The Greatest Show On Grass RETURNS TO TPC SCOTTSDALE

The Greatest Show on Grass, a.k.a. the Waste Management Phoenix Open, returns to TPC Scottsdale January 27 through February 2, 2014. 2013 Tournament Champion Phil Mickelson is back to defend his title after an exciting week where an incredible 20 tournament records were either tied or broken. Mickelson broke four records himself and tied eight others, including joining Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler and Mark Calcavecchia as three-time tournament champions. Mickelson’s remarkable 28-under par total also helped the field break the lowest scoring average record three times during the week – round 1 (69.015), round 4 (68.527) and the overall cumulative scoring average of (68.954). It all started during round one when Mickelson narrowly missed carding the sixth 59 in PGA TOUR history when he lipped out his birdie putt on his 18th hole to shoot 60 – the lowest opening round in tournament history. It wasn’t all because of Phil, though. Thanks to the tremendous support from the local community, inaddition to Mickelson’s record-setting performance, the tournament also set attendance records during Friday’s 2nd round (121,901) and Saturday’s 3rd round (179,022). Mickelson will look to continue his great play AZ Weekly 10x1 ad_. 1/15/14 2:21 PM Page 1 from the 2013 season where he was one of only a

handful of players with multiple wins including a major – the 2013 Open Championship. At the 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open, look for Mickelson to defend his title against several the PGA TOUR stars such as Brandt Snedeker, Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson and many others as they battle it out for their share of the $6.2M purse. On February 2, 2014 a new champion will raise the Waste Management Phoenix Open trophy, but he won’t be only winner of the event. The true winners each and every year at the Waste Management Phoenix Open are the local economy and the hundreds of Arizona charities the tournament supports. The Waste Management Phoenix Open annually pumps more than $220 million into Arizona’s economy according to a 2012 economic impact study conducted by Arizona State University W.P. Carey School of Business. Economic impact in sports can be defined as the net change in an economy resulting from a sporting event. The impact comes from visitors’ spending, organizational spending, employment opportunities and tax revenue. For example, fans attending from out-of-town spent millions of dollars for lodging, food, entertainment and other types of goods and services during their stays in Arizona. Let’s also not forget the expenditures by The Thunderbirds, the PGA TOUR and other organizations required to stage the event which generated a demand for millions of dollars worth of various goods

and services. Best yet, is the fact that the most recent economic impact report of more than $220 million represents a 23 percent increase from a similar study performed in 2007; a trend tournament officials hope will continue. While the local economy gets a significant boost as a result of the tournament so do hundreds of local Arizona charities. Last year, the Waste Management Phoenix Open and its hosts, The Thunderbirds, distributed more than $6.2 million to local charities through proceeds raised from the 2013 event. Charities such as Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Homeward Bound, Special Olympics of Arizona, The First Tee of Phoenix and so on are just a few of the charities that have benefited over the years. While last year’s donation was a staggering number it’s only a small portion of the overall charitable contributions the tournament has made in its 79-year history. Since its inception dating back to 1932, the event has raised more than $85 million for charity with more than $60 million coming since October 2003 when the tournament first brought on a title sponsor. The event only happens one week a year, but the impact lasts a lifetime for the organizations it supports. “Raising tens of millions of dollars for Arizona charities has been a tremendous benefit of hosting a professional golf tournament,” said Tom King, a member of The Thunderbirds and the 2014 tournament chairman of the Waste Management

