Take a Stroll with Niccole: Redington Pass - Tucson East Side If you have never tried hiking or biking in the Redington Pass area, I highly recommend it to all of my Tucson friends and visitors. Mountain bikers enjoy the quietness and solitude offered by the dirt pass and trails branching off for all levels of ability. The Arizona trail crosses Redington Road with some single tracks to enjoy. There are also roads for all terrain vehicles and some unofficial shooting ranges and camp grounds. I like to bring my telescope and binoculars out to Redington at night; although you leave the city lights behind you still have gorgeous night time Tucson views. Winter is the best time of year for stargazing and astrophotography. The pass also provides for a beautiful drive and great opportunity for photographers to catch the essence of the Sonoran desert. Upper Tanque Verde falls hike is one of my favorite treks, it is great in the cooler weather and especially after the rain we just received. It can be enjoyed by all levels of hikers including kids and dogs, just remember there is some boulder

climbing involved if you want to reach the higher falls. Nestled between saguaro laden desert vistas, there are 5 gorgeous waterfalls that range from 20-100 ft. The water isn’t always flowing vigorously but it is a beautiful and serene place to go in Tucson, this area cuts right between the Santa Rita Mountains and the Rincon Mountains. This hike can be a short half-hour downhill hike to the water with little ones or hours of hiking and climbing all the way to the highest fall. The rocks can be slippery so wear shoes with really good tread. To get there, head up Wilmot road until it turns into Tanque Verde road and continue all the way east until it turns into dirt, about 5 minutes onto this road you’ll reach a dirt parking area off to the left hand side. The main trail begins here on the right hand side of the street. To get to other trails for biking and hiking continue on. Get outside and take a trek this season! If you have any questions, comments or you want a schedule a private tour, email me at takeastrollwithniccole@ gmail.com.

Jennie Garth celebrates “Holidaze” in new ABC Family movie By JACquELINE CuTLER

Ho-Ho-Ho-mer in another holiday special

Jennie Garth and holiday spirit are hardly strangers to each other. Besides Christmas-themed episodes of “Beverly Hills, 90210” in which the actress appeared as Kelly Taylor, she also has made the TV movies “Secret Santa” and “A Christmas Wedding Tail” … yes, “Tail,” as in “dog’s tail.” Now, Garth is back in seasonal mode by starring in “Holidaze,” ABC Family’s newest contribution to its “25 Days of Christmas” programming as it premieres Sunday, Dec. 8. The film merges many traditional elements, with Garth playing a workaholic who returns to her hometown on a mission that’s business, at least to begin with. A reunion with a former beau (Cameron Mathison, a “Dancing With the Stars” alum as Garth is) and an accident that has her thinking she’s living a totally different life – as the wife of the ex-boyfriend – change the trip, and the holiday, drastically for the woman. “This one was finally a good one,” the pleasant Garth says with a knowing laugh about tackling a Christmas story again. “I’ve done a couple that weren’t so good, but this one had good production values. We shot it in Toronto, and we had a great cast.” Mary Kay Place (“The Big Chill”) also is featured, and Garth notes she’s proud of the result. A big advantage was that “Holidaze” actually was filmed in winter, whereas many Christmas ventures for television are made in summer or early fall to meet holiday air dates. “It was real snow, and we were dealing with the real cold,” Garth confirms. “We did this last January, so the Christmas decorations were just left up a little longer.” And the result “works,” Garth maintains: “It’s a classic holiday tale of somebody finding their conscience, and I want to see that every year. It’s that Scrooge story, and this is just a different perspective on it. And I think different people will relate to it.” Garth’s work for ABC Family is extending beyond “Holidaze”: She’s just filmed the pilot for “Mystery Girls,” a project that reunites her with her “90210”-mate and close friend Tori Spelling, with both of them also serving as executive producers. For now, Garth is looking forward to as much holiday time as she can spend with her three daughters. “This is totally a movie they can see,” she says in regard to “Holidaze.” “There’s one scene where there’s some kissing and whatever, but it’s ‘PG’ (in tone), so it’s definitely a movie that I’m happy to show my girls. And they’re so excited that it’s on ABC Family, especially during this whole ’25 Days of Christmas’ run. That’s advertised so much, they go, ‘Oh! Look!’ ”

