The Palms Theatre Brings the Heat for Inaugural Musical Production Menopause the Musical® Kicks off the 2013-2014 Season

Friday, October 18th | Saturday, October 19th

The Prather Entertainment Group is proud to announce the opening of The Palms Theatre in Mesa. Formerly known as Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, the grand opening will take place October 24, 2013 to kick off the 2013-2014 season with the runaway hit musical comedy, Menopause the Musical® , running October 24th through November 23rd, with both evening and matinee performances. In a marketing association with Black Dog Promotions, Menopause the Musical® promises to be an audience favorite, as popular as it was when it ran at Prather Entertainment Group’s other theatres, where the musical routinely had sold-out performances. The show is a non-stop feast of singing, dancing, witty dialogue and parodies from the ‘60’s, 70’s and 80’s that will resonate with a wide audience.

FOR TICKETS

480.924.6260 | ThePalmsTheatre.com

5247 E. Brown Road, Mesa 85205

Menopause the Musical® is set in a department store, where four women with nothing in common but a black

A sisterhood is formed between these diverse women when they realize that menopause is no longer “The Silent Passage” and is made easier with a bit of humor. If anyone knows the dangers of infidelity these days – fictionally, at least – it’s Hannah Ware. The former “Boss” co-star is playing a dangerous game on several levels in “Betrayal,” ABC’s new Sunday drama. She stars as Sara Hanley, a wife, mother and photographer whose passionate affair with a prestigious family’s lawyer (Stuart Townsend) is enmeshing her ever more deeply in intrigue ... particularly since her lover is pitted against her husband in a murder trial. “I think what really pulled me to it,” Ware explains, “is, in terms of my story as Sara, it’s an encounter that could happen to anyone. And I felt that it was very relatable. I gravitated towards Sara because you meet her in this point in her life where things seem fine and great, but she’s sort of struggling not only within her marriage. “And it’s not that she has a terrible marriage, by any means. She actually has quite a good one, in my view. Not that I’m married, but it’s not like it’s a completely dysfunctional relationship. And it’s not black and white.” Professionally, Ware adds, Sara is “struggling to find her voice creatively, so she’s sort of in that weird free-falling period, which I think lots of people can identify with and relate to. And I was really interested by that.” Making “Betrayal” marks a welcome return to the Windy City for Ware, who played its mayor’s (Kelsey Grammer) troubled daughter during the twoseason Starz run of “Boss.” “I love Chicago,” she confirms. “It’s one of these cities I’d never even really thought about, other than it’s got wonderful architecture, and I’m very interested in architecture. But it wasn’t somewhere I was desperate to go. And then ‘Boss’ happened, and then I read a lot of books surrounding Chicago politics and things like that. I just really enjoy it a lot.”

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE

‘Sweetwater’

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

In the late 1800s, a fanatical religious leader (Jason Isaacs), a renegade Sheriff (Ed Harris), and a former prostitute (January Jones) collide in a blood triangle on the rugged plains of the New Mexico Territory. (R - 95 minutes) Joseph: “Sweetwater” looks appealing but the eccentric revenge fantasy set in the Old West is so selfishly obsessed with its own exaggerated loquaciousness and far-fetched features that it forgets to actually entertain its audience.

‘CBGB’

‘Snow Queen’

Alan Rickman plays Hilly Kristal who, in 1973, started a groundbreaking Lower East Side club as a home for New York’s dynamic punk rock scene, showcasing cutting-edge bands. (R - 101 minutes)

Jessica Straus plays a young woman who journeys across an icy land, facing difficult obstacles and meeting wonderful new friends, in a quest to set her imprisoned brother (Marianne Miller) free, defeat an ice-cold queen (Cindy Robinson) and save the world from eternal frost. (NR 80 minutes)

Joseph: “CBGB” will likely be sweet music to the ears of anyone who has ever been into the punk scene. Unfortunately, everyone else will likely hear nothing but a bunch of noise as the mild amusement is drowned out by all of the chaos of the club.

Joseph: “Snow Queen’s” chilly landscapes look amazing but the characters lack the same visual appeal. Moreover, the movie is too loud and obnoxious to appeal to adults while its plot is too complicated and convoluted to be understood by kids.

