Friday, October 4th at Rialto Theatre Imagine a New Orleans street band playing Indian Bollywood tunes with a go-go beat—you can’t? Then read on, because your day is about to get better. Red Baraat is the only bhangra brass band in North America. Hailing from New York City and formed in 2008, the group uses its improvisational sound to blend the dhol, a double-sided, barrelshaped North Indian drum, with brass funk. Conceived by Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound—a merging of harddriving North Indian bhangra rhythms with elements of jazz, go-go, brass funk and hip-hop. REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE

‘Rush’

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl play two 1970 Formula One racecar drivers - James Hunt and Niki Lauda - who push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. (R - 123 minutes) Joseph: You will inevitably be sucked into the path of “Rush’s” exhilarating action and life-affirming drama with a cosmically constructive concept that a wise man gets more use from his enemies than a fool from his friends.

‘Don Jon’ Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a New Jersey guy who, dedicated to his family, friends and church, develops unrealistic expectations from watching pornography and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love. Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore also star. (R - 90 minutes) Stan: A gallant directorial debut with a finely chiseled character, ‘Don Jon’ briskly moves along from the personification of a lost soul’s search, and the discovery of companionship as the ultimate path to happiness and intimacy. Joseph: “Don Jon” is sweet, charming and endearing without ever losing its cool edge as it culminates with an admirable and naturally absorbed message about the euphoria that can be experienced when one loses their self in another person.

‘Metallica: Through the Never’ (IMAX-3D)

BET, YOU

Trip (Dane DeHaan), a young roadie for Metallica, is sent on an urgent mission during the band’s show. But what seems like a simple assignment turns into a surreal adventure. (R-94 minutes) Randy: Having never really been a fan of Metallica, I was hesitant going into this strange mix of concert footage/movie concept. I left becoming a fan and loving the unique approach the filmmakers took in creating not only one of the most creative films of the year, but the best in terms of cinematography and the best use of 3D technology. Rock on!

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson The character of Harry Potter’s birthday is officially listed as July 31st.

Martin FreeMan’s

top Movies

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” (2012): Freeman assumed the role of Bilbo Baggins in this start of another J.R.R. Tolkien-based fantasy-movie trilogy.

“The Pirates! Band of Misfits” (2012): Being featured as a character named The Pirate With a Scarf makes Freeman difficult to miss. “Wild Target” (2009): It’s really Bill Nighy and Emily Blunt’s show, as a hit man and his would-be victim, but Freeman’s presence adds enjoyably.

“Hot Fuzz” (2007): In one of his collaborations with writer and co-star Simon Pegg, Freeman plays a police sergeant dealing with a “Lethal Weapon”-ish detective duo (Pegg, Nick Frost).

COLUMNISTS

“I wasn’t raised religiously but I grew up in a very religious community, so I always felt a natural sense of being at odds with them - not with them as individuals but just with the belief systems and what was expected of me. I was also dealing with my sexuality. This was a story that handled my two greatest angsts and made it really funny but also kept it dark and left it accessible. And the story had just stayed with me over the years.”

In “C.O.G.,” Jonathan Groff plays a cocky young man who travels to Oregon to work at an apple farm. Out of his element, everyone who crosses his path picks his lifestyle and notions apart.

“There is strength in humility. That is the broadest idea that the movie has. Learning self-awareness. Learning to see when you have made mistakes and when you have acted wrong, and realizing that in trying to move on from it. I think that is what the character is trying to do in the second half of the film. I just hope that it evokes questions of that and

also questions of where your spiritual beliefs and the way that you act as a human being intersect. Without ever saying that, I wanted there to be a clear message of this movie, I just thought that intersection would be an interesting setting for a film. “It took about 3 and a half years to get the film made ... so I learned a lot about being thrifty with a budget and making a film that I think still looks really impressive quality-wise. I also learned a lot about trying to stay tenacious and not take ‘no’ for an answer. I think that more than 250 producers or financiers passed on making this film before we finally found the right fit. So it was really just an effort of working hard at it and staying persistent to see it through the right way.” - Kyle Patrick Alvarez

Lars Ulrich, Charlotte Huggins, James Hetfield(‘Metallica Through the Never’) By Randy Montgomery “After 30 years in the business, the most important thing for us is always making sure that our work remains as varied as possible. We had been interested in the idea of another movie for a while, but we felt we had already explored the documentary format in “Some Kind of Monster”. We wanted something that felt fresh and different.” “This has been way above and beyond anything this band has ever dealt with before. It’s exciting; it’s intimidating and sometimes a little bewildering. It can seem like a wild beast running rampant, but in order to be the best at what we do, we have to throw ourselves out there and be vulnerable. Pushing ourselves past what we know well is, to me, the

Metallica way.”– Lars Ulrich (Drums, Writer, Executive Producer) “I was interested in this because it is a unique narrative format. Trip, played by Dane DeHaan, is a runner for the band who goes out into the city. The events that happen in the arena affect events in the city, which affects the performance. Also, Metallica created a stage show expressly for purposes of filming and I believe it may be the first time that’s ever happened in a featurelength movie.” – Charlotte Huggins (Producer)

that broadens the fan base and takes us to another realm. We’re all adventurists, so we’re not happy if we are not going forward. It’s an expensive gamble, but it’s a chance to make this experience live on forever.” – James Hetfield (Vocals, Guitar, Writer, Executive Producer)

“I think we’ve done something really special. Who else is doing anything like this? Hopefully this will reveal another dimension to Metallica

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With more than 22 years of experience in media production, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. Blair Underwood of “Ironside” on NBC “I never used to admit to watching reality TV – because of what it does to us as actors – but ‘Naked and Afraid,’ you kind of can’t turn away from it. Zinburger is known for its great food and hospitality and that is exactly what we experienced when three of us went out for dinner on a Tuesday night. We were greeted at the door with a warm welcome and shown right to our table. The atmosphere has a fun retro-modern feel that made you feel like the whole dinner was going to be a good time. Our server Wylie was quick to come over, say hello and bring drinks. She was friendly and attentive the entire evening. Between the three of us, we had the Boy Blue Burger, Turkey Burger and a Zinbuger. They were the perfect pair to the homemade onion rings, truffle fries and zucchini fries. And of course, who could resist a tall, frosty mint chocolate chip shake to go along with that? We were blown away by the flavor and quality of the food. The Boy Blue Burger had just the right amount of blue cheese on it so it complimented the beef instead of overpowering it. The Zinbuger with manchego cheese and zinfandel braised onions was rich and delicious without being heavy. The Turkey Burger

was flavorful and juicy and was topped with a perfectly ripe avocado. After all that, we found room to share a huge slice of chocolate cream pie, which left us stuffed and happy.

It was another wonderful night out for the students of Caridad Community Kitchen that left us looking forward to the next trip back.
