STAN ROBINSON

COLUMNISTS

Behind-the-Scenes! ‘Godzilla’ By Stan Robinson This re-telling of the classic story has the world’s most famous monster pitted against malevolent creatures that, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence. (PG-13 – 123 minutes)

To bring a story of this type to the screen, that visually features larger than life creatures interacting with structures and humans of normal size, encompasses the combining of ‘practical stunts’ (action performed by stunt personnel), CGI (computer generated images), green-screen combining of action & CGI, and miniaturized sets, all taking place within the same sequence!

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director Jim Mickle (‘Cold in July’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“I used to draw storyboards and ... when I think of things I think of them in black and white. So when I think of characters I sort of think of very fuzzy shapes or sometimes even just silhouettes. I am never able to look at characters and think, ‘This is McConaughey and this is so-and-so.’ I would love to be able to do that. It would make it much more easy to talk about casts with producers and stuff. “But the most beautiful thing in the world is once actors start trying clothes on. It is one of the most exciting portions of making a movie.

Our costume designer Liz Vastola had a blast on this. Michael [C. Hall] had just gotten there ... and we were both just sort of trying to figure out what his character was going to be. Then he started putting on these pants and these short-sleeved button-down shirts and all of the sudden that little fuzzy image in my mind solidified. “[Michael] is one of the really great actors who is able to sink into characters. When you look at the character he played on ‘Six Feet Under,’ it took a long time to accept him as Dexter. And once I had

accepted him as Dexter, it was hard to accept him as anything else. Every time he plays somebody he is able to dissolve into what that is.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

“That is not something you see very often. So many actors just play different versions of themselves. He was the one who suggested, ‘Hey, maybe I’ve got a mullet.’ He came in with a little bit of facial hair already and he shaved that mustache and took good care of it. It is a very cool process to see somebody not afraid to dissolve into [a character].” - Jim Mickle

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Cold in July’ Michael C. Hall plays a Texan who, initially hailed as a hero for fatally shooting a low-life burglar who broke into his house, begins to fear for his family’s safety when the victim’s ex-con father (Sam Shepard) turns up in town making some notso-veiled threats. (NR - 109 minutes) Joseph: The first 30 minutes of “Cold in July” is exceptionally gripping, fusing the home invasion and revenge genres into one compelling concoction. However, just when things are at their utmost intensity, a wrench is thrown into the tale and the story suddenly shifts into a completely different direction that feels somewhat forced and incredibly implausible.

Randy Montgomery’s ‘Movie Tweets’ ‘Blended’ ~ Why, oh why do I continue to see Adam Sandler movies? Crate this one off and send it to a far away African plain. Grade: D ‘Godzilla’ ~ The visual effects are top-notch, but there is something about the cheesy quality of the original that cannot be matched. Grade: B‘Million Dollar Arm’ ~ While well acted, there is little new to offer with this traditional “underdog” sentimental sports flick not seen in countless others. Grade: C+

‘Neighbors’ ~ A moderately funny and moderately touching 96 minute raunch fest with actors (Efron and Byrne) that deserve better. Grade: C ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2’ ~ I think Spidey needs to take a break. Not that this is a bad film, but he has overstayed his welcome. Grade: B‘The Other Woman’ ~ Starts off promising, then turns into a silly, unbelievable romp. A waste of such a talented cast. Grade: C+ ‘X-Men Days of Future Past’ ~ In a season w/ superheroes & comic book characters, this stands out from the rest, and is the best in its own franchise. A winner!Grade:A

The museum features photographs, artifacts and minerals in addition to a video presentation and a 3-D model of the town with its underground mines. Take a Stroll with Niccole: Biking Rillito Path - Dodge to the Train Tracks at I-10 The Rillito, the Spanish word for little river, probably should have been named Rillito Seco as this gorgeous arroyo is actually dry most of the year. Once in a while it will come to life during monsoons for a short period of time, but the dry sand swallows all the moisture up quickly as the summer sun’s heat radiates across our Sonoran desert. This trail is an awesome way to commute from the east side at Craycroft to northwest Tucson at I-10 and escape the traffic of the city streets on a bike.

