Villopoto Passes Eight Riders to Claim First Win of 2014 Monster Energy Supercross Season in Phoenix In front of 49,834 fans inside Chase Field, reigning three-time 450SX Class Champion Ryan Villopoto won his first Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, race of the season aboard his Monster Energy Kawasaki. For the second consecutive week, Rockstar Energy Racing’s Jason Anderson used a last-lap pass to post back-to-back victories in the Western Regional 250SX Class Championship. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Jake Moss grabbed the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award to start the 20-lap 450SX Class Main Event, with Toyota/Yamaha/N-Fab/

JGRMX’s Justin Brayton and Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey in tow. Brayton took over the lead after the second corner, bringing Dungey and Barcia with him. Barcia surged towards the front, passing Dungey for second and then setting his sights on the lead. A six-rider battle ensued with Brayton, Dungey, Roczen, Barcia, Villopoto, and Stewart all within just a few seconds of one another. On Lap 7, Barcia and Roczen made contact while battling for third, sending Roczen to the ground.

Villopoto pressured Barcia shortly thereafter and made the pass for third. “Justin was riding a hell of a race,” said Villopoto. “I have to give it to him, he made it tough. I didn’t get the start I wanted because the (starting) gate was slippery, but I just needed to be patient. The Phoenix (track) gets really slick so I had to take my time and make sure my passes stuck.” Brayton’s runner-up effort tied his career-best finish, which came in Toronto in 2012. Dungey finished third, giving him back-to-back podium results. With his win, the 35th of his career, Villopoto moves into the 450SX Class points lead. He holds a one-point advantage over Dungey. MyPlash/Metal Mulisha/Star Racing Yamaha’s Cooper Webb raced to the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award to start the Western Regional 250SX Class Main Event. Seely and Anderson opened a comfortable lead on the field, with Seely extending his advantage over Anderson for most of the 15-lap Main Event. As the leaders approached lappers in the late stages, Anderson reduced his deficit to mere bike lengths. On the final lap, Seely made a slight mistake, which allowed Anderson to challenge for the lead, making the pass with about a half lap remaining. “I was out for redemption tonight,” said Anderson, who failed to qualify for the Main Event in Phoenix the year prior. “I got a good start on my KTM, like I have been all season. I don’t plan on

those last-lap passes, but it was there and I needed to take it. My goal is to keep control of the red number plate (signifying the points leader) so I’ll do whatever it takes to do that. I really want it.” Monster Energy Supercross returns to Anaheim, Calif., and Angel Stadium for the third race of the 2014 season. The race will be the 40th Anniversary Celebration of the championship. 250SX Class Results: Phoenix 1. Jason Anderson, Rio Rancho, N.M., KTM 2. Cole Seely, Lake Elsinore, Calif., Honda 3. In “Philomena,” Steve Coogan plays a world-weary political journalist who picks up the story of a woman’s (Judi Dench) search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent.

ABOUT THE FILM

“What I liked about it is that it is a tragedy and a comedy at the same time. It is a tragedy and, on top of that, there is a romantic comedy or a road movie or a buddy movie or whatever you want to call it. That is what made it so interesting. Philomena’s story is so dreadful and then, on top of that, there is humor and lightness and I thought that those two complemented each other very well. The work was always about balancing those two elements. “I thought that the pairing [of Steve Coogan and Judi Dench] would be very good. In the old days, they used to talk about chemistry between actors and I thought that these two had very good chemistry. [Judi Dench] is constantly the most wonderful woman. She is an incredible woman. She can play joy

in a way that nobody else can. She is fantastic. “Philomena sort of gets a new son [in the film], doesn’t she? It seems to me that we made it with a lot of love and there is a lot of love in the film. And there is a lot of innocence against cynicism - things like that. So I hope that [audiences] have a good time. It taught me that I am not capable of forgiveness in the same way that Philomena is.” - Stephen Frears

By Santino Defranco It’s unfortunate for all of us wouldbe culinary ethnic foods specialists that having access to the same foods and spices won’t always equate to production of the same quality of foods we find in culturally diverse restaurants. I mean, we’ve all tried to make Chinese food, right? And, it certainly doesn’t taste anything remotely close to what we find in even the most rancid Asian eatery. Well, I have never tried to make Middle Eastern cuisine, but I’m pretty sure the same rules apply. That’s why I let the professionals handle the difficult stuff at Haji Baba restaurant and grocery store in Tempe. Yes, I said grocery store. Which means that, in theory, you could purchase every spice and grain of rice and herb, but it doesn’t mean you (or certainly not I) have the authority to try to recreate it. For that reason, the only suggestion I can make to you while perusing the spices and other foods with names I can barely pronounce: keep walking, sit down at one of the tables, and enjoy the best Middle Eastern food in the valley. That’s right, I said it. The BEST! There’s nothing fancy about the ambiance. The tables may very well have been purchased from a high school or an old soup kitchen. The walls are scarcely decorated. Even the menu above the cash register looks like it came out of 1974. But the food!

