In less than two weeks, nearly 10,000 bike enthusiasts will take over Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), Mexico for the 13th Annual Rocky Point Rally, November 7-10! The Rally is known as the largest motorcycle event South of the border, gathering riders from the United States, Mexico and beyond. Rocky Point hosts a variety of festivals and is home to many vacationers, but the Rocky Point Rally is known as the trip of the year! Friends get together for a weekend of spectacular sunsets, great weather and beachside activities

including a parade, music and fun on the malecÓn! The weekend is filled with riding events, black jack tournaments, live entertainment, boxing matches and a fiesta every night to welcome new and returning riders to the community.

Peñasco Convention and Visitors Bureau, said. “The Rally has become an event that locals and visitors look forward to each year. Not only does it give our local businesses the opportunity to grow, but creates lifelong memories about Rocky Point.”

“The fantastic weather, sandy beaches and crisp blue sea sets the stage for an ideal vacation, but The Rocky Point Rally takes it to the next level as a sea of motorcycles cruise down for a weekend of biker freedom,” Héctor Vázquez del Mercado, President of the Puerto

The Rally is more than a weekend of fun and entertainment. Each year, it positively impacts the community by supporting businesses, introducing the beautiful Rocky Point to new visitors and raising donations for several charitable organizations. Not everyone in the group enjoys bikes? No problem! Rocky Point has undergone tremendous growth and safety measures to make sure there are activities for everyone! Step away from the revving engines and leather jackets during your stay to experience the world-class lifestyle all of Rocky Point offers. Friends can tee off from a championship, seaside course like The Links at Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort, take an excursion deep-sea

fishing or sit back and enjoy the Rally from the sidelines at a local restaurant and bar. “Tourism in Rocky Point has immensely grown over the last few years, but we make sure we maintain its spirit of tradition and authenticity. Our beautiful city offers a wide variety of resorts, sea and land activities and ecotourism for everyone, “Vázquez del Mercado said. “We want our visitors to experience the beauty of Rocky Point and fall in love with the land as much as our community does.”

CITY! COVER STORY

SLEEP HAS NEVER BEEN SO FUNNY has always been adamant about not embarrassing his volunteers. He prefers his audiences to laugh with the volunteers, not at them. Flip takes great care in making sure that the stars of his show remember everything, and have as much fun as his audience. His volunteers often get an added bonus as they awaken to suggestions that have a lasting beneficial effect.

This show is improvisation in its truest form. The volunteers are the stars of the show making every night different. It’s not uncommon to see excited fans return two or three times on the same weekend bringing with them their family and friends that will surely become future fans.

Stand Up Live is located at 50 W. Jefferson St. Phoenix, AZ 85003 In Cityscape Mall

Since Orley burst onto the comedy scene he has single-handedly reshaped the image of hypnosis from its vaudeville stigma and made it hip and edgy enough for the Millennials. Flip’s show consistently makes believers out of the most skeptical audience members while they wipe the tears of laughter from their eyes. Across the county volunteers storm Orley’s stage, hoping to be among the lucky ones to grab a seat and become the rock star of the evening. Flip’s quirky sense of humor and quick wit is always at the forefront of his shows. It is apparent in the solid 25 minutes of laugh out loud standup before every show, to the way he taps into his volunteers creative imaginations as he leads them through hilarious scenarios and giving them a fun experience to remember. What’s five centuries among friends? Especially when we’re talking terrific fashion. In The CW’s “Reign,” the young Mary Stuart (Adelaide Kane) arrives in France for an arranged marriage to Prince Francis (Toby Regbo). Their wardrobes befit young royalty, but rather than the strictures of 16thcentury court wear, with stiff frills and angular silhouettes, the costumes are an artistic blend of modern and period. When costume designer Meredith Markworth-Pollack began working on the show, the idea was to create, “something slightly different to the costume dramas we had seen so far, especially because of the demographic of The CW, and bring in the element of contemporary fashion.” There are a few edicts, though. No petticoats, no tights for men and no hip rolls for women. Fashionable in the Elizabethan era, hip rolls were essentially cushions worn at the hips to make the waist look smaller. Celina Sinden

The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley plays November 7th and 11th Elvis Presley’s passion for gospel music will come alive when How Great Thou Art – The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley starring Robert Shaw and The Lonely Street Band opens at The Palms Theatre Thursday, November 7th with a second performance on Monday November 11, 2013. From the earliest days of his boyhood until his untimely death, gospel music always held a special place in the heart of Elvis Presley. Before he became the most famous entertainer the world has ever known, as a young man Elvis wanted nothing more than to sing bass in a gospel group. Starring Robert Shaw and a 12-piece band with a gospel quartet performing such hits as “Peace In The Valley,” “Amazing Grace” and of course the title track “How Great Thou Art,” you’re sure to find inspiration and lots of great memories in this wonderful music.

Presley never won a Grammy for any of his pop or rock ‘n’ roll hits, both categories that he was more identified with, said Shaw. But, out of 14 Grammy nominations, he won three for gospel recordings - the albums “How Great Thou Art,” and “He Touched Me,” and his live Memphis concert recording of “How Great Thou Art.”

