Sing-A-Long GREASE Rolls into Scottsdale

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present Sing-a-Long-a Grease for a limited engagement Dec. 27–30 in Stage 2.

General-admission tickets are available for $15 online at www.ScottsdalePerformingArts.org or through (480) 499-TKTS (8587).

Sing-a-Long-a Grease is a fully interactive screening of the classic film with subtitled lyrics. Audience members are encouraged to dress up like a Rydell High T-Bird or Pink Lady, and sing along and dance with John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John and the gang. Poodle skirts and saddle shoes, black leather biker and powder-pink jackets, chiffon scarves and skinny ties are recommended, as are pink wigs and greased pompadours. Each screening features a host who will lead a vocal warm-up for the audience, demonstrate how to “hand-jive,” heckle in all the right places, and deploy the contents of their free goody bags. The host also will judge the costume competition and award prizes.

About Grease
Valentines Day 2012 marked the 40th anniversary of the stage musical Grease, which premiered at the Off-Broadway Eden Theatre in New York City before transferring to Broadway in June 1972. The show, about two lovers in a 1950s high school, was based on an earlier, grittier “play with incidental music” first staged in Chicago the previous year. In 1978,

it spawned the hit film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

 About Sing-a-Long-a
The unique, interactive entertainment form known as Sing-a-long-a, meanwhile, was allegedly born in a retirement home in Inverness, Scotland. The nurses wanted to involve the residents in an interactive group therapy. They therefore wanted to screen Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and gave out song sheets so that everyone could sing along. The idea was then developed in 1999, before opening at the Prince Charles Cinema in August of that year. The initial eight-show run soon sold out while attracting huge media attention. Regular Sing-a-Long-a shows have been running ever since in the United Kingdom and all around the world, including the ever-popular Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music.

Grease is suitable for all ages. Children are welcome, although evening performances can sometimes get a little lively and so may be more suitable for older children. Running time: 2 hours and 20 minutes, including pre-show activities. Sing-a-Long-a Grease

Anthony Weiner makes me laugh. People are so craven just in general. So craven and so out of sync with what is going on around them it appears comical, almost as if they have a nervous breakdown, as if they don’t know about (anything). Irony makes me laugh.

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE

ABOUT THE FILM

COLUMNISTS STAN ROBINSON

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Some Velvet Morning’

‘The Punk Singer’ Filmmaker Sini Anderson takes a look at the life of activist, musician and cultural icon Kathleen Hanna, who formed the punk band Bikini Kill and pioneered the “riot grrrl” movement of the 1990s. (NR - 80 minutes) Joseph: “The Punk Singer” tells Kathleen Hanna’s story through a filter of the fight for gender equality (a.k.a. feminism) but it ultimately comes across as a very well done behind-the-music special. Although the conversations are extremely candid and therefore fascinating, non-fans will undoubtedly be a bit bored before all is said and done.

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie Rebellion’ The third installment in the animated film series based on the Japanese television program, turned manga series, then video game follows Madoka, an eighth grader at Mitakihara middle school. Madoka and her friends have magical powers which allow them to battle witches. (NR – 116 minutes) Randy: Those walking in without plot knowledge may need to do a bit of research to understand what is going on, but that should not deter newbies from experiencing the magic. You will be put into sensory overload with the impressive visuals, which encompasses numerous forms of animation. One could simply mute the sound and run the film as an installation at a modern art museum or gallery. The film itself is a work of art.

Stanley Tucci plays a married man who arrives at the doorstep of his mistress (Alice Eve) after 4 years apart, claiming to have finally left his wife. But when she rejects his attempts to rekindle their romance, his persistence evolves into obsession - and a dark history between the former lovers comes into focus. (NR - 83 minutes) Stan: Featuring the often told theme of a contemporary look at loving, parting ways, and the effort of rekindling the freshness of their past relationship, it’s a journey of extreme ‘ups & downs’ and ‘twists & turns’ as each of the ex-lovers discover, and try to except, the changes that four years apart has made in each of their lives for quite the emotional ride. Joseph: “Some Velvet Morning” is more of a roller-coaster ride than most movies that spend millions of dollars on special effects. It digs its razor-sharp fangs deep into what little love and romance is left in the modern world and has got one spectacular kick-in-the-teeth of an ending that will leave your mouth agape.

