Bill Cosby of “Bill Cosby: Far From Finished” on Comedy Central “None. No, if you are asking about the big four, there may be some things, documentaries that will show up that are very, very well done on TV, and there are some wonderful things that show up on HBO and ... ‘30 for 30’ on ESPN.”

“Went With the Wind!” If there is an iconic “Carol Burnett Show” moment, it’s Burnett’s comic take on Scarlett O’Hara’s dress of repurposed draperies – complete with curtain rod – in her “Gone With the Wind” parody. “the Family” Shrill Southerner Eunice, her hapless husband (Harvey Korman) and cranky mother (Vicki Lawrence), were as unlikable an ensemble as comedy has ever seen. Burnett, however, put the “fun” in “dysfunction,” imbuing Eunice with heart and even heroism. nora Desmond As only she could, Burnett took Gloria Swanson’s portrayal of terminally delusional silent-film star Norma Desmond from “Sunset Boulevard” and cranked it up to 11. With spot-on cartoonish delivery, not to mention makeup that looked as if it had been applied with a trowel by a nearsighted ape, she turned Swanson’s so-sad-it’sscary character into a figure of fun.

CITY! COVER STORY MANNY “PAC-MAN” PACQUIAO RETURNS TO THE RING TO BATTLE BRANDON “BAM BAM” RIOS IN MACAO Saturday, November 23rd on COX Arizona Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO) looks to rebound from back-to-back losses, one controversial, one definitive, when he returns to the ring and fights for the first time in Macao, China this Saturday night on HBO pay-per-view and COX Arizona for fight fans here in the valley, facing Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO) in a 12-round welterweight battle. A surefire matchup of thrilling fighting styles, boxing enthusiasts around the globe can count on plenty of fireworks at a lightning fast pace when Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios and Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao square off November 23rd. When the two most explosive fighters in the world collide, many will be wondering which Manny Pacquiao will show. When “Pac-Man” got knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez in December 2012, there was no bracing, by him or by us. One second Pacquiao was bouncing on his toes, about to head into the second half of the fight with a comfortable lead over his Mexican

rival; the next second he had bounced directly into unconsciousness. We had no time to prepare ourselves for what we were seeing. There were simply no words. It was perhaps the most shocking image in all of sports, a boxer previously thought to be simply invincible, immediately down and out. The 11 months since have offered us plenty of time to wonder. We fully understand what we saw last December: an all-time great fighter walking into a perfect punch. What we don’t fully understand yet is what the future implications are. How much of Manny Pacquiao was left in that MGM Grand Garden Arena ring? Is Manny Pacquiao still one of the best fighters in the world, or did one punch rob him of everything that made him special?

Brandon Rios is a fascinating fighter in his own right – and has vowed to end Pacquiao’s career when the pair square off for the vacant WBO international welterweight title. Aiming to return to winning ways following a decision defeat to Mike Alvarado in March, Rios believes he is far hungrier than the former eightdivision world champion. “Pacquiao has done great. No one can say he didn’t because he won world titles at eight weights. But it’s time he should call it quits. It’s time for me,” Rios told Sky Sports. “I’m young, I’m hungry and I want it. I want the success. I want to beat the best to be the best and to be recognized as one of the best. And so that’s why I’m going to win.”

professional fights, was for the WBO light-welterweight title. However, the American known as “Bam Bam” believes the step up to welterweight level will not faze him, and that he plans to fight at 147 pounds in the future. On the flipside, Pacquiao is looking to recover from successive defeats after first losing his WBO title to Timothy Bradley in 2012 before being knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez on his last outing. But on November 23rd at the Cotai Arena in Macau, he is mostly there to answer our questions about Manny Pacquiao - to either tell us it’s game over for “Pac-Man” or to make the Filipino look like a true menacing force of nature once again. TONY AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL MASTERPIECE EVITA HEADING TO ASU GAMMAGE Experience the passion and seduction in this elegant masterpiece, Tony Award®-winning musical EVITA. EVITA opens at ASU Gammage on December 3 and runs through December 8, for a limited engagement! Directed by Tony and Olivier Awardwinner Michael Grandage and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Rob Ashford, this is the first new Broadway production of the seven-time Tony Award-winning musical, since it debuted on Broadway more than 30 years ago. Eva Perón used her beauty and charisma to rise meteorically from the slums of Argentina to the presidential mansion as First Lady. Adored by her people as a champion for the poor, she became one of the most powerful women in the world — while her greed, outsized ambition and fragile health made her one of the most tragic. EVITA tells Eva’s passionate and unforgettable true story, and features