Phoenix Open. “The community’s support of our nearly 80-year-old golf tournament is staggering. It is such an honor to be a part of something so worthwhile.” So, what’s new at the 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open? Security. Beginning January 1, 2014 the PGA TOUR will implement a host of new security measures that will be in effect during the 2014 tournament. Much of the TOUR’s new security policy will be implemented behind the scenes and will have virtually no impact on your experience as a spectator with the exception of a few key changes. But, if you’ve been to an NFL game recently you’re already in the know as the PGA TOUR has adopted many of their same policies. As you begin to plan for the 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open please note that metal detecting wands will be used at each entrance gate on everyone including volunteers, spectators, staff and media; bag inspections will also be performed at all entrance gates (opaque bags are not to exceed 6”x6”x6” with clear tote bags not to exceed 12”x6”x12”); and no outside food or beverages may enter the tournament except for sealed bottled water and medical or infant needs. The tournament will also feature Tweet-toScreen capabilities on several of the digital scoreboards positioned throughout the course. It’s here where fans can interact with the tournament via twitter and follow their dialogue live on site encouraging other fans to participate as well. Spectators will notice an increased amount of skyboxes on both the famous 16th hole and elsewhere on property. The 16th hole, for example, will now have a total of 197 skyboxes an increase of 20 skyboxes from the 2013 event. And speaking of hospitality, for AZ Weekly 10x1 ad_. 1/15/14 2:21 PM Page 1 the second year, tournament officials are planning a

special venue for active and retired military personnel and their families affectionately called, The Patriots Outpost. Located just off the 18th fairway, The Patriots Outpost includes hosted food and beverages for the men and women (and their families) who selflessly protect our country. And, when the sun sets at TPC Scottsdale the party heats up at the Coors Light Birds Nest. Open Wednesday through Saturday from 3:30-10 p.m. of tournament week, the Coors Light Birds Nest features new artists every year and this year’s acts are some of the best yet. Crowd favorite O.A.R. will kick off the party on Wednesday night, Country star Jake Owen, who recently released a new album, DAYS OF GOLD, will play on Thursday night, Weezer will have the crowd singing on Friday night and MetalHead will play on Saturday, the final night. While the music each night may be different, one thing still remains the same – The Coors Light Birds Nest is THE PLACE TO BE in Scottsdale during the Waste Management Phoenix Open! While the actual Waste Management Phoenix Open golf tournament will be played Thursday – Sunday (January 30-February 2), there will still be plenty of things to see and do at TPC Scottsdale all week long. Many of the PGA TOUR pros will play morning practice rounds on Monday and Tuesday of tournament week. There are also other special activities that will feature PGA TOUR professionals, including the Kyocera Pro-Am on Monday, the R.S. Hoyt Jr. Family Foundation Dream Day and CBS Outdoor Special Olympics Open on Tuesday and the ever-popular Annexus Pro-Am (formerly the Silver Pro-Am) on Wednesday. On Saturday, February 1, the tournament is inviting everyone to participate in the

fourth annual GREEN OUT. Waste Management and The Thunderbirds encourage players and tournament attendees to wear green in support of the many green/sustainability initiatives that the company is doing to make the event not only the greenest tournament on the PGA TOUR, but one of the most charitable. For every person who wears green on Saturday, tournament host, The Thunderbirds, will donate “green” to three charities including Arizona Recycling Coalition, The Arizona Chapter of Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) and Waste Not. Based on an online voting contest held on the tournament’s Facebook page from November through early January, one charity will receive 50 percent of the funds, another will receive 35 percent and the third will receive 15 percent. In fact, in the three years since taking over as title sponsor, Waste Management has quickly turned the “Greatest Show on Grass” into the “Greenest Show on Grass” by incorporating a tournament-wide recycling and waste reduction program. Now in year three, Waste Management’s Zero Waste Challenge is aimed at controlling the materials brought into the event and educating vendors and patrons about the proper disposal of materials, so that eventually zero waste is sent to local landfills. During the program’s second year, the 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open successfully diverted 100 percent of waste from local landfills – a feat that hasn’t been duplicated at any major sporting event. January 27 through February 2 is the week and The Greatest and Greenest Show on Grass is the place to be. For more information or tickets to the 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open, visit www.wmphoenixopen.com.

