December 7th, 10am – 5pm Back for the 6th year, Mesa Old West Fest returns with a new kind of country. “We’ve taken an extremely successful event and given it a spitshine,” describes Erica Snyder, Events Manager for The Downtown Mesa Association. Two very passionate Old West enthusiasts, George Notarpole and Mike Pierson, started the event six years ago with the dream of making it a huge event for Downtown Mesa. They did just that and the event continued to grow year after year. Both, having a special interest in Downtown Mesa, partnered with the Downtown Mesa Association this year to take the event to the next level; a big country-western festival with
entertainment and activities for everyone, not just Old West enthusiasts like themselves. Old West Fest has booked several of the top Arizona local country bands including Desert Dixie, Sour Diesel Trainwreck, Trailer Queen, Jimmy Pines and Washboard Jere and Chris and Dave to amp up the level of entertainment. There will be historical gun fight re-enactments by the Mohave Muleskinners and the local blacksmith, among other very western additions. “We’d like to invite the whole community to come and experience the ‘old Mesa’ while still enjoying the luxuries of modern day festivals, like kettle corn... you can’t take that away!,” smiles Erica Snyder.

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE

ABOUT THE FILM

COLUMNISTS STAN ROBINSON

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Out of the Furnace’

‘Bettie Page Reveals All’ The world’s greatest pinup model and cult icon Bettie Page recounts the true story of how her free expression overcame government witch-hunts to help launch America’s sexual revolution. (R - 101 minutes) Stan: When I think of Bettie Page, those formative years of the early 70s comes to mind of going to film school days and working for Playboy in Chicago nights, and the Playboy centerfold pages which is how I learned about Bettie Page. Totally captivating is the actual voice of Bettie Page used to present her story in a compelling presentation by filmmaker Mark Mori.

BET, YOU

‘The Broken Circle Breakdown’ Johan Heldenbergh and Veerle Baetens play two people who fall in love at first sight in spite of their differences. He talks, she listens. He’s a romantic atheist; she’s a religious realist. But when their daughter becomes seriously ill, their love is put on trial. (NR - 112 minutes) Joseph: “The Broken Circle Breakdown” effectively demonstrates the intense highs and lows of a romantic relationship, laying passions - both good and bad - on the line for all to see and likely identify with as well. It is all jumbled up in a nonlinear narrative that may frustrate some viewers but will genuinely engage others.

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

Christian Bale plays a man who takes matters into his own hands to find justice when his younger brother (Casey Affleck) mysteriously disappears and law enforcement fails to follow through. Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Sam Shepard and Zoe Saldana also star. (R - 116 minutes) Stan: With Christian Bale’s powerful ‘every man’ characterization and Woody Harrelson’s emotionally despicable ‘heavy’ (in production we don’t use ‘Bad guy’ to describe those roles), one is on the edge of our seats as its realized early on they are on a collision course that can only end badly, stays with you long after you’ve left the theater. Joseph: “Out of the Furnace” is a powerful motion picture that will leave you feeling both an emotional and psychological weight. Having said that, it stretches a simple story a tad too long and the film’s first half is far superior to its second half. Still, its authentically gritty setting and unsettling ending are certain to remain with you.

RANDY MONTGOMERY

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With more than 22 years of experience in media production, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. E-mail him at Movies@StanRobinson.org.

Randy Montgomery’s reactions reveal the emotional intuition of an average moviegoer. With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Director Mark Mori (‘Bettie Page Reveals All’) By Stan Robinson

“I was having lunch with my entertainment attorney in Los Angeles in 1996 and he showed me a copy of ‘Bettie Page, The Life of a Pinup Legend’, I look at it and said ‘Gee, I’d like to do a documentary on this. I didn’t know who Bettie was, I recognized her face, but I didn’t know any thing about her, not even her name, just knew the face!

with her that had originally just been for research purposes. I realized that I could have ‘Her narrate the film’ and I also realized that I wanted to give kids these days, a kind of a take on the 1950s. Younger people today didn’t really know about the 50s and those two ideas became the core of my project!

