PEPPER WITH RDGLDGRN Tuesday, September 3rd / Rialto Theatre Although Pepper’s members are originally from Kona, HI, the trio doesn’t play traditional Hawaiian music. Rather, Pepper’s music is a melodic and accessible blend of alternative pop/ rock, punk, and reggae. Formed in 1996, Pepper is hardly the only alternarock combo that has been inspired by Jamaican sounds. But while other punk-minded alternative pop/rockers who emerged in the ‘90s were greatly influenced by either classic ‘60s ska or hardcore dancehall artists like Stitchie, Ninjaman, and Bounty Killer, Pepper usually gets more inspiration from ‘70s and early-’80s reggae, Pepper’s sound could be described as the Police meets Steel Pulse meets punk-pop. It isn’t hard to see the parallels between a Pepper song like “The Good Thing” and Police hits such as “Roxanne” and “Don’t Stand So Close to Me,” but while Sting and his colleagues sounded polished, Pepper tends to favor a rawer, more rugged approach. PIMA AIR & SPACE MUSEUM, DAVID-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE AND THE 309TH AMARG OFFER THE FIRST EVER SATURDAY “BONEYARD” GUIDED TOUR FOR “WORKING” TUCSONANS! one hour before the start of the tour. The Air Force prohibits the carrying of firearms, weapons, illegal substances, backpacks, camera cases, and other non-essential items on the AMARG tour. Carry-on items may include a small camera without the case, and a small purse or fanny/belt pack.

Pima Air & Space Museum, who operates the often-sold-out docent-guided bus tours of the “Boneyard”/309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group/309 AMARG on the DavisMonthan Air Force Base, announced the first ever Saturday tours for Sat., Aug. 31st created specifically to show support for working Tucsonans. The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group or 309 AMARG, commonly referred to as the “Boneyard,” operates to sustain U.S. and allied warfighters. Instituted in April 1946, immediately after WW II, AMARG has grown to become the storage, regeneration and “recycling” center for all U.S. military branches’ aircraft, federal agencies including NASA. The group, located on the DavisMonthan Air Force Base, currently has more than 4,000 airplanes on a 2,600-acre (or 4-square-mile) facility. Five elements make up their overall mission; those elements include: o aircraft reactivation (also called “regeneration”) – meaning returning aircraft to flying status. o aircraft overhaul – or limited depot-level maintenance, o aircraft storage, perhaps the most visible mission, o aircraft parts reclamation, and o aircraft disposal.

Having a closer “inside-the-fence”

view of the vast array (for comparison, more planes in one location than exist on the entire continent of Australia) has always been in high demand. In 1999 D-M in conjunction with AMARG awarded operation of tours to the Pima Air & Space Museum. These tours run during normal business hours: Monday through Friday, not including Federal Holidays. However, normal business hours are when many Tucsonans work. Thanks to the coordination of DavisMonthan Air Force Base, AMARG and the museum, with volunteer airmen manning the security gates, on “Labor Saturday” –the Saturday of the Labor Day Weekend–Pima Air & Space Museum is offering docentguided air-conditioned-bus tours of the “Boneyard.” Prices will be: special savings ($5) for Pima County residents (Aug. 31 only), $7 for non-Pima-County adults, $4 children 12 & under (the tour is not recommended for children age 7 & under). Admission to Pima Air & Space Museum, recently reduced to only $12.25 for Pima County residents, is not required however telephone reservations are (call 520 574-0462), in addition to the regular security procedures for entering a U.S. Air Force Base: government-issued photo identification (such as a driver’s license, military ID or passport) is required for all persons 16 years of age and older. Check in a minimum of

All items will be visually inspected before boarding the bus. The bus will stop for photo ops on base however everyone will remain on the bus and all photos taken through the windows. The tours, to be offered at 10am, 11:30am, 1:30pm and 3pm, take approximately 90 minutes. Walk-up tickets will be available on a very limited basis beginning when the museum opens at 9am. This event was designed to thank the local Tucson community for their support and for embracing the “Boneyard” as a local icon for more

than 67 years. It is hoped that this outreach opens the door for many hard-working neighbors to take advantage of a rare opportunity to view the broad range of aircraft and items of interest the Aerospace Regeneration and Maintenance Group workforce maintains, and experience firsthand this nation’s past and present airpower display. “We are delighted to offer this frequently-requested tour on a Saturday,” stated Yvonne Morris, Executive Director of the Arizona Aerospace Foundation that operates the Pima Air & Space Museum, “and truly appreciate the extra effort to make this community-event happen by everyone at Davis-Monthan, 309 AMARG, the airmen, our staff and volunteers.”

