Take a Stroll with Niccole: Seven Falls - Sabino Canyon the Catalina Mountains melts away and washes down to the pools that flow like a soft fountain in the arid Sonoran landscape. In the winter the hike is enjoyable with cool breezes and in the summer monsoon the water is cool to dip into after a long intermediate trek. Every time we go, I stay at the pools for a while and marvel at their beauty. The whole trip takes around five hours depending on how fast you hike,

Winter is one of the best times to visit the desert without the exhausting heat and relentless direct sun especially for all of the lower hikes around town. Seven Falls in Sabino Canyon recreation area is by far one of the best and most memorable hikes in the lower mountains. The winter snow from

If you are truly feeling fit you can go off the beaten path and hike up to the top pools, cliff climbing on very slim rocks is involved for this feat. I recommend this trek to anyone who has yet to experience the Seven pools of Tucson Arizona. The cacti and wildlife are abundant and the views are remarkable. Don’t forget the sunscreen for this hike and leave the dogs at home. ANNUAL SOUTHWEST INDIAN ART FAIR February 22 & 23 Arizona State Museum’s Southwest Indian Art Fair (SWIAF) is February 22 and 23, held outdoors on the museum’s expansive front lawn, just inside the University of Arizona’s Main Gate at Park Ave and University Blvd in Tucson. SWIAF is the museum’s largest cultural celebration and its signature educational event—a high point of Tucson’s winter cultural heritage offerings.

Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance (SAACA) presents an engaging performance for both experienced and novice opera fans during The Opera Project on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 1431 W. Magee Road. The venue is known for the superior sight lines and acoustics with elegant ambiance. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born of a well-to-do, middle-class family on May 7, 1840. At age 6, he could read French and German, writing verses in French at age 7. While taking piano lessons, the music stuck in his mind. Everresounding, he cried, “This music! Take it away! It’s here in my head and won’t let me sleep.” And, the world has taken his music. His last three symphonies, his three

ballets, his piano and violin concertos, his “Romeo and Juliet Overture” and two of his operas, “Eugene Onegin and Queen of Spades,” are played all over the world. The featured operas - Pushkin-based stories with Tchaikovsky’s intense musical offerings - are exciting subjects for The Opera Project, with narration by Vivian Weede who sang the role of Tatyana in the Seattle Opera production of “Eugene Onegin.” Vocal excerpts by dedicated artists recreating beautiful works in the original language will feature Soprano Vanessa Salaz, Tenor Umberto Borboa and Baritone Alejandro Banuelos. They have made opera and concert appearances in South America, Mexico and music centers of the U.S.

“Eugene Onegin” Composing opera occupied a good part of Tchaikovsky’s career. When he found a libretto with a heroine with whom he could empathize, the composition of gorgeous music followed. Tatyana’s letter scene, perhaps one of the most famous in all of Russian opera, has been referred to as “some of the most nakedly expressive music Tchaikovsky ever wrote.” At the end of the opera, there is the final and desperate confrontation between Tatyana and Onegin. He, who had previously spurned the younger Tatyana, is sent packing. The curtain falls to quiet memories and deep remorse as audiences hear a glimmer of the Fate theme, and Tatyana bids farewell forever to the love of her life.

BALLET TUCSON WINTER/ SPRING PROGRAMS WINTER CONCERT (in collaboration with Tucson Desert Song Festival) Carmen, choreography by Daniel Precup Daphnis and Chloe, choreography by Mark Schneider Danses à la Française, choreography by Chieko Imada Saturday, February 15 – 7:30 pm Sunday, February 16 – 1:00 pm & 5:00 pm Temple of Music and Art Tickets: $36-42; Groups: $30; available at www.brownpapertickets.com (800.838.3006) Ballet Tucson continues its collaboration with other major arts organizations in the 2nd Annual Tucson Desert Song Festival. This year’s French theme is captured in the Ballet Tucson program, which will include George Bizet’s Carmen, with vocals by mezzo-soprano Janara Kellerman, and two premiers: Maurice Revel’s lush pastoral “poéme choréoraphique” Daphnis and Chloé and Dances a la Francaise to contemporary French music with live vocals by area artist Don Sheppard.

“The Queen of Spades” It is the tale of one of the most destructive of addictions, finally leading to isolation and ruin. This drama of the corrosive effect of Herman’s gambling obsession and the need to discover the secret which will bring him untold riches contains some of Tchaikovsky’s most radical music and is “ranked as one of the greatest of 19th century operas.” Herman is finally unable to escape the inevitability of Fate, losing his sanity and life as the victim of his own greed, and sacrificing love in its pursuit.