some of theater’s most beautiful songs, including “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “High Flying, Adored.” Produced by Hal Luftig, Scott Sanders and Troika Entertainment, the creative team includes Tony Award-winning scenic and costume designer Christopher Oram, Tony Awardwinning lighting designer Neil Austin, Olivier Awardwinning sound designer Mick Potter, wig and hair designer Richard

Mawbey, projection designer Zachary Borovay and music supervisor/director Kristen Blodgette. Orchestrations are by Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Cullen, and dance arrangements are by David Chase.

Tickets to EVITA are available at the ASU Gammage Box Office, by calling 480-965-3434 or ticketmaster. com. Ticket prices start at $25. Visit www.asugammage.com for more information.

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE

ABOUT THE FILM

COLUMNISTS STAN ROBINSON

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Nebraska’

‘The Armstrong Lie’

‘Cold Turkey’

Filmmaker Alex Gibney chronicles sports legend Lance Armstrong’s improbable rise and ultimate fall from grace. (R - 122 minutes)

Alicia Witt plays an estranged daughter who makes a surprise visit home for Thanksgiving and clashes with her stepmother (Cheryl Hines) and sister (Sonya Walger) while her half-brother (Ashton Holmes) tries to keep a massive gambling debt a secret. Meanwhile, the family patriarch (Peter Bogdanovich) has his own dramatic news to share. (NR - 84 minutes)

Stan: Filmmaker Alex Gibney, who brought us an insightful middle of the road view with his exceptional documentary ‘We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks’ earlier this year, gives us the insight as he brings the viewer ‘up close and personal’ behind the soundbites and news clips surrounding the cancer defeating cycling legend, and, the all important question – Why lie…

Joseph: You know what they say: It’s not really Thanksgiving until somebody gets stabbed with a fork. It is always entertaining to see someone else’s family selfdestruct during the holidays - and the one in “Cold Turkey” does so catastrophically. Best of all, writer/ director Will Slocombe does not sugar coat his ending, honoring the fact that family feuds lead to lonely lives.

Will Forte plays a man who grudgingly agrees to drive his tempestuous father (Bruce Dern) to Nebraska to claim a million dollar prize that he is convinced that he has won via a magazine sweepstakes. (R - 110 minutes) Stan: The year of ‘Veteran Actors’ continues with a veteran of more than 50 years of roles and the father of actress Laura Dern of ‘Jurassic Park’ fame, Bruce Dern. Under the sure hand of director Alexander Payne, the central themes of understanding and sharing the feelings of family members while respecting their individuality makes ‘Nebraska’ a poignant lesson on living life. Joseph: “Nebraska” is an extremely simple but exceptionally special feature film. Rewarding patient viewers with one of the most lifeaffirming movie moments of the year, director Alexander Payne’s new dramedy also teaches empathy, encouraging each and every one of us to embrace our family members’ eccentricities and never take away anyone’s dignity by denying them.

RANDY MONTGOMERY

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With more than 22 years of experience in media production, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. E-mail him at Movies@StanRobinson.org.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actor Bob Odenkirk (‘Nebraska’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“You try to bring a dignity to every character you play. You try to see them as a whole person - not just one side of them. So when you have got a character like Ross, who is an egotistical and judgmental guy, you sort of try to see another side of him. Thankfully, Bob Nelson’s screenplay and Alexander Payne’s amazing direction attempts to show all sides of everyone as well. “So when you are being the egotistical newscaster, you try to make him real; make him somebody who, while you can laugh at him and his pretensions, you kind of see yourself in and go, ‘Well I am also trying to be something in this world.’