WOMEN WHO ROCK: VISION, PASSION, POWER MIM Brings “Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power” to the Southwest with Star-Studded Exhibition Highlighting Nearly a Century of Female Musicians The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix is now exhibiting “Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power,” created by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. This groundbreaking and provocative exhibition highlights the flashpoints, the firsts, the best, the celebrated and sometimes lesser-known women who moved popular music and American culture forward. The exhibition will be housed in MIM’s Target Gallery through April 20, 2014, and admission is $7 when purchased with general museum admission or $10 for the exhibition only. “Women Who Rock” is sponsored locally by Bank of America, APS, azcentral.com and Storage Solutions.

The exhibition spotlights more than 70 artists and features instruments, original handwritten lyrics, stage outfits, concert posters and videos from artists including Billie Holiday, Maybelle Carter, Aretha Franklin, Janis

Joplin, Patti Smith, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and more! The exhibition weaves a powerful and engaging narrative that demonstrates how women have been engines of creation and change in popular music, from the early years of the 20th century to the present. Notable artifacts include Lady Gaga’s meat dress, Wanda Jackson’s

acoustic guitar, Joan Jett’s leather jacket, Bessie Smith’s “Oh Daddy Blues” sheet music and many more. Guests can also unleash their inner rock star with items for sale at the Museum Store that are inspired by the women who made music history. Girly meets glam with artist t-shirts, heavy metal jewelry, glittery purses, stunner shades and chic home décor. Celebrate the decades of women who rocked into our hearts and stereos with MIM’s vast collection of music and nostalgic treasures. These items will be available for purchase throughout the duration of the exhibition. The Musical Instrument Museum is located at 4725 E. Mayo Boulevard in Phoenix (corner of Tatum and Mayo Boulevards, just south of Loop 101). For general museum information and a full schedule of events, visit MIM.org or call 480.478.6000.

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

Stan: As a person of color and aware of the practice of abduction to be sold into slavery from history, and an emotional roller coaster to view, “12 Years a Slave” strikingly presents a time portal look at life in the 1800s. The exceptional performances of the cast, and director Steve McQueen’s intuitive insight, leave feelings of triumph on how far we’ve come as a society.

‘Blue is the Warmest Color’ Adèle Exarchopoulos plays a young girl who begins a romance with a male classmate but is soon swept off her feet by a mysterious, blue-haired girl - a confident older art student (Léa Seydoux). (NC-17 187 minutes) Joseph: “Blue is the Warmest Color” is every bit as beautifully poetic. Director Abdellatif Kechiche exposes emotions you never imagined could be manifested in a motion picture. Having said that, its 3-hour length and graphic nature is not for everybody.

Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a New York State citizen who, in the 1800s, is kidnapped and made to work on a plantation in New Orleans in the 1800s. Other stars include Michael

‘Last Love’

Joseph: “12 Years a Slave” is an extremely excruciating ordeal to endure but essential viewing for its powerful performances and psychologically commanding depiction of one man’s seemingly inconceivable ability to survive through such suffering.

Michael Caine plays a widowed, world-weary professor living in Paris who sees no meaningful future for himself until he meets a free-spirited young dance instructor (Clémence Poésy), leading him to rediscover the joy that only family and true friendship can offer. (NR - 115 minutes) Joseph: With “Last Love,” you get two movies in one. One is filled with heartfelt emotion and complicated themes of love, loss, letting go and living through it. The other is about the trivial problems of people who, as it turns out, are not all that likeable after all.

COLUMNISTS

Voice Actor John Kassir (‘Tales from the Crypt’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“I think one of the big differences in the popularity of this particular show over all those other horror anthologies was the connection to the comic book and the ‘tongue through the cheek’ approach that

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With more than 22 years of experience in media production, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. E-mail him at Movies@StanRobinson.org.

the Cryptkeeper had. So we will see. But what we did is a tough thing to do. My perfect scenario would have been to get Robert Rodriguez and [Quentin] Tarantino to launch a couple of new episodes like they did with Bob Zemeckis, Walter Hill and Richard Donner in the original series and then launch it from there.” - John Kassir

‘Behind-the-Scenes’ - ‘All Is Lost’ By Stan Robinson In the film, Robert Redford plays a resourceful sailor deep into a solo voyageon the Indian Ocean. Retiring on board for the night, he wakes to find that his 39-foot yacht is taking on water after a collision with a shipping container at sea, and with his navigation equipment and radio

disabled, he sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. He finds himself - despite all efforts to the contrary - staring his mortality in the face. When a movie with only one actor, minimal dialogue, and the sea as a backdrop, can sustain interest and

at the same time elicit such deep emotional feelings within us on our own mortality, it’s a testament to the acting ability of that actor. ‘All Is Lost’ easily makes one of my best films of 2013. Congratulations to Robert Redford for an exceptional performance. (PG-13 - 100 minutes)

RANDY MONTGOMERY

“Well, there is always room for me on the ‘big scream’ boys and ghouls. [Laughs] But I’m just not sure. It was a very expensive show to do in its day. That level of quality is a difficult thing to do. I think that the Gaines family has the rights back [to ‘Tales from the Crypt’] and they are looking to do something different with it some other kind of non-anthology style show that that would be more of a serial-type show like ‘American Horror Story.’

