a result of your thinking! Your beliefs are holding you right where you are right now. You’re not what you think you are, but…by what you think…you are! Think poor, get poor, stay poor. Think rich, get rich, stay rich. It’s literally a choice… it’s a decision for you to make. Make it… believe it and become it!

MACK NEWTON ON… PROSPERITY I have a crystal clear mental image of this scenario…I was standing in the courtyard of the apartment complex where I rented a small 1-bedroom apartment, retrieving my mail from the mailbox. The complex manager saw me and came out carrying a small white envelope, which she handed to me. I opened it and saw that it was an eviction notice… I had 6 days to move out. This shouldn’t have surprised me since I was 3 months behind on my rent. The manager, who was a very nice lady named Colleen, apologized for bringing me such bad news. I told her that I had been expecting it and I certainly didn’t blame her. Anyway I continued, it didn’t matter because I had already made a decision to become rich. I’ll never forget the look she gave me…she looked at me like I was COMPLETELY out of touch with reality. But it was true… I had made a decision to become rich… and I meant it! It has been my experience that many people believe that when it comes to money, prosperity and wealth accumulation, all the positive thinking, good attitudes and hard work will never make one bit of difference in their ability to pay the bills at the end of the month. Well, the truth of the matter is, our conscious and our subconscious minds are always creating the realities in our lives, INCLUDING determining how much money you make and how much money you have in the bank. Your prosperity, or lack of it, is

Nearly 80% of the population is preoccupied with money problems… not money accumulation, money problems! They don’t think they have enough of it. They think about, worry about money problems from morning ‘till night. This is not a happy, healthy, productive way to live! Many health problems are caused by stress and worry about money. Many problems in relationships are caused by money worries and one of the main causes of divorce is arguments over money. So, you owe it to yourself to develop your abilities and talents so that you can earn enough money so that you don’t have to worry about money. I am not making any judgements here. Money is neither good nor bad. Money is just money… it’s our attitudes towards money that determines how much we get, how much we keep and whether we use it well or not. Decide right now, just as I did years ago… how prosperous you want to be. Imagine that you had a magic wand and could wave it to design your financial life. What would your life look like if you achieved ALL your financial goals? What would you be doing less of? More of? What would you be earning…what kind of lifestyle would you have? The time is now to make a decision. -Mack Newton Mack Newton is an 8th Degree Black Belt, Senior Master Instructor, Global Tae Kwon-Do Federation International and Chairman of the World Technical Committee

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE

‘We Are What We Are’

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

Bill Sage plays the patriarch of a reclusive family who find their secret existence threatened as a torrential downpour moves into their area that forces two daughters (Julia Garner and Ambyr Childers) to assume responsibilities beyond those of a typical family. (R - 105 minutes) Joseph: Perhaps art-house film fans will appreciate “We Are What We Are” but horror flick fans will be beyond bored. Granted, it has got great atmosphere and therefore an ever-present impression of impending doom but the story itself is somewhat of a snooze-fest.

‘The Citizen’ ‘2 Jacks’

‘Zero Charisma’

Danny Huston plays a celebrated movie director who sweeps a gorgeous woman (Sienna Miller) off her feet during a whirlwind trip to Hollywood to raise financing for his latest film. Years later, his son (Jack Huston) shows up in Hollywood eager to bankroll his feature debut. (NR - 90 minutes)

Sam Eidson plays an overweight and overbearing fantasy role-playing gamer who finds his life turned upside-down when a handsome and charismatic hipster (Garrett Graham) joins his game. (NR - 97 minutes)

Stan: Quite fond of the writings of Leo Tolstoy from my school days, writer/director Bernard Rose continues his latest presentation of Tolstoy adaptations with ‘2 Jacks’. Bridging the 1870s societal mores of the story with the trials and tribulations of a son’s emulation of the father’s profession is quite the treat. Joseph: “2 Jacks” will appeal primarily to bibliophiles and English majors whereas the rest of us will be beyond bored. All three leads give great performances but the overly artistic style and story are too tepid to afford us anything except the basic theme of contrasting times.

Stan: The message of living the ‘game of life’ comes through in ‘Zero Charisa’ full of wit, charm, and humor, as the common separator of being on ‘the in or the out’ of that illusive desired social circle one may covet early on, is entertainingly wrapped in this story of a fantasy role playing gamer who rises above the game. Joseph: “Zero Charisma” earns empathy and laughs with themes that will feel familiar to anyone who has ever been a designated “leader” - or an “outcast” - on the way to understanding that you cannot win at the game called life unless you relinquish at least a little control.

