They’ve already amassed more than a dozen demos of songs for their debut album, which they plan to release later this year. “We record live to tape,” says Adam. “What you hear is what you get. It’s honest and that’s what we’re about. We’re just doing our own thing. We’re used to not fitting in anyway.” Adds Dalton: “I make music because, growing up, I could rely on music almost like a friend. If we can make music for other people to hang onto like a friend, then our job is done.” For more information please visit www. pubrocklive.com

BOBBY MCFERRIN LIVE AT SCOTTSDALE CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS’ VIRGINIA G. PIPER THEATER Saturday, April 26th at 8pm For decades, Bobby McFerrin has broken all the rules. The 10-time Grammy Award winner and musicindustry rebel has blurred the distinction between pop music and fine art. McFerrin singlehandedly redefined the role of the human voice with his a cappella hit Don’t Worry, Be Happy, along with his many groundbreaking collaborations and solo vocal performances. Now McFerrin celebrates the transcendence of the human spirit with music from his latest album, spirityouall, a heartfelt re-imagining of an American tradition. Beloved songs like He’s Got the Whole World in his Hands, Every Time I Feel the Spirit and original tunes explore McFerrin’s everyday search for grace, wisdom and freedom. The songs embrace his folk, rock and blues influences without abandoning his fearless improvisational approach or his never-ending exploration of the human voice. McFerrin moves seamlessly between lyrics and wordless lines, inviting the audience to sing along, raising the roof with joyful grooves. Joyce Fisher of

‘Growing Up Fisher’

Sometimes, it is difficult to dress your age. Toddlers clunking around in their mom’s heels can be adorable until they become 7-year-olds in slinky tops. Dressing up – or older than your age – looks sexually precocious, even if the child isn’t. And dressing down – younger than your age – can look ridiculous. Finding that balance is hard as Joyce Fisher (Jenna Elfman), the mom on the NBC Tuesday comedy “Growing Up Fisher” proves. She’s 42 and going through a midlife crisis. Joyce got pregnant on her second date with Mel (J.K. Simmons) and married young. Though she loves her blind husband, she needs to be on her own, so

she is getting a divorce. “She’s got 20 years to live,” Elfman says. “She has a lot of experiences to make up.” And as she tries to find herself, she changes her look.

When you whiten, the stains may become more noticeable at first, but if you follow the instructions and use the whiteners for 10 days to 2 weeks, (In some cases, even a little longer) the color of the teeth will even out. “There are several reasons why people’s teeth get darker. The most common reason is age. This happens as a result of the teeth becoming less translucent. The tooth lets less light through, as the dentin inside the tooth gets thicker. Diet can also play a part if you eat or drink things that stain your teeth. Things like coffee, tea, wine, and some fruits (grapes, blue berries, etc.) have been know to cause stains.

‘It Felt Like Love’

‘Only Lovers Left Alive’

‘The Retrieval’

Tom Hiddleston plays a depressed musician who reunites with his lover (Tilda Swinton). However, their romance - which has already endured several centuries - is disrupted by the arrival of her uncontrollable younger sister (Mia Wasikowska). (R - 123 minutes)

Ashton Sanders plays a boy who, on the outskirts of the U.S. Civil War, is sent north by his bounty hunter gang to retrieve a wanted man (Tishuan Scott). (R - 92 minutes)

Randy: Tilda Swinton has an onscreen presence like no other. Her persona is hard to describe; somewhat cold, yet alluring. Her face is often expressionless, yet full of emotion. She is perfectly cast and carries Jim Jarmusch’s vampire romance. Both his direction, her performance, the mood, music and tone make ‘Lovers’ a unique entry in the vampire genre. Joseph: Independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch may have wanted “Only Lovers Left Alive” to be his artistic answer to the “Twilight” phenomenon but it is really just a cinematic sleeping pill. The romantic drama’s sloth-like story contains little more than its stars sipping blood as the plot progresses to a very unimpressive conclusion.

