Woody Harrelson

HBO’s dark ‘Detective’

In the hinterlands of Louisiana, a naked young woman has been murdered and bound, kneeling, near a tree, with antlers tied to her head. The only thing stranger than the crime may be the investigation – and the investigators. Written by novelist Nic Pizzolatto (“The Killing”), HBO’s eight-episode “True Detective,” premiering Sunday, Jan. 12, measures the cost of two men’s obsession with justice. Also starring are Michelle Monaghan, Kevin Dunn, Shea Whigham, Clarke Peters and Jay O. Sanders. It’s 1995, and two mismatched Louisiana State Police detectives – conflicted family man Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and nihilistic Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) – are called to the crime scene. In 2012, the two now-former detectives, whose lives have taken dark turns, are brought back together to revisit the case when a similar crime occurs. As they narrate the strands of their original investigation, Hart and Cohle are drawn back into a maelstrom they thought they’d escaped by solving the crime. Sitting side by side on a couch in a Beverly Hills hotel, the two movie stars – Harrelson was in the TV series “Cheers” but hasn’t done television since; McConaughey has never done television before – talk about their roles, each other’s performances and what may come next. Here are some excerpts: McConaughey on learning the ropes of gradual character development on television: “It just took more patience. The writing was great, so every week, I was continuously working on ‘What is the source intent of these words Nic wrote?’ The first time I read it, I couldn’t wait to hear what came out of Rust Cohle’s mouth. I loved what he said. I loved the honesty he had and his point of view. “You usually don’t get that in a movie. It’s harder to get much of that.” On the characters’ endlessly prickly and combative relationship: Harrelson: “It’s great. I’ve never seen anything where they never find this moment. They never have a beer, have a hug, anything.” McConaughey: “What you said earlier was right on the money. In our real life, in tennis, he hits it, and I’m going to hit it back with more steam, and he’s going to hit it back with more steam. We affirm each other. “This was, he said, ‘I hit to him, and he’d just stand there. The ball would go by, hit the wall, bounce down and just come to a rest.’ Maybe I’d walk over and go pick it up, or maybe I’d look around and say, ‘Is there a ball boy around?’ “ Harrelson: “Boy, that’s true. It’s so wild.”

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE

ABOUT THE FILM

COLUMNISTS STAN ROBINSON

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Her’

‘August: Osage County’

‘Lone Survivor’

A look at the lives of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose paths have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Oklahoma house they grew up in and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. (R - 121 minutes)

Mark Wahlberg plays the lone surviving member in a team of Navy SEALS who are tasked with the mission to capture or kill notorious Taliban leader Ahmad Shahd. Other stars include Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Eric Bana. (R - 120 minutes)

Stan: Actor George Clooney continues his behind-the-camera involvements as one of the producers of this story that features outstanding performances by Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts with roles and characterizations against their usual type casting to present a powerful story on family relationships, with ‘August: Osage County’ easily making one of my best movies of 2013.

Stan: As a Vietnam veteran these types of films are a hard watch, bringing back memories that a constant effort to suppress is sometimes ongoing. ‘Lone Survivor’ presents the attributes of gorilla warfare with an ‘up close and personal’ edge. Admittedly, it wasn’t the visuals that made it tough viewing, rather the sounds in the film that awakened those memories of over 45 years ago…

Randy: A strong cast saves what easily could have been a forgettable dysfunctional family drama. What works on stage does not necessarily make an entertaining big screen adaptation. With a mix of humor and drama, ‘August’ manages to keep your attention while you marvel at the performances, specifically that of Meryl Streep who is at her finest.

Randy: This is a tough watch, but a rewarding one (if you can call it that). While many have complained that the movie comes off as an Armed Services commercial, I could not agree less. The film celebrates the heroes and those that risk and lose their lives every day to keep us safe here at home in the United States. But, it also does not shy away from the inherent horrors and gruesome reality that is associated with the task. The best war film since ‘Saving Private Ryan’.

Joseph: “August: Osage County” features some spectacular acting but it tells a story that works better on the stage than it does on the screen. Granted, the powerful performances are worth the price of admission in and of themselves (not to mention more fun to watch than your own dysfunctional family’s vehemently violent verbal exchanges) but it all adds up to too much talk and not enough action.

