Pals grow up ‘Playing House’

By JACqUeliNe CUTler

Jessica St. Clair stars in “Playing House,” premiering Tuesday on USA Network.

Emma and Maggie are lifelong best friends, the sort of true friends who show up at the other’s home in the middle of the night with a body bag and shovel and ask no questions. They love each other unconditionally, as childhood friends can even when their lives have gone in very separate directions as they have on USA Network’s “Playing House,” premiering Tuesday, April 29. “I feel like Jessica (St. Clair, who plays Emma) and I have been charged, in the greater scheme, of putting our version of joy into the world,” says Lennon Parham (“Accidentally on Purpose”), who plays Maggie. “And I think it is an important job. And from the Twitter responses we got with ‘Best Friends Forever’ and the small feedback we are getting as the show is meted out, I think people are seeing themselves in the show and enjoying seeing female friendship portrayed in the way it really is. There are ups and downs, and you have each other’s backs – and not that catty girl friendship you see a lot. And to bring joy and friendship and stories people can relate (to) and feel with their BFFs.” The two actresses are best friends, and they created the show together. Parham recalls, “In the summer of 2012 – and we do as we do when we get together to brainstorm an idea – we were both probably eating grilled cheese and watching ‘Oprah’s Favorite Things,’ so it will never end, and we both brought a few things to the table of what we wanted our next project to be. And Jessica said, ‘What if we raised a baby together?’ ” April 23rd, 2014 - April 29th, 2014

In the very funny pilot, Emma is an executive in a business meeting in China, trying to extricate herself so she can get on a plane to Connecticut. There, she returns to Maggie’s home just in time for the baby shower. This becomes the sort of baby shower where, if it were recorded, it would go viral instantly. It is not intended for anyone who is easily offended or who finds PG humor blue. The women at the shower are watching a montage of baby photos on the flatscreen TV that is connected through the Wi-Fi in the house. Maggie’s husband is in the basement, on his laptop, which winds up overriding what the women are watching at the shower. Let’s just say that what some men do online, in their basements, is best left unknown. In this case, though, it is pretty funny. It also leads to Maggie throwing him out of the house, which she can do because it is her home, inherited after her parents died. Now Maggie needs Emma. Maggie needs her to help raise the baby; Emma needs Maggie as well. She needs a life beyond boardrooms and a dictatorial boss. But Emma had fled small-town Connecticut for a reason. “I grew up in this little town where people knew your business,” St. Clair says of her character. “I left because I never felt like I totally fit into this town and felt I was destined for more international things. I lived this fab life in China. And it was kind of empty, but I am coming home.”

Tucson Museum of Art celebrates the artistry of Rose Cabat--an American studio ceramicist living in Tucson. Considered one of the most important ceramic artists of the Mid-century Modernist movement, Cabat is best known for her innovative glazes on small porcelain pots called “feelies” which she developed in the 1960s. Her organic forms often resemble the shape of onions and figs, and her glazes range from organic to jewel tones. This exhibition will be a survey of her different styles from the 1960s until the present to celebrate the year of her 100th birthday.

While one mission of The Drawing Studio, a non-profit arts organization, is to teach the skills of visual literacy, another is to encourage and nurture artistic practice through exhibition. Exhibits, therefore, may encompass timely issues in the broad community as well as among artists. The “Love Your Mother (Earth)” exhibit intersects art and reality, a mission worthy of any arts organization. You will have the opportunity to add your voice—in the form of pledges, art statements, or photos—to the issue of the changing conditions on our earth when you attend the “Love Your Mother (Earth)” exhibit at The Drawing Studio.