‘Behind-the-Scenes’ ~ ‘Gravity’ By Stan Robinson Director/co-writer Alfonso Cuarón and his production team delivers an on-screen magnificent environment that literally transports us into space as we see and feel the vastness of the universe as the realization encompasses us that space is truly the

unknown frontier. In the story, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play a medical engineer and anastronaut, who work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space. (PG-13 - 90 minutes)

Actor Danny Trejo (‘Machete’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“I think that the underlying message is that the bad guys never win. Good guys win. I just love that message. Anything else that you want to get out of it is up to you. But it deals with a lot of bad stuff and the bad guys lose. There are two kinds of people in the world. There are those who want to make a difference and those who are taking up space.

“Because of where I have been, it is really easy for me to keep an attitude of gratitude. I have done movies where we have been in the desert and I hear people complaining, ‘It’s too hot.’ And I’ll think, ‘Let me see. The fifth tier in San Quentin [State Prison] during the summer is a lot hotter than this.’ It’s all relative. So I’ll say, ‘I’ll tell you what we’ll do. Give me some suntan lotion and let’s all get tans.’” - Danny Trejo

“I took up space for a long time [until] I decided that I wanted to make a difference. I have dedicated my life to helping other people. I’ll help anybody. I don’t care what it is. You have just got to help somebody and do that every day. They talk about

Actor Jason Isaacs (‘Sweetwater’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“It is so unusual. It looks from the street like a Western. We have got the hats, we have got the horses. And there are dresses. And there are guns. But it is indescribable in terms of genre. But it is certainly thrilling and unusual and twisted and dark. Although it has an outlandish plot and some outrageous sequences, you are diving into the lives of complicated people and that is rarely seen on screen I think. “One of the joys about having the Miller brothers write and direct it is that they are fresh filmmakers. They absolutely refused to adhere to all of the normal rules of storytelling. They didn’t want to do all the things that years of filmmaking would lead them to do. So what

is refreshing as an audience member and as one of the actors taking part is that you are telling a story like I do my children. “They lie there at night and I am making it up. I don’t have a structure in mind. It is not schematically planned. It is a story that unfolds. And that is what happens. This story gathers a kind of unstoppable and deeply unpleasant momentum and somehow they make it enjoyable along the way. Somehow there is a pleasure to be taken in the violence; there is a pleasure to be taken in the revenge; and yet nothing ever works out how anybody wants. Life is more complicated than that.” - Jason Isaacs

JOSEPH J. AIRDO

In “Machete Kills,” Danny Trejo reprises his role as an anti-hero who, this time, is recruited by the U.S. government to battle his way through Mexico in order to take down an arms dealer (Mel Gibson) who looks to launch a weapon into space.

ost restaurateurs will tell you they got into the business out of a love of preparing food but often found themselves devoting most or all of their time to administrative functions. There is, after all, much to be done: the books, the setting of the menu, the buying of the food, the actual running of the restaurant, and the hiring and firing of employees. Ah, the employees. Getting and keeping good ones can often be the biggest challenge a restaurant owner faces and can often make or break the business. Mario Batali, co-host of ABC’s daytime food show “The Chew,” knows. As a chef and co-owner of 24 restaurants across the U.S., including Babbo in New York and B&B Ristorante in Las Vegas, he’s seen his share of staffing issues over the years and says the problem in the industry seems to be getting worse.

LEADING THE CHARGE After a breakout campaign last season, Taylor Kelly and the Arizona State Sun Devils look to raise the bar in 2013 By Byron Kline At first glance, he may not pass the proverbial “eye test” for elite starting quarterbacks in college football — he’s only 6-foot-2. In fact, you could argue that he’s neither the most natural passer nor the quickest quarterback on the Arizona State roster. But Taylor Kelly is the ideal blend of passing and speed, and he’s the engine that makes head coach Todd Graham’s highoctane Sun Devil offense run. He catapulted to the top of the ASU depth chart last year following a strong fall camp and hit the ground running in 2012, leading Arizona State to its first winning season in five years. Kelly capped it off with a dramatic come-from-behind victory against rival Arizona, as well as ASU’s first bowl win since 2005. Now, with a full year’s worth of experience under his belt, Sun Devil fans are anxious to see where Photo Credit Steve Rodriguez