RANDY MONTGOMERY

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With more than 22 years of experience in media production, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. E-mail him at Movies@StanRobinson.org.

Randy Montgomery’s reactions reveal the emotional intuition of an average moviegoer. With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Filmmaker Sini Anderson (‘The Punk Singer’) By Joseph J. Airdo “There is a scene where [Kathleen] says, ‘I have no idea what my life is about.’ And that was shocking to all of us who love Kathleen and are very inspired by her work. To hear her genuinely say that was super surprising. And she was also super humble about it. She is a very humble person. She was kind of figuring it out as she was talking about it. It was kind of perfect that it was actually our last day of filming and we were asking those questions and coming to those conclusions. “I just hope that [‘The Punk Singer’] inspires people to action. I think that there is a lot of isolation that we all experience and I think that isolation can become a little bit paralyzing. If we are brave enough to open up and share with our peers and

people that we can trust what is really going on with us, we have an opportunity to actually make something great about that and be of service to other people. “That is super important that is the kind of art that moves me the most - when people are being really honest. I feel like people are walking away after seeing ‘The Punk Singer’ feeling a little more willing to be open about where they are actually at or what their struggles have actually been. To feel like you are in a good place with that is actually empowering. I feel like there is a lot of power in vulnerability. So I hope that people feel empowered to just be a little more honest and feel less alone through doing that.” - Sini Anderson

Filmmaker Neil LaBute (‘Some Velvet Morning’) By Joseph J. Airdo love. “I tend to not be a writer who writes about theme but I certainly think that it is one [theme] that is there. What is love? How far do we go to get it? What will we do when we have it? What will we do to hold onto it? Those are themes that are certainly interesting to me. “The best experiences that I have had [making movies] have probably been the ones that have been relatively quick and inexpensive; when I sort of follow my own instincts and not get caught up in trying too many things or directing other people’s work.

By Joseph J. Airdo “One of the things that I have explored in a lot of different ways in a lot of different films [is the idea that] love is a funny thing. I have tried to explore how far [love] can stretch and how far it goes in both directions and can still be called

“[This film] reminded me of how much I liked what happened when I first started out as a filmmaker - how little time and money I had then. Some of my best work is when I keep things controlled and I have the time and people to do something that really speaks from the heart. That is probably true for just about anybody.” - Neil LaBute

ARTS! COVER STORY

TAKE AN EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY…

Imagine a stage performance so profound, so inspiring, it touches your soul. Let Shen Yun take you on a journey through 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture. Legends, myths, and heroes spring to life through classical Chinese dance. Ethnic and folk dances fill the stage with color and energy. The leaps and flips of Shen Yun’s aerial masters, thunderous battle drums, and singers’ soaring voices are all set to animated backdrops that transport you to another world. “5,000 years of Chinese music and dance in one night…“ - The New York Times

MORE THAN AN ART… The People of China have long held that their magnificent culture was a gift from the heavens. Art was primarily a means to explore the connection between humankind and the higher universe. Artists cultivated virtue in themselves because they felt that to create art worthy of the divine, there must first be inner beauty and purity. Shen Yun follows in these ancient traditions. Shen Yun artists believe that just mastering the surface of the art is not enough, as it is the heart of the artist that the audience feels. So they take the wisdom and values of traditional Chinese culture as part of their lives. These inspire them to nurture goodness in themselves on their path to artistic perfection.

“This is the finest thing, the finest event I’ve ever been to in my life… I was in tears, because of the human spirit, the dignity, the power, the love, coming out of these people was astounding. This is the profound, quintessential end of entertainment, there is nothing beyond this, nothing” -Jim Crill, producer

TWO GREAT CLASSICAL MUSIC TRADITIONS – ONE GLORIOUS SOUND. From the moment the gong is struck to herald the beginning of the show, you know you are in for something musically memorable.

“Mesmerizing! Reclaiming the divinely inspired cultural heritage of China.”

The Shen Yun Orchestra masterfully blends two of the world’s greatest classical music traditions. Chinese and Western. Ancient Chinese instruments such as the erhu and the delicate pipa lead the melody on top of a full orchestra of Western strings, percussion, woodwinds and brass. The Western orchestra with its energy and grandeur, and the Chinese instruments with their distinct tones and styles, create a dramatic new sound.