‘Dom Hemingway’

‘Alan Partridge’

‘Jodorowsky’s Dune’

Steve Coogan plays a DJ, whose radio station is taken over by a new media conglomerate, setting in motion a chain of events, which see him having to work with the police to defuse a potentially violent siege. (R - 90 minutes)

Randy: What would the classic Lynch film ‘Dune” be like is someone else made it? Or what would any movie be like with a different director? This is a fascinating tale not only for movie buffs with a love of cinema, but for anyone who has had a dream that never became reality. Jorodowsky may not be a household name and probably won’t be after this either, but it at least offers credit for his vision.

Randy: A feeble attempt by Coogan to bring to the big screen one of his famous character portrayals. While dubbed as a comedy, the actual laughter is on again and off again. The story drags and does not always seem to work. I have never found Coogan to be outrageously funny and the same holds true here. Joseph: “Alan Partridge’s” dry, overthe-top sense of humor will leave you in stitches regardless of your familiarity with the character for which it is titled. A few physical gags will have you laughing out-loud and its soundtrack is spectacular but, in the end, it is the rapid-fire one-liners for which this flick will be known.

Herb: Not just for sci-if genre fans, this documentary is about the greatest film never made. The film tells the story of an aborted attempt to turn Frank Herbert’s masterpiece “Dune”, into a trippy star-studded event picture. It is both sad for the sense of what might have been, and a look at how the creative process is destroyed by money and ego. This brilliant documentary was a hit at Cannes last year and is finally in theaters stateside.

Herb: Steve Coogan inhabits the skin of radio jock Alan Partridge, flawlessly. This funny look at the world of broadcasting, hits all the right notes with its quirky characters, from the corporate suits to the has been, one-note fellow DJ’s in Coogan’s orbit. This delightful little comedy is worth a look.

Jude Law plays a notorious safecracker who, after spending 12 years in prison for keeping his mouth shut, is back on the streets of London looking to collect what he is owed. (R - 93 minutes) Randy: Director Richard Shepard gives audiences a perfect mix of raunchy comedy and human emotion. Jude Law may seem like an odd choice for the titular role, but played the part perfectly. His character, although obnoxious, was smartly written and expertly delivered to the point where you actually felt sorry for him. The pacing was spot on and the musical score fit nicely. This could (oddly) be one of Law’s finest performances.

Joseph: “Dom Hemingway’s” dialogue is violent, profane and perverse but by God is it not also poetic, proving that writer/director Richard Shepard has a way with words and that when star Jude Law delivers said words, the result is a tour de force performance that will sear itself into your memory. Herb: Jude Law delivers a startling performance from the opening scene, all the way through to the end of this brash, in your face, crime caper. While I admire his efforts, the film was a big loud mess in my book. Richard E. Grant was a hoot, but otherwise I was turned off.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director Mike Flanagan, Executive Producer Jason Blum and Producer Trevor Macy (‘Oculus’) By Joseph J. Airdo

In “Oculus,” Karen Gillan plays a woman who tries to exonerate her brother, who was convicted of murder, by proving that the crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon.

footage was just the absolute wrong fit for this kind of story and it took a very long time and a lot of very frustrating meetings to kind of get past that kneejerk reaction ... and find people that wanted to do it differently.” - Mike Flanagan

“One of the things that we bumped into a lot when people would look at the short and want to do the feature is that they would come at it and say, ‘This clearly should be a found-footage movie.’ And that was never the way we wanted to go because one of the things about found-footage is you absolutely have to believe that what you are seeing in the frame is objective reality.

“Part of the purpose of this movie is to compromise the objectivity of both the protagonists and - if we have done our jobs right - the audience. So being able to have Mike select what he was shooting and editing in order to do that was kind of essential. You have more options when you don’t have found footage.” - Trevor Macy

“The whole conceit of that style of filmmaking relies on that. And for this, it is all about distorting reality and never really knowing what is real. So found-

“If someone is dying or hurt or anything you want to see in a movie - any dramatic action - that is the last time you are holding a camera. If someone is

in jeopardy and you are in the room, you are very unsympathetic if you are [ just standing around filming it]. It is very hard to put drama into found-footage.” - Jason Blum