Stan:Many may get the impression that Writer/Director Chris Eska’s film is a story conceived and presented post ’12 Years a Slave’ while in actuality, during 2013 film festival circuit, its poignant theme with breathtaking cinematography capturing key points in U.S. history, is painful with triumphant masterfulness, exudes with sorrow and angst; and above all: hope for the future. Joseph: “The Retrieval” is such a laboring experience that it feels a lot longer than it really is. On one hand, the film is visually stunning - authentically evoking every emotion writer/director Chris Eska asks of his audience - and its ideas are admirable. But the timing of this tale is truly trying thereby thwarting the efficacy of said strengths. Herb: A well done, intriguing story of family commitment and promises kept. This civil war set piece is full of nuanced performances that have a strikingly simple, but believable presentation, which is inspiring and sad.

Gina Piersanti plays a young woman who wants to emulate the sexual exploits of her more experienced best friend. She fixates on a tough older guy and tries to insert herself into his world - putting her in a dangerously vulnerable situation. (NR - 82 minutes) Stan: Evoking feelings of forlorn love as in the theme of the classic ‘Looking for Mr. Goodbar’ (1977), writer/director Eliza Hittman’s film, with its haunting soundtrack and almost voyeuristic style of presentation, has the feel and emotional tugging at the heart as the underlying thought that it can only end badly for the central character, solidifies the thought of ‘looking for love in all the wrong places’ is a precarious path to take. Randy: With a real “film festival” feel, this coming of age story surpasses Hollywood storytelling. The real and honest performances by the talented young cast Is a reflection of the expert direction and writing from the first time feature film director Eliza Hittman. While ‘Love’ has a lot of competition at the box office, it is worth a look. Herb: I was entranced by the cinematography of the film, which gives you an idea of what it must feel like to be a 14 year-old girl in love for the first time. At times unsettling, the film heralds the arrival of a new director of note, Eliza Hittman, who wowed audiences in Europe and on the festival circuit with this little gem.

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director Chris Eska (‘The Retrieval’) By Stan Robinson

‘Walking with the Enemy’ Jonas Armstrong plays a young man who, in Hungary during the final months of World War ll, sets out to find his displaced family by stealing a Nazi uniform to pose as an officer. He undertakes extraordinary measures to reroute his family and other Jews to safety by disrupting the activities of the German occupiers. (NR - 100 minutes) Joseph: “Walking with the Enemy” features some impressive production values and some pretty outstanding performances from its actors but the entire project feels as though it was cut from a run-ofthe-mill mold in that it progresses with a robotic rigidity. Emotion is all but missing in this otherwise wellmeaning movie.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’ (2001)~ After Stuart Townsend was deemed too young for the role, Viggo Mortensen was convinced by his son, Henry, to take over the role of Aragorn.

‘The Dark Knight’ (2008)~ The tall building overlooking Gotham City that Batman perches himself on while deep in thought is actually the Sears Tower in Chicago, where most of the film was shot on-location.

“For ‘The Retrieval’ there’s a couple of different ways I approached it. One was about the original feel of the idea and this is sort of a very straight forward way of becoming interested in the subject matter about four or five years ago as we approach the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. I was reading all the stories of the tragedy and hard work that led up to that point on January 1st 1863 when slavery was finally abolished, but my mind instantly went to January 2nd and I asked myself ‘What did that look like, what did that feel like, and what was it like six months or even a year, or four, five, six years down the road in that sort of grey period between enslavement and true freedom? “I hadn’t really seen that period portrayed on film, at least not very often and I wanted to explore that. But also, I come at my projects from a different perspective as well which

is that I have themes and emotions that run through all my work that are important to me and I try to find the setting, the time, the characters, and the place to most highlight and bring out those themes and emotions and help them resonate with an audience.