‘Summer in February’

‘Raze’

‘The Past’ An Iranian man deserts his French wife and two children to return to his homeland. Meanwhile, his wife starts up a new relationship - a reality her husband confronts upon his wife’s request for a divorce. (PG-13 - 130 minutes) Stan: Presenting the dynamics of relationships, and the reasons from both perspectives when reunited to finally end it with an official divorce, ‘The Past’ rises above the cultural setting of France and the nationalities of the couple involved, for an engaging thought provoking view of family, children, and, expectations. Randy: One of the most engaging, dramatic and well-acted films of the year. Definitely worth all of the critical accolades. Surprising is the omission by the Academy for a Best Foreign Language picture nomination. An intriguing drama with enough twists to keep you actively engaged and the French setting for an Iranian film is even more intriguing. A must see.

Zoe Bell plays a young woman who is abducted by an elite, secret society and wakes to find herself in the company of 50 other women who are, just like her, forced to fight for their lives in an unimaginable hell. (NR - 87 minutes) Joseph: Do you get a kick out of watching white-tank-top-clad women beat each other to death? Well, keep your eyes peeled for an email from me with the name and number of a hopefully helpful therapist. In the meantime, the new film “Raze” will add more fuel to your frankly very disturbing fire. Although the final 15 minutes are riveting and rewarding, the rest is revolting - devoid of any redeeming value whatsoever (unless, of course, you equate exploitation with entertainment).

Stan: With the theme of a true story at the core, and the traditional triangle love story as the theme progresses, as we the viewer perceives early on that it can only end badly based on our own life experiences, ‘Summer in February’ becomes that all important lesson to firmly establish our own moral convictions, and, adhere to them, at all cost.

Written & directed by Peter Berg and based on the book by Marcus Luttrell, the lone Navy Seal survivor and Patrick Robinson, star’s Mark Wahlberg as the lone surviving member in a team of Navy SEALS who are tasked with the mission to capture or kill notorious Taliban leader Ahmad Shahd. Also starring Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Eric Bana. (R - 120 minutes) As a Vietnam veteran, these types of films are a hard watch, bringing back memories that a constant effort to suppress is sometimes ongoing. ‘Lone Survivor’ under the sure hand of director Peter Berg, presents the attributes of gorilla warfare with an ‘up close and personal’, realistic edge delivering the full impact of the emotional effects of an extremely hostile series of events. Admittedly, it wasn’t the visuals that made it tough viewing, rather the sounds in the film that awakened those memories of over 45 years ago…

Will Ferrell’s Top Movies

“Everything Must Go” (2010): A seriocomic Ferrell

fares well as a man who takes up residence on his lawn when his whole life goes awry. “Step Brothers” (2008): You may find this interminable if you’re not a Ferrell fan – but if you are, all facets of his humor are brought into play as he’s matched with John C. Reilly as men who act like kids when they become related.

“Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004): Ferrell is hilarious as the stereotype of the self-promoting

local television newsman. Matched to the title part, Ferrell not only can be amusing, but he’s also sweet as a North Pole-raised fellow seeking his real father.

Follow me on Twitter: @Tinodefranco Any restaurant that makes me feel as if I’m either in Oz or reading snippets out of a fairytale, I’m going to be pleased. Now, add in great food, and I’m as sold as a vintage Shelby Mustang at the Barrett Jackson auction. T.C. Eggington’s is just that. A great family eatery in Mesa, AZ, with a sense of humor. Now, if you’re looking for a trendy, cool, swank eatery, this is not the place. But, then again, we’re eating breakfast and lunch, so who needs to be seen anyway? Actually, what you will notice is the antithesis of cool when you get a glimpse of the uniforms the wait staff wears, consisting of long, knee length, khaki shorts and polo shirts for both men and women. The restaurant itself is standard, nothing out of the ordinary or of note. What will catch your attention first, though, is the menu with chicken wire inside the plastic cover. Once open, and perusing the delicious items inside, you’ll also (hopefully) take the time to read the captions of the cartoon “Eggington” family. T.C. says, “A day without eggs is just like any other day, but without eggs.” And, Bob Eggington looks like Tweedle Dee from Alice and Wonderland—so there’s that. Scrutinize the menu thoroughly, as there are a ton of fun word choices that will get any language lover in a tizzy. And, on to the edibles…