You have an understanding for him. “I sympathize with Ross and I think that he is not wrong to be angry at his father. But I do think that once you let it out and say how you feel, you have got to move on to another place and try to have some empathy for the people in your family. You have got to forgive your family for being who they are. They are not perfect - and neither are you. “[Alexander Payne] basically said that it was just how he saw it when he read [Bob Nelson’s] screenplay. He just saw it in his head in black and white, which is a good, organic, natural instinct to follow. But I think

that it also makes sense because it is a very simple story - cranky dad goes on road trip with generous son and crazy capers happen along the way. It is a very simple story. “And the landscape of Nebraska is kind of simple - farmhouses and barns and lots and lots of empty space with pastureland and silos here and there. You get this beautiful vista that is very simplified by the black and white - just like the story. But it is filled with emotion and feeling and longing and I think it works beautifully. It is a really beautiful film.” - Bob Odenkirk

‘Behind-the-Scenes’ – ‘The Book Thief’ By Stan Robinson

underground, and reminiscent of the classic film ’The Diary of Anne Frank’ (1959), director Brian Percival presents a stark, foreboding, view that many have only read about historically, as the world of Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nélisse) is turned upside down with foster care placement and the outbreak of WWII. With very good performances by the cast, the film tugs at one’s heart every moment of the viewing. (PG-13 125 minutes).

In ‘The Book Thief’, Sophie Nélisse playa a spirited young girl who, sent to live with a foster family in WWII Germany, begins collecting books and, with the help of her new parents (Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson) and a secret guest under the stairs (Ben Schnetzer), learns to read and creates a magical world that inspires them all. With a view from the German side of the war, and the citizens who had to seek shelter in basements and

OCTANE RACEWAY IS THE FIRST RACETRACK IN THE UNITED STATES TO FEATURE ADVANCED MODEL ELECTRIC RACE KARTS of a new high-performance lightweight chassis. Drivers of all sizes will have a comfortable driving experience with fully adjustable pedals, seats and tilt steering wheels. LED brake lights are a standard feature on the kart.

Black Friday deals kick off the holiday season with guests driving the exclusive Sodi RTX for free Octane Raceway is the first racetrack in the United States to debut a powerful electric kart model – the Sodi RTX, and the venue will be the exclusive raceway in the Phoenix-area to offer this driving experience. An entire new fleet of karts is being delivered to the Scottsdale track this month giving kart racing enthusiasts enhanced features and performance. As the new karts arrive in time for the holidays, Octane is offering a handful of Black Friday shoppers a free race in the new karts on November 29. In the spirit of the season, Octane will also begin their annual Toys for Tots toy drive, which runs through December 20. “We are thrilled to kick off this year’s holiday season with a new driving experience for our guests,” says Scott Sanders, president of Octane Raceway. “Being the first racetrack in the country to feature the new Sodi RTX karts is really exciting for us. I visited the Sodi headquarters in France last year to closely inspect the new design, its handling and performance capabilities and was definitely impressed. Although we had planned to have the new karts available when we opened in Scottsdale this past summer, we are confident that they are worth the wait.” The new karts utilize state-of-theart technology to deliver speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. The kart was designed using ENGEC electric technology, which has opened up new horizons in kart racing because it is able to deliver 10,000 RPM for maximum torque. Another feature that sets this kart apart from the pack is the perfect balance achieved from the center-mounted engine. Handling and acceleration are significantly improved from previous models with the addition

in the United States, Octane boasts many activities where guests can drive, dine, meet, relax and enjoy. Open 364 days a year to the general public, the venue is located in Scottsdale at the Pavilions at Talking Stick, 9119 E. Indian