BET, YOU

“All of my films deal with surrogate families, and the need to reach out and make connections in an increasingly isolating world and also the need for us all to re-evaluate our path in life and see if what we are doing is really best for ourselves and the people we care about, or, are we just sort of following the norm and doing what someone a bit older than us told us to do.” – Chris Eska

Director Mark Schmidt (‘Walking with the Enemy’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I came across this individual who risked his life to do what he could to save innocent people. It was not just totally on him - it was other people, too - but I started investigating through some old books about the history of what happened back then and his name popped up here and there. I went back to the little town where he was and talked to people and it seemed like the older people knew the history but the younger people really didn’t. “We met with the Horthy family relatives of the leader Regent Horthy

(Ben Kingsley) - and they helped give a little insight into it. We also met with the family of Pinchas Rosenbaum (who was the inspiration for this story). And we met with the daughter of Carl Lutz (William Hope) - the Swiss diplomat that helped save some innocent lives - along with many survivors. We talked to somewhere between 35 and 50 people. “It was quite interesting to hear the stories of these people. We are so lucky that our relatives didn’t go through the horror and the terror they had gone through over there in Hungary during World War II. We tried to film it as tastefully as possible without making it too horrific where it was just unbearable to watch. We were trying to keep it as real as possible yet do it as tastefully as possible. We were always watching that fine line.” - Mark Schmidt

FILM! COVER STORY

AZ WEEKLY CELEBRATES THE LIFE & WORK OF ACTOR PAUL WALKER to devastate the entire city. Camille Delamarre directs the action/crime drama with the screenplay by Luc Besson & Bibi Naceri.

By Stan Robinson ‘Brick Mansions’ opening April 25th 2014, starring Paul Walker, is his last fully completed role before his untimely passing away in the fall of 2013. In the film, Paul Walker stars as an undercover Detroit cop who navigates a dangerous neighborhood that is surrounded by a containment wall with the help of an ex-con in order to bring down a crime lord and his plot

The story of ‘Brick Mansions’ is an English language adaptation of writer/ producer/director Luc Besson’s French language 2004 film ‘Banlieue 13’ (District B130). One of my favorite comtemporary producer/writer/ directors is Luc Besson. I first became a fan of Luc Besson in 1990 through his French language film ‘La Femme Nikita’. Becoming a TV series (19972000) on USA Cable network with Australian actress Peta Wilson in the title role endeared me to his work. Luc Besson’s body of work includes my favorites of ‘The Fifth Element’ (1997), ‘The Transporter’ films, the ‘Taken’ films, and the recent ‘3 Days to Kill’ starring Kevin Costner. When Paul Walker passed away last fall, he was just about to finish work on ‘Fast & Furious 7’. According to a

Facebook post on the film’s website, his brothers Caleb and Cody will stand in for Paul Walker in finishing the remaining action sequences for the film “and small gaps in production”. My favorite films starring Paul Walker include his character Brian O’Conner in the ‘Fast & Furious’ films, ‘Into the Blue’ (2005), ‘Eight Below’ (2006), ‘Running Scared’ (2006), ‘Takers’ (2010), and ‘Hours’ (2013).

16

I was reminded recently of the power of film as the visual keeper of history since its creation around 1895 when one of my children contacted me with “Dad, just saw your name in the credits for the movie “Passenger 57” (1992). So too will I think of the work of actor Paul Walker as I watch his latest ‘Brick Mansions’ and see my favorites of his films… April 23rd, 2014 - April 29th, 2014

RACE! Nissan 370-Z Sport Test & Photo by Chad Haire With a base price starting at only $29K, the Nissan 370-Z is an outstanding value. This one had the optional Sport Pack at $3K more. It includes fancy leather trim, bigger 19-inch wheels, larger tires, monster-sized brake rotors, and other goodies. With other items, the tag hit $41K-- still a good deal. Under the hood is a 3.7 liter engine rated at 332 HP. I had the excellent smooth 6-speed manual box, but the

7-speed automatic is just as quick, both reaching 0-60 in about 6 seconds. Fuel economy is 18/26. This is a true sports car, with power, great cornering ability, and perfect brakes. However, the ride is stiff, and there is a lot of road noise on rough pavement. Not a good choice for long trips. With the limited cargo room inside, you won’t be taking many long journeys anyway. The 370-Z is a good alternative to the expensive German sports cars.