Khaled Nabawy plays a man who, yearning to leave behind his life of misfortune in the Middle East, wins the U.S Green Card Lottery for a chance to become an American citizen. He lands in New York City on Sept. 10, 2001. (PG-13 - 99 minutes) Joseph: “The Citizen” - a story of a man who keeps climbing with a smile on his face and his integrity intact - is a source of spectacular inspiration. Sam Kadi’s drama is a true triumph; encouraging viewers to never take for granted what others are willing to fight tooth and nail for.

COLUMNISTS

Writer/Director Jim Mickle (‘We Are What We Are’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“I think that a lot of that comes from organized religion. That is something that I felt strongly about and always wanted to make a movie about. And I think that once we realized if we didn’t make this a story about two brothers battling to be the man of

the house but actually one about two young girls who sort of inherit the chores that their mother has lived her whole life through this would be not only our own story but also our own theme as well. “I hope that viewers take away that questions are OK. That questioning traditions, questioning rituals and questioning what you have been told is OK. It doesn’t mean that you are not faithful. It just means that you are getting to the heart of the issue and making it make sense for yourself. I grew up in a family that was very much ‘make up your own mind and make your own decisions’ - not just with religion but with philosophy as well. I had a lot of freedom from my parents and I always thought that was a pretty bold move on their part.

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With more than 22 years of experience in media production, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. So hopefully someone who watches this movie comes away feeling like that is something that is OK to do.” Jim Mickle

‘Behind-the-Scenes’ - ‘The Summit’ Filmmaker Nick Ryan, using locations in Switzerland and green screen technology to double for K2, the second highest mountain peak in

the world, recounts the story of the deadliest day on the world’s most dangerous mountain, when 11 climbers mysteriously perished on K2. We as viewers knowing the outcome of that infamous climb in August of 2008,

Randy Montgomery’s reactions reveal the emotional intuition of an average moviegoer. With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. By Stan Robinson

RANDY MONTGOMERY

“I think that it started in an effort to make it our own and something that would say, ‘OK, this obviously isn’t the original film.’ But as it went on, it kind of took on a life all its own. To me, one of the biggest things about it is the religious aspect. What became really interesting once we did flip the genders is that we were able to point out a lot of the ways that religion can weigh pretty heavily on the females in that faith and a lot of the ways that old men dictate what women are allowed to do.

Complementing Jade Bar’s signature cocktails is a “secret” menu of classic drinks as well as non-alcoholic options that include a tempting selection of healthy elixirs. A small plates menu, exclusive to the bar, has been created by Sanctuary’s celebrated executive chef, Beau MacMillan. These include shishito peppers, chicken liver mousse, citrus cured salmon, fire roasted bone marrow and crème brûlée donuts.

THE MICHAEL J. FOX SHOW 8:30 p.m. on NBC Mike (Michael J. Fox) tries to improve his relationship with Eve (Juliette Goglia) by getting her an internship at the station. Things don’t go as planned, however, when she takes a liking to Susan (Anne Heche).

RIGHTEOUS RIDE! young skateboarders Jagger and Jett Eaton, and Trey Wood — are homeschooled in an effort to maximize the time they spend practicing their sport. Alana and her closest friends skate at Kids That Rip in Mesa. Because of her big win in Barcelona, Alana was recently named the “Youngest Athlete to Medal at the X Games” by the Guinness Book of World Records. Despite the accolades, she emphasizes that it is the X Games experience that stands out to her. “The X Games were great,” she says, adding how she got to see tourist attractions and joked that she and her mom kept getting lost. “The venue was amazing; it was my first time overseas.”

Valley skateboarder Alana Smith becomes the youngest athlete to medal at the X Games By Michelle Talsma Everson One of Alana Smith’s early childhood memories is watching the X Games on TV with her dad. “I saw the skateboarding on the X Games and said, ‘I want to do that,’” she recalls. By age 7, she got her first skateboard and, this past May, she earned a silver medal in the Women’s Park skateboard division during the X Games in Barcelona. The most impressive part? She’s only 12 years old.

While the X Games win was big, it certainly wasn’t Alana’s first time breaking records or winning awards. This past April, she placed 59th against 200 male competitors at the Phoenix AM. And late last year, she became the first female to land a McTwist in competition. The milestone move happened at Exposure 2012, an allwomen’s skateboard competition in California. “It [the day she landed the McTwist] was the best day of my life,” Alana says.

When asked what it’s like to compete in a “guys’ sport,” Alana comments, “I don’t really think about it anymore, it’s just what I do.” Still, the tweenaged athlete wants to encourage other girls to skateboard and hopes to break some barriers while she’s at it. “I’m always talking to young girls,” she notes. “There are not too many skateboard events for girls.” “I think she wants to inspire other girls that anything is possible and to never give up,” Ryonna adds.