“I started shooting bits and pieces in 96, just stuff that was needed to be shot like the book release party, interviewing Paula Klaw, interviewing Art Amsie, then there was the Victoria Secret lingerie show inspired by Bettie. Then I had to put the project aside for a while because it was self financed with no studio backing or anything. Later when I came back to it, I had a couple of ideas. I had always wanted to get Bettie on camera but I was never able to. Than, I stumbled on the idea that I could work with just using my audio interviews

“Like you, I also grew in the 50s and 60s, read David Halberstam book and Gay Talese’s book ‘Thy Neighbor’s Wife’, and by the way, Gay Talese had tried to find Bettie for his book and couldn’t find her! I wanted to give people a sense of the 50s, the repressive atmosphere, the McCarthyism of sex that Bettie was dealing with, and, I thought it echoed some things going on today. I thought maybe, people might recognize some of those same factors.

“The audience for this has been young women, which is something I didn’t know when I started to make the film! Bettie Page’s audience has gone from men in the 50’s, to being young women today, who see her as this kind of role model of attainable beauty as oppose to the unattainable beauty that society puts forward!” – Mark Mori

Writer/Actor Johan Heldenbergh (‘Broken Circle Breakdown’) By Joseph J. Airdo with a feeling that they are touched by these characters. There is also a lot of hope in the movie and there is a lot of things to think about. There is a political aspect. You could look at the movie in so many ways. [But, ultimately,] I think that love cannot conquer everything - as we are often made to believe in cinemas and television series. “I had recently broke up with my girlfriend. I was married for 20 years and we had three children. Luckily, I didn’t experience the things that Elise and Didier experience in the movie. But it is all in there. It is very personal. I just wrote it for myself. I didn’t need a lot of research or anything like that. I just wrote it for myself. I needed to write something about a breakup and I just did and it came out that way. It came out in a completely other story but it is all in there. “‘The Broken Circle Breakdown’ is basically a love story. It is about a very passionate, glorious love and I want people to leave the venues

“Sometimes even glorious love is not able to conquer everything. That is just the truth because 80 percent of people have to go through that experience - a breakup. It is sad but it is the truth. And this is a movie that was made with the utmost integrity and the utmost honesty. Even the music is honest. It is acoustic music. You could just take the guitar off the wall and play it with your grandfather, your uncles and your sons. Everything about it is honest truthful and full of integrity. I believe that is a sentiment that people leave the movie with.” - Johan Heldenbergh

Roller Disco and Greek Mythology Collide in Outlandish Broadway Musical Xanadu At Arizona Theatre Company, Nov. 30-Dec. 31 Arizona Theatre Company brings the tongue-in-cheek, award-winning hit Broadway musical Xanadu to the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave., in Tucson from Nov. 30 – Dec. 31 and the Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe, in Phoenix from Dec. 31 – Jan. 19.

who treated Xanadu the movie as their own muse, have creatively transformed cinematic straw into Broadway gold by adding an actual plot, inventing new characters and situations, stirring in a few extra ELO/Olivia Newton-John hits, adding a knowing wink and barrels of humor, while inventing freely around the basic outline of the movie.”

In this hilarious Broadway musical featuring classic ELO and John Farrar hit songs, the beautiful Greek goddess Clio, disguised as the Australian-accented mortal Kira, is sent by Zeus on a quest from the heavens to inspire the young beach-boy artist Sonny Malone to achieve his roller skate-fueled obsession to open a roller disco. Based on the famous 1980 movie starring Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly, their discodriven rolling adventure is surrounded by popular hits from the ‘80s like “Magic,” “I’m Alive,” “Evil Woman” and, of course, “Xanadu.” Directed by Arizona Theatre Company Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein and featuring real-life husband-wife team Jessica Skerritt as Kira, the magical Greek muse, and Dane Stokinger as Sonny, the Venice Beach street artist, Xanadu has earned consistently rave reviews. “The quips are quick, the timing flawless – Goldstein’s Xanadu is a well-oiled ‘80s machine that

could not be having any more fun without some sort of illicit drug involved,” Jasmine Joshua wrote in Examiner.com. Xanadu is so funny and enjoyable, you would have to be made of stone not to have a great time.” “Xanadu is about roller skates, mirror balls,