Kelly can lead the team next. It’s amazing how quickly things can change in just a year. Last summer, the Sun Devils were preparing for the start of fall camp, mired in a tightly contested quarterback competition while trying to adjust to the demands of their new head coach, Todd Graham. Kelly entered the offseason a distant third on the Sun Devil depth chart following an inconsistent spring performance, prompting many to believe it was just a two-player battle for the starting quarterback position between redshirt freshmen Mike Bercovici and Michael Eubank. Instead, Kelly quickly emerged as the overwhelming favorite because of his strong command of the Sun Devil offense and his improved passing accuracy. Kelly played his first game as starting quarterback in the season opener against Northern Arizona, guiding the Sun Devils to a 63-6 win, and he never looked back. With Kelly at the helm, ASU finished the year with an 8-5 record and was the 14th highestscoring team in the nation, averaging 38.4 points per game. He passed for 3,039 yards, 29 touchdowns and just nine interceptions, setting the school record for both passing efficiency (159.88 points) and completion percentage (67.1 percent), while finishing one touchdown shy of equaling the school record. The 6-foot-2, 203-pound redshirt junior was also the team’s third leading

rusher, totaling 516 yards on the ground and providing Arizona State with another multi-dimensional weapon in its offensive arsenal. Kelly’s remarkably efficient and productive first year as the Sun Devil signal caller helped vault ASU from the depths of the Pac-12 and back into contention for the South division title, where they finished second to UCLA .

Of course, another quarterback that Kelly watched and idolized growing up was fellow Idaho native and former Sun Devil great, Jake “The Snake” Plummer. At the end of spring camp in April, Plummer visited the team and met with Kelly individually to discuss his development as a player and the importance of being a leader for his Sun Devil team.

Appropriately, the Sun Devil team motto for 2013 is “Any Challenge,” which is prominently displayed throughout the football offices on signs and shirts worn by players and coaches. A winning record is no longer the goal in Tempe. That’s already been accomplished. Instead, the Sun Devils have their eyes set on a division title and a conference championship. With renewed focus and higher expectations, Kelly and his teammates began their offseason workouts with the vigor and poise of a team with its sights set on winning a BCS bowl game.

“I watched him growing up, mostly as a player for the Denver Broncos, so to have him come back here and to talk to him was incredible,” Kelly said. “We spent three hours just talking about life, football, and the opportunities that he had. He told me to keep working, continue to grow, and just be the best that I can.”

Of course, it was that Arizona State defense that provided the biggest challenge for Kelly throughout the offseason. The Sun Devils, who finished second nationally in sacks and tackles for loss in 2012, are anchored by returning All-American Will Sutton and Carl Bradford, an explosive hybrid linebacker who stormed onto the scene last season and, coincidentally, is Kelly’s roommate. The pistol formation has been added to the ASU offense to help counter the aggressive Sun Devil defense, a scheme suited to match Kelly’s talents. Coming out of Eagle High School in Idaho, Kelly was heavily recruited by the University of Nevada — a team known for its pistol offense — to be the heir apparent to current San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kapernick, who Kelly says he models his game after. “It’s a great formation to disguise where you’re going with the football,” commented Kelly. “It’s hard for defenses because the running back lines up right behind me and can go either way with it. By using the pistol, it’s going to help us out tremendously and be hard for defenses to scheme for us now.”

In one year as the starting quarterback, Kelly helped turn around a Sun Devil program that had spent the last five years floundering in anonymity. Now it has a new identity and some new goals. With another strong season, 2013 can be a stepping stone for future success for both Kelly and the Sun Devils. While the task may be daunting, don’t expect Kelly to shy away from the challenge. He’s already hard at work. “I know I’ve got to work even harder now,” he said. “There aren’t any days off, because the things that we can do this year, it’s crazy and the sky’s the limit for us.” AZ SAL Fast Facts: • Taylor Kelly was the only player in the state of Idaho to sign a national letter of intent with a BCS school in 2010. • Was the 2009-10 Gatorade Idaho Football Player of the Year. • Set the ASU record for passing efficiency and completion percentage in first year as starting quarterback. • Enjoys drag racing with his dad during the summer in Idaho. BEER STYLES PART 6 As we move into lagers, we are down to our last couple of issues of beer styles, which means I will have to start thinking of things to write about again. No problem, there are plenty of great article ideas out there to steal. All beers are essentially lagers or ales. The term lager comes from the German word, “lagern,” which means to store away (cellar). Lagers are brewed using bottom fermenting yeasts at cool temperatures near 50-55F. The lager yeasts produce less byproducts than ale yeasts and normally result in a more simple and crisp flavor. The lower temperatures require longer fermentation periods and these beers are then stored away for weeks (at about 35F) before maturing. Most lagers can be sub classified into one of the many lager categories. However, hard to place or classify lagers can be found in the generic “lager” category. Biere de Garde - A Northern French artisanal farmhouse ale, the biere de garde style covers a range of sub varieties, including blond, amber, and brown. Examples across each sub variety all emphasize the malty (most commonly earthy, toasty, toffee, and caramel) character of the beer and frequently have a musty cellared attribute (the name, biere de garde, can be literally translated as “beer of keeping,” and refers to the months long cold conditioning - lagering - of these beers after fermentation). The darker versions have more complex flavors and the hops are normally more subdued, while the lighter versions allow the hops to come through stronger (but still secondary to the rich maltiness). The mouthfeel of a biere de garde is typically moderate to heavy and the alcohol levels can be in the higher 8% ABV range. The biere de garde style can be brewed with lager or ale yeasts, but under cooler ale fermentation temperatures.