“Characters from the comic books would have an ongoing profile each week. Hopefully they will do something really cool with it. It’s a great property and I would hate to see it not be something really good. Of course, [Joel Silver, Bob Zemeckis, Walter Hill and Richard Donner] have the rights to the Cryptkeeper and he will certainly always be around in some form. We don’t know whether he’ll ever be attached to another ‘Tales from the Crypt’ - but probably not with this other thing that the Gaines family is doing.

Randy Montgomery’s reactions reveal the emotional intuition of an average moviegoer. With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. 4 Peaks Grill & Tap

Zinc Brasserie

Scottsdale is known for posh eateries and eclectic pockets of culinary snobbery where the lowly hamburger occupies low-rent menu positioning. Where to order one is to identify yourself as a knuckle-dragging dining cretin, unevolved and unable to crawl from the slime pool. Not worthy to dine with fine linens and reduction sauce. Rehab Burger Therapy is NOT one of those places.

Here the burger is worshipped by staff and patrons alike. The restaurant is fun because everyone in it is fun. If you like a beach theme, flirty, fun wait staff and a menu filled with comfort-givin’, sauce-drippin’, burger-grillin’, beer-chillin’, chili-swillin’ items, well…welcome home! Your therapist will see you now. The food is seriously good, but the restaurant doesn’t take itself too seriously (Hey, they serve chili with Fritos here…And yes, you want some). Actually, they put chili on a lot of things here because the chili is damn good. Some items you should try, include the Pig Wings, which is pork on a stick with

a spicy peach BBQ sauce. Never had that before. It was good! The burgers are big. Really big. You can get brioche, pretzel, wheat or even gluten-free buns. And for those who do not fully embrace the burger, you can opt for turkey burgers or chicken with all the same fixins. In the spirit of healing, the Hangover Burger offers up a morning-after antidote that includes a fried egg, bacon, Colby Jack cheese and a Hatch green

chili. If you believe a burger isn’t right until it has the capacity to drip all over your Duck Dynasty T-shirt, then get the Porkster Burger, which is a burger… covered in BBQ sauce and pulled pork - dripping with cheddar cheese. A house specialty and source of pride is all the Rehab sauces you get to choose from. Just ask and they will bring you a bunch to try and the staff can easily recommend which sauces to pair up with. Try the Pineapple Teriyaki, Aioli, Chipotle Aioli, Pesto Aioli, Spicy Ketchup, Chipotle Ranch, Yellow Mustard, Spicy Wholegrain Mustard and Original Marinara.

And now the best part: Pot Brownies and ice cream! After munching on all the spicy goodness that your rehabilitation has in store, try these to make the rest of your taste buds dance in delight. Peanut butter or chocolate brownies, marshmallow filling sandwiched inside and served hot… in a pot. Ice cream for only 99 cents more? Has anyone ever said no to this? Bring it on! The milkshakes are killer too and highly recommended. Try the Orange Creamsicle or Tahitian Vanilla.

Rehab Burger Therapy: Good for What Ales Ya’

If you’ve been feeling a bit tired and depressed over your typical restaurant choices, ask your doctor if Rehab Burger Therapy is right for you. If he is unfamiliar with it, ask one of the Rehab bartenders instead. They know more and have a full bar, served cheerfully, without a prescription right over the counter! Wanna go? Visit Rehab Burger Therapy at 7210 E. 2nd Street ( just East of Scottsdale Road, in Old Town) Scottsdale, 85251. (480) 621-5358

AS GOOD AS GOLF GETS It is one of the few Arizona golf courses that has all the water it needs. The greens are well maintained … oh, and they’re fast, I might add. The elevation of Legacy offers excellent views of the downtown Phoenix skyline, Camelback Mountain, Squaw Peak and, of course, South Mountain. Thanks to a mesquite and eucalyptus-lined cart path with the occasional Mexican Fan Palm and Palo Verde tree, there is ample relief from the relentless Arizona sun and a dramatic desert landscape.

The Legacy Golf Club in Phoenix is more than a round of golf; it’s an experience

It’s understandable why Legacy Golf Club was named one of the “Top 10 Golf Courses to Play in Phoenix” by Golf Digest and rated the top public course by ESPN.com. It’s a beautiful setting, it tests you as a golfer, you’re surrounded by history, you feel the legacy and its charm beckons you back for more. And, it’s reasonably priced. Legacy offers what it calls “Happy Hour,” Monday through Thursday from 10am to 2pm. You can play for a buck a hole—that’s right, $18 for a round of golf.

By Teresa Gardner Aptly named, The Legacy Golf Club leaves a lasting impression of local history coupled with an engaging golf experience. Set against the backdrop of scenic South Mountain, the course draws you in with its charm, lulling you into a state of serenity with its lovely rolling hills adorned with century-old wagons, rusty wheels and antique farm implements. But don’t be fooled by her charm … The Legacy Golf Club is challenging. Every tee box is surrounded by desert—except the two holes where you have to carry water off the tee—and good luck navigating Legacy’s deep bunkers. They’re everywhere … or better said, strategically placed.

Center provides private lessons, 3-D evaluations, professional club fitting, course management analysis, short game and putting lessons, golf fitness programs, simulator lessons and rental and group seminars. Strozeweski says the center is so much more than an instructional facility for improving your golf game. There’s a 2,200 sq. foot meeting space inside the center for hosting events, conferences, banquets or birthday parties. A popular activity is renting the simulator room. Let the legacy linger by finishing your round with a stop at The Grille for a delicious and healthy salad, sandwich, burger or wrap. The Legacy Golf Club is part of the Legacy Resort, which features more than 300 condominium suites, tennis courts, pools, fitness center and spa. The Legacy Resort can accommodate special events and retreats and is located ten minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.