Oh the food. What Haji Baba lacks in trendy swank, it makes up for with the delicately rubbed meats, and hummus, and salads, and baba ghanoush. If you’re a coffee lover I suggest the Arabic coffee. It’s strong and thick and may very well produce sprouts of hair on your chest (regardless of gender) and will keep you wired for the day or night for whatever reason you need to be awake for. Not a coffee drinker? No problem, start out with one of their freshly squeezed lemonades. Next, get an order of hummus to get you going, but you must, and I repeat MUST, order some of their hand tossed pitas. The difference between their handmade pitas and the standard one is the difference between winning the lottery and having all of your dreams come true, or getting a paper cut—a deep one. The kabob’s are always tip-top, whether you order the standard beef one, the chicken or try the gyros. And, if you love Shawarma, Haji has you covered. Do yourself a favor and trot down to a great Tempe staple, and indulge in a delicious meal that will most likely cost you less than the latte in your hand. You will not be disappointed. But again, don’ try to make it at home folks. You can enjoy Haji Baba at 1513 East Apache Boulevard, Tempe, AZ 85281. Their website is www.haji-baba.com.

Childsplay presents Live Stage Adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat

“Frozen” is a delightful animated musical, a return to form for Disney animation with an intriguing story and terrific songs. What’s especially encouraging about it is how directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee take a classic tale — Anderson’s “The Snow Queen” — and update it, without beating us over the head with references that draw attention to the modernization.

FANS RULE IN 2014 HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS GIVE FANS THE POWER TO DECIDE WHICH RULES WILL IMPACT GAMES IN GLENDALE AND PHOENIX The world famous Harlem Globetrotters will take fan interaction to a new level when the 2014 “Fans Rule” World Tour comes to the Jobing. com Arena in Glendale on Saturday, Feb. 8th at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. and at US Airways Center in Phoenix on Sunday, Feb. 9th at 2:00 p.m. Fans can choose which new gamechanging rules they want to see in their hometown by voting online now at harlemglobetrotters.com/rule. The Globetrotters were the first organization in sports and entertainment to let fans vote on rules when the team introduced the concept last year. Since the fan response was so overwhelming, the team is doing it again – but with a major twist. The 2014 online ballot includes three never-before-seen revolutionary rules: •

Hot Hand Jersey – Both teams will have a “Hot Hand Jersey” they can pass among each other. The player who is wearing this jersey will receive double points on made baskets.

Make or Miss – The quarter begins with only two players on the court for each team. When a team scores, a teammate may enter the game. When they miss, the player missing the shot must leave the court, leaving his or her teammates shorthanded.

Trick Shot Challenge – Via three challenge flags per team, each coach can challenge the other team to make a trick shot. If the team makes the trick shot, they earn five points. If they miss, the other team receives five points.

With a roster showcasing stars such as Special K Daley, Big Easy Lofton, Flight Time Lang, Hi-Lite Bruton and Dizzy Grant – plus female stars TNT Maddox, T-Time Brawner and Sweet J Ekworomadu – the Globetrotters’ one-of-a-kind family show features mesmerizing ball handling, an assortment of trick shots, high-flying dunks and precise timing – all with an array of comedy guaranteed to entertain the young and the young at heart. After virtually every game, Globetrotter stars remain on the court for autographs and photographs with fans. Tickets start at $18.00 and are now available at harlemglobetrotters.com, www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 800-745-3000. For the Glendale game, tickets can also be purchased at the Jobbing Arena box office. For the Phoenix game, tickets can be purchased at the U.S. Airways Center box office. Information on group and scout tickets for either game can be found at harlemglobetrotters.com.

No… we need to EMBRACE it. Imagine that each failure is a signpost along that highway that Keats wrote of and if you follow that sign (not try to avoid or go around it) it will lead you DIRECTLY to your goal. That is the great truth.