AZSAL Fast Facts

When looking toward the future, Alana says she plans to be “skating until I literally can’t walk.” While she hopes to build a professional career as a skateboarder — she’s obviously well on her way — she also has her sights set on getting good grades and eventually becoming a lawyer, too. In the more immediate future, though, she plans to compete in more X Games and hopefully be accepted into other competitions that are traditionally for guys only. Oh yeah, and she’s entering the seventh grade this fall.

Alana is the oldest child in her family; she has three little sisters who currently don’t plan to follow in her skateboarding footsteps.

How did this pint-size skateboarding wonder make the leap from X Games fan to silver medalist? It’s a progression that seemed almost natural, according to Alana and her mom, Ryonna Smith. “I knew at 18 months old that she was adventurous; she just showed no fear,” Ryonna says. “Before skateboarding she was into dirt bikes, so I prefer the skateboarding anyways!” Alana says that her mom was the first person who took her skateboarding and, when it was evident that she was a natural, the whole family got on board to support her. Now, just a few short years later, skateboarding is her life; so much so that Alana and her crew — which includes other talented

Alana Smith’s role model is skateboarding champ Mimi Knoop. “She [Knoop] is always helping girls, showing people that we can skate and getting events to happen for us.” Some of Alana’s top sponsors include Kids That Rip, hoopla skateboards, DC shoes, Triple Eight protective gear and 187 Killer Pads.

She competes and places in contests that are street, vert or bowl (the main types of skateboarding). Her only major injury so far? She broke her humerus bone and had to lay off skating for a month. For more great sports and lifestyle info, read AZ Sports & Lifestyle Magazine. www.AZSAL.com

Three straight top-five finishes to start NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup is nothing to be ashamed of. But if you’re Kyle Busch, you’re frustrated. That’s because the driver of the No. 18 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing, who as of early October had yet to win a postseason race, sat third in the Chase standings, behind the drivers who did win those races, Matt Kenseth (Chicagoland and Loudon) and Jimmie Johnson (Dover). Ah, wins – the one statistic that will gain you the most points in the Chase standings and the one thing that has eluded Busch in the playoffs in his career. In fact, going back to the inception of the Chase in 2004, Busch has managed to win only one race in any given season’s final 10, and that was at Phoenix in ’05, when he wasn’t in championship contention. His numbers over 52 Chase races (five-plus seasons) are just as lackluster: 14 top-fives and 22 top-10s to go with zero wins and poles and an average Chase finish of 17.73. The only current Chase driver with a worse average finish is first-timer Joey Logano with 18.0 through three races.

BEER!

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

BEER STYLES PART 7 As we finish up beer styles, we will hit on a couple of more mainstream styles and we will touch on a favorite of mine, mead.

beers either 1) remove the alcohol from a fully brewed beer, or 2) control the levels of alcohol produced in the brewing process itself by inhibiting normal fermentation.

Light / Lite Lager - Light versions of pale or premium lagers, the light lager style generally covers low calorie or low carbohydrate beers that typically have less than 125 calories in a 12oz serving. Adjuncts (like rice and corn) are frequently used and the aroma, flavors, and body are thin. Light lagers normally finish dry and can have lower alcohol levels. Pale Lager - Pale lagers are the most broadly consumed and widely branded style of beer in the world. The color can range from very pale colors to light copper. Adjuncts like corn and rice are frequently employed to lighten the body and cheapen the costs, although some are produced adjunct free and often have more detectable malt and hop levels. Strong Lager - Somewhat of a catchall category for strong lagers that do not fit in any other, this style features classic American malt liquors (which are typically higher alcohol versions of American pale lagers) and European strong lagers (which are typically higher alcohol versions of Eastern European and Asian lagers). The American malt liquors are typically made with high ratios of non-malt adjuncts like rice and corn, while the European strong lagers are made from lower adjunct to malt ratios (some adjunct free) and higher hop levels. Imperial Pilsners are not included in this style. Bohemian / Czech Pilsner - The Bohemian Pilsner is a golden, pale colored lager originating in 1842 in the Czech Republic and which was later adopted by German brewers who created their own German Pilsner style. (Ultimately, a good majority of the world’s pale lagers distantly resemble a pilsner in their base style.) The poured pilsner can be a beautiful site as they are often brilliantly clear, display