The Legacy Golf Club is a sprawling 18-hole, par-71 championship course on what was once a 7,500-acre ranch owned by Arizona entrepreneur Dwight B. Heard. Great pains were taken by course architect Gary Panks in 1999 to integrate the indigenous vegetation and continue the Heard legacy by preserving many of the historical structures on the property. The original two-grain silos, built in 1902 and at the time existed as the tallest structures in Maricopa County, still stand as sentinels over the 18th fairway. Stories abound of President Teddy Roosevelt and Pancho Villa visiting the old bunkhouse just off the first tee. It’s now beautifully restored as the Sierra Vista House.

Another Good Reason to Visit The Legacy Golf Club In March, Legacy opened its Golf Performance Center run by the Raspberry Golf Academy. The 7,500 sq. foot facility is home to golf’s highest precision technology and latest instructional techniques. Legacy Golf Club General Manager, Rich Strozewski, says the facility’s offerings are truly revolutionary. Equipped with five air-cooled indoor hitting bays, a full simulator room featuring the E6 TruGolf HD simulator, a TrackMan Pro, a K-Vest, SAM PuttLab and FlightScope, the performance center is attracting golfers and instructors from all over the world to rent its bays and use the facilities.

With four sets of tee boxes, there is something for every skill level at Legacy Golf Club, ranging from 5,471 yards from the women’s tees to the copper tees at 6,946 yards. The grass is always green at Legacy, thanks to unlimited water rights grandfathered in decades ago prior to water regulation.

included with the growing Trophy Kart classes, creating the solid foundation and driving skill needed in a future professional setting. Tim also expanded his off-road racing vision into desert racing. By January 2012, Arizona Desert Racing Association (ADRA) was formed. This series also features shorter than average tracks, spanning approximately 20-25 miles, in which the contestant will race through Arizona’s desert allowing spectators the thrill of viewing action packed racing. The typical racing mileage for ADRA events is 100-150 miles.

Racing is not only a sport, but has proven its role as a family pastime. Besides the popularity in the spectator realm, racing is a community function and more importantly, has been kept alive right here in the valley. Touring throughout Arizona, the Lucas Oil Regional Series, Arizona is coming up on its season finale double header, November 8th, 9th and 10th at the Wild Horse Pass Motor Sports Park (formally known as Firebird International Raceway) in Chandler. Gates open at 6:30am; entry fee just $15. The Lucas Oil Regional Series, Arizona is a short course racing series, similar to the famous Baja style off road racing, however, a lot more spectator friendly. The courses are approximately 1 mile in length, fenced off, allowing for plenty of spectator viewing and full of all the excitement a typical desert race brings, without all the waiting. Instead, there is constant and sometimes extreme battling amongst competitors to the finish.

Tim’s journey into a life of racing began when he was just 3 months old. He attended his first race at Riverside Raceway in which his grandfather, Don Barlow, won the 1976 World Championships in his Class 4 off-road 4x4 vehicle named ‘Crazy Horse’. Tim rarely missed a race for the duration of his grandfather’s career. In addition, he occasionally became co-driver at the launch of his uncle Steve Barlow’s off road racing career. Tim continued his family’s legacy and started racing dwarf cars himself in which he quickly became a multi-time Champion. He then began his desert racing career in 2005 and within a year he won his first championship.

Tim Jones is the founder of Arizona Short Course Championship (ASCC) Lucas Oil Regional Series, Arizona. However, this series was without doubt created through multiple talents within his own family and friends, all which shared in Tim’s vision and passion for off road racing. His mother, Lori Barlow was a large role in the creation of ASCC in 2010 and remains an essential part of the business, working at and attending every event.

Tim’s dream was to become a professional off-road racer, however, while working full time and raising a family, he himself realized a void. There wasn’t an introduction route for an amateur racer desiring a future professional racing career. The result Photos By DGP Photography

was the successful development of a local short-course off-road racing series, ASCC. ASCC quickly turned Tim’s vision and dream into a reality as his new off-road racing series quickly gained recognition in the off-road community. Shortly after ASCC’s 2nd race, Tim was approached by Lucas Oil o. and was asked to become the first Regional Series to operate under the Lucas Oil national series banner. ASCC is now known as the Lucas Oil Regional offroad Series, Arizona. Lucas Oil Regional off-road Series, Arizona is an entry level racing series showcasing all levels of racers from sportsman to professional. There are several different classes including Full & Mini Stock Trucks, UTV’s, Buggies, and Trophy Karts for the younger racers starting at age 8. Professional racers from the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series also compete at these events as they prepare for upcoming national races. Currently, Tim’s grandfather Don Barlow and Tim’s brother, Aaron Jones, worked together to build and finally compete in what is considered a Full Stock truck. The Full Stock Truck class was created with the concept that more people would be able to meet the expense of racing, and has been quite popular. There is also a Stock Polaris RZR class in which you can purchase a Polaris RZR off the showroom floor, bolt on a cage add minor safety features and compete in the races. The younger racers are also