Every now and then something really good appears on the TV screen. Several years ago I was watching a sporting event and a commercial came on that struck me as being very important to my thought process at that time. What happened next would change how I viewed failure from that moment forward. The commercial starred Michael Jordan and he was relating how he had lost over 800 games in his career and taken over 25 game-winning shots…and missed. He continued on this theme in order to drive home the point that his success was due in great part to his ability to learn from failure. What a great truth this is. All successful men and women in business, politics, medicine… you name it, all understand this great truth. Failure is the essential element needed for success. It’s through failure that we learn the REAL success lessons. John Keats, the English poet, once wrote, “Failure is, in a sense, the highway to success, in as much as every discovery of what is false leads us to seek earnestly after what is true, and every fresh experience points out some form of error which we shall afterward carefully avoid.” Some will go so far as to say we need to tolerate failure…no, I say we need to embrace failure, understand its role in our eventual successes. You see, to tolerate is to endure, to put up with, so to speak.

Regrettably, Keats was not describing how most deal with adversity and failure. Most do NOT learn from their failures, neither are they quick to become aware of the errors they commit so they are not repeated. To follow the signposts (failure) you must examine the failure, find out what you can learn from it so that you will not repeat the errors and therefore get better. Some people think that if they try and fail, it’s a sign that they’re not supposed to have what they’re going after. The reality is, it’s only an indication that you have more to learn and when you learn it, you’ll be better. Sometimes one of my students will make a mistake and say; “I’m sorry!” I usually reply with my motto: “Don’t be sorry… be better.” By that I mean you’ll get better by keeping your head up and learning from your mistakes and failures. And, as a final point on this subject, keep these three things in mind as you move forward. First, keep your eyes on your aiming point...your target. In other words, know where you want to go. Secondly, get started quickly…always be action oriented. And finally, learn from your mistakes and continue your pursuit of your goal while treating your unavoidable failures as nothing more than opportunities to more intelligently begin anew. -Mack Newton Mack Newton is an 8th Degree Black Belt, Senior Master Instructor, Global Tae Kwon-Do Federation International and Chairman of the World Technical Committee

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

CIDER Julius Caesar immediately embraced this new found beverage. Cider began to really become popular around the time of the Norman Conquest, 1066 AD, when orchards were planted specifically to grow cider apples, farm workers were paid in cider and monasteries were producing a strong, spiced cider which they sold to the public. Who ever thought that there might be Trappist Ciders?

It has been no secret that for the past few years craft beer has been an exploding trend across America. Everywhere you look there are new breweries and craft beer bars opening up. It used to be that ten to twenty tap handles was considered a lot. Now, we routinely see fifty handle bars featuring “No crap on tap” signs and bar owners that eight years ago couldn’t even spell IPA are scrambling to find the most flavorful of the heavily hopped beers. Given all that, it is no wonder that craft beer has grown consistently at double digit rates over the past five years and is well over 16% this year. However, another beverage is coming along for the ride. A beverage that proves , as Bruce Springsteen wrote, “Everything

dies, baby that’s a fact, but maybe everything that dies some day comes back…” Such is the case with hard cider. Hard cider, alcoholic fruit juice, usually from apples, is not a new creation. In fact it has been around ever since someone accidentally let apple juice sit around too long allowing the sugars to ferment from the natural yeasts in the air. Exactly when that happened is unclear. There are records of apple trees along the Nile River delta as early as 1300 BC but nothing to say if cider was produced. The earliest known record of cider dates back to 55 BC when the Romans arrived in England. They found the residents of Kent drinking a cider like beverage and

American history tells a different tale. Early English settlers introduced cider to America by bringing with them seeds for cultivating cider apples. During the colonial period, grains did not thrive well and were costly to import. On the other hand, apple orchards were plentiful, making apples cheap and easily obtainable. As a result, hard cider quickly became one of America’’s most popular beverages. Consumption of cider increased steadily during the eighteenth century, due in part to the efforts of the legendary Johnny Appleseed, who planted many apple trees in the Midwest. American cider started to wane in popularity when the German immigrants of the mid 1800’s brought with them recipes and methods for brewing beer that allowed them to set up large breweries and produce a large amount to sell relatively inexpensively. That coupled with the early rumblings of the Temperance Movement slowly led to the demise of hard cider in this country. Prohibition all but killed it off.

Cider was still made in very small batches at home. Typically this was accomplished by allowing regular apple juice or non-alcoholic cider to ferment naturally, much as the early ciders were made. This beverage, sometimes freeze distilled and called Applejack, was an alternative to the bathtub gin of Prohibition and continued to be enjoyed in individual households. However improved evaporative distillation methods which removed the impurities that freeze distillation left in, ensured that Applejack would never replace more traditional spirits.

Cider sort of plodded along through the years until the craft beer movement started in the mid 1970’s with the opening of the New Albion Brewery by pioneer brewer Jack McAuliffe. Slowly, as old boundaries were pushed in the production of beer, brewers and consumers started looking for different flavors and naturally looked to the past to update and hopefully improve nostalgic recipes. Such was the case for cider. While cider had remained in production in Europe, mostly England and France, Americans no longer had a cider tradition so they created new brands, ones that had more commercial opportunity then the more expensive imports. The wheels of the cider industry were slowly turning again. Apple at first and then some creativity introduced other fruits into the mix. Pear, Peach and Raspberry ciders were all produced, although in Continued On Page 50...