- Donna Karan, creator of DKNY (New York)

“Exquisitely beautiful. An extraordinary experience for us and the children.” - Cate Blanchett, Academy Awardwinning actress

AN ART FORM TEMPERED OVER THOUSANDS OF YEARS Classical Chinese Dance has helped preserve 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Built on traditional aesthetics, it was once passed down among the people, in imperial courts, and through ancient plays. Over thousands of years, it was constantly refined, eventually developing into the vast and distinctly Chinese dance form we know today. Classical Chinese dance has its own

training in basic skills, physical expression and postures, leaps, flips, spins and other difficult tumbling techniques, forming an extensive and independent dance system. Richly expressive, it portrays personalities and feelings with unparalleled clarity, depicting and scene in a strikingly vivid way. “Brilliant choreography! Extravagantly beautiful.” –Broadway World “Very Elegant, very athletic and very skilled” – John McColgan, Riverdance producer

“Vigorous physicality!” –Denver Post

10 a.m. on FSAZ

The reindeer with the incandescent nose guides Santa’s sleigh through a bad storm on Christmas Eve. Based on the song by Johnny Marks.

This well-known tale of the most famous reindeer of all offers a thoughtful lesson about discrimination. Young Rudolph is teased by the other reindeer and excluded from their games because his nose is different.

FROSTY THE SNOWMAN

THE SMURFS 2 There’s trouble when Smurfette — whose voice is supplied again by music superstar Katy Perry — is kidnapped and taken to Paris by the ever-sinister Gargamel (Hank Azaria) in this 2013 sequel that combines animation and live action, as did the first film. Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays also reprise their parts, but the little blue Smurfs expectedly get plenty of screen time. The film is dedicated to the late Jonathan Winters, heard again as Papa Smurf.

8 p.m. on CBS Jackie Vernon provides the voice of Frosty, the legendary snowman with a corncob pipe and a button nose. Frosty comes to life when a magician’s hat lands on his head.

JACK THE GIANT SLAYER 9 p.m. on HBO Nicholas Hoult (“Warm Bodies”) plays courageous Jack, who ascends into a world of literal giants — led by Bill Nighy as one of the twoheaded variety — to rescue a captured princess (Eleanor Tomlinson).

Animated. A snail gets the chance to escape his slow-paced life and race in the Indianapolis 500 when a freak accident gives him the power of superspeed.

TUCSON TOUGH

He used to just sweep floors. Then, a chance meeting with Mixed Martial Arts trainer Joey Rivera transformed Yager from a janitor at the University of Arizona into the baddest hombre in Tucson.

December 11th, 2013 - December 17th, 2013

ARIZONA’S OWN JOE YAGER SMASHES FACES AND SWEEPS FLOORS FOR A LIVING in mixed martial arts, cardio is a highly important, yet highly underrated, quality. Like many, Yager knows that well and does not take the possibility of an early knockout for granted. “I anticipate every fight going the distance,” Yager said. “You have to, because the level I’m fighting, everyone is good. This guy I’m fighting is just as good as me. I come prepared. I come conditioned so that I can go 15 minutes non-stop regardless of what happens in that fight. If I don’t come prepared in that avenue, then I failed and my coaches have failed.” Yager’s young MMA career is on the rise. As he progresses in Bellator, success will soon follow the pride of Tucson. “Bellator is a fantastic organization,” Yager said. “I’m so excited that I’m getting my opportunity with them. They really take care of their fighters. It’s nice to have that.” For more great sports and lifestyle info, read AZ Sports & Lifestyle Magazine. www.AZSAL.com

“I work Monday through Friday from 7 am to 3:30 pm,” Yager said. “I’ve got a two-year-old kid that I have three nights a week. Those three nights are the nights that I have off, unless she wants to run with daddy. I run three miles before work two, three, four times a week. Every night that I don’t have my kid, I’m in the gym, whether it’s Saturday or Sunday, and I put in four to five hours. In order to be good at this sport and get to where I want to be, I’ve got to put in the work.” Despite sharing custody of his daughter, she is the driving force of his career.“I think of her all the time,” Yager said. “She’s my motivation. I want to make an easier life for the both of us.” The 32-year-old Yager has 26 years of wrestling experience, including college at Central Michigan. Originally, he preferred using his experience as a coach and never had the intention of fighting MMA, but meeting Rivera changed everything. One day, Rivera caught Yager working voluntarily on a Saturday. Rivera originally came to Yager’s office for some supplies, but

then he noticed the wrestling tattoo on Yager’s leg. That tattoo was an icebreaker and led to Rivera asking Yager to coach wrestling at his gym. This little moment would lead to the beginning of Yager’s MMA career.