“There is a lot of local support to get Arizona desert racing where it used to be in its prime,” Tim states. His goal is to have tracks within a day travel no matter where you live in Arizona. Both ADRA and Lucas Oil Regional off-road Series, Arizona are dedicated to producing quality yet affordable, safe, exciting, and family oriented race events. All events are managed and run by Tim’s immediate family and friends. His wife and children, mother, aunts and cousins, as well as his many friends that have worked with true devotion from the start are active in ensuring that racers and race enthusiasts enjoy the entire experience each time they come out into the Arizona landscape for an event. These grass-roots events are a true testament of the racing lifestyle. There are veteran racers always in attendance which ensures that the racing traditions of skill and sportsmanship are passed on from generation to generation. Tim is planning to launch yet another race related venture next year that is sure to provide additional entertainment for the local race fan. A CLOSER LOOK ORIGINALLY THE ARIZONA SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (ASCC) until Lucas Oil adopted it, the ASCC is one of only three regional shortcourse off-road racing series in the country. It was the first off-road truck series with a sole focus on short-course racing. Since its merger with Lucas Oil, the California and Utah series have been born based on the format originated by the ASCC. For those not familiar with off-road racing or the ASCC, series director and president Tim Jones explained it best: “Short course is the cousin to the Baja truck, longer course stuff, which is in the desert. We are that ... in a stadium.” There are several distinct divisions in the ASCC. Open to children as young as 8, there are the trophy karts followed by UTVs (Utility Vehicle) that include the SR1 division (Modified Rhinos) that former AZSAL cover girl Corry Weller competes in. There are also three buggy divisions, mini and full stock truck divisions, and a pro division for all the big names in the sport. “Anything that can run on the desert, we’ll run them on the short course,” Jones said. “It’s very affordable to do and that’s our main goal, keep it affordable and a family environment.” Most event admissions are under $15 and a majority of the entry fees, depending on class, are under $200. Right now Lucas Oil is working on starting a Northern Nevada series with the end goal being, as Jones said, “Basically every region or state will have a series like the one started in Arizona.”

discipline is the ability to continue on, to not give up in the face of adversity, to push against or to simply endure. Yes, it requires effort on your part to do WHAT you should do, WHEN you should do it…WHETHER you like it or not. Pay close attention to the “like it or not” part. When I hear people say … “But, I don’t want to!” I want to say… “Please…grow up!”

MACK NEWTON ON… The Art of Discipline Many of the problems I’ve faced in my life, I actually created for myself. Sometimes it makes us feel a little better in the short term to blame other people or circumstances for our problems, but usually you don’t have to look any further than a mirror to find the true root of all your problems. For me, it was simply not doing what I was supposed to do, when I was supposed to do it. I was a master at putting things off and as a result I was mired in underachievement. I used to think that if I simply did nothing or waited long enough, the problem would go away on its own. It never did. Today, I am surprised to find how many people…like I did…continue to lack an understanding of the Art of Discipline.

I define discipline as doing WHAT you should do, WHEN you should do it… WHETHER you like it or not. That sounds simple, doesn’t it? Yes, it is simple, but very likely developing personal discipline is one of the most difficult things you’ll ever attempt in your lifetime. As a professional teacher for over 45 years, I’ve noticed a weakness among people I’ve taught…a basic unwillingness to cope with unpleasantness or any other kind of difficulty. It seemed that whenever confronted with unpleasantness or challenges they wanted to turn away, avoid the situation or even run away…or, as I had done earlier in my life, just hope it disappears. It never does. In this sense,

Sometimes I’ve heard people say that not having discipline is freedom in their thinking. You know…simply doing whatever it is they want to do. This is what they think freedom is…freedom to be. Actually, it isn’t freedom at all, but bondage. Worse than that, a lack of personal discipline is slavery! Yes, Slavery! I realize the negative power and connotation of this word and I intend to use in this example. When I cannot or will not say “no”, or I always pursue the avenue of least resistance, or I seek the promise and fulfillment of immediate gratification, I allow myself to be handcuffed, tied down, shackled and bound by any desire, any impulse, any yearning that comes my way and that is not only slavery… it’s selfimposed slavery. The results are simple and immediate…lost potential, stress, isolation and most importantly, lost self-respect. In addition to all that, I must add that in most cases these people are living a life of extended mediocrity rather than fulfilling their life’s possibilities. One thing is for sure, once you begin to practice the art of discipline, your life will change and it will change immediately. It will be noticed by all those around you…everyone whose life touches yours. Why? Simply because not many truly understand the art of discipline and it’s not practiced by many. It will set you up as an example to follow and a role model. Sounds like a good deal to me. -Mack Newton Mack Newton is an 8th Degree Black Belt, Senior Master Instructor, Global Tae KwonDo Federation International and Chairman of the World Technical Committee

INTERNATIONAL STOUT DAY Previously, I let you know my feelings on made up beer holidays when we “celebrated” National IPA Day. In case you missed the article, I am against them. They reek of self-promotion and remind me of the Hallmark Holidays created to sell greeting cards. Regardless, it appears as if beer holidays are here to stay, so we might as well make the best of it. Which is exactly what we intend to do on November 8th when it is time to celebrate International Stout Day. That’s right; it is a tribute to stouts, and not just for the United States, but for the whole world… which kind of makes sense. While Americans can make legitimate claim to wrestling the IPA style away from the rest of the world, to the point where other countries now copy our version of