With his soulful voice and earthy, Southern charm, Michael Grimm charmed millions of viewers as a contestant on season five of America’s Got Talent. Parlaying his substantial singer-songwriter appeal into a first-place finish, Michael took home the $1 million prize and headlined the first-ever national America’s Got Talent Tour. Following that, he toured with the legendary Stevie Nicks and Heart. Comprised of six educated, young men who love creativity, music and God, Committed began in 2003 at Forest Lake Academy and solidified their sound while at school at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala. The group had the amazing opportunity to be featured on the second season of the hit singing competition, The Sing-Off, and emerged as the season two champions. JOBS Ashton Kutcher typically has veered toward lightweight romantic comedies, but he makes a very credible Steve Jobs in this biography of the visionary Apple co-founder. The screenplay by Matt Whiteley doesn’t shy away from the warts that made Jobs a less-than-likable figure at times, but it also captures the drive he had in revolutionizing the world’s everyday technology ... and, for that matter, the world itself. Josh Gad also is excellent as Steve Wozniak.

STOKER 9 p.m. on HBO What’s the secret of Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode)? It’s revealed slowly and eerily to the mother and daughter (Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska) who welcome him into their home, then have cause to wonder if that was a smart move, in this 2013 intriguing tale from director Park Chan-wook (“Oldboy”).

Against All Odds

Senior safety Alden Darby has overcome a number of obstacles throughout his life to become the captain of the Arizona State Sun Devil defense

by Byron Kline

his jersey is well-deserved.”

It doesn’t take long to spot Alden Darby. Whether on the football field or anywhere around campus, he’s almost always the center of attention; chatting, laughing, or maybe even dancing. Whatever it is, you can guarantee he’s doing it with a smile. But behind that smile is a young man who has overcome more than his fair share of challenges in order to get where he is today. Like many of his Arizona State teammates, Darby hails from Southern California. Unlike them though, he grew up on the east side of Long Beach, near 21st Street and Lewis Avenue. It was a part of town once popularized by early ’90s hip hop artists Warren G and Nate Dogg for its high crime rate, gang activity, and hard core drug scene. “Growing up out there, there was a lot of peer pressure,” Darby said. “There was always something bad or negative going on in the area. I was forced into some bad situations and to hang out with the wrong people. It was rough. Growing up in that environment, there was no escaping doing the wrong thing.” Darby’s parents divorced at a young age. His father moved to nearby Los Angeles, leaving him and his three older sisters to stay with their mother, Nellie, who spent time in and out of jail throughout his childhood, forcing the four siblings to often fend for themselves. “Unfortunately, when she would go to jail, I would have to bounce around and live with my aunties or friends or my stepfather when I was younger,” he said. “It was rough, but I made the best out of the situation and I never held a grudge or was mad or sad. I don’t know why, but I would always just roll with the flow, no matter what situation was tossed at me. “But there was always something that kept me from falling all the way in and that was football. Ultimately, it was football that kept me sane and kept me heading in the right direction. I’m very blessed and thankful that there was something greater than me that kept me on the right road.” Darby starred at Millikan High School where, as a senior, he was the fourth highest rated wide receiver in California before being moved to quarterback after the team’s starter suffered a shoulder injury in the season opener. Darby would go on to lead the Rams in both passing and rushing yards, while being named to the All-Moore League First Team and the league’s Offensive Player of the Year. But despite all of his accolades, Darby