Joseph: “Lone Survivor” is excruciatingly entertaining, telling the story of a group of Navy SEALS who risk - and, in this case, give - their lives and refuse to go down without a fight. The new movie mimics their relentlessness with graphic brutality while paying tribute to the men who will take a bullet to their head and break every bone in their body but remarkably keep moving forward.

Joaquin Phoenix plays a lonely writer who develops an unlikely relationship with his newly purchased operating system (Scarlett Johansson) that is designed to meet his every need. Amy Adams, Olivia Wilde and Rooney Mara also star. (R - 120 minutes) Stan: For those of us with computer systems with speaking voices, and yes my Mac computer voice of choice is ‘Serena’ a British English voice, is highly relatable in the world that director Spike Jonze presents. Spending hours at my system as a writer and ‘Serena’s’ voice reminding me of deadlines, appointments, and even reading this copy aloud, Joaquin Phoenix’s character and the underlying theme of ‘Her’, serves as a reminder of our basic human need to connect through interaction, on any level. Randy: Director Spike Jonze does a great job in creating the mood for a not-so-distant future Los Angeles where people become obsessed and intimate with their operating systems. Does not sound so far-fetched, does it? We find ourselves yelling at Siri and looking down at our telephone screens pretty much all day long. While the film dragged a bit and I had a hard time getting into the storyline at first, it eventually redeems itself and becomes remarkably heart-felt. Phoenix overcomes the stigma of his last project and talk show hijinks. Joseph: Rarely having another human being to act opposite, star Joaquin Phoenix gives an emotional performance in “Her” that is nothing short of outstanding. Having said that, while the new romantic dramedy makes a remarkable point about our ever-decreasing willingness to make potentially risky, interpersonal connections, 2002’s “S1m0ne” did so with much more entertainment value.

MOVIE TWEETS!

Still haven’t seen that movie that your friends have been talking about? Film Columnist Randy Montgomery recaps what you may have missed in 140 characters or less. ‘American Hustle’ ~ One of the best pictures of 2013 features an intriguing and inventive plot and a cast of actors that shine in their roles. Grade: A

‘Anchorman 2’ ~ Idiotic, poorly written & filled with jokes that fall flat. Spend 2 hours watching CSPAN instead. Steve Carell is beyond annoying, Grade: D+

‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ ~ The B&W cinematography and fantastic set and production design transport you to the early 60’s. The memorable original music draws you in. Grade: A ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ ~ Mandela’s passing makes Idris Alba’s performance even more haunting and worthy of the praise he has been receiving for the role. Grade: B-

Best ‘Girl’ Movies

By Jay BoBBin

‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’ ~ Laughs, thrills, chills & an inventive take on a franchise that does not seem to wear out its welcome, despite numerous sequels. Grade: B+

‘Saving Mr. Banks’ ~ Fine performances & a glimpse into the mind of a writer known for creating one of the most recognizable stories of the 20th century. Grade: A

Omar Sharif and Barbra Streisand of “Funny Girl”

‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ ~ One of my favorite books turned out to be one of the biggest let downs of the season under Ben Stiller’s direction. Grade: C

‘Walking With Dinosaurs’ ~ A pre-historic mess. Simplistic plot, juvenile humor, educational cut-ins & horrible voiceovers. Not sure what they were thinking. Grade: D

“Funny Girl” (1968) Barbra Streisand made a stunning movie debut, and earned an Oscar, by recreating her stage role as entertainer Fanny Brice. “The Goodbye Girl” (1977) Marsha Mason plays the “girl” of the title in then-husband Neil Simon’s script, but Richard Dreyfuss won an Academy Award as her struggling actor roommate. “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” (1985) A classic among those who love it, this comedy gave early starring roles to Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt.