...Continued from page 48 truth, many of these were just apple ciders with flavoring added. These beverages typically had one thing in common, they were sweet, sometimes cloyingly so. They became another Zima like beverage, not beer, but close enough for people to drink and enjoy with beer drinkers. Still the popularity grew, and folks that had enjoyed flavored malt beverages like Zima started to flock to ciders and brewers found that ciders blended well with certain beers allowing the flavors in the beer to take some of the edge off the sweetness of the cider and the fruit in the cider to enhance the beer. Stout and cider has become a popular combination. One company in particular started looking at different ways to produce cider, and perhaps find flavors that went beyond sweet. Inspired by the English who make drier ciders and serve them over ice Crispin Ciders was born. Based in Minneapolis but with their cidery located in Northern California wine country, Crispin has re-invented cider once again. Their flagship cider is dry and served over ice. It has a pronounced difference from most American and even Canadian ciders. But that is not all they do. This is a creative bunch and experimentation is natural. Of course they have a fruit cider lineup, sold under the Fox Barrel label which includes a pear cider of course, but also a blackberry pear and an apricot pear cider. This creativity has become their hallmark and has extended well beyond fruit. How about a cider made with Trappist beer yeast and a little organic maple syrup? They’ve got that and it is called The Saint. Brewed with stout yeast and unfiltered…Lansdowne. Sake yeast and organic rice syrup… they’ve got Cho-Tokkyu. They even pay homage to the English ciders with their Brownslane cider which they have produced in England for authenticity. Named after the original Jaguar automobile factory, this beer comes in British Racing Green cans designed to make you feel like you are across the pond, as they say. With all this creativity, it is no wonder that pundits have dubbed them the “Dogfish Head of Cider.” But wait, there is more. Just as Dogfish Head comes up with seemingly crazy ideas for beer, Crispin brings the outlandish to the cider world and makes it work. Desert Noir was created especially for

an Arizona based beer event, but this combination of cider aged in whiskey barrels and cider aged in red wine oak barrels, and then sweetened up just a little with Agave Nectar and Prickly Pear syrup was so good that it was released nationally. Other special releases have included a straight bourbon barrel aged cider called The Jacket and one called The Union, created to celebrate the recent royal wedding. It is a combined fermentation, a marriage, of equal amounts of pure apple & pear juices using authentic French champagne yeast, with organic honey and kissed with a touch of rose water. Crispin even has a complete menu of cocktails and beer blends at CrispinCider.com. So there you have it, a short history ©2013 Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co., Chippewa Falls, WI * Beer of cider. The important thing to remember about cider is that it tastes great and is a refreshing alternative to beer. So, occasionally, when your palate may tire of hops and grains and such, reach for a cider. Try LN_Snowdrift Vanilla_2013_4-5x5_01011-6 JC.indd 1 something different, blend your cider with Breckenridge Vanilla Porter or Blue Moon, or try a cider cocktail. The American craft beer movement has depended on people searching for new flavors and unsatisfied with the status quo. Ciders help open up that world of taste just a little more.

If you store a bottle of wine at 70° F rather than 55° F, it will age twice as fast. Wine re-corked and placed in a refrigerator will keep for two to four days.

Wine was discovered about 6,000 years ago in either Mesopotamia, Palestine/Israel or what is now called Georgia.

The first wine grapes in California were planted in Downtown Los Angeles in 1833 at the current site of the Union Train Station.

Almost all wine grapes produce clear juice. Red wines get their color from the skins, which are included in the mix when a red wine is fermented. White wines usually are fermented only from juice, so they are much lighter in color.

TAVIT'S PHOTOGRAPHY To ring in a different kind of New Years, Insomniac put on its annual White Wonderland party. This 21+ event brought masses to the Anaheim Convention Center where headliners Laidback Luke, Steve Angelo, and Dash Berlin to name a few, brought thumping beats to dance into 2014. It seemed like every attempt to make the user experience fun and unforgettable was thought through and executed diligently. the focal point, The 2014 Wishing Tree: where you could write your wish on a card and connect it to others by ribbon upon the trees branches. These nice touches made the party that much more appealing and sentimental. There was a special synergy in the air as groups of friends, lovers, and family held each other close as the clock struck 12. At the end of the evening, as people went there way, you could see it in everyone’s faces‌ it was a NYE party that no one wanted to end.