failed to receive even one scholarship offer by season’s end, leaving him to take recruiting matters into his own hands. Just weeks before national signing day, Darby assembled a small list of schools he thought might be a good fit for him. He mailed out his highlight tapes and left voicemails with each school’s coaching staff in one final attempt to extend his academic and football career, and ultimately get out of Long Beach. The very next day, former Arizona State receivers coach Eric Yarber called, offering Darby the opportunity he long sought. “The next morning, Coach Yarber called and was like, ‘Man, I don’t know how we weren’t recruiting you but we just got done watching your highlight tape and we want to offer you a full scholarship,’” he recalled with a smile and a sense of relief. “To tell you the truth though, ASU treated me like family right off the top. They didn’t talk to me about how they were going to use me on the field or in the defense. All they cared about was getting my school in order and getting my life going.” Darby arrived in Tempe in 2010, and despite his prowess for being a multi-dimensional offensive threat, was immediately converted to defense. During his first two seasons, he played in 23 games at a variety of positions, including cornerback, safety, and even outside linebacker as he developed into a full-time defensive specialist. He was finally given a permanent position and role to fulfill when Head Coach Todd Graham took command in 2012, moving Darby back to safety and challenging him to become one of the leaders on the Sun Devil defense. “They looked at all my skills and assets and said they were going to move me to bandit safety and let me do what I do best; just sit back there, roam, read the quarterback, and go get the ball,” he said. “Now, I love playing safety. I feel like I can see everything. Sometimes I don’t even have a responsibility; just see the ball, get the ball.” In his first full season as a starter last year, Darby finished fifth on the team with 80 tackles, to go along with three interceptions — including a 70-yard touchdown return against USC in Los Angeles — and a pair of sacks for a rejuvenated Arizona State secondary that finished as one of the premiere pass defense units in all of college football. “Darby is the heart and soul of our team,” said cornerback and four-year teammate Osahon Irabor. “He’s all about defense. He’s our leader on and off the field. He’s a great person with great character. That’s like my brother. He’s a great leader and that ‘C’ on

“Darby’s very vocal, obviously, but he also leads by example,” said Co-Defensive Coordinator and Safeties Coach Chris Ball. “When you can have one of your best players come out here and practice like he does every day, that’s leading by example. That makes a huge difference, especially in my group. It shows some of the younger players what it takes to play at this level. When they can come out and see a guy like him not coasting and busting his butt every day, that’s leadership.” Darby’s leadership extends off the field too, where for the last three years he’s been an active participant in Arizona State’s Scholar Baller program while visiting various high schools throughout the Valley, mentoring young students and teaching them the value of hard work and perseverance through his own experiences. “I really care about being a giver and helping people out,” he said. “So I go to these schools just to make sure the kids are heading in the right direction and hopefully I can make an impact on their lives and they can take it from me what they should and shouldn’t do. I talk about school, community leadership, discipline, accountability and everything it takes to be successful in life.” “Anytime I see a group of people on campus getting a tour, I’ll just stop and talk to them and share, because growing up I didn’t have anybody that gave me the keys to success. I just care about helping people out in general, regardless if I know them or not.” Selflessness, humility, and determination are just a few of the traits that characterize Darby’s winning personality and help him stand out as a student-athlete, along with his playmaking abilities on the football field. As a result, Darby became the first Sun Devil player last year to earn the right to wear the Pat Tillman PT42 camouflage practice jersey, a tradition started by Graham that carries on the Tillman legacy at Arizona State and recognizes players for epitomizing the “Sun Devil way.” “It’s an honor just to be looked at in any type of category as Pat Tillman,” said Darby. “He was a guy who represented this program with honor, respect, passion, integrity, and hard work and just to be able to say Darby and Pat Tillman in the same sentence is amazing to me and I’m honored just to be out there wearing his number. I wear it with high respect and high regard for what he did for this country and this university.” Heading into the 2013 season, Darby was named to the Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list for the nation’s most outstanding defensive back as well as the Lott IMPACT