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

Writer/Director Zack Parker (‘Proxy’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“I tend to be what some would call a slow-burn filmmaker to begin with and with this film I just wanted to hit people pretty hard at the beginning to sort of throw them off balance and give them the sense that anything can happen with this film thereby creating an innate sense of suspense and also earning the time then to build a character and story with almost this unspoken promise that something like this can be around the next corner. “I am really interested in playing around with audience expectations. I feel that we have been many generations of filmgoers now and audiences have become quite savvy as to how a film unfolds. Generally, with most films, in the first 5 or 10 minutes you get a good impression of who the characters are, what their relationships are going to be, what the tone of the film is and what the arc is going to be. “What we are really trying to do is take those expectations, turn them on the

audience and hopefully give you the sense that every time you feel like you have a grasp on where the film is going it will become something else in order to try and create some kind of unique viewing experience. I knew that it might be a risky choice but I really appreciate filmmakers who take bold and risky choices in their films so that is something that I am trying to apply to my own work.” - Zack Parker

This year’s theme is The Art of Birding. The joy experienced while birding can sometimes be hard to express. The photographer or artist that can express visually and poetically what is felt is often envied. As part of honoring the artists, the popular A River Runs Thru Us exhibition is being shown under the big tent throughout the festival. The Verde River Artists’ Challenge, a threeday, two-night kayaking excursion on the Verde River resulted in works of art created by the participating local artists and has been traveling throughout Arizona for the past year. The final showing will be at the festival. The festival’s keynote speaker, Greg Miller, highlights the cinematic art of birding. Greg’s presentation is a selection of stories about how he got started birding with his dad, how he came to do a “big year”, how his story became a book by Mark Obmascik, The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession, and eventually the movie, The Big Year, starring Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Steve Martin, and what it was like to be a bird consultant for the film. To complete his big year, Greg zig-zagged across the continent trying to see as many species of birds in one calendar year

waiting for? Get outside and take a trek this spring season! To check out pictures of Sentinel Peak and take virtual tours of other places around AZ, like my Facebook page “Take a Stroll with Niccole”. For questions or comments pleased email me at takeastrollwithniccole@gmail. com.

April is national bike month, and I have been really focused over the past few weeks on the life on two wheels, so I haven’t written much about hiking. Here is a great place in Tucson that you can bike to and then do a short hike with breathtaking views of Tucson and surrounding area. Sentinel peak (also known as “A” mountain) is an amazing place to watch the sunrise or sunset over the beautiful little city of Tucson. It is a great place for landscape and city photography, and it has a rich history beneath its volcanic rocks. The “A” comes from the University of Arizona, where student organizations paint it different colors for different occasions, which is not an easy task with the basalt formation measuring 70 feet by 160 feet. There are many little trails all around this mountain for hiking and trail running and this mountain provides a short but lung-busting bike ride up to the top as well. I like to hike out here when I don’t have time to do a big hike, or with little kids, they love the big “A” on the mountain. Sentinel

•What was it like, the first time you saw yourself in the 18th-century garb of Anna Strong, the tavern keeper, wife and member of the Revolutionary War Culper Ring of spies?

It was like looking at a painting. When I first saw myself, it was surreal. The costumes have evoked a lot in me. •Has it made you think more about that period in history?

It’s definitely made me want to go back and revisit the information that I wish I’d absorbed in school about these situations. I think it’s made me realize how important they are and also about being a little more grown-up in understanding how complicated life and how complicated circumstances can be. It’s interesting to look back and see, in the worst scenarios, how people behaved and what decisions they made. I think some of the most important stuff about this show is that little decision that somebody decides to make. When you see so much is at stake, and you’re not sure, what makes you say, “I’ve no choice. I have to change.” That’s something that everybody has to think about. It’s a terrifying thing.Because then they think that whatever’s to come can’t be worse than where you are now. “If I have nothing else to lose” ... I think these people were there.
