Take a Stroll with Niccole: Tucson Mountain Park - Siphon trail to Orcutt trail If you desire to experience the quintessential desert hike or bike ride this winter, head out west on Speedway Boulevard until it turns into the winding and beautiful Gates Pass road. There are so many trails out here it’s easy to get lost or take a different trail than you had planned. Most of the trails are very similar for hiking, but for biking, do a little research before you take one on because there are trails for all different levels. Many of the trails are marked with nothing but G and a number but there are some maps posted in a few scenic view areas to help you out. We went out and took trail G9 which is Siphon trail. It is a very short trail that merges into some jeep tracks. Along this path you will find very

little wildlife but some of the most beautiful creatures on the planet, saguaros. There are mountains of them, hundreds of years old, and many fallen skeletons which are interesting in themselves. This is a great place for biking, hiking and trail running. For beginning mountain biking take Siphon trail to the jeep tracks for a nice easy climb with no technical spots to maneuver. On Orcutt trail itself you will find some very technical areas in sandy washes and some heart racing climbs and descents. Tucson Mountain Park is beautiful with its majestic desert scenery, however, it is an area I avoid during the summer heat as it has no relief from the relentless sun. Get outside and take a trek this season!

within the park. Hikers need to bring plenty of water, sunscreen and wear appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes and a hat. Says hike leader Ranger Margie Sanchez, “You might want to bring binoculars and a camera, too. These hikes are a great opportunity for wildlife sightings and photo ops.” Hikes start at various places throughout the park - inquire at the gate for starting points.

The pre-conference activities will kick off with Paint & Pasties, a fundraising event to be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Nov. 9, at Fluxx Studio & Gallery, 414 E. Ninth St. The unique 18-and-up affair will feature an art show

Paint & Pasties also marks the kickoff of ticket sales for the April conference, with a special premier early-bird rate of $45 per person available to attendees (tickets will increase Nov. 10 to the early-bird rate of $50). Despite having a long way to go in their fundraising effort, Baker and her volunteers are confident that the Body Love Conference’s promise of community, empowerment and love will draw women together and ignite a body-positivity revolution. “This has never been done before,” Baker points out. “This is going to make history.”

Answers:

When acclaimed blogger Jes Baker (aka The Militant Baker) posted an open letter to Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries, she had no idea she was about to start a revolution. When the provocative photo series she enclosed with that letter went viral, she was ecstatic. When the “TODAY” show called, Baker was over the moon – but knew she wanted more. As Baker wrote in her blog, TheMilitantBaker.com: “Someone recently asked me in an interview, ‘What do you love about yourself?’ and I was stumped. I tried to wrap my words around some thoughts but they all felt superficial and insufficient. But today ... it came to me. What do I love about me? I love that I am the change I want to see in the world.”

with live painting and models from 8 to 10 p.m. followed by burlesque, “boylesque” and cabaret from 10 p.m. to midnight. All proceeds from Paint & Pasties will go toward funding the Body Love Conference with a suggested donation of from $5 to $20. “We’re looking to raise about $14,000 overall,” Baker says. All money raised will help cover speakers’ travel expenses and the conference space itself inside the UA’s Student Union.

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE

‘How I Live Now’

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

Saoirse Ronan plays an American girl who, while on holiday in the English countryside with her family, finds herself in hiding and fighting for her survival as the third world war breaks out. (R - 100 minutes) Joseph: In addition to taking viewers on a compelling survivalist journey, “How I Live Now” has a strong spiritual message. Unfortunately, said message is not naturally earned. I am pretty sure that during a third world war there would be more important issues than a “Twilight-esque” romance.

‘Ass Backwards’

‘Best Man Down’

June Diane Raphael and Casey Wilson play best friends who embark on a cross country trip back to their hometown in an attempt to win a beauty pageant that eluded them as children. (NR - 90 minutes)

Justin Long and Jess Weixler play newlyweds that cancel their honeymoon and return to the snowy Midwest to make funeral arrangements for their best man (Tyler Labine), who died unexpectedly after their ceremony. (PG-13 - 91 minutes)

Joseph: June Diane Raphael and Casey Wilson’s characters in “Ass Backwards” are not only stupid; they are also disgusting. Moreover, the movie itself is not only unfunny; it is also annoying - not to mention incredibly insulting in its representation of women.