IPA, stouts remain an iconic world-wide style. So how about we dig into the style a little bit and then figure out where we can enjoy some of these magnificent beers on November 8th. Stout beer was not its own style when the name first developed in the 1700’s. Rather, it was used to imply an increased strength in a beer, much like the term Imperial or Double is now used. They were more of a category of strong beers, typically dark, including some Porters. Porters had become a favorite of the working class in London, both because they were relatively inexpensive and because they were stronger than most of the other beers available. Porter was unique because it was one of the first beers that was aged at the brewery and

shipped ready to serve. Prior to that, most London publicans would receive the beer young and age it themselves. Eventually the envelope was pushed on this style and ABVs went up to 6.6% (not a big beer by today’s standards but a monster by 18th century standards). These beers were known as Stout Porters. The style spread throughout the British Isles and in Ireland the Stout Porter became increasingly popular as opposed to the Plain Porter, typically just called a Plain. An Irish brewery named Guinness even produced a beer they titled Extra Superior Porter which was huge with the Dublin crowd. As beer styles eventually settled out, the fine folks at Guinness changed the name to Guinness Extra CONTINUED ON 46...

...CONTINUED FROM 44 Stout. And that’s the rest of the story… wait this isn’t NPR? Okay we will press forward. Eventually, Porters spread and what had started out as Stout Porter caught on big in the area around the Baltic Sea. These beers became known as Baltic Porters instead of Stout Porter and every Baltic Nation still produces at least one of these beers. Stouts meanwhile, took on their own persona, which typically featured more roasted malts and a different strain of yeast from the porters of the day. There are many types of stouts including Dry or Irish Stout, Imperial Stout (which would have been called a Stout Stout Porter?), Coffee Stout, Oyster Stout (which may or may not include oysters, but signifies how incredibly well stouts and oysters pair together) and the Sweet Stouts (Milk, Oatmeal and Chocolate). Milk Stouts in particular are interesting creatures as they were originally brewed in Great Britain right after World War II as a nourishing drink. The addition of lactose, or milk sugar provided needed calories in a country whose food production capabilities had been hit hard by the German Blitzkrieg. Oatmeal stouts likewise have some interesting history. At one point they contained 30-35% oats but that declined and interest in this style had died and no examples were in production when Michael Jackson wrote his 1977 book, “The World Guide to Beer.” The section on oatmeal stouts

intrigued Charles Finkel, who had an import company called Merchant du Vin. Finkel commissioned Samuel Smith Brewery to make an oatmeal stout, and it has become one of their biggest selling beers. Charles Finkel and his wife Rose went on to open Pike Brewing in Seattle’s Pike Place Market which they still own today. Enough of the history lesson. If anything is to come of these “holidays” it should be a further appreciation of the style. You will have a lot of choices for Stout Day. You can always hit your local package store and bring home a nice assortment of stouts to sample. You could have a stout party and have everyone bring their favorite stout to sip and share. Or…you could hit up one of the many places that will be featuring stouts on tap and in bottle for the day. There are too many of them to list here, so I suggest you check the web sites and Facebook pages of your favorite watering holes to see what is going on and how to take advantage of it. As for me, I don’t need a special day to enjoy a stout. I think I will have one right now.

By “King” James Swann Hello again beer lovers, Halloween is upon us, the temperature is finally breaking and it’s time to chat about Pumpkin Beers. At last count, there were at least 20 different brews out there to choose from and the list seems to be growing.

BEER! SECTION

The Pumpkin Beers Are Here!

Here are a few of my favorites from this year’s crop that are worth seeking out. 1.

Wasatch Pumpkin Ale. One of the best out there and an experience almost akin to drinking a pumpkin pie! I have even seen people go as far as putting whipped cream on top of a pint of it. True Story.

2. Grand Canyon Pumpkin Springs Porter. My favorite of the year and one tasty brew. Unlike the Wasatch brew this is a porter style with a deep, rich dark colour and flavour to match. Brewed with various kinds of squash, including pumpkin this spicy winter brew is one you don’t want to miss! 3. Boston Brewing Fat Jack. Brewed in Boston, this brewery started the craze for beers of this type with Sam Adams Octoberfest more than a decade ago. Fat Jack takes it up a notch with hints of ginger snaps, winter spices and a bit more alcohol. No complaints right? 4.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

Rogue Brewing Pumpkin Patch Ale. Here is a real winner from Oregon brewed with copious amounts of Nutmeg and roasted pumpkin. Find this one if you can cause it’s delish!

5. Jolly Pumpkin Brewing La Parcela Sour Ale. Yes you heard that right, a sour pumpkin ale and one you don’t want to miss. Notes of squash and spice blanketed in a tangy, citrusy brew with a high amount of acidity and a clean dry finish. Definitely different. How’s that for a short list? Now get out here and grab a pint before it’s gone! CHEERS!