Bock - A deep golden (Helles Bocks & Maibocks) to brown (Traditional Bocks) colored lager, which originated in the German town of Einbeck as early as the 14th century. After being resurrected in Munich three centuries later, this style errantly became known as “bock” (which also means “billy-goat” in German) instead of “beck.” The bock beer is malty rich and sweet (but not overly sweet) and typically contains bready, toasted, even caramel flavors that are in some cases lightly balanced but never overcome by hops. The alcohol level is higher than the average beer but does not dominate the aroma or flavor. The body of a bock is medium to just under full-bodied. The smooth character of a lager should come through in the bock. Doppelbock - The doppelbock (a “double” bock) originated in Munich, Germany as a next generation bock beer. They range in color from deep golden to dark ruby or brown. Like its predecessor (the bock), doppelbocks feature the rich malty aromas and flavors of bready, toasted, and caramel notes. But, doppelbocks are typically more complex and can include dark fruits (plum, prune, raisin, grapes) and sometimes chocolate aspects, especially for the darker versions. Doppelbocks are full-bodied beers and although stronger than the basic bock, they are never overcome by the higher alcohol or by the hops. Many doppelbocks today have an “-ator” suffix attached to their name.

Eisbock - Eisbocks are concentrated doppelbocks, where the original doppelbock is frozen and a fraction of the ice/water is then removed to intensify the flavor and alcohol level in the beer. Their aroma, flavor, and mouthfeel are therefore comparable in kind to doppelbocks, yet significantly stronger and heavier and with deeper and darker colors. With alcohol concentrations as high as 30% ABV, eisbocks can be quite warming and represent one of the strongest styles of beer. California Common / Steam - An entirely American creation, the California Common (or “Steam Beer,” which is trademarked by Anchor Brewing) originated in California in the 19th century when and where ice was not readily available. This style is therefore somewhat of a hybrid lager(-ale), which is brewed with strains of lager yeast that can effectively ferment under higher than normal (for lagers) temperatures (55-60F). At these temperatures, the lager yeasts can produce light fruity flavors that are often found in ales, while still retaining some crisp lager qualities of the beer. Additional characterstics of this style include noticeable hopping (woody and/or minty) and a basic toasted caramel malt base. The Common beers are normally clear amber to copper in color with a medium body. Dunkel / Dark Lager - This group includes two distinguishable sub styles: American (and some macro European) dark lagers, as well as the Munich dunkel lager (dark lager). The former style is fairly straight forward and the less exciting of the two, encompassing copper to brown lagers with light bodies and balanced low hop and malt flavors (and often corn or rice adjuncts). The Munich dunkel lager version of these dark lagers is darker (deep copper or red-brown to dark brown) and has more prominent malt (no adjuncts, but bready, biscuit, chocolate, nutty, and sometimes light roastiness) and noble hop flavors. The hops and maltiness of

a dunkel are normally well-balanced (not very sweet or too bitter) with a moderate body (ie. lighter than a bock or schwarzbier). Schwarzbier - A dark brown to black German lager, the schwarzbier (“black beer”) is surprisingly lighter bodied than its color would suggest. Schwarzbiers, while not weak in malt character, tend to emphasize a hoppy bitterness and often finish somewhat dry and with a medium mouthfeel. Roasted, overly bitter, and sweet flavors do not overrun these beers like in many stouts or porters, although they can display some chocolate, caramel, and light coffee aspects (short of anything “burnt”). Schwarzbiers can be a pretty sight to look at with their dark bodies and fairly persistent tan heads. Helles / Dortmunder - These two lager styles are very similar and are often grouped as only one style. The helles (“bright”) style originated in the Munich / Bavaria areas of Germany, while the Dortmunder from Dortmund in Northern Germany. Both are golden yellow pale lagers with somewhat showy white heads. They feature grainy, bready, biscuity, even cookie-like (but never caramel) malt backbones with a noticeable hops presence (Dortmunders tend to be slightly more hopped than Helles). Both styles fall short of the hop levels typical of Pilsners, but they are crisp and clean, somewhat balanced lagers with a sometimes dry finish. Both also make for good “session” beers due to their high drinkability. Kellerbier - Unfiltered and unpasteurized lager beers that originated in Story continued on page 42