I bet you thought I was never going to discuss the food, huh? Well, it’s a good thing you kept reading! There lunch is great, don’t get me wrong, but their breakfast is something wars could be fought over, so I suggest getting that early worm. There’s Cinnamon Bread French Toast… um, yes. The English Harvest Skillet comes with potatoes, vegetables, melted cheese and poached eggs, and is enough to feed one large appetite, or maybe two normal sized ones. Or, if you’d like to venture off the beaten path, there’s the Crab Stuffed Pastry, which comes stuffed with artichoke hearts and crab meat, then topped with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Delicious. They also offer an array of espresso coffees and alcoholic drinks for those in need to rid their hangover or numb their senses in order to ignore unwanted visiting houseguests. If you do decide to go against my thoughtful advice and order lunch, you won’t be unhappy (until you see how delicious the breakfast looks on the plate next to yours). T.C. offers an array of scratch made soups, salads and sandwiches. And, regardless of what you order, make sure you have something to spread the apple cinnamon jam onto. You won’t be disappointed. You can go to www.tcegg.com for more information, or just show up at 1660 South Alma School Road, Mesa, Arizona 85210 between 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily.

Ashley Broad turns up the heat on ‘Hardcore Pawn’

DINE! SECTION - Sponsored by LocalDines.com

T.C. Eggington’s: Good food and a sense of humor

Ashley Broad of truTV’s “Hardcore Pawn,” airing Tuesdays, remains calm as her brother and father grow emotional. People often walk into American Jewelry & Loan, the Detroit pawnshop her family owns, with unrealistic expectations, such as mistaking cubic zirconia for diamonds, and end up leaving no richer than when they entered. As viewers of the show, now in its eighth season, have Ashley learned, Broad loves to cook, and she buys kitchenware for Broad the store. Even mundane cooking items, however, are not immune to the strangeness that can enter a pawnshop’s door. “People bring in cooking things sometimes,” she says. “In one particular episode, someone brought in a rotisserie oven – and brought it in with a raw chicken. Unfortunately, the food and health department would not allow us to take it.” She does, though, buy pots, pans and cookware – when they are devoid of poultry.

Stephen King’s horror tale had been remade before — for TV in 2002 — but this 2013 version adds very contemporary themes to the story of the telekinetic teenager, played here by Chloe Grace Moretz, who makes others regret being so mean to her. As usual, things reach their peak at a school prom no attendee ever will forget ... provided he or she survives it. Director Kimberly Peirce (“Boys Don’t Cry”) also casts Julianne Moore as Carrie’s possessive mother.

TIME TO TRY SOMETHING NEW Simple tips to obtain your weight loss goals in the New Year By Scott Keppel

1.

Is this going to be another year of making the New Year’s Resolution of losing weight? Maybe this year it’s to get to the gym more often or just “be healthier.” No matter what your resolution is, the following tip can make it a little more exciting and less cumbersome. It’s simple: try a different style of exercising/working out each week for the next 8-12 weeks. Not sure if yoga is your thing? Maybe lifting weights will get your results. Or maybe CrossFit is what resonates with you. You won’t know unless you try. Most gyms, studios, and/or workout facilities offer a trial period. Some may have a minimal cost, but several are free and this can be a great way to find out where you belong. Below are some of the most popular exercise trends and the types of facilities that may offer them.

Resistance training: Typically you can go to a gym and do resistance training yourself, or you can hire a personal trainer and go to a personal training studio. Either way, resistance training is performed using dumbbells, barbells, bands, machines, etc. All offer great benefits, but much like anything all have limitations. Deciding whether or not to lift heavy and less reps, light and more reps, full body, upper body, and so on may be overwhelming so you should consult with a professional before starting to ensure you get the most out of your resistance training. No matter what form of resistance training you choose, you can build lean muscle mass, burn fat/calories, shape your physique and improve both posture and body awareness. 2. Yoga: Yoga studios, as well as personal training studios and big box gyms, offer a variety