boxing. Combat sports are one of the best cardio workouts you can do. And

“Three weeks later, he says ‘I got a fight for you,’” Yager said. “I told him I wasn’t interested, because it wasn’t what I wanted to do. But the son of a gun came into my house and talked me right into it. So I went in and the moment they closed the cage doors and the hairs on my neck stood up, I knew it was for me.” Many MMA fighters have a background in wrestling, including Chael Sonnen, who was an NCAA Division I AllAmerican wrestler at the University of Oregon in the late 1990s. “Wrestling is the base of this sport,” Yager said, “because you pin people against the cage, you’re on the ground. When you’re up standing, it’s a whole different game. I feel comfortable there. I learned enough where I’m comfortable on my feet, but it feels like it’s going in a direction that I don’t want it to, I know I can get it to the ground. I know I can get it to the cage, where I like to be.” Once wrestlers go from college to professional MMA, they have to quickly learn how to effectively punch and kick. Those skills take some time to figure out, said Yager, who built his ability through

But, get this: We don’t need anyone’s permission to be mediocre. Nope, we expect mediocrity and, we get it. On the other hand, success and excellence seems to require expressed approval and permission from someone else.

MACK NEWTON ON… Being Here Do you really believe that you were put here to fail? I don’t. I believe we were put here to succeed, to achieve and to grow. But, to succeed means that we have to step out of line, away from the norm, and march to the tune of our own distant drummer. And therein lies the problem: Since success comes from inside of each of each of us, we have to move…act! So many of us are still behaving as we did in elementary school, standing quietly in line waiting for your name to be called before you can step out of line. Just like in school when you can’t speak until your name is called, it seems that so many of us are still waiting for permission to be successful. There’s an old Jesuit saying that goes, “it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission.” When I look around, I see people waiting for permission to do all sorts of things. I see people waiting for permission to like themselves…waiting for permission to become healthy…waiting for permission to become wealthy and sometimes I see people just waiting. Waiting for the voice of some long forgotten teacher to excuse them from the room, before they can get started. But, and hear this: Unless it comes from inside of you, that voice will never come. As far as I’m concerned, being here is all the

According to Brian Tracey, we are success organisms and we succeed by setting goals and making plans for their completion. I agree. When you set goals, that presses on the success button and all you have to do to fail (or be mediocre) is to stop pressing on the success button. You default to failure. It’s automatic. So, to that degree, mediocrity is expected and even planned for. We’re raised to be mediocre, told not to step out of line, made to memorize facts, been graded on a curve and if we move ahead too quickly, we’re told to slow down so we can stay with the pack. But, with all of that said, we also live in a world ripe with challenges and opportunities and we have the talents and abilities to face and accept them - To go on, to succeed and to grow bigger and brighter than ever before, if only we would give ourselves permission. That fact alone should convince us that no voice is forthcoming and that our presence here is all the permission we will ever need to succeed. THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEER

From time to time we enter the discussion about whether or not beer has any real health benefits. In this time of health care reform it seems like a good time to revisit the topic. The key to this discussion is that we always do our best to be able to cite legitimate publications and research that tout the advantages of moderate drinking. In case you missed the key word…it is MODERATE. Any way, it seems like the holiday season is a pretty good time to discuss that further. When we discovered that a tiny microbrewery and distillery in Pretoria, South Africa had put together a pretty good list. So let’s take a look at this list and maybe you can use something off of it the next time you want to slip out for a couple of beers. Medical studies have over the years consistently demonstrated that moderate consumption of beer can be part of a healthy lifestyle. 1. Drinking beer is good for your liver! Drinkers of beer can get rid of poisonous heavy metals like lead and copper up to five times more effectively than tee-totalers. Alcohol causes the small blood vessels in