FUNDRAISER: BOOTS & BALLET Boots and Ballet at the Stardance Event Center on Sunday, March 23, will include roping demonstrations, linedancing, and great music by the Bill Ganz Western Band. Highlights include a silent auction of art and other unique items along with an energetic live auction of one-of-a-kind “lunchboxes,”

ABOUT THE FILM

‘Big Bad Wolves’

‘Gimme Shelter’

A series of brutal murders puts the lives of three men on a collision course: The father of the latest victim now out for revenge, a vigilante police detective operating outside the boundaries of law, and the main suspect in the killings - a religious studies teacher arrested and released due to a police blunder. (NR - 110 minutes)

Vanessa Hudgens plays a pregnant teenager whose journey plummets her into a perilous struggle until finding salvation in a suburban shelter for homeless teens where she is finally able to break the shackles of her past and embrace the future with clarity, maturity and hope not only for herself but her unborn child. (PG-13 - 100 minutes)

Joseph: Once upon a time there were a couple of filmmakers named Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado who turned the horror genre on its head with a movie called “Rabies.” While their new crime thriller “Big Bad Wolves” is not nearly as revolutionary, their sick-and-twisted sense of humor and sincerely shocking end-game revelations keep viewers interested and engaged from start to finish. You have probably heard this story before, but never with this much knack for tone and torture.

Joseph: “Gimme Shelter” has got some strong Christian undertones, boasts a very valuable message and features many emotional moments that feel forced and a little heavy-handed. Even star Vanessa Hudgens’ performance is a bit too amplified. Yet, as the motion picture progresses, the emotions become increasingly more natural and the story’s uplifting elements shine through - as do revelatory performances from Ann Dowd, Brendan Fraser and Rosario Dawson.

The ‘Space Jam’(1996) soundtrack went sextuple platinum, and the movie grossed over $230 million.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

‘American Hustle’ ~ One of the best pictures of 2013 features an intriguing and inventive plot and a cast of actors that shine in their roles. Grade: A

‘Devil’s Due’ ~ Not nearly as bad as it could have been. A few creepy moments, garnering a few chills, but enough with the found footage already. Grade: C

‘Her’ ~ Spike Jonze does a great job in creating the mood for a not-so-distant future L.A. Joachim Phoenix overcomes the stigma of his last project. Grade: B-

“I would like this film to carry the mantle of us as a society reviewing where we are at today and how we have been sort of classifying things up until this point. The first is family and that in today’s world the definition of family is quite different than what it was even 5 years or 10 years ago. Family sort of looked like Brendan Fraser’s [character’s] family - the American dream and the opportunity of just getting it all and having it perfect. But the world is not perfect. “The truth is that most people don’t have that and are made to feel like outcasts. But even friends are your family. And you are not an outcast; you are just as good as everybody else. I think that more and more people are starting to understand that. We are all each other’s family. We need each other’s support. I am hoping that people who see this film will recognize these things as well as that there is always hope - especially if you have a selfless person caring about you. As long

as you have somebody - anybody, even just a friend - there is a chance.”– Ronald Krauss (Writer/ Director of “Gimme Shelter”) “[After the screening of the film in Phoenix], a young man came up to me crying. He kept saying, ‘That was me.’ I hugged him and kept burying him in my shoulder because I felt that this young man needed so much love and so much attention. It made me realize that when people watch this movie ... they might get sideswiped like this young man. And our culture has to pick up people who need help. It made me think of the fact that we don’t look at each other much face-to-face anymore. We are so involved in the wonderful electronics that we have but we need that love, that sense of dignity and that sense that somebody cares about the fact that we are wounded.’”– Kathy DiFiore (President of Several Sources Shelters)

‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ ~ The cinematography and fantastic production design transport you to the early 60’s. The memorable original music draws you in. Grade: A

‘Lone Survivor’ ~ Celebrates the heroes & those that risk & lose their lives every day to keep us safe. Best war film since ‘Saving Private Ryan.’” Grade: A-

‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’ ~ Laughs, thrills, chills & an inventive take on a franchise that does not seem to wear out its welcome, despite numerous sequels. Grade: B+ ‘Saving Mr. Banks’ ~ Fine performances & a glimpse into the mind of a writer known for creating one of the most recognizable stories of the 20th century. Grade: A

‘The Nut Job’ ~ Unique plot filled w/ cute characters, humor & action. The animation is near perfect giving the major studios a run for their money. Grade: B

nderwear models, superstar musicians, actors, Donnie producers, ex-cons – what in the world do Wahlberg the Wahlbergs have left to prove? How about opening some hamburger joints in their hometown? One of Boston’s best-known families has taken to making delicious meat patties, and you can watch every tantalizing moment if you tune in to “Wahlburgers,” premiering Wednesday, Jan. 22, on A&E Network. That’s right, “Wahlburgers.” The unscripted series gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look into the restaurant business as brothers Mark and Donnie Wahlberg return to Beantown and join forces with their older brother, Paul, in the new venture. “It’ll be called Wahlburgers, just like the burgers,” said Donnie when he announced the new series on “Arsenio.” “(People) called us that as kids, they’d tease me, they’d say ‘Wahlburger’ – if they weren’t calling me ‘Junior Jailbird,’ because of my older brothers being inmates all the time. ... We got the last laugh and opened a burger joint with the name.”