significant carbonation in the glass, and crowned with fluffy white pillowy heads. They are brewed mostly with pils malts and European / German noble hop varieties, Saaz being a key component of the original Bohemian versions. The aromas and flavors display grainy and sometimes biscuit-like malts (honey and sulfur-like accents are not abnormal), yet normally feature most prominently a firm hop presence which can yield a strong bitterness and floral, spicy, or grassy qualities. The mouthfeel on these beers are typically medium to medium-high in carbonation with a crisp and even dry finish. Imperial Pilsner - The imperial pilsner is a stronger version of a Pilsner, having a higher hop content (and therefore usually more bitter) and greater malt and alcohol levels, raising the complexity and depth typical of the base style. The flavors and aromas are therefore comparable to a pilsner, much like in the ale world an IPA or DIPA might compare to a Pale Ale. This Imperial Pilsner style has risen in popularity among innovative US craft brewers during the last five years and is used to distinguish a specific class of beers from standard pilsners or basic strong lagers. Rauchbiers - (“smoked beers”) are smoked beers of just about any German style, which are derived from smoked

malt. The original and prime example of the style is specifically a Marzen-based lager that is made from Beech woodsmoked malt. The style dates back to the sixteenth century and to the city of Bamberg in Franconia, Germany. The key added character to this style of beer is obviously the smoky aroma and flavor, although the level of smoking can vary from light to very strong. The overall flavor can be a somewhat balanced and complex blend of malt, hops, and smoke, with some finishing with a gentle sweetness. While the appearance can range in color (depending on the base style), rauchbiers are typically covered with a fairly rich and creamy head. Rauchbiers on average tend to be more “smoked” than beers found in the “Smoked Ale” style. Reduced Alcohol - This category covers just about any style of beer that is produced in the Non-Alcoholic (NA) range of < 0.5% ABV or in the low alcohol range of 0.5 to about 3.0% ABV. The NA beers are typical in the North American market, while the latter are common in Europe, particularly for summer time and physical activities. While the reduced alcohol beers should resemble the underlying style they are “brewed” in, they will undoubtedly have less aroma, flavor, and body, due to the absence or reduced levels of alcohol. The producers of these reduced alcohol

Vienna / Amber Lager - The Vienna lager originated in the Vienna, Austria area and is of an amber to copper or even reddish brown color. They are medium-bodied malty (toasted or light roasted features) beers with only a mild sweetness, a lightly bitterred hop balance, and a somewhat dry finish. Vienna lagers are lighter than dunkel lagers and the flavors not as rich as those of a Marzen. Amber lagers are a global extension of this style and represent similar lagers but with a more variety of interpretation, including vast degrees of malting and hopping, the addition of caramel flavors, and more overall sweetness that is sometimes derived from the inclusion of non-malt adjuncts like corn and rice. Mead - Meads are fermented products made primarily from honey, water, and yeast. Although they are not technically “beers” (they lack malt and only Braggot meads tend to have a hopping option) they are one of the earliest forms of fermentation known to man and a significant historical predecessor to the art and science of brewing beer. The flavors range from sweet to dry and the strengths from extremely strong (~20% ABV) to low (~3.5% ABV). Secondary ingredients and chemicals such as citrus fruits, tea, oak, and tannin may be used to adjust the final product qualities. Aging is also a key factor in obtaining the desired end product. Perhaps some other time we will devote an entire article to this magnificent beverage So ends our primer on beer styles. It is by no means comprehensive, heck; I doubt that it’s even accurate. Regardless, I hope you have enjoyed what you have learned over the past couple of months. Next week, look for some in-depth coverage on the recently concluded Great American Beer Festival.

Hello again craft beer lovers, today let’s chat about the success Arizona breweries had at this year’s Great American Beer Festival, because there’s quite a lot to speak about.

BEER! SECTION

WINNING! ARIZONA BREWERIES @ GABF 2013

Let’s begin with local favorites Four Peaks Brewing and two medals. First up is my favorite beer in the world Hop Knot which took silver in the Extra or Strong Pale Category. I have said many times that for a hoppy west coast thirst quencher this beer simply cannot be beat. Second is of course East Valley favorite Kilt Lifter Scottish Style Amber which also took a silver medal. Two medals is a hard act to follow, but East Valley newcomers Fate Brewing have broken through and made their first mark at GABF with a silver medal for their Candy Bar Milk Stout. For those unaware, this brew has been making big waves with beer geeks all over town and is a must try when you find yourself in Scottsdale. Following Fate is Flagstaff’s own Lumberyard Brewing and a gold medal for their American Pale Ale. It’s just amazing how consistently these guys win. If I’m not mistaken, last year they won gold for their IPA. This is a big deal for such a small brewery in Flagstaff AZ. It’s almost as if GABF wasn’t complete until Lumberyard was awarded another medal for their always amazing brews. Very Cool!