The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures in Tucson, Arizona will be celebrating its fourth anniversary with free admission to the museum on Sunday, September 1st between 12:00pm and 4:00pm. The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures opened on September 1, 2009 and is a nonprofit organization, showcasing antique and contemporary miniatures in an educational and magical environment. The Museum gets its name because visitors will be seemingly transported to different lands and times by the stories told by the miniatures in the collection. On September 1st, visitors can tour the galleries on their own or explore with one of several themed gallery guides. Children will enjoy looking for the Museum’s resident fairy, Caitlin, in the Find Fairy Caitlin scavenger hunt. Both of the Museum’s new hands-on Art Carts will be available in the galleries from 12pm until 2pm, and the Museum will be giving away Youth Sun Safety Kits, on a first-come basis, courtesy of TMC for Children. REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Instructions Not Included’ Eugenio Derbez plays a man whose life as Acapulco’s resident playboy comes to a screeching halt when a former fling leaves a baby on his doorstep and takes off without a trace. However, after spending 6 years establishing himself as an unlikely father figure, he finds himself in danger of losing his daughter - and his best friend. (PG-13 100 minutes) Joseph: “Instructions Not Included” is an affectionately heartfelt tale that is tender and touching with an ultimately tragic twist that will tear your emotions in two while simultaneously strengthening your belief that everything happens for a reason.

‘Closed Circuit’

‘The Grandmaster’

Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall play lawyers and ex-lovers who find themselves put at risk after they join the defense team for an international terrorist’s trial. (R - 96 minutes)

‘The Grandmaster’ pans the tumultuous Republican era that followed the fall of China’s last dynasty, a time of chaos, division and war that was also the golden age of Chinese martial arts. It tells the story of martial arts master Ip Man - the man who trained Bruce Lee. (PG-13 - 123 minutes)

Stan: A taunt psychological thriller set in the UK, with an average of one surveillance camera per 14 persons, ‘Closed Circuit’ had this reviewer on the edge of his seat when evidence starts to point to a possible British Secret Service cover up.

Stan: ‘The Grandmaster’, a grand presentation over and above showcasing Chinese martial arts and Ip Man, provides insight on the Second Sino-Japanese War between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan (19371941) delivering a ‘must see’ history lesson.

DIDN T KNOW! Reese’s Pieces was the candy that the boy used to lure the extraterrestrial in ‘E.T. the Extraterrestrial’ (1982).

Sean Connery

“Dr. no” (1962):Had this first screen adventure of Agent 007 not succeeded, there might not have been one of the world’s most enduring movie franchises. Sean Connery’s casino-table debut with the legendary line, “Bond ... James Bond,” remains one of the most indelible introductions in the history of film. “The Spy Who Loved Me” (1977):Easily Roger Moore’s best contribution to the Bond saga, this globetrotting adventure – 007 skiing in the Alps! 007 riding a camel in Egypt! –- has a feel that’s jaunty without going over the edge into camp.

HugH Jackman’s

Top movies “Les Miserables” (2012): Jackman earned an Oscar nomination by putting the force of his singing voice behind Jean Valjean in the Victor Hugo-inspired musical. “Deception” (2008): Jackman gives an enjoyably sly performance as a bon vivant with ulterior motives for drawing a bookish auditor (Ewan McGregor) into his world. “Happy Feet” (2006): A heard-but-not-seen Jackman has – and is – fun as an animated penguin named Memphis. “X-Men” (2000): Jackman zoomed into international stardom with his initial performance as Wolverine in this Marvel Comics adaptation.

Writer/Director/Actor Eugenio Derbez (‘Instructions Not Included’) By Joseph J. Airdo

RANDY MONTGOMERY

during this experience but, at the same thing, it was the best thing that could have happened to me because I had the strength and the courage to write my own movie and finally I have a beautiful film. “Sometimes life comes with surprises, like maybe suddenly being a father or a mother or maybe losing your job or any other kind of issue. And you think that it is the worst thing ever. But maybe later you realize that it was an obstacle you needed to overcome to be a better human being. You have to face life even though it comes with instructions not included.” - Eugenio Derbez

DIDN T KNOW!

“I realized that a film with no heart - even though it is really funny nothing happens with it. I have seen a lot of films that are really funny but with no heart at all. That is just another funny movie. It is very simple and it does not stick to your heart. So I think that to do a memorable film, it is really important to put a lot of emotion into it and make it inspirational. So that is why we worked a lot on the script to do something memorable, like ‘Life

is Beautiful,’ ‘Amélie’ and ‘Cinema Paradiso’ - all of these things with heart and comedy at the same time. “I started writing this film 12 years ago because I was rejected every time I tried to get a job in the film industry. I have always been a TV actor and when I tried to switch to the movies, they would reject me constantly. So I started writing my own film. I think that that was the worst thing that happened to me

To our surprise and delight, we were sat at a large, family-style table and were joined by General Manager Joel Sanchez and Manager in Training James Daly. They had set time aside in their busy night to dine with us so that we could learn more about the Darden restaurant group and share the knowledge with the rest of our class.

We all had entrees off the seasonal menu which did not disappoint. And just when we did not think we could fit another bite, out came the pumpkin cheesecake and tiramisu. It turned out to be no problem cleaning those plates. The entire dinner far exceeded our expectations.
