Arizona Theatre Company Announces Electrifying 2013-2014 Season of Hit Plays, Classics and Comedy

8

As the preeminent professional theatre in the state, Arizona Theatre Company (ATC) announces its 47th season with the production of six electrifying plays for 2013-2014, with performances in Tucson and Phoenix. David Ira Goldstein, ATC’s Artistic Director, announced the season that will include the Arizona premieres of three of Broadway’s newest smash hits, a delightful long-running Broadway musical comedy and will revisit two cherished classic stories in vibrant new productions. The season kicks off with Oscar Wilde’s beloved comedy, “The Importance of Being Earnest,” the first time in 25 years that ATC has produced this classic favorite. “The Mountaintop” is the powerful Broadway play about the final night of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life. The outrageous, high-energy Broadway musical hit, “Xanadu” is on the season, along with the madcap antics that ensue in “Around the World in 80 Days.” “Venus in Fur” is the sexy, cat and mouse hit of Broadway last season. Rounding out the season will be the Arizona premiere of “Other Desert Cities,” the multi-awardwinning Broadway smash about one family in a neighboring desert city’s struggle dealing with a surprising and troublesome history. “Our mission at ATC is to bring together a cross-section of Arizona’s

communities to be entertained, provoked and astonished by wonderful artists telling stories in the most thrilling ways possible,” said Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein in announcing the 2013-2014 season. “Our hope is always to create dialogue with our audiences about the diverse work we do. For our new season, we were able to secure the rights to produce some of the hottest, most provocative and most entertaining new plays and musicals direct from Broadway as well as the perfect artists to help us create new looks at classic stories. It is a season that finds towering, engaging characters in extraordinary circumstances. Next year will find some of our favorite artists returning, but also an array of new voices, directors, actors and designers pointing us towards a future that has all of us here at ATC deeply engaged and full of wondrous expectation.” For more information about Arizona Theatre Company and the 20132014 Season, call the ATC box office in Tucson or Phoenix. All Tucson performances take place at the Temple of Music and Art in downtown Tucson (330 S. Scott Avenue); call (520) 622-2823. REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Behind-the-Scenes’ ‘The Family’ By Stan Robinson In this action/comedy/thriller directed by Luc Besson with a screenplay by Luc Besson & Michael Caleo, the Manzoni family (Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dianna Agron, and John D’Leo), a notorious mafia clan, is relocated to Normandy, France under the witness protection program, where despite the best efforts of CIA Agent Stansfield (Tommy Lee Jones) to keep them in line, fitting in soon becomes challenging as their old habits die hard. Relativity Media release (R-110 minutes

‘The Short Game’

‘A Single Shot’

Filmmaker Josh Greenbaum follows the lives of eight of the best 7-year old golfers in the world as they train for and compete in the World Championships of Junior Golf. (PG 90 minutes)

Sam Rockwell plays a hunter who accidentally shoots a young woman, watches her die and discovers a box of money near her body. He hides her body and takes the cash but when he discovers that the money belonged to a group of hardened criminals, the hunter becomes the hunted. (R - 116 minutes)

Stan: Demonstrating the love of a sport at any age, ‘The Short Game’ tugs at your heart as the fervor of the young golfers lights up the screen with lessons on following one’s dreams, whether in or outside of sports. It’s the real ingredient for success for the very young and old alike!

Stan: As the story unfolds and the aftermath of the initial act, the slow and methodic pacing as it moves to the conclusion, is a stark reminder of ‘which side of that proverbial moral fence’ of what’s right and wrong that we as individuals live by, which dictates our own actions… Joseph: After a masterful first 15 minutes, “A Single Shot” becomes a convoluted game of cat-andmouse and loses a little of its vigor. Fortunately, it still remains a solid-ifslow-burning story about the search for the only redemption that truly matters - from oneself.

Forest Whitaker’s

top Movies “The Last King of Scotland” (2006): Whitaker

took every film honor in sight, including an Academy Award, for his riveting portrayal of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.

“Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai” (1999): Under the direction of indie-film favorite Jim

Jarmusch, Whitaker is great as a professional killer who operates under his own strict code. “The Crying Game” (1992): As a British soldier captured by the IRA, Whitaker is pivotal to the big surprise in director Neil Jordan’s drama. “Platoon” (1986): Whitaker has his moments as a soldier in the superb actor ensemble gathered by director Oliver Stone.