the Middle Ages in Germany, kellerbiers (“cellar beers”) are incompletely lagered beers that are therefore less carbonated and slightly sweeter than their fully lagered counterparts would be. Kellerbiers can theoretically be produced using any lager-based style, although Helles might be the most common. Their appearance is typically cloudy due to the vitamin rich yeast present in the beer and hopping levels can be fairly significant. These beers are traditionally matured in deep vaults open to the surrounding air (unbunged). Marzen / Oktoberfest - Marzens originated in Bavaria, Germany and were traditionally brewed in the Spring (March) to close out the cool weather brewing season before the coming hot summer months could spoil beer. During the summer, these beers were cellared in cold caves and later brought out with the cooler weather for Autumn festivals, including the renowned Oktoberfest in late September. Marzens

are an adaptation of the Vienna style lager with higher malt depth (sometimes light sweetness), typically higher alcohol levels, and noticeable but low hop bitterness. They are golden-amber to deep copper in color and emphasize bready, biscuity, and lightly toasted malt flavors. One of the things you may notice about lagers is that many of the categories have sub categories included. This is primarily due to the regional nature of many of these beers. For example a beer brewed in Munich may end up being very similar, but not exactly the same, as a style being developed in Dortmund. Because these beers have such close connections they are frequently categorized together. Next time we will follow up on the Great American Beer Festival and then stay tuned for our final installment of Beer Styles. After that, it’s back to the drawing board.

BEER! SECTION OKTOBERFEST IN THE VALLEY! By “King” James Swann Hello again beer lovers, today let’s chat about Oktoberfest and all the great parties that went on this last week. Did you get out to any if not all of them? I hope so, because if not you really missed out! First off was the party at SanTan Brewing Company. Now in its fifth year, this celebration is held outside the brewery building in the adjacent park and let me tell you, it’s a party! With fun competitions such as drunken tricycle races and keg lifting contests, plus live music from The Expendables, you were sure to get sucked into the fun. Now most importantly, SanTan also debuts their yearly Oktoberfest brew on this day as well and it’s delicious. Next up was a party on the West Side of town at Caballero Grill and Tap Room. These guys really put on a show this year with a three day outdoor festival sponsored by Pitcher of Nectar, a local beer distributor. Never have I seen so many craft German beer choices in one place. The beer selection was simply amazing, covering every style from Marzen Lagers to Berliner Weiss and even Sours. I took some time to compete in the keg roll races which were quite a bit of fun and sampled at least three different sausages with kraut, all while maintaining a great buzz! The live music was provided by a band from California called Safety Orange who made it all come together quite nicely.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

Last but not least, this was also the weekend for New Belgium’s Tour De Fat Celebration in Tempe - and it goes without saying that this event is always one worth remembering. I learned something quite important about this party as well. All proceeds from the event fund Bicycle Advocacy groups and stay right here in Arizona! Until Next Week, Cheers!

GABF PREVIEW As the nation’s brewers continue to revolutionize the American beer scene, beer lovers from around the world will descend upon Denver for the 32nd annual Great American Beer Festival (GABF). Presented by the Brewers Association from October 10-12, GABF represents the largest collection of U.S. beer ever served in a public tasting event, alongside one of the most prestigious beer competitions and judging panels in the world. Since the first GABF in 1982, the event has synchronously evolved with the American brewing community. In 1982, the GABF played host to 800 attendees, sampling 40 beers from 22 breweries. Comparatively, in 2013, 49,000 attendees will be offered over 3,100 beers from 624 breweries in the festival hall. Additionally, 210 judges will assess

The Alaskan Sampler 12 Pack

“Bringing together brewers and beer lovers of all shapes and sizes, the Great American Beer Festival is a wonderful representation of just how far the U.S. brewing community has come,” said Nancy Johnson, event director, Brewers Association. “As the demand for festival tickets has grown, the number of breweries interested in participating has likewise skyrocketed. We worked diligently to ensure that breweries who wanted to participate could do so in some capacity. America’s brewing landscape will truly be displayed in the festival hall.” Inside the tasting hall, this year’s GABF also pays homage to the growing trend of brewpubs and craft beer and food pairings with the expanded Brewpub and Farm to Table Pavilions. Of today’s roughly 2,500 breweries, 1,100 are brewpubs. This year’s Brewpub Pavilion features 36 breweries, chosen by lottery, representing all regions of the country—a 50 percent increase from the 24 breweries showcased in 2012. The Thursday and Friday night Farm to Table Pavilion reprises its place at GABF, offering attendees an opportunity to experience topnotch craft beer and food pairings designed and prepared by chefs from around the country. Tickets for the GABF sold out in a record 20 minutes during the public ticket sale.