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

Lastly, we can’t forget Thunder Canyon Brewing from Tucson. They round out this year’s winners with a bronze medal for their Dark Lightning Milk Stout. You have probably heard me say before that if you haven’t been down to Tucson lately, you are really missing out! Thunder Canyon has very quietly become one of Arizona’s best kept secrets and is very very good! Until next week, Cheers!

Finally, Avery Brewing announced their return to Arizona. Look for White Rascal, Ellie’s Brown, IPA, Reverend and all the rest sometime real soon.

We expect to have more next week on GABF, but for now, this should suffice.

11th Annual Thanksgiving Poker Tournament A great Poker Tournament - an even greater cause SAWYER BROWN Friday, November 8

TESLA Saturday & Sunday, November 9 & 10

By Phil Scudella One of my favorite poker tournaments is coming up Saturday November 16th at The Arena Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale – The 11th Annual Thanksgiving Charity Poker Tournament.

An Evening with

It certainly is one event I go out of my way to attend - And I am not the only one that feels that way about this tournament. Now, just like any poker tournament the thought of winning first place is paramount, but just participating in this event to most players, seems to be just as important.

Sure the $12,500 Guaranteed Prize Pool is attractive, and the $3,100 1st place prize is also nice, but the things that make this tournament really special is the low $75 buy-in ($50 entry fee w/ $25 s/c) Now add-in the fact that $25 of every entry fee goes to the United Food Bank here locally to feed the hungry – That is pretty special. You can say what you want about poker players, (they show no emotion, not friendly, don’t interact, ruthless) but I can attest to this truth - when it comes to helping out a cause, these men and women are right there digging into their pockets to help.

GEORGE CLINTON and Parliament Funkadelic Friday, November 15

KOOL & THE GANG Friday, November 29

CELEBRATED FLUTISTS SIR JAMES GALWAY AND LADY JEANNE GALWAY PERFORM WITH THE IRISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Saturday, November 9th at 8pm Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present the Irish Chamber Orchestra featuring conductor JoAnn Falletta and flutists Sir James Galway and Lady Jeanne Galway on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. Regarded as the supreme interpreter of the classical flute repertoire and a consummate entertainer whose appeal crosses all musical boundaries, Sir James Galway will perform in Scottsdale as part of a 13-city tour across nine states. The tour celebrates the Belfast-born flutist’s heritage and his long partnership with JoAnn Falletta, as well as with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, with which he made his American debut 35 years ago. One of the busiest artists in classical music, Sir James has performed across the world with the leading orchestras, the most prestigious conductors and for numerous world dignitaries. He held the coveted position of solo flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan, launching his career as a soloist in 1975, and boasts a discography of more than 65 recordings. Featured on the program is Lady Jeanne Galway, one of the leading female flute soloists of the decade in addition to a frequent duet partner in concert with her husband – a distinctive musical rapport that has delighted audiences worldwide. This tour is also a special reunion for Lady Galway and JoAnn Falletta who were students together at the Mannes College of Music in New York City, where they often played flute and guitar duets. (Later, Lady Galway would serve as Falletta’s principal flute at the Queens Philharmonic.) Sir James and Lady Galway will premiere Belfast composer Philip Hammond’s Carolan Variations, a work inspired by tunes by Irish harpist Turlough O’Carolan, in a new version

for two flutes and chamber orchestra. The program also will feature Hamilton Harty’s Fantasy for Flute and Orchestra, In Ireland, and, one of Sir James’ signature works, Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2 in D major. Falletta and the Irish Chamber Orchestra also will perform Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony No. 41. The Irish Chamber Orchestra has earned a remarkable reputation as a fresh and vibrant force on the Irish and international music scene. With an annual season in Limerick and Dublin, and tours countrywide, the ensemble collaborates with some of the world’s finest musicians and excels in a diverse repertoire ranging from classical to modern-day masterpieces and new commissions. The orchestra also has toured the United States with pianist Leon Fleischer, and across Europe, Australia and Asia. JoAnn Falletta serves as music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic and Virginia Symphony in the United States and principal conductor of the Ulster Orchestra in Northern Ireland. She has guest conducted more than 100 orchestras in North America, and many of the most prominent orchestras in Europe, Asia and South America. She is the principal guest conductor of The Phoenix Symphony and Brevard Music Center of North Carolina. Tickets are available for $109, $89 and $79 online at www. ScottsdalePerformingArts.org or through (480) 499-TKTS (8587).