Fueling the holiday spirit and encouraging toy donations to Toys for Tots, the first 29 guests that give an unwrapped toy at Octane Raceway on November 29 will receive one free race in the new Sodi RTX racing karts. Adding extra incentives to the busiest shopping day of the year, Octane will also have Black Friday specials good all day, which include $75 gift cards for $50 and $150 gift cards for only $100. The venue opens early on Black Friday and is offering $10 races from 9am to 11am. Toys for Tots serves more than 100,000 children in Maricopa County welcoming gifts of unwrapped, new toys for boys and girls up to 18 years of age. Through the Toys for Tots program, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve distributes toys to less fortunate children throughout the 9,400 square mile area they cover while bringing a message of hope. The goal of the program is to help develop one of the nation’s most valuable resources, our children, and assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens. “This year has marked many milestones for Octane Raceway. We moved into our new Scottsdale facility in July, we celebrated Octane’s tenth anniversary in October and we are now able to offer the only Sodi RTX racing experience in the country,” adds Sanders on the events of 2013. “We hope that those coming in to race the new karts will also support Toys for Tots by donating a toy. We’ve set a goal of 500 toys that we would love to give to this tremendous organization. Giving back to Toys for Tots is a perfect way to bring this monumental year to a close.” Since 2003 Octane Raceway has been thrilling guests with high-speed kart racing. Travelling at up to 45 miles per hour, guests navigate through a series of straight-aways and switchbacks. The only permanent indoor and outdoor kart racing venue

MACK NEWTON ON… Maturity I have been influenced by many men and women throughout my life. Some have been very famous, some very well-known and some, although very accomplished, are practically unknown. Doctor and Brig General William C. Menninger would fall into the last category. I don’t know of many people who have heard of him at all. Before he joined the United States Army at the outset of World War II, he worked as a psychiatrist at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, specializing in the treatment of behavioral disorders. He wrote on this and a variety of related topics throughout his career. Somewhere in the mid-1990’s, I came across a copy of a short essay he wrote back in the early 1960’s entitled, “The Criteria of Emotional Maturity”. The chances of me ever coming across and reading that article written by a man who was born in 1899 and passed away in 1966 were slim to none. But I came across it and read it - and oh my how it ever did change my life.

Having dealt with a severe anger problem for most of my adult life, Dr. Menninger’s discussion of one’s ability to deal constructively with reality really hit home for me. I saw it as having the emotional maturity to control anger… not get angry in the first place so that I could settle differences without violence and angry outbursts. That did and continues to have a major impact on my relationships. He mentioned maturity as having the capacity to adapt to change. I saw this as having the capacity to face unpleasant situations and deal with frustration, discomfort and even defeat without falling apart and complaining about how it wasn’t my fault or just collapsing in utter despair.

Certainly I knew the word ‘maturity’, but that word was not at work in my life providing me with a foundation to build upon. Maturity is the ability to make a decision and stand by it. Choose and take a stand. I mean, declare what your life will “be”…and when you do that… “what to do” becomes very obvious. The immature, without making a choice or taking a stand, spend their entire lives exploring endless possibilities…and then do nothing. I know… been there, done that. Another element of maturity, almost casually mentioned by Dr. Menninger is patience. Patience, not in the sense of just waiting for the world to save you, but in your willingness to pass up on immediate pleasure or gratifications in favor of long-term gain. Brian Tracey called it; “short-term pain for long-term gain.” You must remember that the pain is unavoidable… but the suffering is optional. And, suffering is always a consequence of not choosing. When you boil it all down to the real meaning and effectiveness in one’s life… maturity means dependability. It means keeping your word. It means doing what you said you were going to do and coming through in a crisis. It means coming through when the chips are down and everything depends on you. Not only do you do it, but the mature do it with class and style. My experience has shown me that the immature are masters of the alibi and the excuse… they lead lives that are confused and disorganized. In their wake are a trail of broken promises, former friends, unfinished business and good intentions which never materialize. The mature feel the pull of humility in the face of their accomplishments and they can look at the world and see beyond themselves while never letting setbacks make them question their purpose. The mature have mastered the art of living in peace with that which we cannot change. Isn’t it about time we all accelerate the maturation process? BEER!

