NIGHTFALL HAS BEGUN alyptic themes to uproarious comedy to family-friendly magic. Kindred of the Dust: Nightfall’s biggest and best-yet live show! A clan of renegades in a post-apocalyptic desert environment controls the only known water supply, which does not sit well with the thirsty hoards outside of the “elite” circle. This headlining show features spectacular Hollywood-style stunts, pyrotechnics and horrifying effects. Nightfall, Arizona’s biggest and best-value Halloween attraction returns to Old Tucson for its 23rd year each Thursday thru Sunday, until October 31st. Nightfall has been rated in the top ten US Halloween attractions by Haunt World magazine for four years running. With terrifying attractions, live shows, and gruesome characters - it’s not just a Haunted House, it’s a Whole Town Gone Mad! This Prison’s Got Talent: Hobart Gainey, the serial killer better known as “Pappy” has plenty of time to kill during his unfortunate incarceration in the Maricopa County Prison. In this comedic show, Pappy and his gang of misfits has devised a new method for relieving the boredom of prison life…. Magic of the Macabre: Experience the impossible through this spellbinding performance of magic and illusion. John Shryock and Mari Lynn masterfully incorporate skillful magic and grand illusion with drama, dance, and comedy to create a mystical world of laughter, wonder, and amazement. John and

Haunted Attractions: Haunted attractions span colorful folk legends to medieval superstition to gruesome roaming characters. Terror Square: Here, in the heart of Nightfall, unsettling encounters of horror lurk around every corner. Murder and mayhem reign as renegade freaks and the walking dead are on the loose, claiming victims with no remorse. Towering above, the Gargoyles turn up from time to time to torture innocent passers-by with words. Beware, you may be next. Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead): Since the time of the Aztecs, it has been believed that the spirits of the dearly departed return to Earth one day a year for a happy reunion. Join them for the Day of the Dead. The Curse of the Blood Witch: The line between good and evil blurs when villagers turn to brutality to root out evil witches in their midst. Sin begets sin and good becomes evil. This is the Curse of the Blood Witch.

emma rigby stars in “Once Upon a time in Wonderland,” premiering thursday on aBC.

As author George R. R. Martin observed, “The greatest fools are oftentimes more clever than the men who laugh at them.” To believe in something, to stand for something, can make a man look like a fool to skeptics and sophisticates, but that doesn’t worry Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, creators of the hit ABC fairy-tale drama “Once Upon a Time” and now its spinoff, “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland,” premiering Thursday, Oct. 10. In a dark time, Kitsis and Horowitz have staked their claim in the light. “When we started to do ‘Once,’ ” he says, “(we learned that) everything that’s cool in the world is something you have to s... on. It’s a lot cooler to say you hate something than to say you’re for something. Everything was bleak and dark. Adam and I wanted to write a show that gave us the feeling we did when Charlie got the keys to the factory at the end of ‘Willy Wonka.’

8

“The Internet has really allowed people to get a lot more attention for hating something than to be for it. Our shows are for believers. We want to be hopeful.” That doesn’t mean that the former college buddies’ shows are sentimental mush. “We still get dark,” says Kitsis, “but we provide light at the end of the tunnel. And we’re not ashamed of that.” In “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland,” Kitsis and Horowitz have once more put together a colorful tossed salad with ingredients from different stories. Obviously there are references to Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” but there are also elements from “The Arabian Nights” by way of Disney’s animated film “Aladdin.”

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Gravity’ Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play a medical engineer and an astronaut who work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space. (PG-13 - 90 minutes) Stan: Director/co-writer Alfonso Cuarón and his production team deliver an on-screen magnificent environment that literally transports us into space as we see and feel the vastness of the universe as the realization encompasses us that space is truly the unknown frontier. Joseph: “Gravity” is a must-see masterpiece that has got an awful lot of weight to it, packing a potent punch with a motivational message, astonishing special effects and a series of events that can only be survived by holding one’s breath.