SUMMER BEERS JuJu is a nice lighter beer with a hint of ginger that provides some unique flavors. It is a great complement to sushi and salads. Ska Brewing is back with their Mexican Logger, a clean, crisp beer that evokes thoughts of sitting on the beach in Mexico with one of their local favorites in hand. Definitely a beer to tuck into your cooler for something a little different on Cinco de Mayo…and the fact that it comes in cans means you can take it anywhere. Breckenridge Summer Bright will also be available in cans, as well as the typical bottle package. This is a real easy drinking filtered wheat beer with a hint of both lemon and lime. Abita is another brewery that rolls from one beer to the next during the hot weather in Phoenix. Get started now with Spring IPA, and then wait for Seersucker Pils to hit in another month or so. And don’t forget Abita’s Harvest series. Strawberry Harvest is on the shelves and taps now, soon to be followed by Lemon Wheat. Big Sky also has their Summer Continued On Page 36...

Almost everybody makes at least one seasonal now, and summer sees the vast majority of them. What makes the typical summer seasonal? Usually they are light and easy to drink, possessing a refreshing, thirst quenching property. They are perfect for sitting down after some strenuous outdoor work, like walking from the car to the house.

One of the long time favorites is Anderson Valley Summer Solstice. This beer, which Anderson Valley terms a Cerveza Crema in deference to the Hispanic farm workers in the Boonville area who were among the first to embrace this beer, is richer than many summer beers with a finishing hint of vanilla that makes you want more. As a contrast to a longtime favorite from Anderson Valley, Great Divide has only recently geared up their seasonal program, but what a great job they did. Look for Lasso IPA on the shelves right now, soon to be followed by Heyday Wheat. Both beers will make your day just a little cooler. How about an old beer that is new again? Left Hand used to release JuJu Ginger year round, but decided to pull back, reformulate and make it a seasonal release. The recently renamed Good

PRIEST

As the first of the 100 degree days stands poised to hit us, it became clear that it was time to start discussing some great hot weather beer. So let’s do that. We can look at this in two different ways. First we can look at beers brewed for the summer months… seasonally produced and rotating out sometime in August. We also will look at some great year round beers…ones which we can always drink, but really shine when the mercury climbs.

...Continued from page 32 Honey in the market this year, and it is always a favorite…the touch of honey makes it a wonderful hot weather beer. A couple of others to look for include The Bruery TradewindsTripel (see if you can figure out the “extra” ingredients), SanTan Mr. Pineapple Wheat (this GABF medal winning beer was released in cans last year and has exploded), Bridgeport Summer Squeeze, Alaskan Summer and New Belgium Summer Helles. Other favorites are Leinenkugel Summer Shandy and Blue Moon Summer Honey Wheat, a wheat ale with honey for sweetness and a little orange peel to balance it out with some citrus flavor. Now, let’s look at year round beers that are particularly good in the hot weather. First off is Bell’s Oberon, kind of a hybrid since it is a year round beer in Arizona, but a summer seasonal in most of the rest of the distribution area. Regardless, it combines wheat

beer goodness with the spiciness of Saaz hops for a refreshing drinking experience. Lost Coast Brewing has both Tangerine Wheat and Great White to give you year round enjoyment. Both beers are wheat based, but Great White uses a little kaffir lime and coriander, while Tangerine Wheat, uses…I’ll let you figure it out. Ciders are always wonderful so whether you are enjoying Crispin or newly introduced Wild Cider you can’t go wrong there. Pilsner beers always go great with hot weather and Scrimshaw from North Coast may be one of the best American brewed pilsners out there. Grand Canyon also makes a very nice pilsner and Mama’s Little YellaPils from Oskar