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

WELCOME BACK AVERY Avery Brewing made its triumphant return to Arizona last week. That’s right, after 30 months without those award winning beers, we can now enjoy their full line up of year round, seasonal and limited release beers. Teaming up with distributor Crescent Crown, the Avery Brewing Co. is again selling beer in Arizona. Avery returned with two packed parties, one held at Papago Brewing in Scottsdale and the other at Moto in Phoenix. Valley beer fans may recall that Moto broke out several Avery kegs it was cellaring for an Adios Avery party when the brewer left the state in 2011. They also hosted an outstanding Demons and Dictators party featuring all six of the beers from these two seasonal release lines that Avery offers. The Moto party on Friday night featured just the regularly available brands, but patrons did not care. Happy just to have the likes of White Rascal and Ellie’s Brown available again, the crowd loved every drop. Papago had the first Welcome Back party the night before and played to another packed house. In addition to the core brands, somebody dug deep

into the cooler and pulled out some special treats, 2006 Mephistopheles and 2007 Samael’s Oak Aged Ale. But, the real highlight of both events was the appearance of Adam Avery who came to Arizona to celebrate the return of his namesake brewery. The last time Phoenix hosted Adam was around 2005 when he appeared on a panel discussing Extreme Beers at Papago. That panel, which included Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head, Tomme Arthur of Port Brewing and The Lost Abbey, Andy Ingram of Four Peaks, Derek Osborne of BJ’s Brewing and Jim Scussel of Oak Creek, was an event to remember. The discussion was lively and the beers were certainly extreme. It has been fondly recalled as one of the better events ever held in Arizona. “I missed Arizona,” said Adam Avery, the brewery’s president, CEO and brewmaster. “One of my favorite events ever was with Ron and Leah at Papago. I feel really fortunate and grateful that they have offered to host our return party. I can’t wait to have beers with them tonight.”

Arizona was one of eight states that Avery pulled out of in April 2011. At that time the brewery faced skyrocketing demand in its home market that outpaced the its ever-expanding production capabilities. Since then, Avery has increased capacity at its existing facility and has plans for a new brewery that are coming along quickly. The result is that Avery has enough beer to return to some markets including Arizona. “Arizona has always been so good to us. It hurt to leave our partners and fans there back in 2011,” Adam said. “I think the Crescent Crown team understood at the time why we left. They continued to visit the brewery often and stayed in touch. They knew we would return to Arizona and that when we did it would be with Crescent Crown.” Chuck Noll of Crescent Crown said he couldn’t be happier about Avery’s long awaited return. “Avery is one of those brands that sells, every beer geek knows them, and there’s already been a lot of excitement about their return to Arizona. There’s always been a great craft beer culture here in Arizona and in recent years it has really exploded. It’s a much different scene than three years ago- more local and quality

driven. Avery is going to fit right in and will complement our existing portfolio.” Avery is returning to Arizona with an extensive line up of cans, bottles and kegs. The beers in that line up include the brewery’s flagships of Avery IPA and White Rascal Belgian Style White Ale as well as Ellie’s Brown Ale, Joe’s Pilsner, and the The Holy Trinity of Ales series—Hog Heaven Dry-Hopped Barley Wine Style Ale, Salvation Belgian-Style Golden Ale and The Reverend Belgian-Style Quadrupel Ale. In addition we expect to see their complete lineup of seasonal releases including Maharaja, The Beast, Karma, New World Porter and many more. Hints were also dropped that we will probably have just a little of their barrel aged specialties available…sought after beers like Uncle Jacob’s Stout and the ever popular Rumpkin. Time will tell on those. Expect to see all of Avery’s great beers starting this week at all of the best craft beer retailers. In a craft market that is exploding with new brands, many of which were unheard of until they showed up on store shelves, it is exciting to see an old friend back in town. Avery Brewing, we missed you. Welcome back.