the liver to expand which speeds up metabolism. (Beer Net Publication, April 2001 Biological Institute, University of Charkov, Prof. AnatolijBohkov) 2. It lowers your risk of heart attacks. Those drinking beer on a daily basis, averaging 4-9 liters(editor’s note: A liter of beer is about 33.8 ounces, so 4-9 liters is 1.5 to 3 beers per day)- of beer per week, have the lowest rate of heart attacks. Their risk is approximately 50% lower when compared to non-drinkers. (Bobak et al 2000; Hoffmeister et al 1999; Kitamura et al 1998). 3. It prevents cholesterol from oxidizing. Hop compounds xanthohumol and quercetin, both strong antioxidants are very effective in their ability to prevent LDL (the bad form of cholesterol) from oxidation. When LDL is oxidized it will be laid down on the artery wall causing them to narrow, thus increasing the chances of blockage and heart attacks (Miranda et al 2000). Antioxidants are thought to be able to quench and inactivate the free radicals, which may cause the types of cellular damage that can lead to both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer.

4. It boosts your antioxidant levels. Recent studies have turned its attention to the anti-oxidative role of plant polyphenols in general, their beneficial influence on various aspects of health and in particular, their role in dealing with dangerous free radicals within the body. Analysis can show how much of these good compounds are in beer- but can it be absorbed (called bioavailability) by humans and hence have a positive effect on health? Yes! The maltderived antioxidant ferulic acid is 100% absorbed by humans (compared to 11-25% absorption of ferulic acid from a tomato). The total level of antioxidants in the blood increased significantly after just a single glass of ale, again proving that antioxidants in beer are well absorbed (Ghiselli et al 2000) Not that any person in his right mind would settle for just a single glass! 5. It boosts vitamin B6; B12; folate and mineral levels. If compared to wine and spirits, beer is the only beverage that contains significant levels of vitamins. High homocysteine (Hcy) levels in the blood are associated with increased risk of CVD. Vitamins like B6; B12 and especially folate (all naturally occurring in beer) are now recommended as part of doctors’ orders to be taken daily to control elevated levels of Hcy (Walker, BRI, 2001). The minerals in beer come from both the malt and the brewing liquor. The beneficial ratio of potassium to sodium is particularly important in relation to cardiovascular disease. 6. Keeps homocysteine (Hcy) levels low. Van der Gaag and his colleagues found that drinking wine and spirits increased serum Hcy levels, whereas, counteracted by folates and vitamin B6, beer consumption had no influence. A clear case of beer should be first for thirst! 7. Drinking beer boosts your soluble fiber intake and lowers cholesterol. One of the most effective

forms of soluble fibre for lowering cholesterol is betaglucan, which is the predominant form of fiber in beer. Beers with high malt content like craft beers may provide up to 30% of the recommended daily fiber intake (Gromes et al 2000). 8. Drinking beer help in combating cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other immune system attacking diseases. Hops contain compounds that are unique and rare in nature – like prenyl flavonoids (8PN) which are phytoestrogens that are natural plant based compounds, which mimics the natural estrogens in the body (Bingham et al 1998). The highest 8PN levels in beers have been found in dark and bitter ales and stouts and from craft breweries where whole hopping is practiced. 9. Beer ensures healthy bones. Beer has a nutritional benefit that promotes healthy bones and connective tissue (Dr. Jonathan Powell, Kings College, London). Because of the brewing process, silicon is leached from barley grain in a form that is readily accessible to the body. 10. Beer protects against gallstones. CONTINUED ON 46...

...CONTINUED FROM 44 Prof. Oliver James, from the school of clinical medical studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, says that beer protect against gallstones, kidney stones and the bacterium Heliobacter pylori, which is directly linked to stomach ulcers and cancer. 11. Hoppy beer protects against cataracts. Certain hop flavonoids, in particular xanthohumol and its isomerised form isoxanthohumol, can show positive effects against heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, cataracts and certain forms of cancer.

Wow…that was a pretty exhaustive list. We may not know the beers of Drayman’s, but we like the way they think. Lots of big words, but the gist of it is…there are health benefits to drinking beer in moderation. So we recommend that you cut this article out and keep it wherever you keep your beer. That way you always have a reminder of the benefits of beer. Maybe we can include the Affordable Beer Act with our next health care reform. If you are interested in learning more, track down the books by Victor Preedy and Charlie Bamforth that you see pictured somewhere with this article. Until next time.

12. Beer promotes sleep. A famous vitaminologist Professor Steep from Germany prescribes beer (not drugs) for insomnia. Two vitamins, lactoflavin and nicotinic acid that are present in beer are the secret weapons that promote sleep. The same two vitamins also speed up bone degeneration after a fracture and prevent low blood counts. Hops in beer itself are a natural sedative that also promotes sleep.