Trophy Award, which is presented to the defensive player who demonstrates the highest positive influence on the field and in the community. But for Darby, his proudest achievement since he’s been at ASU was being able to reunite with his mother and move her out of Long Beach to live with him in Tempe. “I moved her out here because it wasn’t good for her to be in California and I wanted to make sure she wasn’t getting into trouble and to get her away from all of that negativity out there,” he said. “And my older sister, she’s got four kids, so I moved the two older ones out here with me because she’s going through some things and it was a lot for her to have all four of those kids at the same time. I moved them out here, got them in school, and now my mom watches over them.” “We’ve got a great big family now. I come home every day to a clean house and a home-cooked meal every night. I love it.” AZSAL Fast Facts Alden Darby is heavily involved in the Scholar Baller Outreach Program, which calls for ASU student-athletes to develop and teach a curriculum centered around helping high school students become successful students. His nickname is “The Juice Man,” a moniker bestowed on him by head coach of sports performance Shawn Griswold for Darby’s boundless energy. Darby had a career moment against USC in 2012, returning an interception 70 yards for a touchdown at the LA Coliseum in front of family and friends. Was a two-way starter at Millikan Senior High School in Long Beach, Calif. Now a safety, Darby was a two-star rated wide receiver (by Scout.com) coming out of high school.

MACK NEWTON ON… The Real You Last week…a long-time client said to me, “You have faced so many dangerous and even life-threatening situations and made it look almost easy…Just how do you do that?” Well…first of all, it’s never easy but, my advice is to remember that whatever it is…first, think it out, think it through. For me, I make sure that I control myself emotionally first so that I don’t react emotionally in an emotionally charged or dangerous situation. It amazes me that sometimes when I have to face danger, out of nowhere courage shows up and it’s as if I’m possessed by a power to endure… to face whatever it is. My experience has taught me that when these great demands are made of me, all I have to do is to stand up and face this challenge and my strength somehow seems to expend itself to meet this difficulty and even to overcome it. If this situation involves other people, it’s important that I act appropriately because I want to get through this and make it work. The more you stand up and face difficult times and situations, the more the real you will be revealed to yourself and to the world around you. If the real you needs a little work, don’t retreat inside yourself and hide. Force yourself to step out and get better. It’s unfortunate that so many do exactly that…retreat inside themselves and hide. If only you can fearlessly accept the challenge, you’ll find that every challenge or danger you face increases your strength

Looking forward to the next 30 days, we will be in a brand new year. It’s important to use the symbolism of this new year, this new opportunity, this new time to get a new attitude, a new outlook, a new you. All consistently successful people are constantly re-inventing themselves. At least once a year and sometimes every 6 months, they e-invent themselves. Here, you re-create yourself completely and January 1st is the most opportune time to make the change. Is there anything you should be doing more of? Is there anything you should be doing less of? Is there anything you shouldn’t be doing any more at all? Most people can think of at least 2-3 traits or behaviors that they should not bring into the new year. Maybe they worked sometime in the past, but now we should just dump ‘em. Leave them in the dust. Re-invent yourself emotionally. Re-invent yourself physically. Re-invent yourself spiritually. Now is the time… become the new you. Even if last year was a great year, what worked last year is not guaranteed to work this year. It’s a new year and time for a new you. You decide in what ways you want to be different …in what ways you NEED to be different. It all comes down to how you think. It doesn’t come down to what you do, it all comes down to how you think…and how you think on a continual basis. The consistency of your thinking creates a power that is literally a force of nature…and that can’t be stopped. – Mack Newton

THE GIFT HOMEBREW As we are in the midst of the holiday season, a season for giving and receiving, a season for reflection and planning, my thoughts turn to… what else, beer. Anyway, many of you out there will be fortunate enough to receive the gift of beer this year. Perhaps some of you will receive individual, difficult to find bottles, like beers from Russian River, or maybe some of the fine offerings from Cigar City or perhaps the Smokestack Series from Boulevard Brewing. Still others will get beer of the month gifts. But there is a saying about giving fish and teaching how to fish…now I don’t really know what that means, but I think it also applies to beer. If you give a man a beer, he will be happy for the moment but if you teach him how to homebrew, then he will waste many Saturdays making beer. That means that many of you will probably be staring at a brand new homebrew kit later this month. Incidentally, if you don’t get a homebrew kit, you should go out and buy yourself one.

