewing beer over 4,000 years ago. Almost every civilized society in the world has brewed some sort of beer. 14. Due to their dwindling supplies the pilgrims aboard the Mayflower had to abandon their plans to arrive at Jamestown, Virginia and instead landed at Plymouth Rock. 15. The brew got its name the same year when Dutchman and brewer Gerard Adrian Heineken bought the 272-year-old De Hooiberg brewery. So how did you do? Some of these questions were pretty difficult so if you answered them all correctly, you know a lot more about beer than the average person. No matter how many you got right, go ahead and reward yourself for your efforts with a fine beer from one of our many outstanding beer bars in Arizona.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

WINE! SECTION

A TOAST TO THE NEW YEAR CHOOSE THE RIGHT WHITE OR RED AND HAVE YOUR GUESTS TICKLED PINK

Whites Muscadet from France. From the Loire Valley of France, it is always a crowd-pleaser. It’s made to be drunk young and has juicy tastes of tropical fruits and melons on a foundation of minerals, which lends it a pleasant tartness. It’s clean and refreshing. Plus, Muscadet is often drier and has less alcohol than many whites these days. The words “sur lie” on the label indicate that the wine stayed in contact with its sediment for a while, which gives it extra body and complexity. Good names to look for include Domaine de la Quilla (Daniel et Gérard Vinet), Château de la Chesnaie, Château du Cléray (Sauvion) and Marquis de Goulaine. Like all of the whites in this list, get the youngest you see.

1-800-712-4514 Call Us Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm PST.

Pinot Grigio from Italy. Don’t sneer. Good Pinot Grigio is a delight. Too much Pinot Grigio tastes like lemon water, but when it’s right, this wine has ripe fruit, lively acids, earth and minerals and it can be soulful. If you get one of these, plan to buy plenty. Good names to look for: Alois Lageder, Tiefenbrunner, and Kris from Franz Haas. Others include Zenato, Placido, and Folonari. This grape hits its heights in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia and TrentinoAlto Adige regions, so look for that on labels.

Saint-Véran or Mâcon from France. It would be good to offer a Chardonnay, since that’s America’s favorite varietal by far, and that’s where these two Burgundies come in because they’re both made from that grape. SaintVéran can be hard to find (and could stretch our price limit a bit), but if you happen to see it, grab it. The best remind us of lemon-cream pie — rich, vibrant and delicious. Some have hints of nutmeg and because they’re made from Chardonnay, can have that familiar Chardonnay oiliness and mouth-feel while others are crisp and tart like Granny Smith apples. Look for Verget, Joseph Drouhin and Domaine des Maillettes (Guy Saumaize). Mâcon tends to be simpler than Saint-Véran, but it’s loads of fun, less expensive and far easier to find. Some names to look for: Labouré-Roi, Cave de Lugny and Louis Jadot. Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. Just about everyone likes this wine and that’s a good thing, since there isn’t a more consistently good, reasonably priced white on the shelves these days. Juicy and mouthwatering, with lime, passion fruit, kiwi, minerals and hints of green pepper, it’s a consistent winner. Buy the youngest you see. Names to look for include Giesen, Chimney Creek, Kim Crawford,

Reds Portuguese red. These will not be available everywhere, but they’re worth a search as a really special treat for your friends or your colleagues at work — earthy, dry, rich and very real. People who only associate Portugal with Port will be amazed. These are often made from the same grapes as Port and you can sometimes taste the relationship, with flavors of blackberries, raspberries, pepper, herbs and even some chocolate fondue. They tend to be inexpensive because they haven’t been discovered yet. We wouldn’t try to give you specific names because it’s so hard to know what you’ll see, but you might want to look for wines from the Douro region. Beaujolais-Villages from France, not to be confused with Beaujolais Nouveau. These are soft, fruity, easysipping wines. So effortless. In fact, they’re so approachable that we often recommend them to white-wine drinkers who would like to make the transition to reds. Georges Duboeuf is reliable and ubiquitous. Louis Jadot is light on its feet. Buy the youngest available. Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile. Everyone is familiar with this grape, but in Chile it has a new twist.

As with other Chilean wines, the country’s terroir expresses itself with herbal, peppery tastes and sometimes a dollop of bittersweet chocolate. These are dry and earthy. Your guests will know they’re tasting something different and interesting — and the Cabernets can be tremendous bargains, too. Look for Montes or Luis Felipe Edwards from the Colchagua Valley. Santa Rita “120″ from the Rapel Valley is good, too.

Homemade Pasta Full Bar, Select Wine List Family-Owned since 1996 Happy Hour Mon-Fri, 5-6pm Live Music Fri & Sat

Pinot Noir from the U.S. American Pinot Noir has become one of the country’s most consistent wines. Year after year, America’s Pinots retain their real, true-fruit tastes of blackberries, black cherries, earth and vibrant acidity. They haven’t gone for heft, like some of their more-expensive siblings. Good names: Beringer, Sterling, Kendall-Jackson and Trinchero. We also like Cambria and Clos du Bois. Petite Sirah from California, not to be confused with better-known Syrah, another grape altogether. These are almost black, with earth, spices and great acidity, but the tastes you experience most are juicy blackberries and blueberries. Petite Sirah, sometimes called Petite Syrah, often needs to be opened early to give it enough air to calm down. These tend to be heady, lusty, lively wines. Among the most reliable producers are Parducci, Bogle, Concannon and Guenoc. These are especially good in cold weather.

CHRISTIAN MUSIC ICON MICHAEL W. SMITH Live at Celebrity Theatre Saturday, Jan.11 2014 The historic Celebrity Theatre presents multiple Grammy Award winning Christian artist Michael W. Smith at 8 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Smith began his career as a songwriter, penning songs for Amy Grant, Bill Gaither, and Sandi Patty before releasing his Grammy nominated debut album The Michael W. Smith Project in 1983 on Reunion Records. (Over the years, Reunion became part of Provident Music Group, Sony’s Christian division.) In the ‘90s, Smith became one of the Christian format’s first crossover artists with hits such as “Place in This World,” which peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100, and “I Will Be Here for You,” a No. 1 AC hit. The three-time Grammy winner is also known as one of the key architects of the current popularity of worship music. A noted composer, he’s also released two acclaimed instrumental albums, including his

most recent project, Glory, which received a Dove Award for “Best Instrumental” Album of the Year. Smith has charted 29 albums on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart, including 13 No. 1 titles and 25 that placed in the top 10. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets ($35, $45 and $65) are on sale now at Celebrity Theatre or online at www. celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext. 1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. The historic Celebrity Theatre is located 4 blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.

The letter X in Xmas is a Greek abbreviation for Christ. Many theologians estimate that Jesus wasn’t born on December 25 but sometime in September between 6BC and 30AD.

The world’s tallest Xmas tree at 221ft high was erected in a Washington shopping mall in 1950.

Astronomers believe the Star Of Bethlehem, which guided the wisemen to Jesus, may have been a comet or the planet Uranus.

The holly in a wreath symbolizes Christ’s crown of thorns while the red berries are drops of his blood.

BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW

Tune into Dave Pratt LIVE for more BYDKs!

Christmas Carols began as an old English custom called wassailing, toasting neighbors to a long life.

The chances of a white Christmas are just 1 in 10 for England and Wales, and 1 in 6 for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The word Noel derives from the French expression “les bonnes nouvelles” or “the good news”.

In 1999, residents of the state of Maine built the world’s biggest ever snowman at 113ft tall.

Jingle Bells was the first song broadcast from space when Gemini 6 astronauts Tom Stafford and Wally Schirra sang it on December 16, 1965. AZWeeklyMagazine.com