‘+1’

‘Blue Caprice’

Rhys Wakefield, Logan Miller and Suzanne Dengel play college friends who go to the biggest party of the year, where mysterious phenomenon disrupts the night, quickly descending into a chaos that challenges their friendships - and their ability to stay alive. (NR 95 minutes) Joseph: If you attempt to think about it too much, “+1” can quickly bring about a big headache. However, if you forget about trying to figure out what is happening and simply succumb to the existential experience, you are likely to be entertained.

Tequan Richmond plays an abandoned boy who is lured to America and drawn into the shadow of a dangerous father figure (Isaiah Washington). Inspired by the real life events that led to the 2002 Beltway sniper attacks. (R - 93 minutes) Joseph: “Blue Caprice” cruises along at a near crawl to a grand finale that, unfortunately, is neither exciting nor insightful. We merely observe obscurity as the new drama tries too hard to avoid anything that could be considered controversial.

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (1991) has the exact same final dance scene as in ‘Sleeping Beauty’(1959).

ABOUT THE FILM

“I have always been fascinated with looking at oddball characters. When I met Keir and saw what a great actor he was and saw that he had this darker side to him, I thought that it

would be cool to put him in a part where we could explore the life of a hitman who is 17 or 18 years old and trying to grow up, go through growing pains and balance that with killing people.” - Torre Catalano, Writer/Director “I am usually just on the other side of the fence, waiting for a job to kind of fall into my lap. But with this one I got to help along and give my ideas while we were on set and not have them be ignored. And then my husband is such a wonderful writer. He wrote a great little story that I

think that we all just latched onto and wanted to have a part in telling.” Martha MacIsaac, Actress/Producer “This is the first time that I am fully producing a project of this size. It is a whirlwind. It is really euphoric to see all of these people come together to try and make these words come alive. Just the thought that everyone came together to do this and it is all coming together is heavenly - but also nerve-racking.” - Devon Bostick, Producer

mission – and he accepted it – was to redefine the role of Impossible Missions Force chief Jim Phelps, which he did quite credibly.

“Runaway Train” (1985): A ferocious Voight remains committed to his portrayal of a morally questionable convict on the run, even when his actions would appear to ensure his own doom.

“Deliverance” (1972): Another modern classic, this saw Voight score again as one of the rafting buddies who ran into big backwoods trouble.

JOSEPH J. AIRDO

In “Seasick Sailor,” Keir Gilchrist plays a teenager who spends his days stocking shelves at the local drugstore - that is, when he is not killing people for a boss that he has never met. He struggles to balance the growing responsibilities of this unorthodox job while establishing a real connection with someone else like an adjusted young adult.

Wildflower is celebrating its 15th anniversary this month and is the original Fox restaurant. The Caridad team enjoyed an exceptional dinner there and it was easy to see how the restaurant has gained such a loyal following in Tucson. One thing that is special about arriving at a Fox restaurant is that there is always someone waiting to open the front door and greet you with a big smile. Wildflower is no exception to this. We sat in a comfortable booth on the edge of the dining room that gave you a great view into the action of the open kitchen. Our server Craig was all smiles and his cheery and attentive attitude really made the evening. We were treated to the Chef’s boards and Steamed Black Mussels with Chorizo to start. This was followed by Spanish Paella, Spicy Asian Shrimp over egg noodles and Lamb Ravioli with herb tomato butter. Each if the dishes were well balanced with flavors and textures that left you scraping that last little bit off the plate. It was clear that much time and attention had been committed to really developing food that shined. With all that said, the best was yet to come.

If you have ever eaten at Wildflower you know that you should never skip dessert. We tried a little of everything

with the highlights being the Pineapple Upside Down, Brioche Doughnuts and Butterscotch pudding. After this meal, we left with no doubt that Wildflower would be celebrating many more anniversaries. The Caridad Culinary Training Program at Caridad Community Kitchen teaches students the culinary arts while providing over 1000 hot evening meals and sack lunches each day to low income individuals and families at 8 meal sites. For more information, please contact Caridad at 845 N. Main Ave, Tucson, AZ 85705, (520) 882-5641. www.caridadtucson.org