On the 8th-9th of November, roughly 30,000 people came together in perfect weather and celebrated with artists Kaskade, Calvin Harris, Krewella, and Umek to name a few. Walking in to Tinker Field in Orlando, Florida, you could feel the positive vibes in the air, it was if you could touch it. Everywhere you looked, there was a smile to be seen. Carnival rides lined the field between all 3 stages, graffiti artists sprayed an abandoned truck to glow under a blacklight, and theatrical performers amused the crowd - providing pictures and memories that will last a lifetime. Friends, family, and even strangers roamed the festival together singing and chanting to their favorite tunes. It was one of those, “You had to be there” kind of experiences. The people, the music, the overall setting, was just right. Insomniac once again delivered a show like none other to their headliners, “You” as their motto rings true.

Talking Turkey…. and Wine

By Rhonni Moffitt, Publisher AZ Wine Lifestyle Every November, as Thanksgiving rolls around, a popular conundrum occurs: what wine should be paired with the traditional Tom Turkey. The other concern is the variety of items that may appear on your Thanksgiving holiday dinner table—yams, stuffing, scalloped potatoes—may individually pair better with different wines. What’s a host to do?

Also Makes a Fun & Unique Gift

The first recommendation is to not pigeonhole yourself into finding the magical perfect pairing. Generally, your guests will have different likes and dislikes when it comes to wine, separate from any pairing concerns. Think about having wines to please all their palates and think of the pairing second. Have the option of sweet, white or red wines available and let your guests choose.

a good Pinot Noir, also light in tannin. The lightness of these reds will also help match the pairings of some of your lighter accompaniments and not overpower their flavor. For your white wine lovers, choose ones with a richer character to match the fat in the turkey, such as a fullbodied oakey Chardonnay or Viognier. Surprisingly, you can also go the opposite direction and try to cut some of the fat by choosing a light Sauvignon Blanc. Avoid a New Zealand-style, super acidic Sauvignon Blanc, but instead search for an elegant, crisp California or French Bordeaux variety. Or choose a nice, dry sparkling wine. The bubbles can help clear your palate, helping you enjoy every delectable morsel of the bird. Some other ideas… a light but slightly spicy Gewurztraminer or a slightly sweeter Riesling (not too sweet). Think light acidity when looking for your white wine matches.

Now for the pairings… While most people might immediately think, “Poultry pairs with white wine,” in the case of your holiday turkey, it could just as easily pair with a red wine… and probably actually pairs better with a red. Don’t go with a super tannic wine, such as many Bordeaux varietals, but think Grenache, Zinfandel (avoid “in your face” Zins for after the meal) or Sangiovese. All of these wines tend to be lighter in nature but, if you choose the right one, may have subtle nuances such as spice or earth. Or maybe try

Keep your dessert wines ready to pair with pumpkin pie or pecan pie. Instead of a traditional port, try a sherry, such as Pedro Ximenez. Another great choice might be a late harvest Riesling or ice wine, all great lighter options that will enhance the delight of your guests and create a perfect ending to your family affair. Happy Thanksgiving! Cheers from AZ Wine Lifestyle!

Checking in with Michael Ealy Airing Mondays on Fox, “Almost Human” stars Karl Urban as troubled LAPD Detective John Kennex in 2048, where he is teamed with a humanappearing android prototype called Dorian (Michael Ealy). Kennex already hates the emotionless MX-43 androids that are partnered with every human detective, and he’s not crazy about getting a discontinued model that displays humanlike emotions. During an interview at a Beverly Hills hotel, Ealy’s facial expression betrays the answer to a comment about androids not having a personal life. Read on at your peril. “I gave it up,” he says. “I gave it up quick, didn’t I? I was terrible. Yeah, he does. He definitely does. It’s a slow burn. It’s his own thing. I’m going to learn as we keep going, but there’s definitely a slow burn, something in Dorian’s past, what he’s been through, what he’s doing. “What is he doing with this secondchance opportunity? There will be moments when Dorian goes away from John, away from the case and does his own thing. I think it’s his own thing. How do I word it? He’s looking for someone.” Ealy recognized that, while Dorian’s apparent innocence is beguiling, underneath is a void that may upend the android’s future. “A lot of people that saw the pilot,” says Ealy, “find Dorian endearing. There’s something kind of tragic, though, about a droid with feelings who feels he‘s not enough until he becomes human … but he cannot become human.” While the tin man may not have a heart, he may have found a friend.

