REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE

DIDN T KNOW!

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

by Stan Robinson

‘Man of Tai Chi’

‘About Time’

‘Last Vegas’

Domhnall Gleeson plays a man who, at the age of 21, discovers that he can travel in time and change what happens and has happened in his own life. His decision to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend (Rachel McAdams) turns out not to be as easy as you might think. (R - 123 minutes)

Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline play old friends who decide to throw a Las Vegas bachelor party for the only one of them who has remained single. (PG-13 - 90 minutes)

Stan: Writer/director Richard Curtis uses humor laced with metaphoric lessons on the essence of living life as it comes to us while instilling the meaning of the old adage ‘God grant me the serenity’ to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference’ by Reinhold Niebuhr. Joseph: “About Time” encourages viewers to live each and every day appreciating life’s little victories and free from the rampant worries that will not change anything anyway. Writer/director Richard Curtis knows how to perfectly puppeteer our emotions.

Stan: The fun and friendships of these veteran actors brings to mind the long-time relationships that this reviewer has experienced over the years. And, at 67 years old and sharing the same age range of these actors, this delightful story is a reminder that there’s still more life to live, at any age. Joseph: “Last Vegas” will have older viewers slapping their knee replacements with boisterous laughter yet have younger audiences checking their smart watches every few minutes. Still, seeing these four legends have fun is worth the price of admission alone.

Follows the spiritual journey of a young martial artist (Tiger Chen) whose unparalleled Tai Chi skills land him in a highly lucrative underworld fight club. As the fights intensify, so does his will to survive. Keanu Reeves co-stars and directs. (R - 105 minutes) Stan: With the Chinese-martial arts genre among my foreign film favorites, this collaboration stemming from stunt man Tiger Chen’s friendship while training Keanu Reeves for the ‘Matrix’ films, features Tiger Chen in his first starring role, Keanu Reeves directorial debut, and philosophical insight on Tai Chi.

In ‘National Treasure’ (2004), the good guys in the movie use Google and the bad guys use Yahoo!

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

Joseph: “Man of Tai Chi” is cold, distant, flat, monotonous and depressingly drab - just like most Keanu Reeves’ performances nowadays. It exhibits some spectacular martial arts skills but they are presented in a way that lacks any personality whatsoever. Django Unchained’ (2012) is the first time in 16 years that Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t get top billing.

Top Movies “End of Watch” (2012): Gyllenhaal remakes his screen

image impressively as an intense L.A. cop who runs afoul of an overthe-border cartel.

MOVIE TWEETS!

“Brothers” (2009): Gyllenhaal is strong as a missing

soldier’s (Tobey Maguire) sibling who becomes involved with his sisterin-law (Natalie Portman) during the other man’s absence.

“Brokeback Mountain” (2005): In what has to be deemed his milestone role to date, Gyllenhaal plays one cowboy very deeply involved with another (Heath Ledger).

FILM! SECTION

Jake Gyllenhaal’s

“The Day After Tomorrow” (2004): The visual

effects are the real stars here, but Gyllenhaal is a stalwart young hero on the run from effects of global warming in a frozen-over New York.

“The Magnificent Ambersons”

By JAy BoBBin

Still haven’t seen that movie that your friends have been talking about? Film Columnist Randy Montgomery recaps what you may have missed in 140 characters or less.

“The Magnificent Ambersons” (1942) The RKO studio ultimately took this film away from Welles, which explains its brevity (less than 90 minutes), but the adaptation of Booth Tarkington’s novel – about a family trying to change with the times – has much to recommend it, including its cast of Mercury Theatre players. “Macbeth” (1948) Welles tried a number of unique filmmaking techniques – mostly necessitated by a small budget – in his film version of the Shakespeare classic (with Welles in the title role). “The Third Man” (1949) As the mysterious, supposedly deceased Harry Lime, Welles is part of one of the all-time-great mystery movies ... primarily as an actor, though he did make contributions to the script.

Ron HowaRd’s Top Movies “Frost/Nixon” (2008): A sure sign of Howard’s yen for varied, smart subject matter as a director was his version of the stage play about David Frost’s (Michael Sheen) interviews with disgraced ex-president Richard Nixon (Frank Langella). “A Beautiful Mind” (2001): The story of troubled mathematician John Nash (Russell Crowe) earned Oscars for director Howard, co-star Jennifer Connelly and the entire picture. “Cocoon” (1985): A troupe of veteran actors adds heart to sci-fi for director Howard in playing senior citizens given a fountain of youth by aliens.