13. Beer reduces risk of thrombosis The flavonoids that are present in roasted malt, also to a lesser extent in hops and barley, prevent blood platelets from clamping together – making the blood less sticky – therefore decreasing your risk of blood clotting that can cause heart attacks or thrombosis.

Phoenix Brewers Festival FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS!

Hello again beer lovers, today let’s review the Phoenix Brewers Invitational Beer Festival which happened this last weekend at Heritage Square in Phoenix. Let’s begin by saying that this event was a sight to behold. Put on by Landon Evans of HDE Promotions (producers of the Ameri-Can Beer Festival) in conjunction with Stacy Fretz and Phoenix Ale Brewing, this production was all about new and up and coming local breweries. In addition, we had an opportunity to come together and remember Greg Fretz. He was the brain child of this event, co-founder of Phoenix Ale and sadly passed on earlier this year. It was amazing to see so many friends of “Fretzy” there to honour his contribution to our community. Now when I said this event was all about showcasing new and local breweries, I wasn’t kidding. Have you made it to Huss Brewing in Tempe yet? How about Fate Brewing in Scottsdale or perhaps Wilderness Brewing in Gilbert? If not, let’s just say that you could have sampled them all plus many more and all in one place. Hits of the show ranged from Fate’s GABF silver medal winning Candy Bar Milk Stout, Huss’s Rice Pudding Porter and Wilderness’s Barrel Aged Pecan Ale to Grand Canyon’s Winter Bourbon Brown, Phoenix Ale’s Festivus Ale and Old World’s Sour Ale. Even better, it seemed as though all the great local brewers came out to make it a party. OHSO, Desert Eagle, SanTan, Barrio and even Flagstaff’s newest place Historic Brewing were all out to show off their newest creations.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

The lines were never too long and great food from trucks such as the Traveling Monk and Luncha Libre were there to round out the day. All in all 5 STARS! Until Next Week, Cheers!

When most players walk up to a Blackjack table they may not pay any attention to the house rules for the game. But changes in house rules from Casino to Casino can have a big effect on your long term win or loss. In a basic 6 deck game with these house rules; Dealer hits soft 17 (Ace-6) Double on any two cards Double after split Re-split to 4 hands Player can Re-split Aces Player can hit split Aces Blackjack pays 3 to 2 In the game with these rules the house would have about a .39% advantage over the player. If we change the Dealer hits soft 17 to the Dealer stands on soft 17 the house advantage drops to .18%. If we change the Double after split to no Double after split the house advantage jumps to .54%. If we change that the player can only double on 9-11 the house edge climbs to .51%. If we change the rule that the player can

only split one time the house edge is .51%. If we change the rule that a player can re-split aces to no re-splitting aces the house edge is .45%. If a player cannot hit split aces as is the case in most of the casinos in Arizona the house advantage grows to .57%. But the biggest swing of all of the house rules is changing blackjack from paying 3 to 2, to paying 6 to 5. This changes the house edge to a whopping 1.75%. If you don’t remember anything else, pay attention to what blackjack pays. I haven’t run across a 6 to 5 game here in Arizona, but in Vegas and Laughlin - casinos they offer single deck blackjack games that pay 6 to 5. If we keep all of the rules and change the game to single deck paying 6 to 5 the house edge is 1.38%. In an 8 deck game with the same rules paying 3 to 2 on a blackjack the house edge is .41% so you would be much better off playing an 8 deck game rather than a single deck that pays 6 to 5.

Two decks +.20% Four Decks +.05%

The best house rules for the player A single deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17, Player can Double after split, Player can Double on any first two cards, Player can re-split 4 times, Player can Re-split Aces, Player can hit split Aces, Late surrender and Blackjack pays 3 to 2. You know why this game doesn’t exist? Because, with these rules a player would have a .22% advantage over the Casino – However, if the Casino offered a single deck game with all of these rules and just changed the blackjack payout from 3 - 2 to 6 - 5 the house would go from being at a -.22% disadvantage to a huge 1.17% advantage. Again if you find a blackjack game paying 6-5, “RUN”, do not play it. If all players refused to play those games, casinos would have no choice but to offer Blackjack paying 3-2. Changes that decrease the casino edge Double after split +.14% Re-split Aces +.07% Single Deck +.50