By Kate O’Hare

“The audience is now more accustomed to the contrived buddy thing,” Ealy says, “lack of a real friendship, more invested in who’s sleeping with who, who’s shooting who. That’s not where we are at all.” Birth date: Aug. 3, 1973, in Washington, D.C. The 2013 American Music Awards

ashion experts advise that the perfect black dress can go from a funeral to a wedding by switching from subdued pumps and a blazer to stilettos and a wrap. While the perfect LBD can go almost anywhere, it’s not enough – regardless of accessories – for some events, such as the 2013 American Music Awards, airing Sunday, Nov. 24, on ABC. For this, performers need creations, not mere outfits. They need looks. At this writing, Miley Cyrus, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga were among those scheduled to perform live from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre. They all recognize the value of wild costumes. Not everyone can pull off a look that screams punk gladiator visiting from the future. It really takes an excess of attitude, and Nicki Minaj has it. She performed in this at the 2011 awards show, and it’s impressive she could move at all.

Joan Jett performs in the Macy’s thanksgiving Day Parade thursday on nBc.

LOOK! SECTION

By Jacqueline cutler

So what if Christmas decorations popped up on store shelves before Halloween? The season officially begins Thursday at 9 a.m. with the parade. Yes, this is one of the few things in life so famous that it can be referred to that generally. Specifically, it is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, Nov. 28. For those keeping track, this is the 87th parade (it began in 1924 but was suspended 1942-44 during World War II). For three hours on NBC-Thursday morning, it’s a fair bet most people are watching “Today” regulars Al Roker, Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie chat about the lineup that includes the cast of “Duck Dynasty,” Cirque du Soleil and Florida Georgia Line. Jimmy Fallon and the Roots jam with the cast of “Sesame Street.” The Rockettes will high-kick in front of the landmark 34th Street store, and casts from Broadway’s “Motown: The Musical,” “Matilda” and “The Sound of Music Live!” are scheduled to perform. To mark the 75th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz,” a 47-foot-high hot-air balloon emblazoned with the film’s characters debuts. Look closely in the balloon’s basket – a young woman is trying to get back to Kansas. Some 50 million are expected to watch at home while an anticipated 3.5 million will line the parade route. “That’s what everybody does that day,” says Kellie Pickler, who will perform her new single, “Little Bit Gypsy.” “Every kid that watches the parade thinks that it would be fun to be there and see the parade in person,” Pickler says. “Sometimes the best seats are the ones at home on your couch.” Pickler is preparing to be in her first parade, as is Joan Jett, who’s performing from her new album, “Unvarnished.” Jett, who lives in New York, is going to be on a float from South Dakota. The Mount Rushmore state’s secretary of state, a major Blackhearts fan, invited her. Though the parade usually features country, pop and Broadway, Jett was pleased to bring a punkier sound to the party. “When we play around the country, in all sorts of places, I am always pretty astounded by the variety of audience we attract playing our kind of rock and roll,” Jett says. “All ages, all stripes of political persuasion. Music transcends a lot of those barriers, which is what I think music is supposed to do. It is supposed to bring them together rather than pull them apart.” That’s precisely what this parade does. While so many parades that wend through Manhattan celebrate specific cultures, the Thanksgiving parade embraces all. Plus, it just makes people happy. Witness John Piper, vice president of Macy’s Parade Studio. “How could you not be excited?” he asks. Among the new attractions this year are new Snoopy and SpongeBob SquarePants balloons, as well as a 72foot-long Toothless from “How to Train Your Dragon.”