MACK NEWTON ON… The Curious Effects of Habits Have you ever heard of the legend of the “Touchstone”? According to the legend, the touchstone was a small pebble that could turn any common metal into pure gold. As the legend had it, the touchstone was on the shores of the Black Sea lying among thousands of other pebbles which looked exactly like it. But, here’s the secret…the real touchstone would feel warm, while the ordinary stones were cold to the touch. Well…after hearing the legend, a man sold his few belongings, bought some supplies and camped on the seashore and began testing stones. He knew that if he picked up ordinary stones and threw them down again because they were cold, he could end up picking up the same pebbles over and over again. So, he came up with an idea…pick up a pebble and if it were cold, throw it into the sea. That way he would not end up repeating picking up the same pebbles over and over. Well, he spent a day doing this without finding the touchstone…then a week…then a month…then a year…then three years…NO TOUCHSTONE! Still, he continues on… pick up a stone, it’s cold, throw it into the sea. Pick up a stone, it’s cold, throw it into the sea. On and on he continued until one morning he picked up a pebble and it was warm…he threw it into the sea. Oh, no! It was a habit by now…you know, picking up pebbles and then throwing them into the sea. This was his habit, so when the one

It can be the same way for us…habits of thought, habits of behavior…that seem to have dominant control over us. We do things…we feel things…we think things, out of pure habit, not because we want to do, feel or think that way. Changing habits that no longer serve you or are inconsistent with the person that you want to be is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do, and one of the most important to the quality of your life….particularly to the quality of your relationships. Your habits can be major obstacles to your becoming the kind of person you want to be in your heart. Habits that shape your thinking, feeling, talking and behaving are often roadblocks that stand between where you are today and where you want to go. Habits that no longer serve you kind of keep you ‘running in place’. Habits are only good as long as they serve you, as long as their effect is to continually enrich and improve your life. Success and failure are largely the result of habit. In other words, the ways in which you automatically respond to what’s going on around you. It isn’t always easy to change our habits, but it is very possible. We are never truly stuck with them. Old, negative or unproductive habits may appear tenacious, but they are not invincible. Always think positively about yourself and your situation and about your ability to change yourself. Mental discipline in this area is key and the rewards are great. Remember…all habits, good and bad are all formed the same way. Our job…yours and mine is to form good habits and make them our masters or we will remain slaves to bad ones. -Mack Newton Mack Newton is an 8th Degree Black Belt, Senior Master Instructor, Global Tae Kwon-Do Federation International and Chairman of the World Technical Committee

Food and Wine Lovers Rejoice Weekend Jetaway is Here! By Alison Bailin Batz On Friday, Oct. 11, the Scottsdale Airport will transform from a bustling transportation hub to the hottest party this town has ever seen as it hosts the Second Weekend Jetaway Culinary Casino Classic. Set within one of the airport’s own private jet hangars, Weekend Jetaway is the brainchild of AXA Advisors Southwest and partners as both a way to bring its own staff together on a volunteer effort and raise funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale and the Pat Tillman Foundation. The evening will be filled of gourmet food and drink, live music, surprise entertainers and dice-style games that will culminate with four lucky guests winning a luxurious twonight, three-day, round-trip vacation to Las Vegas on their very private jet. Here is a sneak peek for all food and wine-loving party-goers.

Executive ChefRaymond Suto of The Greene House: Warm brie made with roasted garlic, marcona almonds and sour cherries, paired with their custom Napa Valley Sangria. Executive Chef Taylor Domet of North Italian Farmhouse at Kierland: Braised beef short ribs, butternut squash chutney and tobacco onions paired with AperolShandy, which offers a crisp flavor from the Peroni and some sweetness from the Dimmi, an Italian aperitif. Executive Chef Marc Lupino of Dominick’s Steakhouse: Filet Mignon, Braised pork belly with caramelized onions, Dominick’s famous au gratin potatoes and a surprise dessert. Executive Pastry Chef Lance Whipple of Proof, an American Canteen at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North: I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream…sandwiches. Their clever take on the American favorite is going to blow guests’ minds. Executive Chef Stephen Stromberg of Sapporo Scottsdale: Expect a little sushi, a little sample from their new fall menu, just launched in September. Chef Kevin Janeski of Tom’s Thumb Bistro at Tom’s Thumb Marketplace: Pulled pork tacos served with a choice of barbecue sauce, cotija cheese and cabbage slaw accompanied by their famous mac and cheese. Executive Chef Deb Schneider of SOL Mexican Cocina: Spicy tequila shrimp ceviche topped with a fresh, creamy avocado sauce.