Changes that hurt a blackjack player Dealer hits Ace-6 -.20% Double on 11 only -.46% Double on 10,11 only -.09% Double on 9,10,11 only -.09% No re-splitting pairs -.04% Always give your Business to casinos that offer the best rules, after all you work hard for your money, the casino should have to work hard for their money too. ZD WINES CELEBRATES 45 YEARS By Kirstin Havice A pioneer is defined as one who ventures into unknown territory; one who opens up new areas of thought and research. Hearing the story of Norman deLeuze, one of the original founders of ZD Wines, brings such words to mind, and his story charts the path of a pioneer. Fascinated with the aerospace industry, Norman began his career as an engineer, but the world of wine also captivated him. In 1968, he and his partner Gino Zepponi, also an aerospace engineer, founded ZD Wines in Sonoma County, Calif., an area that had not seen a winery permit issued in almost 20 years. Both kept their fulltime careers, so cultivating their dream was done on weekends and holidays with the help of family and friends. Throughout his time as a winemaker, Norman championed organic farming and eco practices in the wine world long before it became a growing movement. He had a strong belief that biodiversity and limited intervention were the keys to a strong vineyard, and in turn, world-class wine. Later in his life, he applied his belief in nontoxic methods towards researching and trying many alternative treatments when he was diagnosed with nonHodgkin’s lymphoma, extending his life for three and a half years passed what doctors expected.

1-800-712-4514 Call Us Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm PST.

Recently, Arizona welcomed three generations of the deLeuze familyNorman’s wife, Founder Rosa Lee deLeuze, his son, President Brett deLeuze and his grandson, Assistant Winemaker Brandon deLeuze. Here to celebrate 45 years of ZD Wines, they hosted a lunch at El Chorro Restaurant showcasing their Cabernet Sauvignon wines. This included their ultimate Cabernet, Abacus, which retails for $550 a bottle.

In speaking with them, one can sense that while the focus is to produce world class wine, their drive comes from honoring Norman and carrying on the beliefs and life practices he held dear. Wine is their expression of this. Before his passing, Norman was instrumental in forming the deLeuze Family Endowment for a Non-toxic Cure for Lymphoma. Not far from reaching the $1 million mark, it will become an Endowed Professorship Fund at UC Davis that supports the teaching, research and service activities of Norman’s primary oncologist, Dr. Joseph Toscano. “We’re into all of the most healthy things we can do,” said Rosa Lee. The endowment is another example of the whole focus. It’s always been about how we can do things naturally without the use of all these other chemicals.” The deLeuze family continues to research and implement new organic farming methods to create a healthier environment and make great tasting wine. They have also started growing fruit and vegetables, producing their own olive oil and venturing into dessert wine. Norman’s granddaughter, Jill deLeuze, has also joined the business as the California Sales Manager. On ZD’s website, it reads, “Norman took great pride in creating a business which brought his family together, where each member could participate in their own way.” Even after his passing, his idea has lived on. “The ultimate is having my children and now grandchildren wanting to carry on and do what he did,” said Rosa Lee. “No one was every pushed into this. It was because they wanted to be part of it.” Read the full story at AZWineLifestyle. com

Kim Wilson’s Blues All-Stars Band Friday, December 13th The Rhythm Room 9pm, Tickets: $20 Kim Wilson is an American blues singer and harmonica player. He is best known as the lead vocalist and frontman for The Fabulous Thunderbirds on two hit songs of the 1980s; “Tuff Enuff”, and “Wrap It Up.” In Austin he formed The Fabulous Thunderbirds with guitarist Jimmie Vaughan, and they became the house band at the blues club, Antone’s, owned by Clifford Antone. Muddy Waters called Wilson, “The greatest harmonica player since Little Walter”. Wilson continues to perform up to 300 concert dates per year at blues music festivals and clubs all over

the world, both as leader of The Fabulous Thunderbirds and with the Kim Wilson Blues All-Stars. @The Rhythm Room, 1019 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix 85014