Blues always gets the job done. Staying with the year round theme, how about a Ballast Point Pale Ale? A German Kolsch style, not a true pale ale, this beer brings plenty of enjoyment to your table. Sonoran’s White Chocolate Ale will cool you down while giving you your chocolate dose for the day. Stiegl, an outstanding Austrian brewery, has an amazing

Grapefruit Radler. If German beers are more your thing, both the Pilsner and Weizen from Krombacher should work for you. The Krombacher Pilsner is the best-selling Pilsner in Germany, so you know it has something going for it. Of course you also have SanTan Hefeweizen, College Street Wheat and Papago Orange Blossom to keep you cool.

“Modern Times Forever” is the longest film ever made and runs for 240 hours (10 days). 36

“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” premieres Sunday on HBO.

Oliver reflects on

‘Last Week’ John Oliver’s HBO series, “Last Week Tonight,” premieres Sunday, April 27. And a month before the show would bow, Oliver hadn’t a specific clue as to what he would be doing opening night. “It is an odd situation,” Oliver says, taking in a majestic view of the Empire State Building. “The jokes we will tell on the first show have not happened yet, but we are building a machine to be flexible enough to trivialize vastly important stories.” Though he has goals and a strong concept, Oliver could not say for sure what his show will be because it is predicated on the news. “We did our first technical show last night,” he says. “I did GM, the recall of 5 million cars, the ignition problem they knew about. It was between 12 and 303 deaths. They say 12; 12 is their defense.”

42

In a month, this could be bigger news, or it

could have faded. Oliver did not know – no one does – but he’s relishing taking the news as it comes. “The idea is we can do anything,” Oliver said. “We are not going to get told to not do anything. You have to survive by your own moral compass – and mine was probably broken in 1995 – and an innate sense of decency, and mine was probably lost when I was 6.” Oliver did a terrific job when he filled in as host of “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” last summer, and he credits that stint for leading to the new show. The Sunday show will be “as loose as possible,” he says. Oliver isn’t planning to do a monologue but wants “pre-taped segments because we have extra time,” he says. “We can make it a virtue rather than a curse. It should be possible to be reactive to stories.” For instance, given Russian President Vladimir Putin’s occupation of Crimea, it’s not inconceiv-

able that he might fancy annexing another country. Oliver ponders the possibilities. “Putin could wake up and say, ‘Warsaw looks good this time of year,’ ” Oliver says and starts laughing at the prospect – the comedic prospects, not potential wars. “As we have been gaming out hypothetical shows, we are working out which stories go away because the meat is picked off their bones or if there is something to tackle, whether there is still a deeper story,” he says. As far as guests, Oliver does not want reality show contestants, starlets or the usual red carpet brigade. He does, though, want policymakers. Had the show been on the week he was chatting, Oliver would have tried to have on a Ukrainian ambassador or someone in the NSA. “I like to take serious things and treat them with none of the gravity they deserve,” he says.

The Suspect

In a career that’s been filled with acclaim, Judi Dench justifiably earned another big dose — and another Oscar nomination — as the title character in director Stephen Frears’ fact-based 2013 comedydrama, the tale of a woman’s search for the offspring she gave up a half-century earlier. Steve Coogan (who also co-wrote the script) does fine acting as Martin Sixsmith, the ex-reporter who joins her on her trek in the hope of getting a story out of it.

Philomena A woman searches for the offspring she gave up a half-century earlier.

Ride Along Comedian Kevin Hart’s movie success was confirmed by the surprisingly strong box-office showing of this 2014 action comedy, with Hart as a security guard determined to prove himself to his prospective fiancee’s (Tika Sumpter) Atlanta policeman brother (Ice Cube). The men go on patrol together, only to run into a case bigger than either of them could have imagined.