Executive Chef Christopher Nicosia of Sassi Scottsdale: Tuna crudo, spiced lamb meatballs and their house-made cannoli. Of course, all good Italian food must be paired with good Italian wine. They’ve chosen to pair their small bites with a 2011 CentamuraChianto from Badia a Coltibuono in Tuscany.

Thanks to the sponsors of the event, including Southern Wine & Spirits, Hensley, Stella Artois, Peñasco Tequila, Wild Turkey and Skyy Vodka, those wanting a little more than a sip will be treated to a decadent spread of beer, cocktail and wine offerings. Tickets for Weekend Jetaway start at $100 per person and are inclusive of all food and drink pairing, full bar, casino games and other live entertainment. Please visit WeekendJetaway.org.

By Alison Bailin Batz This October, it is easier to support local breast cancer patients and survivors than ever before—simply eat and drink pink! Arizona Institute for Breast Health (AIBH), a 100-percent, local non-profit organization focused on giving women options before decisions when it comes to their breast cancer treatment, is pleased to partner with several local venues across the Valley (and can still partner with more–hint! hint!) to help raise both funds and awareness of their program. Simply visit any of the venues below to support the cause all month long.

The Herb Box During the month of October, both the Herb Box at DC Ranch and at Southbridge will be donating 10 percent of the sales from select food and drink items to the AIBH. Available on the lunch menu, the Market Sunflower Salad features blackened chicken, romaine, frisee, goat cheese, bacon, dried strawberries and blueberries, sunflower seeds and balsamic vinaigrette. Created especially for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Gigi sparkling pink cocktail is a mix of Belvedere Pink Grapefruit, X-RATED Fusion Liqueur

Steakhouse. “At Dominick’s we love to give back and breast cancer has personally touched each of our lives. We are hoping to raise a lot of money for this cause.”

The Vig Throughout the month of October, The Vig’s Arcadia, Uptown and Fillmore locations will donate $1 from every glass of Girl Go Lightly brand wine sold–and $3 for every bottle! In addition, they will also be hosting in-house promotions throughout the month with their top servers and their partners at Alliance Beverage who will be stepping up to donate a portion of their proceeds from sales at each location to AIBH.

Taggia at Firesky Throughout the month of October, Taggia at Kimpton Firesky will be offering a specialty pink drink, with $1 from each sale being donated back to AIBH.

SOL Cocina SOL may be best known for its fresh and modern interpretation of Baja cuisine, but for the month of October, the popular Scottsdale Quarter restaurant wants to be known as the place supporting women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. This cause is very near and dear to many of the hearts at SOL, so they wanted a way to raise money for women suffering from breast cancer and keep it right here in the Valley, so… the “Ta-Ta Tini” was created! This delicious drink is made up of 100-percent blue agave tequila infused for two days with fresh watermelon and Hibiscus flowers. All proceeds from this drink will be donated to AIBH throughout the month of October. DOMINICK’S For the entire month of October, guests who dine at Dominick’s Steakhouse at the Scottsdale Quarter will be seeing pink, literally. Servers and staff at the popular Manhattan style restaurant will be wearing pink ties for the entire month of October and offering 100 percent of the proceeds from its “Pink Drink,” a tantalizing raspberry pomegranate martini with a scoop of Limoncello sorbet, to AIBH. “The Arizona Institute of Breast Health is doing amazing things for women who are battling breast cancer,” said Michael Mastro, owner of Dominick’s

Olive + Ivy Enjoy Olive + Ivy’s Sour Cherry Paloma, which is made up of Don Julio Blanco, Veev Acai, Grapefruit Juice and Cherry Bitters, all month long. A portion of all sales will be donated to AIBH.