Candye Kane X-Mas Show! Saturday, December 14 The Rhythm Room 9:3pm, Tickets: $12 Superhero is the name of Candyes’ original song and the title of her latest CD for Los Angeles based label, Delta Groove records. It is also an apt description of the jump blues singer and songwriter from East Los Angeles who has earned this moniker the hard way. Kanes’ live shows are the stuff of legend. She honors the bold blues women of the past with both feet firmly planted in the present. She belts - growls - shouts - croons and moans from a lifetime of suffering and overcoming obstacles. She’ll slay the crowd with her balls out rendition of Whole Lotta Love or glorify the virtues of zaftig women with 200 pounds of fun. She often says she is a “fat black drag queen trapped in a white woman’s body” and

she dresses the part. Bedecked in bright colored feathers, sequins and rhinestones, Kane’s performance is Mississippi by way of Las Vegas with a quick stopover in San Francisco. Kane’s tenth CD release, Superhero debuted at number nine on the Billboard Blues Charts. The cd continues to receive amazing reviews worldwide. @ The Rhythm Room, 1019 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix 85014

Checking in with

Diana Perez

W

orking overnights while expecting her second child is fine with Diana Perez. The current co-anchor (with John Muller) of ABC’s early-earlymorning “World News Now” has gotten accustomed to the hours, having had a permanent seat on the program since February. As a fill-in anchor for much of the previous year, she found what a good fit the often loose, humorous approach of the newscast was for her. “When I was given the opportunity to go to the network,” the spirited Perez says, “it was one of those things where I always thought, ‘OK. Now is when you’ve got to get serious.’ While I still feel I am delivering true news and I am still a true professional, it’s just so wonderful to be able to let loose. That is my personality. “The format of the show plays so well into being able to show who you truly are,” adds Perez, “and that comes across on the screen. You just have that opportunity where you’re not always delivering the bad stuff. You get the really important news people have to hear, but you get it with a dose of irreverence ... nothing I was expecting when I got called up to the network.” An anchor-reporter in New England for several years before joining ABC, Perez starts her maternity leave shortly after New Year’s Day. Husband Ducis Rodgers is a sports anchor at Philadelphia ABC affiliate WPVI, and Perez allows that balancing their marriage and careers has its challenges, especially with their vastly different work hours. ‘Finding Christmas’ The spirit of the season can be found if you really look, and Hallmark Channel’s “Finding Christmas,” airing Sunday, Dec. 15, proves that’s true with love and fashion. Don’t expect surprises, but it’s unlikely anyone who tunes in seeks chase scenes or special effects. Instead, it’s a sweet, quiet story of expected and happy outcomes. The clothes represent the film’s two very different locales – Manhattan and Butters, N.C., which as of the last census had a population of 294. Costume designer Julianna Clarke was working on this movie in Canada last spring, when stores featured summer clothes. “We have two different kinds of looks,” Clarke says. Siblings Ryan and Owen (Tricia Helfer, J.T. Hodges) live in Butters, where she’s a veterinarian, and he’s a handyman and musician. “They are country, but still stylish,” Clarke says.

Dule Hill

‘Psych’ prescribes musical therapy

LOOK! SECTION

After waiting years, the “Psychos” are victorious! Die-hard fans of USA Network’s “Psych” finally get to see “Psych: The Musical” on Sunday, Dec. 15. For those who know Dule Hill only from “The West Wing,” he’s a smooth tap-dancer now starring on Broadway in “After Midnight.” He, James Roday, Timothy Omundson (who has a particularly rich baritone) and the rest of the cast also prove they can sing in the two-hour special. “After Season 5, we were at Comic-Con, and (series creator Steve Franks) put it out there to fans: ‘Do you want a musical?’ And everyone screamed,” Roday says. “He could have said, ‘Do you want a show where we all sit in a circle and break wind?’ And they would have reacted in the same way.” Franks recalls he toyed with the idea of creating a musical episode since the beginning. “We had started on the pilot, talking about doing a musical, and it was just a weird, off-in-the-distance idea,” Franks says. “We talked about it because after the last shot of the pilot, James and Dule had done a lot of singing and performed Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror.’ ” In the special, Shawn and Gus (Roday and Hill) track down crazed playwright Z (guest star Anthony Rapp, “Rent”). Z is accused of acting out every scorned playwright’s fantasy – OK, maybe only the most delusional scorned playwrights – of burning a theater to the ground with a critic inside. Z was institutionalized in a hospital for the criminally insane, where he had, conveniently, confided in Mr. Yang (Ally Sheedy). As usual, “Psych” does not take itself too seriously, and the musical does not require knowing the series’ back stories.