By Santino Defranco Want authentic Mexican food, but don’t have a passport? Unwilling to spend three and a half hours in a car to drive across the border for cuisine? Well there’s good news Phoenix. If you want something different than the standard, usual fare of every Mexican restaurant you’ve ever walked into, then you need to go to Barrio Café in downtown Phoenix. Barrio is on 16th St., just South of Thomas Rd. in the Calle 16 district—a neighborhood that is using art and outside murals in an attempt to reclaim their streets from the old age and low incomes that have let much of the downtown area run down over the years. The entire building that houses Barrio is wrapped in bright painted murals, offering a beautiful contrast to the ever-so-common browns and tans that Phoenix is used to. Inside Barrio you will notice this is not your standard Mexican joint. Barrio doesn’t serve rice and beans (at all), many of their recipes have French infusions, and many patrons may get sticker shock when they see that many of the plates’ prices rival those of any high-end North Scottsdale restaurant. What Barrio does serve is carefully crafted, beautifully executed, fine Mexican cuisine. When we sat down, the first thing I noticed was the lack of chips and salsa on the table. Instead, there was a bowl of bread and a tapenade. I was annoyed, partially because it wasn’t

what I expected, partially because I was starving and I am always annoyed when I’m hungry. My annoyance quickly turned to praise and excitement when I put the first piece of bread with a spread of the tapenade in my mouth. The clouds parted from the skies and it was nothing but happy dreams and happily-ever-afters from then on. My Enchiladas Suiza, a Mexican City style of enchilada stuffed with chicken and topped with a tomatillo cream sauce, was something I might drive over the border for. My wife got the Tacos de Pescado (Fish Tacos) consisting of breaded, fried halibut with cabbage and avocado, served with a chipotle sauce. They were delicious. I mean, I said they were halibut, right? If that’s not enough to sway you, they make their own guacamole. Right there when you order it, with whatever you want in it. Yes, you read that right. They have a guac-maker that comes to your table with delights such as onions, jalapenos, cilantro, corn, limes and garlic, among other items, and mixes them right into freshly mashed avocado right before your eyes. If you’d like to see their full menu, go to www.barriocafe.com, but beware, some of the prices online are not updated. I paid $19 for my enchiladas, but online they are listed at $17. Also, the descriptions online are not as detailed as the in-restaurant menu. Barrio Café is truly a diamond in the rough, and you can locate that diamond at 2814 N 16th St, Phoenix, AZ 85006.

WORDS FROM THE WISE

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.

Who is the happier man, he who has braved the storm of life and lived or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed? -Hunter S. Thompson

The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion. Albert Camus

AS GOOD AS GOLF GETS The Legacy Golf Club in Phoenix is more than a round of golf; it’s an experience By Teresa Gardner Aptly named, The Legacy Golf Club leaves a lasting impression of local history coupled with an engaging golf experience. Set against the backdrop of scenic South Mountain, the course draws you in with its charm, lulling you into a state of serenity with its lovely rolling hills adorned with century-old wagons, rusty wheels and antique farm implements. But don’t be fooled by her charm. The Legacy Golf Club is challenging. Every tee box is surrounded by desert—except the two holes where you have to carry water off the tee—and good luck navigating Legacy’s deep bunkers. They’re everywhere … or better said, strategically placed. The Legacy Golf Club is a sprawling 18-hole, par-71 championship course on what was once a 7,500-acre ranch owned by Arizona entrepreneur Dwight B. Heard. Great pains were taken by course architect Gary Panks in 1999 to integrate the indigenous vegetation

and continue the Heard legacy by preserving many of the historical structures on the property. The original two-grain silos, built in 1902 and at the time existed as the tallest structures in Maricopa County, still stand as sentinels over the 18th fairway. Stories abound of President Teddy Roosevelt and Pancho Villa visiting the old bunkhouse just off the first tee. It’s now beautifully restored as the Sierra Vista House. With four sets of tee boxes, there is something for every skill level at Legacy Golf Club, ranging from 5,471 yards from the women’s tees to the copper tees at 6,946 yards. The grass is always green at Legacy, thanks to unlimited water rights grandfathered in decades ago prior to water regulation. It is one of the few Arizona golf courses that has all the water it needs. The greens are well maintained … oh, and they’re fast, I might add. The elevation of Legacy offers excellent views of the downtown Phoenix skyline, Camelback Mountain, Squaw Peak and, of course, South Mountain. Thanks to a mesquite and eucalyptus-lined cart path with the occasional Mexican Fan Palm and Palo Verde tree, there is ample relief