Small Time Back on series television now in “Surviving Jack,” Christopher Meloni (“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”) also plays a dad in this fact-inspired 2014 comedydrama. In this case, the father is a usedcar salesman who’s happy to bring his son into the business, until he sees how getting good at the job changes the teen. Dean Norris, Bridget Moynahan (“Blue Bloods”) and Kevin Nealon also star in the tale, written and directed by “24” cocreator Joel Surnow.

Yanks import talented Tanaka to baseball’s biggest stage

Masahiro Tanaka

As the New York Yankees put on a full-court press in the offseason to sign baseball’s top free-agent pitcher — one with a legendary record of success performing on the other side of the world — it’s no surprise that a legend right at home played a part, if only peripherally, in the successful pursuit. Japanese phenom Masahiro Tanaka is a Yankee today because of, first and foremost, the seven-year, $155 million deal he signed in January, plus the $20 million release fee the Yanks paid his Nippon Professional Baseball team. But it certainly didn’t hurt New York’s chances that the agent who negotiated Tanaka’s deal is Casey Close, whose most famous client is none other than Derek Jeter. Who better than the iconic five-time world champion to welcome the 25-year-old Full name: Masahiro Tanaka Birthplace: Itami, Japan Birth date: Nov. 1, 1988 Height/weight: 6 feet 2 inches/ 205 pounds Road to stardom: Pitched highschool baseball in Japan from 2004 to 2006 ... as an 11th-grader led his team to national high school baseball title ... first-round pick of the Pacific League’s Rakuten Golden Eagles in 2006, and in 2007 made pro debut with Rakuten at age 18

right-hander to the U.S. and Major League Baseball? Based on Tanaka’s career thus far, he should feel right at home. In seven Pacific League seasons he was 99-35 with a 2.30 ERA and 1,238 strikeouts. He won 26 consecutive games bridging the 2012 and ’13 campaigns, and his 2013 season overall was historic: 24-0, 1.27 ERA, and 183 strikeouts in 212 innings. He is the Yankees’ fourth starter now, behind CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda and Ivan Nova, but that slot is more a function of easing in the newcomer than it is based on talent. The Yanks believe — and scouts throughout MLB concur — that Tanaka will soon be a top-of-the-rotation pitcher. On Sunday, April 27, New York hosts the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on ESPN. Career highlights: Led Golden Eagles to their first Japan Series title in 2013 ... threw 160 pitches in a playoff start last season and pitched again the next day in relief ... was 43-9 over final three seasons in Japan ... beat Toronto in major league debut, allowing six hits, two earned runs and no walks in seven innings while striking out eight; threw 65 of his 97 pitches for strikes Personal: Married Japanese pop star Mai Satoda in December 2012

Ruben Salazar

PBS looks at the life and legend of ‘Ruben Salazar: Man in the Middle’ When researching a public figure, it’s always a challenge to sort out what’s history and what’s hagiography. It’s especially tough when someone becomes a martyr for a cause, especially a controversial political cause. The quickest way to lose someone’s humanity is bury him inside a legend. On Tuesday, April 29 (check local listings), PBS premieres “Ruben Salazar: Man in the Middle — A Voces Special Presentation,” produced and directed by Phillip Rodriguez. It’s a portrait of the pioneering Los Angeles Times journalist who transformed from a mainstream reporter living in Santa Ana, Calif., to a chronicler and then passionate supporter of the radical Chicano movement of the late 1960s. When a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy killed him under mysterious circumstances on Aug. 29, 1970, Salazar — a U.S. Army veteran born to Mexican parents who moved to El Paso, Texas, when he was a year old — became a martyr and hero to many Latinos, even those who criticized his work during his lifetime. Friend and colleague Bill Drummond is quoted as saying about the shooting: “I keep telling myself that it was an accident. The victim could’ve been any other guy who came

off the street for a beer, yet I know that anybody who tries to stand too long between hostile camps is going to get hurt.” The film uses Salazar’s personal writings and interviews with his friends, colleagues and family to try to find the man inside the myth. Says Rodriguez: “The Salazar story had long been considered to be an ethnic story, a regional story. But it is much bigger than that. This is a story about a regular guy who, motivated by principle, challenges an abusive authority at great risk to himself — it’s a classic American story.” If you’re interested in reading Salazar’s writings, his family donated an archive of his personal and professional documents to the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. It’s kept in the USC Libraries, Special Collections. To view selections of the archive online (and learn more about his life), click on rubensalazarproject.com.