of types of yoga. You can try Vinyasa flow, Bikram, or deep stretch to name a few. Yoga is a great way to increase flexibility, postural awareness, and muscle strength and burn calories, while learning proper breathing techniques and ways to deal with stress more efficiently. 3. CrossFit: CrossFit studios are the ideal place to pursue this form of working out. These workouts will help you burn fat while building strength and muscle endurance. While not a requirement, many individuals who enjoy this style of exercise prefer to work several muscles at once while working in a competitive group setting. 4. Bootcamp, total body pump, group classes: These types of workouts are often offered in a group setting of 10 or more and are a cost effective way for you to have an instructor push you beyond your comfort zone. Most “big box gyms,” personal training studios and even parks will offer a variety of group classes. Classes are a great way to meet like-minded people while building muscular endurance and burning fat. 5. Pilates: This exercise is a

good way to build flexibility, strength and muscle endurance. Individuals will often go to a pilates studio, but several big box gyms and some personal training studios will offer forms of pilates as well. No matter what exercise you try or prefer, your goal should be to exercise consistently while eating a balanced diet. Only through diet and exercise can you achieve your optimal health. We are all different, so what works for one may not work for another and how often one works out will vary, so find what works for you and a get after it. No accident: Curry has Warriors headed for playoffs

The play was called a “backboard alleyoop,” and it was the on-the-fly creation of one Stephen Curry, the stellar point guard of the Golden State Warriors. In a Jan. 5 game against the Washington Wizards, a driving Curry, his path to the basket blocked, shoveled an underhand lob off the backboard and into the waiting right hand of teammate Andrew Bogut, who slammed it home to finish off a highlight-reel play that drew “oohs” and “aahs” from the hostile capital city crowd. The only problem: It was probably an accident. It certainly was a surprise to Bogut, who admitted after the game, “I didn’t know what was going on.” His look of disbelief at his hand immediately after the play certainly didn’t betray that. As for Curry, all he would say was, “We’ve never done that before, so it was nice that it worked out.” Things have worked out well so far this season for Curry and the Warriors, who recorded their ninth straight win with that victory in D.C. At this writing, the Warriors were in second place in the Pacific Division, just behind the Los Angeles Clippers, and fifth in the Western Conference.

* A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to merely drive the dragster’s supercharger.

* With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle.

* If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.

* At the stoichiometric 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitro methane the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F.

BEER AND WEIGHT with calories from other foods. For example, if you’d like a drink, pass on that bag of potato chips or other treat (but don’t sacrifice healthy choices such as fruits and vegetables in favor of more booze, which is low in nutrients).

first, ahead of calories obtained from other foods. But that doesn’t mean you can drink more! Calories consumed in excess, no matter what the source, will be stored as fat. If your intake is too high and/or you’re not expending enough energy through physical activity, you’re sure to pile on the pounds.

I always find it interesting to see how people who are not actively involved in the beer world view the beverage. Here are a couple of interesting finds from the internet. Written by Megan Gressor and Nick Devito, they both have some interesting information…. except for the whole light beer thing

5 Ways to Beat that Beer Belly Want to whittle that waistline? You can enjoy a drink and still shed those excess pounds. Just follow our easy tips. It’s not called a beer belly for nothing: Alcohol is a common culprit behind abdominal fat. Abdominal fat can be dangerous, increasing your risk for weight-related problems ranging from cardiovascular disease to high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea and some types of cancer. The bigger your waist measurement, the higher the risk, and a measurement of 40 inches or more usually means it’s time to do something about it. If you drink a lot of beer — or any alcohol — cutting back on that habit is a good place to start.