This route also has parallel dirt paths for mountain bikers, runners and walkers. The Rillito River Path from Dodge to I-10 is about 18 miles (round trip) of smooth paved twoway path that cuts under bridges with easy and fun inclines and descents along the way. There is a plethora of wildlife out here; birds, bats, hawks, rabbits, desert rats and reptiles of all kinds. This path passes water fountains, bathrooms, rest areas, parks, a raceway, and the Tucson Racquet club which has a great

restaurant and bar that is open to the public. I have been hitting this trail every week and it is beautiful this time of year with the cool breeze from the wash and the white blossoms on the majestic saguaros. Pima County has been out numerous times over the past few weeks to plant new trees and cacti and keep the grounds well manicured. The westbound river path is a fun and easy ride for all ages and abilities. I prefer to go for the sunrise or sunset hours because from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. it is really hot out there with very little shade. The Rillito River Path is just a small part of the Tucson “Loop” which is an extensive system of shared use paths to help commuters of all types get around town without facing automobile traffic. From the westbound Rillito

you can continue your adventure on the Santa Cruz path if you want to head North or South. I recommend you take a lot of water, sunscreen and a camera because there are many beautiful scenes along this route to capture. Get outside and ride the Rillito Bike Path this season! If you are interested in seeing pictures of this and other treks all around the Tucson area, check out my Facebook page “Take a stroll with Niccole”, or upload your own trek pictures for other people to see! Roger Clyne to Perform in 7 Tucson Locations on May 31st in one Mexican Moonshine-Filled Day! Recording artist Roger Clyne will be celebrating his recent Gold Medal award for his Anejo Tequila as well as the recent release of his new album, The Independent, new hit song “Ain’t Got The Words”, and upcoming Circus Mexicus beach festival and concert by appearing at 7 local great tequila-serving bars and restaurants on Saturday, May 31. The event in Tucson is the Mexican Moonshine Cantina Crawl, and it’s a chance for local Tucsonans to hear an acoustic performance by Clyne in each of 7 locations in only one day! Of course drink specials will abound at each location and if you have not tried the Mexican Moonshine brand of signature tequilas you are in for a treat. The award-winning Mexican Moonshine Anejo Tequila brand recently won another gold medal out of 1,500 spirits from 41 states and 63 countries at the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Not too shabby! The name Mexican Moonshine Tequila comes from the Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers song called “Mexican Moonshine” off the acclaimed album, Americano. RCPM released their seventh studio album, The Independent, on April 29th and will be promoted by a U.S. tour and Clyne’s own famous and independently produced 4-day Circus Mexicus Festival, presented by Mexican Moonshine Tequila, in Rocky Point Mexico June 5-8. Over 4,000 attended last year’s festival. But before all that, you just have to get your Moonshine-lovin’ butt to Hi Fi, (Downtown’s newest Hot Spot) at 2:30pm, Old Father Inn at 3:30pm, Finis Landing at 5pm, Dante’s Fire at 6:15pm, Agustin Kitchen at 7:30pm, Junxion Bar at 8:30 and finally, Hotel Congress at 9:30pm this Saturday, May 31st to hear Roger play some special acoustic sets and of course sample some mighty fine shine! of “Drop DeaD Diva” on LIfeTIMe •How has your character, Grayson, evolved over the years?

The root of him is still the same, but he has definitely gone through ups and downs. He finally finds out the real deal, and that is huge. That’s what the audience is looking for, for Grayson and Jane to wind up together. •You lived with this character for six seasons. Who is he at his essence?

He is an idealist, all-American from the Midwest.

•When did you know that you wanted to be an actor?

I studied business and worked in finance for five years. All the while, I was acting, using sick days. I was in Dallas. A few of the movies I shot while I was at Citigroup. I wanted to go the smart route; chances of becoming successful are probably less than 1 percent. •What will you change when you’re no longer playing Grayson?

Longer hair and a beard.

Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go. - William Feather 64 20