La Bocca urban pizzeria + wine bar For the entire month of October, La Bocca is offering a special menu of three Pink Drinks. A dollar of each sold will be donated directly to The Wellness Community Arizona, to help raise awareness of cancer and cancer prevention. Cosmopolitan: The classic pink cocktail. Made with vodka, triple sec, fresh lime juice and cranberry juice with a lime wheel garnish. 1749 Rosé Spritzer: This refreshingly light beverage is made with 1749 Rosé wine, club soda and smartly garnished with a lime wedge. Pink Press: This contemporary twist on the classic “vodka press” is concocted with vodka, club soda, Sprite and cranberry juice with a sassy lemon wedge garnish. And, since one can only drink so much (we think), here are additional ways to support the cause: The Pink Light District The 7th annual Pink Light District fundraiser is in full swing! AIBH is pleased to offer this unique initiative, which provides a way to honor all those touched by breast cancer. From now through October 31, you have the opportunity to express your love, appreciation and gratitude by sponsoring pink light bulbs, which will be placed on the Marshall Way Bridge in downtown Scottsdale, in honor or memory of a loved one touched by breast cancer. It is a wonderful tribute and unique way to honor those you love. Each light is just a $25 donation right at AIBH.org. Chico’s Shopping Day for the Cause On Saturday, Oct. 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Chico’s outlet stores in

Arizona Mills Outlet Mall in Tempe and Westgate Tanger Outlet Mall in Glendale will open their doors to the public in order to support AIBH and breast cancer awareness. On this day, these two stores will donate 10 percent of proceeds from all items sold to AIBH. Studio C Beauty Lounge Throughout the month of October, Studio C is “Thinking Pink” to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Studio C is very passionate about the breast cancer cause, so they will be donating a percentage of all hair product sold in the month of October to AIBH. Studio C will also be accepting donations from customers who wish to do their part as well to support breast cancer awareness. No amount is too small, as every donation goes directly to women who are facing a breast cancer diagnosis. Beaux Tie Designs This locally owned on-line jewelry and pink ribbon gifts retailer, donates 15 percent of the total of every sale through their website to AIBH in the name of the purchaser. They offer a line of unique hand-designed Pink Ribbon Awareness pins, unique Pink Ribbon Gifts and a line of awareness apparel. Beaux Tie Designs also sell sterling silver earrings, bracelets and pendants of all types for both women and children, and even have a variety of Asian silk ties for men!

The color Pink does not actually exist in the universe, it is basically white light without the green color. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale This October, Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North is focused on raising funds for AIBH in several ways. Talavera restaurant and Onyx Bar & Lounge will feature a signature “Jalisco Heat” cocktail, which combines strawberry and jalapeno-infused tequila, fresh lime juice and agave nectar. Onyx also will feature rosé champagne and wine specials by the glass throughout the month, as well as a featured appetizer to match. Talavera will highlight a four-course rosé tasting dinner on Friday, Oct. 25, for a cost of $85 per person. Proof, an American Canteen, will feature Gotham Project rosé wine on draft as well. The Spa will feature the “Pretty in Pink” body treatment, inclusive of a pink grapefruit body polish. Guests also will receive a complimentary pink or black tank top with a Four Seasons logo. Ten percent of all proceeds from each of these offerings will be donated back to AIBH. For more information, please call (480) 860-4200.

and bubbly, served in a pink grapefruit sugar-rimmed champagne flute. Also, throughout the month of October, the pastry case at The Herb Box Market at Southbridge will transform into a sweets showcase of all things pink, including such items as Pink Champagne Cupcakes, Pink Raspberry Dossants, Pink Ribbon Cake Pops, Strawberry Poptarts and more. Ten percent of the sales from all pink pastry items will benefit the AIBH.

shape the Old Town Entertainment District to this day.

With Martini Ranch closing its doors, the infamous “club within a club”, The Shaker Room, will be coming to an end as well. Created in 2000 as an intimate, upscale lounge, The Shaker Room was the first of its kind in this city and spawned a host of similar venues that flooded the market in the mid2000’s. The two venues have hosted the longest running Sunday night promotion in Scottsdale catering to Industry people and VIP’s throughout the years with great bands, flashing lights, energetic go-go dancers and sounds from the most popular and well known DJs to up and coming local DJs.

Before we say good-bye, we wish to extend our gratitude to our amazing patrons. Without your passion and energy, this amazing run would not have been possible. We thank each and every one of you for helping make Martini Ranch what it is today. It has been a marvelous experience and a great pleasure to have been a part of your lives. We hope that you will join us to help make it an unforgettable last two weeks for Martini Ranch and send us off with one last great party.

Martini Ranch has always been a huge supporter of fundraising and has contributed to numerous local, regional and national charitable organizations over the years. Martini Ranch also created some of the first block parties on the streets of Scottsdale, celebrating holidays such as St. Patty’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Halloween and New Year’s Eve that have led directly to the large events still going on in the city today. Indeed, The Ranch was at the cusp of many of the innovative night life elements that