Men are especially at risk for abdominal weight gain — and not just because they may drink more beer. In nutrition-speak, males are typically “apple-shaped,” meaning fat tends to concentrate around their waists. Women tend to be “pears,” with more fat around their hips and thighs. The good news for “apples” is that upperbody fat usually gets burned before the more stubborn lower-body fat of “pears” (which is meant to see women through pregnancy). And you don’t have to be a teetotaler to bust that gut. You can enjoy alcohol in moderation and still drop the excess. It helps to follow our gut-be-gone rules:

Blame the Beer? Since alcohol is toxic to the liver, the body eliminates it as quickly as possible and burns those calories off

Choose light beer over the full-strength brew: It’s lower in calories. To slow your beer consumption, quench your thirst first with water, then alternate beer with nonalcoholic beverages, preferably low-calorie ones like seltzer. Feel like a nice cold beer? Why not go for a walk and then have it? Not only does walking or jogging one mile burn the calories in an average drink, but keeping active has many other health benefits as well. So get moving!

While moderate drinking has documented potential benefits, particularly on cardiovascular health, overindulgence is dangerous. Men generally shouldn’t drink more than one or two drinks per day; a “drink” is usually defined as an ounce of alcohol, equivalent to that found in a 12-ounce bottle of beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits. (It’s a good idea to talk with your physician for advice about your own use of alcohol.)

The Moderation Strategy

Approximately half of U.S. males are overweight, with one in four trying to lose weight at any given time, according to American Medical Association figures. Many give up early because they fear they will have to go hungry and/or give up booze while on a diet. But the key to weight loss is eating smarter, not starving yourself or giving up everything you enjoy. So have the occasional beer, if you like. Moderation is the key! And if you want to make your own…

Smart Snacking Alcohol stimulates the appetite. And the majority of calories consumed at parties isn’t necessarily from the alcohol as much as from the highfat snacks that usually come with it. Instead of nuts, cheese, corn chips or potato chips, try:

Crunchy vegetable crudités such as carrots, bell peppers, celery and zucchini. Swap creamy dips for salsa or bean dip.

Pretzels.

Popcorn (but skip the butter).

Toasted pita bread.

The key to creating slimming suds at home It’s one of the saddest realities of mankind: Beer is full of empty calories. Sure, it might give you courage or make your the ballgame more interesting, but too much of it can also make you fat. You could turn to the slew of lowcalorie beers that have been hitting the shelves lately, like Miller64, which, at 64 calories per bottle, has about half the calorie-count of a regular bottle of suds.

Trade calories from alcohol

“You can’t get more organic or local than home-brewing.”

Bottles and caps

But why not join your fellow countrymen and get on board the growing home-brewing bandwagon? Not only is it cheaper to brew your own beer — at about $40 for the ingredients to create a 5-gallon batch of beer — but it allows you to control what you put in your body. “You can recreate anything that’s made in a store,” advises Gary Glass, director of the American Homebrewers Association. Brewing your own dry stout, for example, is an excellent way to get your brewski on for significantly fewer calories than, say, a traditional bottle of Bud. And how’s this for a silver lining? There’s no fat in beer. “The calories are all from the alcohol, says Glass, whose organization is based in Boulder, Colorado. “To reduce the amount of calories in your beer, cut back on the amount of grains” in your home brew, Glass says. Want to be like the estimated 750,000 other homebrewers in America and create your own batch of hooch? It’s easy. Here’s how:

Home-Brewed Beer Ingredients

A brewpot

A fermenter

Instructions Once you’ve got your equipment and ingredient list, you’re ready to start brewing. Here’s the general gist: 1.

Boil malt extract with some hops for about an hour.

2. Put that into a fermenter with cold water and chill. 3. Add yeast and let ferment for two to three weeks. 4. Pour into bottles, cap them and voilà! Of course, the catch here is that using fewer grains means less alcohol content. The end result is what aficionados like Glass would call a “lower gravity” beer. That essentially means “more watery” to laymen. But there are ways to infuse more flavor to offset that watery taste. Glass suggests turning to more flavorful malts like black patent malt, brown malts, chocolate malts, or anything that’s been roasted to “give your beer a burnt-coffee flavor,” he says. Again, the fewer grains you use in your home brew, the lower the beer’s alcohol content will be. So if you’re looking to get “happy,” you run the risk of drinking twice as much of your lower-calorie beer than you would regular beer. That puts you back to Continued On Page 52...