Joseph: “Best Man Down” is a tonal mess. The dramatic moments are so serious that you cannot feel comfortable laughing during the comedic ones and the comedic ones are so silly that you never quite feel emotionally connected to the characters during the dramatic ones.

COLUMNISTS

In “Last Love,” Michael Caine plays a widowed, world-weary professor living in Paris who sees no meaningful future for himself until he meets a free-spirited young dance instructor (Clémence Poésy), leading him to rediscover the joy that only family and true friendship can offer. Actress Gillian Anderson plays Caine’s character’s daughter. “I like complicated characters and I have a tendency to play characters who have more going on than what is on the surface or who have good sides and bad sides to them. That is much more interesting to play as an

actor and it is also more realistic in terms of human beings in general. “Human beings are much more complicated than we often give them credit for. So it doesn’t bother me that she might not do very likable things. She could potentially be a likable and a fun person but she sometimes makes some inappropriate choices and I find that interesting. “One of the things that I think it conveys is the importance of human connection. Not only does it exemplify how people of any age still have feelings, emotions and a desire

to live life to the fullest the best way they can - they are, at 70, 80 or 90, still human beings who deserve the best in life - but also that at any age human connection between two people is vital. “It is sometimes that which we are left with at the end of our lives that is the most meaningful. Whether it is a connection with our kids or if we don’t have that connection with our kids it could be a stranger on a bus or somebody in a supermarket who extends himself or herself in a generous, kind and compassionate way, we are left with that memory. I think it really speaks to the importance of human connection in this world and shows the impact that human connection can have on people’s lives.” - Gillian Anderson

Georgia native Trisha Yearwood still loves the comfort food of her childhood, so don’t expect her to dump the dumplings anytime soon. But fans can expect to see a new and sensible approach to food and diet as her Emmy-winning Saturday morning Food Network series, “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen,” enters its fourth season. The Grammy-winning country music superstar and New York Times best-selling cookbook author recently lost a substantial amount of weight, and Yearwood is looking forward to sharing some tips about that with her viewers.

Wednesday, November 13th at the Temple of Music and Art Pianist Fred Hersch, who is approaching legendary status in the jazz world for his imaginative prowess—from reinventing jazz standards to creating originals destined to be standards—is coming to Tucson for a very special concert sponsored by the Tucson Jazz Society and the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation. The concert will be held on Wednesday, November 13 at 7 p.m. at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott. The performance is part of a tour by the Western Jazz Presenters Network and funded through a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Hersch will be accompanied by his long-standing bassist and drummer, John Hébert and Eric McPherson. This will be Hersch’s third appearance in Tucson under the auspices of the Tucson Jazz Society.

Hersch is widely recognized for his ability to steadfastly create a unique body of original works while reinventing the standard jazz repertoire – investing time-tested classics with keen insight, fresh ideas and extraordinary technique. Whether unaccompanied, in duo, working with

trios and quintets, Hersch has explored the jazz tradition to its fullest even as he opens new and undiscovered doors. Hersch’s numerous accomplishments include a 2003 Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for composition, two Grammy® nominations for Best Jazz Instrumental

Performance and a Grammy® nomination for Best Instrumental Composition. He has appeared on over one hundred recordings, including more than two-dozen albums as bandleader/solo pianist. Hersch has acted as a passionate spokesman and fund-raiser for AIDS services and education agencies since 1993. He has produced and performed on four benefit recordings and at numerous concerts for the charities Classical Action: Performing Arts Against AIDS and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS that have raised over $250,000 to date. Made possible, in part, by a grant from the Western Jazz Presenters Network and the National Endowment for the Arts, presented in cooperation with the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation.