from the relentless Arizona sun and a dramatic desert landscape. It’s understandable why Legacy Golf Club was named one of the “Top 10 Golf Courses to Play in Phoenix” by Golf Digest and rated the top public course by ESPN.com. It’s a beautiful setting, it tests you as a golfer, you’re surrounded by history, you feel the legacy and its charm beckons you back for more. And, it’s reasonably priced. Legacy offers what it calls “Happy Hour,” Monday through Thursday from 10am to 2pm. You can play for a buck a hole—that’s right, $18 for a round of golf. Let the legacy linger by finishing your round with a stop at The Grille for a delicious and healthy salad, sandwich, burger or wrap. The Legacy Golf Club is part of the Legacy Resort, which features more than 300 condominium suites, tennis courts, pools, fitness center and spa. The Legacy Resort can accommodate special events and retreats and is located ten minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.

Another Good Reason to Visit The Legacy Golf Club In March, Legacy opened its Golf Performance Center run by the Raspberry Golf Academy. The 7,500 sq. foot facility is home to golf’s highest precision technology and latest instructional techniques. Legacy Golf Club General Manager, Rich Strozewski, says the facility’s offerings are truly revolutionary. Equipped with five air-cooled indoor hitting bays, a full simulator room featuring the E6 TruGolf HD simulator, a TrackMan Pro, a K-Vest, SAM PuttLab and FlightScope, the performance center is attracting golfers and instructors from all over the world to rent its bays and use the facilities. The Legacy Golf Performance Center provides private lessons, 3-D evaluations, professional club fitting, course management analysis, short game and putting lessons, golf fitness programs, simulator lessons and rental and group seminars. Strozeweski says the center is so much more than an instructional facility for improving your golf game. There’s a 2,200 sq. foot meeting space inside the center for hosting events, conferences, banquets or birthday parties. A popular activity is renting the simulator room. The simulator rental not only provides instant feedback on ball flight, spin and launch angles, but you and your buddies could be engaging in a par-3 contest or long drive contest or virtually playing St. Andrews or Pebble Beach—all within just 30 minutes of your house. “It’s great for team building events. We just want people to have fun,” says Strozewski. For more information, visit: www. legacygolfperformancecenter.com. So many people and even scientists used to believe that the brain was “hardwired” early in life and couldn’t change later in life. I can remember some of my teachers telling me this garbage in high school trying to scare me into taking my studies more seriously. I didn’t believe them then and I don’t believe them now, especially after reading the research of Dr. Michael Merzenich, a professor at the University of California at San Francisco which basically says that the brain’s ability to change…its “plasticity” is life-long. We can change if we can stop believing some of the myths concerning our ability as people to change throughout our lifetime. First, stop believing that small, gradual changes are always easier to make and sustain. My experience and Dr. Merzenich’s research shows that radical, sweeping changes are often easier because they quickly yield results and you get a psychic lift that helps propel you forward. Secondly, people who think that change is motivated by fear. It didn’t work on me in high school and it still doesn’t work now because it’s too easy for people to slip into denial of all the bad things that might happen to them. I think a clear, positive vision of the future is a much stronger, more positive, inspiring message for change. I remember back in 2001 when I started to play the guitar rather seriously. I practiced daily, I purchased good equipment and