‘Bad Grandpa’ - Hilarious from start to finish with too many outrageous moments to mention. Wear waterproof undergarments. Grade: A

‘Carrie’ - While nothing can compare to the campy 70’s classic, this remake manages to come fairly close. A perfect way to celebrate Halloween. Grade: B-

‘Escape Plan’ - They were bad a*s in the 80’s, but should Stallone & Schwarzenegger really still be acting? Action packed, but can easily be missed. Grade: C

‘Gravity’ - Stunning cinematography adds to a tense plot and award-worthy performances by Bullock and Clooney. Hold on for a wild ride. Grade: A

‘Prisoners’ - Strong performances are tested by a so-so script that challenges the viewer, not only because of subject, but poor writing. Grade: C+

‘The Counselor’ - A star-studded cast under such expert direction should have produced a much better film. An action thriller worth skipping. Grade: C-

HALLOWEEN 35th ANNIVERSARY SCREENING October 30th Part of the Loft Cinema’s “Master of Horror: The Films of John Carpenter” series. Carpenter’s low-budget “babysitter in peril” fright flick terrified the world and became not only a landmark in modern horror, but also one of the most phenomenally successful independent films ever made, setting the standard for the onslaught of oversexed-teens-meet-maniac killer movies to come. Jamie Lee Curtis (in her first major role) shot to Scream Queen stardom as the innocent but resilient Laurie, a high school girl made all too aware on one memorable Halloween night that evil stalks the shady streets and living rooms of her small Illinois town in the form of escaped psychopath Michael Myers, a hulking monster in a white mask who may indeed be “The Boogeyman.” (Dir. by John Carpenter, 1978, USA, 91 mins., Rated R) Digital Event Location: 3233 E. FRANKENSTEIN PRESENTED BY NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE October 31st The Loft Cinema presents the National Theatre Live’s smash-hit broadcast of Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller in alternating roles as The Doctor and The Creature, returns to cinemas as part of the National Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebration! This stunning adaptation of Mary Shelly’s classic horror tale Frankenstein enjoyed a sell-out run at the National Theatre in 2011, and went on to win awards including the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller. Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal in this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale. Alison Sweeney credits kids with improving her cooking Becoming a mom made Alison Sweeney a healthy cook. Her son, 8, and daughter, 4, were the catalysts for healthier eating, and the host of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” airing Tuesdays, saw her cooking evolve. “It started as nonexistent,” she says. “I famously, among my friends, had been known to explode a bag of popcorn in a microwave. I was so unqualified to be in my own kitchen. And when I was young and unmarried and not a parent, I was obsessed with the Food Network. Emeril Lagasse taught me how to cook. I became unafraid of cooking, watching him.” Though she was cooking, it wasn’t healthy. “I started cooking healthier, making him baby food when he was an infant,” she says of her firstborn. “Since then I have been a much healthier cook,” she says. “I am pretty adventurous with different spices. I can wing it. It is not always a win.”

Take a Stroll with Niccole: Rillito River Walk Path

The Rillito, the Spanish word for little river, probably should have been named Rillito Seco as it is dry most of the year. Once in a while, it will fill up during monsoons for a short period of time, but the dry sand swallows all the moisture up quickly as the summer sun’s heat radiates across the desert. This trail is an awesome way to commute east and west across town and escape the traffic of the city streets on a bike. This route also has parallel dirt paths for mountain bikers, runners and walkers (or sand down under for horseback riding). It also includes a smooth-paved run between Dodge Blvd. and The River Road exit that is a rollerblader’s dream. The Rillito River Path is 12 miles from end to end or a 24 mile round trip, which runs from Craycroft road all the way to east 1-10. It cuts under bridges to dodge traffic which makes for some really fun inclines and descents along the way. There are a few points where you have to cross traffic but only in bike friendly communities and you can slice this

run into any mileage you like. There is a myriad of wildlife out here; birds, bats, hawks, bunnies and reptiles of all kinds. This path passes water fountains, bathrooms, rest areas, parks, a raceway and the Tucson Racquet Club, which has a pretty good restaurant that is open to the public. I live near the river so I am lucky enough to be able use it to commute to work on the east side. It is a fun and easy ride. I prefer to go for the sunrise or sunset hours but any time of day is good for this path, especially during the Fall and Winter months. There is not much shade but there are gorgeous mountain and desert views for photography buffs. Take a lot of water and lights in case you don’t feel like leaving the path at sunset.