crew behind closed doors at Nissan, General Motors and the Silicon Valley startup Tesla Motors to chronicle the story of the global resurgence of electric cars.

Chisum 11 a.m. on AMC John Wayne is in top form in this 1970 Western, casting him as a cattle tycoon steadfastly determined not to let his land be overrun. Naturally, that makes him unpopular with sinister neighbors. Veteran character actors Ben Johnson and Forrest Tucker co-star, and the cast also includes Lynda Day and Christopher George, who later became real-life spouses.

TUESDAY Jake and the Never Land Pirates 8 a.m. on DISN This episode adds a little of the King Arthur legend to the “Peter Pan”-inspired pirate adventures as Jake and his crew come upon a mysterious stone door that only Jake’s sword can open in “The Sword and the Stone.” Then Captain Hook joins Jake, Izzy and Cubby for a game of pirate baseball in “Jake’s Home Run.”

SUNDAY It Happened at the World’s Fair 9 a.m. on TCM What happens at the World’s Fair? Elvis falls in love. Well, his character does, anyway. Mike (Elvis Presley) is a cropduster pilot who loses his plane because of a gambling problem. So he and his partner (Gary Lockwood) travel to the World’s Fair in Seattle to make a little cash. There, Mike ends up taking care of an abandoned child (Vicky Tiu) and flirting with a nurse (Joan O’Brien).

Eragon 5 p.m. on FAM A young man’s (Ed Speleers) discovery of a dragon’s egg is just the start of an adventure that ultimately will pit him against a sinister king (John Malkovich) in this striking version of the popular Christopher Paolini fantasy novel, directed by visual-effects master Stefen Fangmeier (“Twister”). Jeremy Irons plays the hero’s guru in a cast that also includes Sienna Guillory, Robert Carlyle, Djimon Hounsou and singer Joss Stone.

Mirror Mirror 8 p.m. on FAM By far the lighter of the two 2012 takes on a certain fairy tale, this version from highly visual director Tarsem Singh (“Immortals”) casts Lily Collins as Snow White. However, the star of the show is Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, who conspires with her servant (Nathan Lane) to get “the fairest of them all” out of her way. Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) makes an acceptable Prince Charming in a cast that also includes Sean Bean and Mare Winningham.

AVOIDING THE BENCH High risk sports: Basketball, football, soccer and gymnastics. Prevention tips: Wearing the correct shoes and supportive insoles will greatly reduce the chance for a foot sprain or stain in a high impact sport. Taking proper precautions like stretching during warm up can also help curb chances of this injury.

Common Sports-Related Injuries and a Doctor’s Take on Prevention By Dr. Penny Krich Sports bring out an unnatural passion in so many individuals. From the thrill of a touchdown to the camaraderie of the team, athletes are at their most driven when they are on the field. During this heat of the moment, however, is when the possibility of injury is greatest.

Fractures: Typically produced by the same impacts and falls as sprains and strains, a fracture is the break in the bone that can be instigated from a one-time injury – an acute fracture – or repeated stress to the bone over time, also known as a stress fracture. Acute fractures are the most common in impact sports, while stress fractures are more likely to happen in longdistance running. Signs of a fracture: Sudden and severe pain, swelling, movement and inability to place weight on limb. High risk sports: Football, basketball and cross country running.