By Joseph J. Airdo of as one of the greatest actors of his generation. The characters that he has portrayed in ‘Moon,’ ‘The Assassination of Jesse James,’ ‘Confessions of a Dangerous Mind’ and so many other films combined with all of his comedy work, he is a guy who shows such muscular range as an actor.

“Before I met [Sam Rockwell], he was someone whose work I absolutely revered and someone who I thought

“When you see that, you go, ‘This is someone who can do anything. This is someone who you can just watch and watch and watch.’ It’s those kinds of performers you have to employ to tell stories and to be the central focus of stories like this one, where it is resting completely on their shoulders. We are with this guy John Moon from beginning to end. He is almost in every frame of the movie. So it has got to be someone who

compels us, draws us in on several levels and has a deep inner life. “My intention for telling this story was never to moralize in any way, but I think that this is a story about redemption. He redeems himself by overcoming something very personal - and not in a public way. He does that redemption to nature and to God. When he goes back into the woods at the end and what he does, it is not like he is going to the public or to the cops. The peace that he needs to make is peace with his maker and peace with nature. The guy is very connected to nature. So I guess that there is something in there about redemption as it relates to the natural world.” - David M. Rosenthal

It was truly amazing to chat with these 7 year olds as they talked about golf, practicing, and having a camera follow them for the shooting of the documentary ‘The Short Game’. They seemed so wise beyond their years and so excited about the game they love so dearly! – Stan Robinson “I’m not really sure what got me into golf, I tried it along with some other sports and one day I decided that I liked it a lot and that was it! Some of the things I learned when I first started playing is that you’ve got to keep your cool, and you can’t get upset. “I would want to pass on to any of the kids who want to try different things, try the things that you want to and follow their dreams because if that’s what you want to do, they should go for it. “Actually it wasn’t very scary to have

JOSEPH J. AIRDO

By Joseph J. Airdo the cameras on me to make the movie, I played better actually with the cameras on me. One reason is that I’ve never met a camera I don’t like (with a young child’s giggle!). “It takes a lot of practice, I practice every day of the week and it sickens me to take a break, I try to practice sometimes 5 to 6 hours a day!” – Alexa Pano “I’ve tried a few sports, I’ve tried horseback riding, golf, and tennis, and when I narrowed it down to the longest career and golf was it, I really love it! I put in a lot of work and golfing really turned out great. “The competition is one of the reasons I play golf, the competition is the best thing about golf I’ve ever tried! The primary lesson I’ve learned from golf professionally is etiquette, the etiquette for golf, and the etiquette for the world, the etiquette for everything. When you follow your

etiquette, and do everything that you’re supposed to, when you try your very hardest, you’ll be one of the greatest! “I would say to any kids out there to follow your dream, do what you want to do, and do it good, practice it, love it, and never give up! “The camera didn’t make a big difference when they made the movie, it was actually really, really fun. I pretended like they were trees and it actually made me putt better and I had fun with them around!”– Allan Kournikova

Zinburger is known for its great food and hospitality and that is exactly what we experienced when three of us went out for dinner on a Tuesday night. We were greeted at the door with a warm welcome and shown right to our table. The atmosphere has a fun retro-modern feel that made you feel like the whole dinner was going to be a good time. Our server Wylie was quick to come over, say hello and bring drinks. She was friendly and attentive the entire evening. Between the three of us, we had the Boy Blue Burger, Turkey Burger and a Zinbuger. They were the perfect pair to the homemade onion rings, truffle fries and zucchini fries. And of course, who could resist a tall, frosty mint chocolate chip shake to go along with that? We were blown away by the flavor and quality of the food. The Boy Blue Burger had just the right amount of blue cheese on it so it complimented the beef instead of overpowering it. The Zinbuger with manchego cheese and zinfandel braised onions was rich and delicious without being heavy. The Turkey Burger

was flavorful and juicy and was topped with a perfectly ripe avocado. After all that, we found room to share a huge slice of chocolate cream pie, which left us stuffed and happy.

It was another wonderful night out for the students of Caridad Community Kitchen that left us looking forward to the next trip back. The Caridad Culinary Training Program at Caridad Community Kitchen teaches students the culinary arts while providing over 1000 hot evening meals and sack lunches each day to low income individuals and families at 8 meal sites.