GET CRAFTY 2013 Get Crafty with more than 60 different Lagers, Ales, Porters and Stouts while Celebrating the Life of Event Founder, Greg “Fretzy” Fretz

The brewers are coming to Heritage Square on Saturday, December 7th and they’re bringing more than 60 different lagers, ales, porters and stouts for the second annual Phoenix Brewers Invitational – Get Crafty 2013. The Phoenix Brewers Invitational was the brain child of the late Greg “Fretzy” Fretz. His vision was to create a signature craft beer event in downtown Phoenix that celebrates the vast array of styles and flavors of craft beer. In May, 2013, Fretzy lost his battle with throat cancer. His passing struck the Phoenix beer community as it seemed just about everyone had shared a special fondness for his generous and outgoing personality. With the support of his wife, Stacey Fretz, the Phoenix Brewers Invitational will feature a special tribute to Fretzy. “Greg was very passionate about starting an annual festival with local breweries. I want to make sure his passion for beer and vision for the festival continues,” said Stacie Fretz. Benefiting the Children in Need Foundation, the Phoenix Brewers Invitational will feature more than 60 craft beers, live entertainment, beerrelated vendors, beer memorabilia, home brewing demonstrations and a wide variety of local foods from some of Arizona’s best food trucks. For minors and designated drivers, there will be a craft root beer garden offering complimentary handcrafted sodas. “We’re going to continue to fulfill Greg’s mission and share his lifetime love of all things crafty with the Phoenix community,” said Landon Evans, event coordinator. Beer enthusiasts, including home brewers, consumers and novices, will have a chance to sample and learn about more than 25 styles of craft brews from some of the best brewers from Arizona and across the country. Admission into the festival grounds is FREE, however in order to consume beer, all 21-and-over patrons must

purchase the 2013 souvenir mug which comes with 12- 4oz beer samples. Pre-sale online purchase price is $25. Day of purchase is $35. Purchase your pre-sale tickets online at www. phoenixbrewfest.com. Additional beer samples will be available as well, priced at $2 each for a 4 oz sample or $6 for a full 12 oz serving. In addition, there is going to be a VIP admission price that includes an invitation to an open house preview party hosted at Phoenix Ale Brewery on Friday, December 6, from 7-11 p.m. with food provided, beer samples and live entertainment. On Saturday, December 7, the VIP admission includes exclusive access to the VIP beer garden with catered food and treats, private bathrooms, bocce ball playground and a meet and greet with brewers. Clarkdale Unveils Its First Tasting Room-Four Eight Wineworks by Kirstin Havice Four Eight Wineworks opened the first tasting room in Clarkdale last Friday, Oct. 25. Housed in the town’s former National Bank, the space has been remodeled but still keeps some of its original features such as the slatted, wooden teller window and the old vault that’s been turned into a merchandise room. In 1928, the bank was robbed (at that time the Bank of Arizona) of tens of thousands of dollars in payroll by two men who had recently arrived from Oklahoma, becoming the largest bank heist in Arizona history at the time. The tasting room will feature the original pocket watch that belonged to a witness caught in the line of fire but saved when the bullet struck his watch instead of him. While there is a lot of history behind the tasting room location, Four Eight Wineworks is focused on the future. With a few details still to work out before becoming official, it’s set to be the first winemakers cooperative in Northern Arizona. Named in reference to Arizona as the 48th state, Four Eight Wineworks will offer underfunded vintnersa place to make their winealong with a community to support them along the way. Experience will be necessary, as the cooperative is not intended to be a school or custom crush facility. Rather, it will provide the space and equipment so winemakers do not have to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars themselves. Those interested will apply to be part of the cooperative, pay by case to make their wine and showcase their efforts in the tasting room.

Four Eight Wineworks is the creation of Maynard Keenan, owner and winemaker of Caduceus Cellars. “The facility is meant to be an alternating proprietorship where someone with talent and experience can come and be left to create their own destiny with their wine label,” said Keenan. Keenan was one of the first supporters of Yavapai College’s Southwest Wine Center, the premier academic center in Arizona for the study of viticulture and enology, with a fullproduction teaching winery in the works. Four Eight Wineworks is Keenan’s next venture in supporting and growing the Arizona wine industry. He plans to offer the top student of Yavapai College’s program a place at the cooperative. It will also be open to those interested in coming to the Verde Valley from out of state.

Experience the best of California's small, family wineries with convenient deliveries of two award-winning wines. No membership fees, no obligation and every wine is 100% guaranteed.

Opening day featured a handful of wines, including those from Tim White’s Iniquus Cellars and Joe Bechard’s Chateau Tumbleweed. Sitting on Main Street just down from the town square, it’s hoped that the Four Eight Wineworks tasting room will help draw more people to the town. Clarkdale has a lot to offer but has not seen the traffic Old Town Cottonwood and Jerome have seen.

Each year, Arizona Wine Growers Association (AWGA) gears up for an event unlike any other, celebrating the best of the best and recognizing everything our state’s growing wine industry has to offer at the fifth annual Festival at the Farm on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Held at The Farm at South Mountain in Phoenix, 1,000 wine-drinking guests will be able to sample wines and speak with representatives from over 30 locally operated vineyards, spanning from the Verde Valley in the north, Sonoita and Elgin in the south and Willcox in southeastern Arizona. While sampling our state’s wine, The Farm Kitchen will be preparing a picnicstyle lunch, and guests will have the opportunity to attend wine seminars and participate in a live auction throughout the afternoon.