What are you going to do with it? That’s truly the question. Here are some key tips pulled from various sources, all from those who should know, such as the people that publish Zymurgy magazine, the American Homebrewers Association

1. Keep it Simple The vast majority of new homebrewers start with extract brewing. The first tip is to take your brew pot off the

heat when you add the malt extract, whether its syrup or dried extract. It can take a few minutes to get the extract in and leaving the heat on will more than likely scorch the bottom of your pot. You will naturally get caramelization on your brew pot but you don’t want a burnt sugar taste in your finished beer.

everything sterilized that comes into contact with the wort or beer after the boil. Having to pour a whole batch of home brew down the drain because it’s infected is the last thing you want to do when you put so much time and effort into your beer.

2. Boilovers

Siphoning is a skill that takes time to master. You need to know how to siphon properly before you start siphoning your beer. If you let lots of air into the siphon and splash the beer around you can end up with oxidized beer. It might seem a trivial thing to do but practicing beforehand without your hard crafted home brew is the best way.

3. Get proper hop utilization by boiling properly

4. Keep Things Sterile

If you start out brewing part of a beer then diluting to the desired final volume, then try to switch to full batch boiling as soon as possible. Switching to full boils as soon as you can get a big enough brew kettle will be the best thing you can do, both in terms of the taste of your home brew and being able to brew far more different styles. 7. Practice Your Siphoning

It will happen to you at some point, but try to prevent it anyway by being careful when bringing the wort to the boil. They are not fun to clean up and dangerous too. Eliminate boilovers by keeping a spray bottle with water to hand so when the wort looks like it could boil over you can spray it and hopefully settle everything back down. Don’t be in a rush and moderate the heat to bring the wort to the boil slowly.

It may seem like a long time but when a recipe or book says boil for 90 minutes or 60 minutes then do it. One of the reasons you are boiling for this length of time is to achieve the correct bitterness.

6. Boil Full Size Batches

8. Make a Yeast Starter

5. Control your fermentation temperature correctly Your yeast will almost always state an optimum fermentation temperature range. Try to stick to this as much as possible. The temperature of the wort during fermentation will not only affect the viability and behavior of the yeast but also the taste and flavor of the finished beer. Big swings in temperature are a bad idea, for example if the room gets cold at night then warm during the day. A simple way to regulate temperature if your house temperature varies a lot is to keep the fermenter in a small space like a cupboard because it doesn’t take a lot of energy to keep a smaller area at fermentation temperature. Get a simple adhesive thermometer and stick it on your fermenter.

Yeast starters are particularly good for decreasing the lag time (the time it takes between pitching the yeast and fermentation). Having your wort sitting in the fermenter for a long time before fermentation starts increases the risks of infection. A starter will mean this period is shortened and also mean healthier yeast. 9. Experiment There are so many different varieties of hops, malts and even fruits, vegetables and spices available to the home brewer. Use this diversity to the fullest and be creative by actively seeking out recipes that have vanilla in them if you like vanilla, for example. If you like a particular beer that uses a certain variety of hop substitute, then put that hop into your beers instead of using something else. You can only improve as a home brewer by knowing your ingredients and testing them out.

This is job one and with good reason. All you need to worry about is keeping

13. Have Patience

10. Try Different Yeasts.

Brewing takes time. Not only the length of time to brew and ferment your wort, but also to carbonate and mature your home brew. If you have ever opened a bottle of homebrew too early you will get the importance of this. Brewing big beers like Barley Wines and Old Ales requires patience. The only thing you can do to stop this habit is to brew more. That way you’ve always got something to drink.