hired the best instructor I could find. I was amazed… not only did I make amazing strides in my playing, but I got smarter. My brain grew. My memory improved and I became a better writer. After reading the research of Dr. Merzenich, I realized that this was no accident…this behavior was causing my brain to distort…to change forever. These changes actually show up on MRI scans. Professional musicians, business specialists, language specialists etc. have large representations in their brains that control the area of their specialty…they’ve distorted their brains. Unless you work on it, your brain’s fitness level begins to decline around age 35 or so for men and a bit later for women. Mental rejuvenation is a product of constant learning. Learning that never stops. People often mistake being active for continuous learning. No. The brain is only changed by learning something new… something challenging and new. People think they’re leading an interesting life when they haven’t learned anything new in 20 or 30 years. To get your brain back in the game and start to get the most out of yourself mentally… I suggest you start by learning a new language and/or learn how to play a musical instrument…or both. By doing this form of mental rejuvenation, your brain begins to change almost immediately and innovation comes about when smart people are enabled to use their entire brain at its full potential instead of having it put in a box and controlled forever… like a rat. Understanding and ultimately mastering your ability to change isn’t just a crucial strategy for business…it’s a necessity for life… for your health… for your family… for your future. -Mack Newton Mack Newton is an 8th Degree Black Belt, Senior Master Instructor, Global Tae KwonDo Federation International and Chairman of the World Technical Committee

The Best Beers You Can’t Drink

) a n o z i r A n i t o (at least n

A new year begins and thoughts turn to beer. Fair enough, our thoughts always turn to beer, but that isn’t the point. The point is that each new year comes with the promise of new beers to try. The question always asked is what new breweries are coming to Arizona this year. Well, we don’t have a crystal ball, but we do know what some of the best beers that we can’t get in Arizona are. If you want them, you will need to do some creative shopping either over the internet or through friends that live elsewhere (and check out the legalities of shipping beer first), but the right beer may just be worth the trouble. So here

are some of the most requested beers that we don’t get in Arizona. One of the most requested beers is Yuengling. This Pottsville, Pennsylvania brewery bills itself as America’s Oldest Brewery, and given its continuous operation since 1829, they seem to be correct. Their flagship beer is Yuengling Traditional Lager which has a subtle malt sweetness with a hint of hops. It is so well known in the Philadelphia area, most people simply order a lager and receive it. While not a craft brewery (it is one of the largest breweries in the country), craft enthusiasts do enjoy their beers,

and for many area natives who have moved away, it is the first beer they look for upon a return visit. They also can be credited for the first bottled Black and Tan in 1986. The other beers that we don’t currently get here are definitely in the craft category. Russian River is at the top of that list. Located in Santa Rosa, California, this brewery runs parallel paths, producing some incredible IPAs as well as some of the best Belgian style beers around. Pliny the Elder, named for the 1st Century Roman author and Philosopher, is considered to be the first Double IPA and is

recognized as one of the best. The Belgian series, many of them barrel aged and at least partially fermented with the wild yeast Brettanomyces, consists of Damnation, Supplication, Temptation and a variety of others with the same naming pattern. Brewmaster Vinnie Cirluzo even got around to brewing the long awaited Procrastination to the shock of Russian River regulars. Many East Coast craft beers don’t make it to Arizona due to the distance and expense involved in shipping. Two that Arizonans have been patiently CONTINUED ON 44...

BEER! SECTION ...Continued from page 42 waiting for are Brooklyn Brewing and Harpoon. Brooklyn Brewing, located appropriately enough in Brooklyn, is known for making uncommonly good food beers and brewmaster Garrett Oliver is considered by most to be the foremost authority on food and beer pairing in the country. His beer dinners are legendary and accomplished chefs

defer to his expertise when planning menus for these events. Lately the series of big bottle beers including Local One and Local Two, as well as Black Ops, have been exciting our fellow beer drinkers in the east. Harpoon Brewing is located in Boston and produce several sought after beers. Their IPA is considered one of the classics of the East Coast style IPAs

and the UFO Series of unfiltered beers has gained some recognition. Add to that the Winter Warmer and the 100 Barrel series products and they have a solid lineup guaranteed to excite the Arizona drinker. New Glarus Brewing in Wisconsin produces some very sought after beers. Their line at the Great American Beer Festival is always one of the longest. Despite being distributed exclusively in their home state, they are still one of the twenty largest craft breweries in the country. Spotted Cow, a farmhouse style ale, Wisconsin Belgian Red, Raspberry Tart and their Unplugged series are particularly large

selling products for them. No craft beer lover can go to Wisconsin without bringing back some New Glarus. Boulevard Brewing in Kansas City bill themselves as the “second largest brewery in Missouri,” although they are just a few million barrels behind number one. They make an outstanding collection of core beers including one of the best porters out there, Bully Porter and their Single Wide IPA, both of which are amazing. They also produce a series of special beers under the moniker, Smokestack Series, which includes the Double Wide Double IPA, Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale and CONTINUED ON 46...