The risk of a sports-related injury is prevalent beginning the moment a child joins a youth team and carries all the way through to the professional level. The trick is to not fear injury, but rather become educated on the causes of common injuries and the necessary steps to assure safety. Remember: injuries, for the most part, are preventable. Across ages and skill levels, here are the most common injuries and how to prevent them:

Prevention tips: Because acute fractures are usually due to an impact or fall, injury prevention begins with using equipment correctly and learning a sport’s proper form. Stress fractures are a little easier to prevent since they occur from physical stress over time. Listening to your body, not overextending yourself and choosing the right equipment (like proper shoes) will all help in the prevention of stress fractures.

Sprains and Strains: Possibly the most common of sports injuries, a sprain or strain occurs when trauma happens to a muscle or ligament. Ranging from a minimal pull to a complete tear, sprains and strains should be treated professionally so the healing process can begin as soon as possible. These occur most commonly in the foot, ankle and wrist. Any sport that involves running and quick stop-and-go movements make sprains and strains a little more common. Signs of a sprain: Heavy swelling, tenderness, pain, bruising and instability.

Muscle Pulls: Not quite as severe as a sprain or fracture, muscle pulls should still be taken seriously. After an injury, apply ice and rest until the pain and swelling subside. The ice relaxes the muscle and helps relieve any spasm, and it should be applied for about 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off, over a few days. The dull ache of a muscle pull usually disappears within a few days.

Prevention tips: Warming up and properly stretching before physical activity is crucial in muscle pull prevention. Regular strength training will help keep muscles fit and more resistant to injury. Knee injury: Up to 25 percent of all sports-related injuries are knee injuries, as even everyday activities are already putting stress on the knees. When sports are added into the mix, knees are bent, twisted and banged, making them very susceptible to injuries. Some of the most common are an ACL tear and Patellofemoral Syndrome, which is an injury resulting from the repetitive movement of the kneecap against the thigh bone. Signs of a knee injury: Swelling, popping, stiffness, weakness, locking or inability to straighten. High risk sports: Skiing, football, basketball and track and field. Prevention tips: Wear shoes with arch supports, learn the sport’s proper techniques by listening to a coach and use the equipment correctly. Wearing knee guards is a good decision if the activity has a high likelihood of falls. Growth Plate Injuries: Growth plate injuries are the most concerning among children, as their bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments are still growing. Growth plates, areas where cartilage is still developing, are

Signs of a muscle pull: Aches and inflammation. High risk sports: Wrestling, football, baseball, soccer and golf.

weaker than ligaments and tendons. As a result, injuries to these areas can be much more serious in children, possibly causing a growth stunt later in life. Signs of a growth plate injury: Inability to put weight on a certain area and swelling. A doctor will be able to determine if the growth plate has been impacted. High risk sports: Gymnastics, running and baseball. Prevention tips: Ensure proper daily requirements of calcium and always wear the recommended equipment, such as a helmet or shin guards. It’s also best to take a coach’s recommendations in reference to children’s safety equipment and injury prevention. Injuries can be frightening and it is vital to seek professional help when a major injury happens or if any type of pain is reoccurring. Listening to a doctor’s advice is often the key in recovering quickly and being able to return to the sport, ready to play again. Checking in with Donnie Wahlberg Donnie Wahlberg’s television image as a family man has worked very well for him. Besides executive producing (with brother Mark) and appearing in A&E Network’s “Wahlburgers,” which has been renewed, the actor is wrapping up his fourth season and heading for a fifth on CBS’ Friday drama “Blue Bloods.” His character, NYPD detective Danny Reagan, is at the crux of the episodes much more often than not ... which has given Wahlberg, who recently made his directing debut on the show, a comfortable home-screen home. “Tom Selleck and I had a talk after the show first got picked up,” Wahlberg says, “and we both were kind of happy about Friday nights at 10:00 (ET). We thought that might give us a chance to find our viewers, because if we came into one of the prime slots on all those nights where there’s a lot of pressure, we might not have gotten the patience of the network.”