Find the fridge in the home brew shop with all the different varieties of yeast. Pick up an information sheet that describes the characteristics enjoy the possibilities. Take a look at the White Labs and Wyeast websites and you can see how many strains of yeast are available. Each one will bring something different to the beer and improve your brewing. 11. Split Batches or Brew Double Experiment and have fun. One way you can quickly build up an understanding of different ingredients is to split a brew in half and pitch 2 different yeasts in each one. You can even split batches and hop them differently and compare results between different hop varieties. Understanding what each ingredient brings to the table helps you design better beers.

14. Develop Your Own Recipes Making a beer to a recipe is great. Brewing a beer you have spent time working with and researching is awesome. To begin with, you might want to take a recipe and make modifications. Put something you like in there. Make a recipe from scratch because it’s quite possible nobody has done anything like it before. 15. Go off Style This is another one about experimentation. If a style dictates that a Mild has to have a maximum of 25 IBU’s and top out at 1.038 OG, you might make a super Mild and be unconstrained by styles. You are a home brewer and one of the things that makes home brewing great is you can do what you want. Push the limits.

12. Read. Read. Read.

Finally, seek out others that can help you with your new hobby. Find a homebrew club. The largest in the country is located right here in the Phoenix Area. Contact the Arizona Society of Homerbrewers (ASH) at www. Azhomebrewers.org and get a membership. They offer advice, competitions and social events, all designed to maximize your enjoyment of brewing your own beer. If you live on the west side of Phoenix, check out Brewmeisters Anonymous at brewarizona.org.

This point is vitally important. Go out and get books like Designing Great Beers by Ray Daniels, or The Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian. Go on the forums and listen to the Brewing podcasts. You can pick something up and learn more about home brewing every day. People are always developing new techniques all the time and being able to learn these things will help you brew better beers.

TWO GREAT PLACES TO PAIR!

Hello again craft beer lovers! Today let’s chat about a few of the amazing new places in the Valley that are not only carrying great brew but also amazing food to pair. Pairing food and beer is the single greatest way to expand the enjoyment of both at the same time. Many are probably familiar with the concept of pairing food and wine, but did you know that beer makes a better alternative? Think about it. These days there are far more breweries, styles, sub styles, flavors and bitterness levels in the craft beer domain than ever before. Far more in fact than in the waning world of wine. These are my two new favorite places. House of Brews in Gilbert AZ to begin. Many of you may have been here before and even more may recall this business closing its doors a few different times. They are under new ownership and let’s just say that three times must be a charm because the lads running this joint have it together! Twenty plus handles of great American craft beer and food to die for. My suggestions include the Cheese and Meat Board or the Salmon Sliders both to pair with Odell Cutthroat Porter or Dales Pale Ale. Delish!

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

Next up is Chao, a new Asian fusion restaurant in Chandler AZ. Owned by David Fleeger, formerly of Latitude in Chandler, this place has ten handpicked craft beers on tap and great food to pair as well. Recommendations include the Pad Thai and the Pineapple Fried Rice, both to pair with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or Four Peaks Kilt Lifter. This last week was just a sneak peek, but they go “live” in just a few short days. Until next week, Cheers!

Nelson was not on his tour bus when it crashed into a bridge in Sulfur Springs, Texas last Saturday. The iconic Texan is the creative genius behind historic recordings like “Crazy,” “Hello Walls,” “Red Headed Stranger,” “Stardust,” “On the Road Again” and “Good Hearted Woman.” His career has spanned six decades. His catalog boasts more than 200 albums. He’s earned every conceivable award and honor to be bestowed a person in his profession. He has also amassed reputable credentials as an author, actor and activist. In the last five years alone Nelson delivered 10 new releases, two of which received Grammy nominations, and a career-spanning box set, released his debut novel and again headlined Farm Aid, an event he co-founded in 1985, all the while continuing to lobby against horse slaughter and produce his own blend of biodiesel fuel. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets ($60) are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www. celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext. 1. Checking in with