...CONTINUED FROM 44 the Hans Christian Andersen inspired The Sixth Glass, a Belgian style Quad with great flavor and a great following. There is also a seasonal series of Smokestack beers, along with some special releases which frequently play around with Brettanomyces, a wild yeast. This is just a small sampling of some of the great beers out there that we don’t see in Arizona yet. There is Founders, Sweetwater, Cigar City, Captain Lawrence, Southern Tier, and many more. Two things to remember…

Arizona is one of the only states, not contiguous to Michigan that is able to drink Bell’s Beers, and we get Oberon year round where other states only get it in the summer; and New Belgium isn’t available in many states in the east, while we get everything from Fat Tire to the Lips of Faith Series. So it’s not all bad for Arizona. Enjoy the beers we have, seek out other great beers when you travel, and always keep an eye out for the next great beer to hit the shelves. And let’s try to guess which of these beers will announce distribution in Arizona in 2014.

In 1801, President Thomas Jefferson spent $3,000 on wine, 12 percent of his annual salary. To put that in modern context, that would be like President Obama spending $48,000 on wine this year alone. In ancient Greece, the dinner host would take the first sip of wine to ensure it was safe to drink, giving us the phrase to “drink to one’s health.” The tradition of a celebratory “toast” began with the ancient Romans, who would drop a piece of toasted bread in their wine to buffer unpleasant tastes and excessive acidity.

California, by itself, is the world’s fourth largest producer of wine after France, Italy and Spain. Washington, D.C., consumes more wine per capita than any state in the nation.

The alcohol bill for a celebration party for the 55 drafters of the Constitution was 54 bottles of Madeira, 60 bottles of Bordeaux, eight bottles of whiskey, 22 bottles of port, eight bottles of hard cider, 12 beers and seven bowls of alcohol punch large enough that “ducks could swim in them.”

TAVIT'S PHOTOGRAPHY

On December 27th & 28th, Dallas, Texas got a huge dosage of Electronic Dance Music. Lights All Night’s two day party was on everyone’s mind. Headliners Deadmau5, Kaskade, Above & Beyond, Krewella, and Nicky Romero to name a few, blew the roof off of the Dallas Convention Center. While the artists were one piece of the puzzle, I sought out for the full ‘user’ experience. Vendors lined the back of the rooms, supplying rave accessories, apparel and even a full salon just in case if you didn’t have time to finish getting ready! The intense positive energy sprung off all four walls in

January 8th, 2014 - January 14th, 2014

two massive rooms which rocked thousands of ears, song after song. One shocker was that security was into the music just as the crowd was. There is no denying that everyone had a great time. With LED hula hoop shows, girls up on shoulders, and confetti canons, this was perhaps one of the most alluring experiences Dallas has had all year. The production value kept the crowd engaged and anywhere you stood was a great spot to enjoy the show. If 2013 is any indication of what 2014’s Lights All Night holds, be sure to do what you can to make it to this years show.

CHRISTIAN MUSIC ICON MICHAEL W. SMITH Saturday, January 11th at Celebrity Theatre The historic Celebrity Theatre will present multiple Grammy Award winning Christian artist Michael W. Smith at 8 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Smith began his career as a songwriter, penning songs for Amy Grant, Bill Gaither, and Sandi Patty before releasing his Grammy nominated debut album The Michael W. In the ‘90s, Smith became one of the Christian format’s first crossover artists with hits such as “Place in This World,” which peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100, and “I Will Be Here for You,” a No. 1 AC hit. The three-

time Grammy winner is also known as one of the key architects of the current popularity of worship music. A noted composer, he’s also released two acclaimed instrumental albums, including his most recent project, Glory, which received a Dove Award for “Best Instrumental” Album of the Year. Smith has charted 29 albums on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart, including 13 No. 1 titles and 25 that placed in the top 10.