When you think “The Simpsons” and holidays, it’s Halloween’s Treehouse of Horror. Yet the Sunday, Dec. 15, episode, “White Christmas Blues,” is the Fox mainstay’s 16th Christmas episode. In this one, “because of global warming, there is no snow in America -- except for Springfield,” executive producer Al Jean says. “It is the atmospheric condition because of how polluted the air is,” Jean says. People flock from everywhere to spend a white Christmas in Springfield. With so many tourists in town, stores drive up their prices to gouge everyone. Marge wants to give her family a nice holiday, so decides to earn money herself by turning their house into a bed and breakfast. During one fantasy sequence, the baby Jesus attends the Cornell School of Hotel Management, Jean says. The venture quickly becomes disastrous and destroys the holiday for the Simpsons. To try to entertain their guests, the Simpsons watch many dreadful TV holiday specials, including “the snow king who ate his children.” While many specials hit us over the head with the true meaning of Christmas, “What we’re trying to do is a backspin on the Christmas is too commercial,” Jean says. “We say, ‘Christmas isn’t commercial enough.’ ” Homer certainly thinks so when Lisa gives him radish seeds for her present. And for Simpsons’ Christmas past, the episodes were: “Simpsons Roasting on an open Fire” (12/17/89), “Mr. Plow” (11/19/92), “Marge Be Not Proud” (12/17/95), “Miracle on Evergreen Terrace” (12/21/97) and “Grift of the Magi” (12/19/99). “Homer vs. Dignity” (11/26/00), “Skinner’s Sense of Snow” (12/17/00), “She of Little Faith” (12/16/01), “Dude, Where’s My Ranch?” (4/27/03) and “ ‘Tis the Fifteenth Season” (12/14/03). “Simpsons Christmas Stories” (12/18/05), “Kill Gil Volumes I & II” (12/17/06), “The Burns and the Bees” (12/7/08), “The Fight Before Christmas” (12/5/10), “Holidays of Future Passed” (12/11/11) and “White Christmas Blues” (12/15/13).

MOVIE TWEETS!

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

Still haven’t seen that movie that your friends have been talking about? Film Columnist Randy Montgomery recaps what you may have missed in 140 characters or less.

‘12 Years a Slave’ ~ A tough watch and an emotional rollercoaster. Early pick for Best Picture, Actor and Supporting Actress. Grade: A

‘All Is Lost’ ~ If you can manage to sit through nearly two hours of Robert Redford floating on a raft, you’ll be rewarded with a fine performance. Grade: B

‘Bad Grandpa’ ~ A raucous good time that is an all-out laugh riot from start to finish. Rude, crude and all-out hilarious. Grade: A

‘Frozen’

‘Black Nativity’

Kristen Bell plays a fearless optimist who, when a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, teams up with extreme mountain man (Jonathan Groff) on an epic journey to find her sister the Snow Queen (Idina Menzel), and put an end to her icy spell. (PG - 108 minutes)

Jacob Latimore plays a streetwise teen who reluctantly spends Christmas with his estranged relatives (Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett) and, with new friends and a little divine intervention, discovers the true meaning of faith, healing and family. (PG - 93 minutes)

Stan: Clearly establishing a difference between Disney animated films and the Disney/Pixar animated stories, ‘Frozen’ grabs hold, with both story and song, and doesn’t let go. A high point for this reviewer, actress/singer/songwriter Idina Menzel who’s signature song ‘I Stand’ is an absolute favorite, delivers a wide range of emotions with her voice and song in the ‘feel good’ film of the year for the whole family.

Stan: Expecting the usual holiday themed movie, was pleasantly surprised by the poignancy of the cast as many of the key sequences are presented in the ‘Les Misérables’ musical style with characters that became endearing to our hearts as we hoped they could rise above their pain of years past and look to what they have, right now, to move forward with living life.

Joseph: “Frozen” is not only the best animated adventure of the year but also a remarkably triumphant return to form for the studio as it stuns with breathtakingly beautiful visuals, magnificent musical numbers, wonderfully fun characters and a simple-yet-engaging story with a meaningful message about exuding love that is essential to audiences of all ages.

‘Dallas Buyer’s Club’ ~ If for no other reason, see this film to see Matthew McConaughey’s performance. A sure-fire contender for Best Actor. Grade: A

‘Nebraska’ ~ Simple, yet profoundly moving. Alexander Payne’s best film. Dern and Squibb shine and Will Forte like you have never seen him. Grade: A+

‘The Best Man Holiday’ ~ Go in with low expectations and you may just enjoy it. The official start of the bad Christmas movie season. Grade: C+

©2013 Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co., Chippewa Falls, WI * Beer

There is a new brewer in town who Vanilla_2013_4-5x5_01011-6 JC.indd has been on the scene for a long LN_Snowdrift time. John Adkisson, of Iron John’s Brewing Company, has been playing with beer for over 20 years in Tucson. He was the lead brewer at the Habaneros Brewery at La Paloma in the late 90’s before spending a year at the Nimbus Brewing Company.

11/1/13 4:27 PM

John followed up by becoming a Certified Beer Judge and winning two final round Gold Medals in 2000 and 2001 in the National Homebrew Competition. Iron John’s Brewing Company is the culmination of this brewer’s journey. The brewery’s bottle shop will offer an ever-changing selection based on the whims of the season. For the full story check out the January 1st Zocalo!

The Address and 1702 will be opening a bottle shop and tasting room in the very near future! This week we would like thank all beer enthusiasts for their amazing palates and as a reminder: 1702 will be closed Nov. 28th - Dec. 1st.