Jennifer Nettles

Jennifer Nettles surely is more comfortable hosting “CMA Country Christmas” this time. When she filled that role on the ABC special last year, the Sugarland vocalist was about to deliver her first baby. In the same month her son marks his first birthday, Nettles is back for her fourth round introducing a parade of country artists performing seasonal favorites in the two-hour show, which has an encore airing Saturday, Dec. 14. “One of the things I had hoped for this show was for it to become a tradition,” she says. “As a new mom, I’m hyper-aware of that now. This is what families do; they start traditions. Things start to take on a different meaning when you’re a family.” Other members of the country music “family” in the newest “CMA Country Christmas” include Lady Antebellum, Trace Adkins, Luke Bryan, Rascal Flatts, Hunter Hayes, Kellie Pickler, Darius Rucker and Jake Owen. Recent country convert Sheryl Crow also appears, as do Mary J. Blige, Lucy Hale (“Pretty Little Liars”) and Willie Robertson (“Duck Dynasty”). “Last year, I agreed to do the show at four months pregnant, not knowing what nine months might feel like,” Nettles muses. “I’m glad I did, though, because I have that time documented in a really special way. Later, I can show it to (son) Magnus and say, ‘Yep, that was your crazy mom, and there you were inside her really big belly.”’ “CMA Country Christmas” also is a prelude to Nettles’ first solo album: “That Girl” debuts Jan. 14, and she maintains it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of her Sugarland partnership with Kristian Bush. “I love what we’ve done in Sugarland. That is a part of me, but it’s not everything. What it means right now is that I can’t be in two places at one time. I’ve so wanted to be able to do a solo project, I want to give myself an open-ended timeline.”

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is more than just women stripping down to their undies. The Tuesday, Dec. 10, special on CBS is a full-on fashion show, an event, with pulsating musical numbers, grand designs and – oh, yes – those superhuman-looking women, the Victoria’s Secret Angels. Taylor Swift, Fall Out Boy and Neon Jungle perform. The sets change dramatically with each collection, from a British invasion to a shipwreck, a foggy night in Paris, an odd “anime meets the 1980s” and a winter wonderland, even if so very few women tend to wear nothing but lingerie and feathers in snowstorms. This is all about fantasy.

Emile Hirsch and Holliday Grainger star in “Bonnie & Clyde,” airing Sunday and Monday on Lifetime, History and A&E Network.

Bonnie and Clyde captivated the public as they went on a bloody bank-robbing spree 80 years ago, and Lifetime, History and A&E Network hope the public’s fascination continues as they premiere “Bonnie & Clyde” Sunday and Monday, Dec. 8 and 9. After History’s surprise huge hit with “Hatfields & McCoys,” broadcasters have been looking for another chapter of American history that resonates the same way: familiar but not too familiar. This four-hour miniseries, starring Emile Hirsch (“Into the Wild”) and Holliday Grainger (“The Borgias”), was in the works before the History hit. It has a cinematic feel and takes a few risks, particularly with showing Clyde’s sixth sense and Bonnie’s hysteria and presenting the story in a leisurely fashion. “It is a morality story and has some parallels to our modern era,” Hirsch says. “They were almost the original reality TV stars. They were playing out their lives in the media, and that is an interesting parallel.”

“I feel like something about the Bonnie and Clyde story will appeal to people for generations and generations,” Hirsch says. “It is a real love story that is flawed and tragic. As horrible as they were, the one thing that was always consistent, that never changed, was their love for each other.” The film does a great job of capturing the period, the costumes, cars and feel of the Depression. People may think they know the story well, but the miniseries aims to reveal who they were beyond the bank robberies. Clyde is shown to have suffered a serious fever as child, and after that he was said to have a sixth sense. He had visions, including one of Bonnie, long before he met her. He first saw Bonnie at her wedding, and even the fact that she was married did not deter Clyde. Bonnie is given to weeping fits, and only her mom (Holly Hunter) can calm her. Until she began working on this, Grainger was among those who thought she knew the story well.