“Whether they are a novice or an aficionado, this is can’t miss event for wine lovers to meet the folks behind the rising Arizona wine movement,” said Peggy Fiandaca, president of the Arizona Wine Growers Association.

from the 2013 Arizona Grower’s Cup and Winemaker’s Medal competition. Winning wineries will be on hand to discuss their personal winemaking philosophy.

Luke Bryan

Bryan’s big year continues

It hasn’t been Luke Bryan’s year alone in country music, but there’s no question he’s been enjoying a fabulous one. Named entertainer of the year at last spring’s Academy of Country Music Awards, the singer-songwriter is riding high on the success of his album and single both titled “Crash My Party,” and he’s sold out concert venues across the country on dual tours. Things may be about to get even better for Bryan, since he has three nominations – including entertainer and male vocalist of the year – in the Country Music Association’s 47th Annual CMA Awards. Bryan will be among the performers as ABC televises the event from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 6, with Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood paired again as the event’s hosts for the sixth consecutive time. Having earned his first two CMA nominations last year, Bryan says he’s “excited about” his trio of chances this time. In a rarity for any artist, he’s scored a couple of clean sweeps: He took both of his categories in the 2010 ACM Awards, and he won all nine awards he was up for at the 2012 American Country Awards, many of those linked to his hit single “I Don’t Want This Night to End.” “It’s pretty surreal,” Bryan muses, adding that at award shows, “I’m like a fan in the room, then I get onstage and do my thing. I just love the award show experience. It’s always a fun night for country music to show what they’ve got, and I really just enjoy being in the moment and being a part of the shows.” That’s not always limited to being a nominee and/or performer. After teaming this past spring with friend Blake Shelton to host the ACM Awards, Bryan has signed up to do it with him again in 2014. “With every phase of this business, I give it all I’ve got,” maintains Bryan. “I exhaust every bit of brainpower on making each experience the best I can, and I just relish being in the game of country music.”

By Brian Mulligan It’s hard to believe but racing fans around the world will be delving into Breeders’ Cup action very soon - so let’s take a look at some divisions and see how they are shaping up for the showdown in Arcadia. There will be 14 races spread out starting Nov1 and at Santa Anita with the finale, the $5 million mile and a quarter Breeders’ Cup Classic. There is no sense starting at the bottom, so how are the Classic contenders coming up to the race? All the young dudes will be trying to beat Game on Dude in the Classic. His sire, Awesome Again, won the BC Classic in 1998 at Churchill and Game on Dude has never been better. He is fresh from a smashing win in the Pacific Classic when he just toyed with his rivals. He broke the record for the largest winning margin and he did the same thing in the Santa Anita Handicap this winter. Dude has raced 8 times at Santa Anita in his career and he has won 7 times. Ironically, Dude will not scare anybody away and a solid field is in prospect for the Classic.

Palace Music, 2nd in the recent Jockey Club Gold Cup, is pointing to the race and Mucho Macho Man, who won the prep for the Classic at Santa Anita, the Awesome Again Stakes and Macho wants revenge for running 2nd in the Classic last year. Aidan O’Brien, who knows a thing or two about shipping from Europe and succeeding in the Breeders Cup, has a classy Classic hopeful in the making. Declaration of War is a seasoned pro for O’Brien. He has won 3 of 7 this year; two were Group 1s and 7 of 12 in his career. One of the best things that Declaration of War has in his favor is his excellent pedigree. His dam was a triple winner but more importantly her dam is kin to Belmont Stakes winner and over $1.7 million earner Union Rags. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is always highly anticipated because the winner will be one of the early favorites for the 2014 Kentucky Derby. This year, the Champagne Stakes could play an important role in the Juvenile. The winner Havana was getting a little tired but he ran well going long but the horse that ran second in the Champagne figures very tough if he goes. That runner is Honor Code, who had a horrible trip but still was coming on strong late.

In the mile and a half BC Turf, only the strong will survive and Little Mike will try to use his speed to steal the race. He just won the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Classic and he will try to defend his Turf title. Indy Point, Big Blue Kitten, Real Solution and European, The Fugue all figure to be very tough with the right trips. The say speed kills but don’t tell the contenders and the pretenders aiming for the BC Sprint at 6 furlongs. The $1.5 million event will bring together the fastest horses on the planet and there is no margin for error. Velocity will be the key and none of the entrants can afford to get stopped with poor racing luck and still succeed. The edge over the years when the Cup has been run in California has been given to the horses from that state so logic says start with Pointsoffthebench, Goldencents and the Santa Anita Sprint Championship third Distinctiv Passion. When handicapping the Cup this year, try to settle in and have a game plan long before heading out to the track or booting up that computer. Look for value and don’t be scared to shoot for the life changing score.

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST On a somewhat sad note, after racing for 75 years and bringing fans some major thrills and spills, Hollywood Park will be running its last and final race meeting this fall. The track opens November 7 and closes for good on December 22. It was sold several years ago to real estate development firm but is just now ending because of the financial picture that has strangled most big projects. Hollywood Park opened in 1938 and some of the biggest names in movies were original shareholders in the track. The exploits of Seabiscuit, Citation, Swaps, Seattle Slew and Cigar all were witness on the hallowed ground. If you have been holding off a vacation to California, one could do much worse than trying to attend Hollywood’s Last Stand.
